Hi, carol, more word on the people aboard the plane, ten nationals involved, reportedly 50 french citizens, 24 from burkino faso. Five canadians, others from africa and europeans nations. This plane has actually been missing for about ten hours, because it was an Early Morning predawn flight, leaving from burkino faso, its capital, for what should have been a three or fourhour flight Straight North to the capita of algeria, but it went the contact was lost about 50 minutes into the flight. It was going burkino faso over malli into algeria. According to the flight path weve been told about. Its somewhere possibly over malli. This was a spanish company, swift air, right here in madrid that has a fleet of airplanes, with some sort of charter or lease arrangement with algerias national air carrier, al algerie on this plane, which is now missing, which has sent governments across africa and europe scrambling to try to find out what happened. Al, was there bad area in the area . This is the report, that the pilot requested a change of route because of heavy storms which a pilot here in madrid has just told us an iberian pilot who just flew a similar route said that storms this time of year in west africa are very common. Communications from an airliner to the ground in the best of times are different so this appears to be the scenario thats playing out, whether a possible change, of course and then the plane was lost, according to reports. Also a startling admission from a top prorussian rebel leaders in ukraine. In an exclusive interview with reuters, that rebel commander confirmed that his fighters did instead have a buk missile launchers. And he says that may have come from russia, just as the United States suspects. Heres his quote. That buk i know about, i heard about it, i think they sent it back. They probably sent it back in order to remove proof of its existence. The commander later said he was misquoted. Also new this morning, australia sending about 50 of its federal Police Officers to london, and their next stop could be the crash site in eastern ukraine. That force could join an International Deployment to secure the site and any evidence there. Also in the next hour, dozens more of the victims are due to arrive in the netherlands. Two planes are en route from ukraine carrying some 74 coffins. Yesterday a national day of mourning, citizens lined the streets to pay somber tribute for the first 40 k06ens that arrived back home. Secretary of state john kerry is back in cairo, egypt this morning trying for a second time to end the bloodshed and broker a deal between israel and hamas. Wolf, are they close . Reporter theyre getting closer, but still not there. Its going to take a while. The egyptians have been working on their proposal. They have a lot of influence in the region, the palestinians in gaza, hamas, specifically they want the egyptians to emon up that border between gaza and sinai. They would like to see israel ease some of the restrictions at the same time in order to stop the shelling, it is rockets and missiles coming into a gaza. Israel says its prepared for a ceasefire. The hamas leadership in qatar yesterday said they would like a humanitarian pause. They want some concessions at the same time. They have a whole set of grievances that they put forward. Secretary of state john kerry is working hard. He met with the Palestinian Authority president Mahmoud Abbas in ramallah yesterday, had a long meeting with ben anyone netanyahu. Hes meeting with the egyptian leadership, speaking with the qataris. They have a lot of influence with hamas. They have good relations with hamas, and qatar most importantly have a lot of money that could ease the restrictions on the palestinians in gaza. Turkey is playing a role at the same time because the turkish government has a Good Relationship with hamas at the same time. So the United States doesnt talk to hamas, so these other parties are doing some of the intermediary work. Im hearing theyre making a bit of progress. Its going to take a few more days. In the meantime the israelis are trying to do as much damage to hamas as they can, destroy those tunnels which go from gaza into israel, destroy the rocket launchers, the missile launchers. Hamas is continuing to launch rockets and missiles, a whole barrage came into Central Israel just a few hours ago. So its a tense situation, very tense right now. Theres a bit of movement. Well see if secretary kerry and the others can get the job done to achieve some sort of ceasefire. Wolf blitzer reporting live for us this morning. U. S. Flights coming in and out of tel aviv airport have been once again given the go ahead by the faa, the question is, is all of this too soon . Is it too soon to lift the ban on flights into and out of israel . This is what Martin Savidge saw in the skies over bengurion just moments before doing a live report. Yeah. Wow. That was right over the airport. That rocket was headed toward the airport. It was intercepted by israels famed iron dome, the very same kind of rocket that prompted the faa to tell airlines to stay away from the main airport earlier this week. Hi, martin. Reporter yeah, the good news is there were no rockets that struck on the ground, certainly no reports of injury or damage, but the real question is going to be and im sure the israelis are worried that those airlines still have yet to decide, of course, the faa clears it, but the airlines havent decided, and thats not going to help. Removing restrictions on u. S. Passenger airports flying to and from tel aviv. The decision coming 1 1 2 dales after flights were suspended due to security concerns. When a rocket destroyed a home a mile from bengurion airport. Warning sirens prompting this frantic scene later in the day. The whole airport rushed into the bomb shelters, and it was terrifying. Reporter according to a statement the faa said it worked with the u. S. Government to assess the security situation in israel, and review both significant and new information and measures the government of israel is taking to mitigate potential risks to civil aviation. Since the ban was nabbeded israeli officials have lobbied the u. S. Government, insisting the u. S. Is safe. Theres for reason whatsoever for the mistaken faa decision to instruct american planes not to come here. Reporter while hamas continued to tout the decision as a great achievement, saying isolating israel from the world is a great victory for the resistance and a destruction of the enemys dignity. Earlier wednesday former new york mayor Michael Bloomberg called the ban a mistakes in a conversation with wolf blitzer after traveling to israel in a show the support. We have to take reasonable precautions, but you cannot shut down everything just because one terrorist someplace on the other side of the world says im going to be a threat. Reporter meanwhile, secretary of state john kerry traveled to the region on a military jet wednesday to press ahead on talks with both sides, as the deathcow. Back here to tel aviv. That will certainly be welcomed by the Israeli Government yet to be heard from are the other u. S. Carriers. The other thing that should be pointed out is even if the planes come, it will be sometime before they arrive. You have to work out the schedule once more. Then the next question, how many people will actually be on board . Its peak tourist season, but not many feel this is the right time to come. Martin i know his shot broke up a bit. In case you didnt hear him, united has decided to follow the fff and allow flights into and out of the israel. We have yet to hear from delta and u. S. The deaths penalty and the way we execute killers is open for debate again. A convicted killer joseph wood died nearly two hours after the start of his execution in arizona. Witnesses say he gasped for air more than 600 times. Wood, who was convicted of shooting his exgere friend and her father. Lawyers had time to petition the court for a stay of execution. He kind of looked like as if he was trying to breathe or catch air. Joe wood is dead, but it took him two hours to die, and to watch a man lay there for an hour and 40 minutes gulping air, its liken it to catching a fish and throwing it on the shore. Well, you know, despite going for a rerue of the process, jan brewer is standing by this execution, calling it lawful. She said that it was, quote, justice was carried out, but she also importantly noted the excruciating suffering that woods victims endured in this double murder. However, this latest execution that just happened yesterday, it is adding to that debate over what drugs are being used in lethal injections. To hear a deep snoring sucking air sound. Reporter thats how some are describing the execution. Wood was convicted of a double murder in 1989 for killings his estranged girlfriend. It took him two hours to die. The attorneys reportedly called Supreme CourtJustice Anthony kennedy in an attempt to stop the execution, stating that the process violated woods constitutional right to be executed without cruel and unusual punishment. If the execution isnt bungl bungled, theres no need to go in and ask the courts to intervene. But there was a very different account of what happened from the woman whose father and sister were murdered by wood. I dont believe he was gasping for air. I dont believe he was suffering. It sounded to me as though he was snoring. You dont know what excruciating is. Whats excruciating is seeing your dad lying there in a pool of blood. Seeing your sister look lying there in a pool of blood. Thats excruciatinexcruciating. This man deserved it. Reporter arier this week okaying on halted all the scheduled executions. You Arizona Department of corrections denies any claims of wrongdoing, saying in a statement that the department, quote, followed the execution protocol, but adding that the department would conduct a full review. For the family of woods victims, the debate over drugs stirs up deep feelings. I saw the life go out of my sisters eyes, as he shot her to death. Im so sick and tired of you guys blowing this drug stuff out of proportion. To me thats b. S. Very important points to make. The background is, as you know, a number of states in this country with the Death Penalty have really been left scrambling to try to find alternatives to a key drug thats been used in the past in lethal injection cocktails after a sole u. S. Manufacturer, the only one in this country that made that drug stopped producing it in recent years. Other countries outside the u. S. Banned the import of it into the United States because of their objections to the Death Penalty, but this brings up that question of the drugs being used in these executions, carol. Because as sad as it is, as hard and difficult to understand, our constitution requires you have to kill someone humanely, if thats even possible. Its in our constitution. Right, it is, and you listen to these family members. You heard them. They are in such pain as well. So it is this predicament. Theyre saying why this debate . What about our pain and suffering . But this continues from oklahoma to arizona. This is really forefront right now. Poppy harlow, thanks so much. Still to come in the newsroom a second day of mourning of victims aboard flight 17. Dozens more coffins are said to arrive in the netherlands. Forensic investigation now under way to try to identify those who died. Well take you live to the netherlands next. Papapapapap. The gap begins to close. So lets simplify things. Lets close the gap between people and care. Another somber day for families who lost loved ones aboard flight 17. 70 more coffins carrying the victims will be flown by military plane to the netherlands today for forensic analysis. Sima is live on the phone. Tell us more. Reporter im once again on the tarmac where were expecting a dutch plane and Australian Military aircraft to land within the next hour. Well see somebody similar to what we saul yesterday, will land to the sound of a trumple call, and then a oneminute silence once again a mark of respect, a symbol of restoring their dignity. The families and loved once, and of course the bodies of those passengers on board mh17 have been through incredible trauma over the past week or so. It is a week to the day since mh17 left amsterdams airport, crashing on the edge of ukraine. Carol, today right now where im standing there are no dignitaries here just yet. We are seeing the seats being lined up. The king and queen and dutch Prime Minister were here yesterday, but today we believe in ministers will be here and dignitaries from various embassies will be invited, but the only sound here is the rattling of these flags which are flying at half math. Saima mohsin reporting live from the netherlands this morning. A freeland journalist has been detained in eastern ukraine. Antoine skiba was detained, but we dont know why. Lets head out to donetsk. Why was he detained . Reporter this took place 48 hours ago just outside the hotel where im standing in rebelcontrolled donetsk, when my colleague phil black was returning from his team after a day of reporting at the crash site. It appeared there were a group of gunmen and a senior official from the selfdeclared donetsk peoples republic who were waiting for our arriving team. They approached the team and asked about what we describe in the business as the fixer, basically a translator, a ukrainian local, who had been working for us for one day. He was on the spot accused of having posted ransom rewards for the death of rebel fighters on his facebook page, and he was abruptly taken away. Skiba did not resist as he was taken away. He has since been in the custody, we believe, of the separatists for almost 48 hours. Now, cnn has not reported on his detention thus far, because we were working behind the scenes with separatist officials trying to secure this young mans release, who only worked with us for one day. He had also worked with the bbc here in the wake of the crash of Malaysian Air flight 17. Weve confirmed that he also worked for a moscowbased newsmagazine called russia reporter last year as a photographer. The accusations against him have evolved during his detention. The deputy Prime Minister in charge of industry, who led the detention on tuesday evening, later in the evening told me that he was being detained not because of his facebook posts, but because he had different forms of identification with different last names on them. We have not gotten any response from the separatist officials today, thursday, any update on antoines welfare. In the meantime, a number of Human Rights Organization and press freedom organizations, including reporters without borders, the committee to protect journalists and the osce, which has international monitors on the ground here, have all demanded for skibas Immediate Release and are worried for the deteriorating environment for journalists operating in this war zone. Carol . So evolving allegations, are any of them remotely true . We had a very short relationship with antoine skiba. We worked with him for one day. He worked as a translator and worked professionally. The other News Organization we have spoken to they said also he seemed to work as a translator basically, a local guide on the scene in what is an increasingly tense environment here, as battles have been taking place just about 5, 10 miles away from where im standing right now. The death toll growing, civilians killed on the outskirts of this city earlier this week. So it is arguably a tense environment, but at the same time seeing a colleague basically dragged away in front of us by gunmen who accused him of being a terrorist, without really supplying in any evidence and then not really providing any updates on this mans welfare, that is of extreme concern. The committee to protect journalists has pointed out that at least ten people, foreign journalists have been detained at least briefly by separatists in the wake of the downing of Malaysian Air flight 17, also tuesday night a british reporter for the moscowbased organization Television Network russia today has gone missing while trying to report on some of the shooting, and a cameraman from the a. N. N. A. News agency has also gone missing. Its an increasingly tense environment. Reporters who are triering to report on this are having an increasingly difficult time. Antoine skiba called us on wednesday very briefly to say he was okay, he was being questioned in the custody of the separatist security services, and then that call was abruptly cut off. We do not know whether that call was made under duress. Well, ivan, you stay safe. Thanks for filling us in. I appreciate it. Still to come in the newsroom children in gaza are dying at a rate of one per hour. Up next, a report on how the young and innocent are losing their lives at a rate far greater than hamas fighters. Sthoo good morning. Im carol costello. Thank you so much for joining me. The faa has hitsed a ban on flights into and out of bengurion airport in tel aviv. Three domestic carry es that fly into israel delta, us airways and united will decide a late crumb date. Delta has decided to resume flight. Theres no letting up in the conflict between israel and hamas now well into the third week of fighting. More than 700 mind yansz have been killed in the fighting, 4600 wounded along with 35 israeli deaths. 32 have been soldiers according to the gaza health ministry. Secretary of state john kerry is back in, and take a look at this. This was a tweet from the International Space station, you can see the rocket fire even from space. As the war between israel and hamas continues, the casualties of the young and innocent in gaza are paying a high price. Children have been dying at a rate of at least one per hour, far more than hamas fighters, according to the united nations. Cnns Paula Hancocks has more for you. Reporter more children than hamas fighters have been killed so far in gaza according to the united nations. Innocent victims of a conflict they were born into. One child has been killed each our in gaza over the past two days. Each of these children had a name and a future and a life that was cut horribly short. Reporter they went to the beach to play football. It cost them their lives. Four children age 9 to 11 killed by israeli fire. Another father loses a son. Small bodies carried through the streets of gaza. Grief over lives barely begun, yet already over. Translator age 5, age 9. Reporter names of young victims were read out at the u. N. By palestinian observer. Children are often the biggest casualties in gaza, and surprising as almost half of the population is under the age of 14, in the midst of one of the most densely populated territories on earth, there are few places for the young to run and high. Of more than 600 palestinians killed, 161 are children as of wednesday morning. Of 3500 injured, a third are under the age of 18. Even though without physical scars, bear the invisible battle wounds of trauma. Losing parents or homes, or simply listening to the macabre soundtrack of a battle fought nearby. With such a long population unable to leave gaza, no one doubts that more small graves will be dug and filled before this fighting ends. Paula hancocks, cnn, new york. Well be right back. If you are wondering why it is now safe for planes to fly into and out of israel today and it wasnt so safe two days ago, so are we. Many wonder if the decision to ban flights was political. Republican senator ted cruz certainly thought it was, sending out this statement slamming the president. Cruz said, quote the facts suggest that president obama has just used a federal Regulatory Agency to launch arch economic boycott of israel in order to try to force our ally to comply with his Foreign Policy demands. Well, the state Department Fired back, calling cruzs accusations, quote, ridiculous and offensive, which is pretty much what Michael Bloomberg told wolf blitzer in a Testy Exchange last night. Im just asking if you thought there was political motive behind the travel advisory or the faa decision. Number one, i wouldnt know. A lot of people in israel do. I dont know, you dont know, but just the tone of the question of trying to create dissension is insulting to america. And it went downhill from there. I want to bring in cnn political commentator and democratic strategist ma rena cardona, and columnist for the blaze will, welcome to both of you. Why do you think bloomberg got to defensive. I dont know why. I think he gave the right answer. If wolf blitzer asked if there was political and possibly even inside the head of john kerry or barack obama, your answer must inevitably be i dont know, but why did he need to get so defensive . I think Michael Bloomberg is a believer in government. He separates it into efficient and inefficient, not malignant and benign. He doesnt want journalists really questions the motives of government. Hes happy to blame the bureaucracy, and i think hes probably right. It was probably a mistake of bureaucracy. The evidence that its been overturned in 36 hours validates that. Really . After flight 17 . Shouldnt you err on the side of caution . First of all, im saying i think it was a decision made within the bureaucratic machine. I dont know if there are political motivations. I imagine the faa was being extremely cautious after you point out flight 17 and this flight in africa thats gone missing as well, but the question is was that a mistake . The answer is probably yes. But maria, this is what it sort of seems like to me. Lifting ban was mower political than putting the back into place. Why are we more safe today than yesterday . When there were two rockets fired toward the airport just this morning . Part of the situation going on with israel with their fight currently with gaza is or with the palestinians is that this changes second by second, and neither you nor will nor i are privy to the conversations that are going on regarding those second by second changes in terms of the situation on the ground. I think the faa was absolutely right on you to ban those flights, given there was a missile that was fired and landed a mile from the airport not too long ago. In fact, they were behind the curve because Delta Air Lines was the very first one to say, hey, were not landing there, as it their prerogative. The faa i think absolutely did the right thing to halt flights until they could get the exact intelligence of what is going on on the ground. They said they were going to continue to monitor that minute by minute, and as soon as they felt safe for the time being lifting that ban, they did so. Right. But heres the thing, well. Delta led the way, then the faa acted. Now the faa is leaving it up to the airlines to decide whether or not they want to fly into israel. Shouldnt the faa be leading in aaspects . Isnt that their job, to protect us . Irpts i think they were, you bring up a point, which is the political side, the initial ban or the lifting of the ban . I would suggest that would be pretty braising politics to lift a ban when you had a legitimate risk of a plane being shot down. I dont think any administration would bend politics to that potentiality. If were guessing which was the mistake, which one do they wish they hadnt done . Its the original ban. You heard wolf blitzer with the mayor of jerusalem. You heard Michael Bloomberg. Its safe. Of course theyre not going to say its not safe. Or perhaps they dont regret either decision. Why . Because this is exactly their job they need to figure out the best thing with the number one priority above all being the security of citizens, of aircraft, of everyone whos flying into that area. I would say that bloomberg is very passionate about this issue, but i think the fact that he said he doesnt believe its political lends credibility. He understand that is the faas job. And by the way, the airlines always have the prerogative, no matter what the faa does to decide especially if they think that its unsafe the same way that delta does. Well have to leave it there. Maria, will, thanks for the discussion. Ill be right back. When salesman alan ames books his room at laquinta. Com, he gets a ready for you alert the second his room is ready. More sad news to pass along and im sorry about that, that el al geary plane that went missing after it took off from algeria, we can now say according to reuters the plane did, indeed, crash. 116 people were aboard that plane. About an hour after the plane took off, it simply disappeared from radar. We understand there was rough weather in the area kind of normal for this part of the world. But again, we can confirm that plane did, indeed, crash with 116 people aboard. Lets head out to the netherlands right now. Bittersweet emotions and a gutwrenching sadness are washing over them again today as the dutch people welcome the return of more victims from the crashed Malaysian Airliner. One day after a national outpouring of grief, dozens more coffins are arriving. Most of the 298 people as you know killed in the apparent missile strike were from the netherlands, although you see those flags flying in honor of the many nationalities that were on board that flight. Nick peyton walsh is in kharkiv, ukraine, where the journey began a few hours ago. Good morning. Carol, thank you. Today is the second time in which military cargo planes, again today, a dutch c13, have taken off from kharkiv with tragic cargo inside. Yesterday, 40. They will be met today in the netherlands by hearse that will mark on a solemn procession towards the military base where forensic testing will begin. But still, here in ukraine, where there are many dutch experts, over 60, and australians, too, all working on this investigation, theyre all hoping to get their job done as quickly as possible, hoping that perhaps the last flights can take off tomorrow, and that maybe then all the coffins will be in the netherlands and identification and forensic testing can occur. The real problem they face, though, is that they dont quite know whats on that. Theyve gone through the first three out of four refrigerated ones and are piecing through whats remaining there. A number of body bags yet specified and sometimes more than one body bag goes into a coffin. They are simply trying to remove the remains as fast as possible and the question will remain until dutch experts and other Forensic Experts can get their hands on these coffins and begin the complex, hightech work of dna testing, only then can they begin to know how many human souls were passed through on that refrigerate train from separatestheld territory to the experts here in kharkiv two days ago. A tragic process, relatives still wait to an end and shows you how devastating that blast was that took mh17 out of the sky and how widespread the wreckage is. Many concerns there will be complications getting further access. There are 50 australian Police Officers on their way to london, perhaps on their way to kiev to try to comb through. The representative of the australian Prime Minister he wants to get access this afternoon within an area thats an active, live war zone. Many are concerned that even if they do secure the site, it could be complex around it, to have a meaningful effect. The fear for many investigators, at the end of the day, no matter how hard they work their results will end up being inconclusive because the site has been tampered with and the devastation caused to the flight. Nick peyton walsh. The next hour of cnn newsroom starts now. This is cnn breaking news. Good morning to you. Im carol costello. Thank you for joining me. We do start this hour with breaking news, a freelance journalist working with cnn has been abducted in ukraine by prorussian rebels. This is anton skiba. He was taken by armed men outside of a hotel in donestk. And we are publicly askings those rebels, release him now, please. Our Senior International correspondent ivan watson is live in donestk to tell us more about his abduction. Good morning. Good morning, carol. Thats right cnn was not reporting on anton skibas detention because we were working behind the scenes with separatist officials trying to secure the young mans release. He had worked for cnn all of one day as we describe it in the industry here as a fixer, a kind of translator and guide to this region. What happened
