A lot to get to in the next hour. Im going to begin, though, with Michael Cohen and changing his legal team. I want to talk about this now with michael avenatti, attorney for porn star Stormy Daniels who is suing cohen. Good evening, sir. What does this mean hes changing his legal team, that he split with his council . Well, down, i dont think this is positive development for Michael Cohen or the president for a variety of reasons. These are attorneys that have had involvement with him for weeks on end. Hes paid them likely millions of dollars. I estimate his burn rate is probably 500,000 week. Whered you get that . Thats a lot of money. Its a tremendous amount of money. But thats what you see in these cases with many documents at issue. They stated they had over 15 lawyers working full time, and based on mexperience with new york and los angeles rates, i mean if you do the math it works out to probably about 500,000 a week. And look, this is what happens in these cases. You have defendants that start out and theyre very defiant and they state theyre going to take bullets for their coconspirators and all of a sudden burn rates set in and im not at all surprised by this. I think this source, whoever it is that stated its about having whoever with experience with the Southern District of new york, i dont think it has anything to do with that whatsoever. Its all about money. You were talking about attorneys. Ive had legal experts come on and i would get the statements from Michael Cohens attorneys and whatever his pr people, and i would read the statement and our defense to our legal experts who are not democrat or republican and they would say to me thats wrong. Hes getting bad legal advice. Do you think hes getting bad legal advice . Do you think people were stringing him along because they wanted the money . 500,000 a week that a ridiculomount. And the fact of the matter is, don, there were two option. Option one wasinthe team review the options and option two was having Michael Cohens private lawyreview the documents. The private lawyers advocated for them to review. Theres an incentive for them. The end result is basically going to be the same with the exception Michael Cohen is going to be 2, 2. 5 million lighter in the pocket. Its a bad situation for Michael Cohen and a bad situation for dold trump. How much did you say in the pocket . I estimate its 2 million Michael Cohen has burned. Heres the thing, of all the people on the face of it planet that donald trump should have brought inside the tent, given love should have been not only because he was so loyal but just from a machiavellian perspective this is guy who knew the president for 10 or 12 years. The problem is you have a president that values loyalty when it comes to him but hes not willing to give any loyalty in exchange. And wave seen that in a whole host of context. But heres the problem, nothing lasts forever. And this is going to come back and bite him and i that for two and a half months. Youve been very adamant you think aces some serious charges. Do you think this is a sign charges are imminent when it comes to Michael Cohen . Theres no question in my mind charges are imminent. I dont think hes going to be arrested tomorrow or even next week. I think some of those reports are overblown. Theres no question in my mind, Michael Cohen is going to be indicted and hes going to attempt to flip on the president. But heres the problem, don, with each passing day for Michael Cohen his options get more and more limited. If in fact bob mueller concludes that a sitting president cannot be indicted Michael Cohen may have played his hand too long. Not to mix metaphors but he may be left with no chair when the music stops. If bob mueller concludes that a sitting president cannot be indicted, and i actually believe he will conclude that based on what i know of bob mueller and conservative leanings and his belief related to various legal scholars, if bob mueller concludes that, Michael Cohen is not going to have anybody roll. Hes going to have zero leverage and out on an island. I think if that happens i think this president is going to hang him out to dry. I dont think the president is going to give him a pardon and i think Michael Cohen is going to be sitting there potentially in a prison cell wondering what he did with his life. Well, maybe hes going to help him pay the legal fees. Why hasnt he already . This is one of the cheapest guys on the face of the planet. I said to hold that thought when it comes to having a legal team that has experience wit dealing with the Southern District of new york. Because been said his team has more experience in deali with the law in washington or political, that sort of thing. You said youre not buying that. Im not buying that because it doesnt matter at the end of the day whether youre litigating cases in d. C. Or new york or los angeles. When youre at the feder and youre at a level of this magnitude, whether you have experience with a particular office or not, in my view does not carry a ton of weight. If you look at the lawyers that are prosecuting this case in the Southern District of new york, lawyers that are very, very capable but many of which, they havent been in that office that long. Were not talking about 20year prosecutors. So im not buying that. I think its a bunch of nonsense. I think at the end of the day this comes down to money. Michael cohen has probably run out of money or he doesnt have the money to front, and now these lawyers already taken 2 or 2. 5 million off him have abandoned him. This is what a lot of these big firms do. They talk a big game, but when it really comes down to it theyre nowhere to be found. You sound like you feel sorry for Michael Cohen, hes being abandoned by his legal team. Like the president saying he did something wrong, like comey so thats why i have to fire him. I know he has a family, a wife, kids, i know hes a good father. I dont wish any i will against him, don. I have to tell you im very concerned about his safety, about his mental state. Im just going to state that here tonight. I dont know where this is going to end. I hope hes able to handle it because this is tremendous amount of pressure. It is tough on him because the number of times ive spoken to him, hes worried. He is concerned about his family, especially his son. Look, i dont think people can comprehend how much pressure this is. And look, in that respect i feel for the guy for the reasons ive just stated. But, look, hes been isolated and abandoned by somebody he was l to, mr. Trump, whos shown no inclination to take care of him or have his back. His attorneys haheir o profit motives ahead of his interest, theres no question about that in my view now. This guy has been placed on an island. And people that are twisting in the wind are dangerous. Two things quickly. Allegedly trumps allies are concerned hes going to flip. Should they be concerned . They should have been concerned two and a half months ago when i predicted it. Also how does this relate to Stormy Daniels . Do you think anything that comes out of the recordings or any of the things that were taken in the raids because i think youre waiting friday is the deadline to determine if the things that were taken in the raid, if they were attorneyclient privilege. Anything that comes out do you think its going to be related to your client . I think a number of pieces are going to be related to my client. Our case has gotten better every week. And hopefully Rudy Giuliani will go on fox and friends in the mornitll gets even getter. When we comeack republicans attack psident obama throughout his two terms ying he and ex i wonder what those same republicans would say about President Trump . Well discuss right after this. I landed. I saw my leg did not look right. I was just finishing a ride. I felt this awful pain in my chest. I had a pe blood clot in my lung. I was scared. I had a dvt blood clot. Well, inhis particular district hof is expected to win. Republicans are heavily favored there. Don . Kyung, thank you very much. I want to bring in the director for the center of politics at the university of virginia and the author of the kennedy half century. Lets talk about virginia. Thats whe you are and corey ewart who was just on cnn with chris cuomo. Hes antisemitic, past and a supporter of confederate symbols. He fits right in, don. You know, the guy from nevada, all i could think of when i was watching him is theres another values republican. Larry, lets play some of this. I got some sound for you. Yeah, go ahead. Was that a Confederate Flag you were just in front of . You know what, let me telyou yes or no . You want to condemn you cant even answer the question. Larry, the guys from minnesota, what does he know about a Confederate Flag . But go on. Thats always puzzled me about Corey Stewart how a guy from minnesoould have gotten so wrapped up with robert e. Lee. Usually theyre not too devoted. Listen, he had a major role last summer. In chatesville. Corey stewart was here a number of times before that awful unite the right, neonazi supremacist disaster. He was encouraging them. And he still does. Nothings changed, but, don, hes not going to be elected. Hes going to lose to ktim cane right . Yes. He won a nomination because 300,000 people turned out. 300,000 people to vote for this guy is a racist and a bigot. How do these bigots keep Winning Office . Thats what i dont understand. Well, primaries. He got about 45 , 46 of the vote. Why did they do it . Because the activist, the extreme activists are the ones that come to the primaries and vote in the Republican Party in this state and i think around the country the party has moved way to the right following trump, using trump as the symbol of the dear leader, of the supreme leader, the cult leader, whatever you want to call him and Corey Stewart is right out of that mold. Disgusting. It really is gross. Lets go to South Carolina. I want to talk about lee bright. Hes best known for sponsoring that transgender bathroom bill and he calls transgender people mentally ill. Hes in the running to replace trey gowdy in South Carolina. Is he another example of the old party versus trump in the gop . He was the leader in the first primary. He didnt come anywhere close to 50 . Hes got a runoff in two weeks and hes got a strong opponent so we dont know for sure hes going to be nominated. But, yes, i would say some of his views are ignorant, just to be blunt about it. I have short time left here so lets go quickly to dennis hof one of nevadas wellknown brothel owners or pimp if you want to use that word. Hes now the gop in nevada. How significant is this win . Hes the front runner. Hes considered to be likely to win the seat. Its nevada, don. They have brothels out there. And look there are 63 legislators in nevada. Something tells me that this guy, the only thing hes ever going to do in the legislator, hes going to be assigned the organization of the evening entertainment. Thats probably it. Larry, appreciate your expertise all the time. When we come back were going to ask a man who worked with cory stewart on the Trump Campaign in virginia, what he thinks. About stewarts primary win. Now more businesses, in more places, can afford to dream gig. How many ts are there in gop . Well, some republicans especially those heading for the exits now say the gop is the party of t, meaning trump. I want to bring in joan walsh, amanda carpenter, and John Hendricks who was cochair of the Trump Campaign in virginia. Good evening to john, lets start with you and i want to talk about Corey Stewart. You were both cochairs of the Trump Campaign in virginia. He was fired and you became chair. Is he a bigot . Well, i wouldnt say hes a bigot, but i would say Corey Stewart has spent a lot of time talking about Confederate Flags and hanging around the wrong people and its really tarnished the party. He has zero chance of beating tame cane in november. He survived this primary because two antiCorey Stewart opponents split the vote to get under 50 . And he was able to win because the name i. D. S had three times running for state office and republicans in virginia couldnt find a better viable candidate enough to beat him. John, if he is supporting the Confederate Flag and hanging out with t wrong people, doesnt that kind of make him a bigot . That kind of makes him a bigot. There is evidence there that makes him a bigot. Bigots dont do that. Im not going to speak whats in his heart. I hate it when people say that, john. I dont know whats in anybodys heart. All i know is the evidence people show me, what they sahey. I dont know whain my own mothers heart. Im not a heart reader. People show you who they are. You should believe them. It walks like a racist bigot, it talks like a racist bigot. It promotes racist bigot things like the Confederate Flag and hangs out with racist people, what does that mean . It means theyre a bigot. It also means trump fired him in october of 2016. He got fired. But trump endorsed him. He just endorsed him, john. Hes his candidate. He endorsed him because hes a republican candidate but he also fired him. Cory gardener of colorado, hes not endorsing him. There are some republicans that ardorsing him. This is another test for the nd people nemanda knows what im to draw a line. Hes from minnesota. My virginia prive native friends are like this dude, this bigot is from minnesota. Where did he come up with the Confederate Flag . Its not from granddaddy. Its from bigotry. Hes going to drive virginia to be a blue state. Its purple right now but its going blue. Hes accelerating it. And a lot of republicans are going to need to stand up and say were sorry this happened. Thats why i give up this election. John, i thought your answer was pretty good until you said you didnt know if he was a bigot. I think to joans point, people need to be more emphatic about it and call it out instead of saying tknow whats in someones heart. I thought your answer was pretty good, but why dont you just call it what it is . Go ahead, amanda. I wh Corey Stewart in his interview earlier tonight on cnn was forced to talk about what happened in charlottesville more. He had a connection to those people who marched those grounds. D those g devastating images, and to think that happened so close to a Beautiful College campus and people marching around with torches, flames, impersonating nazis, i mean this is really devastating stuff. And i think everyone can imagine that happening where they lived and Corey Stewart had a connection to that group. Want him to explain why he is friends with those people. And theres an argument for keeping the Confederate Flag in historical context, but listen i go all around rural west virginia, maryland, and virginia. When i see some boys driving around with a Confederate Flag on the back of their pickup truck screaming through town its not because they are paying honor to confederate soldiers who fought. Its never a good thing. And so seeing how the Confederate Flag gets displayed in those areas that has no connection to the civil war, you know, Corey Stewart has been around that crowd and hes going to have to answer for it. If tim cane is smart. If his campaign is smart, hes going to make that race a referendum on and tim kaine is smart. Corey stewart came out and actually attacked the republicans who came down on the right side of charlottesville, not the president. He didnt come out on the right side. He called any republican who criticized what happened in charlottesville, he called them weak. He went that far as to criticize republicans who stood up. Indefi and i appreciate john is not defending him. Look, you cant defend him, amanda. But the other thing is hes unelectable. I mean hes going get defeated by tim kaine. He got some votes though, john. So its kind of a waste of time. He cant win. Hes going to get outspent 50 to 1. He has no money. Tim kaine has a million dollars. And he only hung on by 1 . If the election was another week nick would have beat him in virginia. You sait win. When was the last time you heard that . Hes not going to win in virginia. Tim kaine, im just saying we heard that before. Im telling you trump was going to win, and im telling you stewart is not going to win. S going to push him over the line. He learned i guess a lesson in being amp critic, right . So heres the president today. Watch this. Oh, this is corker . So lets go to corker then. This is bob corker today and his criticism of donald trump. Watch this. Were in a strange place. I s almost been a its becoming a cultish thing, isnt it . And its not a good place for any party to end up with a cultlike situation as it relates to to a president that happens to be of purportedly of tame parties. Well, its kind of similar, john, as to what mark samford said. He disagreed, he criticized, he lost. Now corker is saying theres sort of a kiss the ring from republicans that they need to do or else or theyre out. Its the party of trump. And its not a moment too soon. Because republican politics and agenda of st has failed the country miserably. That was the pf bank money, lower wages and open borders. Thats your fathers Republican Party before trump. If it hadnt been for trump and his America First agenda Hillary Clinton would be president today and the Republican Party would be on its way to extinction. What President Trump brought to the table is a new set of policies and lot of people in Goldman Sachs in his administration. Tax cuts for the rich and n sachs and the banks. Well, the tax cuts are working. You really cant argue r not for the working people. Its all going to the wealthy. Its not going to the wealthy. When people have jobs, thats everybody. We have today more job openings than we have people to fill the job. We have people that are coming into the job market today that havent went in since 2008 during the recession. Ges are up 2. 8 . Theyre barely moving. I mean, youre making this stuff up. Thy is bming under trumps policies. Thank you, barack obama. He started us on the trajectory and donald trump came along. But why did donald trump have to bring okay, you say he brings populism, heelping the working class. Why did he have to bring so much bigotry . Why did he have to come out and endorse Corey Stewart today . Look, i wouldnt have done he already fired Corey Stewart one time but he did endorse him, john. Quick amanda, youre going to have the last word. This is why donald trump is accused of leading a cult. Theres no general principles you can cling to. Youre forced to go along with the whims of trump. He has a clear agenda and y rese to recognize its rking. Thank you, guys. Last word. Well be right back. Oh, look. President trump back in washington tonight making a lot of big claims about his singapore summit with kim jongun, including thanorth korea is no longer a nuclear threat. Lets discuss now, Mark Mckinnon former advisor to george w. Bush. And also tom nichols a professor and at Harvard Extension School and an author of the death of expertise. Two nights into a row. Republicans including you were so critical of president obamas Foreign Policy. But now youve got an oped out in the washington post. You said republicans were aens and obvious regard but trump has shown himself to be beyond any of the gops worst nightmares about obama. Trump is unwilling to be briefed and incapable of being educated and how now blundered into a summit with a monster. Obvious question, tom, why the hypocrisy . Well, you know i think senator corker summed it up nicely when he said this is becoming cultish. Look, republicans have legitimate concerns about barack obama, that he was experienced, he had selfregard, that he knew what he was doing without a lot of background in things like Foreign Policy. The problem is President Trump is obama on steroids. And i think one major difference is whatever you thought of president obamas Foreign Policy you assume that president obama was an intelligent guy, he was listening to intelligent advisers, theres no discussion about it. And President Trump is poblank, im not getting briefed, im going to wing it and republicans dont say a word. I think in part because theyve doubled down so many times they just dont know how to cli do. Theres nowhere to go down because theyve defended him to hilt. And every time they thought it was as as it could get, it got worse. Thont know where to go now. I asked a question today as i was giving a discussion and i d the same answer. Basically i said it was cognizant distance because where do you go after youve someone for so long and they negaterything you say about them. What do you do . When do yotake the exit lane . I dont think you can anymore. Especially if you invested so much of yourself. If you say youre wrong at this point then everything youve been arguing for years pretty much comes apart in front of your eyes. Thats why they dont do it. There you go. Youre a smart man. And donald trump has less political experience, by the way, than president obama. And you said he was obama on steroids. Mark, i want you to take a look at this. This is tweet by the gop chairman. And she says complacency is our enemy. Anyone who does embrace the make donald trump agenda of making America Great again will be making a mistake. To me its become more about idolatry than ideology. Its all about trump winning. Listen, its true that any president becomes the party, becomes the face of the party, becomes the image of the party, becomes the ideology of the party. Except in this case its unclear other than an America First agenda exactly what that ideology is. Winning and hes exercising his power. Heres an interesting number. Donald trump is enjoying the strongest inparty support than any president in history at this juncture 500 days in except for george w. Bush, which was after 9 11. Its become a party of high deficits, a party attacking our allies and kissing up to authoritarian dictators. When you asked me about north korea yesterday i said it was a win. Its a win for it day or a win for the week. But the problem with trump is he just punches whats in front of him. Theres no longterm thinking about, for example, the verification on this. And it really struck me today to see mike pompeo, secretary of state pompeo now. And his reaction to the statement that had no verification. And he got very defensive, which is very unlike him. Im, frankly, insulted you would ask me that question. Of course, theres a problem. Thats a question everyone should be asking. So for him to come on like that made me think theres some issues there. I want to play it. The agreement that was signed made very clear this would mean complete denuclearization. The sequence would be different this time. Thats important. Itstral to the understanding. You suggested there was some risk that the clock would run out and they would delay. We believe that chairman kim jongun understands the urgency of completing the timing of this denuclearization, he understands we must do this quickly. And these sanctions really, we should recall these are u. N. Sanctions, the sanctions cannot take place at such time until we have demonstrated north korea has denuclearized. Complete denuclearization certainly encompasses that idea ve clearly. So thats what he said tonight, gentlemen, after that initial statement. What do you make of that . I have a short time. Tom first. Well, i think one of things youre seeing with all of this is that republicans even though theyre majority, they control all the branches of the government, most of the statehouses, they still think of themsesomeof beleaguered insurgency, which makes them terrified of ever admitting a mistake or allowing any weakness or allowing any at all. They still think of themselves as this put upon perpetual victims. Yeah, they have a complete victim mentality. But it keeps them from ever admitting a mistake. Mark, quick, ten seconds, please. Ill give you the last word. Ill just echo that it reaffirms the wis the most important thing. Everything else was vague of the details. Harken back to reagan, we need the verify part, we got the trust part. Lets get the verification down. Thank you, gentlemen. Well be right back. I want to bring in now legendry investigative journalist seymour hurst. Ad youre here this evening. Glad to be here. The president complains about news organizations that challenge him. Todayeet it was dife cited news organizations as the countrys biggest enemy. Whats your tion to that . Well, theresbeen tension with every pdent. I sometimes think that we underestimate trump but thats my opinion. I always like to tack the other way, i guess. But it seems to me the news media, i always view disliking tris likcatnip for american audiences, it seems television is doing much better, im going to put my ear piece in better, the new york papers and more audience and going after trump is really good news and i sometimes think that i just wish sometimes in stead of so much about trump and how awful he is and theres certainly a lot of things not to likeut him, i wish wed talk more about whats going on in yemen, aboothers having their children taken away at the border and all that. I wish that was more of a focus. I understand trump is great for ratings. He just is. Thats just the reality. President s have always complained about the press this to this extent. Snt been we do talk about those issues. This president s administration, as you said, theres not lots to like. Thats not for me to decide as a journalist. But theres lots of even policywise that are just sort of out there. Those things deserve to be talked about as well. Its not just about ratings. And im a contrarian. The problem is hes going up in the ratings. The more we cplain about him. Nobody likes his cabinet, whats going on in the cabinet and the various divisions of the government, the mistreatment of people, the federal workers is outrageous. On the other hand, hes going up in ratings. And so i dont see the Democratic Party doing anything but basically running sort of as hillary did, running against him for the last two months against him of the campa im not sure if im not in the major city in america, im not sure this guy is different. And i think people are tired of politicians and he appeals for a lot of reasons that ma dont all understand, i certainly dont understand him. Hes got 48 , 47 of the people. He appeals to them. Theres something about him. This is a guy that took down 13 republicans with a hry of more than 200 years of political life. 200 years of seymour, i get what youre saying. Correct me if im wrong. It sounds like youre conflating the Democratic Party with news media. Its not the news medias job to say were going to help him go up in the polls, its our job to analyze his policies and behavior. Its our job. With all due respect, im not talking about you or your show. No, im talking about the news in general. We have a public right now, there was a time when the media was trusted. Those days are long gone. When i worked at the New York Times. It was trusted. We now have a situation where a lot of people tune in to what they like and dont listen to what they dont like. Right. Its good for cable tem vision on both sides, for fox news and cnn and msnbc and you guys. Youve got great ratings, youre making money. The New York Times every quarter says its picked up another 200,00bsiptions becausen trump. If you dont like trump, go here. If you like trump, you go somewhere else. Where is the middle ground where whatever they say will have some standing, its not going to be tunet by 40 of the people, whatever percentage. It just seems to me that at this rate, if im watching, yes, trump went to the summit not knowing much about it and, yes, he doesnt read anything and i used to watch his golf show. Hes famous for hes been in public life for 15, 20 years. Longer. Well, yeah, m since the 80s, right . An outside chance with all the tweets and other stuff, he just may have some idea what hes doing. Hes keeping it sed on him, good, baor otherwise, it keeps it on him. I dont know if were caught up maybe h doing better at running. He did get rid of the bushes and he got rid of the clintons for us. Sayihinks and what youre omeone attacks institutions, we cant normalize lying, we cant normalize bigotry. Thats jabout. We cant report on things that are favorable that the American People just want to hear all th. Im talking about all news media. Because then derelict in our duties. Maybe its different for you as a writer and author but as a journalist, i think most journalists i know we would take lower ratings and less money if this president actually believed in facts and reality. Im gog to have to disagree with you on that part of it. Hey, of course. I have to get you to tell us about the ok, though. Let me say one more point. The last thing i expect to you do is agree with me. M just giving you a point of view. Im thinking about whats he going to do after the next election. Ied he just may be playing a longer game than we think. Of urse he is. We know that. Were playing his game. Thats what bothers me. I got to talk to about your book, reporter. Absolutely. Tell bus it. What can you say . Ive been a reporter for 50 years. I started as a Police Reporter in chicago. I got famous i guess very early doing the massacre story and i was i guess the lone ranger. Some reviewer called me the lone wolf. But i went after a story that most of the major media did not go after. I worked at the the New York Times for many yeard one of the problems i had, i loved its a love hate, respect langer anger relationship. There was an enormous amount of respect for presidency. Even nixon, it was very hard to cut through in the early days of watergate. We talked so long and went back and forth. Im just going to tell everybody to buy your book. If you have the opportunity to come back to talk more about your book, would you please take it . Because i want everybody to go out and buy reporter. Im up against the clock. At this point i think its more important to say what i say than worry about the book. Thank you, seymour. Heres a preview of a special series cnn is running all next week.
