Driving in Different Directions all at once. You cant accomplish what you could accomplish if you had a consistent mission by all parties involved. You are already seeing it right now with something as simple as United States and the russian in terms of air strikes. Now lets multiply that and find out what it takes when you put boots on the ground. It changes dramatically what can happen. By the way, if things dont play out well, lets be leer about this, people die. Its all well and good to talk about this and generals that want to sit around and flex their muscles and talk about how tough we are, but those are the guys that arent coming back in body bags. You end up at war in a country that you could pretend the problem is lets take a look. Im not suggesting that the russians and the turks are going to go to war. Theyre not. The problem is you dont know how does will if you dont contemplate all of the vacuum that he created in places like iraq. Look at the vacuum that we created in plays like afghanistan. It seems sometimes that we didnt really contemplate that, but we should have because the same thing happened to the russians when they pulled out here is the president. Thank you very much for your time. Good morning, everybody. I just had a chance to meet with my National Security team, including my secretary of Homeland Security, jay johnson, my fbi director, jim, and my attorney general lore elta lynch. For many of us the events there touched given the connection between the United States and france. The degree to which americans see in paris a way of life thats so familiar to us here in america, and given the shocking images, i know that americans have been asking each other where its safe here, whether its safe to fly. I know the families have discussed their fears about the threat of terrorism around the dinner table maybe for the First Time Since september 11th, and its understandable that people worry something similar could happen here. Watching the events in paris made the threat feel lowers to home. As we go into thanksgiving weekend, i want the American People to know that we are taking every possible step to keep our homeland safe. First, were going after isil wherever it hides. Thats been our strategy for more than a year. Ill speak about this in more detail in the coming weeks, but let me remind the American People of what our coalition of some 65 nations is doing to destroy these terrorists and defeat their ideology. So far our military and our partners have conducted more than 8,000 air strikes on isils strongholds and equipment. Those air strikes along with the efforts of our partners on the ground have taken out key leaders, have taken back territory from isil in both iraq and syria. We continue to work to choke off their financing and their supply lines and counter their recruitment and their messaging. Even as america is already supporting french air strikes in syria, yesterday president hollande and i agreed that our countries are going to step up that coordination even further and do more of that work together. So were stepping up the pressure on isil where it lives, and we will not let up. Adjusting our tactics until necessary until they are beaten. Thats our first goal. Second, we continue to do Everything Possible to prevent attacks at home and abroad and to prevent foreign terrorist fighters from entering the United States or other nations. Since 9 11, weve taken extraordinary measures to strengthen our Homeland Security in everything from Aviation Security to border security, to information sharing. Any time theres an event, we learn something from it. We continue to improve upon our approaches as we speak. Now, right now we know of no specific and credible intelligence indicating a plot on the homeland and that is based on the latest information i just received in the situation room. It is similar to the information that i the briefing that i received on saturday before i left on my trip last week. So as americans travel this weekend to be with their loved ones, i want them to know that our counterterrorism, intelligence, Homeland Security and Law Enforcement professionals at every level are working overtime. They are continually monitoring threats at home and abroad. Continually evaluating our security posture. Theyre constantly working to protect all of us. Their work has prevented attacks. Their efforts have saved lives. They serve every hour of every day for the sake of our security. They did so before pair sxishgs they do so now. Without fanfare or credit and without a break for the holidays. I want people to know entering the holidays that the combined resources for our military, our intelligence, and our Homeland Security agencies are on the case. Theyre vigilant, relentless, and effective. In the event a credible threat, the public will be informed. We do think its useful for people as theyre going about their business to be vigilant. If you see something suspicious, Say Something. Thats always helpful. But, otherwise, americans should go about their usual thanksgiving weekend activities. Spending time with family and friends and celebrating our blessings. While the threat of terrorism is a troubling reality of our age, we are both equipped to prevent attacks and we are resilient in the face of those who will try to do us harm. Thats something we can all be thankful for. Happy thanksgiving, everybody. That was president obama there from the white house following what he called a regular update from his National Security team. The president saying that we are taking every possible step to keep the homeland safe, that there is no specific threat or intelligence about an attack on the homeland. It does come as 25 Million People are expected to fly this weekend for the thanksgiving holiday. Millions shopping around this country, millions on the roads, across america for the thanksgiving holiday. John harwood, live with us today from the white house. John, he knows that the American Public remains nervous following the attacks in paris and that video that surfaced showing pictures of times square as there will be millions of people in new york city for the macys thanksgiving day parade as well. No question, and thats why the president came out today. He acknowledged the concern that millions of americans have about safety in the wake of paris and the subsequent attacks in mali and the keywords were the ones that you highlighted in the beginning. Working overtime, taking every possible step, working 24 hours a day, no holiday break, no credible specific threat. He told americans that if he got a specific credible threat, he would inform the American Public, so its a way to try to make sure that people remain have their concerns under control. He said keep vigilant. You see something, Say Something. This was a message of reassurance through and through, and he touched on their strategy overseas going after isis, but also the strategy here in the homeland, and he is hoping that people can have a comfortable Holiday Season without worrying too much about it. Sure. What do you think it will take for the president to commit to Ground Troops to fight isis, and i wonder in some respects whether some of that pressure was taken off by the french president yesterday, Francois Hollande saying he wasnt ready to do so even in the wake of what happened in paris. You are right about that scott. I think its going to take a lot more than has occurred so far. Not just the president , but most of those running for president he hadz to hope that the American People are going to be enough for him to sustain that for the rest of his term. John, we appreciate it very much. John harwood on the north lun. Well see ow the other side of that holiday. Thank you so much. Were going to take a quick break and follow the markets action, of course, today. Take a look as well as shares of hp and the new Hp Enterprises are both on the move. Is meg whitman getting enough scrutiny . Is march yeas myer of yahoo getting too much . Well discuss that and so much more after this break. Five years ago, on any given night, you know, almost 75,000 veterans experienced homelessness. We have reduced those numbers by almost half, but despite the great progress that we have achieved, there are still too many veterans who still need a place to live. This project is a comprehensive rehabilitation of the centers facility here in Downtown Boston to create permanent supportive housing, transitional housing and service spaces, a facility that really delivers on societys commitment to people who have served in the military. CitiĀ® was the Financial Partner because they were able to come with the resources, both the Capital Resources and also the human resources, the experts in their fields, and without citis partnership we probably would not be in construction right now. The goal for us in this project is to be more effective in the services that we provide so that veterans who have committed to put their lives at risk to protect this country have a home in this country. We are back. Thats how the market picture looks. Yes, we are higher across the board. Modest gains with the dow up nearly 23 points. As investors and that Economic Data today gearing up for the thanksgiving getaway, of course, and black friday. Want to zero in on shares of hp ink and Hp Enterprises. The two Companies Formed by this years split of hewlettpackard, and both giving weak guidance. Stocks are on the move. Very Different Directions. It was a tough pc market, but hp inc. Prepared very well. Gained share in virtually every category. Had the highest alltime share they had in the commercial pc segment for a long time, which is the more profitable segment of that business. Can hp turn itself around . We have john fort joining us. To you first, when you hear meg whitman, if you are an investor in hp, what are you hearing today . Of course, not being an investor, im not exactly sure, but i tell you, i look at Hp Enterprise. Its obviously got a single category where Hp Enterprise absolutely controls its destiny. You look at Industry Standard servers. Thats been going okay. Now you have the server business separated from the business, and its unclear how the cost of economics of that are going to go forward. Network is going better than it was. Hp, the size that its networking business is you hope that it would be growing faster versus the likes of a cisco or a juniper. Go on to services to security as down the line. Its a bit of a different beast. If are you looking at the pressures on whitman versus the pressure on hp you know, john, what the issue is we are looking at those, but in the context of you have yahoo shares are down 35 yeartodate. You have hp down 30 . Hp as a combined Company Revenues down declining in 16 of 17 quarters. Yet, it seems like every week were having a conversation on whether marissa myer is the right ceo for the job, whether she needs to go, and, yet, it would appear as though investors seem more willing to give meg whitman a hands to turn things around. Is that the correct perception, do you think, and if so, is it the wrong one to have . I think it is, scott. I think part of the reason where is hp already tried a bunch of the stuff that investors are hoping that yahoo will. For example, youll remember back in 2011 hp really looked at selling off the pc business. There are rumors about all sorts of potential suitors in asia looking at it and taking a pass. Yahoo hasnt really tried to sell the core business at wrau hue, which is what some activists would like hem it do, and then you have the legacy of that 2008 attempted buyout from microsoft and then for a while there when ali bauba was first getting ready to ipo, people said, well, good thing that didnt go through because look at all these alibaba shares yahoo has got. Now that separation is about to happen, people are looking back saying, you know, you mean i could have microsoft in the mid 20s . Maybe yahoo hasnt tried hard enough to take the opportunities that theyve had. Hewlettpackard is the split doesnt change much because if you combine the earnings of the two companies, and you go by public estimates, they missed on the whole. Its another miss. It doesnt matter if they missed in two pieces, and then when you look at personal computing systems or whatever theyre calling their unit now, theyve spent a ton of money in the last year on advertising, on adding new services. In the meantime, printing is down 14 . Pcs are down another 14 . Its a black hole. Can you spend all the money you want, so i think, yeah, probably there should be some more scrutiny of whats going on with the company, but the real issue is both of these companies are in industries that are in secular decline, and nobody wants to admit it, but thats actually whats happening. Wrau hue is the phone book, and hewlettpackard is selling beige boxes, and you cant change that. It doesnt matter who the ceo is. Doc, what stock would you buy based on the story that each is telling . You have to make a decision on which story and which storyteller you believe more . Well, and the storyteller i believe more is, of course, meg whitman. I mean, the reason here for that is dreamworks, ebay, procter gamble, disney. I mean, shes got the chops. Marissa mayer, brilliant woman, and they brought her in because shes significantly younger because they thought she could reinvigorate yahoo. I think they got the wrong ceo. If you flip these around, judge, you auto would still have hewlettpackard town this had much because ibm has been done this much. That sector in a decline. However, i disagree with josh as far as even though he said here in the phone book. Theyre a Search Engine as well as display whatever the heck the answers i got back is hp it is a more established business model. The stock pays a dividend versus yahoo in a core business with no plan. Another person said let me finish. Theres a perception that whitman is doing something and has a plan while yahoo seems like they dont know what to do. Exactly. Its really important that we bring in the personal things that are happening here because meg whitman did not have the company spend 6 million to attend a gala at the metropolitan or whatever at Lincoln Center for the costume ball and harj it to the company because it might be good for yahoo fashion. Meg whitman did not bring in people and then fire them a year later giving them 150 million out the door. I do think there are bigger execution problems at yahoo. Much bigger than at hp. They originally wanted this whole thing to spin off, right . They wanted to get rid of alibaba and see what the core business looks like. Now that they have a hands to sit back and look and see what it is, now they dont want that. Now they want it to stay together. That says a lot about what the core business, the display business, search business is right now. I think in terms of meg. Its notes focused on yahoo why wr all this money and everybody wants to leave the ship. Thats been an amazing story. To your point, meg said were going to build shareholder value. This is how were going to do it. She didnt change the strategy. This is a new strategy atta hue every since months. Were a media company. Were back to tech. Now were mobile and all about social. Whoco even keep track. From that standpoint, meg deserves some credit for saying this is what were going to do, and shes actually executing it. The street doesnt love it yet, but its not bipolar. I think the expectation is coming in for Marissa Mayer were much higher than the expectations from meg whitman, and when you look at the inefficiencies of both ceos, you have to first understand that for yahoo, you are talking about a ceo who probably understands the product but doesnt understand the management as well of the balance sheet. Then you look at meg whitman. Here is someone, he points out ebay, points out disney, who clearly understands the balance sheet, understands financial engineering, but i dont know necessarily if she understands the product. Thats why youre not getting the premium for either, and wills no excitement around buying the stock and nothing that you witness today from hp. It may be part of the issue too, and lets make this the last point. One, in meg whitman, communicates often with investors, and she does that every quarter exclusively with david faber on this very network when you dont often hear from marissa myer in that kind of a forum if ever so maybe the message is either misunderstood or just isnt even known for that very reason. Coming up, keurig green mountain, the best performing stock in the s p today. Its also up 30 this week. Makes sense with a bullish move coming up. Wow, 29 shopping days left until christmas. Will black friday save the retail trade . The Holiday Travel rush is on today. Phil lebeau is in the center of how united is trying to make it go as smoothly as possible. Phil. The good news for not just unite but all the airlines. Its off to a smooth start in what will be a huge weekend when it comes to travel here in the United States. Whats it like to handle over 4,700 flights . Were live in the United Operations Center when the Halftime Report returns. Hi watson. Annabelle, your birthday is tomorrow. Im turning seven. What did you ask for . A princess. And a pony. You like things that begin with p. I like pink frosting too. Will you have a cake . Yeah. I was too sick to have one last year. The data your doctor shared shows you are healthy. Are you a doctor . No. I help doctors identify cancer treatments. I want to be a doctor someday. I can help with that too. Watson, i like you. Were back. One of the busiest travel days of the year. Well underway at this hour. With more than 25 Million People expected to fly this holiday weekend. Nbcs jacob is at l. A. X. Following the rush there. Our phil lebeau is in uniteds Operation Center in chicago. Phil, we begin with you. The good news here is that its a smooth start to the Holiday Travel weekend. When you look at how many people are going to be flying away were expecting smooth travel is really what we need here. There are no delays that were seeing in manufacture the airports around the country right now. Yes, were seeing long lines, but thats a factor of having people that are flying today and over the next three or four days. This is the busiest thanksgiving travel sten season since 2006, ands as a result a number of years, including united, theyre adding flights. Primarily on saturday and sunday. United in particular, this is really interesting. Theyre adding more red eye flights. The overnight flights. Its adding red eye flights to denver, chicago, and in houston. Customers are more savvy in traveling, and they really want to expand the time in the holiday they have with their family and friends. It gives another option. You know, hopefully you get a little sleep on the plane too, but then when you get back, you are rested from the holidays. While this will be the beginning of a season, not just for united, but all of the major carriers in the United States, look at the stocks. They have seen some cancellations, but a small number for the most part. Theyre still full going over there. The interesting thing will be what happens in two or three months. Do we start to see a falloff in bookings. Thats the reason the stocks have been you should pressure over the last four or five sessions. Back to you. Phil, thanks so much. More than two million travel rerz expected to pass through l. A. X. In the thanksgiving holiday its dropping more than a foot of snow in some parts of the west. So far right now there are almost no delays. Travel is going very well, but airport officials are still cautioning people to show up two to three hours in advance depending on where you are going. Thats partly due to the increase in security. L. A. X. , of course, has been a target of attacks and threats over the years. The most recent in 2013 when a lone gunman opened fire inside terminal three. Today travellers will see increased security. Theyll see more patrol cars. Officers on motorcycle, more checkpoints, more bomb sniffing dogs, and even federal officers inside with automatic weapons. Jacob, thanks so much. Jacob of nbc for us at l. A. X. Pete. Thats the real question of what things like the state Department Just general concern about whats happening in the world has an bakt on the kind of stocks ultimately that you like to it certainly does. I still like these airline stocks. I like delta and united. Looks like america seems to be under the most pressure and not responded. You look at some of the domestic carriers as well. Jetblue, southwest have done extremely well. That thing has been on fire as well. Now, theres a little bit of pressure because of obviously this alert thats on or this warning. Because of that you look at the 50day moving averages and all three of the carriers have gone to the 50day moving avrmgz. In the case of delta and united, its just started yesterday. You like to see if they are getting back over or if the pressure gets back on because of the big reveal. Top analyst and the both weigh in on the crucial Holiday Season. Plus, the all mighty dollar. The greenback gets even stronger. Well give you the best ways to play it. Opportunities arent always obvious. Sometimes they just drop in. Cme group can help you navigate risks and capture opportunities. We enable you to reach Global Markets and drive forward with broader possibilities. Cme group how the world advances. Hello. Im sue herrera. Here is your cnbc news update. Moments ago president obama trying to reassure americans in the wake of the paris terror attacks. I want the American People to know entering the holidays that the combined resources of our military, our intelligence, and our Homeland Security agencies are on the case. Theyre vigilant, relentless, and effective. Comments to local media, the pilot of a downed russian fighter jet says he was gin no warnings before being fired upon, and also denied flying inside turkish airspace, but both of those claims are nato member turkey is denying. The fda has approved a new flu vaccine that is supposed to provide better protection for seniors. The stronger shot includes a compound that helps stimulate the persons immune system making it more effective. Take a look at this. A turkey walks into a church, possibly in search of some divine intervention. The turkey tried to get inside the sanctuary have st. Lukes church in orlando. Its now a social media sensation being shared over 22,000 times. That is one smart bird. A little later today the president is going to pardon the national turkey. Sfroo yep. All right, sue. Thanks. Youre welcome. No comeback on that, scottie, right . None. None is even necessary. I hate to ruffle your feathers. Very good. Very good. Happy thanksgiving, sue. You too. All right. Even the best laid plans can sometimes go awry. John spelled out his Retail Holiday trade back in august that he puts on every year. The trade seasonal trade into the discretionary buying period, which, of course, we know as black friday when we kick it off officially, but i think the time to buy, the seasonal time is now. These stocks tend to rise into that black friday time frame. Everybody looks at all the numbers, black friday, and says, oh, my god, time to be many. Time to be in is labor day. Okay. What do you do, though . It hasnt worked out all that well lately. No. A lot of concern about whats going on at the department stores, in the malls, and where the consumer is. Ill be there on friday to see exactly how it plays out right into that black friday, judge. As far as more channel checks. More channel checks. Exactly right. Ill be doing that. You better hope that im getting a present for you too. Maybe i will. Maybe i wont. Best buy was one that i put into halftime port foal wroe. Stock moved up almost 3 from the time i put it in. Didnt take it off. Pigs get fat rsh hogs get slaughtered. Had to get rid of this one at the earnings report. It was down, like, 4 i think from where i got in at that point. So i have no retail exposure directly right now. All right. Well, tomorrow does mark, as you all know by now, the official start of the Holiday Shopping season. Retailers certainly are hoping for the best this year. Steve is the former ceo of office depot and auto zone. Joe feldman follows the industry for the advisory group. Theyre live with us today on how all things holiday retail. Gentlemen, welcome. Mobile and online, and some fast fashion, and, of course, nonholiday related, but everything auto and Home Improvement is doing well. I think were going to see a margin bloodbath. Everything will run red as you get steep, steep discounts and a lot of competition here. Even before the holiday you see it. You know, the consumers are waiting for discounts up to 50 , and even in the preholiday period. It isnt going to be pretty. We know that amazon is going to be a big winner. Thats a given. The hard goods are doing well. I think its really that the malls and where there are going to be some pressure on the apparel side brsh if you think about target, amazon, even walmart, and best buy, i think theyre going to have good Holiday Seasons. Hast year the National Retail Federation Said right after black friday that sales would be down 1 year over year when the Commerce Department put out its final numbers. It was actually up 4 . I think most surveys are largely clueless. People do a really bad job of walking into a store and saying what they intend to spend, and actually getting it right, and master card says that habits have changed permanently, and december 23rd is a bigger shopping day than black friday. Should we basically take it way shovel full of salt . I they you have to take it with a grain of salt. I think weve seen the Holiday Season starting a lot before black friday. A lot of the deals are available today right now on the websites for a lot of best buy and target and macys and others. It is true the last ten days prior ahead of christmas, i should say, are actually the biggest shopping days of the year. Its been happening already. You can buy this stuff online. The door britney spearsers arent really as impactful as they used to be. Well see a change in the dynamic. As a former ceo in the room, what do you do, what do you think about when it comes to americans being nervous especially now because of terrorism . Joe is right. The National Retail federation has numbers throughout projecting 3. 7 . I think thats optimistic. I think you are going to see closer to flat to up 1 for bricks and mortar because partially because of what you have said and because its so easy to shop by a mobile. Youre the Millenial Generation thats now shopping via phone. The best developed web sites will show the best comps. You will see mobile comp that is will be i think in the high teens. I think youre going to see online in the high single digits. In the high inventories, any time you see a high inventory, it means theyve lost their numbers on the forecast. I think theyre going to have to clear this inventory. You know, its been a late winner. Theres going to be a margin whether or notted bath, and thats going to be a great consumer buying opportunity, but were training consumers to wait for the sale, unfortunately. Have a good thanksgiving. Its good to hear from you both. Up next, will 2016 finally be the year of the financials . Were going to debate a bullish call, and the clock is ticking in our halftime portfolio competition. Check out the leaderboard. Josh brown is now in the lead. Stephanie link just behind. Theres joe making up some ground this week as well. Jim, john, pete. Thats how the list looks now. Youre watching cnbc, first in business wordwide. Hello. Im maggie drury. Scotty. The dollar hitting an eightmonth high today, and briefly touching the 100 level. Jackie deangeles is at the nymex with the futures now. Weve been watching euro dollar, dollar versus a lot of other currency this is week. Jackie. We have, and it has a big impact on commodities. Thats why we care about it so much. The dollar index at its highest level since march 16th today. Jim, we had some strong Economic Data this morning. That has people looking at the december rate hike on the table here. How much greener can this greenback get, my friend . Well, okay. The Dollar Strength is really the euros weakness. Remember that the euro makes up half of the dollar index. Yes, i hi theres going to be a tightening, and i think it will be couched with very, very accommodative and dovish red rick. However, if the euro can rally today and finish strong, i think that is a big thing, and then i think the dollar softens, you know, accordingly going forward. Theres the euro theyre accommodative and dovish and really, really dovish. The euro is interesting. Okay. Jeff, do you agree with that view . If so, what are the levels you are watching right now, shortterm . Well, jackie, i do agree with jimmy. Look at the level back on st. Paddys. That 100. 33. Its going to be a challenge to sustain above 100. The fed will try to control. One thing they can, its the velocity and the peace. I think were going to see a tortuous type pace rhetoric that you see at december meetings. Look at the dollar to soften. I agree with my buddy, jimmy. Speaking of thanksgiving, not too much turkey, you two. I need you alert on friday. Back to you. You there . Can you hear me . Yeah. I got you. Yeah, i know you know whats coming. You dont think its going to get as green as those uniforms that notre dame wore at fenway park last weekend . I dont think its going to be that green. We didnt win that game. It was a wonderful experience to be there. Theyre not very excited about wearing have a good thanksgiving. Happy thanksgiving, pal. Coming up, were taking some time here to reflect on what were thankful for this Holiday Season. This thanksgiving im very thankful for family, all of you who tune in and wash us. Its a question often asked this time of year. For our honeown halftime fami members it has a deeper meaning. Am i going to dance with my daughter. Thats the first thing you think of is your three kids. Tuesday before thanksgiving out of the blue i mention a little bit of a pain. Sonogram 7 00 in the morning, the most troubling phone call you could receive. The inability to get out of the chair once you hear that news, and then going to bed and getting up for thanksgiving. I have a mass in my liver. That saturday evening ironically enough was my nieces sweet 16. My daughter is sitting to my left, you know, ear to ear smile, loving the music, go dance with her now. Youre going to be here in the next five minutes. I picked her up and right there, you know, i knew. The next five minutes. I mean, thats the message. Thats the reason for me doing this. Time is our most important asset. Time is or most important asset. You cant put a price on it. The first way that you could look at it is the mass has not shrunk. The second way you look at it is the mass has not grown. A year later i still think about the next five minutes. If this helps others to kind of have that singular focus, then this is all worth it, the reason that im sharing this and talking about it. The next five minutes, its what you have in front of you. Joe, i guess we take those next five minutes for granted almost every day. I think we do. I remember vividly, very surreal, this week. You just you know from the wednesday before thanksgiving and im very thankful to be sitting here with you guys versus where i was sitting this time last year, but you take 72 hours and all you do is you think about the future and you call people and you call, you know, your friends and you worry, worry, worry about the future and, you know, that saturday night just sitting there with my daughter and thats the point of this, thats the message, the next five minutes, pick her up, dance with her right then and there. So Say Something funny, josh. Help me out here. I dont know if its funny, but i would just say that joe and i debate on the show all the time and we have disagreements about which stock, which sector, but the one thing i will never disagree with him on is how important that stuff is and realizing that your time is your biggest asset not just as an investor but as a human being. I think thats really great message and im appreciative that joe put this stuff out there. We all are. As i said yesterday in a tweet, it took a lot of courage for you to do it. Yeah. Loved it, joe. Happy thanksgiving, guys. Happy thanksgiving. Many more. For more on joes story, go to cnbc. Com halftime. We urge all of you to go there and not only see that video but read joes story as well. Coming up, final trades ahead of the holiday. Those new glasses . They are. Do i look smarter . Yeah, a little. Youre making money now, are you investing . Well, ive been doing some research. Let me introduce you to our broker. How much does he charge . I dont know. Okay. Uh, do you get your fees back if youre not happy . dad laughs wow, youre laughing. Thats not the way the world works.
