It does require some courage to champion the vulnerable and the sick and the infirm. And a fresh face but a familiar path. France picks a president and sends a message. Translator i will struggle with all my strength against the divisions which subvert us and it is only that way that we can give back to the people of france. With us to share their reporting and their insights, jack Jackie Jackie in a court of law you might call this trying to intimidate the witness. Ask sally yates under oath if she knows how classified information got into the newspapers soon after she explain today to the white house counsel. To the record is the president of the United States tweeting that and for the record he misspelled counsel in his first tweet. And then later fixed it. But today its about a lot more than bad spelling. Sally yates warned the white house earlier this year that its National Security adviser was not telling the truth and might be so compromised he could be blackmailed by the kremlin. She will publicly testify this afternoon. This mornings tweets will tell you everything you need to know. This hearing has the president s interest. Jim acosta live for us with word that today would be a very different day, jim, had President Trump taken a little advice from his predecessor. Thats right, john. We are reporting that during this meeting they had in the oval office on november 10th that president obama told then president elect trump that he should not hire Michael Flynn, the retired general for National Security adviser. Was told by one former obama official that the president s message to the president elect at that time was simply that there are better people to hire for that position. However, were also hearing, our colleague jake tap sper is reporting that part of the basis for the president s warning to the president elect at that time was this russia investigation that of course Michael Flynn was being looked at as a part of. And so i think this is a huge topic that were going to be hearing about during the briefing. Its been pushed up. Its going to start at 1 00 according to the white house. Well be hearing from sean spicer in just a few minute. We should report that at this point we have not heard from any white house officials, Current White House officials, about this news that president obama warned then president elect trump that he should steer clear of Michael Flynn. And yet jim, as we wait for sally yates to testify, we digest this new breaking news about president obamas warning, it seems the Trump White House is prepared to take tack against her if she goes up and gives the testimony were expecting. Thats right. Theyre going to say that essentially sally yates is a partisan, that she is a holdover from the Obama Administration. So of course she would be causing for this new administration coming in. A lot of people have come to sally yates defense in the last several weeks since she was forced out by President Trump. They will say and they have said and i suppose you will hear this from democratic members of the committee when shes testifying that she is a career attorney, a career Public Servant and not somebody that will go around making partisan attacks. Michael flynn just continues to be this ongoing drip, drip, drip problem fist this white house. President trump just as of this morning was tweeting that Michael Flynn was vetted by the Obama White House essentially saying its the Obama Administrations fault. That is something that we heard from sean spicer during a briefing here a couple of weeks ago. But the problem all of that is now you have this revelation that president obama on november 10th, two days after donald trump was elected president of the United States, was warning president elect trump that he should stay away from Michael Flynn and i suppose this is just one of those stories. What were hearing beginning of this now, if we were to get behind the scenes of the meeting the president elect had at that time, the details from that conversation would be fascinating. Youre right. Every time we learn something in this story is takes us a new wrinkle. Lets bring it inside the room. Were going to get to the testimony in a minute, but the idea that president obama leaned over during his private meeting with the president elect and said look, dont hire this guy. We dont know how specific he was. We know that he just said hes a bad guy. Thats a pretty Remarkable Development and obviously advice the president did not take. President trumps defense here, i think president obama gave him a lot of advice in that meeting. It may have been hard to keep track of every piece of it. But i think this just goes to show that President Trump views himself as his own best communications director, his own best chief of staff, his own best Research Opposition research pro as he showed this morning. And when he gets on twitter, hes also his own worst enemy. There was discussion this morning about whether or not this yates testimony would really advance the ball. Trump gets on twitter. Shifts the blame to obama. And then we see, you know, surprisingly leaks from obama world saying hey, we warned him about this. And my understanding is in that warning, in the oval office, that first meeting with then president elect trump went to meet with barack obama that what president obamas message was was the National Security adviser is a really Important Role in your white house. Like the most Important Role. You need to remember that. But we also know from covering donald trump during the campaign that for better or worse, he is pretty loyal to the people who are loyal to him. And Michael Flynn was on that plane every almost every single day. He was with him through thick and through thin and he was at the end of the campaign out there to his peril screaming lock her up. So he was donald trump felt a loyalty to mike el flynn. Whether or not thats because he was very close to him or there was Something Else that maybe Michael Flynn knew things that he wanted to keep him in the fold. We dont know the answer to that. What the white house was telling nbc news right before we came on was that of course obama doesnt like Michael Flynn. He was openly critical of him during the election. Obama fired him. Theres a lot of bad blood there. Perhaps then the president elect took what obama said as kind of sour grapes, that would not be beyond the realm of possibility. Its interesting this news coming out just moments before this hugely anticipated testimony this afternoon. Almost designed it seems to show that these warnings were coming from all angles from the previous administration. They were coming in fast and furious and the Trump Administration ignored them. At least thats how it seems that the obama world wants to make this wants this to appear. How this will affect todays testimony will also be interesting. Did sally yates know about what president obama said to President Trump and will she be able to say any of that too will also be interesting. This is important to the president of the United States. To michael very important point, he views himself as his best communications adviser. But he is the president of the United States. Hes the president of the United States and the former acting attorney general is about to testify under oath before the United States congress and you tweet ask sally yates under oath if she knows how classified information got into the newspapers soon after she explain today to the white house counsel. I started before i covered politics, i used to cover the courts. A lawyer would call that witness intimidation. Completely. From the president of the United States. I think we have all been kind of desense tiezed in some way. This is beyond out of the norm. This is inappropriate. For the president of the United States to be this aggressive with somebody who used to work for him, who is coming before the United States congress with sworn testimony hours later is beyond the pale. It just is. Weve seen this in other hearings. The white house can send words to its republican friends, make sure you push her on this or that. But to go public like this is striking. I want to bring in the voice of the former National Security adviser. The issue here is that we know that flynn spoke to the Russian Ambassador and he denied discussing anything improper. It was about scheduling about meetings. Thats how flynn initially described it. The Russian Ambassador was being wire tapped as he routinely it. U. S. Intelligence picks up they had a conversation about sanctions that had just been put in place about the Obama Administration and we dont know the full details but something about the possibility of lifting those. Thats where she says flynn would have crossed the line. It is not unusual to meet with foreign digny terrys, ambassadors when youre in transition. Thats not unusual at all. I did myself as the National Security adviser elect for president george w. Bush. You cant discuss policy and you cant suggest you that might change policy. Thats going to be part of the conversation when we get this dramatic public testimony from sally yates in a couple of hours. What are we expecting out of that hearing and tie it in to where these investigations are going. I think that it will be interesting to see how far sally yates is able to go without saying anything that she learned in a classified setting. Thats going to be a big question. And were there further contacts that Michael Flynn may have had with russia beyond the ones that with ambassador kislyak that were disclosed that led to his wiring. Thats one big question. The other question is, i meerngs h mean, how this ties to the broader investigation, hes facing a state department investigation. An ongoing House OversightCommittee Investigation about his failure to disclose Key Information to the on the security clearance forms as well as to get permission before accepting payment from foreign governments including russians, how much more we learn about that could hurt be significant for him. Also how much did will we learn about the vetting process that occurred that led to his hiring and did they know about some of this stuff when they decided to hire him as National Security adviser. And kind of on a less serious note compared to what youre talking about is how much this erodes the credibility of some of the president s most vocal defenders. Sean spicer said she gave a heads up. So did counsel don mcgann. Reince priebus said the same thing. So what extent shes expected to completely contradict them. How bad is that going to be . As these investigations go on, and man nu has a great piec about it. The documents stack up higher than the liawmakers if you stan them up side by side. Listen to this earlier today on cnn. This was a dicey one for democrats. One of the questions about Michael Flynn is were these contacts with the russians okay even if they were a little out of balance or was there co nord nati coordination and collusion. These are not just mere coincidences. Theres a whole classified side of information that i hope the world sees very soon. I hope the fbi and i have every reason to believe will continue to develop this, but this is not donald trump being the unluckiest man in the world to have all of these coincidences converge at the same time that russias interference was taking place. A member of the committee. On the one hand you take what he says seriously. On the other hand, should the democrats be talking publicly about their conclusions based on seeing classified information or should they be saying i cant answer that question right now, i hope we get to a point where we can release this. This is the question, when were going to get to the actual information and what was said and when it was said. And until then its all sort of conjecture. This is when, you know, trumps protests on twitter would also suggest that there is plenty of fire here. But on the other hand, this is a president who and he reacts to any ser perceived slight. One of the things ive heard is that youre seeing a division between the democrats and republicans about the evidence that theyre seeing. A lot of democrats see this as collusion. Shocking. And republicans say that look, we dont know if this is collusion. Maybe this was about a business meeting that occurred between, say, carter page or Paul Manafort in something that had nothing to do with the campaign. Thats what theyre struggling with. The Washington Post researcher at the event says she was, quote, threatened, harassed, and forced to delete recordings and photos of the Kushner Family recruiting chinese investors. This happens over the weekend. I have argued from the inauguration you cant expect everyone to shut down their businesses. Of course they should be able to keep the businesses they spent their time and money working on, but when people do this, is it defensible in any way . No and its the day after trump resign ted this into law part of the spending package. The timing isnt great either. No, this isnt okay. Even if lets give them the benefit of the doubt and say they didnt mean to do this. The fact that it looks improper is what matters. If you were to, you know, be reading the fictitious novel of the Trump Administration and you would get to the chapter where the soninlaws sister goes to china and tries to sell, you know, money tries to get the chinese to invest, that would be the part where youd be, like, this has gone too far. And throw the book away. And isnt this what candidate trump warned, that this was clintoning. Everything the clinton knows do is corrupt. I want to read more. Ms. Meyer wanted to make clear her brother stepped away innian and has nothing to do with this project. Its not to blame Jared Kushner for this. His people, his lawyer is careful to say weve taken all of the appropriate steps, all the steps that have been recommended to us. This is outside the box of what you can fit into ethical rules and laws. This is about perception and to jackies point earlier, its about credibility. And this is a president whos playing fast and loose with the credibility. Does it set off ethics watchdogs . Do what about voters . Immigration reform was a big part. If youre a trump vote nr in wisconsin or iowa, this is the other end. Some people view this as selling access to the United States to rich people. And to drain the swamp, it doesnt look like theyre draining the swamp if family members are trying to profit it on your connections. It will be interesting to see if and when congress, of course controlled by republicans, decides to investigate any of these presumed conflicts of interest that appear to be happening from time to time with trump, Trump Properties, trump relatives, and their own companies. We have not seen that level of interest yet from the oversight committees on the hill. Will that change with stories like this . But thats a good question. Through the entire Campaign Donald trump and the people around him were impervious to criticism because he promised to bring jobs back, because of trade, all the reasons we know. At what point does it ever seep into the con shosciousness of pe out there who voted for him . It doesnt seem to be there yet, but you never know if a combination of these things will get to that point. The president has made clear you cant keep going to Trump Properties. He has made Crystal Clear if thats a yellow light hes just going to drivethru this. This was the 14th weekend he went to a trump property. He played golf again. The president was making the case that staying there is cheaper for the government than staying in manhattan at the trump tower because of security costs. Thats actually true. But in the sense that for those who would say your name and trump, you cant keep going to essentially promotions for trump resorts, his answer is go away. The other thing, the white house doesnt close on the weekends. He can stay there, too, here in d. C. Theres nothing wrong with it. The lights still turn on and everything. But it really doesnt seem like they care. Thats why the two sons that are not supposed to have anything to do with administration, don, jr. Is politically active. We dont know who hes meeting with when he goes to these Trump Properties on the weekend. They close the visitors log too. Who is he even playing golf with . We dont even know if hes playing golf. They wouldnt publicly confirm that. The obama years where they did disclose this information where they would say who he would golf with every weekend, trump doesnt do that. Maralago, the amount of money that was being spent to go to maralago was starting to make an impact. Now of course he doesnt go there because its the summertime. But i think the fact that youve said that people knew he was rich coming in, its one thing to be rich coming in. Its something entirely different to make a profit off of the office by promoting your resorts. Thats where the question remains is when is someone going to put their foot down. I think the critics would have much less of a case if they were transparent. This is who he had meetings with. This is who he golfed with. This is his home, he owns this property. You would have a better case if you were transparent about who youre with. The senate is next and theres one certainty. The process will look nothing like the house colroller coaste. Chaotic is a polite word for what we saw in the house. Methodical is the preferred path for Mitch Mcconnell. As he tries to sort through the same policy that complicated the house debate, an old mcconnell sparring partner trying to rally democrats to put up a good fight. I hope that current members of congress recall that it actually doesnt take a lot of courage to aid those who are already powerful. Already comfortable. Already influential. But it does require some courage to champion the vulnerable. And the sick. And the infirm. I hope they understand the courage means not simply doing what is politically expedient, but doing what they believe deep in their hearts is right. Former president obama accepting an award. The profile of courage award. He didnt say anything during the house debates. How influential is his voice . Do democrats need his voice . Will that matter . It adds another layer, but i dont know that it changes anything. I think youre right, i think democrats are fired up on their own. Frankly theyre looking for someone else to lead them at this point. But just by how this bill went through and what is in it i think has fueled them more than one any person can at this point. The Senate Republicans will have their own problems. People come from Medicaid Expansion states who dont like the keep cuts to medicaid that are in the house bill, people like rob portman of ohio and you have the skeconservatives who a pushing hard to move that to the right and caught in the middle, Susan Collins of maine, and Mitch Mcconnell cannot lose more than two votes in order to get this. And you add to that the senate rules which actually prohibit how much they can do by sir sum venting filibuster, so it its unclear. Mcconnell is a magician. You have the Party Restrictions and the rules about does this impact the deficit. Lets go through for some of the big controversial changes. If the senate gets this, some of the things they dont like could cost millions of people their coverage. Were going to wait until it gets scored by the congressional budget office. Higher premiums for older americans. The caps on medicaid spending. 5248. He has Tea Party Members saying this doesnt repeal obamacare. This has way too much government in it. Then moderates who says the house bill is just not fair. The senate is starting from scratch. Were going to draft our own bill and im convinced that were going to take the time to do it right. I dont think that low income women should be denied their choice of Health Care Providers for family planning, cancer screenings and well women care. Its not the only issue in this huge bill, but i certainly think that its not fair and it is a mistake to defund planned parenthood. If Mitch Mcconnell has to give Susan Collins most of what she wants to get a bill that can pass through the senate, then what happens if it passes, and thats still a big capital f, question mark, what happens if they defund planned parenthood. Then they walk back over to the house conservatives and say here it is, best we can do. Capital i, capital f. The house bill, the senate bill, they go to point negotiators, they sit and work it out, but its hard to see that happening given the nature and the atmosphere of the House Republican conference. My sense is the most likely scenario is that it will go to the house and it would be up to the president and up to Republican Leaders and individual members to say this is the best were going to get, this is what were going to do, were going to get there. But i think that the first step getting it through the senate is going to be so, so fascinating to watch. Because it is a very different dynamic. You do have you dont just have individuals represents gerrymander districts, particularly on the conservative side. You have somebody from maine, you have somebody from alaska, you have rob portman from ohio where they have a very big Opioid Epidemic and he is determined not to leave those people high and dry by cutting their medicaid. I think its really in some ways unfair to a lot of house members to say the adults near the room, but by nature of the way the senate is made up, that is the case. Yet mcconnell back when he faced his own tea part challenges promised to rip obamacare out by the roots. But because its been in place so many years, because these drug treatment programs and planned parenthood are very popular, thats the defining issue. Add to that how many governor races next year . And the house bill passes the buck to a lot of governors, would you opt out of this. John kasich, respect governor of the state of ohio says this bill is horrible. 8 billion is not enough to its ridiculous. And the fact is states are not going to opt for that. I think the fundamental issue here are the resources. I dont want to give you exactly the numbers, but about half the resources in this bill that were in obamacare. Now, i can tell you that we can do with less resources but you cant do it overnight and you cant and you cannot give people a 4,000 house insurance policy. You know where theyre going to be . Theyre going to be living in the Emergency Rooms again. Conservatives are banging their head on the wall when they see a republican governor saying we need more resources. Politically when youre trying to take something away, trying to scale Something Back and you have to answer a governor like kasich, a senator like collins, this is the box theyre in. Are you saying that health care is complicated . And its going to fall on mcconnells shoulders almost entirely. We were talking to some white house officials over the weekend about their plan for pushing this through the senate. We saw the Trump White House go through a learning process in the house, but as the points been made here several times, the senate is a different beast. Mcconnell gave trump a win on gorsuch by changing the rules and one of the big things the white house is hoping for here is that theres further breakdowns in the Health Insurance market to give this thing some momentum. Thats a risky card to play and also not just playing with peoples Health Insurance, but also assuming that is going to motivate the senators to pass your bill. One person to watch will be dean heller, the Nevada Republican senator whos probably the most vulnerable republican senator there is up for reelection in 2018. Where does he go on this . And if it moves too far to the right he could bail on this. If hes the one vote who could actually allow this to go forward, hell get a lot of pressure from conservatives in his own party. Hes already hearing a lot from activists back home at his town halls, so this is going to be a big issue for him and Mitch Mcconnell is going to be thinking about that as well. Republicans are right when they say there are huge structural issues with obamacare in certain parts of the country. Insurers pulling out in virginia and eye waciowa. The question is if they just let that keep happening and trump keeping saying thats the democrats fault. Hes the president. If youre swimming because this is happening to you and the president of the United States drives by and says well, it happened to the life president , im not going to throw you a life raft, can he get away with that . Its really hard because republicans control every lever of government to let people drift. So do they blow it up and have a summit because they cant get together . It would be nice. And after the house the first time the house vote fell into pieces, that was the prevailing in some corners in the white house and on capitol hill, we heard paul ryan say forget it, were going to let obamacare live and thats the law of the land and thats the end of it. Because people in the white house particular realize wait a minute, we cant do this, because we will own this. We are the ones who are not giving the life raft. Thats why they switched gears and they push today through. Presumably thats still the thought process going in and going all the way through a potential bill signing, but you never know when it gets hard. When you bring democrats into the equation, you have to say youre fixing obamacare, not repealing it. Dont wait for that movie. That will not be in theaters this summer. Macron is a centrist, former investment banker whos never held political office. He won getting 66 of the vote against marine la pen of the National Front who ran on antiimmigration platform. As he claimed victory he acknowledged the frustration of the voters drawn to his opponent. Translator i understand the anger, the anxiety, the doubt which many of you have expressed and it is my responsibility to hear that. Protecting the most vulnerable, organizing solidarity, fighting all forms of inequality and discrimination in struggling, fighting for your security and by guaranteeing the unity of the nation. Hes a political newcomer, but his win cheered establishment forces worrying that france but la pens defeat does not wipe away the antiestablishment mood. I really believe that these populists are changing the character of the politics just by being there. Even mainstream candidates are having to respond to their agenda. You see fewer people talking about free trade. You see countries talking about industrial policy and protectionism. Its hard to defend immigrants almost anyplace in the world today. And so the rise of populism and nativism really which they rather go together, the rise of nativism is having an impact on the politics even if the candidates arent winning. Thats interesting point from the former secretary of state that yes, in this case the centrist, the more pro establishment candidate won, but that doesnt wipe away peoples fears about whats the economy of tomorrow. Peoples fears about security and terrorism. Peoples fears about immigration and national character, if you will. The question is, france is one example. Britain is still pulling out of the u. K. This country were still dealing with donald trump and trade and the issues we have here. The trade point was absolutely correct. Hillary clinton called the tpp the Gold Standard and was forced to retreat from that position during the campaign completely backtracked because of the way that it makes a lot of people feel, particularly in those rust belt states that she did not do as well as she needed to to win. You see that playing out and not just here in the u. S. , but internationally as well. And for now the eu seems to be intact because of macrons win, but maybe not for long given the rise of this populace sentiment. I remember covering george w. Bush, her old boss, back when it was a given that republicans were for free trade. When he was pushing for the first time, the Immigration Reform bill, and him saying privately that he was worried about xeno phobia being more rampant. He was right. I wasnt there covering the french elections, but just observing it from here. Youve got to wonder if donald trump were not elected whether or not marine la pen would have succeeded. Meaning whether or not there was such a reaction maybe over reaction to what they have seen in the United States and from the brexit vote. Almost a backlash to the backlash. Exactly. There were other things in her campaign where she obviously was from a party founded by her father that was historically very extremist and beyond extremist. Down right racist. People are talking about this movement not as a trend but what their influence is on politics now. And in france i think youre seeing both sides being able to claim a victory here. For liberals its certainly a reprieve, not a salvation. And for conservatives and for people who inside Trumps White House who have been comparing this to reagan in 87. Maybe next time. Probably next time. And there was a last minute hack in that campaign which proved familiar. The front runners campaign was hacked. And documents were posted on line. In this case some were legitimate. Hillary clinton tweeted in response to this. Victory for macron, for france, to eu and the world. Defeat those interfering with d democracy, but the media that was from last week. I dont think anyones saying she cant talk about it. She talked about it last week. But i cant remember who said this, but james comey and wikileaks didnt teller not to go to wisconsin and michigan and pennsylvania. So it will be interesting to see later this week in Senate Intelligence committee is going to have a public hearing in which all the National Security leaders are going to testify about worldwide threats. James comey will also be part of that panel. How they talk about what happened in france and any connections that they have between what happened in france and they draw that to what happened in the United States last year will be fascinating to see. Senator mccain translation spelled out today, quote, with those words secretary tillerson sends a message to o pressed people everywhere. Dont look to the United States for hope. Our values make us sim hypothetical i c sympathetic to your plight. Dont look to the United States for hope. O that could serve our economic and security interests, good luck to you. Youre on your own. John mccain picks a lot of fights with president s and hes picked a lot of fights with this president and let me turn the snark meter off. This has been an important issue for him. As a former p. O. W. People seek him out because of his experience and because of his speaking out on these issues. Hes picking another public fight with the Trump Administration. I think youre seeing concern because of the number of things that the administration is doing with some of these strong men who have records of human rights abuses in their own countries, but doing this clearly because they view things in a more transactional way the administration does. You stand up for american values, and mccain would say this is an american policy. But theres a different view from this discrimination in the sense that if i can get something with you without criticizing publicly your human rights record, and it clearly rubbed mccain the wrong way. He sees himself as the voice on these issues, but more broadly the voice who has the, you know, maybe credibility, capital, whatever it is, who can stand up and say no, mr. Trump, you are wrong. No, your secretary of state, you are wrong in a way that democrats would sound partisan but from his it doesnt. Because he is a senior senator, but also because of the fact that he has experience with human rights violations. What the administration would say is that they intervened in syria. Well, this is another problem with them not really having a set dock set. Theyre sort of turning a blind eye and intervening when you see your children being gassed in syria. Every president has to do business with bad actors around the world. You have no choice. What rankles people is when you place senator sisi. Praise the president of the philippines duterte says he can come to the white house and see me. Thats part of the criticism. Mccain says in this if by realism, they mean policy rooted in the world as it is, they couldnt be more wrong. Hes trying to be the idealist. Can i be a little bit of th conspiracy theorist . This comes days after theyre considering cindy mccain for a high profile job. She does amazing work for children around the world. We should make that clear. Am i wrong to try to connect those dots that the timing seems a little odd . Youre saying that he doesnt want her to get the job . I didnt say that, but thats one of the things i thought. Maybe trump doesnt notice it really is a remarkable to hear from the senator. With all due respect to the senator from arizona, outside of senator sanders, hes one of the biggest cranks in the september. So when he gets on when he speaks any sort of high tones and appeals to idealism, its remarkable. He know was what he speaks. Some of us think cranking has a place in the world.
