Why is the rnc engaging and coming out and fighting now with the frontrunner . Reporter were seeing a much more aggressive response from Reince Priebus this time. He felt trump went too far when calling the party corrupt and the process rigged. He felt like he needed to respond to this stuff going on cnn. He also said in that interview that he feels like this is going to blow over. There is good reason for that. Donald trump is going to have to play nice with the Republican Party if hes the nominee. The Republican Party has a field organization, a data operation. Donald trump is going to want access to all of that. Trump obviously fighting with the rnc, also adding another big name, and a former rnc staffer to his staff tonight. Ironic. What can you tell us . Reporter it is a little bit ironic. His campaign is going through this transition where theyre doing a little bit more d. C. Outreach and theyre staffing up, which means theyre bringing on more experienced political hands. He knows how to organize these states. As with any seasoned operative, he comes with his own controversy as well. How is cruz responding to this . Reporter its interesting to watch. Senator cruz is largely sitting back and just relishing this moment letting the rnc and trump duke this out themselves. What we have seen from senator cruz is a very pointed and calculated insistence basically to continue to bring up Donald Trumps complaining over the nominating process almost to draw a contrast with how his campaign is able to navigate the delegate rules, continuing to bring up like he did today here in erie, pennsylvania, how his campaign outmaneuvered donald trump in wisconsin. Today he told this crowd that trump is very unhappy. It leads to him whining. People vote for you or they dont. This is a very clear moment that senator cruz is trying to capitalize, to draw a clear contrast between the management of their two campaigns and how much they differ. Outfront now, michael cohen. Michael, let me start with you because the chairman of the Republican NationalCommittee Just about an hour ago here on cnn says hes been attacked. He says what donald trump is saying about the rnc being corrupt is just factually untrue. They can say whatever they want. Theyre trying to thwart donald trump from getting the nomination. Reince priebus knows about it and actually condones it. We believe it. If we believe it, thats what were going on. Theyre making it impossible for an outsider to gain this number of 1237. So heres the thing. Priebus says the rules may be complicated in the states, but these are the rules. No one is changing them. No one has ever gone into the convention and gotten the nomination without getting a majority of the delegates. Heres exactly how he put it a moment ago. Im sorry i cant change the concept of a majority in the United States of america, nor would i want to. I dont think its sour grapes at all. You have all of these groups that are coming against mr. Trump one upon one upon one and the guy is still leading. Ted cruz has no ability to needle anybody. He is 200 delegates shy of donald trump. He has like an 86 win need in order to get to 1237 whereas trump is around 57 . The only one thats mathematically in the game is donald trump. Dont forget were coming into mr. Trumps home territory. Were coming into the northeast. You hear michael saying, look, Reince Priebus is on board with this, is supporting this opposition money thats being spent against donald trump. Does trump benefit from having a fight like this with the chairman of the Republican Party . In the sense it allows him to continue not offering solid policy proposals. Its unfair that people are spending money against donald trump. How would you logically stop this . You would have to ask for some National Campaign rnc apparatus to say you may not run those ads. That is antifree speech. Youre saying the Trump Campaign disagrees with political speech that criticizes him. This is a big problem with donald trump. Donald trump is very bad on First Amendment issues. Thats why a lot of conservat e conservatives dont support him. Let me just finish. Youre making something up, which is totally inaccurate. Donald trump is not against First Amendment speech. He is against the fact that rnc head Reince Priebus is condoning it. How is he condoning it . When they were in wisconsin, its our understanding he was notified and even a participant at times in terms of some of these attack ads. At the very inception when mr. Trump made the announcement is all he asked for is just play fair, let me have my shot, which he has, of course, taken. He is leading by far. What theyre doing is theyre trying to thwart the will of the people. What do you make of these allegations, condoning and involved with negative ads by Reince Priebus . It is Public Knowledge when a super pac releases an ad, just like when the Trump Campaign would release an ad, people see it. Were you away that Reince Priebus was devising the strategy of the ad . There are people that believe along with Reince Priebus along with ricketts and scott walker are in the conspiracy against donald trump. It is a concerted effort to thwart the will of the people. When you have a majority when you see the crowds that donald trump is bringing and you see the numbers that hes winning by and all of a sudden you have 70, 80 million coming against one guy and so on, you have to turn its not just politics. You have to look at whos right there out in front. This is politics, okay . There is no evidence, despite what michael and others are saying, that the system is rigged against donald trump. Maybe something would come to light, but a lot of what youre seeing if it is super pac money and the fact that if donald trump is facing something unusual, which is opposition among the party, to deny him in the nomination. Donald trump is in command here. He is the frontrunner. Hes got the most delegates. He is ahead about 2 million votes. He is a big outside game and a big inside game. The outside is to play to brand. Theres no evidence to support that thats the case. Hes had some stumbles when it came to that. Theres no question that the way the rules are on the republican and the democratic side it is meant to disadvantage the outsider, but he is also benefitting from the fact that the way the primary system is set up this year would allow a frontrunner to consolidate early. Then theres the inside game. Donald trump is now putting together an Establishment Team to try to catch up. Hes hiring some of the most veteran former rnc operatives, right . Thats correct. This is a political argument that is not backed up by anything specific about abuse against donald trump. He can argue that the system seems unfair, but again lets remember he said to the New York Times the other day i only complain about states that dont go well. This is a dangerous political game hes playing. When he accuses other people of crimes, as he did the Cruz Campaign after he lost wisconsin, these are reckless and dangerous charges. People will go to court. They could go to jail for this. When someone wants to be president and has the full force of government, that is a sign let her finish, michael. If theyre willing to make false charges against someone with zero evidence. Are you going to come out with evidence on this Reince Priebus issue when you talk about he was condoning and working with super pacs on ads . If there is evidence, we will put it forth. But there is not. The Trump Campaign understood what the rules were in colorado. They got outmaneuvered by ted cruz who has a very good inside technical game. By the way, i think it is important to remember that politics is rough and the idea of coordinating with outside groups is a charge that is as old as campaigns ive been covering going back to 2000 and beyond, so these are not horrible, reckless accusations. As you know, david, these are amplified in the era of the super pac. Without a doubt. On both sides, the democratic and the republican side, these rules are set up and created by Party Insiders. Thats how they rules came to be. It is not illogical to make the case that they are set up to protect the Party Insiders in some way and to make it easier for the insider person to emerge with the nomination. Donald trump is obviously railing against that. It is an argument with a lot of resonance to his supporters to hear this notion that hes being kept at bay by the establishment. You have to admit the way that theyre doing things in terms of superdelegates and in terms of how delegates are put out there doesnt make a lot of sense to the average person. Were saying its wrong. Wrong . Were saying its not a democratic way to carry out an election. Does she have a point in vermont where he got 86 of the vote . I want to take this moment to welcome Bernie Sanders and jane sanders to the Democratic Party. I think it is necessary to understand that Bernie Sanders signed up to become the democratic nominee. Its not unfair. There is no metric by which Bernie Sanders is winning this race. Hes not winning the states. Hillary clinton is up by 2. 4 million voters. She will be up in pledged delegates and to quote Bernie Sanders. Superdelegates should not overturn the will of the voters. The system is not rigged. There is no thumb on the scale. The fact of the matter is if the system was rigged, the system wouldnt have elected a skinny guy with a funny name from hawaii to be the nominee for the Democratic Party. I do believe this has been an amazing race. Bernie sanders has tapped into something democrats may have been missed, but this is the process. What do you say . But all of the arguments about the democratic nature of how to attract delegates doesnt change the fact that he has to be able to grow his share of the ele electorate or he cant get the nomination.
