Today the u. K. Said it will start enhanced screening at its main ports of entry. You have heathrow and the railway terminals. Here with more on airport screenings our guests join us. Jim, just beginning with you. U. K. S as we were saying going that extra mile using medical personnel in the passenger screenings. Explain that. Exactly. What they decided to do is not have normal people who check your pass poport when you arrivt the airport. They decided to have medical personnel to also do the screening. They are talking about doing a history where have you been . How do you feel . And they want to know where youre going to go. They want to track these people. We know that ebola doesnt necessarily present right away. It could take days and days. Some people may come here feeling okay. They feel worse later. They want to track you. And if they feel that there is somebody that has a medical condition, they want to be able to assess you right away. To you at dulles, what does what they are doing in the u. K. Compare to what the u. S. Is doing . Reporter we know here and four other major airports the situation is that customs officers will be on the front lines. They will be the ones taking the temperatures. They will be the ones observing passengers flying from these three countries to see if by some chance they observe any symptoms. At that point if a customs officer notices something, thats when cdc, a medical professional, will step in and escort that person to a quarantine unit. Sounds like in the u. K. The medical professionals will be on the front lines. We do know here the first line of defense is going to be the custom officers. Brooke . Okay. Thank you so much. As we talk about ebola, which we have been doing for months and months, what does it really look like . Let me show you this rare look at the front lines of this fight against this virus. Through a head mounted camera youll see doctors and nurses showing cnn this heart wrenching battle to keep ebola patients alive. These patients youre about to see are in a highrisk zone at one of liberias state run ebola centers. Liberia has been hit the worst with cases of ebola. More than 2,000 have died. And cnn had access into this ebola ward and heres what she saw. Blood spattered and limp. Too weak to hold up his head. The nurse agreeing to wearing a camera to give us a glimpse of the bleak reality he witnesses daily. Here at this government run treatment center. Today the nurse managed to get this patient to drink water. Its a small victory. For the last few months, the team has won their protective suits in unbearable heat, walking the high risk wards to tend to the patients in their care. Life in rough and then you die. What else can we do . If we dont do it, who will do it for us . We have to take the risk and care for the patients or else our country will be wiped away. Its highly dangerous. So many patients in agony and people are crying in pain and some are dying and some need help. Some patients cannot go any longer and some parents you cannot do anything for them. They are dying. You watch them die. Sometimes you pray for them and do the little, you hope that something miraculous happens. Reporter the doctor got one days training before going into these wards and says thats typical here. In a health care system, struggling to cope, do you what you need to to survive. The nurse forgets a camera for a moment and begins to hymn to himself. A comfort amidst of the grimness. An ambulance has arrived bringing more patients. It begins again. There is no room so the stretcher goes on the floor for now. Next to a mattress where another critical patient lies. Here there are two patients for every bed. It is unimaginably unrelenting. But there are the success stories. Thats what sustains the staff. Patients spot the camera and begin to wave. They are recovering and maybe going home soon but for the staff, theres no end in sight. What happens when you go home at the end of the day . I get prepared for another day. Another day and another day. Until their prayers are finally answered. Thank you so much. Not this. Okay. Da when it comes to taking out isis, many can agree that Ground Troops are necessary but whose troops . The chairman of the House Armed ServicesCommittee Say it will take american boots to defeat isis. Two months into this air attack, its obviously not working. This strategy is not working. Isil continues to get stronger on a day by day basis. This could draw into a much bigger war. The longer we wait, the harder its going to get. Our military commanders, chairman of the joint chiefs dempsey, general austin, the aerial commander, laid out scenarios where we need more troops. If we dont put boots on the ground, we cant form the coalition and retake ground that needs to be taken and held. Right now weve been covering the city right on turkish Syrian Border of kobani. Isis fighters are inside controlling a third of the city that straddles that border. Turkeys foreign minister says it was not realistic to expect his country to conduct a military ground operation on its own. Let me bring in jim sciutto. We know the man heading the u. S. Led fight against isis retired general john allen meeting with members of this fight including arab league secretarygeneral. What are they discussing . You and i talked the president was at the pentagon this time yesterday. Is it drastic changes in strategy . Getting Additional Support . Whats going on . No drastic changes in strategy. The pentagon, the administration appears happy with how things are going and they say its meeting the goals as defined. I think theres been some if not redefinition, clarification of what those goals are. One of them being the u. S. Is not in the business and coalition not in the business of protecting towns like kobani. Warnings that kobani and other cities in syria may fall. If they do, u. S. Officials telling me thats not part of the war plan. Its more about putting pressure on isis from the air. Different story in iraq. I think the key now to this trip to the middle east for someone like allen and you also have the president s point man on iraq talking to the turks, et cetera. Its trying to figure out how to get turkey involved. Its a nato ally. At this point still disagreement between the u. S. And turkey and others about what turkey can and will be able to do. So then theres the other part of this story which we discussed which is how isis is trying to recruit westerners to radicalize themselves and join the fight. We showed a picture of this masked isis militant. Fbi wants the publics help in identifying them. Here he is again. Were here in the 17th Division Military base and were here with the soldiers of bashar al assad. The fbi says they have a lot of tips. What do we know beyond that . Hundreds of tips were told. Its not entirely unprecedented for the fbi to go out to the public. They did it with the boston bomber. I think the fact that they are doing this now shows how seriously they are tracking westerners who are involved in isis. This is a real concern. Theyve been trying to identify him for a number of weeks since that video first aired. They have not been able to. Now they are going out to the public. It shows that seriousness and difficulty of tracking these folks down but it shows that they are dedicating a lot of resources to this. As we have talked about many times, a worry is what do these fighters do if they attempt to return home. Thats a real concern of intelligence officials. Jim sciutto, thank you very much. And as far as isis is concerned, their m. O. Seems to be behead one hostage and show the next. And knowing her son is likely the next here, this indiana mother has resorted to tweeting his captors directly. Let me show you her tweet. Im trying to get in touch with the Islamic State about my sons fate. Im an old woman and peter kassig is my only child. My husband and i are on our own with no help from the government. We would like to talk to you. How can we reach you . All of this playing out over social media. Let me bring in a psychotherapist and author of until death do us part. Nice to have you on. Just reading the succession of tweets, talking about being an older mother, government not helping, shes desperate. Can you blame her . You can hear her desperation. Its her only child. As a mother you want to do whatever you can to protect your child. Im sure shes having so many mixed emotions right now feeling hopeless that anything she does will have any positive impact. Hopeful that perhaps this plea might help. Im sure she feels like time has stopped for her and is in a state of disbelief because this is almost like a movie. Its beyond what is normal and beyond what is a part of most peoples reality. Its traumatic for her. It is surreal. Its real. I wonder for a mother back here seeming so disconnected seeing what has happened to these other men in these videos and now realizing this could become her sons fate. Right. At least she can tell herself shes done everything she can do to try to protect her son. That is the good side. And also that this is not her fault. You know, she raised a son who felt passionate about his work and he just landed in a place that was very, very dangerous. Theres nothing she could do to protect him really but the problem here is just like families who have people who have been murdered, they imagine the final moments of their childs life. It goes through their mind and thats what makes the grieving process so painful. Shes not there yet but im sure those scenarios are playing out in her mind. Horrendous. Absolutely who ahorrendous. Coming up, the man who headed the marine corps has some pretty strong words about president obamas strategy against isis and he apparently recently said it doesnt have a snow ball chance in hell of succeeding. Hell join me live on set to explain what he thinks the president should do. A major announcement about malaysian flight 17. There is word one of the passengers onboard was found wearing an oxygen mask. What does that mean . Well talk to an aviation expert coming up. We asked people a question how much money do you think youll need when you retire . Then we gave each person a ribbon to show how many years that amount might last. I was trying to like, pull it a little further got me to 70 years old im going to have to rethink this thing its hard to imagine how much well need for a retirement that could last 30 years or more. So maybe we need to approach things differently, if we want to be ready for a longer retirement. They all lost their lives because of preventable medical errors, now the third leading cause of death. Safeguards against Prescription Drug abuse. And holds the medical industry accountable for mistakes. Im barbara boxer. Lets save lives. Vote yes on 46. The Dutch Foreign minister made a startling revelation about one passenger onboard that Malaysian Air flight 17 plane that crashed in ukraine. I want you to hear what he said last night on a dutch talk show. Translator they did not see the missile coming but you know that someone was found with an oxygen mask over his mouth . So he had time to do that . You heard him just to reiterate. One victim found wearing an oxygen mask. Dutch prosecutors confirmed what he revealed and that would mean its possible that at least one passenger had the time and where with all to react to a loss of cabin pressure with those oxygen masks dropping down. Its believed this plane was hit by a missile launched from this area controlled by prorussian separatists. Its also been thought that all 298 people onboard died instantly. So this changes that. The talk show host was pressing that fact with the Dutch Foreign minister who in july got a lot of heat for this comment he made before the u. N. Security council. How horrible it must have been, the final moments of their lives, when they knew the plane was going down. Did they lock hands with their loved ones . Did they hold their children close to their hearts . Did they look each other in the eyes one final time in a wordless goodbye. David, let me bring you in to talk about this. When you heard that this man was found wearing this oxygen mask, what did you think . Well, when i just learned that and i did learn it just wednesday, i hadnt heard this before either and ive been scouring the reports. Its not been reporting to the family or anyone else until he decided to state that. But what it does state to me is that unless it had been tampered with on the scene, which i dont think thats a very good probability, but the fact is if there was oxygen masks on the passenger, it does suspect to me there were people that survived the initial impact of that missile. So then, david, how long between the point presumably when this missile hit this Malaysian Aircraft and the time it crashed in eastern ukraine, how much time do you think they would have had and for someone to have thought to grab the mask and put it on him or herself . Well, the mask being donned can happen almost instantaneo instantaneously. Now, understand that youre at 40,000 feet. 40 below zero. Traveling at 40 miles an hour. If you did survive the original impact and then the aircraft broke up, you would not survive that type of environment for very long. It would have only been a minute or two at the moment. By the time the aircraft hit the ground, it wasnt as if they suffered all of the way down as though he was implying on his first statement back in july which was overly dramatic and certainly unnecessary causing a lot of additional pain for the family members. Just back to a point you made a minute ago that you dont think the oxygen masks or body would have been tampered with but correct me. When we covered this for weeks and weeks, the crash site was in the middle of a war zone and there are people and bodies missing that some items were stolen. Iphones, items out of suitcases, you dont think its possible a mask could have been placed on a body once it hit the ground . Of course its possible. I just cant see the logic in it. Most of the people that were there were trying to take things away. I wouldnt imagine why they would have put an oxygen mask on a person that had already deceased. Its within the realm of responsibility but no logic behind where they would put it on. I would say it more likely it was on the person at the time of the missile. I appreciate it. Now back to air strikes. No u. S. Boots on the ground, right . Thats been president obamas isis strategy thus far to try to destroy and dismantle this terrorist group. My next guest says that strategy doesnt have a snowballs chance in hell of succeeding. The former leader of the marine corps will explain next. Im brooke baldwin. This increasing number of high profile voices now are chiming in on the president s strategy against isis. Their words at times can be harsh. Blasting the president s Foreign Policy for setting the stage for isis. Slamming his no Ground Troops pledge and you have former members of obamas own administration, former secretary of state Hillary Clinton, exdefense secretary robert gates, and most recently here, obamas foreign defense secretary and cia director leon panetta and former president jimmy carter. Let me add one more name to the list here who will have an opportunity to expand on his thoughts. General james conway. General, welcome. Nice to have you here. Good to be aboard. This is a quote heard all around the world. You can elaborate. You recently were at a political conference saying that the president s isis strategy doesnt have a snowballs chance in hell of succeeding. Those are harsh words, sir. What do you mean by that . I appreciate the chance to elaborate quite frankly. The question was asked about the administrations overall strategy and my comments actually were that in iraq, i think theres as much as a 60 probability that the concept can succeed because you have a new government thats all inclusive. You have the refurbished Iraqi Military and buddies in Anbar Province, you have elements for potential success with troops on the ground and american air support in iraq. My contrast was syria where none of those things exist so at this point with the program as i understand it and such as it is, i would defer the colorful language but say probabilities havent changed for success in syria. Given the state of affairs in syria that we dont have Iraqi Security forces and peshmerga there, how would you change the strategy . I think strategy has to evolve. Its a good scenario that the turks are going to engage potentially. You have to have troops on the ground if youre going to have Successful Air strikes. Troops who understand the process. Who would that be . It can be i read this morning australians may be coming into iraq. They certainly have done it before with us. Iraqis can be trained. Its not a complicated process. Its just that you have the equipment and the understanding. Its always best certainly if we enjoy that advantage in the marine corps. Do you think americans are necessary in syria on the ground . Ultimately to be successful, yes. And the reason for that is there are two types of air strikes. One is preplanned. Where you generate intelligence and identify the targets and you build a package and you go hit that target under whatever priority list is established. You dont need troops on the ground necessarily to do that. The other type is immediate air strikes. And there you commit aircraft to a pattern over the battlefield, put them in a stack, but they are called down as required by the troops in contact. They identify the target. They identify the potential for civilian casualties. You have to be concerned about that when you drop bombs. They provide a target mark. And they coordinate the actual strike. And if youre not doing that, you are relegated to what were seeing today which is largely armed reconnaissance which means you load up bombs and search for a target and look for isis guys doing jumping jacks in the open somewhere and probability there is not real great. Thats the difference in terms of what we have at work right now and i would just offer that there has to be a man in the loop. Speaking english and talking to pilots if theyre american pilots. A man in the loop on the ground. All right. Thats interesting. Recently hearing from leon panetta talking to Gloria Borger had praise for the president but sort of saying he arrives at his decisions and takes him a little while to arrive. Youve sat with you have been a member of the top brass as it were sitting around these big tables closed door meetings watching the president and seeing it churn, what does it look like, his thought process and what do you think of it . I worked two years with president obama and two years with president bush and they are distinctly different in terms of input and output. The things i observed under president obama is that hes a good listener. He seems to absorb it all. He might have a little bit of a different cast of people in the room from president bush but thats fine. And frankly we didnt receive decisions at those points where we were in the tank with the president. We visited a couple times in the white house and once again it seemed to me there was great deal of absorption and penetrating questions on what we may be offering in terms of best military advice but decisions were made at a little later point in time. How would he react if you were to speak up and disagree with a strategy . That was our job. To disagree with the president . Once a decision is made, you do not disagree. In the discussion, joint staff believe me do not always have the same recommendation to the president on critical issues. Thats why we do it in private and behind closed doors. But during those periods of discussion it was your individual responsibility to speak your opinion and voice your experiences. I thought he received those very well. I mean, i think in the end thats very good for him to hear those things because it gives him the diversification of opinion and it sort of searches out various aspects of what has to be some tough decisions to make. You know, hearing from Hillary Clinton shes been critical recently but it was just last night she said, i believe her words were isis is more powerful than al qaeda. Do you agree with that . Certainly more brutal. Whats the difference . Well, al qaeda was brutal. But isis has turned it into an art form and they have played it on International Airwaves and media to the degree that i think people are just repulsed by what they see. Isis in my mind is al qaeda of iraq revisited with a lot of Lessons Learned in their backpack. To strengthen them to make them more sophisticated . You can overstep it with local tribes which they did in iraq and that caused sunnis to rise up and take them out. So i think theyre going to be more careful with that this time. I think i honestly think they made a strategic mistake. Who is they . Isis. In going conventional as soon as they have. They have probably found some unexpected success in the sunni areas because again my personal opinion is that sunnis kind of use them to send a message to the maliki government that you mistreated us for eight years and this is what can happen. Right now i see that theres a clash between isis and sunni tribal chiefs and Anbar Province in particular as these guys consolidate caliphate, they dont want people that dont buy into their rhythms. You talk about Anbar Province and makes me think of baghdad. Do you worry at all about baghdad falling . I dont worry about baghdad falling. I think that they are within range of Baghdad International and theyll demonstrate they can put a mortar round on the airfield from time to time. I think it has a lot to do with International Media attention. Secretary kerry suggesting it was close. They are closer than we would like them to be but i dont think they have combat power to take baghdad. I dont think they have combat power to get in the south where the shiite oil fields are around basra to take those oil fields. My conjecture at this point is that they have about shot their bullet. They have about climaxed into what they can take in terms of ground notwithstanding places in Anbar Province further to the west but i dont think they have combat power to go farther so consolidating what they have gained is more likely action in the coming weeks and months. Looping all of the way back to your point about ultimately there may be a need to have this american voice on the ground to communicate and to be integral in this dismantling and destroying of isis but i go back to the majority of americans, 73 of americans say they favor the air strikes. 60 oppose sending in Ground Combat troops. I know it is the president s job to be the commander in chief to lead. What message, if he ultimately decides to send in those troops, what message is he sending to america who at the moment is not interested in that . Brooke, i would say two or three things. One, he sends a message i hear you, my fellow citizens, i am in this office to lead and im going to do that. Secondly, he can tell them that when you declare war against another nation or in this case a nonstate actor, you go to war to win to accomplish your intended mission and if i were advising the president today, i would say to him, sir, your best bet here is to tell us what it is you want to accomplish. Give us the mission. Tell us what you want it to look like in terms of in state and give us your commander in chiefs guidance you want to maximize american airpower but minimize the number of Ground Troops that are in play and then let your commanders come back to you and tell you what that needs to look like. I would like to think if the president can tell our countrymen this is what my military experts tell me is necessary to win this fight, then i think its easier for him to accept what may be criticisms from certain parties but this is real and serious and weve got to win this thing. General james conway, thank you, sir, so much. Thank you for your service to our country as well. I really appreciate that. Hes 18 years of age. Africanamerican. His foster family is white. And Police Say Officers had to pepper spray him after he became aggressive. They entered the home after someone called 911 about a suspicious person. Take a listen. Im seeing a suspicious person Walking Around in my neighbors yard. A black kid with what looks like dreadlocks. He walked down beinsiside the h. Looked like he may have walked inside the house. Dont know that for sure. Did Police Believe curry . He walked into the home because its his home. This happened monday afternoon in a town just outside raleigh in north carolina. Police, three officers, walk up to this home. At least one with his gun drawn and down the stairs comes this 18 year old who says what are you doing in my home . Why you ware you here . They ask him where do you live . I live here. They frisk him and take his i. D. But the i. D. Does not match the address at the home because they just moved there two months prior. And one officer says that he became aggressive when questioning went on. He even says he started to get angry. According to the Police Report he cursed at them and said he would hit them. When they tried to cuff this teenager, he swung his hands away and jerked away and his arm hit the officer and thats when they pepper sprayed him. One officer actually says he looked at the pictures on the mantel and didnt see him there. Listen to him and his mother and their reaction to what happened. Really . Because im black, you know . The kids are white. You believe i dont stay here because of some pictures on the wall . My 5 year old didnt understand why they hated him and wanted to hurt him. My husband had nightmares the first night about having to fight the police off for being in the wrong house. So what are police saying . How are they responding . Initially they released a short statement but as this got more attention, they now released an extended statement. I have a portion of it. The Police Department does not engage in nor condone racial profiling. At no time during this event was race a factor. The Police Department responded to a call from a concerned resident of england avenue who had not previously seen mr. Curry at this home. They say race wasnt a factor for them, it was for the person who called police because according to the reports, this neighbor said he knew that a white family with small children lived there but he had never observed a black male at the residence and he was concerned for his neighbors of the recent car thefts and burglaries in the community. Victor blackwell, thank you very much. Coming up, weve got new information on that fight involving the palins from last month. So now were getting our first look at the Police Report which has a lot of details on what happened and what sarah palin did right after punches were thrown. Thats next. Not to be focusing, again, on my moderate my goal was to finally get in shape. To severe chronic plaque psoriasis. So i finally made a decision to talk to my dermatologist about humira. Humira works inside my body to target and help block a specific source of inflammation that contributes to my symptoms. In clinical trials, most adults with moderate to Severe Plaque Psoriasis saw 75 skin clearance on humira. And the majority of people were clear or almost clear in just 4 months. Humira can lower your ability to fight infections, including tuberculosis. Serious, sometimes fatal infections and cancers, including lymphoma, have happened; as have blood, liver, and nervous system problems, serious allergic reactions, and new or worsening heart failure. Before treatment, get tested for tb. Tell your doctor if youve been to areas where certain fungal infections are common, and if youve had tb, hepatitis b, are prone to infections, or have flulike symptoms or sores. Dont start humira if you have an infection. Set a new goal today. Ask your dermatologist about humira. Because with humira clearer skin is possible. We have some new details today involving the socalled palin family brawl. It happened last month. Police were called to this party that sarah palins family attended. This fight broke out and apparently involved the palins and included sarah palin herself. Now, flash forward, we now have the details what happened that night. So, joe johns, let me bring you in. Lets look at the charges. First, let me say, its like a series of statements that they put out. And according to anchorage Police Department, there will be no charges filed, brooke, pertaining to this incident at a house party that the palins attended in september. The case is now considered closed and anchorage Police Department has basically released a report of the brawl. People who were there included todd palin, his children, trap, bristol, and willow. Sarah was present but stayed out of the action trying to get it under control. How did it get started . Not entirely clear. But willow palin claims that an older lady pushed her and bristol went toward the woman to confront her about pushing her sister and then Bristol Palin got pushed to the ground by the owner of the house and was called a slut and dragged around the grass by her feet. According to the owner of the house, its a different scenario. He says he tried to keep a fight from breaking out and he went as far as to let Bristol Palin hit him in the house five or six times and after the sixth punch or so, he grabbed her fists and she fell down. He said three or four guys came after him saying that they were going to beat him up. A fight broke out and the palins end up losing the fight. Todd palin was on the receiving end of some of this, also, and apparently had people piling on him before his son came to the rescue. Difficult to describe all the details of a melee. However, it seems clear that authorities are saying no charges will be filed. Authorities say this apparently was alcoholrelated. Yikes. Joe johns, thank you.
