Whether warnings remain in force, flooding building in today. More details coming up later stop its sunday 4th october. Our top story. Donald trump has released a video from hospital, where he says hes feeling better but that the next few days will be the real test. The president was admitted for treatment after testing positive for coronavirus earlier this week. The video comes after a day of mixed messages over his health, as our north america correspondent peter bowes reports. Donald trump was my first full day in hospital, confusion and concern over his health, with mixed messages coming from his doctor and white house. Then late in the day, a tweet from the president and another video, an update from President Trump on his condition. video, an update from President Trump on his condition. I came here, wasnt willing so well, better now, working to get me back, i have to be back. But when he addressed reporters outside Walter Reed Medical Centre earlier, the residents personal physician. He was vague on whether the president needed oxygen at some point. As he ever been on oxygen . Right now he is not on oxygen. But did you previously . Yesterday and today he was not on previously . Yesterday and today he was not on oxygen. Previously . Yesterday and today he was not on oxygen. So he has not been honoured during this Covid Treatment. He is not on oxygen right iiow. Treatment. He is not on oxygen right now. It later emerged mr trump had received oxygen at the white house before he was admitted to hospital. There was further confusion when the white house chief of staff mark meadows indicated to reporters at the hospital but the president was still not a clear path. Donald trump has been given to experimental drug which is hoped will speed up his recovery from covid. Which is hoped will speed up his recovery from covid. Im starting to feel good. You dont know over the next period of a few days, i guess thats the real test. You could see what happens over the next couple of days. Mr trump also sought to explain his decision not to shelter at home from the virus. had no choice because ijust didnt wa nt to had no choice because ijust didnt want to stay in the white house. I was given that offer, stay in the white house, lock yourself in, dont ever leave, dont ever go to the 0val ever leave, dont ever go to the oval office, just stay upstairs and enjoy it, dont see people, dont talk to people and just be done with it and talk to people and just be done with itandi talk to people and just be done with it and i cant do that. With the president in hospital, there is growing concern that more members of his inner circle are also testing positive for the virus. Many of them at tended what is described as a super spreader event where donald trump named his nominee for the va ca nt trump named his nominee for the vacant seat on the Supreme Court. They include the former governor of newjersey Chris Christie who is checked himself into hospital with a slight fever. This is a crisis that has engulfed the Trump Administration less than a month before the election. And peterjoins us now from los angeles. Peter, whats the reaction been to the video . We are waking up to this new video. I wonder what the reaction to it has been. Good morning. Certainly a lot of reaction to it. Its the message that a lot of donald Trump Supporters wanted to see and hear. Because as weve been hearing, a lot of confusion over the last 2a hours. With mixed messages all weve heard from Donald Trumps doctors and what the white house was saying and its as if donald trump has said, im going to be mine press spokesman and tell the story as i believe it should be told. Its typical donald trump and there he was looking reasonably 0k, saying that he is feeling better. The message is the same. Donald trump said the next few days will be crucial and in a Statement Released later in the day, from his stop, the key line in it in it is that he is not out of the woods yet but he has made substantial progress but the mood and the tone is up deed but its a cautious one and they look into the next few days to really get a clear idea as to how donald trump is doing and as to whether ultimately he will make a fast recovery. Almost 13,000 new cases of coronavirus were confirmed across the uk yesterday, nearly double the previous days total. The government said the spike was caused by a technical error which led to a delay in publishing some of the positive results from the last week of september. 0ur Political Correspondent nick eardley is in our london newsroom for us this morning. Nick, what more do we know . Its all to do with how the figures are collated. This looks bad, its nearly double the figure from the previous day. There was a delay in recording some of the tests, if that makes sense. They werent added to the figures of the right time, but it wont affect our people get their own positive results, if that is what they are getting. The government is basically saying it was this technical issue which means the figure was so far yesterday. It does i suppose recent question being asked consistently about how these figures are collated. Its awkward for the government and does raise questions about how those figures are coming together. There is an explanation this isnt suddenly doubled the number of people testing positive in a day. Its basically all about how the figures are collected. What does this new information tell us about the trajectory of the spread of the action at the moment. There was a levelling off after the alarming rise in recent days. What can you tell us . We have seen that big increase in the number of positive cases, it was going up last week, and we got that suggestion the rule of six might be working in england, and there might be a case for the reproduction rate going down too closer to one. The next few days are going to be pretty key and figuring out exactly what is going on. What the government is saying, they dont totally rely on that 13,000 number, it tends to ask is more to focus on whats going on over it tends to ask is more to focus on whats going on over 7 it tends to ask is more to focus on whats going on over 7 day period of time so whatever happens over the next few days, it will probably give us next few days, it will probably give usa next few days, it will probably give us a firmer picture and a lot of scrutiny because of those figures from yesterday. A powerful storm hit Southern France and northern italy. Villages around the french city of nice suffered serious damages with the mayor describing it as the worst in living memory. In the piedmont region, its critical, roads and bridges washed away by flood water. Sir David Attenborough told breakfast earlier this week, that his hope for the future of the planet lies in the hands of children and some of our younger viewers were given the chance to ask him their own questions. Now, three more, prince george, Princess Charlotte and prince louis have each been quizzing sir david about the Natural World. Frankie mccamley was listening in. A big question from a very little royal. Prince george hasjoined his siblings to ask Sir David Attenborough question about animals. Its a rare glimpse of the children speaking in the first time weve heard from the little brother, prince remdesivir. The children are on a documentary airing on itv tomorrow. Just like the commitments shown in combating coronavirus. Look at that. |j the commitments shown in combating coronavirus. Look at that. I have believe that it we all work together, we can make a difference. More than 40,000 people from all over the world will take part in the first ever virtual London Marathon today. Only the elite athletes will run together, completing the 26. 2 miles around stjamess park in london. 0ther runners will be able to take part wherever they are by using an app to track their progress. All the usual nonsense as you can see here. Loads of coverage on todays London Marathon. Its a marathon with a twist. We will be speaking to some of the runners taking part virtually in terms of their own set up, clocking up miles, throughout the morning here on brea kfast. Throughout the morning here on breakfast. And Louise Minchin is taking part, running alongside rob, who is keeping her company. Lets take a look at todays front pages. The daily mirror headline claims President Trump repeatedly asked am i going to die . When he received his positive test for coronavirus. The paper also says the president is still not on a clear path to recovery, despite his upbeat tweet from hospital. The times suggests farmers are downsizing turkeys for a rule of six christmas. The paper says farmers expect less demand for bigger birds this year as family gatherings could be limited under coronavirus restrictions, so breeders must decide whether to put the birds on a crash diet or slaugher them early. A royal grilling for sir david says the telegraph, which carries a photo of prince george, Princess Charlotte and prince louis, who were filmed putting questions about their favourite animals and extinction to Sir David Attenborough. And online, the Washington Post reflects on a day of confusion and conflicting statements relating to President Trumps health. The Washington Post focuses on the health of donald trump. The article focuses on a statement from mr trumps physician, who says he has made substantial progress since his Coronavirus Diagnosis and will be closely monitored in between doses of an experimental drug. Just a bit more on the turkey story. Ive been reading some of the detail around it. Turkeys can range from three kilograms to 20 kg. Most families opt for around six which will feed a gathering of ten with leftovers for boxing day. My suggestion is, carry on with the big bird and let it be due for the next month. 20 minutes per pound in 20 minutes over . Turkeyjalfrezi by the end of toxin day. I leave the turkey cooking to someone else. Were talking it on the fourth of dover. Dolly parton, we were seeing Christmas Songs on five live yesterday. This caught my eye in the sunday times, which is how keen some of us have been to temp up our bookshelves. Whether it be chatting to the relatives on various video apps or more professional encounters with our colleagues and people showing off. In a particular suggestion that some people are inclined, including ben fogel, the broadcaster, to go for colour co ordination. You dontjust want to look clever. I think im going to go for the alternatives. Thats the way to stand out. Good morning. We have seen lots of rain already this weekend. It has been raining all night. Look at these rainfall totals. Places like we can hold, in west sussex, have had nearly a months worth of rain over 94 hours. Wiggonholt. The area of low pressure bringing us rain is the low pressure system but also brought a severe flooding we had mentioned just a moment ago in the piedmont region of italy and south eastern france. For us, it has been raining pretty solidly, for quite a few of you, anyway, through saturday and overnight. More rain on the charts as well. This is the radar on how things are looking at the moment. The met office amber wanting an ethos that eastern scotla nd wanting an ethos that eastern scotland has expired now, but the one in wales, the midlands and south western england remain in force. Here we will see further accumulations of rain. The rain in scotla nd accumulations of rain. The rain in scotland should turn to pivot away from the east so it should start to improve you as we go through the morning, but quite windy day around scotla nd morning, but quite windy day around scotland and the Northern Ireland coastline. There will be a brighter weather, north wales, Northern England and eventually parts of south eastern scotland seeing some sunshine. Not entirely dry. We should see some showers working on. Talking about the rain, because of the rainfall accumulations, we are starting to see a number of flood warnings put out. There are 30 in scotland, another ten in england, and all that water feeding into the catchments means we could see those flood warnings increasing in number through the day. Ill keep you posted. 0vernight tonight, rain tends to ease two showers, but that certainly looks like it could be quite wet for a time across parts of south western england, with the rain relu cta nt to south western england, with the rain reluctant to clear from here. Clear spells and showers, some of them quite heavy across Northern England. Eastern areas of scotland, into next week, monday through tuesday and into wednesday, the same area of low slow moving one, continues to loiter. The weather should gradually improve a bit. We lose the persistent rain and swap it for showers, those showers will be quite heavy, noticeably across parts of scotla nd heavy, noticeably across parts of scotland and Eastern England, more rain to come across Northern Ireland, those temperatures continuing to struggle. Highs of around 14 16 celsius. Tuesdays forecast, day sunshine and showers. Some of those showers will be quite heavy and prolonged. Particularly across england and wales. Most places will probably see a downpour over the next few days, around 14, 15 or 16 celsius. So we have got more rain to come as we go on through the day today. Weve already seen a number of flood warnings in force, so we could see flooding impact building and as we go through the rest of the day today. Thank you, chris. We will speak to you ina thank you, chris. We will speak to you in a bit. While you are watching the Weather Forecast we were a bit distracted by instagram. We were frantically checking through our phones, because a new picture has been posted by the american president , and he is in a Conference Room at the hospital he has been out for the past day or two, i tell you what, it is not skipped in general. It is quite a Conference Room, but, in the president ial suite. Its not skipton general. I guess that gives the impression, quite clearly, he is in reasonable and health to be up he is in reasonable and health to be up and about and working, because he has various papers in front of him and a pen in his hand. A president at work is certainly the theme his tea m at work is certainly the theme his team is trying to put out. Now its time for the film review with mark kermode. This hello and welcome to the film review with me mark kermode rounding up the best movies available for viewing in cinemas and in the home. Back in 2004, bill murray earned his only oscar nomination for lost in translation written and directed by sofia coppola. Hi, dad. Hey, kiddo. Now the pair have re teamed for on the rocks, a whimsical father daughter comedy starring the brilliant Rashida Jones as laura, a 30 something mother that starts to doubt her husbands fidelity. Here. You sure you dont want to use your phone . Marlon wayans is dean, whose numerous business trips have increasingly taken him away from his wife and young kids. You good . Yeah. But its murrays philandering felix who really starts the alarm bells ringing, assuring his daughter that all men are the same, that theyre alljust like him. At some point we can make a decision about whether to tap his phone. No laura, come on. He should be worshipping the ground you walk on, and if hes not, you need to know. What follows is a bittersweet new york caper in which laura and her dad pursued dean around the city while swapping nora ephron style observations about the differences between men and women with an added generation gap edge. Kind of like the father of the bride meets when harry met sally. Thank you. Im going to take that as a compliment. Jones is terrific as laura, a writer who finds herself blocked by the pressures of parenthood, and whose anxieties about her husband, stirred up by herfather, reflect deeper worries about her own worth her life, hertalent, herachievements. As for murray, hes deliciously deadpan as the dinosaur who spent his life chasing women but who, in the end wants, nothing more than to be loved by the daughter he idolises. And how do you bluff . Poker face. Poker face nice theres a great supporting turn, too, from jenny slate as lauras self obsessed friend love life provides a catastrophic counterpoint to the films central relationship. But its the screwball comedy chemistry betweenjones and murray that makes this pop, combining warmth and wit with an astringent underlying sadness that really cuts to the heart of the piece. Its in cinemas now, and on apple tv in a few weeks. Remember this face . She was one of spotlight magazines 30 under 30 playwrights to watch. We watched, but where did she go . Staying with new york, the 40 year 0ld version finds writer director radha blank starring in a semi autobiographical tale of a harlem based playwright struggling to find success without selling out. Put in nothing, it will be nothing. Like your career . Having won a 30 under 30 award over a decade ago, radha now finds herself Teaching High School students and wondering what happened to her once promising career. How are you . Good. Archie tells me youre teaching. Her best friend archie, played by peter y kim, thinks reed birneys smarmy theatre manager is a solution, if only radha would give him what he wants, the saleable cliches of poverty porn. But radha is more interested in getting back to her roots, rapping with a dj as the punningly named radhamus prime. Get it . Think about me doing hip hop. Doing what to it . A popular Festival Awards winner, blanks feisty debut is an indie film with oomph. By turns funny, angry and wryly satirical deftly blending the personal and the political in a manner that is as entertaining as it is enlightening and empowering. White man with a black womans butt. How you carry all that back there . What the. Its in cinemas now, and on netflix from october the 9th. We have to make a decision right now. A decision ijust assume we had already made four months ago when trial prep began. Are we using this trial to defend ourselves against very serious charges that could land us in prison for ten years . The trial shouldnt be about us. Well, i would love it if it was not about us, but it definitely is. Aaron sorkin rose to fame as the writer of tvs west wing, before penning fast talking screenplays for films like the social network which earned him an oscar. In 2017, he wrote and directed the feature film mollys game, and now hes back behind the camera for the trial of the chicago 7, a showy romp about the real life prosecution of anti vietnam war protesters charged with conspiracy to incite a riot at the 1968 democratic convention. Weve heard testimony from 27 witnesses under oath that say you hoped for a confrontation with the police. That your plans for the convention were designed specifically to draw the police into a confrontation. Well, if id known it was going to be the first wish of mine that came true, i would have aimed a lot higher. 0riginally written for Steven Spielberg to helm back in 2007, Aaron Sorkins second directorial outing is a star studded and somewhat hair heavy affair. With Sasha Baron Cohen and Jeremy Strong sporting full head trees as counterculture icons Abbie Hoffman and jerry rubin, while mark rylance experiments with an outlandish comb over as lawyer william kunstler. Can you tell us why . Because this is my courtroom. 0n the other side of the cultural parting, Joseph Gordon levitt is more conservatively camped as prosecutor richard schultz, while Frank Langella pretty much dispenses with hair altogether in a scene stealingly cranky turn as judge julius hoffman. On top of that, we have Eddie Redmayne as tom hayden, John Carroll Lynch as david dellinger, kelvin harrisonjr as fred hampton, Michael Keaton as ramsey clark, and Yahya Abdul Mateen as bobby seale, a stellar roster indeed. How much is it worth to you, whats your price . To call off the revolution . My life. Anyone watching scenes of protesters being clubbed and tear gassed in us cities, or of African Americans being bound and gagged by a clearly politicised judiciary cannot help but draw comparisons with contemporary news footage, comparisons that aaron sorkin is keen to emphasise. There is a message in this entertainment. Im tired of hearing you. It would be impossible for me to care any less what you are tired of. But theres also a fair amount of contrivance, caricature and, you cant handle the truth, courtroom drama cliches. Unsurprising since aaron sorkin wrote both of the play and film of a few good men. The end result is a hodgepodge of still relevant history, and inevitable screen hokum that you can find in cinemas now. Meanwhile, the netflix only release of the boys in the band also takes us back to 1968, with a new version of mark crowleys stage play. All right, this is a raid, everybodys under arrest. Hello darling connie casserole, or mary, dont ask . Hi, ann marie. Come one, you can put it in the kitchen. Who is this exotic woman over here . My dear, i thought you had perished, where have you been hiding your classically chiseled features . Crowleys play was first filmed in 1970 by william friedkin, with leonard fry as birthday boy harold, at whose party a group of gay men tear themselves and each other apart. Since then, its had numerous revivals including a barnstorming 2017 west and production in which mark gatiss played the imperious harold to a t. Happy birthday. Youre late. 0h, michael, you kill me. When hes sober, hes dangerous. When he drinks, hes lethal. Now Zachary Quinto takes on that enigmatic role, rejoining the cast of the cast ofjoe mantellos Tony Award Winning 2018 Broadway Revival for this latest screen version. Shot by ace cinematographer bill pope, whose credits include the matrix and baby driver, mantellos film works hard to transcend its stage roots leading us through the social interactions with a Restless Energy thats hard to resist. We all have to call the one person we truly believe we have loved. While the play itself is undoubtedly dated, despite some rewriting, the vivacious ensemble cast keep things fresh injecting a modern energy into this period piece and celebrating the legacy of crowley who died in march. Now, i dont, i dont want to cause anyone any offence. But i brought my own presents this year. Yes, i have. Yeah. Itsjust, to be honest. You know, ive had enough of all the soap and the socks all the time, because it is a lot. Isnt it . Yeah, i know, i can see it. I recognise the shape. I like them, ive just got a lot of them. From the us to the uk with eternal beauty, a melancholy darkly comedic psychodrama in which Sally Hawkins plays jane, a middle aged woman living with schizophrenia whose life, like the film, slips between the past and the present between hallucinations and the here and now. Nine oclock every night, spiders come out of the walls. Like one now. Morfydd clark, soon to be seen in the brilliant saint maud, is the youngerjane, jilted at the altar by her errant fiance triggering the breakdown that will haunt her later life. Elsewhere in this impressively a list brit pick cast, alice lowe is janes sympathetic sister, penelope wilson, her unsympathetic mother and billie piper, the chancer sibling looking for an opportunity to cash in onjanes misfortune. Im claiming money on the sick for Mental Health, and theyre coming around here shortly to examine me to make sure im in a nutjob. Why, whats wrong . Ive got what youve got. Time of the month . Written and directed by craig roberts, who made a splash in submarine and helmed 2015s justjim, eternal beauty is an ambitious film that has drawn comparison with the works of wes anderson, michel gondry, and charlie kaufman. Youre the most beautiful thing ive seen today. Can you shut up . Personally, i was put more in mind of the very little seen tim spall oddity stanley a man of variety, an equally adventurous work in which a psychiatric patient is visited by the ghosts of musical performers all played by spall himself. Inspired by a relative to whom roberts wanted to pay tribute, and co produced by the wellcome trust, eternal beauty strives to avoid stigmatising janes condition. Although, personally, ifound the performances rather too mannered and overwrought to entirely convince or engage. But astute Production Design and expressive 35mm cinematography help draw us in, and show us the world through janes eyes. Overlapping voices jane you can see it in select cinemas and on demand now. Thats it for this week, thanks for watching the film review. Stay safe, and ill see you next week. Ive got something for you. Siren blares. Youre dead. There are plenty of people around the country getting ready for their own London Marathon. We are with you in spirit. We love to share things like this thereon this morning. Is there anywhere in the uk were someone a place where someone could avoid getting wet today . There could bea avoid getting wet today . There could be a few areas across Northern England. To be honest, if you are going up this morning, you will encounter rain and weve seen a lot of rain. Purpose so far which is only four days old, within 100 only four days old, within100 millimetres of rain. A lot of these places are in southern england, 78 millimetres of rain. Showing a rain cloud. These are some of the favourite spots of having dry weather. We are likely to see some flooding. The rain that is going to be very slow to ease up. Eventually starting to pivot away to east scotland. Northern ireland, much wetter day compared with yesterday. Quite windy as well with this rain band with gales around many of our coastal areas. A bit of sunshine across Northern England, north wales, southern scotland but they will be showers here as well. Not entirely dry. With all that rain coming down over the last few days, a number of flood warnings in force. Another tenant england. As all that water comes down, you could see those flood warnings increases be gone through the day to day. 0vernight tonight, weve got more rain to come across parts of south west england. Rain tending to his away from other parts of the uk. There will be further showers from Northern England and scotland. Clear spells in between, 7 10 degrees and through monday, tuesday and into wednesday as well, the same area of low pressure on the charts, its a particularly slow moving low which is got stuck over our neighbourhood. Yes the weather stays unsettled. For monday, the rain returns to Northern Ireland, very wet here once again. Scotland, england and wales for the most part, a day of sunshine and showers but slow across eastern areas. A few claps of thunder mixed in. 14 areas. A few claps of thunder mixed in. 14 16 areas. A few claps of thunder mixed in. 14 16 degrees but at least it wont be raining all the time. Tuesday, the same mixture. Schar was widespread across england and wales, Northern Ireland, western scotland seeing a few as well, bit sunshine, temperatures coming in at about 13 16 celsius so it stays unsettled, more rain to come, likely to see further localised flooding moving in in different parts of the uk. That is the latest weather. A cycling revolution is spreading across europe as people swap cars and buses for greener, healthier ways to get about. Coronavirus plays a big part in this, people getting off bicycles and onto bikes. Paris, the number of people cycling since lockdown is up by more than a quarter compared to last year, as governments across the continent look to encourage the shift to two wheels. Anna holligan reports. The streets of the french capital are being transformed. Its like a revolution. Before we had a city with a car, only car and now we have the city with bicycles, with walking and public transportation. Shack sections of the notoriously petrol filled neighbourhood are now entirely car free. Space for b i cycles, entirely car free. Space for bicycles, and people use it. Build and they will come, as they say. Look at that. That is like a big traffic jam, you know. Look at that. That is like a big trafficjam, you know. I started to cycle so i could avoid public transport. Coronavirus encouraged me to cycle more than before. These types of changes normally take decades, because of the pandemic, there was an urgency which meant they happened here overnight. Since they happened here overnight. Since the coronavirus struck, the french government has invested 20 Million Euros ina government has invested 20 Million Euros in a push to get more parisians using bikes, including subsidies of 50 euros towards the cost of bike repairs. And these cycling proficiency classes are now free to anyone in the city who wants to learn to ride. Further south, in italy, the Regional Government of lombardi has so far spent 100 and 2 Million Euros to stimulate cycling. But claudia, who has been driving passengers around milliron for more than two decades, what is not enough consideration has been given to those who rely on cars, and it is already causing conflict. Translation no, it is not easy to live together, for motorists and cyclists, it is difficult to share the city. You need to build a system where the motorist leans under the cyclist la nes where the motorist leans under the cyclist lanes do not come into conflict, because otherwise it would bea conflict, because otherwise it would be a dangerous situation and it would potentially increase the number of accidents. Climate groups have warned People Living in polluted cities are more at risk of contracting lung infections like covid 19. 0nce contracting lung infections like covid 19. Once a week, activists gather in the heart of milan to push for permanent infrastructure to support cyclists. There are a few lanes that have been built, but compared to the need, they are really a drop in the ocean. Pollution has fallen by 50 in some of yours busiest city since march, but what of this covid related boost for pedal power accelerates depends on the scale of investment, and how many of us commit to this change for good. Anna hoggan, bbc news, milan. Ive just good. Anna hoggan, bbc news, milan. Ivejust got a good. Anna hoggan, bbc news, milan. Ive just got a bike. Have you relatively recently. Is this a new adventure . It was a lot decision about three months are and it has just turned up. Are you as enthusiastic now as you are when you bought it . Probably not iwouldnt be going out in this weather. Are you going to get one of those, i love those baskets they have on the front of the bike, with a couple of dogsin front of the bike, with a couple of dogs in them. I cant be doing any extra weight at all. Are you going to be pedalling in at four oclock in the morning . No time for liquid Spencer Kelly and a lewington. Time for click. Hey, welcome to click. Hope you are doing 0k. Laras here too. How are you doing, mate . I am good thanks. This week i started talking to friends about how the winter was likely to be. Would we head back to doing zoom get togethers . What you think . There was a novelty for a couple of months in meeting friends on video chat, but then to be honest, i got fed up with them. Even a antisocial geek like me realises that things are better in the flesh. So true. But the idea of heading back to video calls doesnt seem to have been missed by fashion designers. All you need to do is take a look at some of what was on show at milan and London Fashion weeks, and there seems to be a bit of a theme of waist up fashion, all about big collars and logos around the necklines. I mean, for a while now it has not seemed so important how we dress our bottom halves. Dunno know what youre talking about. But listen, this week, i have actually been out and about meeting real people and wearing proper trousers. These people are going to do something incredible. They are trying to make the fastest sailing boat that they can, to compete in one of the toughest ocean races that there is. And for one day only, they let me in to see how theyre doing it. The americas cup is like the formula 1 of boat racing. Fast, ultra competitive, with all of the power coming from the wind. And the boats dont so much sail as fly. Relatively small foils underneath the vessels act like wings that help to lift the entire hull out of the water and massively reduce drag. I learned to sail, god, you know, 35 years ago or something. I take myself back to that eight year old kid thinking about the boats that we are sailing in now, doing speeds over 50 knots, 65 miles an hour. I just think that is absolutely nuts. Here in portsmouth, 0lympic champion sir ben ainslies team is designing one of the five boats that will race next march. Now the americas cup has a weird rule and that is that whoever wins the event gets to decide all of the rules for the next one. Now, i am notjust talking about the location and the date, or even how many heats there are they get to dictate the type of boat that is used and the number of sailors you can have on board. So basically, every americas cup requires teams to design a new boat from scratch. In this case, the previous winners, 0racle new zealand, have chosen, guess where, new zealand as the location. They have switched from two hulled catamaran to a single hulled boat and made a host of other rule changes. One of the big changes in this cup with regards to the rules is were not allowed to do any physical testing. So we cant test in the wind tunnel or the tow tank. All the testing has been done in the simulated world, in computationalfluid dynamics on machines. Max starr is part of the team who have tested many, many virtual boat designs, repeatedly building and rebuilding them in software to try and improve the performance in the water and in the air. So Ineos Team Uk have a big mathematical problem to solve which is simulating all the air conditions and the hydrodynamic conditions on the yacht as it sails through the water underan insane number of different scenarios. To simulate what happens when water strikes the hull of a yacht, or when air hits the sail of a yacht, we pixelate those surfaces. We put little square pixels all over that yacht. At each one of those pixels we do a little bit of math, we understand what the temperature pressure and forces are that are acting then we can work out whats going to happen next and then how that cascades down the line to the next pixel and the next pixel and the next pixel. And suddenly we have got an idea of what a real, living boat will look like when it is in the water in race conditions. And the more detailed your simulation is, the more pixels you can break your boat into, the more accurate your model becomes. But every single pixel is simulated by a different computer processor, which means you need a massive amount of computing. Basically, you need to harness the power not of the wind but of the cloud. Now the crew do get to test how the virtual designs handle. This simulator knows exactly how the current design will behave when under the control of a master sailor. So lets see how it goes with me. Now i am sailing wow, one of the foils has gone into the water. And then, once were round there, if you go hard right and down. A little bit slow out of the tack in the front of the foils. What is fascinating with the sport is that its not like formula 1. Here, every boat can be really, really different, it is a massive unknown and there is no tried and tested formula for success. How quickly do you think you will be able to tell whether youve got it right or whether someone else has got the better boat . Well know within the first five minutes. We have got a race in december, a christmas race, which is kind of a warm up to the series itself, and pretty quickly we will know whether we got it right or wrong. Now, as Entertainment Venues have been struggling to reopen safely, one Company Hopes to bring an experience to your Kitchen Table via a smartphone. This is an audio only experience, and the idea is that you close your eyes and listen to the strange things that start happening around you. And they really do sound like they are happening in 3d space because they have been recorded using binaural sound. This is something we have heard before in the programme, and it is incredible. So with no idea what to expect spencer and i put it to the test. And if you want a taster of the experience from home, youre going to need some headphones too. Radio feedback. Is everybody here . Yes. Now get yourself a glass and fill it with water. We are all in our different rooms. Many couples in this same configuration, sitting at a table across from each other. Now close your eyes. Close your eyes and keep them closed. If you open your eyes before the session is complete, you might experience a tormenting mismatch or a renting of the thin membrane that separates this world from the other competing worlds next door. I so want to open my eyes with your eyes closed, try to form an image in your mind of the person sitting opposite you. Dont look. Dont check if they have closed their eyes. Ok, this performance is aimed at couples but ignoring that minor issue, its all about placing yourself in the story. Double is the latest show from darkfield radio. Its recent sound only productions took place in pitch black shipping containers. Now, though, it is possible via an app and a pair of headphones. So when we were working with creating these experiences at home, we still wanted it to feel like a live experience. So one of the important elements of that is that it is a timed show something that happens at a certain time so there is some feeling of community about it, even though people are sat in their different homes. The main reasons that i think that there is a lot more interest in binaural sound now because of vr and of this increasing interest in immersive experiences that placing at the centre of a narrative. Im kind of on edge because i wonder whether something. Something that will make us jump. Chuckles. Male voice two people who have known each other for however many years sit on either the side of a table. One of them has been replaced by a demon whose intentions are unclear and unlikely to be benign, and the other is planning a murder. Planning a murder . Is that you . I dont know one of us has turned into a demon and the other is planning the murder. We both sound a bit dodgy. Plate smashes. What was that . I have no idea. Much like the biannual sound recordings weve seen on the show before, its recorded using a binaural sound head, shaped like a human. In both ears are microphones. You treat this head as if it were the audience members who is going to be then listening to the performance, so every everything that the head hears is will be from the perspective of the future audience member listening with headphones. And one of the things that binaural recordings do better than any real time audio spacialisation is proximity, so we are also developing some other tech elements to include live microphones with the audio of the microphone spacialised, speech recognition and a few other things that will allow us to increase this interactivity. Male continues speakingzw didnt take long for the right moment to come. Clock ticks softly. Because opposite me, the demon has its eyes closed. And so, i stabbed it. Cutlery clangs on a plate. And now that the demonic copy is disposed of. Oh god lara laughs. Our real partner can come back. I love you with my heart. This is pretty freaky i love you with my mind. Its whispering in my ear no i dont like it i cant love you. Robotic womans voice thank you. You can remove your headphones. Thank you. Anymore than i do. Door closes. Oh and open our eyes. Goodness, that but quite bizarre oh, that was a bit of fun conceptually, i thought it was brilliant, but i wasnt sure about the storyline because i didnt actually want to murder you. And even though it sounded good, i think we probably would have both benefited from over ear headphones. True. Whats interesting though is because they asked the two people to face each other, they really can make things sound like they come from a specific place in the room because they can send one person a sound in their right ear and they send the other person a different feed where the sound is in their left ear, so you can both agree that the sound happened over there. Really interesting concept, i have to say. Thats it for short cut of click this week. The full length version is available and iplayer. Thanks for watching and we will see you soon. Bye bye. You heard good morning welcome to breakfast with chris mason and rachel burden. In a video from hospital, President Trump says hes doing well but will continue coronavirus treatment for a few more critical days. Im starting to feel good. You dont know over the next period of a few days, i guess thats the real test, so well be seeing what happens over the next couple of days. The uk registers almost 13,000 daily coronavirus cases nearly doubling from the day before. The government says a technical issue is to blame. Good morning from the wedge and rather chilly London Marathon. Elite athletes are set up in about a quarter of an hour and 45,000 runners will be taking part in the virtual London Marathon all around the country later. I will have more throughout the morning. What animal do you like . And prince george, Princess Charlotte and prince louis ask Sir David Attenborough about the future of our planet. Good morning. Its another wet paper quite a few of us today. Met office and warnings remain in force. Likely to see flooding building and as we go through the day. More details later. Its sunday 4th october. Donald trumps first full day in hospital, confusion and concern over his health, with mixed messages coming from his doctor and white house. The president himself sought to set the record straight with an update on his condition. I came here, wasnt willing so well, better now, we are working to get me all the way back, i have to be back. When he addressed reporters outside Walter Reed Medical Center earlier, the president s personal physician said mr trumps symptoms, a mild cough, nasal congestion and fatigue, are now resolving and improving. But he was vague on whether the president needed oxygen at some point. Has he ever been on supplemental oxygen . Right now he is not on oxygen. You keep saying right now, but did he previously . Yesterday and today he was not on oxygen. So he has not been on it during his Covid Treatment . He is not on oxygen right now. It later emerged mr trump had received oxygen at the white house before he was admitted to hospital. There was further confusion when the white house chief of staff, mark meadows, indicated to reporters at the hospital that the president was still not a clear path to full recovery. There is a concensus that the next two days will be crucial. The president s doctor says he is not out of the woods yet but that is improving. Im starting to feel good. You dont know over the next period of a few days, i guess thats the real test. So well be seeing what happens over the next couple of days. Mr trump also sought to explain his decision not to shelter at home from the virus. I had no choice because i just didnt want to stay in the white house. I was given that alternative, stay in the white house, lock yourself in, dont ever leave, dont even go to the oval office, just stay upstairs and enjoy it, dont see people, dont talk to people, and just be done with it, and i cant do that. With the president in hospital, theres growing concern that more members of his inner circle are also testing positive for the virus. Many of them attended whats been described as a super spreader event at the white house last weekend, where donald trump named his nominee for the vacant seat on the Supreme Court. They include the former governor of newjersey, Chris Christie, who has checked himself into hospital with a slight fever. This is a crisis that has engulfed the Trump Administration less than a month before the election. Peter bowes, bbc news, los angeles. There is this talk of technical error yet even if you spread out his rising cases, it points to the case is increasing, perhaps more greatly than we realise. It is a concerning number, nearly double what it was the day before. The explanation with hard from the department for health is, as you say, there was a technical issue which meant some community tests were being recorded improperly and that doesnt mean people who are going to get tests went being told that they were positive, it just means went being told that they were positive, itjust means the numbers of those people wont being included in the data that we get every day. So there was that number yesterday. The government saying they should be spread over a few days. What is not totally clear is what that will do totally clear is what that will do to the figures for the last week and there has been a steady increase over the last few weeks and the number of positive cases. It will be a few days before this irons out and we know what the trajectory of positive cases in england is. The government is saying that 13,000 figure, dont take it at face value. This matters, doesnt it, scrutiny around government. Just as laypeople, how the country is dealing with a pandemic, this number that we are getting every day. We regularly hear about the numbers of the weekend over the, there is a delay in reporting, then this lip with the technical data. I guess its going to be a couple of days yet, are we still on the upward project area and is it even worse than we thought . I think thats right. 0ver than we thought . I think thats right. Over the last few months about various things hes had. It seems like kind of the capacity is going up again. The ministers often ask us for a seven running total. How things are doing over the course of the week. Looking at what happens over the next few days. There has been a lot of criticism. We have the labour leader suggesting this morning in the papers, the observer that the government doesnt have control of what is going on. Im sure that he will be making a case for what has been done but were getting to that kind of complicated path of the response to the pandemic and the government wants them to say here is what is going on, its simple and it makes sense but these figures dont make thatjob any easier. At least two people have died and dozens more are missing after a powerful storm hit Southern France and northern italy. Villages around the french city of nice have suffered serious damage, with the mayor calling it the worst flooding in living memory. In italys piedmont region the situation has been described as extremely critical roads and bridges have been washed away by floodwater. Prince george hasjoined his siblings to ask Sir David Attenborough a question about animals. Its a rare glimpse of the children speaking and the first time weve heard from the little brother, prince louis. The children arejoining Sir David Attenborough and the duke and duchess of cambridge in a documentary airing on itv tomorrow. The duke is calling for action to tackle climate change, just like the commitment shown in combating coronavirus. Ive always believed its possible to give the young people hope. Look at that . And belief that things can get fixed. I have always believed that its possible that if we all work together, we can make a difference. Frankie mccamley, bbc news. Im going to play my daughter that whole video that is on social media. The royal children talking to David Attenborough that right at the end, hes asked, which the better pet, a cat or a dog and he goes with a puppy cat or a dog and he goes with a puppy rather than a kitten. That is going to cause something of a controversy at mason towers. The world over. One of the biggest controversies you can throw out. There will be the pro dog lobby, wont there . There will be that alongside those making a case for cats but i look forward to that arty discussion. Lets return to our main story. Donald trump has been speaking from the hospital where hes being treated for coronavirus. The us president says he feels better, but that the next few days will be the real test for him. Were joined now by political reporter meg kinnard, from the Associated Press. Good morning to you, thank you for your time. Can you give us an update . What is the general state of the president s health . Update . What is the general state of the president s health . As far as i understand it, and good morning to you all, i know the president is still receiving medication and treatment at Walter Reed Military Centre in bethesda, maryland. Hes been there and is experiencing from what weve heard, flulike symptoms, hes had a fever although his doctors say he has been fever free. Is also receiving medications that could ring that lever down so it is unknown if you would have been feverish at that point but the president released a video, that he is feeling better but times, it seems he hasnt been feeling all that great. We also did learn that friday before he left the white house, he did receive supplemental oxygen which of course, when patients are being treated for covid 19, that is a concern and something to take note of. His doctors say he hasnt been receiving any more oxygen and by all accounts, they say the next 7 10 days shows what will be happening with the president s condition. What will be happening with the president s condition. That is the critical timescale. We dont really know when we will will have got this virus but to you develop small symptoms, its likely to happen in that timeframe which is i guess why they are being ultra cautious but its hard to know, with all information swirling around, slightly mixed messages from his people, the hospital itself, what the true story isnt also how i suppose we as an audience audience have been played here because there are so many different agendas on the go, arent there . Because there are so many different agendas on the go, arent there . M isa agendas on the go, arent there . M is a little confusing when you take what he heard from his doctors in their initial News Conference and their initial News Conference and the information that some of my collea g u es the information that some of my colleagues at the Associated Press received from white house officials, contradicting exactly how the president s vital signs had been since he was admitted to walter reed on how serious the situation was. There have been differences of opinion as to what is going on. Clearly the president wants to project a situation and position of strength and doesnt want anyone to think he is weaker than he actually is but obviously it is concerning for a nation its already been on edge along with the rest of the globe during this pandemic, not to mention the president ial election that will be happening here injust a month. Just remind us, this will be hugely disruptive to his campaigning but there is no possibility as far as i understand it that this will delay the election state thats not being discussed by anyone who would have the to do that. President trump has said in those around him have said, he wont be on the campaign trail like used to stop events with thousands of attendees, thousands of la rge scale events where he gets his message to the people, if he does any campaigning while he is receiving treatment, it will be virtual. Mike pence is tested negative the covid 19 so the plan still is for him to go out on behalf of the president as well and stump for their re election but certainly, were not going to see over the next couple of weeks at least, the same sort of campaigning that has been the stock in trade for President Trump since he announced his first run in 2015. Which puts a question over the next president ial debate on the 15th of over. We will have to wait and see. What Aboutjoe Biden . How does he play this because the American Networks are going to be rolling constantly the news about resident, no matter what some would say that can be beneficial to his campaign. In some ways it does seem joe biden has a bit of an edge, at least in terms of being able to be out campaigning. There are a handful of ground estates here in this campaign which are very crucial to the election either man is the next president , those states where the divide between democrats and republicans is not a very large. And sojoe biden, republicans is not a very large. And so joe biden, who republicans is not a very large. And sojoe biden, who has been doing Virtual Events a lot over the past six months or so of the pandemic, he will be out campaigning in person much more than before, whereas the opposite will be true for President Trump, should he campaign at all. So yes, the president will be on tv a lot, and the focus will be on hoping that he gets better soon, but on the other hand, joe biden will be able to ta ke other hand, joe biden will be able to take his message directly to the american people. And in the next hour of the programme we will be speaking to a Critical Care doctor who will be able to describe the treatment he has been receiving. Also worth pointing out that there is lots of discussion about where and how this virus was transmitting in the unicorn of the white house team. Given how many have tested positive. Exactly. There was this eventin positive. Exactly. There was this event in the rose garden, at the white house, for the nomination of the Supreme Court judge, white house, for the nomination of the Supreme Courtjudge, and lots of people, we saw the pictures there, hugging, in close proximity. All of which feels pretty strange, watching it. They were outside, but hardly anybody was wearing a Face Covering and then there was lots of, yes, very 2019 bear hug is going on. And close face to face contact. Very 2019 bear hug is going on. And close facetoface contact. Yes, none of that keeping a distance thing we have all been getting used to. Good morning. Thank you for all your pictures, by the way, if you are doing a virtual London Marathon today. Taking part in the marathon, covering the distance but doing it in your own neck of the woods rather than in london, where the elite athletes are. In fact, the women are just starting about now in london. Cat is there, we will talk to her internal 15 minutes. The big challenge, whether you are in london or anywhere, chris, with the weather, is doing the marathon in early october, which means there is a reasonable chance of getting wet, and on this particular weekend, even the weather over the past few days, pretty much a guarantee of getting wet . You are absolutely right. I dont know if runners can use those waterproof socks, but he would need Something Like that. We have seen a lot of rain. Here are the figures for the month so far, 0ctober lot of rain. Here are the figures for the month so far, october is only four days old but gloucestershire has already seen well over a months worth of rain in the past few days. We have more rain to come into forecast as as we go through the day. This area of low pressure, that has brought those storms over parts of italy and france, who have seen severe flooding. For us, it is rain bearing cloud that has been working in the rain has been pretty persistent, really, through most of saturday, for a good number of you. It has continued overnight and it will continued overnight and it will continue for a good of sunday as well. The met office continue to have their amber weather warning in force across parts of wales, the West Midlands, and south west england. 0ver West Midlands, and south west england. Over the high ground we could see as much as 120 millimetres of rain so flooding is quite likely. Through the day we will see rain pivoting away, the weather brightening up here. They were today for Northern Ireland, with strong winds, gale force around the coast. Reluctant to clear away from the south coast of wales in southern england, where it is cold. The temperature only 11 through the afternoon. We will see showers pushing in and brightest guys for Northern England, parts of north wales and the midlands as well. The number of flood warnings continues to increase. 30 in scotland at the moment, another ten in england, things will probably get worse before they get better, given that we will see more wet weather. 0vernight tonight the rain will start to gradually ease away from Northern Ireland, and a good chunk of southern england as well. Continuous rain across parts of the south west, so further rainfall accumulations here, showers again affect of eastern scotland and Northern England overnight. Then, going through the forecast for monday, tuesday and wednesday, well, this is the same area of low pressure that is loitering, it is one of those stuck weather systems in many respects, and there will be slightly brighter weather for many of us. A more showery picture for scotland, england and wales. Some of the showers will be heavy and frequent across eastern areas. Rain moves back and across Northern Ireland. The windy and wet day here and quite cool as well, 14 for belfast, but given some sunshine, 15 or16 belfast, but given some sunshine, 15 or 16 celsius between those heavy downpours. Further showers to come on tuesday and if anything goes showers could actually merge together across england and wales to give lengthy spells of rain, possibly. Further north, showers for scotla nd possibly. Further north, showers for scotland and Northern Ireland, with temperatures between 13 and 16 celsius. More rain to come through sunday. Quite likely to see further localised flooding impacts as well. Back to you two. Localised flooding impacts as well. I had to have the leak man in the other day. The leak man . Also known as the plumber . No, it was a roofer, because it was a door frame. Thats no fun. Pitter patter into a bucket. At least you are time because normally to time of year you are out on the road . Thats true. Usually at this time of year id be travelling around the country, reporting on the various Political Party conferences as the season gets underway. I was thinking about where i would have been, what i would have one. The conservatives were going to be in birmingham, labourwould have beenin in birmingham, labourwould have been in liverpool, i dont know weather lib dem s work, i think perhaps in brighton. Those are the usual conference venues, and there is another conference going on. The green party of england and Wales Holding their conference, ditching the big venue, with people mingling around and all the usual stuff, to do things remotely. Lets bring in jonathan bartley, do things remotely. Lets bring in jonathan ba rtley, the do things remotely. Lets bring in jonathan bartley, the coleader of the green party. Good morning to you. There you are on your sofa in south london. Where would you have been, jonathan . Where was the Conference Due to be . been, jonathan . Where was the Conference Due to be . I think we we re Conference Due to be . I think we were always really thinking that it was going to be a Virtual Conference for us, that is why we have got the long nine day affair, is that we thought we needed to take an assessment of the situation and the safest thing to do was to have it virtually, to get online voting for the first time, all our policies set by our membership so we had to work out ways of getting everybody to vote at the same time from all different places in the country. It has been a task to put it all together. That does sound like a complex logistical endeavour. So, jonathan, talk us through what kind of headline idea is for you guys in your conference . I guess over the last six months, because of the virus, in ourown last six months, because of the virus, in our own way, we have all been living a little more of a green life and perhaps were used to, doing less travelling, working from home for lots of people. To what extent cannot be grounded as a reality, as we move out of the pandemic . I guess that is the big challenge . It is the big challenge. We sat in our speech on friday that we are at an absolutely pivotal moment, and we have got to see this moment, and we have got to see this moment through, with all the horror of the pandemic, i think in peoples response to it, when peoples response to it, when people came together in their local communities, when businesses adapted in the most amazing ways, when we saw our sense of solidarity in the community, but gave us a glimpse that we can change and we can make things better, even in these terrible circumstances. So we are putting forward ideas for a green new deal, we have heard the government talking about reskilling and changing peoples lives and jobs to give the new opportunities. But we need those jobs to give the new opportunities. But we need thosejobs in place. We need those jobs. So we need thosejobs in place. We need thosejobs. So a big, Bold Programme to make new jobs, thosejobs. So a big, Bold Programme to make newjobs, newjobs and a green economy, but also social justice and environmentaljustice being absolutely integral. We want to see. Inaudible. A real safety net to protect people in this pandemic, which we are not seen from this government. Given how increasingly prominent Environmental Issues are, with the deep concern that there is around climate change, for instance, why is the green party not cutting through more . I was looking back at the statistics, i think it was 2. 7 of the vote back in the general election. Shouldnt you be doing much better, given the prominence of Environmental Issues in the news almost every day of the week . Well, there are two issues there. Are we cutting through . Absolutely. Climate has never been higher in the agenda, right through the general election campaign, we we re the general election campaign, we were framing a setting that agenda. But people are voting for other parties, that is the point. We saw in the local elections, in the european elections, council elections, we finished ahead of the conservatives. The first past the post system in the general election does make it tough to break through, but we thought we would try to do something different, with the liberal democrats, if you remember, because the whole framing of the election was very much around brexit. But we had the first climate debate that we were present in, every single debate people were running to catch up with us, and i have lost count of the number of times people have stopped me on the streets and said, thank you for what you did in the general election. I think there is no doubt that we cut through, in no uncertain terms. Extinction rebellion, are you co mforta ble Extinction Rebellion, are you comfortable with the way they go about campaigning . Extinction rebellion, we have criticised them where we think they have gone wrong and we have praised them where we think they went right. We are fellow travellers with a lot of different movements, saying that time is running out. Precisely where have they gone wrong, in your view . think, there was a particular incident on the tube, if you think back about a year ago now, where some campaigners overstepped the mark. That would be an example of where they went wrong. I need to put my hand up and say i have spoken with Extinction Rebellion at their rallies. I was myself arrested, and then of course the charges were dropped because it was shown the police had acted wrongly, and actually themselves illegally, in that particular case. I guess the counterargument of the criticism some have made of extension rebellion and their tactics is that they get noticed, and in that sense, are they somewhat stealing your thunder, or do you need to fold yourself together as a single organisation, perhaps . We have a lwa ys organisation, perhaps . We have always said this is a wider movement. Some people take on court cases, some People Campaign and protest in the streets. We are the political arm of a much wider movement, and when you have got people raising the alarm, you need people raising the alarm, you need people to be implementing it in parliament, in local councils, passing legislation at the local level. We need politicians to bring about the change. It is knowing our place within that movement, and what sorts of different, if you like, aspects that are to the push that we need to make. To be clear, would you merge with them, given the chance . Well, no, they are a different thing. They are a campaigning group. You are a campaigning group. You are a campaigning group, you are a Political Party. I wonder where the distinction is . Why not throw your lot in together . The distinction is that we stand for election, we put ourselves forward between elections and during elections to bring about change that we need to see in local authorities, for example in london, with my colleague standing for the mayor of london, showers a London Assembly member and showers comes attlee, from her elect position, putting the political pressure through voting on sadiq khan, the mouth. Extension rebellion setting the agenda much more widely and getting us talking. That is why we are having this conversation now. Good to talk to you. Jonathan barclay there, the coleader of the green party in england and wales. The Andrew Marr Show is on bbc one at 9 00. Good morning, andrew. A big morning. I enjoyed live in the studio by Prime MinisterBoris Johnson. I enjoyed live in the studio by Prime Minister borisjohnson. They are also running the virtual London Marathon with their dogs, with the alzheimers society, and it is just an extraordinary thing. By chance, they happened to be here as well. You have robbed brenda with you, and you guys met in namibia, is that white . Without wanting to emphasise the point, climatically, things were different. Rob brinder. Climatically, things were entirely different, i would say the only similarity is that good luck the only similarity is being present in Louise Minchins badass energy. When i discovered she was doing this today for agk i had to be here, but like a lot of people, i got down in lockdown and just wanted to be present in the sheer delight of running behind Louise Minchin, which, if anybody is down, if you have ever got the chance to do it, you have to do it stop she has like the pied piper of happy. I could have made our lives easier, we could have done a nice, flat run and instead i chose an off road trail run, which will be very slippery, and the weather, the rain has stopped in the last ten minutes or so so it might be ok for an hourorso. Minutes or so so it might be ok for an hour or so. That is seriously impressive, louise. Tell us a bit about how your training has been affected by what has been going on over the past few months. Would you have kept up with the schedule you have kept up with the schedule you have done anyway . The truth is, no. I have not. I really have not. 0bviously i have not. I really have not. Obviously the London Marathon was meant to happen in april, so i was training for that when i saw rob brinder in the media and i was quite fit then. Then it got cancelled, pushed back to october, and obviously it became a virtual race. Its obviously it became a virtual race. Its not going to stop us today. Obviously it became a virtual race. Its not going to stop us today. feel like the wind last night will have helped us. Rob is not even doing it officially, are you . This is friendship for you. Hes not even doing it officially and genuinely if id woken up this morning with the pouring rain in the dark, i would have cried. I am a delighted entourage. To run along somebody much pep enjoy, and i love running on the long weekend, and just to be pa rt of on the long weekend, and just to be part of the happy support group, to do the windowdressing. Its extraordinary. Those three ladies with the dogs, who are miles ahead of us in on the way here, there were people running in the dark and i literally wound down the window and i was like, are you doing the London Marathon . 45,000 people, plus one, running this marathon at different times, on trails or courses of their choice. Its an extraordinary atmosphere. Wed better let you go to keep up with the guys who set off for you. Do you know what, they went the wrong way. Your laugh at them going the wrong way, louise. It isa see Eliud Kipchoge go head to head. It is a bit ofa see Eliud Kipchoge go head to head. It is a bit of a shame. Its athletics, injuries come along. But we have four of the top ten fastest men ever and i know its going to be an amazing battle. These conditions make it more bearable. And the fact that training has been happening. I know that Eliud Kipchoges odds a very short and he is the most amazing athlete but that could be an upset. I forgot to mention those 45,000 other runners running in Virtual Reality. Its got to feel real there. Raising all that money for charity because charities have been so badly hit by the pandemic. Is money raised going to make up for the shortfall . We dont think it will but we hope that britain gets behind the runners during the 26. 2 miles from their home in their communities a runner called aaron plummer, go on line and look at his story. When he talks about, you can do it, his whole persona, isjoy about running. Go on line and support him. Thank you so much for making time. The race director there. Further outbreaks of rain, the rain will tend to ease slowly from Northern Ireland, but persistent across the south west. Showers for eastern areas. For most of us, around nine or 10 degrees. We will speak to in toina to in a bit. This week louise spoke to Sir David Attenborough ahead of his new documentary and book a life on our planet. In this World Exclusive interview he talks about everything from Extinction Rebellion to shielding during lockdown. I am David Attenborough. Ive had the most extraordinary life. Its only now that i appreciate how extraordinary. The living world is a unique and spectacular marvel. Yet the way we humans live on earth is sending it into a decline. Human beings have overrun the world. So David Attenborough, what an absolute pleasure to be able to speak to on bbc breakfast. Where are we now, where will you assess it . Since i made the First Television programme, three times as many people on the planet and we have overrun it. And now we are realising what appalling damage weve done and asked them how much we are dependent upon the Natural World. Every breath of air we take, every mouth of food that we eat comes from the Natural World. And if we damage it, we damage ourselves. When did you realise that we were very possibly on the path as far as you see it . The first time i had indubitable proof was back in the 60s, i suppose, when i swam on a coral reef in australia and saw a damaged reef and it was a terrible sight. Its like a cemetery because colourful coral, swarms of wonderfulfish, had now become bleached white. They can recover but not from repeated assaults and increases in temperature. That was a sign to me that humanity is capable of exterminating whole communities, enormous communities of living creatures. Id been making Television Programmes and certainly the last 20, 30 years, i started each of them by saying look, the world is in peril, we are damaging it and it is all humanitys vault and very little has happened and yet suddenly, within the last five years maybe, suddenly its as though people have been woken up and its young people, really, young people who have shared their confidences and not before time. Hello, my name is David Attenborough and ive been appearing on radio and television for the past 60 years. But this is my first time on instagram. And i making this move and exploring this new way of communication to me because, as we all know, the world is in trouble. Congratulations, you are the fastest person to get to 1 million followers on instagram. I dont know if you know that. I saw it in the paper this morning. Why instagram and why now . Well, i am so old, its difficult to teach an old dog new tricks. Im not a great use of social media and i hadnt used it before but the message im concerned about is so important, i will use any medium to get it. If we carry on to this part we are all on, how bad will it be, what will our planet look like . One of the things that will happen is the world will get hotter and hotter and hotter, thats not news, thats been happening for a very long time. And deserts are spreading. Why are people coming across from hot places to fertile places where they can grow their own food . Because the world is changing. That is one thing, but we all are so clever, we are so ingenious, we can now strip the seas in an industrial way, strip it of all the fish that are there, we are reducing it in such numbers that it will effectively destroy the population. You seem to have, and there is a particular moment in the film, where we can really get a sense of your feeling of grief, but you 01 47 26,1000 01 47 30,569 dont despair, do you . Why not . I dont despair because what will you go and do, just go hide in the corner crying in the corner and giving up . We have a responsibility. If there is only a fragment of hope left, you have a responsibility to do something about it which is why we are here. There is one choice to make today, what choice would you like people to make mr mark dont waste. Dont waste electricity. Dont waste food. Dont waste power. Just treat the Natural World as if its precious, which it is, and dont squander. There are bits of it we have control. In the face of huge countries like china and the United States and russia doing things, it seems irrelevant sometimes. We cant take that as an excuse for doing nothing. We must do everything all of us can do and must do, and china is taking very big steps in many directions. Its a huge country with an immense population. And they are starting doing things about sorting out the climate and weather which of course has such problems so china is moving in the right direction. I agree the present administration in america is controversial at the moment, disastrous, but there we are, thats who was elected and we have to go through it. You talk about cost because there is also personal cost and you talk about making changes to our lives. What was the thing that you changed to sort of cost you personally the most . I would like to think, for the last six months, ive hardly moved out of this house. I cant pretend that ive changed my transport. Transport behaviour very much. But we are doing so, arent we . Im not flying away to all sorts of places. How would you describe lockdown life . I cant plead a bad time. I think when i was newly married, with a couple of kids in a flat with just two rooms and no garden and thinking what it would be like at the thought of the oncoming autumn and winter that was going to be ahead of us, having already been locked away for six months. That seems to me a pretty tough number. I know it is inevitable. I know it has to happen. And many people are having a much worse time than i am. I am lucky. I have a garden. I have a house. And we are surviving, my daughter and i are surviving very well. But it is going to be very, very rough for a lot of people. But one does missing people, friends, walking around. You got a lot of books to read over the next few months. Have you read them all . Chapter 13. Can we talk a little bit about Extinction Rebellion because you talk about lobbying mps and all of that. What about direct action . In getting a change, you have to be careful you dont break the law, i think. I also think that we have to create the people we share our community with, with respect. Thanks treat. And disturbing their lives to such an extent innocent people cant get about their own business is a serious thing to do and could disenchant an awful lot of people. Instagram and other ways of social media, you do have a chance to reach out to a different audience, but there is a real sense, we have so many people getting in touch with questions, that the younger generation, seem to be, many of them are on board. How does that make you feel . Thats the great hope. That is the most important hope, the most important place where there should be hope. Its their world and its there tomorrow. I will not be there. They will be. Its theirs. If they are not persuaded its important, we are wasting our time. Young people should be concerned about this. Weve seen videos, these little children, and they are absolutely adorable. Hi, david. I would like to know whats your favourite places, and how theyve changed . My favourite place was a woodland in the middle of england, in lincolnshire. And it had rocks around it which were full of fossils. Wonderful things, shells, some of them big ones. And sometimes you could hit a rock sometimes they were sitting out there and you just turned over the rock and there it was. And it was you were the first person ever to see that. And it hadnt seen the sun for maybe 150 million years. Think about that hi, my names elliott and i am six years old and i have a question. What is your favourite dinosaur . Well, elliott, there was a huge animal that flew over the dinosaurs, as big as a small aeroplane, called quetzalcoatlus. And it had huge wings, just as big as an aeroplane. And it was the biggest animal that everflew, and none of us could work out how it got off the ground, because how do you beat the wings . Its a mystery. Hello, david. My name is anais and im three years old. Whats your favourite animal . I dont really have a favourite animal, to be truthful. But there is a fish i am very fond of called um, whats it called now . Its called the weedy sea dragon, and it lives in the seas off South Australia and its fins look exactly like bits of seaweed. Hi, my name is harry and im 11 years old and i want to work in zoology, but with the current climate crisis, i would like to know if there will be any animals left in the world to study. There will certainly be enough animals individually. There wont be as many different animals as we have now. I can be pretty sure of that. But we need to study them, we need to know all we can about them in order to protect them and help them, so i hope you do go to university and you do study zoology and you do help in the struggle to care for nature. I am william and im four years old. Who do you think would win out of a lion, hippopotamus and a rhino . Well, it would depend whether they were in the river or not, wouldnt they . If they were in the river it would be the hippopotamus. If they were on land, i think it would be the lion. But im not sure, actually, because a hippopotamus is very big, you know, it weighs much more than a lion. So if it rolled over, and it got the wild lion underneath it, the lion wouldnt like that very much. Hi, david. My name is called evie, and im four years old. Whats the biggest spider ever in the whole wide world . And my mummy doesnt like spiders. Well, i can see why your mummy doesnt like spiders, though there are none in this country that bite you. Theres one, certainly in south america, which is as big as your hand, really. And very hairy legs. And you dont want to mess with that, because that one does have a nasty bite. That was a David Attenborough talking to Louise Minchin and young viewers earlier this week. Later we will be talking to a great gran who is 90 and about tojump out of a plane. Morning to patricia and her daughter carol. Tell us about what you are up to in a bit . It is going to be quite a morning for you hello . Hello, good morning. Tell us about this skydive that you are about this skydive that you are about to do. What do you want to know . Laughter. Why . I suppose that is what it boils down to. Why not . Its for my birthday. 0r is what it boils down to. Why not . Its for my birthday. Or it was. Carol, your mum says to you on her 90th, ive got an idea, im going to jump 90th, ive got an idea, im going to jump out of a plane. What was your reaction . I wasnt too surprised she was going to do it, but i said, come on, if you want to do it, lets do it. Here we are, waiting tojump within minutes. Pat, tell us about why you are doing it and tell us about your great grandson max . Why you are doing it and tell us about your greatgrandson max . Max, he is ata about your greatgrandson max . Max, he is at a special school, an autistic school, and i am doing it for him. How has the preparation been . What did you have to do to get in shape . Hectic, absolutely hectic for three days. We have got to go, we have got the cameraman here, sorry, weve got to get dressed and we are ready to go while the weather is fine. Go on then, off you go. Perhaps we will catch up with you later on, because this has been quite a tease for us. We would love to see how it goes. If i could just tell you a bit more, because we didnt get the full story there. Pat is 90 years old and some of her friends were saying, for my 90th, i have a bucket list. Im going to do x, y, z. Have a bucket list. Im going to do x, y, 2. But have a bucket list. Im going to do x, y, z. Butjust said she wanted to jump x, y, z. Butjust said she wanted to jump out of a plane, so that is what she is doing. She had to be passed as medical if it by her doctor so she had to go through a series of tests. Lots of situps, trying to build up their strength. We will catch up with them tomorrow, actually. Tomorrow, ok. I am sure we will have tv footage of it as well. It sounds like she is up for it. do like direct answers to direct questions. Why . Why not . We are here on the bbc news channel until nine oclock this morning, and we will be hearing from brits stuck abroad and unable to fly home after they keep testing positive for coronavirus weeks after they first caught it. All the headlines coming up over on the bbc news channel, but this is the bbc news channel, but this is the point where we say goodbye to you on bbc one. Goodbye for now. Good morning, welcome to breakfast with chris mason and rachel burden. 0ur headlines today in a video from hospital, President Trump says hes doing well but will continue coronavirus treatment for a few more critical days. So ijust want to tell you that im starting to feel good. You dont know over the next period of a few days, i guess thats the real test, so well be seeing what happens over the next couple of days. The uk registers almost 13,000 daily coronavirus cases nearly doubling from the day before. The government says a technical issue is to blame. And prince george, Princess Charlotte and prince louis ask Sir David Attenborough about the future of our planet. Good morning. Its another wet day for quite a few of us today. Met Office Amber Warnings remain in force and we are quite likely to see some flooding building in as we go through the day. Ill have more details coming up a little bit later on. Its sunday 4th october. Our top story. Donald trump has released a video from hospital, where he says hes feeling better but that the next few days will be the real test. rachel the president was admitted for treatment after testing positive for coronavirus earlier this week. The video comes after a day of mixed messages over his health, as our north america correspondent peter bowes reports. Donald trumps a first full day in hospital, a day of confusion and concern over the president s health with mixed messages coming from his doctors and the white house. And then later in the day a tweet from the president and another video, an update from mr trump on his condition. I came here, wasnt feeling so well. I feel much better now. We are working hard to get me all the way back. I have to be back. When he addressed reporters outside Walter Reed Medical Center earlier the president s personal physician said mr trumps symptoms, a mild cough, nasal congestion and fatigue, were no eresolving and improving. But he was vague on whether the president had needed oxygen at any point. Cough, nasal congestion and fatigue, were no eresolving and improving. But he was vague on whether the president had needed oxygen at any point. Has he ever been on supplemental oxygen . Right now he is not on oxygen. You keep saying right now but should we read into the fact that he had been previously . Yesterday and today he is not on oxygen. He has not been on it during his Covid Treatment. Hes not an oxygen right now. It later emerged that mr trump had received oxygen at the white house before he was admitted to hospital. There was further confusion when the white house chief of staff mark meadows indicated to reporters at the hospital that the president was still not in a clear path to a full recovery. There is a consensus that the next few days will be crucial. Donald trump has been given to experimental drugs which its hoped will speed up his recovery from covid 19. Im starting to feel good. You dont know over the next period of a few days, i guess thats a real test. So well be seeing what happens over those next couple of days. Mr trump also sought to explain his decision not to shelter at home from the virus. I had no choice because ijust didnt want to stay in the white house. I was given that alternative. Stay in the white house, lock yourself in, dont ever leave, dont even go to the oval office, just stay upstairs and enjoy it. Dont see people, dont talk to people and just be done with it. And i cant do that. With the president in hospital there is growing concern that more members of his inner circle are also testing positive for the virus. Many of them attended what has been described as a super spreader event at the white house last weekend when mr trump named his nominee for the vacant seat at the Supreme Court. They include the former governor of newjersey Chris Christie who has checked himself into hospital with a slight fever. This is a crisis that has engulfed the Trump Administration less than a month before the election. Nick, what do we know about the technical error . Basically what the government is saying is the figure was so high yesterday because it included a lot of test not properly over a week period between 24th of september in the 1st of october. We do not know when those tests were taken so we dont know what it means for the other days in which he figures have gone up and down but what the government is saying is we shouldnt necessarily take that figure at face value because it does include those previous test. Is this likely to bring the governments handling of the pandemic under yet more scrutiny . Yeah, ithink yeah, i think so. There have been a lot of questions over the testing numbers and the ways theyve been compiled and released, with southern flop great, going down sundays and going up some, so some questions about that and we have seen an increased question of how the government is performing, the labour leader in the observer this morning saying he thinks theyve lost control, weve seen some criticism from tory mps who are wondering how the government is handling all this. We will see more of them trying to get on the front foot with the virtual conservative conference not taken place and person but online and you will hear from borisjohnson later today. He is on the andrew r show so we will hear some defence of the government position but that scrutiny is increasing and there are louder questions being asked with regards to how they are approaching all of this. At least two people have died and dozens more are missing after a powerful storm struck parts of france and italy. pres storm alex after a powerful storm struck parts of france and italy. Storm alex has brought torrential rain and severe flooding causing several rivers to burst their banks around the french city of nice and in italy some roads and bridges have been washed away by floodwater. Mark lobel reports. Catastrophic scenes for this french commune. Yelling. An intense rescue effort to get out in time. Roads, bridges and homes washed away. An elderly couple took refuge on the roof of this house but their home was swept down the river. Translation we tried to convince them to come out and unfortunately, we didnt succeed. The road manager managed to reach his hand out to the lady and tried to tell her to come out, but nothing. And in the end, the whirlwind crashed right through the house and the house floated away, and them with it. Frances Prime Minister has announced Financial Support and deployed the army to help these crushed communities. The priority is to find the victims, he says, and provide accommodation for those affected, as well as restore the means of communication for those hardest hit. In northern italy, roads and bridges were swept away too. Residents rescued from their roofs. But not everyone was so lucky. A firefighter lost his life, and a man in his 30s, whose car was swept into a river. Beach clubs were flooded. Towns destroyed. And on italys coast, it was not business as usual. More than 40,000 people from all over the world will take part in the first ever virtual London Marathon today. Only the elite athletes will run together, completing the 26. 2 miles around stjamess park in london. 0ther runners will be able to take part wherever they are by using an app to track their progress. Those are the main news stories but lets return to our top story. Less than 24 hours after President Donald Trump was flown by helicopter to hospital, hes released a video to say he is feeling much better. In the video, he thanked staff at the Walter Reed Hospital in washington, and promised he would be back at work soon. Werejoined now by dr zaher sahlul, a Critical Care doctor in salt lake city. We appreciate you taking time to talk to us. Walk through well you think youre at medically with the president at the moment because there is always concerned, if a handful of days in, to someone testing positive that that is the point where things yes, he has been admitted to the hospital. That means the virus has affected his one and breathing. Most likely, you received some oxygen. This is the early stage of the disease since the start of the symptoms, so the first week of the symptoms, so the first week of the virus, the infection, and this is when you get the complications in the lungs and other issues, and that is when you receive the complications or the monoclonal cocktail, which reduces the impact of the virus on the body cells. Its still very early to decide whether you will go either way. The next week or so will be crucial to decide whether you will have more symptoms, having more complications to pneumonia or related to other complications due to the viruslike thrombosis, blood clot or the hyper inflammation you see sometimes in patients with severe infections. Inflammation you see sometimes in patients with severe infectionsm the president so you would expect him to get the best medical attention possible but i wonder with the various drugs is been given, the extent he is getting different care from perhaps a typical american of the same age that he is with the same underlying concerns around his weight and the other factors that would him at greater risk. He he has multiple risk factors, including his age. They would tend to have more severe disease. It is more likely they would be in hospital than the popular generation, five times more likely. And sometimes up to 30 of patients being hospitalised. He is overweight and the fact that he has male increases risk. Patients with mild symptoms normally do not get these kind of things, so this is different from the usual protocol from this type of medication here in the United States. He also received an experimental antibodies which is unusual. You dont give patients that have mild disease medication which has not been approved for the public yet. Anyone catching this virus and suffering with will understandably regard themselves as u nfortu nate understandably regard themselves as unfortunate but given what we know now about the virus versus what new six months ago, the range of possible treatments for the president or anyone else are greater than they were back in march or april. We know more about how to treat it compared with six months ago, so patients will have severe infections or pneumonia, and its not known if he is getting the medication to reduce the information. We provide other medications, like using the plasma from patients who have recovered from patients who have recovered from the disease and other medication to reduce inflammation. He has not received any of that. Most of the time, we also give what thinner because this virus would reduce the risk of blood clots in the veins, the lungs and he has not received that, so there is still other medication that can be given to him if he has more complications to him if he has more complications to the virus. We do not know how we will be over the coming weeks with lets look at the best Case Scenario that gets better quickly and within a couple of weeks, might be able to be out and about again. Is it likely, even in that scenario, he would feel underpowered in what would feel underpowered in what would be the final stages of a president ial campaign having come through battling the virus . Yes, this is a virus that can affect the body and phases. It can feel better today and tomorrow hit really hard and feel very fatigued. He can have more oxygen feeling dizzy, fatigue, week and have more suppression with people in intensive care unit like the Prime Minister borisjohnson. You may need to be on a ventilator. Definitely the virus complications and the symptoms make it worse and that will affect your stamina and affect his performance, and the way you will conduct himself. You may have to transfer power to Vice President so all these questions are there and unpredictable because we do not know this virus behaviour, when it affects individuals, and clearly everyone is worried that he is not out of the woods yet. The next 7 10 days will determine which direction youll go. Next 7 10 days will determine which direction youll go. You. You are appreciated. He was pointing out that the president has access to certain medications that ordinary americans do not have access to. The outcry Boris Johnson americans do not have access to. The outcry borisjohnson had preferential treatment would have been enormous. It would have been a very different picture. There is a lot of criticism in the United States about the medical briefings we have had in the last 24 hours and a contrast that with the experience of the uk and borisjohnson when we had very little and certainly didnt see doctors coming out and addressing the cameras. A very different approach to the extent you talk publicly about the health of leaders. Lets get the weather. I suspect this is what is dominating the thoughts of most people. A little less grim for a few of you but we have had a lot of rain over the last few days. These are a three day rain totals. In gloucestershire 109 millimetres of rain which is a lot more than we would normally see for the whole month of october and we had only four days then. We have seen similar rainfall totals in eastern scotland and aberdeenshire. This weather front has become particularly slow moving draped across the uk. It has brought persistent rain throughout the weekend over saturday and saturday night and some more rain on the radar picture right now. There will be some changes in the by the picture is the day goes by but we still have that met Office Amber Weather Warning across wales and the midlands and parts of the west of england. Across parts of Northern England. Across parts of Northern England and southern eastern scotland, north wales and parts of the midlands and maybe not folk we should see the worst of the rain clear through the afternoon with sunshine and showers following n. Quite a windy day particularly with the rain band lingers and in Northern Ireland a big difference to what we had yesterday. Today persistent outbreaks of rain and windy with gates around the north course. Temperature struggling, particularly in the south. 11 degrees in london. Flood warnings continue to increase. 31 in scotland and another 11 in england. We will see some further flooding as the day goes by and as todays rain works into high river catchments. 0vernight into high river catchments. Overnight in the worst of the rain tends to clear and all but the far south west of england. Elsewhere clear spells and some heavy showers particularly across scotland and Northern England. Temperatures between seven and 10 degrees. Into next week our area of low pressure has been bringing all the rain this weekend. Still on the chart through monday and tuesday and into wednesday. A particularly slow moving law. More rain in the forecast. The rain moves back into Northern Ireland. For scotland, england and wales a little less grim. Some dry weather and dry spells with sunshine but also heavy showers. Showers most frequent across Eastern England and central and eastern parts of scotland with a could be a bit of thunder. Tuesday is another sherry day with low pressure and charged that this time the showers are particularly across england and wales could merge to give longer spells of rain. Showers are crossed western scotland and Northern Ireland. Temperatures between 14 and 16 degrees. More rain in the forecast and we could see further Flooding Issues this weekend. A growing number of troubles are returning to england having tested positive for corona buyers. This man tested positive seven times. Day to day routine is generally the same and structured round at mealtimes. This my breakfast. Afterwards we get a quick five minute visit from a cleaner who wipes the floors and then a visit from a doctor who measures oxygen saturation and heart rate. You can see your friends in person and there is nothing your family can do and knowing that your family and friends are really upset and frustrated for you. I am still in futility trying to rid myself of any last remaining dead cells of virus. What i tend to do is take this tupperware and steam for about ten to 15 minutes and i have been also gargling salt water three times a day and drinking it down my nose to clear that up. When it is getting to the point some of the doctors have come to us and asked us what our results are before we even knew that isjust infuriating. They should be the one telling us this information. Everything is a bit confusing for us and we really dont know what the next step is and this is why we are really just next step is and this is why we are reallyjust hoping for some sort of influence and change from the British Government over here in italy so they can help us with our situation. They are not the only ones in that kind of situation. Lilyrose wallace is in a similar situation. She went on holiday to sicily with some of her friends at the start of september. Theyve now spent nearly three weeks in an isolation facility after repeatedly testing positive for the virus. We can speak to lilyrose now, and her mum beverly who joins us from london. At the start of september you went on holiday and it wasnt on the quarantine list, italy, the time and you are feeling well and healthy. What happened when he got to sicily . The first few days were time and no symptoms but the day we were supposed to fly back myself and a couple of my mates lost our sense of smell and our taste was affected a little bit and we had heard that one of our friends back home tested positive so then we decided to isolate and get tested. We all tested positive and were moved to this Coronavirus Hotel here. And thatis this Coronavirus Hotel here. And that is pretty much where we have been since. Described the sorts of conditions you are living in will stop is it similar to what we saw from the three lads also in isolation in italy . Very similar. Trapped in our own rooms cant see each other. Very grimy stop it is not clean. The cumin and missed the rooms once a week but there is a lot of hairand rooms once a week but there is a lot of hair and food and toenails on the floor. T t hey come in and mist. T hey come in and mist. You are not allowed out for a walk on your own . We briefly see each other when we get our rooms but that is it. Might get our food. That is the issue of positive tests coming back repeatedly and we will ask a doctor by that is happening. You have had up by that is happening. You have had up positive and inconclusive test . Three out of the tent as we have had been inconclusive and some of my mates tested negative first and positive the second time which is really soul crushing. The issue is italy requires it to negative test before they let you leave which even if it happens beyond the 14 day isolation period which is really problematic. What is it like for you asa problematic. What is it like for you as a mum at home listening to all of this . I think i can as a mum at home listening to all of this . I thinki can speak as a mum at home listening to all of this . I think i can speak on as a mum at home listening to all of this . I thinki can speak on behalf of all the families affected. It is entirely overwhelming because we are com pletely entirely overwhelming because we are completely out of any sense of being able to protect our children as a pa rent able to protect our children as a parent and that is what we would automatically usually do. I think it is also frustrating because of the testing. It feels as if there is a sense of almost a lack of rigour. So much emphasis is placed on these negative test coming back but as lily said we have gone from negative to positive and have had inconclusive which i feel means that is maybe an error in the lab. It is not really translated and the girls get the results in italian and then maybe somebody speaks to them in english. They have a wonderful consulate they are speaking to and he does help but it is all about the frustration of not knowing how definite or indefinite of this period is going to be. I have to say that having had the boys in florence might head the boys in florence and their story in the news has been hell for us to try to escalate a little faster and we want to help other people affected. Has been a help for us. In terms of going on holiday property didnt feel like this at the time but even she caught the virus at home she would have been at home with you and you would have been able to look after absolutely. There were no laws or rules are broken. At the time the Foreign Office had no restrictions on travel to italy and it still does not. Youre still free to travel there as a tourist and i think the italian ambassador said during the summer there would be no change at all more recently. It was advertising the country. And no facilities if anything went wrong. And actually it is notjust 14 days in isolation. The girls have done three weeks on monday and if they get two negative tests it will still be up toa get two negative tests it will still be up to a week i would say before they can even get home because there seems to be a lot of chaos in the hotel in terms of how results are related and timelines keep meandering and so much of the information coming through an italian which is confusing at a time when we are trying to focus on the girls and their well being. Isolation is a hard thing to go through, obviously. They get no physical exercise are no fresh air and they are high up. I do not know what floor thereon. They can see some kind of police outside. I think its quite an intimidating place to be. It sounds it. Is there anything while your mum is there that you can say to her because you can hear the anxiety and her voice . We are all missing our parents and missing home and hoping we can get back as soon as possible. Best of luck and lets hope it does resolve itself very soon. Thank you so much. The Foreign Office says consulate staff in italy are supporting british travellers quarantining in the country, and will continue to do all they can to help them. So why are some people repeatedly testing positive for covid weeks after their symptoms have gone . Were joined now by gp dr nighat arif. Why do these positive tests keep on rolling through . It is important to understand how the test is done. The test that lily rose and her mum beverley are talking about is the pcr test. It is a swab that goes at the back of the nose and throat and we ta ke the back of the nose and throat and we take some saliva. Then that is taken to the lab. They take it and try to detect the rna, the genetic material of the virus. And the test that makes billions of copies of the rna and the pathologist to whoever looks at the test knows it is a positive test. The world health 0rganization positive test. The World Health Organization and the centre of Disease Control actually a long time ago said that there are times when the test can actually come back positive even when the virus is not alive any more. For example, that is the difference. We have had this in the difference. We have had this in the uk with multiple health care professionals. For example nurses i have known who have had covid 19 and the test came back positive and they wa nted the test came back positive and they wanted to come back to work and we wa nted wanted to come back to work and we wanted to come back to work and we wanted to test them again and the test ca m e wanted to test them again and the test came back positive and one nurse had six consecutive test that came back positive. This is the crux of it because if youre testing positive but no longer contagious whether it be the nurse you refer to are lily rose are the lads we were hearing from you are still held up but of no risk to anyone. The theory is that fragments of the test still left behind but the test is not 100 of the test will still come back positive and those fragments are still little fragments and they are not fragments you can pass on. The differences if it is a lie finance you can transmit a live virus you can transmit just lingers around. You can transmit a live virus you can transmitjust lingers around. We are still looking at that. The best test to see if it is contagious is to do what is known as culturing and ta ke to do what is known as culturing and take a specimen of the virus and growth in the lab. But that requires time and has to be a specialised lab with high levels of virus security and thats something that is not available in hospitals. That is only solution . Is it . If people are continuing to return positive test after positive test despite having outwardly recovered from the virus is the only way they can prove if they are not contagious is if they go on for this complex and rather expensive process beyond the conventional test . The world health 0rganization conventional test . The World Health Organization and the centre for Disease Control have said people who test positive in consecutive tests it is not appropriate so there is a bit of common sense that has to play a role. We have known that for ages. 0ur nurse who tested positive several times not contagious any and are set to come back and see patients, exactly like lily rose. The World Health Organization have said if you have self isolated for days plus three and you are fine and not symptomatic then actually you can go back in business. This is the difference we are having with the Aviation Authority who see things slightly differently. You have to have all those test which are negative and then can be positive again and this is where the confusion is coming about. There is no consensus as beverley was saying and it is overwhelming and exhausting for anyone going through the process. Thank you for your expertise and enjoy your sunday. Im fine, i had a negative test myself which was ratifying as a result. A small prying but then we have the florence fun boy three. That shows you that as soon as you go to that shows you that as soon as you gotoa that shows you that as soon as you go to a different country, their country, their rules and i hope the british consumer it can help to spring them from italy. Clearly nobody wants to be on a plane with anybody who is contagious and they should go nowhere near an airport or anybody else but its a miserable situation for them to be in. A lot of have sympathy for them because they have gone to a country not in they have gone to a country not in the red list and done a lot right but they probably just were not aware. Does that rule apply for other countries . The rules are incredibly complex. You have to go through all the available documentation from the foreign 0ffice documentation from the Foreign Office and individual countries to find out what will happen if you are symptomatic while abroad. Meanwhile, in cambodia, not that it will let british holiday makers in any time soon, you have to put down a 3000 deposit and if you do test positive, you are. Under house arrest as kind rather than people in italy, lithuania because of the rapidly rising infection rates in the uk, theyve just put in a stipulation where you have to spend two weeks in self isolation but you can have a test after eight days and they might let you out a few days early but if youre positive, things are much worse. Im afraid with italy being one of the very few your in countries we can now go to without having to quarantine on the way back, this will cause yet more lack of confidence among travellers who are thinking, wejust of confidence among travellers who are thinking, we just want to go somewhere, get some sunshine and come back but clearly, if you test positive, that sets a chain of events in motion over which you have little control. There are certain numbers of brits going abroad during the february half term, bringing back virus. Despite the worries with the travel industry at the moment, you would think the authorities here would want people to be cautious about thinking about a foreign trip. Yellow might guess, and they certainly are. People coming back from poland and turkey now have to self isolate for two weeks but the trouble is that the threshold the government is using, which is 20 new cases per 1000, they set it at 20, parliament was over 28 when put on the no go list. The uk following the news this morning about 13 positive tests overnight is now on 76, so the government is effectively saying, right, dont go to poland for example because of the high rates. In the travel industry meanwhile is in utter despair. Ive heard such fury. This week, the government was in the end of the accused of industrial sabotage. Not heard such fury directed at the government of the travel industry wanting to be able to send people particularly over half term and the options are closing down by the day. Desperate times for the travel industry. Thank you. I should say, we did contact the Italian Health ministry and the embassy for those exa m ples we we re ministry and the embassy for those examples we were telling you about earlier but no response as of yet. Hello, this is breakfast with chris mason and rachel burden. Sir David Attenborough told breakfast earlier this week, that his hope for the future of the planet lies in the hands of children and some of our younger viewers were given the chance to ask him their own questions. Now, three more, prince george, Princess Charlotte and prince louis have each been quizzing sir david a big question from a very little royal. We were saying it was nice to hear them speaking. They didnt sound as posh as we thought they would. Not not posh as you but that would be hard. We have 109 millimetre of rain in parts of gloucestershi re we have 109 millimetre of rain in parts of gloucestershire of the last three days alone which is well over one month of the ring, we are looking at a wet 0ctober one month of the ring, we are looking at a wet october and youre only four days in. We have this area of cloud developing into central portions of the uk. Raining at the moment for most of us which is coming down pretty heavily. Looking at the weather picture this morning, most of us seemingly and we have strong gales blowing. The only similarity is they will finish about 50 metres to my left but they are running this 19 times around a tube five kilometre oh that takes in St Jamess Park which is why they are running past me again and again with the women under way. They are over halfway, the men go off at 1015. Thank you, youve done sterling work throughout the morning. We have to give read it to all the other runners. Not there in Central London but all over the country. They are braving the weather. They are braving the weather. 0ur reporter Radzi Chinyanganya is with a group of virtual runners who work for the nhs in lewisham. Radzi, how are they taking part today . How is it going there . How is it going there . Really well. We mentioned the bad weather and rain but when it comes to nhs workers, these guys are all heroes. Lets find out how heroic they are. Your cycling today. I cannot run, particularly in this weather, so i will be making them coffee if they are lucky, making sure they know where theyre going. You will be the taskmaster . You might guess, setting the pace and making sure they keep up. You dont want to shoot up a hill or down health of these behind community that the face nicely. If you are not doing that, what is your normal occupation . I run the lung Disease Service so i seeing post covert patients. This is a special community. Talking about different departments, yours had a real light shone out in recent months. Can you tell is about the challenges mothers and fathers have had trying to give birth during this time . Dell might pick challenges and the biggest one was trying to navigate all our services and find out what was going on, where things are happening but without the usual support you would have. The big thing has been to reduce footfall and contact, so doing that was slightly more difficult because its normally a family thing when you have a baby. What we try to maintain this song, but also try to observe the guidelines are the pandemic. What has the team spirit been like . When you came in, youre a ball of energy. There is a real energy here. For those who have no my whole career, ito dance away and i would wa ke career, ito dance away and i would wake up each morning, what was important with the pandemic was realising this is a big, global thing, its a crisis, there are certain things we have to do but i would hit the reset button every morning and it is important to do that because as with women well look after, what has happened quite a bit as staff are anxious as well so we had to be able to reset that button and for me being able to do that was really important. With that in mind, we are running in the rain, its called, what energy are you going to be bringing . its called, what energy are you going to be bringing . I will be dancing. White might you have a smile on yourface, youre dancing. White might you have a smile on your face, youre someone who loves running. Ive always enjoyed running, got more into it in later life but since i was at school, ive always done a bit. How important is the exercise been for the nhs staff during such a testing time . Like linda was saying, truly important to reset the balance. I was finding that i was going home from work completely drained but we are here with a load of fields. I was doing laps of the field and adjust region re energised me and cleared my head. How has the preparation gone . It has not been the best. I worried about the rain but it will be what it will be. Im looking forward to it. Have you ran before . The last time i ran this distance was in 2014. What would you say to anyone who was speaking you would speak about running it next year . With you guys, normally you would have thousands of people lining the street, giving support. How important is energy . We have quite a buzz going on our Whatsapp Group and quite a buzz going on our Whatsapp Group and i hope that will continue as we go round, there are various people coming to meet us as well. Coming back to you, stories about energy and the importance of running. In terms of your exercise background, what would you say its like . I play hockey. Itry background, what would you say its like . I play hockey. I try to burn 900 calories per day in the hospital, try not to use the lift too much. For me, i dont work for the nhs but exercise is one of my coping mechanisms, is that something youve seen at the moment . Coping mechanisms, is that something youve seen at the moment . Notjust the nhs but the patients as well. The ability to get back to exercise or the lack of ability is a huge pa rt or the lack of ability is a huge part of their psychological recovery. Shes running between Ladybower Reservoir and matlock bath in the Peak District to raise money for mountain rescue. 0llie and sophie are just crossing the start line for their virtual race. Here they are on the banks of the river trent in nottingham. Heathers first marathon probably isnt what she expected but thats not stopping her running around fleet in hampshire this morning for a local Cancer Charity called planets. Take a look at the size of this puddle jamie says this is his first obstacle hes come across. Coming at mile 2. And you might recognise colin, usually takes on marathons wearing his memorable big pink dress. Today hes swapped that for a big green dress, which he will run half on the race in. And for the second half hell change into something a bit more comfortable. Good luck to all. If you see them out and about, cheer them on the way. Thats all. We back tomorrow from 6am.
