The first person to have their reputation completely destroyed worldwide via the internet. I will ask frank bruni of the New York Times if it happened today would it have been such a big scandal or would it have made her a star . Also, a suspected serial killer in indiana captured. Seven women dead. Are there more . Weve got a lot to get to tonight but first were going to begin with some breaking news. Designer Oscar De La Renta, the dean of new york fashion and the man who designed dresses for just about every modernday first lady and who recently designed Amal Clooneys wedding dress, has died at the age of 82. Were going to have more coming up on his death. But i want to begin with the family of the nurse who is battling ebola at Emory University hospital in atlanta tonight. Joining me now via skype, nurse amber vincents mother deborah berry. How are you doing, deborah . Ive had better days. But thanks for asking. I can only imagine how difficult it is not to be with your daughter, not to be by her side. After all these days. How is she doing . Shes doing okay. Just trying to get stronger every day. What are your conversations with her like . Are you able to speak with her for a long time . Does that help . We try not to talk to her too long because it is tiring and, again, being laboring with the illness, she tries to pace herself. And because she is a true caregiver shes trying to be an example and give care to herself. She always cautions us that when youre in the hospital youre there to rest and do what the doctors tell you to do. So shes trying to be a good example. Thats a good way to lead to the next question. Being a good example. Because she was she was contacted by someone, a Health Representative who got in touch with the cdc asking if she should fly or not. Whats behind that story . Was she given the okay to fly . She initially requested permission to travel home because just as the way that amber is. To make sure its okay that i go. Her team was under a lot of anxiety because they had just lost a patient. And she had come in to give assistance and she was actually off. After that shift she told them again she was leaving and she wanted to make sure that it was okay to travel. Not only to be of assistance but just to make sure it was okay. She spoke with an assistant manager, who then reported back to her it was okay to travel. So she got the okay. Speaking to you and other family members, you said shes always trying to help people. If she thought that she may be emblematic or contagious, she would not have put other peoples lives at risk, would she . She would not have placed her life at risk, first of all. Just, again, being a caregiver. Because part of what she needs to do is be healthy so she can help others. And youre right. Also to not affect anyone negatively. And then being her mom, amber would never do anything to negatively impact me. My daughter and i are extreme l close. The thing we like least to do is disappoint or hurt one another in any way. She just thats not her character. Has she told you exactly how she thinks she contracted ebola . Was there a particular lapse or a moment that she remembers . I mean, weve heard a lot from the nurses about inadequate protective gear, and so on. I heard a conversation that she had explaining in detail how she theres a term theyve been using i dont recall. But basically the way they robe and disrobe. And it was extremely thorough. And they told her she did all of the right things. So i have no idea how that happened. Miss berry, can you explain to us and clear up about exactly when she started to feel that ill because she went home to visit you and to plan her wedding that weekend and when exactly did she start to feel sick . Because there are some discrepancies there. Absolutely. She departed to go home back to dallas one monday afternoon. And she was fine. She caught me Tuesday Morning and told me that she was dragging herself to the hospital because her temperature was the highest it had ever been. And thats when she sounded like she was extremely concerned, of course, but she assured me that she was going directly to the hospital. That she was driving alone. And these are things that had been explained in detail to her to do if her symptoms were to manifest. So she didnt start to exhibit until she got back home. So you dont feel you were at risk or family members or anywhere she went when she was in ohio that people were at risk . Or the people on the airplane. No, sir. She was fine. And one of the things that we do when were together, because we both work so much, basically, we have slumber parties. And we sleep. We eat and we watch tv and we talk and usually fall asleep talking because the time that we are together we just share so much. And thats what we do to even relax. You know. So youre saying she didnt go out in public a lot. Is that what youre saying, trying to tell me . She didnt. I just want to get this clear. Did she call the cdc or did a representative from dallas, from the Health Agency in dallas call the cdc . The protocols that were in place was she was to call a team member of the Dallas County health department. And they did the reporting to the cdc. Okay. Great. Thank you for clearing that up for us. Now, youre at an undisclosed location in dallas with your future soninlaw. And i know you both want to be in atlanta to be closer to amber. Are you cleared to fly on a commercial plane . What have you heard from Health Officials about that . I have not been cleared to fly on a commercial plane, and were waiting to hear what we can do to get to my daughter. Someone asked me earlier what i would do to get to her, and i told them that i had good walking shoes. If that were an option, id take it. If you could walk there, you would do it but they wont let you go. They wont let us go. Hows your future soninlaw doing . Has he shown any signs or symptoms or does he have a temperature or anything . Absolutely not. Hows he holding up . If i had to pick someone to be my soninlaw, i would pick him. Hes been wonderful. Also, i know that you started a go fund me fund for amber and folks who want to help can go to www. Gofundme. Com foramber. How are you going to use the proceeds . Well, a family friend actually requested permission to do that. And were just appreciative that people want to pour out any just love and support for my daughter. I dont have any determination of how shell need to use the funds because first of all we didnt solicit them. But people are eager to support support her and, you know, help in any way possible. And as, you know, we go through her recovery, well see how she best needs to use those funds and well do the absolutely appropriate thing with those. We appreciate you speaking to us first. And since you had the attention of such a wide audience, is there anything you would like people to know about your daughter . Anything youd like to say to the cdc . The dallas Hospital Health workers, the government. Even the president. Go ahead. I just thank everyone who has said a prayer for amber, who has supported my family and my daughter in this time, and i thank every agency, every county worker, every person who has put forth the effort to make changes so that no one else has to sate where im sitting. Separated from a sick child. I thank you all. And i just look forward to the day where the tears that i fight back i dont have to fight because theyll be happy tears. Debra berry, the mother of amber vinson, thank you. Best of luck to you. Please keep us informed about your daughters condition. Thank you, sir. I want to bring in amber vinsons pastor at Shoreline Church. Pastor mcclellan, we appreciate you joining us. We just heard from ambers mother debra. And youre helping to plan amber and her fiance dereks wedding. Tell us what theyre like. Derek and amber are two beautiful people. If you ever have the opportunity to meet derek, you might be a little intimidated when you first meet him. He is a huge human being. Played college football. Played some time in the nfl, if i remember correctly. And just a huge guy. But has such a kind and gentle heart. But him with amber, they make a beautiful couple for sure. All the interactions ive been able to have with them honestly, it always lifts my heart because, again, hes such a huge guy and amber being so sweet and kind, shes almost like a wallflower but still has a lot of fight and a lot of love in her heart. Youve been counseling them, and youve been speaking to them throughout this process. I wonder how scared he was for his health. The mom said hes doing fine now. It still has not been 21 days, but so far hes fine. What kind of contact did he have with her . Hes doing very, very well. As you heard ambers mom mention, he was incredibly scared. Not just really for himself but obviously for his bridetobe. Right. And amber actually reached out to you after she game symptomatic. How did she feel in the moment . Im sure she was scared. You know, for amber and derek, her fiance, for them they did have some fear, which is natural. But also for them to put their trust and their hope in god. We prayed together. My wife was there on the phone as well, and we prayed and just trusted god to give them all peace. We didnt know obviously things would unfold the way they have, but were so incredibly thankful for the community thats been around her, her family that stood by her side. And honestly, amber is such a woman of strength and courage. Its been a joy and an honor to watch her walk through this with such grace. Pastor Earl Mcclellan of Shoreline Baptist Church in dallas. Of Shoreline Church in dallas. Thank you. Thank you, sir. And when we come right back, remember this . Again, i want to thank you all and brownie, youre doing a heck of a job. The cdc is out with updated guidelines to better protect Health Care Workers from contracting ebola. The agency came under fire after two nurses who treated an ebola patient in dallas contracted the virus. Meanwhile, some people are calling for the cdcs director, dr. Thomas frieden, to step down. Michael brown is one of those people. He was forced to step aside as director of fema after Hurricane Katrina battered the gulf coast. Michael brown joins me now. Lets get this right off the top. Many people might say the irony in Michael Brown, i mean, the nerve of him to criticize, you know, the fema the director when he didnt do a great job during katrina. Do you understand that criticism . Oh, absolutely. Been there, done that. But who better to speak to the systemic problems that we have inside the government when we see these kinds of issues arise, don . And i think what really kind of bothers me is this inability or unwillingness of the public or for that matter elected officials to have an objective conversation about why do we have these problems . Why do we continue to have the problems . And things like we already have after congress created the department of homeland security, enacted by oshield, gave both administrations, the Bush Administration and the Obama Administration billions of dollars to prepare for these kinds of things, created an assistant secretary of health and Human Services to respond to these things, why do we still have these issues . Thats the discussion i think we ought to have. And if i can get people to engage in that discussion, the countrys better off. All right. Lets continue on in this direction. I want you to listen to this. And then well discuss. Again, i want to thank you all for and brownie, youre doing a heck of a job. Its not that they havent been doing an outstanding job really working hard on this issue. So many people have been comparing, you know, these two moments. Is it fair, considering so many people died during katrina but only one person has died of ebola here in the United States . Well, no. Because any single death is tragic. And one thing that i think people should stop doing is comparing one disaster to another. Because every disaster if the disaster is in your yard, the disaster is your house, then thats catastrophic. What they ought to be focusing on instead is why do these similarities continue to occur where we create these massive bureaucracies and then the bureaucracies are for whatever reason i have theories about that but why are they inherently incapable of being as efficient and as effective as we want them to be . Do you think that an ebola czar is a step in the right direction from the administration . No. In fact, i think its you can certainly draw a similarity there because the appointment of a czar think about it this way, don. In Crisis Management 101 the first question that a reporter should ask, a citizen should ask, is whos in charge . So now we have the cdc director, we have the n. I. H. Director, we have the assistant secretary for response, we have the secretary of health and Human Services, and now were going to pile on top of all of that a czar. What Statutory Authority does he have . Whats he supposed to do . And does he have two things. Does he have Decisionmaking Authority . Two, if the people i just outlined are making decisions, is their decisionmaking then slowed down because they have to go get approval from a czar before they go back . Its the same thing that happened when congress and bush created homeland security. You put bureaucracy on top of bureaucracy and at the end of the day everybodys asking whos in charge . But do you think heads should roll over this . I excuse me. Ill ask you the question again. Do you think heads should roll over this . You know, thats a decision that every president has to make. Heres the decision i think the people that are active now, whether its, you know, dr. Frieden, dr. Fauci, the secretary of hhs, or anybody, is can i still be effective if the media, congress, and everybody else is so focused on me as opposed to what im trying to do . And i can say from having been there, done that, when that happens and you cross that rubicon, then its incumbent upon that individual to say im too much of the issue, i should step aside. I think thats what youre saying about Thomas Frieden when i meant in one of my earlier questions youve been saying Thomas Frieden should step down. Im wondering if there should be heads beyond fried whoen you believe should step down. But i think youve answered that. The pentagon has now 0rded a 30person medical team be put on standby to quickly assist the cdc on Ebola Response anywhere in the u. S. How do you feel about the military involvement in this . The military just from my previous briefings, my previous reading into certain programs, theyve got great capabilities. Theyve got great ability. And if they will put some military planners in with some of these Response Teams itll be very helpful. I think they have to be very careful, though, from the political point of view if they become actively engaged in the interaction with the public because then that raises issues of posse comitatis and what is the military doing on the ground. Jesse matthew, the suspects in the disappearance of missing university of virginia student hannah graham, was indicted in a 2005 Sexual Assault also in virginia. The charges include abduction and attempted murder. Investigators tonight are trying to determine whether a skull and bones discovered behind an abandoned Virginia Home over the weekend are the remains of graham. Meanwhile there may be a serial killer in indiana. Darren vann is in custody tonight suspected in seven murders, some of which could date back 20 years. Joibing me now is Karen Freeman wilson the mayor of indiana and chief larry mckinley, gary, indianas chief of police. My goodness, you guys have a lot on your hands. A lot to deal with. Meredith, you first. Six of the victims were found in a fivemile stretch in your city of gary. What can you tell us about this investigation tonight . Well, first and foremost, our heart goes out to the families of anneth jones and the victim Afrikka Hardy from hammond. We can tell you that charges were filed on the case in hammond, indiana. That was the victim was Afrikka Hardy. We can also tell you that the investigation is ongoing and the good news is that the Gary Police Department as well as the gary fire department, the hammond Police Department and the Lake County Sheriffs Department and the Prosecutors Office are all working together to follow up every lead on this case. Lets talk to the gentleman silting next to you. The chief there. The bodies were found, chief, in abandoned homes. And tonight are your officers going house to house to search for more victims . Well, weve escalated our process. So weve been searching abandoned buildings for the past year and a half. But weve added a component to what we call our five by five by five cleanup area where we go throughout different neighborhoods and we actually do cleanups. Whether its demolition or clearing debris from different areas throughout the city. So were going to escalate those processes. Do you think your office is going to find more bodies . Well, its still under investigation right now. Theyre taking statements statements from mr. Vann. And we are actively investigating the situation at this point. There were missing person reports from some of these victims, correct . Yes, there were. Okay. We were actively investigating this report from mr. Jones. As a matter of fact, the officers were out locating and look through the area when they were actively contacted by the hammond Police Department in regards to the actions of mr. Vann. Did he say something, i screwed up this time with the last one and he believes thats why you caught him . Correct. At this point im not sure if its because he just got caught or he screwed up. But at this point he is in custody, and were glad of that. Especially for our citizens. Absolutely. Mayor, do you know why vann cooperated with police in hammond . And is he still cooperating . We certainly dont have any idea of what motivated his actions even before being captured and since that time. You know, its hard to get into the mindset of someone who clearly seems to be a psychopath. The question, though, is we know he was a convicted sex offender. Was he on a watch list of any kind . On the departments raidar . Either of you can answer that. Excuse me. Well, he was actually on the registry list. Our Lake County Sheriffs Department has a unit that actively goes out and they monitor the sex offenders. And mr. Vann was monitored in september and everything checked out fine with him. Do you expect this to grow into other states in the area, mayor . We certainly dont know at this time. But one of the things its important to remember, don, is that even though he checked out in september most folks dont go around committing crimes and then radaring you when they do it. They do it, as he did, he had concealed what he had done. And even in hammond he left the scene. He had concealed that. And it was simply some of the Electronic Devices that allowed the Hammond Police to get a lead on him and ultimately find him here in the city of gary. Well, they said it could go back 20 years, mayor. Do you know anything about that . At this juncture we do not. We have recovered six bodies. Only one of them from gary has been identified. We are working very closely with the lake county coroner and anxiously awaiting the identity of the other individuals because we want to bring their families that information and certainly want them to have a degree of closure. And chief, what does this mean for cold cases in your area . Well, what this means for cold cases, were going to still be actively seeking out those cold cases. Weve expedited some of those cold cases. And i will be actually putting more officers on those cold cases. Mayor freemanwilson and police chief mckinley, thank you very much for your time. Thank you so much. Thank you. When we come right back, Monica Lewinsky is back in the public spotlight way mission to battle a growing problem in america and reinvent herself. Will it work . She says her new goal is to put an end to cyber bullying. And we got the story tonight from cnns martin savidge. If i seem nervous, forgive me. Because i am. And a little emotional. Reporter it is surprising to hear a woman famous for intimate sexual acts with the president , sounding shy. But there was no mistaking who she is. My name is Monica Lewinsky. Reporter the once 22yearold white house intern is now 41 and launching a mission to combat online bullying. I want to put my suffering to good use and give purpose to my past. Reporter it was her 1995 affair with president bill clinton that made her, as she put it, patient zero when it came to cyber harassment. Long before facebook or twitter. But there were gossip news and entertainment websites replete with comment sections and emails could be forwarded. Of course, it was all done on the excruciatingly slow dialup. Yet around the world this story went. A viral phenomenon that you could argue was the first moment of truly social media. Reporter at times lewinsky got emotional. Staring at the computer screen, i spent the day shouting, oh, my god and i cant believe they put that in or thats so out of context. And those were the only thoughts that interrupted a relentless mantra in my head. I want to die. Reporter instead it was the death in 2010 of tyler clemente, she says, prompted her new life. The rutgers freshman killed himself after his roommate used a webcam to stream an intimate encounter online. Clementes story deeply hurt lewinskys mother, and monica understood why. She might very easily have lost me. When i too might have been humiliated to death. Reporter lewinsky also used the speech to give her take on the affair that made her a household name. 16 years ago, fresh out of college, a 22yearold intern in the white house, and more than averagely romantic, i fell in love with my boss. In a 22yearold sort of way. It happens. But my boss was the president of the United States. That probably happens less often. Now, i deeply regret it for many reasons, not the least of which is because people were hurt, and thats never okay. Reporter after nearly a decade of selfimposed seclusion a strongsounding Monica Lewinsky appears to be launching a comeback, taking on a cause she knows only too well. Having survived myself, what i want to do now is help other victims of the shame game survive too. Reporter monitor savidge, cnn. Lets talk about Monica Lewinsky now with New York Times columnist frank bruni. Youre listening and watching intently. What did you make of that . I mean, its fascinating to see her after all these years. I felt an enormous amount of sadness for how much of her life shes lost for a mistake she made as a 22yearold. I think its important for us to remember she was 22 when this all happened. Some of what shes saying is a little bit jarring. I fell in love with my boss. I dont think most of us remember this as a love affair gone sour. I think she is if not rewriting history putting a slightly different spin on it. But mostly im struck by just sadness at all that shes lost. And in particular this has been in the news a little bit but it wasnt played in that stretch. She during part of her speech, she let loose with a string of words that are used to describe a, quote unquote, loose woman. I cant remember them, but i was reminded i wrote a column not long ago in which i laid out all those words and made the point we dont have those words for a man. One of the things i think would be interesting to discuss in terms of monica isnt so much cyberbullying as the double standard we have for the way we talk about and treat women whom we deem sexually promiscuous versus men. Having said all, that then, she knows what its like to be humiliated and having those words used against her. And you said we dont use these words against men. Is this a good cause for her to take up . Cyberbullying . Yes. Its a perfectly good cause. Its a little odd because what happened to her wasnt what we think of as cyberbullying. There was no twitter, no facebook no. And cyberbullying is what happens to your friends among a school setting. Was she bullied by the mooe media . But thats not about cyberbullying. Thats about press coverage. And i wouldnt say she was bullied. She went through the media grinder in a way very few people have been. Do you think if there was social media then or lets just say it happened now when there is social media, and tmz and all those sites. Do you think radaronline, do you think it would be different for her now . Might it just be a story that lasts for a week, a two, a month and then its gone . I think and this was a 22yearold and the president of the United States and it led to his impeachment and stuff like that. I think this would have gone on quite a while. Might have burned itself out a little faster because of the attention. I think it would have been even uglier in some ways. And we saw that today. She got on twitter today, and i dont know if you saw this but people tweeted back. Today was her inauguration into twitter and i think she said hashtag here we go. Twitter is brutal. Here we went. And people are and again, it struck me by just how many of the tweets back to her were about sexual promiscuity and were questions and cat calls along those lines. And i just i cant say strongly enough, we have to think about the sexism and the way we talk about women versus men when these scandals come along. She talked about tyler clementi, the Rutgers University student who jumped off the bridge after his roommate filmed him in a compromising moment with another student. Do you think that that was why do you think that resonated with her so much . I dont know that it did. I think shes made a decision to do this campaign and shes come up with a narrative. Im sure she noticed it like a lot of us did. Im sure she was saddened by it like a lot of us well, shes coming up with a version that tees up her cause in the best way. Okay. Can we move on now . Please. Lets talk about ebola. Its an interesting transition. Okay. Lets talk about ebola because heres what you said in your column just a few days ago. You said im not dismissing the horror of ebola, a fullblown crisis in africa that should command the whole worlds assistance. And ebola in the United States certainly warrants concern. Were still searching for definitive answers about transmission and prevention. But americans already have such answers about a host of other greater perils to our health and wed be wiser to reacquaint ourselves with those and recommit to heeding them than to worry about our own imminent exposure to ebola. Right. I was trying to push back at some of the panic that were seeing. People who are all freaked out about being exposed to ebola themselves and what that could mean. We dont yet know that that is going to be an issue for all but a very small number of people. And i was making the point that theres all sorts of things we know everything about. You know, we know what good immunizations do. And yet we have a rising tide of people in this country who are resisting them. We know to wear sunscreen and stay out of the sun lest we get skin cancer. We ignore that. So i was just using that moment to say we have answers to a lot of things, we dont have answers to this one, but why dont we take the answers we have and deploy those and not get freaked out . According to the cdc, about 20,000 people a year die from complications from the flu in the u. S. Correct. And sometimes a lot more than that. Theres been one death due to ebola. And 45 of americans only who could have gotten one got a flu vaccine in the last do you think theres an overreaction . People rochb and not often. People are pretty much always they fear the unknown more than the known. Right. Thats exactly whats going on. But because we dont know what to do in that one case, why dont if were really interested in the Bigger Picture of protecting ourselves and behaving responsibly and being protected from the things that could hurt us, why dont we use the knowledge we have on those issues and diseases we do . Do you think its equivalent to the panic people had in the 80s and 90s about aids . Its reminiscent to that, sure. Its very reminiscent. Because there again, people didnt have all the knowledge and answers they came to have later on. Do you think the media is pushing this i think were overcovering it to a certain degree but i think now a lot of the coverage has moved in the direction it should, which is looking at how institutions have reacted and whether weve seen the competence that we need to see from our government and from our federal officials. But one has to wonder, if the cdc is coming up with new guidelines, what in the heck is going on. Thats alarming in and of itself. Thats a story the media is more and more covering. Why are we getting new guidelines when this was raging for months and we knew it was going to come here, it was a matter of hans. Thank you very much. I have a cold and what we know is we should do that instead of shaking your hand. Thanks for protecting me. Frank bruni from the New York Times. When we come back tonight, breaking news. He was well known for dressing first ladies from Jackie Kennedy to first Lady Michelle obama, who first wore one of his dresses just over a week ago. And of course he was the man behind the spectacular wedding gown of amal clooney at her wedding to George Clooney just last month. Joining me now on the phone is christa smith, cnn entertainment commentator. And here with me in new york in the studio is eric wilson, fashion news director of in style magazine. So eric, why is he such an important fashion icon . Well, i think Oscar De La Renta was the ultimate diplomat for American Fashion. He was among the generation of designers in postwar america who really came out from the back rooms and put their own names on the label. He first worked for elizabeth arden, im sure you know. And bringing a bit of fashion sense to that house. But eventually he made his own name and he brought prestige to america. The story is that he went to the editor of vogue dianafreeland. Yeah. And he said how do i make a name for sniffle she said go to arden. Dior wont promote you because shes beauty. She needed a fashion label to make that brand sing. Thats ha oscar did beautifully, was he brought fashion to a house that wasnt necessarily known for it. But he also put American Fashion on par with european fashion, correct . Absolutely. Before oscar, before bill blass, before Geoffrey Beene and that american generation, we were talking about jeans here, like sportswear, very basic clothes. And people who copied what the parisian couturiers were doing. Oscar was so great actually became the First American designer to run a parisian couture house when he take over belman. Jackie kennedy to most recently amal alamuddin. Miss clooney. Did Oscar De La Renta, was he really relevant over five decades . Was he still relevant even up until this day . Absolutely. Just case in point, he just did the wedding of the year. I mean, the fact that amal chose him to do a custom dress for her wedding to George Clooney that obviously was on everyone saw it. The whole world took part and pored over those pictures, i think, is proof that he was relevant. To erics point what he created first with jackie kenty a kenne all another first ladies. Laura bush, nancy reagan. And in hollywood hes dressed everyone in hollywood. Cameron diaz, sandt rah bullock, nicole kidman, jennifer hudson, it goes on and on. It was kind of like a moment that showed you arrived. You were going to wear Oscar De La Renta to the oscars, to your premiere. He just knew how to dress a woman, and he knew what she wanted. Feminine lines. To me its very synonymous with elegan elegance. De la renta designer jeans back in the 80s if im correct. Certainly. In the 80s everyone was licensing a name for everything from jeans to automobiles. And he was part of that. How did he embrace, krista . Did he embrace the red carpet . Absolutely. You talk about relevance. An entire sex and the city episode was dedicated to an Oscar De La Renta dress. I mean, people you know, they revered this man. And i think he loved the red carpet. And what i loved about him is he dressed all ages. So you have someone like taylor swift for Oscar De La Renta. Oprah wore Oscar De La Renta. I mean, it was crossgenerational. And thats the thing thats really incredible in a lifetime and in the career of fashion to accomplish that. Where, you know, you are so timeless that any generation it holds up. And eric, do you have a favorite gown . I would almost pick Michelle Dockery from i believe the Grammy Awards early this year when she wore that beautiful silver sparkling dress. It was really a modern version of a ball gown. He could really pretty these dresses even up until this year in a fresh way. What happens to the de la renta house now . Well, as we know, peter copping, who was the designer at nina ricci until this season, was recently hired to come and work with oscar. As his handpicked successor in a way. He was going to train under him and work under him for the coming seasons. But i think with in new Development Well expect him to take on a bigger responsibility. And if someone has to take over the de la renta house, krista, what happens . Do they do it in the style of de la renta or do they try to break out on their own and go in their own direction . I doubt that that would happen immediately. Obviously a different designer brings Something Different to it. I dont think that they would veer from the essence of de la renta, which is that classic, iconic, stylish, elegant you he no, his designs. I doubt that it would veer far from that. Yeah. Im having a moment here. Black turtleneck designer in the 80s, who only wore black turtlenecks. Halston. Thats halston. You used to be able to, quite honestly, if you were lucky, find a halston gown or dress somewhere in a vintage store if you were lucky. And then now theyre worth thousands and thousands of dollars. So no one ever talk over the halston house and changed the name. A halston dress is a halston dress is a halston dress, correct . Well, don, i would just say oscar is he was a true gentleman. And he just understood a womans figure and he also understood kind of early on, saying that time in fashion, he understood how a stylish Society Women will want to dress. So he will go down with halston, with the legend of fashion, correct . And hopefully a name that actually survives into the future which i think with oscar could happen. Eric wilson and krista smith. Thank you very much. Appreciate both of you. Thank you, don. Coming up, new information on the shooting of Michael Brown. What will it mean for a possible indictment of officer Darryl Wilson . This is cnn tonight. Im don lemon. Tonight, does this change everything in ferguson . Michael browns blood on a Police Officers uniform and in his car. His blood also on the officers gun. At least one of the teenagers wounds consistent with a struggle. Weve got a live report from ferguson coming up. Plus, on the front lines of the battle against ebola. Stunning video from liberia to show you. But lets get right to the latest in 23ergson. Cnns sara sidner is there for us. Sara, many people might be surprised to hear this, but there are still protests taking place in ferguson. Guilty as hell. In indict, convict. Sara sidner, can you hear me . There were protesters where she is. And shes having trouble hearing me. The fake media are the fake journalists. Get your camera off sara sidner is in cnn. Protesters i think you can hear me now. Sara, for the third time, there are protesters around you now. Whats going on . Leave. You can get your little short when she gets out. Other than that youve got to go. Fake media got to go. Reporter there are people here they also [ yelling ]. All right. Sara, were going to work out the technical problems with your shot and well get back to you. But i want to bring in New York Times reporter michael schmidt. Michael, you wrote this latest article. Its giving the public a first account of what officer wilson says happened on august 9th. What does he say happened . What he says happened is that there was a struggle inside the car between him and Michael Brown. What he says happened is that brown was going for his gun and as part of that struggle he the officer fired his weapon once, striking brown. The struggle continued. He fired again, and then missed brown. And its after that that we really dont have a ton of details how we get from there to the scene in the street where brown is eventually gunned down. But what the officer does tell the story of is the struggle in the car. And how he feared for his life and he was pinned in the vehicle and in the process of doing that he fired the weapon twice. Theres always been everyone has reported that there was a struggle in the car. These are just more details. And also the information about what evidence, what physical evidence they had. Thats the new thing here, correct . Well, yes. Theres a fair amount of blood that was found in the car and on the officer and on his weapon. There was there was blood on his clothes, on the officers clothes that was indicative of this struggle that could have come after that obviously came after brown was hit the first time, and that the blood wasnt splattered. It was blood that got onto him as brown came at him. There was blood on the gun. Its unclear whether that was splatter or how that got there. But there was also an enormous amount throughout the rest of the car that they found. Okay. So listen, because theres been some question about whether the blood found on him, whether it was splatter or not. You said the blood found on him was not splatter . What ive been told about the blood that was on the officers clothes is that it was from the struggle, it was from the struggle after the first time that he was shot. What do you want to know from the authorities . Well, theres an enormous that i want to know. I guess the thing about this information here is that it doesnt answer all the questions. Theres so much that we still dont know. And i guess id really like to know is after that what happened . What happens after you get into the street . Because there are those differing accounts about what brown did. Did brown lunge back toward him, or move back toward him . Or was brown just standing there with his hands in the air . And thats still something that we dont have an answer to and may be something that forensics wont be able to answer either. So you have forensics that back up this struggle in the car and is on the rah dictate browns friend. But it doesnt answer the question of how it ends in the street. There are major differences between Dorian Johnsons account and this account that you report on officer Darren Wilson. Because Dorian Johnson said they tried to run away immediately. And the account that you have says not yet. The accounts go against what the friend says and back up what the officer says because theres all this blood in the car. And how did the blood get in the car if they had run away . So it hurts the testimony of the friend, of johnson. A lot of criticism of authorities there and the lack of transparency. Why not release this information sooner . I think thats a great question. I think if we knew this information some time ago what would that have changed . Well, it doesnt answer the question of how it ends. So maybe it wouldnt have changed a lot. But maybe theres information that they have about how it ends and about what the officer says about how, you know, he saw things happening and why he acted the way that he did. And thats something that we dont know a lot about. I think that Police Departments that are confronted with these really end up in a more, you know communicating much more effectively certainly when they do and when theyre as transparent as possible about whats going on. And here we are several months later getting a few details, not that many but a few in the New York Times and thats not the way that it probably should be. Michael, i want to ask you about this. Again, this is not the New York Times reporting. This is reporting from the st. Louis paper. I think its the post dispatch. If you can comment on this it would be great. If not just let me know. But there was an account very similar to officer Darren Wilson reported last week in that paper from a witness who was supposedly black who testified in front of the grand jury and who backs up the officers account and he says that mike browns hands werent up in the air, they were to his side, and the Police Officer said, you know, dont go any further, stop, stop, stop, and as soon as Michael Brown stepped back onto the pavement that the officer then shot him again, shot at him. Yeah. Id heard wed written a story back when this had happened a few months ago about the differing accounts of witnesses at the scene and how some people had backed up like what this gentleman said, what the officer said. And i know that for federal authorities here in where wash who were looking at this situation, they sent the fbi agents out on the ground there to find out what was going on, to really give the folks here in washington at the Justice Department sort of a better feeling of what was really happening, that when they heard that, that that which initially came from an interview, that they thought that that was a pretty powerful piece of information because it was someone at the scene who didnt seem to have an ax to grind really backing up the officer. And sort of speaking to why the officer may have been motivated to do that, you know, if he was in that instance. So i found that at the time to be very important, but it certainly contradicts what other people at the scene are saying. I just have one quick question for you because i have to go. But i dont know if your sources are commenting on this. I have sources telling me that they believe at this point with the evidence that they have and the testimony in front of the grand jury now that it will be very difficult to convict if not indict this officer. Are your sources commenting on that . Look, i dont know what the grand jury is going to do in missouri. Thats very i dont think anyone knows that but the grand jury. I think a lot of people think that the officers decision to testify was a very powerful one. If he really thought that he had done something wrong, then he wouldnt have gone as far to do that. But in washington the Justice Department officials here have found no evidence so far or very little evidence to support bringing a civil rights case against the officer. Michael schmidt of the New York Times, thank you very much. Thank you. Sorry about the difficulty with sara sidners shot there. The technical difficulties. But as mentioned, sara sidner is in ferguson, and right now she has a story of reaction there to these new details about the shooting of Michael Brown and what all this will mean for the case. Reporter this is the new normal in ferguson. Protests night and day for the past 73 days. Their number one demand justice. And to them that means the indictment and arrest of officer Darren Wilson, who shot and killed unarmed teenager Michael Brown august 9th. Dont shoot. Hands up. Reporter tensions are high again after new details of the investigation were leaked by a federal source to the New York Times, indicating forensic evidence may mean potential civil rights charges are unlikely. U. S. Law enforcement sources told cnn browns blood was found on wilsons gun, inside wilsons patrol car, and on his uniform. What that does is that tends to support any testimony that there was some kind of scuffle in the police car. And if so, that tends to support officer wilsons testimony and his justification for using deadly force. Reporter early on browns friend said there was a scuffle but that wilson was the aggressor. He pulled up beside us. He tried to brush his door open but we were so close to it that it ricocheted off of us and bounced back to him. And i guess that, you know, that got him upset. As he was trying to choke my friend. And he was trying to get away. And the officer then reached out and he grabbed his arm to pull him into the car. Reporter cnn legal analyst Danny Cavallo says the newly revealed forensic evidence only goes so far. Ultimately, that officer will have to come up with justification not for firing his gun the first time but for each and every bullet that came out of his firearm, whether at the car or away from the car. Reporter whatever happens, police tell cnn they are preparing, especially after hearing this time and again from protesters in the streets. If theres not an indictment, excuse my french, all hells going to break loose. Are you worried that theres going to be Serious Violence . Yeah. I mean, again, were absolutely looking at those things. I believe it was five shootings in august. That came during the protests that came out of that. And then also to protect businesses and the property and the citizens who live in the area. Reporter protesters also have plans. Everybody is planning for whatever the grand jury decides. I think certainly there are lots of us that are planning peaceful protests for should it not be indicted. Certainly there are other people that have other ideas at hand. Reporter sara sidner, cnn, ferguson, missouri. Sara, thank you so much. When we come back, smashing pumpki pumpkins. A ride at a New Hampshire pumpkin festival. Head for the cemetery welcome back, everyone. Questions being raised in ferguson tonight over new details of the shooting of Michael Brown. Weve learned that browns blood was found on the uniform and in the car of officer Darren Wilson. But what will that mean for the case . Joining me now, cnn legal analyst mark omara, political commentator marc lamont hill, and political commentator ben forgetson. And i should say reportedly. This is a New York Times report, this isnt cnn reporting. So were going on the New York Times here. Marc, are you surprised, though, that officer Darren Wilson testified before the grand jury . Mark omamara . Yes. Its quite a move. Normally you avoid that like the plague because the one thing a criminal defense has is the right not to testify anywhere and not to be compelled to. So i think the fact that he did testify is pretty compelling and he has to be quite confident in his position and his lawyers have to be pretty confident to allow him to do so. So in your experience, mark omara, how does a grand jury interpret the differences between what officer wilson says happened in the car and what eyewitnesses in particular Dorian Johnson say happened on the street . Well, theyre going to rely more on the forensic evidence than any eyewitness identification. And weve talked about eyewitness identification not being all that credible. It helps. And if it fits in context with the forensic evidence, its great. But when you look at someone like Dorian Johnson, i think even what has just come out recently and some of the other information, i think that he was probably giving an interpretation of the facts that best supported mike brown but maybe doesnt really support the facts that have come out. It needs to be in context. Im just frustrated that once again here we are letting out a snippet, a completely incomplete snippet, and now everyones got to talk about it and try to fit it into a puzzle we dont know the picture of yet. Marc lamont hill, many have said theres a rush to judgment in this case. Maybe it just turns out that officer wilson was innocent. I mean, thats certainly a possibility. Anything is a possibility. But based on what we know so far, based on the witnesses who have come forward, based on the evidence that we know, i dont see anything that would suggest that. Even the idea that there was blood in the car doesnt necessarily suggest that Darren Wilson wasnt the instigator and initiator of the violence. But then this other piece of this is regardless of what happened in the car, regardless of what their tussle was about or the nature of their tussle, the fact of the matter is if once he gets out of the car his hands are in the air and he is surrendering, which is what some witnesses are saying, he cant be shot six times. That question is going to have to be answered. Why was he shot six times with his hands up if that is in fact what happened . Okay, ben, hold your fervor because i see its coming. I just want to get the attorney to respond. Is that true, what he said, mark . We know that they are two separate events, but theyre only separated by a few seconds and what happened to wilson in the car is going to inform how he reacts to brown outside. If in fact a gun was shot in the car and brown had any other aggressive maneuvers, then wilsons got to believe this guys not afraid of me even with a gun. So you have to look at it from wilsons perspective when youre looking at it. Certainly if he had his hands up in what was truly a surrender then he shouldnt have shot him. But we have to take it in context. Ben frgson, go ahead. And we dont know. We should ultimately want the truth here. I think theres a lot of people that want their side and what they believe is to be true when in fact many people were not there to come out in the end because they dont want to admit that maybe, just maybe we have a Police Officer that is not guilty of committing a crime here. Most importantly, people lie. When you have friends, their friend got shot, they just robbed a store, they have a narrative to say that they were the victim here and not and they didnt do anything wrong at all. But ultimately, what we should be wanting is the truth to come out and not push an agenda or a side. If the officer shot a guy with his hands up, i want him to be charged with a crime. But i also dont want to just push for a crime to be committed because it fits a narrative that we want here. And thats my big problem with this, is we shouldnt be pushing a narrative here. And many people want him to be indicted but i havent heard anybody doing that. Marc, i see youre having trouble with your eyes there. I dont know whats going on with you. But listen. That is almost the motivation for the officer as well. The officer wants to protect his own interest as well, just as Dorian Johnson wants to protect or his life. Well, thats exactly right. And people somehow people somehow act shocked that this news came out. I fully expected, and we always fully expected Darren Wilson to say that, you know, that Michael Brown was being aggressive, that he reached for my gun. When most people are shot by Police Officers, the police say he was aggressive, he reached for my gun, i felt threatened for my life. In the car, though. Irrespective youve got to look at that. But ben, just i want to get marc lamont hill, hold on. There is always from the very begin, they have said there was an altercation in the car. What is coming out now is the evidence from the altercation in the car. Go ahead. And again i ben is somehow suggesting but ben, you keep speaking as it if people are suggesting we shouldnt look at the evidence in the car, that we shouldnt look at the evidence of whats happening. That we shouldnt want to get at the truth. Every Single Person ive spoken to wants the truth. Theyre not looking for a preset answer, a prefigured answer. I disagree. The problem is its not transparent. We dont know whats going on with the grand jury. Stuff leaks out. Its not clear. We have to move on because this is very important to get to. I want to get to the riots that happened in keene, New Hampshire at West Virginia university. It was this weekend. Largely white crowd. Violence and mayhem in the street. It was not largely portrayed in the media as, you know, thugs who were defying Police Officers. It was portrayed as hey, these are college kids and it just got out of control and they got out of control at this thing. Do you agree with that narrative . Mark, first. Quickly, all of you. Marc ma lont hill. This is a troublesome narrative. And yes, thats what happens. When white people do it, its different. We saw it in katrina. We saw it in ferguson. We see it everywhere. White people are looking for food, black people are looting. White people are being rowdy. Black people are being violent. Its a Constant Media angle we have to push back against. Ben ferguson . I disagree. Look, what did you want to do here . Did we want to shoot some of these kids and therefore it would be equal . Is that what youre implying . We should be glad that ultimately no one died and that a bunch of people didnt get shot. Thats a good thing. Make the police looked at ferguson and decided dial it back a little bit. A lot of Police Departments have looked at what happened in ferguson and realized we probably should dial it back. To me i dont think it has anything to do with race as much as they didnt want to be the next ferguson 2. 0. Marc, i cant get mark omara and marc lamont hill, im sorry. I am out of time. But again, i dont think anyone would want to be compared to this. I think the people in ferguson had more of an incentive to protest than these people. There was no incentive to protest. This just got out of control for no reason. So thanks to all of my guests. Up next, powerful video takes us to the front lines of the ebola battle in liberia. The new iphone is here and now you get 30 gigs of data to share starting at 160 dollars a month. The World Health Organization says ebola has killed nearly 2,500 people in liberia. On its website the New York Times has posted a powerful video that shows ambulance workers in monrovia who not only pick up the sick and dying but must also deal with others who are terrified of ebola spread. Heres part of that video. Bring it on the road and block the road. Please stay away from the dead body. Please stay away from the dead body. We are an Ambulance Team. Its very hard. They said the body had been there for a long time. So thats why they got angry. The entire city is covered with bodies. Theres nothing we can do. Its just devastating to watch. Ben c. Solomon, the New York Times journalist who produced that video, joins me now via skype from monrovia. Ben, thank you for joining us. Can you take us back to that moment . Anyone seeing this video can sense the hysteria and the fear here. Is that what a typical day is like for the Ambulance Team . No. Definitely not. That was a pretty particular day, pretty extreme circumstance. That was shot about a month ago. It was at a time when the situation here was pretty at its worst. Ebola was at its strongest and the response was at its weakest. And that man had died a couple hours earlier, and Ambulance Teams were so overloaded, the burial teams were too, so no one could come to pick him up. The community was outraged and kind of dragged him out to the road to kind of protest. Caused a bit of a stir. So it was a difficult day and it was a pretty intense moment to film. Im wondering, ben, if this is a reality check for people here in the United States because as concerned as people are here about ebola it is really nothing compared to what you have seen in west africa. And how things changed there during the course of this epidemic. Well, if you look at the numbers and you look at just the w. H. O. Reports on people that are getting infected, the numbers are steadily going up. Its almost 10,000 people across west africa that are infected now and almost about 4,500 that have died. So those numbers alone kind of arent lowering. They arent getting any easier. And the situation, there is a response building and there are different assets being put in place to help slow the spread. You can still feel the problems kind of around and you can definitely see the consequences of ebola within the communities and within the families that have lost some of their own. I think in your report, your report says that there are 15 ambulances for 1. 5 Million People and those ambulances just sort of rove the street every day. Another scene you witnessed is gutwrenching. I want people to watch as a young ebola patient is taken to a treatment center. Here it is. You cant take the people. Not enough ambulances. Not enough beds at a treatment center. What was it like to cover that moment, seeing a young girl in pain and being turned away from treatment . It was difficult. It was difficult to watch. But more importantly, it was difficult for the ambulance workers, who had to do this. I mean, their goal and their mission is to help these people. So when they have to come into situations where theyre not able ohelp not only are not able to help but are actively being stopped from helping, turned away from helping, its a devastating its a devastating moment for them. I was very lucky to be around them and to be able to see their courage. And in a situation like that i was really happy because i got to see this really telling moment, this really sad human moment. The family was really accepting of me being there. I talked to them before they took her out of the ambulance. And they were very willing to be shot. They were happy to kind of have their story told and make sure that their sorrows, their problems were something that could be learned from. So as sad a moment as it was, it was almost beautiful to be so included and so a part of such an important moment, to be able to share that with some other people in the world. That the family allowed you in for that very private and personal and solemn moment. I wonder because ashoka mukpo is, you know, the freelance nbc cameraman who came down with ebola. I wonder if you are worried about your own safety there. Of course. I mean, im just as human as any other liberians here, any other people that have gotten sick. The virus can affect me just as it can affect anyone here. What i have that most others dont here is education about it, the knowhow to understand how to prevent it, vigilance. Ive seen its consequences. Ive seen how badly its kind of devastated these communities. Ive been out here for a little over two months now. So ive seen a lot of how its affected the people. And you know, im supported by a western media organization. So in a way its just a matter of kind of taking care of yourself. But at the same time you respect the disease every day you go outside. You have to respect what it can do and not feel any sort of comfort or complacency with working in these places where its present. Ben solomon, video journalist for the New York Times, thank you. You know, i didnt know till i came here to israel this week that on my fathers side my grandparents died at were killed at auschwitz. I just see it now. I feel like ive been robbed of an experience of having grandparents. 6 million jews were killed during the holocaust. And i saw the documentation there. Place of extermination, whatever it was called, auschwitz. It really hit me, and i knew thats where i wanted to go. Arbeit macht frei. Work will set you free. Meaning was that that was a place for working, which was not true. It was for slave laborers. Yes. It was this kind of camp. But work was the instrument of extermination prisoners here. Reporter its one thing to learn about the holocaust in school or from books. But to see these places firsthand, some untouched since the war, can be overwhelming. Most of the jews who were brought here came by cattle car. And then began selection. Who lives and who dies. Exactly. In my particular case my grandparents died here. Probably they were taken right away to the gas chamber. People walked in, they really believed they were in so they thought maybe they were going to get a shower, but instead that was the gas chamber. Reporter while many jews from brought to auschwitz from far away, my dads family was unique. He grew up in a neighborhood in the town of auschwitz, which is also called oswiecim in polish and in yiddish. Arthur schindler, a local historian, agreed to help me find my dads childhood home. We have some school records. You see . This is information about the rachel blitzer, born yeah. Thats my aunt. And this is address. Lugianov 26. Now, weve looked over here. Theres no lugianov 26 anymore. No. Many houses in this whole area were taken down by the nazis. They were destroyed. Reporter like much of my journey so far im struggling to find remnants of my fathers life. Did this house exist before world war ii . Do you remember by any chance a family named blitzer . Reporter none of the neighbors remembered the blitzers or the house in which they once lived. But i did find a place where my family once stood. The town square. In the testimony that my father provided, he had three sisters. Only one sister survived. Rachel. Survived the war. But two of his other sisters, freia and hinda, when the nazis came in they were brought to this area. Two sisters, they were killed. They were young girls. Reporter its pretty much the same story on my mothers side. She survived, but her parents died during the holocaust. Im named after my grandfather, wolf zilber. People always ask, its the most frequently asked question i get, is wolf really your name . And i say yes, its my real name. I was named after my maternal grandfather. Reporter thats my cousin pepe dotan. We grew up together in buffalo. Shes here to help me find my mothers roots. Where the zilber residence was. What number was it . Number 12. Whatever house they had is gone. Yeah. Its closed. Reporter together we found whats left of my grandfathers old factory that produced clay pipes. Not far from that factory was the slave labor camp where my mother, her sister paula, and two brothers, mike and yurik, worked. But this was the land where the skarzisko labor camp, camp a, was. In this camp 24,000 jews came in for labor. Almost 18,000 died here. There was no crematorium here, but they simply burned the bodies, and they were told that they buried the ashes here in this place. Its conceivable that our grandparents are their ashes we have no idea. We have no idea, no. When you look at my mom now, shes 92 years old, you wouldnt realize how courageous she was when she was liberated in 1945 from the slave labor camp. They told all the jewish workers youre going to be marching on this death march. My mother knew that if they were on this forced death march they would die. This remarkable woman took her siblings and hid in the basement of the factory. And they stayed there for a few days until they were finally liberated by the russians. Yeah. Pretty amazing story. Pretty amazing. Amazing woman. To this day im very aware of the really courageous moves that my mom made. Shes obviously a very wonderful woman. Reporter before we leave poland, we visit the only Jewish Cemetery still left in the town of auschwitz. And i see a tombstone that says blitzer. I dont know if this woman was related to me. But i do what my father would have wanted. I say the special prayer for the dead, the kadish. [ speaking Foreign Language ]. [ voice breaking ] so after the war, after my parents were liberated, my mother by the russians, by the russian troops, my dad by the french troops, they did what most Holocaust Survivors immediately did once they were strong enough. They went and started looking for family members who may have survived. So they were on a train, and all of a sudden they saw each other. Their eyes met. They fell in love. Reporter within a few months they were married by an American Military chaplain, a rabbi. My dad found work in auchsberg, germany, where my sister and i were born. My dad always said, you know, in those days you didnt know what was going to be happening a week from now, two weeks. And after the years, what they went through during the war, they said you know, you had to grab life when you could. Reporter when my dad was visiting nearby munich one day, he saw a long line. So he got in it. It turned out it was a line for visas to america. The result of a law signed by president truman to bring Holocaust Survivors and displaced persons to the United States. A few months later we were moving to upstate new york. When he came to buffalo, people helped him get that job. They said oh, youll have a job at bethlehem steel, youll make some money. And they thought it was pretty cool. But it was awful. Its ungodly hot, its going constantly, and it will not stop if youre injured. Reporter my dad hated the steel mill and left after a year or so. He and my uncle sam freedman decided to open a small deli. 1434 hurtle avenue. It used to be blitzers delicatessen. And now its buffalo airbrush tan. Im wolf. Jessica, nice to meet you. Nice to meet you. This was the deli. I used to pack eggs here. Okay. I would come in on sunday mornings and pack eggs. So i would walk in over here. All right, guys, keep going. Work. Were working. Yeah. So this was where we used to pack the eggs. A lot of memories. Blitzers deli. Hard to believe. My dad didnt like the deli business much either. Then one day he was talking to friends he knew from the concentration camp. They were buying land. Developed all these homes. Reporter and building homes for g. I. S returning from the war. My dad decided to give it a try. My dad actually built this house. This is one of the first houses he built when he became a builder. Thats my house. Somebodys living there. Reporter it turns out my father had a knack for home building. And with a lot of hard work became a successful developer. I went to school here. This is where they taught me to be a journalist. Awesome. Really . Your roots. Thats exactly what it is. Thats me. Wolf blitzer. Wolf i. Blitzer. Student council, secondary representative. Concert band, dance band, debate club. German club. Humanities club. Cantorial. Advertising staff. Marching band. National honor society. Football jv. That was me. Reporter so after months of following my family tree, im right back where i started, my hometown. We watch you every day. Reporter its a place where i grew up, where i went to college, where i met my wife lynn and where, well, i also learned a lot about eating good food. How can we not have weve got to have andersons frozen custard. Were here, right . Wolf, where are we going right now . Teds. Enough said. What do you want on it . Mustard, relish, ketchup, pickles. The cool people say everything youve got. Would you like french fries . Yes, we would. Wed like all of the above. Its amazing my parents, after all they went through, the losses that they went through, i never sensed the vindictiveness. You know, they wanted to move on. My dad when he died in 2009, he was 82 years old, he was always upbeat. Whenever he would see me on television and my mother would see me on television, they would always say the same thing. You know, this is the revenge. This is the revenge to hitler and the nazis. Reporter im very proud of the new roots my parents planted here in america. Those roots have grown. And during this visit back to buffalo and indeed throughout my life i realized a lesson i learned from my parents. Like them, i try to grab life wherever i can. [ cheers ] wolf blitzer wow. So joining me now is cnns wolf blitzer. Wolf, you know, its very painful to experience some of this, but it was also very empowering, at least for me. What about you . Like you i was reluctant to do it originally because were professional journalists, we like to report about other people, we dont necessarily want to report about ourselves. But they wanted us to do it, and i got into the project. It took us several months. And eventually i really felt it became a labor of love, if you will. I really learned a lot. I learned a lot about myself in the process but learned a lot about my family, and i was really happy that i did it. It was empowering. And i recommend people do it who are watching if they have that opportunity to go back and see what happened not only to their parents, their grandparents, their greatgrandparents. I think it is empowering. Why so important by the way, your mom is a beautiful, beautiful lady. Why is it so important do you think for people to learn about where they came from . I just think that it helps us better appreciate where we are right now. I watched your piece, and it was really moving, very emotional. And ive spoken to your mother. You know, mothers are mothers. And they love their sons and they love their daughters. And its just its so important to just appreciate everything that your mom, for example, did for you. My mom and my dad, you know, did for me. It was just something that as a kid growing up you dont necessarily appreciate it, but once youre an adult and you see whats going on, especially as youve studied it, you really, really can understand the struggles and everything they did to try to get you to where you are today. Not just you but me and everybody. Yeah. Wolf, thank you for taking us along the journey with you. I really enjoyed it. Wolf blitzer, thanks. Thank you. You have the director of the centers for Disease Control and prevention say these updates will not make everyone completely safe but increase the margin of safety. They call for face shields, boot covers and other gear that leave no skin exposed. Many are saying this should have happened long ago. And repeated training and practice is required. This update comes after two hospital nurses in texas contracted the disease after treating an infected patient who later passed away. The nurses did not do anything wrong. Period. Weve got to make sure that that is very, very clear. The protocols that were written from written from original protocols that were written by w. H. O. Of treating ebola in a different setting, in a setting sometimes outdoors. Now in the United States youre treating it in a tertiary setting, youre doing invasive things, chemo dialysis and things like that. So the protocol that was quite successful worked very well in ebola in africa. The way that was written was a risk for the nurses, and they, they went by the protocol. They got infected. The family of the send nurse to contract ebola in the u. S. Says they are troubled by the suggestions that amber vinson ignored prevention procedures. The cdc cleared her to fly even though she reported an elevated temperature. Vinsons mother spoke with cnns don lemon. If she thought that she may be, you know, symptomatic or contagious, she would not have put other peoples lives at risk, would she . She would not have placed her life at risk, first of all, just, again, being a caregiver. Because part of what she needs to do is be healthy so she can help others. And youre right. Also to not affect anyone negatively. And then, being her mom, amber would never do anything to negatively impact me. It really is an insight there to not only how this impacts those who have ebola but the family and relatives and everyone whos trying to explain whats happening and theyre trying to do everything they can to safely get help. The quarantine, though, is now over for 48 people who came in contact with duncan, that includes his fiance. So they are in the clear. The contacts of the two infected nurses are still waiting. Reporter at least 43 people in Dallas County are breathing a sigh of relief after reaching the end of the monitoring period. But 120 others are still being monitored, including tiffany and byron waters. For them, relief for them is weeks away. From my understanding, if anythings going to happen, it would be this week. Reporter they flew on the same flights as amber vinson, the nurse who got infected after caring for thomas eric duncan. They realized they had sat next to the 29 year old outside the gate in cleveland. Did she appear sick to you . Did anything stand out . Not at all. Nothing stood out. There were no indications that she was sick at all. Reporter the waters say they were pro active and reached out to their own doctors and called the cdc twice before finally hearing back on friday. First few days were a little bit more nervewracking because we hadnt received any information on specifically what we should be doing, but once we got that, i think we were able to calm ourselves and, you know, just kind of wait it out. Reporter Health Officials in Dallas County asked dozens of Health Care Workers who had contact with duncan sign a legal document saying they would stay away from Public Places and transportation for days. The waters were placed under fewer restrictions. We were requested to have limited interactions and requested not to travel on public transportation. Reporter theyre now focused on getting through the rest of their monitoring period. Theyre thinking of vinson as she fights the deadly virus. I know shell get better. Reporter alina machado, cnn, dallas. The nurses at the dallas hospital where two colleagues were infected are speaking out for the first time. They defended texas Presbyterian Hospital and said they didnt want to be judged by this incident. Just listen. Just know this, our hospital is safe, and in my opinion, we have the greatest group and team of nurses in the world. They are brave, and they are strong, and they are courageous. Meantime, teresa ramos we remains in the hospital in spain, though she is clear of the virus. A woman who worked in sierra leone is also out of the hospital. A the unknown patient was treated at Emory University hospital and was released and a worker in sierra leone died over the weekend. Nigeria is declared free of the ebola virus. Nigeria had 19 ebola cases, including eight deaths. There are still big hurdles before ebola is eliminated across west africa. The w. Hshlts h. O. Counts more 9,000 cases and more than 4,000 of them have been fatal. Okay. Lets talk oscar pistorias. The one time golden boy of the country will learn his fate today. The judge will begin delivering her sentence in just over three hours from now. Pistorias was found guilty of the negligent killing of his girlfriend on valentines day last year. Reporter questions in court about whether your brother will be safe in prison. There have been Death Threats from gang leaders. Are you worried about him Going Forward . Absolutely. Any threat is something that needs to be taken seriously. And so we are obviously concerned for his safety. Reporter no matter what the court rules, Public Opinion has been particularly harsh. Reporter this is the new normal in ferguson. Protests night and day for the past 73 days. Their number one demand justice, and that means the arrest and indictment of officer wilson who shot and killed Michael Brown in august. Tensions are high again after new details about the investigation were leaked by a federal source to the New York Times, indicating forensic evidence may mean potential civil rights charges are unlikely. U. S. Law enforcement sources told cnn that browns blood was found on the gun, inside wilsons car and on his uniform. What that does is tends to support any testimony that there was some kind of scuffle inside the police car. And if so, that continues to support officer wilsons testimony and his justification for using deadly force. Reporter early on, browns friend said there was a scuffle, but that wilson was the aggressor. He pulled up on the side of us. He tried to thrush his door open, but we were so close to it, that it ricocheted off of us and bounced back to him. They are set to begin in the coming hours and are aimed at ending a standoff that has dragged on for more than three weeks now. Theyll be moderated by the president of Ling Nam University in hong kong. Im not going to speculate at all about whether there will be a resolution, but i hope as part of the agreement this is not the only dialog that will take place. Well, i am join ed now from hong kong. What is expected from these talks. Is any progress expected at all . Reporter it sort of depends on who you talk to. I wanted to bring you out here and show you this place. This is harcourt road in hong kong. All around me, im surrounded by tents. There are probably 700 of them in front of me and behind me. And to the left of me. If you get out in the crowd here, these people are really embedded. If you talk to them, they say we dont really have high hopes for these talks because were not leaving here until our demands are met. The Hong Kong Federation of students are the group that are going to meet. Its going to be televised as well. So its pretty important that the talks are happening. But youre asking about hopes. People here who are really entrenched are the core believers who dont think its going to go very far. One of the leaders of the major groups, he spoke out about injunctions that have been taken out. This is a new thing now, private businesses taking out an injunction to try to get these people to move away from the entrance and exits to their buildings and remove barricades. That will encourage more people to come out than to go home. Listen to this. Dont think that just because you have one or two injunctions that you can make the people on harcourt road disappear. I guarantee you that after you issue the injunctions the people here will only increase, not decrease. The civil disobeyed againyoobeo. Reporter people are even having viewing parties to see what goes on. But the chief executive has been quite clear about this dialog, saying this is a chance for the public to see the student groups put their case to the government, and he has, in some ways, said this is not a negotiation, but it is a first step, at least. Certainly, and whats interesting is that theyve said that theres been foreign interference. And they are concerned that what that may mean is an excuse to crackdown on them. Whats been the follow up on that, the latest on that part of the story . Reporter well, of course he has been pressed by various media organizations. And in fact he did do an interview with members of the press here in hong kong. There is a lot of chatter about that interview and some of the things he said but he has been pressed on that point, saying if you are saying that there is external forces at work show us the evidence of that. He says at the appropriate time well show the evidence, but no one is telling us who that is or who they suspect. So far at groups here are concerned they say it is spontaneous, there is no one leading us. And theyve maintained that position. Theyve certainly come down here and made that very clear. And after those comments they came down here. There were more rallies last night. You get those comments during the day from various officials and then the student groups come down and hold rally. Lets watch those talks and see if we can avoid the standoff continuing, rosemary. We will do many thanks to you. A canadian man accused of injuring two soldiers is now dead. And they are wanting to nona is know if that is a terror attack. This is outside montreal. They believe the man may have converted to islam and become radicalized. He called himself ahmad the converted. We will learn about the murder of a transgender woman. We have more on the flood of outrage released by the case. Reporter a mix of mourning and outrage. Family members and supporters react to the murder of a transgender woman in the philippine city. The body of jeffrey lorde. Joseph scott is pemberton is suspected of killing her. We can confirm a number of subpoenas have been issued. So we will continue to cooperate on this. Reporter pemberton is in the philippines as part of a joint training operation that began last month. Hes held on a vessel in the bay. The visiting forces agreement maintains that an accused serviceman will remain in u. S. Custody until the investigation is complete. The u. S. And philippines are longtime allies. The murder case, its said, will not change that. Translator name me anyplace that doesnt have a crime. And the sin of one person should be reflective of the entire country . I dont think so. Reporter encouraging words, but lauds family fear it will go unpunished. It minutes he robbed my son of his life. Its as if we let ourselves get killed. For me, id like to crush him for what he did to my son. And in the end, there wont be justice. What about the suffering he has caused. This is not acceptable. Reporter pemberton has not been formally charged and the marine corps will not comment on that until that happens. Prosecutors will determine if there is enough evidence toen could vi convict him. If i is c if he is convicted he will have to serve his time in the philippines. Welcome back, everyone. Australias flags are flying at halfstaff today to honor the life of the former Prime Minister gough whitlam. He issued sweeping changes. He was sacked after three years of having disputes from a constitutional crisis. His legacy is recalled. Reporter no modern government would try the sheer volume of change that he tried before his sacking. So much changed. So much electricity. There was a landslide at the end of 1975. But consider what he started the National Health insurance, withdrawing troops from vietnam. He removed god save the queen as the national anthem. He opened diplomatic relations with china. So much of what the Whitlam Government did back then and that was australias 7 network there. He was called a giant of his time. Lets bring you a business headline. Chinas Gross Domestic Product had its worst performance since 2009. The economy slowed to 7. 3 growth in the third quarter. Thats barely ahead of forecast in a cnn money survey. China will need a big Fourth Quarter rebound to meet its target of 7. 5 . They blame a weak real estate market. Apples stock had a big damda day monday and kept up the momentum. Apple shoppers are always bragging about their shiny new phones. The company beat Quarterly Sales and profit forecasts and sold more than 39 million iphones. That just slightly exceeded expectations and their own projections as well. The news came on the same day apple pay got up and running. If you have a new iphone 6 and the new software you can use your fingerprint instead of a credit card to make purchases. We gave it a test drive. Reporter the hardest part was updating to the apple operating system 8. 1. Once i did that, all i had to do was make a phone call to my credit card company. Do you have a lot of phone calls from people trying to set up apple pay . We are pretty swamped. Reporter you cant be in new york without your coconut water, a nice healthy salad. A lot of people trying out apple pay, or am i your first . Youre my first. Reporter all right, hold it up here. It recognizes it right away, it popped right up. Put my thumb print right there. It asked for my pin. Approved. Thank you very much. So did it feel revolutionary . Not quite. It felt like paying with my credit card, except i didnt have to take out my credit card. And other Companies Like samsung already have this technology in their phones and other companies have apps that are similar like google wallet. But it did make it feel like this payment is the future. In the meantime, youre still going to have to carry some cash and a credit card around. Cnn, new york. That is very cool, but, you know, you wonder, is it that much easier than taking out your own credit card, and with all the Security Issues weve seen, not just with apple but with others, how many people will adapt this new technology. It looks pretty cutting edge to me. We shall see. Lets speak to all you mcdonalds fans out there. Mcdonalds is finding it harder to do business in russia. Russian officials have shut down nine of the chains restaurants and opened investigations into about half of the countrys remaining mcdonalds. And this all started after the u. S. And europe issued sanctions against russia over the crisis in ukraine. Phil black has more on whether those sanctions could be to blame for the closures. Reporter since Vladimir Putin returned to the presidency in 2012, antiamericanism has been a feature of public debate. And it reached new heights with russia and the west deploying sanctions. Mcdonalds isnt targeted by sanctions, but this icon is finding it much harder to do business here. Mcdonalds says more than 200 of its 450 outlets across the country have been targeted by unannounced, still ongoing regulatory inspections. At least nine have been ordered to close temporarily for various issues, including hygiene issues. Ronald Mcdonald House is also being investigated for alleged financial wrongdoing. Now the Government Agencies responsible do not acknowledge any political motivation here, nor does mcdonalds. It just denies all the allegations and says it is working to get its restaurants reopened as quickly as possible. Phil black, moscow. Still to come here on cnn, you may have heard people complain that new Yorks Laguardia airport is one of the worst in the world. I could join in that chorus of people complaining, and it may be one of the best and the worst. [ highpitched ] nailed it [ normal voice ] youre right, that was really easy. I know, i told you so. Ive got something very interesting to show you here. Weve got a satellite loop from when this was a hurricane all the way to europe. And well follow it for you here as we check in on what was, of course, hurricane gonzalo in the Atlantic Basin here. Take a look at the path, slamming into bermuda. There you see the front that picked it up and protected the u. S. From a direct strike, certainly, and it hided up towards newfoundland and heading towards st. Johns, and it began its track on to a posttropical system and slamming into the u. K. Right now where the winds are pretty gusty indeed and the rain has commenced. It will intensify over the next few days. Lets pinpoint the timing here as far as the winds. Right now anywhere from 25 to 54 kilometers per hour. Thats going to be a big deal. Because i believe that will be ongoing throughout the day and we could have winds in excess of 70 miles per hour. 94 kilometer hours up towards aberdeen. Glasgow at 78 and even london will be seeing some issues. So if you have travels through these airports here, you need to check with your carriers. Tuesday, late into the evening we still have the winds. And theyll be leaving the u. K. But then heading into northwestern europe. Look at amsterdam now. Were taking you into wednesday, through the early part of the day. 75 to 95 kilometer winds. And then this leaves heavy rain as well, and not just rain, but as the system crashes into the alps, we going to have ourselves the first big snowstorm of this region here. Were looking at anywhere from 25 to 50 centimeters of the white stuff there. My goodness. The ski resorts are going to be loving this. There it is, in about 48 hours, the snow will be coming down in significant fashion as this low dives to the south and east. I will leave you with pictures of, well, not too far away from here, canary islands. Look at this flooding here. They picked up 65 millimeters of rainfall in a short amount of time. Look at these roads becoming rivers at this point with a low that is being monitored for development off the west coast of africa there. They only get about 18 millimeters per month and they got 65 in six hours. Thats how powerful it is. Unbelievable. Airports can of course be miserable places. Perhaps none as bad as the one in islamabad, pakistan. The travel website called sleeping in airports ranked the best and the worst. And islamabads is at the bottom of the barrel. Saudi arabia is second worst, and thats despite being called one of the most beautiful. And the only u. S. Airport on either list was new Yorks Laguardia, ranking tenth worst. And if youve been there, you know why. As for the best, singapores takes the top spot. South koreas incheon takes second with an indoor skating rink and casino. And your best . Worst . My worst is arriving at calcutta, the airport at midnight, many years ago was not a good experience. Your best . Dubai. Most interesting, had a catwalk through security in zambia.
