The exact circumstances are not clear, but what is clear is everybody on board the aircraft is dead. Here is john with the latest. I think the death toll is 298. 315 with the malaysian aircrew, and the mostly dutch. The flight going down to kuala lumpur. 27 australians, 23 malaysians, nine british, 23 u. S. Citizens, and 23 unaccounted for. As you say, the flight left at 12 15 local time in holland. It would have arrived three hours ago in kuala lumpur. It went down over Eastern Ukraine, the town of torez, 50 kilometers from the russian border. It is important to point out they were authorized they could travel at 33,000 feet. They were also informed by the Ukrainian Air Traffic Control that the area was not designated as a war zone. The International Transport association said there were no flight restrictions either. It is a boeing triple seven 777 widebody. 11 gadflies surface to air missiles took it out, it would seem, according to u. S. Intelligence. A bit oft of you weaponry that the Ukrainian Armed forces and Russian Armed forces do possess. Its interesting, the social media post. According to social media according to afp prorussian insurgents were tweeting that they shut down a Ukrainian Army plane, then realized it was the Malaysian Airliner, and those tweets oratorical were quickly taken off. A very interesting development. The u. S. Security council are meeting at 10 00 a. M. Friday morning. The u. K. Parliament that is pressing for a full and thorough and independent International Investigation here is one comment from the mayor of donetsk. Impossible is almost it is simply technically impossible. The thing is that our air defenses are limited to manned portable air defense systems. They dont work past 600 meters or even 500 meters. Obviously, investigations throughout. Manifest, tion the different nationalities of the people flying on board that aircraft. What have the governments been saying . Lets look at president vladimir putin, who was on the phone with president obama when this happened. He is going to the ukrainian government. He is saying the state on whose territory that this happened is responsible for this tragedy. Welcomesnian president all assistance. Obama has called a big comment coming from vice president. Not the next event. A blown out of the sky. John dawson with the latest ed over the17 down skies of Eastern Ukraine. Malaysia says it is unable to verify the cause of the crash. The Prime Minister held a News Conference earlier, and indeed, he was commenting on the events in the skies of Eastern Ukraine. Day in what tragic has already been a tragic year for malaysia. As we work to understand what happened, our thoughts and prayers are with the families and friends of those on board the flight. I cannot imagine what they must be going through at this painful time. To ours go live correspondent. What else did the Prime Minister have to say . Firstly, it is a touch of tragic deja vu as he was hosting a press conference at the Emergency Operation center where conferences or also held. During this press conference, promised her najib did say that the cause of the tragedy had yet to be confirmed. Inis working with his peers ukraine and in the netherlands to verify exactly what occurred. He also said that there will be a full investigation. President obama has said he will support him in whatever way he can. The malaysian government is set to send a team to kiev, including a special Operations Team and a medical team to provide any support. Malaysian airlines is now in the process of notifying the next of kin. Prime minister najib has definitely taken on the position that they will provide information when they can verify the facts. Thank you. We can get over to new mexico. We are joined on the food on by allen deal. There is a lot of speculation right now. What sort of picture are you drawing . Up thate reports hold somebody shut down another aircraft earlier this morning, i guess nobody has taken credit for that either, you wonder if whoever was doing that thought this was another tactical aircraft that were shut down. Maybe they mistook this airliner. Indeed, weve had some information from social media us saying that there were these progression rebels who did claim they had shut down a military jet, and then they realized what happened. They took those tweets down. What are the next steps if you are an investigator here . Obviously, we need to get our hands on the wreckage and, of course, the black box. I also worked as an investigator for the u. S. Air force. Im sure there are an awful lot of u. S. Satellites scanning that area of the world. There may be some information about who owned that missile launcher coming out of the pentagon, but im just guessing there. Im not talking to the pentagon anymore. Im retired from the air force. Anyway, get the black boxes. Obviously, those are critical. Also, the wreckage is critical. You would want to find evidence of the type of missile that was used. That would tie it back perhaps to one country or a rebel group, one or the other. N, we are here again, we are here with Malaysia Airlines, and i guess the black box is going to be vital, or will it not be given the suddenness of it . I think its probably less important in malaysia 17 than it 370, if we ever find it. I think we know pretty much what happened. , aiously, by all accounts missile shot this aircraft down. I dont think there is any question about that. Questions about whether or not aircraft could have been almost sounded like it was a fatal complaint. I guess it was a cell phone photo of the aircraft coming down with the starboard engine the wing looked like it was on fire. These missile systems, buk missile systems, obviously have very large were hands war heads. In the past, weve seen airliners, like an airbus had in small infraredguided air missile, and i was able to land, but this is a much larger warhead. It may have been a done deal once the missile locked on and was launched. The information on the black box may be more academic in this case, unlike the situation earlier with the malaysian 370 accident in the indian ocean. Thank you so much for joining us, alan diehl, a former ntsb investigator. In a moment, we will return to our other top story. That is the invasion of gaza taking place. This is on the move. What is the overall reaction from the business side of things . You know, over the last 10 days, the tension has been increasing. Ofisrael, you see a lot concern. It is tourism season here. A lot of groups are holding back. Hotels are not entirely empty, but they are certainly losing a lot of business here. What about where you are in tel aviv . What is it like on the streets there . The iron dome defense that israel does employee seem to be effective. It has been quite amazing. Andtalk to any israeli, aey are just got smacked gob smacked. They cant believe that in the you will the afternoon hear the air raid sirens, they will go into a stairwell in their house or the bomb shelters open in neighborhoods, and then 10 minutes later, the all clear signal goes out. Everybody is back at the cafes and the beach. Thank you very much indeed. Keep safe. Is, of course, what has been going on in Eastern Ukraine, what continues in gaza, the insurgency in iraq what is this doing to Energy Prices . They are up. We have, at least compared to 3 00 p. M. Yesterday, and just to show you, that is a twoday chart 101. 28. This was when we found out about the plane. That is when we found out about the gaza. A 2. 5 jumping about in west texas. That is the most in about a month. Per barrel. T 104 one analyst commenting right now hes basically saying anything remotely connected to supply concerns, supply disruption will lead to higher oil prices, given the fact that all of this, keep in mind, is happening against the backdrop of these new sanctions against russia. That is what you have for crude. When you talk about the middle east, libya, for example, very nearby. There was an oversupply of brent. What do we have for brent . We are up 0. 5 . Natural gas is up 1 5 of 1 . 4 10 of 1 . Equity markets are open across the region. Shares of Malaysia Airline last i checked, they were down 15 . There we go. We are down 13 . It is hard to imagine november or december of last year, trading over 40, 50 for those levels. That is what we have for the region. There is a lot of downward pressure. A volume is quite heavy, especially if you take a look at the japanese session. There is money flowing into safe haven trades. I mentioned gold. Look at oil, for example. Look at dollaryen. A fivemonth low. The yen is at its strongest level against the dollar, against the euro, as well, since february. We are 15 minutes away from the open in hong kong. We will continue to track this. Next, the ax falling at microsoft with the latest round of job cuts. We have details when on the move returns. There are reports that alibaba is to delay its u. S. Stock debut until september. Tell us about this much awaited ipo. Where are we getting this from . We are getting it from the source familiar with the company, telling Bloomberg News at this ipo is likely delayed until september. That is because the securities and Exchange Commission needs a bit more time to review the prospectus of alibaba, and alibaba wants to give them that time. The original plan was to try to do this debut in august, potentially around august 8. 8,t is an auspicious date, 8 to the chinese, although it is not so auspicious that they are not being willing to be weight be patient. There isnt a better time to be doing it, i suppose. Certainly. They wanted to get the roadshow done, to the roadshow before people went off on vacation in august, but clearly, that isnt the case. Markets perhaps could see better fortunes in september. We know that markets have had a bit of a tough run lately. And why is he is the listing venue for this stock. Is theysics listing venue for this stock. The ipo could raise 20 billion. An amazing valuation. Could we see a further delay . What are people telling you about that . The roadshow could be delayed further. Of course, Fund Managers are sitting on the beach or by a lake during the month of august, not able to engage in the roadshow process. Theother element to watch, acquisition spree that alibaba has been on in recent months that delayed the process because washington has to take a closer look at all of these deals as they become part of this company that is going to list. By the way, alibaba has been adding stakes in everything from logistics to media to retail, even a taxi service and shanghai in shanghai to rival over uber. Thanks very much, zeb eckert. Hong kongs iconic trends mark 110 trains marked 110 years in service today. Rosalind chin has an exclusive behind the scenes look. With the distinctive doing ding, about 150 trams fly the streets of hong kong every day. I handful of these are built each year. Hong Kong Tramways makes all of its on the vehicles. Engineers have borrowed ideas from other industries, introducing aluminum and fiberglass to replace the old structures. We are using aircraft science. Since the transport company took over in 2010, hong Kong Tramways has been on a modernization drive. Affordable,em more safer, quicker. Tramve also introduced a positioning and dispatching system, and we are using this system to provide realtime information. Hong Kong Tramways revenue comes mostly from passenger fares and advertising, but fewer people are taking trams. About 200,000 journeys are made each day. That is 30,000 less than five years ago. It is not easy to raise fares. It doesnt go down well with passengers. Plus, the Company Needs government approval to do so. A ride on a Hong Kong Tram is pretty cheap, . 30 per ride, but it can get pretty cozy with your fellow passengers. Its not exactly fast. Average speeds are around eight or nine kilometers per hour. It also gets really hot in the summer months, like it is now, but that is one thing that could change. Feasibility tests are being done on air conditioning in trams. The question is whether passengers are willing to potentially pay more to sit in cooler temperatures, and sensible than onto a traditional aesthetic, it may be a little too modern for some. 100 10 years, hong kongs trams have seen relatively few changes. Perhaps a welcome constant in this bustling metropolis. Rosalyn chen, bloomberg, hong kong. At the moment,y the downing of mh 17, the Malaysian Airlines 777, apparently, by all accounts of the moment, shot down by a missile. This is not confirmed yet. Fromlines coming through the federal aviation administration, the faa in the u. S. , issuing a statement after prohibiting u. S. Flight operations over the andern part of the ukraine saying that this is actually in addition to an earlier statement that they had made. Also, the Prime Minister in australia, tony abbott, has been talking about this, as well. He is been making comments, saying it look the crash looks less like an accident than a crime. Tony abbott making those reports. We will be like in kuala lumpur getting the latest reaction to the shooting down of that Malaysian Airline aircraft. No survivors, as a Malaysian Airliner is shot out of the sky. Who to blame . Ukraine and separatist rebels accuse each other. A terrible tragedy. Kuala lumpur says in no distress call was made. Is reacting with shock and outrage to the shooting down of a Malaysian Airliner in ukraine. All 298 people on board are dead. There is intensifying stagflation that the jet was hit by prorussian fighters. Jon is here with the latest. What do we know . 154 were dutch. Lets go on, if i can, to where it went down, the town of torez in Eastern Ukraine, 31 miles from the russian border, traveling at 30,000 feet. Widebodiedeing 777 plane. The missile that took it down, according to u. S. Intelligence, a sa11 gadfly. As you know, the social media posts from prorussian theyts, pointing out were tweeting that they shut down what they thought was a Ukrainian Army plane, then realized it was a Malaysian Airliner, removed those tweets. That is an interesting development. Why would you fly over what you thought was a war zone . Actually, it wasnt. Malaysian airlines was informed by the Ukrainian Air Traffic Control it was not a war zone. And europe control based in brussels. The International Transportation association said there were no flight restrictions. However, the faa issued a security advisory days ago on u. S. Flights not to flood over this. ,hen you throw in the history tel aviv a conflict zone people flight over that. U. S. Airlines were warned against flying over crimea by the faa. Again, ongoing, but clearly, is joe biden would say, it was an incident, an accident it wasnt an incident, accident it was blown out of the side out of the sky. What is the latest you are hearing in kuala lumpur . Have beenilies arriving since last night really as soon as the news broke. I actually managed to speak to one of the family members whose brother, sisterinlaw, and son were on the aircraft. England to were in attend the suns graduations or money sons graduation ceremony. As the day progresses, this shock will translate to absolute grief and perhaps even anger. Few families, as well, demanding more information, but we are not getting any. Zaini, i want to know what the airline is saying at the moment. I believe that they are informing the next of kin before they release the passenger manifest, economist they can. If im not mistaken. The family members are arriving and quickly being whisked away to a control room at the Kuala Lumpur National airport. Thenot allowed inside holding room. I suppose they want to brief the family first before they release the manifest. Thank you very much indeed for that. At kuala lumpur airport, relatives of the people who perished on that aircraft are arriving as we speak. Risk aversion is the theme today following that drop on wall street overnight. We got not just the downing of mh 17 but also the events in israel, and more specifically, on the gaza strip. Of things for lot investors to be worried about. That is the best way to explain it. Fromthing went downhill midnight. 11 30 p. M. , that is when we found out about the plane. Morning inin the asia, we found out what is happening in gaza. We are done 1 on wall street. This is what we are seeing across asia today. We were up four straight days. If we follow little further, we could erase all of those gains. The level you want to watch for the regional benchmark is 145. 98 we are at 146. 19. As we inch towards that, continue to watch that. I also want to mention volatility. The vix is up 34 . The nikkei volatility index, up the most in four months. You look at the same measure of that here in hong kong. We are basically above 13 . What does it tell you . Markets are suddenly going through a reality check. A lot of these things, geopolitical tensions has been happening quietly in the background. You have these evaluations being pushed up, and all of a sudden, you have this happening. It is almost here he ought to check psychologically as far as the markets are concerned. That is what you have right now. It is basically red. Unsurprising that we are seeing a lot of these markets selloff today. [inaudible] tanks and troops were sent in after the failure of an egyptian peace plan. The invasion is the first significant Israeli Ground operation in gaza since 2009 coming after 10 days of aerial attacks that have left more than 200 palestinians dead. Israel says at least 1200 rockets have been fired by hamas in the last week and a half. When you get tensions in the middle east, when you get fighting taking place, it does normally result in moves on the commodities market, chiefly oil. What do we have here . You react first and you ask questions later. Related tomotely supply concerns, that is what is happening. We were watching the food prices from early this morning. We started out at about 101. 50. That is up 2. 5 . 3. 65 right now. Brent, that is in the mix. Lets take a look at what is happening. Brent is up 0. 5 . Precious metals, those are being those contracts are being bought up. We talked about gold. Lets talk about silver and palladium coming off of it. Toyou compare these levels 9 00 p. M. Yesterday, we are certainly way above those levels at this point. Risk aversion is the play today. Thanks, david. Breaking news coming out of training, releasing its latest property data. Lets get to Stephen Engle in beijing. What have we got . We are looking at property prices in june in china falling in more cities than in the previous month. These are month over month figures. Yearoveryear, distal 60 not out of 70 we are seeing property increases, but it is the month over month, some of the price cuts from developers are taking and prices are coming down. June, new home prices, month over month, following and 55 out of those 70 cities. It was 35 cities in may. More cities are seeing new home prices coming down. Let me try to break down this. New Residential Home prices rising in eight out of 70 cities month over month. Seven unchanged. 55 falling. That is a sharp contrast from the previous month. Just two months ago, we still saw increases month over month in 44 cities. Two months later, in june, rising in just eight cities. What is that telling us . The Property Market is cooling off. It is showing signs of stabilizing. That is what the government wants. Credit conditions have improved after the central bank, the pboc, called on the big thanks to accelerate the granting of mortgages, give priority to firsttime homebuyers. Developers since march, they have been cutting newhome prices to lure buyers, and we have seen the prices come down. We have seen a sudden pickup and home sale values in home sales values. In june, we had the biggest monthly gain when home sales rose 33 from the previous month. Year to date, the value of sales moreill down a little bit than 9 yearoveryear, but month over month, the situation is cooling off, which you could say is improving. Thanks a lot for that. That is Stephen Engle invasion. Im going to kick it off out to australia. Agenda, rowth is on the front and center of the agenda. Paul allen is at the conference for us. Thank you very much, rish, and thank you very much, mike smith, the ceo of ensign joining us at the sidelines of the b 20. Can you give us some indication of what policy recommendations is looking to make two leaders of the g20 later this year . The important thing here is less is more. We have tried to be very pragmatic and fine tune a set of recommendations, which are achievable, really looking to improve growth and to create jobs. Various task forces, weve all got various renditions, and in the one that im leaving, its really to get regulation in place, banking regulation mainly in place. We know what is in the pipeline. Lets get it put in place and settle down. And a linetake stock that internationally so there is more consistency and certainty. There are 400 Business Leaders here from around the g20 countries. Is it possible to get a meaningful consensus with a group that large . It is not easy, but it is possible. What has been, i think, very encouraging is the amount of similarity and agreement with again,n themes, which not only around regulation, but around infrastructure, trade. I think that has been very positive indeed. Occurred, the summit you wrote an Opinion Column defending the b20. Why should ordinary people view this as more than just an elite talking shop . Its actually about creating Good Government policies, and that benefits everybody. Growth, ncrease global everybody benefits. Millions ofge jobs globally, and it improves the wealth of everyone. It is a benefit to everyone. You mentioned infrastructure being a major theme of this conference and more broadly the g20. Where is the challenge greatest in the g20 in your view . I think everybody gets it. Everybody understands infrastructure is very important and that it does help create growth, it does help create jobs, it does help create productivity and improve efficiency. There is no doubt there is sufficient liquidity in the world. The issue is, why isnt the liquidity finding the projects . Therefore, it is very important to create that transparency and understanding and a bit more uniformity in terms of how these projects are evaluated. Government has to accept that it has to take some risk in these things, as well. Why isnt the liquidity finding these projects . You mentioned there are some obstacles in the way of super funds, in particular. There are regulatory issues, but that is fairly easy to deal with. Again, it is a question of the risk return issue. It has changed fundamentally since the crisis. We have to align investor appetite. I think we have to be realistic about what risk is acceptable. In australia, tony abbott, the Prime Minister, says he wants to be an infrastructure Prime Minister. Do you feel he is delivering or is going to deliver . Yeah, i think what theyve done in terms of what they outlined in the budget is very good. Theyve put clear priorities in place. They have encouraged the states to recycle assets. I think thats an extremely positive step. When you look at some of the Research Done by the oecd as to how different countries, the ease of getting Infrastructure Projects up and running, australia is one of the best. We spoken before about the Housing Market on this trillion in australia. Do you still feel that there is no bubble . I do. I feel that the Housing Market is pretty contained at the moment. Its something that we have to watch. I think that the important thing for banks is to ensure that the underwriting standards are , and certainly, the regulator will be looking at that very closely. I think that is important. Im not seeing any signs of overheating just yet. Reportid have an interim from the merriam inquiry this week that identified housing has a Systemic Risk to australia. Do you agree with that point of view . Percent, look at the the assets in the Banking System the systemicbe risk. That is a real. Does it mean that it is vulnerable . No, not necessarily. Mike smith, thank you very much for joining us at the b20 summit in sydney. Back to you in hong kong. A screaming success. We will see why asia is music to the ears of the online music site spotify. Thats on on the move when we return. There is interest in competition in the online streaming music space now that google is in the game. Their service is squaring off against pandora and the relative newcomer to the asian market spotify. Zeb eckert has more in todays Global Outlook. A check on its website reveals it operates in about 56 territories. Pandora, for example, only in the United States. It claims 76 million listeners. That is about one quarter of the u. S. Population. Each service is unique in how it streams music to customers, some for download, fun and some for streaming. Asia has long been seen as a risky proposition because of piracy. It is a continuing fight between the record and Motion Picture industries. We see pirated material frequently on the streets of major asian cities. Filesharing sites like bittorre nt are commonly blamed for facilitating the transfer of large amounts of data. 70 of estimates, to internet traffic is consumed by these peertopeer networks, including illegal filesharing. Spotify contends its service as a counterweight to this trend in asia because it introduces a free, legal option to the market. The industry contends ondemand music streaming will eventually lessen the appeal of illegal filesharing. Here is one final thought. Remember apples 3 billion purchase of beats . That deal includes the newly launched beats music, that boasts unlimited access to over 20 million tracks. Pointr Interesting Data is just a daily mobile music streaming across the countries that weve launched and so far, with singapore taking the lead. Is more daily music mobile streaming in the singapore compared to malaysia, hong kong, and taiwan. Do you react to criticism from the likes of the musician thom yorke that you are killing off the Music Industry . How do you react to that . We are all about the music, and we are all about the artists. There is a misconception around payments to artists. License holders, record labors labels. Since our conception, weve paid over 1 billion back to the Music Industry. Half of that alone in 2013. Thank you very much for joining us. Weve got to take a break, but coming up next, a payment deadline looming. The fears of another debt default in china. We will head to beijing after the short break. Another crack showing in chinas swelling debt load. China correspondent Stephen Engle is in beijing. What is in focus . Is anotherps this example of where the government is not going to intervene and prop up a company, like what we saw with a Solar Company in march. It was the first onshore bond default and china. The writing was on the wall that other companies could miss payments, as well. I very well could be the next one, a road and Bridge Company based in the northern promises shinji. This is coal mining country that has been hurt badly by this slowing pace of growth in china. The company said in a statement it may miss a more than 400 million in the on yuan note payment next week. The chairman that is assisting authorities with an official investigation into what investigation. Into what, we dont know. We do know the chairman was removed from the provincial committee of the Chinese Committee conference. Something else is going on here. He is suspected of violations of the law. This companys business includes bridge and highway construction, real estate, coal, and agriculturerelated projects. Or haps it is another indication of small to Mediumsized Enterprises who perhaps cannot meet their liabilities given the slowing economy. Thank you very much for that. That is Stephen Engle joining us there from beijing. We have to take a break, but coming up next, we are having a look at our top story. Its that Malaysian Airlines plane crashing in ukraine. It is thought to have been shut down. Weve got the latest details and Market Reaction and indeed with the latest speculation is, as well. That is all to common the next hour of on the move. Salamat live in hong kong. This is on the move. The doomed plane, no survivors as a malaysian jet is shot down in ukraine. Invasion underway. Forces enter gaza after the fragile ceasefire collapses.
