Spend time talking about the way theyre actually going to get killed by another black. Garners widow tells media shes afraid of police. Im scared of what can happen to them in the street by police. This Morning Police in oakland say five of their patrol cars were damaged over the weekend. Two officers had minor injuries dealing with the crowd. Injuries in thorn california standing in stark contrast from other peaceful protests in other parts of the country. Activists call for those through the week. This morning, a small group is gathered in washington d. C. Outside the capitol. Thank you. Appreciate that. In the face of anger and calls for change following grand jury decisions in ferguson and new york city, president obama weighing in saying progress has been made. Its important to realize as painful as incidents are, we cant equate whats happening now to 50 years ago. If you talk to parents, grandparents, uncles, theyll tell you things are better. Not good in some cases but better. So even as the president sounds hopeful, a bloomberg poll Shows Americans have a different view. Majority 53 say u. S. Racial relations have gotten worse under the first black president. 36 say relations have stayed the same. 9 say they have gotten better. Joining me now michaela davis, chuck nice comedian and tv personality. When i read that, why did you have that reaction . What, Race Relations have gotten worse . What struck me was under the first black president. Were associateing things have gotten worse under the first black president. I believe it has gotten worse, but it really hasnt. It seems worse because our perceptions have now come to the fore. Like oil rising to the top and floating on water. Thats really what has happened. I feel theyre more illuminated. Since the civil rights struggle, we thought we signed a few papers and people are okay. We havent had persistent Race Relations working. When you dont do that, this is what happens. It keeps coming up. In the age of new media, things are happening with the kind of urgency we havent seen before. I dont disagree with you on that. Thats a headline and this poll. Most see racial situations worsening i think obama turned on light to a lot of things we havent continued to work on. What you have to understand the way i look at it, any time a black man does anything, more attention is paid to it. When i walk into a store, all security is a bit more on alert. Thats the same thing thats happened with obama. Now that hes in office, more people are paying attention to politics, to what our government is doing. Paying attention to Race Relations. Theyre paying attention now because he is smng to Pay Attention to. They have a free space to communicate. They have twitter, instagram, facebook. If you ask low income blacks if there was a magical time things were better, will theres not. Theres a place people can km g communicate more. Theres a disconnect between white and black as you see in the poll. Everything you say, its illuminated and what have you, people theyre polling are saying why dont they think its better or gotten worse under the president . I think for white folks it looks like theyve gotten worse. Theyve been in a comfortable, privileged place and havent had to see it. Whats interesting about this moment particularly this tape in ferguson. Theyve seen what a lot of black folks and people of color and immigrants have been going through for a long time. Theyre able to connect our humanity. A poll said that 92 of white folks hang out with only white people. Theyre not at their Kitchen Table talking about police brutality. Now perhaps they will. Thats where the healing comes. Those 8 of them that are cool on the streets with people because there are a lot of young white folks in this struggle. They have to go back to communities and talk at their Kitchen Tables with white friends and families to really get in this work. I was looking for it. There were a couple of quote this is the bloomberg article. The quotes of white and black people were opposite especially when it comes to grand jury decision. Most whites agreed with the decision in ferguson but not the one that happened in new york. There are people that agree with both. One man said i have to do things different areally in white communities. Hes a black member of the military. He said sometimes people dont understand how you moderate and engage as a person of color. Theres a disconnect. How do you get to that, fix that . The way you fix the disconnect is that first of all we cannot have a conversation about race in this country. Were not mature enough to do so without becoming emotional. What we have to do is talk about the fact as they are. What can we do to change the facts as they are . We can work through those emotions. Those are real. Im mad as hell at you now. Thats where our humanity is. A lot of folks dont understand why people are angry. They dont understand why theyre being violent. They dont understand our history. This is exactly what i was about to say in agreement with your statement. Understanding. That has to be the focus of the conversation. Understanding each other. How do you get to this though . I get it all the time. Why are you talking about race so much . Youre race baiting talking about race. Stop it. Youre racist. Thats noise, a distraction. That black on black crime, all that litany of rehearsed one liners. I dont have time for it. We dont have the time in our community to be distracted by those sound bites, right. Part of what the work is again is engaged white folks. Please go back to your communities. Go back to your homes. Get involved in the work. Not just as an ally but a real advocate. I have to run. Were out of time. Clearly, something is going on when you look at thousands and thousands of people here on the streets across the country. Theres something that is brewing here. Thank you. Thank you. Appreciate both of you. Still to come on cnn, a u. S. Rescue attempt fails. An american hostage is among those dead. The message from washington is one of unity and resolve. Tried to free him from a compound in yemen. Militants killed another ho eede korkie. He was to be released yesterday in a deal struck without washingtons knowledge. Want to get to our pentagon correspondent Barbara Starr with the latest. Good morning. These hostage rescues are perhaps the most dangerous work that u. S. Special forces do anywhere in the word. This time as you say they were trying to rescue this american hostage luke somers. They did not know Pierre Korkie was there. He didnt know who the other man was according to u. S. U officials. It did not work in the end. The fire fight broke out. U. S. Believes the al qaeda terrorists killed the hostages at that point, shot them. The u. S. Tried to save them. Ultimately both died. Over the weekend, top lawmakers voiced support for this very risky mission. Have a listen. If were going to pay ransom to al qaeda so they can rape women, imprison men, women, children, thats a bad plan to start with. I agreed with the president s decision. You end up just funding other hostage taking and the cycle perpetuates itself. I think our decision is the right one. So what does it take to make one of these Missions Successful in the end . Well you have to have perfect intelligence, have to know exactly where they are, know where the bad guys are, have to know the whole lay of the land. In this case, as the navy seals were approaching the compound, a fire fight broke out. The al qaeda terrorists knew the seals were coming at the last minute or someone was coming. The u. S. Says they believe maybe the men were given away by something as simple as a dog barking in the distance. Goodness. Thank you barbara. Appreciate that. That will bring down power lines. Well get a lot of Power Outages from that low over new york. Because it is here and not here, the cold air doesnt get behind it. The cold air is way west. If this was 150 miles further east, we would be talking a two foot snow event for new york city. Not going to happen. Only going to get rainfall. Look at winds tomorrow. 43 Miles Per Hour gusts. Factor in manhattan, there could be 60 to 65 Miles Per Hour tomorrow. Get ready for that. Umbrellas inside out. Its going to be raining hard as well. Heavy rain for the west coast. Lets talk as the bell is ringing. A false start. The opening bell sort of ringing this morning. On friday it was close, but month cigar for dow hitting 18,000. It got within ten points of the psychological milestone. Numbers are getting further and further way because of worries creeping in. Japans economy contracted more than expected in the Third Quarter. Out of europe theres a warning about the economic prospects there with one policy maker warning of a massive weakening of the economy. Eurozone unemployment 11. 5 , here its much better. Our economy is getting stronger. Our markets are more attractive. Look at Third Quarter earnings. Companies are doing really well. Economic Growth Continues to rev up. Lower oil prices there are leading to lower gas prices. Thats expected to lead to more Consumer Spending which is important because Consumer Spending makes up the line share of economic activity. You know what, they did make the expecting 18,000 to hit. We cant wear it yet. Ill wear it like this until the dow hits 18,000. Shes balling on wall street. All right. I would do my peace sign, but people would take it out of context and think it was a gang sign. I love it. Heres the thing. Im optimistic right. When everything is going great. Dow 18,000, gas prices im like all this stuff, when is the shoe going to drop . Lets talk about why. 17,000 in july. Now talking 18,000. The u. S. Economy is doing better than the rest of the world. A fed is no longer having to stimulate the economy anymore. In fact businesses are spending and hiring. Those low gas prices alisyn was talking about, thats a stimulus for the american consumer. When investors look around the world they look to china, asia, europe. They say the u. S. Is where they want to be. A lot of strategists are looking at next year saying we think stocks will continue to go up. Companies are making money, building plants, buying equipment. The broadening out of how the economy has been fairing. More and more sectors are are starting to do better now. Youre seeing the stock market rise. Since ive known you for the what 125 years that ive been here, youve always said its a marathon. The stock market is the long haul. Im glad you said that. People look at 18,000. Its a number a round number. You care about how much you returned this year in 401k. S p 500 is the bigger average, the bigger index. Probably what stocks and 401k look like, thats up 12. 3 this year. Three years double digit gains. A lot worried about what could derail it . At least for now, numbers are good. I wouldnt worry about the pull back either. Look at 17902. Its been a great year in stocks. I think it affects more people, gas prices, than the stock market. Absolutely right. How much lower can they go . 15 to 20 cents. Its real money in your pocket thats going back into the economy. Everyone sharpening pencils going, what does this mean for the economy and globe when not paying so much for gas . Watching gas and Oil Prices Lowest in four years. Now that i live in new york gas prices are cheaper. When i was in atlanta commuting in the fourdoor sedan, it killed me. Thats the National Average. 2. 67. Thats a National Average temperature. Theres no such is thing. Its different everywhere dnding on taxes. Low in oklahoma and texas. Some places have less than 2 gallon gas now. Thats great. Unless people start buying big cars again. Then prices go up again. Youre stuck with a higher bill. Dont do that. Thank you. Youre welcome. Still to come, lrolling stoe is changing the story about the alleged brutal gang rape at the uva frat house. We have the latest with sarah from virginia. Hi sarah. Reporter hi. Good morning. Rolling stone changing its apology taking blame off the alleged victim. Well tell you what National Organizations are calling for uva to do now. Three National Greek organizations are calling for an apology and immediate reinstatement of all fraternities and sororities on the university of virginia campus. Last month, all greek operations shut down in the wake of an explosive Rolling Stone article detailing a brutal gang rape at a fraternity house. Now discrepancies are beginning to surface. Rolling stone is apologizing. Sarah has the details. Reporter Rolling Stone magazine says they are to blame for their unraveling story about the alleged gang rape inside the university of Virginia Fraternity house, asking the public to avoid criticizing jack jackie, the unidentified accuser at the center of the article saying in a statement these mistakes are on Rolling Stone not jackie. The attorney for the fraternity tells cnn several details in the article are just wrong. He says records show there was no party the night jackie claimed she was attacked. Theres also no side staircase inside the frat house which the article States Jackie walked down after the attack. And the Fraternity Brother that allegedly brought her there was never a member of phi kappa si. Now students are urged to keep focus on a larger problem, how university and students react to reports of Sexual Assault. I remember crying when it happened. I remember saying no. I remember pushing him off of me. Emily powell says she was assaulted last year at uva by a fellow student following a first date. Why didnt you go to the hospital the next day . I asked a person who also happened to be a friend of the person who assaulted me to take me to the hospital because she had a car. She told me that she would take me in a week once i had calmed down which very much felt to me like she thought i was making this up. They threaten had the they would tell the police i was obsessed with the idea of rape. I would accuse anyone of rape, and they would say i was mentally unstable. As you mentioned, in response to the Rolling Stone apology, those greek organizations demanded uva apologize and reinstate fraternity functions here on campus. Those statements go pretty far. They seem to imply they believe the entire Rolling Stones story was false. Weve talked to several of jackies friends here. They say they do believe something bad did happen to her, but it is clear to them there were some inaccuracies in that story. Thats for police now to figure out in the ongoing investigation. Oh boy. What a mess. Thank you very much. Lets talk about this now with cnn senior media correspondent and uva professor susan. Brian, on the one hand, Rolling Stones says their trust was misplaced. They havent fully retracted the story. Who and what do we believe here . Were in the phase were trying to figure that out. They apologized but not retracted. Theyre not saying the story is false. Initially there probably wasnt enough explanation in their story. People thought somehow the story was completely inaccurate and she made it up. The fact they revised a day earlier shows chaos at Rolling Stone. They spent the weekend reviewing and back checking the story doing work they should have to begin with. A reporter said it best over the weekend. Bad journalist harms everything it touchs. The bad journalist here casts a shadow over all of it. Susan, the alleged victim stands by her story. Three major National Greek organizations including the Political Action committee are asking for an apology and immediate reinstatement in uva in the wake of this. Should fraternities and sororities be allowed to operate on campus again . First of all those discrepancies in the story does not mean the substance is inaccurate. Trauma affects memory. False reports are extremely rare. In fact the opposite is true. We know theres one in five women that are sexually assaulted in college and very few of those are reported. Whether or not this story is 100 credible does not take away from the fact that we need to address the issue of Sexual Assault on this campus. In terms of fraternities, we also know that while rapes take place in many places, not just College Campuses, also the military, and on College Campuses not only in fraternities. One thing that has happened in the wake of this article is theres been more scrutiny of fraternity culture. We know for example members of fraternities are three times more likely to sexually assault someone than non members. Theyre also twice as likely to bing drink. The way it works at uva is sororities are dry. Parties take place at fraternities. Men police the entrance and evaluate womens appearance. When women enter, theyre not on their own turf. Alcohol flows. It really is a climate that enables sexual and a lot of other behavior when you add alcohol. So many members would say it turns them to adults and improves the rest of their lives. I think shes right. Theres discrepancies about the Rolling Stones story. We should keep focus on the bigger issue here, correct . Theres been a lot of concern about were not going to take other claims of Sexual Assault seriously. That will only happen if we let that happen. A lot of times Something Else happens and people become outraged. In this case were seeing great journalism. I want to speak about the you spoke to someone that a knows the alleged victim in the article. She says she believes the writer had an agenda . The writer was coming okay. I left that article feeling uncomfortable. Others felt uncomfortable after being interviewed. We dont know if it was the degree of questions being asked because this is a difficult topic and painful topic to talk about or the way certain questions were being presented. So what was the agenda for Rolling Stone . Whats next . She says the writer was trying to paint unflattering picture of the fraternity. She has done that but maybe though the the right ways. The writer seems to have gone in hiding. Thats not the best for her. Id love to hear from her, why she didnt reached out to the alleged attacker and agreed jackies request not to contact the attacker. Can this put the attention back on the real story in some ways . I suggest the media take focus on Rolling Stone. A debate about journalistic responsibility shouldnt be allowed to undermine survivor credibility and to take the focus away from actually the really gavel nicing things that happened. There are a small number of people that realize this has been an issue forever and forever unfortunately. There was Mass Mobilization on the part of students, faculty. Letters have been written. We have examining the process already happening. It has received more scrutiny. A key piece has been looking at student culture and the fact fraternities play a disproportionate role in student life. Faculty would like to see residential colleges we have to run. Complete your thought really quickly. Im just saying i really think a lot of valuable suggestions have come out in terms of diversifying uva social life. We hope that momentum will continue. Thank you both of you. Cnn sports anchor rachel nick ols is here following this story. Hey don. We saw displays in cities around the country yesterday. The nba has been having them too. Tonight, lebron james is considering wearing an i cant breathe shirt when he goes out for warmups in front of the royals and kate and will tochbl tonight. Well get into that. Five st. Louis rams players came it. The Detroit Lions running back reggie bush wore a shirt that said i cant breathe and you had a player for the browns and rams scrawl i cant breathe on their gear. The most highprofile display came in the nba when derrick rose, a former mvp of the league, wore a tshirt preprinted that said i cant breathe and that caused so much attention that lebron james, the mvp of the past four or five years said that he liked derrick roses shirt so much that he said i want to get one. In fact, he was ruminating about about wearing one tonight when the cavaliers flay nets in front of the visiting royal couple kate and william. But its not just the tshirts. Were seeing athletes speak out in a strong way. I want to show you what Amari Stoudemire from the New York Knicks sid. He said law enforcements job is to protect and serve. Your first job is to protect and your second job is to serve. He says obviously its not happening that way. Thats obviously a strong statement for an athlete to make. I understand rams fans are doing some protesting of their own . What happened with that . Obviously when there is an action, they say equal and opposite reaction, right . And the rams when they did come out of the tunnel with their hands up we know they upset the Police Officers association and these fans were upset as well. At the time of kickoff of this weeks rams game you had rams fans gathering here to set fire to some of their rams paraphernalia, rams jerseys in some cases of the players who had come out with their hands up. And this is what is interesting about all of this is the reaction that its getting and athletes who this time are willing to say yeah, i dont care, i want to say what i think. We didnt see that so much in the previous maybe 20 years. We saw that, of course, in the 60s, mohammed ali, billie jean king. The protest at the mexico city games. Then we had a big stretch of the commercial athlete. Michael jordan epitomized that, the idea that he wasnt going to say anything that might damage the brand. And he got criticized for that. And he did but he never did it. Lebron james has led this new generation of athletes. He stood up in the Trayvon Martin incident. He talked about ferguson and a lot of athletes have followed suit. Aaron rogers has been talking about congo. So you have guys willing to put themselves out there and if people are burning their jersey, theyre burning their jer. I i wonder how the board room is reacting to that . So far were seen apparel makers stand behind their athletes. I think there are many people who will go out and buy a derrick rose sneaker as who might not. It works both ways. Thank you, rachel. Always a pleasure. Rachel nichols. We have a oneonone interview with departmenting defense secretary chuck hagel. He is making his last visit to afghanistan and assessing the extended mission that will far outlast the final days in command. Jim sciutto is our chief National Correspondent traveling with hagel and he joins us from kuwait city. Hello, jim. Hi, don. Something of a farewell tour for the defense secretary hagel. This coming just after the announcement of his departure but also a farewell for u. S. Forces there as they draw down and transition from a combat role to an adviseandassist role for Afghan Forces there. That said, there are going to be more u. S. Troops in afghanistan as of 2015 then under the original plan. In fact, a thousand more troops. Secretary hagel announced 10,800 instead of the 9,800 originally planned because, as secretary hagel told us as we spoke, afghanistan remains a very dangerous place. This is chuck hagels fourth trip to afghanistan but his last as secretary of defense. We travelled with him to a Tactical Base in eastern afghanistan where he met with troops, sharing his own experiences, the first enlisted combat veteran to serve as defense secretary. Do you think it will be a loss as the defense secretary position to have someone who doesnt have that experience in the role . Thats not for me to decide. Everybody brings to their positions their own set of experiences and their own strengths and i believe my set of experiences fit me very well. But thats chuck hagel. I dont ever judge anybody else. Reporter at the end of the month, u. S. Forces will give up their combat role for training, advising and assisting Afghan Forces. A new mission as the u. S. Prepares for a complete withdrawal in the coming years. We saw how the iraqi forces dissolved with the advance of isis. Why are you confident that Afghan Forces will perform better . They want us here
