This country are prepared to stand up and fight to make this country a much better place. Thank you, all the struggle continues all right. Thats Bernie Sanders. He is not conceding, not dropping out. We have projected that Bernie Sanders will win the montana democratic president ial primary. Thats his second win of the night. He also won north dakota. Hillary clinton had three big wins tonight as well. Were still waiting for california. Thats the big prize. The biggest prize of the night. Thats the biggest state. Of course the biggest prize of this primary season. Right now Hillary Clinton still has a significant lead in california. You just heard Bernie Sanders say it would get closer. Lets get a key race alert on california right now. 39 of the vote is in. Her lead still approaching 400,000. Hillary clinton with 1,111,000 votes. Bernie sanders, 713,000 votes. 60. 2 , Bernie Sanders. 38. 7 . You heard handerson cooper, Bernie Sanders say hes not giving ip. He wants to continue this race not only next week in washington, d. C. , the last contest with its 20 delegates, but all the way to philadelphia. Thats what he said even though he knows its a steep, very steep climb. The struggle continues he said. So does our panel. They continue. Lets get some feedback. What did you think of his speech, ron . I thought it was a strong reaffirmation of his core themes. Hes run an incredible race. Hes changed the trajectory of the Democratic Party, but hes lost the race. He was lossing by 3 million in the popular vote going into night. 630,000 more tonight. Her lead is expanded by 20 . Beat him in 15 states by more than he beat her in any state. Its kind of hard to see what the argument is going forward. Did it sound like the speech of a man about to get out of the race . It did not, but it did sound like the speech of a man who put a marker on washington, d. C. Cited it specifically, that next tuesday we continue to fight until the last primary. So i think hes now bought himself a week of time to figure this out. Remember, eight years ago on the last tuesday primary day, Hillary Clinton also gave her stump speech, reaffirming her arguments. It took a couple days for barack obama and Hillary Clinton to sit down and meet and a couple days after that, to unwind here. So i think he just bought himself a week. If he gives this same speech next tuesday night, i think youll have an entirely different you know, its a process. Its a process hes got to go through, and so he gives his speech. He meets with obama. Said he looked forward to meeting with obama. He got a gracious call from Hillary Clinton, who by the way was booed at his rally. And i think it takes a while to get there. I think, though, if you look at his supporters and you hear the way they reacted to Hillary Clinton, if he does end up joining with Hillary Clinton, hes got a big job ahead of him to convince the quarter you know, 25 of his voters say no way theyd vote for Hillary Clinton. Hes got to figure out a way to mobilize his voters and maybe change the minds of a bunch of them. Phil . You know, first of all, i was just struck by how he has grown as a candidate since we first saw him. Very uncomfortable out there tonight. I thought this speech was the best condensation or distillation that ive heard of his message. A shorter speech than weve heard. Shorter, and what the vision really was. I do think he missed an opportunity to be more gracious toward secretary clinton and to recognize the history of this moment. But i agree with david. He bought himself some time. Its next tuesday. Hes got a lot to think about between now and next tuesday, which is where he wants to go with his Political Revolution and how does he get there and whats the best way to get there . To fight for every vote in philadelphia or to accept reality before . Bakari . That was my expectation going in. I didnt think Bernie Sanders was going to pack it up today. He hadnt packed it up this whole time. Why would he all of a sudden pack it up today . The last primary, hes assured his voters and everyone listening that he would go to the last primary, which is next tuesday. But the breaking news, the highlight of the night, is not Bernie Sanders saying the struggle continues. The highlight of the night is Hillary Clinton making history. The highlight of the night is after 200 years, Hillary Clinton is the first woman nominee of a major party. And just think about this. Youre going to have malia obama, who is the daughter of the first africanamerican president , able to cast a ballot for Hillary Clinton, the first candidate, woman candidate, female candidate in the history of this country. Thats the type of imagery that the Democratic Party can be proud of tonight. I still think the issue here is what does bernie want . And he is going to have a list of some sort, in some way. I would suspect he wants input on the vice presidency, the platform, and there may well be other things. And hes going to have a list of demands here, and hes going to want them. His supporters are going to want them. Hes got some leverage. Thats exactly right. Look, first of all, im grateful that we get larry david for one more week on saturday night live. Theyre on hiatus. As to the question of what bernie wants, the one clear message that came out to me as to what he wants is he does not want donald trump to be president , and theres this you know, theres this narrative that Bernie Sanders and donald trump voters have so much in common. But i think that Bernie Sanders is going to go all out to try to make sure that his voters dont go into the donald trump category. He spent a lot of time talking about Donald Trumps excesses and the things he has said that he finds offensive. This is something hes not going to be able to live with. And i do agree with bakari. You know, i dont know if its because its that late at night. Thats a first. That im low on sugar or im getting sentimental or what. You know, i never thought this woman thing would mean anything to me. I definitely will not vote for somebody because of gender, because of ethnicity, because of color. I vote on qualifications. But i will confess to you that when i saw Hillary Clinton come out today, i did feel something. There was a stirring of emotion in me because i do know that there was a time when there were generations of women before me struggling and who fought so very hard to gain the right of the vote. And i think it means so much to those generations, and id be remiss if it didnt mean something to me. All right. I think were going to take a short break. Our coverage continues. We have more analysis of Bernie Sanders speech and this mow men tuesday night in the president ial race after the break. K about diversity. America is a nation of immigrants. Maybe, and finally yes. Then it was 36 clinical trials, 8,500 patient volunteers, and the hope of millions. And so after it became a medicine, someone who couldnt be cured, could be. Me. All right. We pick it up from here. Hello and welcome to a special morning after the final super tuesday edition of early start. Its just after 11 00 p. M. In california. I guess its a latenight edition from california. Im christine romans. Im john berman. Its wednesday here although its still tuesday back there. June 7th where you are in the west. June 8th here in the east. Nice to see you this morning. Hillary clinton making history overnight and celebrating that history for the first time, acknowledging she is the presumptive nominee for the Democratic Party. And she did it in a pretty big way on this final super tuesday. Maybe bigger than some expected. Still counting in california, but the results look good for her. She told her supporters the choice ahead is clear. Donald trump is temperamentally unfit to be president and commanderinchief. [ cheers and applause ] and hes not just trying to build a wall between america and mexico. Hes trying to wall off americans from each other. When he says, lets make America Great again, that is code for lets take america backwards. All right. Six states voted this time. Hillary clinton won new jersey big. She won new mexico. She won south dakota, which is a state a lot of people thought sanders would win. Bernie sanders won caucuses in north dakota and the montana primary. And as for the biggest prize of all, california, still counting votes there. The totals keep on coming in. About 41 of the vote is in right now. Hillary clinton with a pretty big lead. This is mostly early votes still. A lot of it is early vote where Hillary Clinton was expected to do well. Still, this is a very, very sizeable lead. Yeah, 400,000 lead in votes there. Meantime, donald trump striking a president ial tone, sticking to script, using a teleprompter, making no mention of the controversy over his remarks about a judges mexican heritage. His speech loaded with attack lines aimed at clinton. The clintons have turned the politics of personal enrichment into an art form for themselves. Theyve made hundreds of millions of dollars selling access, selling favors, selling government contracts, and i mean hundreds of millions of dollars. Secretary clinton even did all of the work on a totally illegal private server, something that how shes getting away with this, folks, nobody understands. All right. So much to talk about this morning. This campaign now pivots from primaries to the general election. Lets start with cnns brianna keilar. She is in santa monica for us this morning or last night. In california where Bernie Sanders just finished speaking a few minutes ago. Brianna. Reporter thats right. He finished speaking here just a few minutes ago, and he vowed, christine, to fight on to next tuesday. That is the washington, d. C. Primary. Bernie sanders has long promised that he would give everyone a shot to vote in a democratic contest who wanted to, and he has seen that as the final contest even though when you look at the 20 delegates that washington, d. C. Has, you might say, well, thats pretty inconsequential. He wants everyone to have a shot at a vote. Now, some signs tonight that the writing was on the wall. His speech, only 17 minutes long. That is by far the shortest speech i have ever heard him give. He frequently goes on for an hour or more. So this was especially short. He also did not criticize Hillary Clinton once, and he acknowledged her victories. But heres the thing. Listen to how the crowd responded when he did that. Our fight is to transform this country and to understand and to understand that we are in this together. To understand that all of what we believe is what the majority of the American People believe. And to understand that the struggle continues. Reporter and actually what i thought was going to be tossing to there, christine, was Bernie Sanders congratulating in a very gracious way Hillary Clinton on her victories tonight. The crowd here responded with boos. You heard chants of bernie or bust during his speech tonight. There are a lot of folks here who are really his diehard supporters, who are making it clear they are very much for Bernie Sanders. And you can see how it will be difficult just by the mood that were seeing here tonight that they would pivot over and support Hillary Clinton. There is a long road ahead. Bernie sanders has said that he wants to unify the Democratic Party. Yes, hes going to fight on. But at the same time, we know that the campaigns are in touch, even at the Campaign Manager level. So some signs that behind the scenes theyre building bridges. But you can just see here just how difficult its going to be for Hillary Clinton to really garner support from these diehard bernie fans. Brianna, quickly, what is in store for Bernie Sanders over the next few days. Hes got some pretty big meetings in washington, d. C. Later this week. Reporter thats right. So he is going to first make a stop at home in burlington. Then hes going to washington, d. C. He has meetings. Hes going to meet, for instance, with harry reid on the hill. Hes going to be meeting with president obama. Hes going to have a rally in washington, d. C. And he sent out a fundraising email for people to commit to vote in washington, d. C. The big question is what happens next tuesday or next wednesday. How does that play out . Bernie supporters booing Hillary Clintons name. Also booing the media every time there were news reports during the night of Hillary Clinton having a lead in california. Big boos for that as well. All right. Brianna keilar, thank you for that. But cheering when Bernie Sanders said the big goal did to take on donald trump here and thats something they all must do. So you see bernie trying to temper his message there. As for Hillary Clinton, she was clearly savoring her victories today. She said in her speech that the milestone it is a milestone in u. S. And womens history. Thanks to you, weve reached a milestone. First time the first time in our nations history that a woman will be a major partys nomin nominee. Tonights victory is not about one person. It belongs to generations of women and men who struggled and sacrificed and made this moment possible. In our country, it started right here in new york, a place called seneca falls in 1841. When a small but determined group of women and men came together with the idea that women deserved equal rights, and they set it forth in something called the declaration of sentiments, and it was the first time in Human History that that kind of declaration occurred. So we all owe so much to those who came before, and tonight belongs to all of you. I want to thank all the people across our country who have taken the time to talk with me. Ive learned a lot about you, and ive learned about those persistent problems and the unfinished promise of america that you are living with. So many of you feel like youre out there on your own, that no one has your back. Well, i do. I hear you. I see you. And as your president , i will always have your back. That was Hillary Clinton tonight in brooklyn, speaking to supporters there. I want to discuss now with our panel. Joining us, cnn politics reporter mj lee, josh rogin. Andy dean is a cnn political commentat commentator, and dan pfeiffer, a former Senior Adviser to president obama. Dan is making really his debut on the Early Morning flagship Election Night show. Thanks for being here, dan, who also voted today for Hillary Clinton. Mj, i want to start with you here. You know, history made with Hillary Clinton. She is the first woman to be a major party presumptive nominee. She acknowledged that in her speech tonight, but she did not stick to that. I think also acknowledging in her speech that this election, she intends to make this election just as much about donald trump as it is about whatever history she hopes to make. Right. I mean even though we ended tonight on Bernie Sanders and the news that he will continue to fight on, that he will not leave the race and he intends to take his fight all the way to the convention, i think we certainly do need to keep in mind sort of this momentous occasion that clinton had and this great achievement that she had. Exactly eight years after she conceded to then senator barack obama, eight years ago in her 2008 First White House campaign, i was at her Campaign Rally earlier tonight in brooklyn. A lot of women in the room who were really taking this in as a moment in history. They remember so well the disappointment that they felt eight years ago when she did not get the Democratic Partys nomination. And tonight i think theyre feeling sort of all the more sort of the joy and sort of the remarkable moment that this is, that a woman for the first time has become the president ial nominee of a Major Political party. And my colleague and i wrote about this tonight as well. That in her speech, if you listen, she spoke about her mother, dorothy rodham, and clintons aides say that in preparing to give this victory speech, she was thinking a lot about her mother and really sort of coming to the realization what she was about to achieve and what she was about to celebrate. So sort of a poignant, an important sort of personal moment for Hillary Clinton tonight. Dan pfeiffer, you voted for her today. What were your thoughts on how she handled her speech, the tone she gave . I thought it was excellent. I think she was she clearly savored the moment. It was eight years in the making for her. You know, eight years to the day when she dropped out. Actually more than 200 years in the making for the country. And she set both a positive tone, and she continued on what i think is a very successful trump contrast argument to make in the fall. So i think her campaign feels very good about it. She should feel very good about it, and now the real work begins. Theres clearly a lot more to discuss. Were going to talk about donald trump excessively. Coming up next, donald trump, how he chose to celebrate this last super tuesday. What he chose to talk about on this stage tonight. What he chose to read from the teleprompter and why he was doing so. So much to discuss. Thats coming up. Innovative sonicare technology with up to 27 more brush movements versus oral b. Donald trump will be the first to tell you that he likes to win, and he did just that tonight, finishing first in a bunch of oneman races. Part of his victory speech tonight included attacks on his democratic opponent. Watch this. Together we accomplished what nobody thought was absolutely possible, and you know what that is. Were only getting started, and its going to be beautiful. Remember that. [ applause ] tonight we closed one chapter in history, and we begin another. Our campaign received more primary votes than any gop campaign in history, no matter who it is, no matter who they are. We received more votes. A great feeling. Thats a great feeling. This is not a testament to me but a testament to all of the people who believed real change, not obama change, but real change is possible. Youve given me the honor to lead the Republican Party to victory this fall. Were going to do it. Were going to do it, folks. Were going to do it. I understand the responsibility of carrying the mantle, and i will never, ever let you down. Too much work, too many people, blood, sweat, and tears. Never going to let you down. I will make you proud of your party and our movement, and thats what it is, is a movement. Now, recent polls have shown that im beating Hillary Clinton, and with all of her many problems and the tremendous mistakes that shes made and she has made tremendous mistakes we expect our lead to continue to grow and grow substantially. To all of those Bernie Sanders voters who have been left out in the cold by a rigged system of superdelegates, we welcome you with open arms. And by the way, the terrible trade deals that bernie was so vehemently against and hes right on that will be taken care of far better than anyone ever thought possible, and thats what i do. We are going to have fantastic trade deals. Were going to start making money and bringing in jobs. Were going to put america back to work. Were going to make our own products. Were going to put america back to work. Were going to rebuild our inner cities, which are absolutely a shame and so sad. Were going to take care of our africanAmerican People that have been mistreated for so long. Were going to make you and your family safe, secure, and prosperous, prosperous again. Together we will put the American People first again. First again. We will make our communities wealthy. We will make our cities safe again. We will make our country strong again. Ladies and gentlemen, we will make America Great again. All right. Lets bring back our panel here. And i want to start with andy dean. You are a trump supporter. You heard that speech last night. A couple of things really jumped out at me. I will never, ever let you down. This during a week where hes been sort of fighting with some of the Establishment Republicans. And this direct appeal for Bernie Sanders supporters, looking at that overlap of the criticism of trade deals and fairness for american workers. A good couple of points there. First, remember this is a teleprompter speech. Donald trump did a good job. He obviously off the cuff on the campaign trail is a very entertaining and energetic speaker. But with this speech, he needed to stay focused on the issues to pivot back to the things that voters care about. And thats jobs, and thats the economy, and thats terrorism. So i think by pivoting back to the issues that people care about, donald trump came off very, very strong tonight. And, yeah, he made an appeal to Bernie Sanders supporters. Hes going to make an appeal to all americans who care about raising our wages and getting america back on our feet, instead of getting destroyed by all these countries who are ripping us off with all these trade deals. I thought tonight was a big win for trump. One last thing about his speech. He said, look, im going to talk about Hillary Clinton next week, and were going to talk about her many, many problems. And i think that thats going to start to illuminate the distinction between clinton and trump. And im looking forward to that speech. Its a good point. He did preview that next week he intends to give a big speech exclusively on the clintons and what he said their problems are. Josh, donald trump was on telepromper. Andy was suggesting he needed to focus on the issues tonight. Why . Because over the last few days hes been focused on a lot of other things, namely his comments about this judge, this indianaborn judge, who he referred to as a mexican, criticizing the judge on the Trump University case. Paul ryan called the comments about that judge the textbook definition of racist comments. And now donald trump tonight tells people and i imagine the people he was talking to tonight were people like paul ryan, Reince Priebus i will never disappoint you. Do you i think they heard it, no, i dont think they believe it. I spent a last few days with a lot of senate republicans, and they were just all tied up in knots about what to do about donald trump. You know, theyre bending over backwards to try to find a way to support him, but theres a point at which they cannot just go along. And this is the point, okay . And what we saw over the week was this sort of fiveweek, sixweek effort by the Trump Campaign to convince republicans, especially republican law makers, Republican Leaders, that trump is acceptable, that he can communicate to their constituents, and he can lead the party in a way that wont sacrifice not only this election but the future of the party for a generation. And that was all squandered, okay . So thats what hes trying to do. I dont think hes going to be able to do it with one speech . Why . Because republicans have seen this movie before, right . There was that whole effort where trump came to washington and met with paul ryan, and they all, you know, shook hands and did the grip and grin. But then he totally went back on everything that he said. So until trump actually makes some concessions that people can see, until he modifies some of these more extreme policies like the ban on muslims and takes back some of these things that he said that Republican Leaders like paul ryan see as blight at racist, theyre going to see this as more emtri words. Everyone stay. Josh rogin, thank you. Everyone stays. Theres so much to talk about. So much action overnight in the primary season. Nearing the end of the primary season, and Bernie Sanders vowing to fight on. He says its not over. He says were not at the very end of the primary season. What does this mean for Hillary Clintons plan to unite democrats and take the fight to donald trump . Were going to discuss that next. That is how Bernie Sanders ended his speech in southern california, vowing to stay in the fight until the convention. Our panel once again, mj lee, josh rogin, andy dean, and dan pfeiffer. Dan, you voted for Hillary Clinton today. Youre a Hillary Clinton supporter. You used to advise the president of the united states, barack obama, and here you have Bernie Sanders giving this 17minute speech where to boos when he mentioned Hillary Clintons name, he vowed to stay in this through next week, the washington, d. C. Primary, and he said hes going to take his message his message all the way to philadelphia. What do you take away from that speech from Bernie Sanders . I think that this is the beginning of a process for Bernie Sanders to get out of this race and help unify the party. He didnt attack Hillary Clinton in this speech. He talked about taking his message to the convention. I think under all scenarios, he will push for process reforms, some of his policy to be part of the policy platform for the party. He could have taken different tacks tonight. Eight years ago after the last primary in 2008, Hillary Clinton gave a very feisty speech. Terry mcauliffe, who was her Campaign Chairman at that time, introduced her as the next president of the united states. Wow have thought from that speech she was going to go all the way to the convention. She was out of the race three days later. So i think theres a process in place. I was comforted by that speech that Bernie Sanders wants to do the right thing, get behind Hillary Clinton, and ensure that a democrat succeeds broesh. One of the things he did very early on in that speech is he made clear his number one goal is to defeat donald trump. That seemed like a message to his supporters and Hillary Clinton supporters that whatever im about to say after this, thats still our number one goal. Can we bring the california numbers up because we keep tallying the vote in california. About 41 of the vote in right now. Well put that up in a second so you can see where california stands. 44 of the votes in. The vote is still coming in. Bernie sanders is closing in some, but hes got a long way to go if he wants to win there. Mj lee, Bernie Sanders said were going to fight hard to win the primary in washington, d. C. Then were going to take our fight for social, economic, racial, Environmental Justice to philadelphia. I suppose the question is, is that fight to philadelphia a literal or a met for cal one . Is he going to fight for the issues all the way to philadelphia, or is he going to fight to the nomination . Thats what dan was saying. Dan thinks that over the next few days that fight will be more met for cal than literal. Bernie sanders has to know there is so much responsibility on him now to unite the party even if he does want to take the fight to the convention, whether thats influencing the party platform, making sure that there are certain reforms made to the political process. He knows that i mean we heard the crowd booing. We heard our colleague, brianna, who was in the room sort of noting how intense the negative reactions were when he even brought up her name. This is his responsibility now to go out there and say over and over again to his supporters, Hillary Clinton has become the presumptive nominee when hes ready to do that and make sure this doesnt end up actually negatively affecting the Democratic Party. There was some news right today . Cnn confirmed that Bernie Sanders cutting his staff way, way back. About half the staff will be laid off tomorrow with severance. They pointed out theres just one primary left and thats washington, d. C. Theyll keep going all the way till then. Hillary clinton now the presumptive nominee. It is historic, but she obviously knows she will need the supporters of Bernie Sanders to make even more history. So she is reaching out. She did so in that speech tonight. Whats going on behind the scenes . Thats next. I have asthma. One of many pieces in my life. So when my asthma symptoms kept coming back on my longterm control medicine. I talked to my doctor and found a missing piece in my asthma treatment with breo. Oncedaily breo prevents asthma symptoms. Breo is for adults with asthma not well controlled on a longterm asthma control medicine, like an inhaled corticosteroid. Breo wont replace a rescue inhaler for sudden breathing problems. Breo opens up airways to help improve breathing for a full 24 hours. Breo contains a type of medicine that increases the risk of death from asthma problems and may increase the risk of hospitalization in children and adolescents. Breo is not for people whose asthma is well controlled on a longterm asthma control medicine, like an inhaled corticosteroid. Once your asthma is well controlled, your doctor will decide if you can stop breo and prescribe a different asthma control medicine, like an inhaled corticosteroid. Do not take breo more than prescribed. See your doctor if your asthma does not improve or gets worse. Ask your doctor if 24hour breo could be a missing piece for you. Bernie sanders mentions Hillary Clinton, he gets boos. Josh rogin, how much work does Hillary Clinton need to do to bring on board those Bernie Sanders supporters . Well, as the reports show, the negotiations behind the scenes are already going on between the two campaigns. To see what Hillary Clinton can do to get Bernie Sanders to, one, rhetorically support her, and, two, give her all the data and email lists and Everything Else that hes accumulated, now hes going to have some demands of his own. Hes going to want influence over the convention. Hes going to want some influence over the future of the party. Hes got some leverage but time is running short, and he better use it or hes going to lose it. Time is running short. At the same time tonight you heard from donald trump tonight also reaching out to Bernie Sanders supporters. Both of them eyeing that prize. All right. Everybody stay where you are. Much more to talk about and where those sanders supporters will go. Were going to get to that right after the break. Whats with him . Hes happy. But this is 45 reporting, so well see if those numbers tighten. Bernie sanders certainly says he thinks those numbers are going to tighten, and he is vowing to stay in. How does the party unite behind Hillary Clinton. Andy dean, trump supporter, i want to go to you first. One of the very first points that Bernie Sanders made in his speech last night, the very first point or this morning, i should say, the very first point he made was that the most important job here was to defeat donald trump. Donald trump in his own speech said, hey, sanders supporters, come over here. We have a lot in common. How is donald trump going to convince those Bernie Sanders supporters that they should vote for trump . Right. Well, look, these Bernie Sanders voters and there are millions of them are in play right now. Theres no guarantee that theyre going to go to Hillary Clinton. Now, you know, statistically if you look at the type of voter that they are, theyre more likely to go to Hillary Clinton. But if youre a swing Bernie Sanders voter and youre interested in trade deals, and youre interested in wage increases, then the candidate youre going to pick is donald trump because the best way to increase wages is to have a stronger economy and have better trade deals. And donald trump is somebody who understands the private sector. Hillary clinton is somebody who does not get the private sector. Shes been a bureaucrat her entire life, and Bernie Sanders has been railing against Hillary Clinton, her privilege, her connections to wall street and goldman sachs. So i think that these on the fence sanders supporters could easily go to donald trump. I dont think thats farfetched at all. The question is will they do it even if Bernie Sanders doesnt want them to and fights against it. That will be one of the subjects we discuss when early start continues right after this. Good morning and welcome to a special morning after the final super tuesday edition of sta early start. It is 3 00 a. M. In the east and midnight in california where they are still counting the votes. Lets take a look at where the vote stands right now in california. Hillary clinton at 58 , about a 400,000 vote lead. Now, this margin, it is shrinking. It has been shrinking over time. Bernie sanders getting closer. Can he close enough . Just dont know yet. No call to make just yet. Now, even without california, history has been made overnight in this election. Hillary clinton, the first woman to be the presumptive nominee of a major party, the Democratic Party. And last night in brooklyn, she spoke to supporters and talked about the path ahead. Donald trump is temperamentally unfit to be president and commanderinchief. And hes not just trying to build a wall between america and mexico. Hes trying to wall off americans from each other. When he says, lets make America Great again, that is code for lets take america backwards. All right. Six states voted in the final super tuesday. Hillary clinton won in new jersey, pretty big. New mexico and san diego, which was a little bit of a surprise. Bernie sanders won in north dakota and montana. And again they are still counting votes in california there. Hillary clinton, you can see, with this lead although that includes the early vote which typically she does very, very well in. Well continue to watch those numbers. Meanwhile, donald trump striking a president ial tone. Hes sticking to the script and sticking to a ple prompter, making no mention of the controversy over his remarks about a judges mexican heritage. So much to talk about. Ill Start Talking about it right now. Were joined now by an aware of people. Want to first go to tal cop man. Again weve been talking about this all day, since Hillary Clinton became the presumptive nominee 24 hours ago. But it was history. She finally acknowledged tonight as she spoke to reporters in brooklyn. Yeah, thats right. You know, we wrote yesterday about how it was sort of an odd historical moment, really muted when all of a sudden the Associated Press and then us and some of the Major Networks decided to call it for her based on our count of delegates. And she couldnt quite declare victory yet because you still had all these votes today. Well, today she finally got her moment, and she had the sort of triumphant moment onstage to the cheering crowds, and she, you know, returned to the Glass Ceiling that she had spoken about eight years ago as she conceded to barack obama. And this time had that sort of triumphant return to the stage to talk about actually beginning to break that Glass Ceiling. It was a really great night for her, and she also handled the speech really well. It seemed like she had her footing. She seamlessly transitioned from talking about the historic nature of the moment to thanking senator sanders for his campaign to then attacking donald trump, and she really hit her marks in that regard. Tal, stay with us. Weve got a predawn dream team here. Mj lee, josh rogin is here. Andy dean, cnn political commentator, former president of trump productions, and dan pfeiffer, cnn political zmentator and a former Senior Adviser to president obama. Dan, i wanted to look at this image that the Clinton Campaign tweeted out, this image of Hillary Clinton. It looks like backstage or in the hallway with this little girl sort of dancing at her feet. Kind of a visual image, if you will, of what the history is here tonight to every little girl who dreams big, yes, you can be anything you want, even president. Tonight is for you, signed h. , meaning she sent this out herself. Is this the imagery that the campaign is going to dwell on here, this imagery of the first woman to get the nomination . And will they sustain that and at the same time attack donald trump and his policies . I think this will be obviously part of the backdrop and the narrative of the election, and tonight was a very important moment. History was made. They acknowledged it. She certainly savored it. Women around the country and frankly around the world savored it. It will be there. I think it will be a very motivating factor for a lot of women, including some who i think voted for mitt romney who had concerns about donald trump, who may come to Hillary Clinton as part of that, with the idea of the first woman president. I dont think it will be the main part of her message. It wont be part of her contrast with donald trump, but it will be part of the election as it should be. I was struck by the fact that even as they were tweeting out these images of Hillary Clinton, you know, with children, with Hillary Clinton making history, mj, that the speech was very much equally focused on donald trump. To me, it was a signal that, you know, whatever history and whatever inspirational message i may try to give during this election, you know, this election is going to be about negatives big time on both candidates. Right, and i think when she decides to tweet out an image like this of her standing with a little girl, you know, this isnt just about making an appeal as a woman or to women. I think youre absolutely right, that this is about drawing a contrast between her self and donald trump. And you notice that in her speech in brooklyn last night, when she went after donald trump, it was not over disagreements over policy. You know, she didnt say, you know, donald trump and i dont see eye to eye on trade policy or tax policy. She went after him on character issues. She went after him on his comments about judge curiel. She went after him for comments that he has made about women. So this is something that we are going to certainly see continue to play out over the next couple of months. I think she wants to make sure that she is the nominee that presents a hopeful message, and that is actually acting president ial when donald trump is very much sort of, you know, being attacked and being criticized for a whole number of different scandals and controversies. Its interesting you talk about that imagery for Hillary Clinton with the little girl, the history being made, the first woman to win a major partys nomination. And then you think of the imagery of the donald trump speech, by the way, where he was flanked by his wife and his daughter. When you see the speech on television of donald trump, you see donald trump with two women behind him. What does Hillary Clinton need to do in terms of the general election on this front . You know, Bernie Sanders, young women, Millennial Women in particular, by and large preferred Bernie Sanders, which is so interesting. They dont seem to be moved by the historymaking aspect of the Hillary Clinton campaign. Well, thats right. As my wife, a millennial feminist herself constantly reminds me, young feminists dont want to be told to vote for him just because theyre women. They want to be able to support women based on their merits. I think when you get down to it, theres very little substantive argument that donald trump can make to those young millennial feminists himself. And in the end, on the merits they largely support Hillary Clinton, and i think thats what youre going to see. I think when you look at the two speeches and the two images being put forth, while the images are the same, the details are not, okay . Hillary clinton, what she needs to do in my opinion is point out her record of supporting women, policies that support women, that includes when she was a senator and when she was the secretary of state. Theres a lot there if she can get into the details, if she can get the people to focus on those details. She needs to continue to point out that while donald trump professes to be for women and not just for women but for lots of different groups, including several minority groups, sometimes theres no meat on those bones, and he has a hard time articuating what exactly that means in the context of his campaign and his presidency. So weve got the big images. Weve got the two topline speeches. Now well have a chance to fill in the details, and i think there Hillary Clinton so far as a substantial advantage. Andy dean, donald trump supporter, do you care to respond to josh rogin there . I would ask you only to additionally focus on donald trump tonight and whether or not you thought it was a good move for him to take that teleprompter up on stage with him, something he is loathe to do, only done i think four other times in this campaign so far. Yeah, i think there are going to be a couple teleprompter speeches but not too many of them. His strength is on the stump. But the one thing he did that was nice in this speech is he focused right back on Hillary Clinton and talking about the fact that she traded hundreds of millions of dollars for access. And on to this point of, you know, Hillary Clinton being the first woman, you know, her gender is not in question. Thats a wonderful thing. Its her judgment that is in question, and nobody in their right mind believes that Hillary Clinton is some feminist or, you know, some Freedom Fighter like susan b anthony. This is a person who has a very checkered past when it comes to womens rights and issues, and we just have to look at what bill and hillary did to many women in the 80s and 90s, i mean binders full of women whose lives were destroyed. If hillary really wants to play up the susan b. Anthony thing, then its only fair that the other part of her record is covered, in which she really hurt a lot of women in the 80s and 90s. Dan, im going to give you the last word here because thats what the campaign is going to have to be ready for from team trump. Theyre going to try to turn the womens thing around on her. Yeah, i would just say dan pfeiffer, go ahead. Sorry. This is a battle that the clintons have been fighting for 30 years now. The challenge for trump is not to tear down Hillary Clinton. If he has any chance at winning this election, he has to dramatically improve his standing with core groups including women, latinos, africanamericans, and young people, who will decide this election. Right now, hes historically unpopular with them. So tearing down Hillary Clinton is good for, you know, cable news. Its not a great way to win the election. All right. Guys, stick around. A lot to discuss going forward. There was celebration. There was attacking all at once on two stages. We just talked a lot about Hillary Clinton. Were going to focus more on donald trump coming up. The speech he gave, what he says hes going to do next week with a speech completely devoted to the clintons. Stay with us. Why do people put milk on cereal . Youre going to see some real good things happen. Just remember this. Im going to be your champion. Im going to be americas champion because, you see, this election isnt about republican or democrat. Its about who runs this country, the special interests or the people, and i mean the American People. All right. You hear donald trump there speaking out to a group of supporters at one of his golf clubs here outside new york city. What was interesting about that speech, it was on teleprompter. Also interesting about that speech, a tone that was more measured than wed heard before. Also interesting about that speech, where it occurs during this campaign, at a time when he has been in the middle of a lot of turmoil because of comments that paul ryan, the speaker of the house, a republican, are says pretty much racist, the textbook definition of racist comments. So did he cross that divide he needed to cross tonight . Back with us, our panel right now. Josh rogin, let me start with you. Reince priebus said great victory speech by real donald trump tonight. Exactly the right approach and perfectly delivered. Thats what Reince Priebus said. What do you think . I think, you know, there are two types of Establishment Republicans. Now, those who are bending over backwards to find tiny bits of the donald Trump Campaign that they can latch onto to justify their continued support and those who are looking for the exit ramp and looking for a way to say, hey, i tried but this guy is just going to be zodoom r the future of our party. Reince priebus has a job to do. His job is to make donald trump palatable to republicans. Its a tough job. Hes struggling at it. Hes trying hard, but donald trump made it a tiny bit easier with that speech. But again the proof is in what he will do from here on out when hes not reading off the teleprompter, when hes talking off the cuff. Well have to wait and see. Tal, youve been live blogging all night, so youve been watching all of these candidates and telling us what, you know, the play by play, if you will. Let me ask you about when this speech this speech comes in a week when he has seen some of the partys leaders really, really upset about his controversy over the heritage of the judge who is presiding over the Trump University matter. He didnt mention Trump University. He didnt mention judges. Hes trying to look forward. But the timing is interesting. Hes saying, im going to fight for you. I will never let you down at a time when there are many in the party who he did let down this week. Absolutely. I thought the Reince Priebus tweet was really telling tonight, and i had a slightly different read on it than josh, which is when Reince Priebus is 100 happy with how donald trump comported himself tonight, somethings a little off. And theres a Cardinal Rule in politics, in sports, in any sort of game like this. You want to be fighting on your turf. And here we are, the last night of the primaries. Its sort of Donald Trumps victory moment going into the convention that he can claim. And hes reading off a teleprompter, which just yesterday he was making fun of Hillary Clinton for doing, and hes muted, and hes exactly what the sort of Establishment Republicans want him to be. Its a very unusual place for him to be. And, you know, i think that he had a decent speech, and he showed that he can read from a teleprompter and follow a script. But it definitely wasnt the donald trump that has energized all his supporters and gotten him here. So it will be interesting to see in the coming days and weeks when he isnt coming off these brutal five days or so of criticism from inside his own party, which donald trump we get. But im not sure the Republican Party actually wants the donald trump that makes them 100 happy. Im looking at andy deans face. Do you agree with tal . This is sort of a capitulation in tactics from donald trump . No. She make smz good points. Personally, i like the nonteleprompter trump. I mean thats the trump that i knew for seven years when i worked for him, and i think thats the candidate Republican Voters fell in love with. This is a guy who got more votes than any republican nominee in history. So we like that guy. But at the same time, you know, he has to expand the base, and i think the teleprompter here and there can help him do that. Now, i dont think hes going to do that all the time. But ill tell you this, though. The media says to donald, hey, you need to play it straight. You need to calm a little and, you know, thats what the teleprompter is. But then all of a sudden when he does that and hes calm and measured and he has a teleprompter, theyre like, hey, wheres the fun nonteleprompter trump. Sometimes hes damned if he does, damned if he doesnt. I think youre going to see a mixture of both trumps and i think its going to take both of them to win. Thats fine. He knows how to win. He said im not changing, im not changing. This is who i am. Im not changing. But then you see sort of the demeanor last night and you wonder if he is trying to make that pivot to being more president ial. But youre so right, andy. It is the other trump that everyone really fell in love with. Dan pfeiffer, if trump can manage to get his Republican Leadership behind him, can he make inroads, do you think, with those Republican Voters who are still concerned that trump doesnt speak for the mainstream of the Republican Party . Sure. He has an opportunity to make some inroads there to help more unify the Republican Party. He has an opportunity. Its challenging for him. This week was fairly devastating in that regard. Hillary clinton is a pretty good motivator of Republican Voters given the long history there. But just winning romneys voters is not means that he will lose in a huge electoral landslide. He has to do much more than that. So he is in a massive deficit to actually winning the election because he has to unify his voters just to get to romneys, you know, 47 ironically. And then to get to 50. 1, he has to do better with much better than romney or even george w. Bush did with hispanics, asianamericans and africanamericans and thats a big challenge. I just want to make clear one thing. Donald trump did not apologize for the comments he made about the judge at all today. They put out a statement where he said they had been misconstrued by the media and then he didnt talk about it at all night. He has. Particularly changed his tone. Hes just perhaps changed his focus. A lot more to discuss including the counting still going on in california right now. We have some more votes in. Take a look right now. 50 , a full 50 of the vote in. Hillary clintons lead is shrinking but its still nearly 400,000. A lot of this is early vote, but as the actual day of vote comes in, not changing too, too much. Bernie Bernie Bernie bernie but you all know it is more than bernie. It is all of us together. It is what this movement is about, is millions of people from coast to coast standing up and looking around them and knowing that we can do much, much better as a nation. We are going we are going we are going to fight hard. We are going to fight hard to win the primary in washington, d. C. And then we take our fight for social, economic, racial, and Environmental Justice to philadelphia, pennsylvania. You can hear Bernie Sanders there saying hes going to fight on to the washington, d. C. Primary, which is next tuesday, and then take the struggle for social, economic, and racial and Environmental Justice to philadelphia. That is the convention. We still havent called california by the way. In california, they are still counting votes. Our latest count right there, 51 now in. Hillary clintons lead expanding actually in the numbers to 398,000 votes, though shrinking in percentage. That vote different rens, nearly 400,000, hasnt changed all that much. It could be indicative of what is to come as this night and morning continues as they count the vote. Mj lee, to Bernie Sanders, who did not get out of the race even as this network and many others have declared Hillary Clinton the presumptive nominee, he says he will fight for the primary in washington, d. C. And then take his struggle on the issues to the convention. But this coming week, there are so many fascinating events. Bernie sanders laying off half his campaign staff. Bernie sanders with meetings with harry reid and president obama. Its going to be fascinating, mj, to watch his moves. Yeah, really fascinating to see exactly how he handles the next couple of weeks. Whether he really makes the focus about his supporters and making sure that hes giving them a voice, or whether this is really about continuing to go after Hillary Clinton, which, remember, in his speech tonight he really did not mention her at all. He said that he would victories, but not really her victory, the singular, the fact that she has actually clinched the Democratic Partys nomination. Now, of course, there is going to be a lot of pressure building in the coming weeks from Democratic Leaders. There has already been a lot of criticism from, you know, rank and file members as well as Democratic Leaders for him to get out of the race and allow Hillary Clinton to really focus on her race against donald trump. And to be honest, i think that she has done that, and she is moving in that direction. Her speech tonight was really about sort of the moment in history of her clinching the nomination, and then really pivoting to the general election and going after donald trump and drawing contrasts between herself and donald trump, the republican presumptive nominee. So i dont think, you know, from her perspective, it really matters that shes that he is remaining in this race as long as he handles himself in such a way that he can help her as he takes on donald trump in the fall. You know, dan pfeiffer, helping her as she takes on donald trump in the fall, its interesting to me when i listened to Bernie Sanders tonight, he talked about how he looks forward to working with president obama to unify his party. He didnt say her. The white house putting out a statement saying that at the request of Bernie Sanders, he would be meeting with the president at the white house, i think, on thursday. Notable that it was Bernie Sanders request to meet with the president. How much influence will Bernie Sanders have in the platform of the party, in what happens in philadelphia, the choices of v. P. . Does he really have the influence that it seems like hes trying to hold on to . I think hell certainly have influence at the convention in terms of the party platform, you know, whatever reform process is going in place about how nominees are picked. I dont think he will have any influence on Hillary Clintons nominee, nor should he v. P. Nominee, nor should he. Hillary clinton had none on Barack Obamas in 2008. Thats really the decision of the party nominee. But he has turned himself from a backbench, unknown senator to a very powerful force in the Democratic Party and progressive politics in the country and he can leverage that not just in this campaign to defeat donald trump but to push for the issues hes spent his whole career on going forward. I believe he will do the right thing. I was comforted by the tone of his speech. I was comforted by the fact that he did not go after Hillary Clinton. This is a hard process. Sniffing the white house is intoxicating. It is very hard to come down from a president ial campaign, but when you think you might have if theres a moment you can picture yourself in the oval office and air force one, losing is that much harder, and Bernie Sanders is in that position. So theres going to be a process with himself and his campaign and supporters to get there. Im confident theyll get there, but its going to take a little bit of time. I think the president can help bring this to closure sooner than later. Tal, theres an article in politico which talks about Bernie Sanders driving this ship and being the one to keep the pressure on Hillary Clinton over the last few months. It was Bernie Sanders who wanted to make the statement after the Nevada Convention according to this article that didnt apologize for the violence there, et cetera, et cetera. Do you think its in his heart to back off and get in line with the Democratic Party right now . It certainly seemed to be tonight. You know, you could be a bit pessimistic about it and think that perhaps he wanted to give Hillary Clinton and, you know, women who may feel that this night is extremely historic, just give that space. Well see what comes tomorrow. As she delivered her remarks, his campaign sent out a reminder to his supporters about the rally that he is planning in d. C. On thursday. And, you know, we could really parse his words tonight. Also it was a very uncharacterically shoot speert. He pledged to continue the fight, but what we didnt hear from him tonight is a promise to actually secure the nomination, and thats something he said throughout this Campaign Even when the math was tough. He was pledging to turn superdelegates, to take the fight and get the nomination and we didnt hear that from him tonight. All right, guys. Thank you so much. Dan pfeiffer, andy dean, i think we have to say good night to you guys. Lucky you, you get to get some sleep. Obviously we are in for quite a few months here. Based on what we saw last night with these victory speeches for donald trump and Hillary Clinton, they are going to go after each other hard for the next few months. What will that look like . Thats next. Be the you who doesnt cover your moderate to severe plaque psoriasis. Be the you who shows up in that dress. Who hugs a friend. Most people using stelara® saw 75 clearer skin and the majority were rated as cleared or minimal at 12 weeks. Be the you who talks to your dermatologist about stelara®. Together we accomplished what nobody thought was absolutely possible. It may be hard to see tonight, but we are all standing under a Glass Ceiling right now. Donald trump is temperamentally unfit to be president. We will make America Great again. That is code for, lets take america backwards. The clintons have turned the politics of personal enrichment into an art form for themselves. Hes not just trying to build a wall between america and mexico. Hes trying to wall off americans from each other. Hillary clinton turned the state department into her private hedge fund. Whether you supported me or senator sanders or one of the republicans, we all need to keep working toward a better, fairer, stronger america. All of those Bernie Sanders voters who have been left out in the cold by a rigged system of superdelegates, we welcome you with open arms. I know it never feels good to put your heart into a cause or a candidate you believe in and to come up short. I know that feeling well. The last thing we need is Hillary Clinton in the white house or an extension of the obama disaster. The stakes in this election are high, and the choice is clear. That was one night. That was one night. That was last night. How many nights are there left until november 8th . Wow. This is going to be some election. Both candidates chose last night to knock down and hit each other hard. And this was the Hillary Clinton we recognized because this was a culmination in some ways of her campaign speeches. It was not the donald trump that we recognized, right . This was a prompter donald trump. It was uncomfortable at times. I thought he was only having fun when he was adlibbing and im curious how long he can stick with this prompter. Mj, its true the two attacks against each other really kind of frame, i think, whats going to happen between now and november 8th, doesnt it in. The two attacks between yeah, just the imagery we saw last night, the way they were each, you know, going after the other one. I mean now weve entered the general election essentially. Yeah, and it shows that even though Bernie Sanders has decided to stay in the race, Hillary Clinton has moved on, and she actually moved on a while ago. And i think donald trump, by focusing on Hillary Clinton and promising the speech that is going to be largely focused on clinton next week, is trying to also move away from the recent wave of controversies, including his comments about judge curiel. Really noticeably not addressing that issue at all tonight in his speech, not taking questions, and as brian said, sticking to the teleprompter. Interesting that trump did not acknowledge the historymaking moment of clinton being the presumptive nominee, the first time a woman is the nominee of a major party. The fact that he didnt bring it up, didnt talk about it, i thought was curious. It would have been an easy thing for him to do he chose not to. Back to the Hillary Clinton side, there was zero subtle about her attacks on donald trump. She said donald trump does not have the temperament to be president. Her message is she doesnt think donald trump has the temperament to be president. It was interesting to see it placed in such stark terms. Very much so. One thing i thought was very interesting. You see when she acknowledged sanders supporters who obviously did not vote for her, she also mentioned other republicans. Other republicans who did not support donald trump and who dont believe that he is the best person to lead this country forward. Appealing to them, trying to get them to come on board. I thought that was a new approach that i had not seen recently. Josh, i want to talk about the historymaking aspect of this campaign. Ill start with you, josh, because theres the obvious history that the Hillary Clinton campaign made. They even tweeted out a picture of Hillary Clinton with this little girl either backstage or in a hallway where you can sort of see the imagery of Hillary Clinton as a role model to every girl who dreams big, yes, you can be everything you want, even president. Tonight is for you, h. And then donald trump is historymaking too. He beat out 16 other people for his job here, for this role here. And quite frankly a lot of them were very well qualified. Josh, talk to me a little bit about what that means for us in the weeks ahead. Just both campaigns have a degree of history here. Sure. I think what youre seeing is that both campaigns realize the basic truth about president ial elections, and you hear this every four years. When people are put to a buy nary choice of would you like the status quo, or would you like Something Different, most will go with Something Different. Its just something about our politics that keeps presenting itself. So what you see is Hillary Clinton presenting herself and her campaign and her vision as Something Different. She talks about progressive change. She talks about the evolution of big issues over generations and how about Donald Trumps platform represents a turn to the past, a turn to things that we already know. And donald trump presents a very different and totally incongrewous vision of what Something Different means. For him, Something Different means antiestablishment, antithe system. So theyre both making the same argument in totally different ways. I want to look at the california boards. Were going to take a quick break, but i want to look at the california boards on the way out here. Hillary clinton, 396,000 votes ahead. Shes holding on to this almost 400,000 vote lead. 57. 5 . 52 of the precincts voting. Were going to continue to follow that. All right. There you can see the counting in california is still ongoing, and Hillary Clinton now has a 400,085 vote lead. Its actually climbing by the numbers at least a little bit. It is. Bernie sanders with 41, just shy of 42 of the vote there. So the final super tuesday is in the books. Theyre still counting those votes in california. Bernie sanders says hes staying in, so where does the race go from here . Lets bring our panel back again. I want to talk to mj lee first. Hillary clinton with a 400,000vote lead in california. Give us a little bit you know, pull the curtain back on the operation in california and just how much work and how much focus they had on this really big, important, blue state. Yeah, really important to keep in mind is that the Clinton Campaign never even expected california to be a close race or a race that they would have to Pay Attention to coming so late in the cycle. But sanders, of course, decided to essentially camp out in the state and put all of the stakes in the state of california. He has been spending a lot of time there, campaigning there, really crisscrossing the state. So the Clinton Campaign really went in, all in the last couple of days, making sure that this would not end up being really an embarrassing loss, even if its just symbolic, coming at the end of the primary season. I think the california primary was a state where we really saw the advantages that the Clinton Campaign has in terms of having a ground game, having surrogates all across the state that could campaign for her, and the surrogates were especially important in the campaigns outreach to nonwhite voters. They had surrogates of color doing phone banks, making sure that they were speaking at rallies and walking in marches. So really an allout get out the vote effort that i think sanders was not able to pull off. Remember, sanders didnt even have a single significant political endorsement in the state of california. So if he were to somehow win in california, that would be huge and a huge loss for Hillary Clinton, not something that we are expecting. To be clear where we are right now, Hillary Clinton leads by 400,000 votes. A little more than half the vote count at 54 . Still a long way to go. However, look, if it were to finish like this or even close a little, this would be a very big victory for Hillary Clinton, bigger than any of the polls had suggested. Perhaps indicating that something she has done over the last three days has swung that state more to her side. Maybe that big speech on friday. Tal, i want to shift gears just a little bit and talk about the next week of this campaign because we learned a lot of interesting details about what all three current candidates are doing. You know, we talked about Bernie Sanders. Hes going to the white house to meet with president obama and harry reid. Hillary clinton in a week, shes going to swing states, ohio and pennsylvania. I suppose you could say donald trump is going to Hillary Clinton. I mean hes got a big speech planned on just the clintons. Interesting trajectory for all three of them. Yeah, its sort of like tonight or last night based on how long youve been up is sort of first night of the rest of our lives, right . Like this was the general election kickoff that we saw tonight. And you see the two presumptive nominees are right there. Theyre focusing on those battleground states. And, you know, Bernie Sanders has pledged to fight on and continue through the d. C. Primary next week, which were not giving a ton of attention to because its a very small delegate total compared to california tonight, which had almost 500 delegates up for grabs. You know, were talking low double digits here next week. But thats going to be more of a symbolic thing for him, to continue and to continue to try to get some leverage as he pushes some of these policy proposals. We have the presumptive nominees, on the other hand. Theyre in an allout battle for that squishy middle. For the people that are going to decide the election this november. If she wins california, and shes got a 400,000 vote lead right now. If she wins california, shell have won 16 of the largest 20 states, right . You know, and made history. The first woman to be the presumptive nominee of either party. Yet bernie is staying in, and the challenge of bernie has been so much of the story line over the past few days. If she wins california, does that story go away. We see strong voter turnout in california. There was concern that the out lets, essentially calling Hillary Clinton the presumptive nominee would hurt voter turnout. Many millions went to the polls in california and elsewhere. It does seem to me that next tuesday in d. C. , that could be sanders chance. Josh rogin, 30 seconds. Last word on these three candidates in the next week. Well, youre going to find donald trump trying to go after Hillary Clinton for public corruption. Hes going to bring in the clinton foundation. Hes going to bring in everything that he can think of, the paid speeches. The question is whether or not he has any facts to back up those claims. Hes good at hurling bombs. Hes not really good at explaining them. All right, guys. Stick around. A lot more to discuss at the top of the hour, including how this selection will look different as of this morning. Early start continues next. One day a rider made a decision. The decision to ride on and save money. He decided to save money by switching his motorcycle insurance to geico. Theres no shame in saving money. Ride on, ride proud. Geico motorcycle, great rates for great rides. Be the you who doesnt cover your moderate to severe plaque psoriasis. The first woman to win a major partys president ial nomination, basking in the glory, claiming that nomination but keeping a laser focus on donald trump, who is promising, promising a brutal personal battle for the general election. Good morning. Welcome to early start. Im christine romans. Nice to see you this morning. Im john berman. Its wednesday, june 8th. Its 4 00 a. M. In the east, 1 00 a. M. Out in california, where they are still counting votes right now. You can see right there, theres the latest vote total. Hillary clinton leading by nearly 400,000 votes. Even without that, Hillary Clinton did make history last night. She claimed victory in the democratic race. The first woman ever to become a major partys presumptive nominee, including super delegates right now, Hillary Clinton has well, we dont know how many she has. She went over the top. 2,630. That is including super delegates. Well over what she needs to secure the nomination in july. She has also now won a majority of the pledged delegates. Of the six states voting in yesterdays final super tuesday, clinton won at least three with a big victory in new jersey. Closer margins in new mexico and south dakota, although there have been some hope in the Sanders Campaign that he would take south dakota. Sanders won montana and north dakota. Still hanging in the balance, california, where clinton still has the lead here. About a 400,000 vote lead here. In her victory speech, clinton basked in her historic moment but did not take her eyes off donald trump. He returned the favor. He promised to be a fierce competitor. The choice is clear. Donald trump is temperamentally unfit to be president and commander in chief. [ cheers and applause ] and hes not just trying to build a wall between america and mexico, hes trying to wall off americans from each other. When he says lets make America Great again, that is code for, lets take america backwards. The clintons have turned the politics of personal enrichment into an art form for themselves. [ cheers and applause ] theyve made hundreds of millions of dollars selling access, selling favors, selling government contracts, and i mean hundreds of millions of dollars. Secretary clinton even did all of the work on a totally illegal private server. Something that shes getting away with nobody understands. A lot to discuss this morning, or tonight if youre in california. We have just the people to do it. Cnns senior media correspondent, breen stelter, eugene scott and josh rogan, columnist for the washington post. Eugene, when you listen to those two candidates and their speeches last night, give me your headline. What is the takeaway as we move forward in the next weeks . I think one of the big takeaways, specifically with the Hillary Clinton speech, is this campaign would be a forwardmoving campaign that is reflective of the increasing diversity and new face of america. The historical moment of last night and even her line about donald trump trying to separate americans from americans seems to be a huge theme of what she wants to communicate, that shes bringing with her a Diverse Coalition of supporters who have strong ideas about what america can be, not just for themselves, but for people that are different from themselves. That was one of the clear examples that i saw. In terms of donald trump, he seems very much interested in taking america in a new direction away from what we have seen as establishment politics. Where the direction is, where that direction is, is not always clear to people who are who have been following politics historically but those who want to see some change, he seems to be focused on that group. Its interesting, listening to Hillary Clinton last night because over the course of this election and the previous ones she ran, she never wanted to overtly say vote for me because im a woman. However, she has used her gender to court votes in some ways. Overnight, she kind of, basking in the history of the moment, and talking you can see a picture there. That was taken before the event last night. You can see her there with a very Diverse Group of people agewise and racewise. Last night she was talking about her own family, her mother, her granddaughter. Listen to what she had to say. Our children and grandchildren will look back at this time, at the choices we are about to make, the goals we will strive for, the principles we will live by, and we need to make sure that they can be proud of us. The end of the primaries is only the beginning of the work were called to do. But if we stand together, we will rise together because we are stronger together. Lets go out and make that case to america. Stronger together was the very end of her speech. But it was interesting to hear Hillary Clinton acknowledging directly what she considers to be the historic nature of the candidacy at this point. Absolutely. This is something shes sort of flirted how to deal with throughout the campaign. Weve seen her when asked all along sort of what change do you represent, shes made allusions to the fact that having a woman as president would be Something Different. This is the first time weve seen her sort of fullout embrace the fact that her candidacy is now officially historic. If there was a night to do it, this was the one. In fact, her campaign was a little displeased last night, or the night before last, when the Associated Press and our network and others essentially called the race for her because they felt like it was too soon. They wanted the actual primary night to be this crowning achievement moment. It was really interesting. Eight years ago she stood up and made a comment about the Glass Ceiling not being fully broken but having millions of cracks. Tonight the first thing she said was returning to Glass Ceiling analogy and talking about finally beginning to breakthrough. It was a powerful moment for her to be able to sort of claim that mantle. You know, weve also seen her use this woman card retort back at donald trump pretty effectively, saying deal me in. I think this is something were going to see her come back to, especially in a general election against donald trump. And shes also talking about donald trump in that speech, no question talking about her role and her mother and her grandmother, but then talking about her granddaughter, rather, and then talking about donald trump and building these literal and figurative walls. Listen to what she said about building walls. We believe that cooperation is better than conflict. Unity is better than division. Empowerment is better than resentment. And bridges are better than walls. And she went on to talk about how donald trump is building walls among americans. You know, walling off different groups of americans from one another. Is that going to be effective . Yeah, i think Hillary Clinton has a demographic advantage here, right. Especially in some of those key stateds, especially in the southwest. If the poll numbers are any indication, then donald trump has a big problem with hispanics, with muslimamericans, with asianamericans, and some of the other groups hes offended over the last few months. The more Hillary Clinton can focus on that, the better. Its also part of her argument that donald trump is just too dangerous to be president. Hes going to say shes corrupt. Hes going to say shes dangerous, and voters will be put to a choice, which would you rather have. Donald trump says im just different. Im a fighter. Im not a typical politician. Listen to what he said last night. All right. I can read it to you right now. He said, i know some people say im too much of a fighter. My preference is always peace, but ive shown that, ive shown for a long time, ive built an extraordinary business. He went on to say, i fought for my family, now i will fight for all of you. Clearly trying to turn the focus of the controversy over the last few days. And the closest hes come to sounding like a typical politician. I suspect theyll try to use that against him. I dont think this will last for very long. I dont think hell be able to restrain himself and an allusion to an anticlinton speech. He probably will be unleashed. All right, guys. Dont go away. We have a lot to talk about. We havent even mentioned Bernie Sanders yet. Thats still in play. Donald trump promising to go after Hillary Clinton, promises to unite the Republican Party, but can he do it . Plus, theyre still counting votes in california. This, the very latest. 57 now in. Hillary clinton has expanded her lead by about 300,000 votes. We are still counting there. A long way to go. Stay with us. Be the you who shows up in that dress. Who hugs a friend. That was donald trump last night during his victory speech. He was reading from a teleprompter there. A lot made of that fact. A lot made of the tone. Was it a different donald trump than weve heard before . He didnt throw insults and big taunting names. He went after Hillary Clinton very, very hard though. He did not apologize, certainly, for the scandals over the last few days when he went after a judge and his mexican heritage, but lets talk about all of this with our panel right now. Joining us again, an esteemed group of our colleagues. You know, josh rogan, one person who did like this speech was Reince Priebus. After donald trump gave the speech, he tweeted, great victory speech by donald trump tonight. Exactly the right approach and perfectly delivered. Interesting, yes . Its like reince is trying i to pat him own the back. Yes, its good for Reince Prebus that donald trump makes an outreach to the Republican Party, but it doesnt mean it will be successful or sustained. So Reince Priebus mission is to unite all the people within the Trump Campaign. Its not clear either side is really doing it. The donald trump we see reading off the teleprompter, remarks written presumably by his staff, thats a very conciliatory, openminded, outstretched hand donald trump. Whenever he puts the teleprompter away and talks off the cuff or on a conference call, he seems to be a different person. That person doesnt really seem to care what the reince prieb priebuses really think. Its no surprise he didnt mention Trump University and the lawsuit. I want you to listen to the language and well talk about it on the back end. Youve given me the honor to lead the Republican Party to victory this fall. I understand the responsibility of carrying the mantle, and i will never, ever let you down. Too much work, too many people, blood, sweat, and tears. Never going to let you down. I will make you proud of your party and our movement, and thats what it is, is a movement. To those who voted for someone else in either party, ill work hard to earn your support, and i will work very hard to earn that support. Eugene scott, i will make you proud of your party and our movement. This in a week where there are plenty of republicans who were not proud at all and were embarrassed by his comments about a judge. Yeah, indeed. For some people, they would look at that as saying that may be the closest to an apology we will get from donald trump. An acknowledgment that some of you are not proud of my behavior, but i will make you proud and i will represent you in the general. I think one thing thats really interesting and really important is that donald trump is not looking just to be the leader of the Republican Party but of the country. So there are other people outside of the party, including independents, obviously, that he needs to make proud. How he will go about doing that remains to be seen. But its interesting. He said, im never going to let you down, but the fact of the matter is a lot of republicans over the last 24 hours flat out said you did and you have. Illinois senator mark kirk has said hes not going to vote for donald trump. Mark kirk in a very tough senate race there. The speaker of the house paul ryan said the language used by donald trump is the textbook definition of a racist comment. This is almost retroactively saying im not going to let you down, when he is. By the way, he has yet to apologize for that statement. In fact, he did a Television Interview today where he continued to reiterate that these comments were something he stands by and said that republicans should get over it. You know, this speech we saw tonight pretty much perfectly encapsulates the catch 22 we predicted for the Trump Campaign. On the one hand, what has pr propelled him to this point and excited new republicans is the fact he does give the rnc fits. Thats what they loved about him and the fight he had with the sort of establishment gop was exactly part of his appeal. So now all the sudden if you have him sort of kowtowing to the powers that be and performs as Reince Priebus called perfectly, you have a bit of a problem because now the establishment is 100 . So this is going to be a very difficult line for him to tow throughout the rest of this general election campaign, keeping both sides of his party happy. Tonight i think we saw the pendulum swing in the opposite direction. Republicans have been contortionists for the past lake six months. Maybe a year. It will be interesting to see if they can straighten that out. Well, politicians in general are quite flexible. All right, guys. All of you stick around. We have a lot more to discuss. An Historic Senate race shaping up in california tonight. Really interesting here. Youre looking at pictures of two Democratic Women, both minoriti minorities. They will face off in the november election. Youll notice i said two democrats. This is the first time a republican will not be on the ballot there in more than a century. Plus, the votes still being counted in california right now between Hillary Clinton and Bernie Sanders. You can see there Hillary Clinton with a 400,000 vote lead. Just shy of 60 of the precincts reporting. A historic night in the race for the senate seat being vacated by democrat barbara boxer. It appears a republican will not be on the states general election ballot for the senate. Instead, it looks like two democrats will compete against each other in a november runoff. State attorney general Camela Harris is the top vote getter among 34 vote getters. Coming in second, tenterm democratic congresswoman loretta sanchez. Under californias unusual election rules, only the two top finishers from whatever party move on to the general election. Fascinating. Hillary clintons historic night, winning big in several states, now embracing her role as the Presumptive Democratic nominee for president. Welcome back to early start, everyone. Im john berman. Im christine romans. 4 31 in the east. 1 31 in california, where they are still counting votes. Hillary Clinton Holding a commanding lead in the california primary. Twothirds of the precincts reporting now. Cnn is still not calling the race, but history was already made last night. Clinton now officially the first woman ever to become a major partys presumptive president ial nominee, including super delegates she now has a commanding lead here. 2,630, including super delegates. Well more than she needs to win the Democratic Convention in july. She also now has a majority of the pledged delegates. Of the six states voting in yesterdays final super tuesday, clinton won at least three of them with a big victory in new jersey. Closer margins in new mexico and south dakota. Sanders picking up two states, montana and north dakota. And still hanging in the balance, california. Thats right, as we told you, shes still leading by 15 points right now. That vote lead, 402,000 ahead here. Clinton basked in her moment but did not take her eyes or her criticism off her republican opponent. And donald trump in his speech returned the favor, promising to be a fierce competitor. The choice is clear. Donald trump is temperamentally unfit to be president and commander in chief. [ cheers and applause ] and hes not just trying to build a wall between america and mexico. Hes trying to wall off americans from each other. When he says lets make America Great again, that is code for, lets take america backwards. The clintons have turned the politics of personal enrichment into an art form for themselves. Secretary clinton even did all of the work on a totally illegal private server, something that how shes getting away with, folks, nobody understands. Welcome to the next five months of your life, everybody. Lets bring in our panel of political experts. I really think what you saw last night were both candidates trying to frame the rest of this race going forward. In one case, you know, donald trump trying to kind of close the book on a really fiveday awful chapter in his campaign. Hillary clinton trying to open the book in what she hopes will be a turning point and renewed focus for her going forward. Absolutely. This is totally a preview of whats to come. Its interesting, over the last few days when weve seen some of the backlash to donald trump, they were really frustrated he was spending so much time talking about this federal judge when there were moments he could have gone after Hillary Clinton. That was a big indication for me tonight that he listened. He really trained some of his attention on Hillary Clinton, really previewed a major speech coming where hes going to go after her on many of the things that have been swirling against her for a long time. Its really interesting because clinton is at her best when shes backed into a corner or playing the victim. Shes very good when attacked. Donald trump has a tendency to be lured into traps in a way that she might try to lay for him. The way these two are going to dance is going to be fascinating to watch. As we get into debates, certainly it could only amp up the intensity. And how theyll stick to their message. How do you rate the what did you hear from these candidates . How do their Messages Play . The indication is clinton will be negative against trump when necessary on a National Level but have a positive message shell try to express in other forums. Last night was very clear tonally, talking about trump setting a table against him. But at the end saying were better together. Those who words, better together, were all going to be tired of hearing them by november. Were going to hear them over and over and over again. I also thought it was notable how much she leaned into the historic nature of her candidacy. Shes not done this up until now. And barack obama did not do this in 2008. Last night, even wearing white, perhaps a nod to the suffragist movement. She talked about other women who blazed a trail for her. She embraced the fact shes the first presumptive nominee whos a woman from a major party. To see that, to hear that, i couldnt help but think about the women in the audience, the girls in the audience brought there by their parents. This is even the New York Post. No friend to the clintons. I think that was a souvenir. Even the New York Post knows its going to sell a lot of copies this morning with that souvenir cover. A lot of people are going to want to own this piece of history. Lets listen to what Hillary Clinton had to say about architecture here, bridges versus walls, as shes trying to draw a contrast going forward. We believe that kopcooperati is better than conflict, unity is better than division, empowerment is better than resentment, and bridges are better than walls. This has been part of her message really since last friday when she devoted an entire speech to going after donald trump. She now has these clear divisions shes laying out every day. Even in this moment last night, which she could have just chose to give a speech about claiming the nomination. She chose to spend a lot of it talking about donald trump. Very much so. One thing interesting is when you look at Hillary Clinton in that moment, shes backed by people of different races and ages and groups in terms of gender and orientation. Shes making it very clear that it is us, that this is about unity, this is where the new america is moving us forward compared to the optics of Donald Trumps speech, where you didnt see that. It was just donald trump. I think what Hillary Clinton is going to try to communicate is that her campaign is going to be about us, whereas donald trump, she believes, will focus on communicating and his own agenda, his own goals, and moving that forward. By the way. He even held his event last night at one of his golf clubs. Hes got an Unfinished Office space in his building, only a few staffers. Its a small backdrop there at one of his golf clubs, versus Hillary Clinton having thousands of people at a venue in brooklyn. To be fair, Hillary Clinton doesnt own a golf club. Thats true. He was promoting some of his own brand. Lets listen to something he said that struck me about how, hey, hes a peaceloving guy, but he will fight when he needs to. Listen to what he said. Now, i know some people say im too much of a fighter. My preference is always peace, however. And ive shown that. Ive shown that for a long time. I built an extraordinary business on relationships and deals that benefit all parties involved, always. My goal is always, again, to bring people together. But if im forced to fight for something i really care about, i will never, ever back down, and our country will never, ever back down. Josh rogan, hes a lover and a fighter. Right. I think donald trump is mischaracterizing the criticism. Its not that people say hes too much of a fighter. Its that people say hes too thin skinned and not disciplined and cant avoid being lured into battles. Whether its Elizabeth Warren or the Prime Minister of the u. K. The question for republicans is, can this guy be president ial . One night it seems like he can, the next night it seems like he cant. Until he demonstrates at least three days in a row where he doesnt get into some sort of tiff with somebody on twitter for no reason, i think that whole president ial sort of image is not really going to stick. Reince priebus said that song is the girl is mine. But go ahead, do the news. Reince priebus liked what he saw last night. He said this, great victory speech by real donald trump tonight. Exactly the right approach and perfectly delivered, which is interesting. Some people say that doesnt seem like donald trump. I bet he hated that. This was supposed to be a press conference. Then he decided not to catake questions after all. When he decides to take questions again, is he going to be that trump or unleashed trump . You hear him say i will never, ever back down. I thought that was a powerful moment in his speech. Thats exactly what republicans want to hear. They feel like their leaders have backed down again and again and again. I thought trumps repetition of that have phrase was really evocative. Name that tune after the break. Well see how they continue these messages over the next few days. I think itll be interesting to see how much repetition they can get on these themes over the next few weeks until the convention. All right, guy. Be sure to stick around. Hillary clinton reaching out to Bernie Sanders supporters to unite the Democratic Party, but her primary challenger donald trump is vowing to but donald trump also reaching out to those supporters and Bernie Sanders is vowing to fight to the convention. The votes are continuing to come in, in california. Hillary clinton ahead by almost 402,000 votes. We are going to fight hard to win the primary in washington, d. C. And then we take our fight for social economic, racial, and Environmental Justice to philadelphia, pennsylvania. Senator Bernie Sanders vowing to stay in this race all the way to the Democratic National convention in july, but acknowledging the math is not in his favor. Here to discuss is our panel of political analysts, our dream team, our predawn dream team this morning. Eugene, we talked to dan phifer. He said, yeah, he knows the tone, he heard that speech, but he thought he was optimistic that Bernie Sanders sees the offramp here. Yeah, very much so. I think there was a moment in his speech where he mentioned that he knows americans will not support donald trump. I thought that was a very important statement to make regardless of what happens. Whether or not he moves forward or not, what he communicated to his followers is you cant get behind donald trump. We definitely need to move in a different direction. I think what well see from him in this next week, especially following this conversation with president barack obama, its a clear sign regarding what hes going to do next and how hes going to mobilize all of the supporters to move forward in the general election. I think youre right, yeugen. I think dans right that this language was more conciliatory and Bernie Sanders is looking for a way out. However, if youre looking to parse every line, there were other things he said that you could look at and say, well, maybe its not going to to be so easy, like when he was talking about arithmetic. Watch this. I am pretty good at arithmetic, and i know that the fight in front of us is a very, very steep fight. But we will continue to fight for every vote and every delegate. [ cheers and applause ] but tal, if youre fighting for every delegate you can get, in particular if youre going to fight for every delegate you can get past next week, thats when it starts to be an issue. Of course, because that means youre talking about super delegates. That means youre trying to convince people who may have publicly stated their support for Hillary Clinton to switch to a side. You know, talking about parsing words, one thing we did not hear Bernie Sanders say last night is a pledge to actually win the nomination. That was something he has removed from what hes been saying over the past few weeks. But he vowed the fight would continue. They were chanting his name, and he said, it is not just about bernie. He really spoke about the movement as something he has sort of helped kindle but is now a fullfledged thing on its own that he hopes will continue. So hes definitely laying the groundwork for the movement he started and the ideas hes put forward to continue of an outsized influence on the Democratic Party and given himself an offramp if he doesnt get the nomination to be a figurehead in this revolution. Hillary clinton in her speech also acknowledging sort of not bernie but these themes, these themes that Bernie Sanders has continued to hit on. She specifically mentioned them. We can listen to that now. I want to congratulate senator sanders for the Extraordinary Campaign he has run. [ cheers and applause ] he has spent his long career in Public Service fighting for progressive causes and principles and has excite the millions of voters, especially young people. And let there be no mistake. Senator sanders, his campaign, and the vigorous debate that weve had about how to raise incomes, reduce inequality, increase upward mobility, have been very good for the Democratic Party and for america. Josh, she or he, Bernie Sanders, is having a meeting thursday with the president. The white house pointing out that its at his request. Hes going to have a rally. Hes going to do the washington, d. C. Primary. Talk to me about the way forward. Part of that sound bite almost sounded like thank you for influencing things to date, byebye, bernie, but hes still very much alive here. Well, Bernie Sanders, although he knows he wont win the nomination, knows he has a lot of power and leverage. Its not just in the help that Hillary Clinton will need to beat donald trump, but look at all those senate races. All the democrats on the ticket all the way down the line would benefit from having the bernie machine behind them. So bernie wants to have as much leverage as possible. Hes going to meet with the hillary people. Hes going to meet with the president and say, listen, ive built this. If you want it, im going to need some concessions. Those concessions can be shortterm concessions, putting influence in at the convention, longterm concessions, influence how the party operates moving forward. Bernie is trying to maximize his leverage over the next week. What he wants is to make this Movement Something real, something that returns him to the senate in a position of prominence with a whole team of people and a whole list of senators and congressmen who he can lead. You know how you can tell he has leverage . Both candidates who arent Bernie Sanders were talking about Bernie Sanders last night. Hillary clinton we just heard. Donald trump talking about Bernie Sanders also. Yeah, sanders supporters are really to all of those Bernie Sanders voters who have been left out in the cold by a rigged system of super delegates, we welcome you with open arms. [ cheers and applause ] and by the way, the terrible trade deals that bernie was so vehemently against, and hes right on that, will be taken care of far better than anyone ever thought possible, and thats what i do. We are going to have fantastic trade deals. Were going to start making money and bringing in jobs. Brian, quickly in 30 seconds, it was interesting to see donald trump making a play for Bernie Sanders supporters. Sanders i bet watched both that and the clinton speech before giving his own speech a couple hours ago. This must be agonizing for him. This is a vermont senator who made it all the way to the end of the democratic primary, all the way to california. He has seen his views lifted on to the national stage. Now hes not fighting for the nomination. Hes not fighting for the presidency. Hes fighting for what history is going to say about him, which is why its going to be so difficult and hard the next few days to help his supporters accept what has happened here. Perhaps meeting with obama will be the first step on thursday. Speaking of history, a senate race making history in california. Historic race shaping up in california overnight. Two minority Democratic Women may be facing off in novembers election with no republican on the ballot. Plus, were still counting votes in california right now. 61 of the vote in, and look at this. Hillary clinton leads by 14 points, Holding Steady at 406,000 votes. That number is actually growing. Much more next. An historic night in the race for the senate seat being vacated in california by democrat barbara boxer. For the first time in a century, it appears a republican will not be on the general election ballot. Instead, it looks like two democrats will compete against each other in a november runoff. State attorney general Kamala Harris is the top vote getter. Right now in second place, tenterm democratic member of Congress Loretta Sanchez of orange county. Under californias unusual rules, the top two finishers move on in november. Hillary clintons best economic idea may be her simplest, fix whats broken. A new cnn money analysis of clintons proposals show Infrastructure Spending could give the economy and the labor market a big boost. Clinton says she wants to spend 275 billion improving things like roads, bridges, sewers. She also wants to establish a National Infrastructure bank to entice private funding. Critics say that would not Pass Congress due to lack of oversight. And she wants to reauthorize a program to sell bonds to fund projects. Infrastructure has been a main point for Bernie Sanders as well. Economists say clinton will have to beef up her proposals ahead of the general election despite the fact that some prominent experts think trumps plan will cause a recession, he leads clinton in many polls on the economy. All right. Were counting votes in california. Well give you the latest numbers as early start continues right now. It may be hard to see tonight, but we are all standing under a Glass Ceiling right now. Hillary clinton, she embraces history. Reveling in the fact shes the first woman to win a major partys president ial nomination. Shes the presumed nominee of the Democratic Party, though she kept her focus last night largely on donald trump, who is promising a tough race ahead. Good morning, everyone. Welcome to early start. Im john berman. And im christine romans. It is wednesday, june 8th. 5 00 a. M. In the east. Theyre still counting the votes in california right now.
