Will reduce the amount it contributes to salaries. It will save the public pot billions, but at what cost to employment . A day to remember for Britains Cameron Norrie at the us open. He staged an incredible comeback from two sets down to reach the second round in new york. Good morning. We are off to a dry start with some sunshine. Like yesterday through the day the cloud will build and become a bit more widespread and there is some rain in the forecast. I will tell you where later in the programme. Good morning to you. Its tuesday september i. Our top story the footballer Marcus Rashford has formed a task force to tackle child food poverty in the uk. Hes joining forces with Major Charities and supermarkets to call for more government funding. It comes just three months after his campaign led the government to change its mind over stopping Free School Meals during the Summer Holidays during lockdown. Hes been speaking exclusively to sally. Go on, get it. Oh for the foot marcus rushford, this is a deeply personal project. I am a single parent. It just helped personal project. I am a single parent. Itjust helped him so much with food for himself. Thank you. No problem. I think just with food for himself. Thank you. No problem. I thinkjust to see the smiles on their faces and to see how much it has helped them made me happy to see that actually with my owii happy to see that actually with my own eyes. He is a stigma. You look at it as, welcome who goes to these places, foodbank. They look down on it but we when you are speaking about it and you have been through it, it has given a family confidence. 0k, he has gone through it. It is a situation, we can pass it. It is a situation, we can pass it and ask for help. He asked the summer it and ask for help. He asked the summer thinking about what he wants to do next. We pretty much knew straightaway that we have found a short term solution, but that wasnt going to work in the long run so we had to think about how is the best way to do it so that these families can eat long term and not have any issues. Hello, everybody. Can you hear me . Some of the biggest brands on the country are on this call. Most have now signed up to rashfords task force. They are supporting these proposals from the National Food strategy. Expanding Free School Meals to every child from a household on universal credit oi from a household on universal credit orsimilar from a household on universal credit or similar benefits. Providing holiday food and activities for all children on Free School Meals. Increasing healthy start food vouchers from £3 ten to £4 25 per week. Henry dimbleby is leading the review and spoke at the start of the call. It is important because the alternative to a school lunch is a packed lunch and only i of packed lunches have the nutritional value ofa lunches have the nutritional value of a school meal, and if you look at packed lunches as children get less affluent, those packed lunches have increasingly low nutritional balance. This is a fantastic way to get children eating well at school. We are not specialists in the area. They actually are. Our i am learning so they actually are. Our i am learning so much more, they are giving me figures that have sent me a bit. Like, well. He has written to the Prime Minister thanking him for the u turn over Free School Meals in the summer u turn over Free School Meals in the Summer Holidays back injune. In a very personal letter drawing on his own experiences as a child, he outlines the extra help he feels some families still need now more than ever. His task force calls for it to be funded as soon as possible. Marcus rashford is hoping that by extending the conversation about food poverty with a bigger team of experts around him, he might be able to help even more of todays children. And sally will have more of that exclusive interview with Marcus Rashford at 6 30. And throughout the morning for you as well. We will talk about what he is trying to do and why that is needed as well. Millions of children in england and wales are preparing to go back to school this week. For many, it will be for the first time in six months. But theres a warning that many have fallen behind with their learning. Lets speak to our Political Correspondent chris mason whos in westminster. Lots of children back at school this week, and also, mps back in parliament. I would week, and also, mps back in parliament. Iwould imagine week, and also, mps back in parliament. I would imagine that would be top of the agenda. Absolutely it is the top of the agenda after those false starts before the summer with ministers pretty keen on getting quite a lot of children back and nowhere near as many as they first hoped managed to get through classroom doors. This time they are considerably more confident, pointing to surveys that adjust the vast majority of head teachers expect schools to be fully open and all pupils to be back as the new term starts in england and indeedin the new term starts in england and indeed in wales today and in the coming days. The government says it has put money aside to help children catch up having missed so much schooling in the last few months, and, yes, hope for the measures put in place, not least these bubbles wear glasses or, in some instances, a whole year groups will remain together but wont mix with other pupils, will mean education can shuffle back to something close to that normality, certainly far more normality than there has been since lockdown began. It will be interesting to see just how many pa rents interesting to see just how many parents remain sufficiently nervous that they dont send their children back. In terms of challenges ahead for the government, what elses would be on the agenda for this autumn term if you can it that . Would be on the agenda for this autumn term if you can it that7m is an autumn term just as it is for school pupils. Massive challenges for the government, lots of concern among conservative mps, privately and in some cases publicly about what they see as a lack of confidence, a lack of conviction, more 3 point terms than the most popular driving instructor in the world given all of the about terms, the one we heard from sally on school meals, exam results in the last few weeks. Some tory mps were interested in things like this and come on breakfast offending government policy for fear they would do it and 15 minutes later the policy might change. On top of that, massive challenges related to the coronavirus, the furlough scheme unwinding, ending by the end of next month, employers having to spend more money starting from today. Medically, economically and so politically, a profound term ahead, with massive decisions for the government to make. Thank you for the moment. We will speak to the schools minister at 7 30am about some of that. President trump has defended the teenage gunman whos been charged with killing two people and injuring another during protests in the United States at the weekend. The president said the 17 year old appeared to have been acting in self defence when he opened fire on those protesting the shooting by police of the black man, jacob blake. He was trying to get away from them i guess, it looks like, and he fell, and then they very violently attacked him, and it was something that we are looking at right now and it is under investigation, but i guess he was in very big trouble. He probably would have been killed. But it is under investigation. People with diabetes will be eligible for free meals in a new diet plan being launched by nhs england. Trials showed that half of those who followed the regime saw their type 2 diabetes go into remission after a year. Patients will also get advice from clinicians and be encouraged to increase their exercise levels. A man who set off to swim the English Channel unaccompanied has been rescued after an 8 hour search. A helicopter and lifeboats were launched and the man was eventually found just 500 metres off the coast of dover. The swimmer was said to be cold and tired but otherwise well. A dog has had a lucky escape after chasing seagulls into the sea off rhyl in north wales. The dog had to be rescued by a lifeboat crew after ending up half a mile away from the shore. When they caught up with the dog, it was still chasing the same seagull the dog and its owner have now been reunited. They said when they found the dog, it was quite happy, not in distress. The water was quite cold, only about 12 degrees, that water, but the dog is ok. The dog seem to want to get on board the boat ido the boat i do love the fact it is a classic dog, that seagull, i will get that seagull hours later, still paddling towards the seagull. And thank you to the crude who managed to save the dog. We will talk to them let the crew. We dont know the name of the dog although we will find out the name of the dog. You cant go the whole morning calling it a dog. We can make up a name. We can make up a name. We will take your suggestions for dog names for the seagull chasing dog. From today, the government is cutting the amount it pays workers who are being kept on the furlough scheme by their bosses. He ninas looking into this one for us today. Good morning. Thats right. This is a significant moment for the millions ofjobs, which the government had effectively been keeping alive. You will remember at the beginning of the pandemic the chancellor offered to pay 80 of the wages of jobs that were affected by the crisis. TheJob Retention scheme orfurloughing as it became known was designed to keep the economy alive. Around 9. 6 million jobs have been supported by this, costing the government £35. 4 billion so far. The economy is slowly reopening, and some jobs are restarting, but not all. In fact, around 12 of uk employees are thought to still be on furlough. Alex penn runs a company, which looks after sound at gigs and festivals. As you can imagine, his business isnt generating any income. We provide sound systems for live events ranging from arena shows, festivals, last weekend we would have been doing the wedding in leeds festival. We do mainstage and second stage on both sides, so a very busy weekend for us. This year, obviously none of that is happening. We put around 170 staff onto the furlough scheme, leaving 30 working throughout. When the news came out for the closing of the furlough scheme and how it was going to finish at the end of november, that was when we decided we needed to go through our initial round of redundancies. The that we are already losing talent. Many of our freelancers are already working in otherjobs, and freelancers are already working in other jobs, and we freelancers are already working in otherjobs, and we dont expect all of them to come back. So it is really important that businesses like ours are protected. Tough decisions for alex to make unless he gets more support. From today, the government will only pay 70 of the wages. Then next month, it goes down to 60 and in november, it will be gone altogether. The government says therell be a £1,000 per employee bonus for companies that keep their workers on until the end of january, but have repeatedly said the furlough scheme cant go on forever. What does it mean for workers . Lets speak to frances ogrady, general secretary of the trades union congress. Good morning. How significant is it for employers . It is significant, and what Many Employers are saying is it is to simple to turn off the tap. We need a plan forjobs and working our way out of this crisis is the best way to ensure that workers are spending their money locally, paying taxes, and that we step by step again to reopen the economy and build our way back. As the furlough scheme right scheme . The treasury said we are supporting jobs for eight months, it has cost more than 35 william pounds, that is roughly the budget of nhs and social ca re roughly the budget of nhs and social care for three months. That spending is not sustainable, is it . The unions have been calling on the government to get around the table together with business unless look at targeted support for industry. It is really important for example that we keep our Manufacturing Base strong, the Prime Minister only a couple of months ago promised a partnership guarantee, said that we had to build our way out of this crisis. Until the government gets control of the pandemic, of course we are going to see some companies struggle, but they are companies that do have a viable future, and jobs that we must protect for the future of this economy. Just to be clear, would you like to see industry specific tailor made support packages . Which industries would you choose . All of them would say, we need support. There are different plans i think we need for different plans i think we need for different industries. But what is clear is if we can get people back at least part time, then perhaps we can use some of the down time workers are currently spending on furlough to up skill and retrain, and that is where we would like to see more government support, because thatis see more government support, because that is an investment in the future of the country. We need to up skill, we need to protectjobs, we need to work our way out. The government would say they are investing £2 billion in a plan forjobs, which is what you just called for, the kick programme, training and apprenticeships. Why is that not enough . What we have seen is although the Prime Minister promised every young person would have an apprenticeship, actually, they have start let fall off a cliff. Down by 60 on average but it is hitting young people much harder. So again, lets talk, lets figure out around the table to a National Skills task force how we make sure that all young apprentices have the right their training so dont waste it, and how we use the promised Investment Infrastructure to make sure that we have lots of opportunities for young people. There has been concentrating on universities and schools but very little in the vocational route. That Old Fashioned snobbery little in the vocational route. That Old Fashioned snobbery needs little in the vocational route. That Old Fashioned snobbery needs to go. We need all young people, the other half if you like to also have investment. Everyone would agree with the outcomes you are proposing, every young person did deserve that equal opportunity. But how is it going to be funded . How would you pay for all of this . The truth is, we cannot afford not to. The misery of mass unemployment is not a price worth paying. We saw what happened in the 1980s, we saw the loss of potential. This is a crisis and it needs to sort out test and trace and practical issues like childcare so that people can get back to work and of course a safe transport system but, in the meantime, you have to keep as much of the economy protected and jobs protected as well as much as possible. Underlining that the furlough scheme starts unwinding today and this is the beginning of problems for some. Lets take a look at todays papers. The Daily Telegraph claims education secretary Gavin Williamson is considering plans to delay a level and gcse exams. The papers says the move could see pupils take exams injune orjuly, meaning Summer Holidays would not be affected. The guardian features our exclusive with footballer Marcus Rashford who has written to mps with what the paper calls a rallying cry to tackle food poverty in the uk. The daily mail says the nhs is introducing a low calorie soup and sha ke diet, which, the paper claims, is proven to send type 2 diabetes into remission. It also shows a picture of the singer adele who has sparked a Cultural Appropriation row over her outfit to celebrate what would have been the Notting Hill Carnival weekend. And the bbc news website shows pictures of lady gaga at the Video Music Awards wearing a variety of different masks. The singer even performed in one. She won five awards, including artist of the year. She is styling it out. Very much so. I like the bubble one. How would you feel about a 70 day holiday listen to this, this is a bus trip from london to delhi or vice versa. 70 days, 4000 milesjourney, 50,000 people have shown interest. There is no toilet on the bus but an example of what you would do. You could start in delhi, go through burma, c willis temples, through thailand, laos, china, kazakhstan, into russia, the baltic states, eastern europe, germany, belgium and eventually to britain. £15,000 if you want to do it. And 70 days off work. I love this lady. She won the lottery, £2. 7 work. I love this lady. She won the lottery, £2. 7 million. She wanted 25 yea rs lottery, £2. 7 million. She wanted 25 years ago and she has continued throughout and through lockdown, with herjob at m s. She gets up at midnight every morning. A couple of times during doctor it was really hard, i was driving to work thinking, what am hard, i was driving to work thinking, whatam i hard, i was driving to work thinking, what am i doing. Hard, i was driving to work thinking, whatam i doing. She hard, i was driving to work thinking, what am i doing. She did it to encourage her children that ha rd it to encourage her children that hard work counts. Good on you, elaine. Would you keep working . The silence says it all. There are many ways to keep your brain going. |j could handle it. With lockdown restrictions gradually relaxing, weve been able to enjoy pubs, bars and restaurants again. Nightclubs, however, are still shut. Some believe thats led to a rise in illegal raves. So in an age of social distancing and the need to stay safe, how do you keep everybody happy . Shamaan Freeman Powell has been finding out, and her report contains some flashing images. It has been a familiar scene across the country over the long weekend. Despite find for organisers and those attending, many are prepared to ta ke those attending, many are prepared to take the risk. Roster now owns pubs but he says that the rave culture is more thanjust pubs but he says that the rave culture is more than just dancing. We need to meet people, dance, touch each other, hug and i think the festivals, clubs, they epitomise all of those behaviours. It is a very social environment and when you take that away, it will impact on people S Mental Health especially if they do not have something to replace that. 1824 do not have something to replace that. 18 24 year olds are most affected by the pandemic. With three quarters they got worse during lockdown. Adults say bottom also has an impact on that also. Itjumps to 83 for those under 25. Lottie says she has missed going out over lockdown. To start with, it was really lonely because we could not leave the house at all. But as things are gradually open, im starting to feel a little better. I could start going to places again but i do worry about how many people are going to be there and if it is safe to be around all those people at once. These concerns are also shared by the police. They were out in manchester this weekend. Reminding venues of their responsibilities. These established venues are easy to regulate. It is the private gatherings that are harder to please. We have had incidents in abb properties where they were parties. It was dangerous in terms of health and safety point of view. Air b b. In terms of health and safety point of view. Air 8 3. In response in terms of health and safety point of view. Air 3 3. In response to a surge of illegal gatherings, air b b bad House Properties limiting gas numbers to 16. Before lockdown, thousands of people would have packed out of this room but social distancing makes that impossible. That gap in the market is being filled by private and unlicensed events which do not always prioritise the safety and security of their customers. Many of the youth of today who are socially staffed and did not have the ability to go out and socialise, do not, we will see a massive growth in unlicensed events. And its that have been delivered by industry, events sectors, nig htclu bs have been delivered by industry, events sectors, nightclubs and live music, the government needs to look at trying to balance this by considering the safer option to reopen so that people can still engage in social experience but do it safely. Another raid we believe to place over the weekend, this time in north london. Across the country, the areas that have seen the highest rises in places, people in the 20s of the most affected but some young people continue to risk their physical health to maintain their mental well being. Those in the trade so the government must act now to avoid the rise of the illegal rave. Shamaan Freeman Powell, bbc news the government says its continuing to work closely with the industry and medical experts, so that nightclubs can reopen when its safe to do so. Its been less than two weeks since the government announced that people arriving in the uk from portugal would no longer have to quarantine. It led to a huge spike in people booking flights, with some Airlines Even selling out of seats. But theres now fears the decision could be reversed, following a surge in coronavirus cases. We can cross to the algarve now and Paul Mikhelson who runs a cafe in praia da luz. Good morning and thank you for joining us. Portugal was on that list and then it was removed. What kind of impact that have on your trade . We were delighted by the idea, the news that it would be open and we could welcome tourists again and we could welcome tourists again and all ofa and we could welcome tourists again and all of a sudden it all seems to be reversed. For us, it is bad news because the Tourism Industry make up the lack of income for september and october and we were looking forward to it and counting on it. It would bea to it and counting on it. It would be a disaster for many businesses here if it comes to an end. Havent been a lot of british tourists returning to portugal . We have definitely noticed the difference because all of a sudden the languages on the terrorists changed. It went from spanish and portuguese to english again and we did see a surge, a welcome surge in tourists. Is it already having an impact that portugal might be removed from the lesson people might have to quarantine. Are you seeing an impact already . No, not at all. Ithink quarantine. Are you seeing an impact already . No, not at all. I think the news is very fresh so nobody on the terrorists, on the cafe has been talking about. The balcony. But i think everybody now is thank we will wait and see what happens. There is no point in panicking. How bad have things been where you are with coronavirus . June was a disaster. July coronavirus . June was a disaster. July we were perhaps at 40 coronavirus . June was a disaster. U wewere erasa o o. August was better because we had the portuguese tourists, especially from lisbon but they are going home again because schools are starting stop rethinking we may end up with an empty area. We thought that british tourists could replace them but now we are wondering if that will come to an abrupt. Thank you very much indeed. Thank you very much. You are watching bbc breakfast. Through the day, more cloud developing and it will spread so it will be a cloudier and to the day but still wanted to write up spells. The rain through Northern Ireland clearing with a brighter afternoon. Fizzling out across scotland. For many, a little bit above we were yesterday in terms of temperatures. Clear spells as well. A system waiting in the wing bringing in heavy rains. Showers peppering western areas. What is happening is low pressure still dominating our weather. Two other front coming our way and an array of isobars. That a lwa ys way and an array of isobars. That always tells you when isobars are squeezed, it will be windy. The strongest winds across the north west. 45 Miles Per Hour gusts. Rain pushing from the west to the east. Where you see greens and yellows, you re east. Where you see greens and yellows, youre looking at heavier posts. You probably would not get into the far south eastern quadrant of the country until later. As we move from wednesday into thursday, we lose the first weather front and then we have the second one coming m, then we have the second one coming in, this cold front, sinking south again with steel brisk winds. President trump has defended the teenage gunman whos been charged with killing two people and injuring another during protests in the United States at the weekend. People with diabetes will be eligible for free meals in a new diet plan being launched by nhs england. Trials showed that half of those who followed the regime saw their type 2 diabetes go into remission after a year. Patients will also get advice from clinicians and be encouraged to increase their exercise levels. We will talk about Marcus Rashford. He isa we will talk about Marcus Rashford. He is a man on we will talk about Marcus Rashford. He isa man ona we will talk about Marcus Rashford. He is a man on a mission, isnt he . Just a few months after persuading the government to extend Free School Meals in england during the Summer Holidays, hes set himself another goal. The footballer has been speaking exclusively to sally all about it. You have been having this ongoing conversation. Sally, this is a big moment for Marcus Rashford . Particularly this morning. This is the first time we can talk about what he has been doing. Everybody at home probably remember that moment in the summer when Marcus Rashford campaigned to have that you turn on Free School Meals during the Summer Holidays, and then it went quiet and you would think he had achieved everything he wanted to achieve and that was the end of his project. But, no, that was definitely not the end of the road. We knew there was more to come. He had more ideas to share with us. I have been talking to him exclusively about what he wa nts to to him exclusively about what he wants to happen next. Marcus rashford, what a summary you have had. Summer. Rashford, what a summary you have had. Summer. Marcus rashford on the Family Support that changed government policy on Free School Meals. She rang me about ten times a day no, she isjust very happy and if someone. When she was going through it, if someone had spoken out then, maybe the situation would have been different. When we last spoke, did you already know at that point that this wasnt the end . Yeah, we pretty much knew straightaway that we had found a short term solution, but that wasnt going to work in the long run so we had to think about how is the best way to do it so these families can eat long term and not have any issues. And now you have actually been to meet some of the families who have benefited from the trains that you campaigned for over the summer. It was it like . Benefited. It was good, good experience. Are you trying to hurt me . | experience. Are you trying to hurt me . i think to see the smiles on their faces and to see how much it has held them many happy to see that actually with my own eyes rather thanjust people actually with my own eyes rather than just people texting actually with my own eyes rather thanjust people texting and messaging and stuff like that. One of the parents was getting a little bit emotional sometimes when we were speaking to each other, and. From a single parent. It speaking to each other, and. From a single parent. It just speaking to each other, and. From a single parent. Itjust helped him so much with getting food for himself. Thank you. It is no problem. Yes, they are so similar to my childhood. How long have you been out . Half an hour. Do you play here all the time . Yeah, kind of. I used to call it my safe zone when i was a kid. You dont want to be on the streets all the time. Have you spoken publicly before about stigma . How important is it that you are able to change attitudes about taking help when you need it . |j think it has massive importance because i feel like at times people think they are being looked down on if they ask somebody for help, and i think in this generation that we are m, think in this generation that we are in, that is one thing that should change. He is a stigma because you look at it as, well, who goes to foodbank, who goes to these places . They look down on it, but when you are speaking about it and saying you have been through it, that has given a family confidence, he has been through it, it is a situation, we can pass it and ask for help. Hello, everyone. Can everybody hear me . I just want to thank everyone for joining the call and i really appreciate your help that you are giving. You have got this task force behind you now. How important is it that people like the chief executives of british supermarkets get involved now . Yeah, it is a massive importance because most guys, we are not specialist in the area, they are. So i am learning so much about that, they are giving me facts i have not heard before, figures, some are a bit. Like, well. It is their line of work. It has been a huge plus to have the team. I has been a huge plus to have the team. Lam has been a huge plus to have the team. I am very ambitious as a person myself, so it is important when you speak about the team that we are brought in to help us. Ijust see ambition in all of them and they are all going to work as hard as they can. The journey starts now. Are you excited about that . Are you ready . It is definitely exciting because it will help families pretty much straightaway. I am definitely excited for them and hopefully we can do it for them. We will be watching every step of the way. Thank you. So there we have it. The next step in Marcus Rashford baldwinjourney, just to recap what he wants to do. He wants to expand Free School Meals to more children, provide holiday food and activities for kids who are eligible for Free School Meals and he wants an increase to the value of healthy start vouchers. We are going to be discussing is a much more detail throughout the programme. We talked about the people who had been advising him, the supermarkets, we have a supermarket on later and dimbleby was part of the zoom call you saw. Many of the people on that zoom call are now his task force, the people who will be advising him about what the next steps to take up. Very special for those young lads to play with them. That was brilliant, lovely moment, yes. This is an elaborate plan for you to get back in the studio. Well done. Do you think it work . It has taken me months and an exclusive government normally you are doing the sport from downstairs, cat, you have some work to do to get back in the studio iam afraid. Work to do to get back in the studio i am afraid. How looking down this morning . It is very lonely indeed. One day i will be up there. Maybe i need to land an enormous exclusive like sally did this morning. Good morning, guys. We have some live tennis at the moment because us open is under way behind closed doors in new york. And what a day it was for Britains Cameron Norrie it didnt look good when he went two sets down against the ninth seed, diego schwartzman, but he fought back to take the match to a decider. That wasnt going to plan either he had to save two match points before completing the biggest win of his career, i could have easily snapped at missing that many returns, especially against a guy with not a huge serve, so i think my attitude won it for me today and my legs got me through it. I am obviously happy with how i played and to get the win, but sometimes you have got to win, but sometimes you have got to win ugly i think. Kyle edmund also had a shaky start before beating Alexander Bublik in four sets. But he faces a tough task if hes to reach the third round of a grand slam for the first time in seven attempts. He plays world number one Novak Djokovic next. That will be one to watch. Top seed Karolina Pliskova and naomi osaka are through, but the american teenager coco gauff has been knocked out in round 1 of a grand slam for the first time in her short career. She lost to anastasija sevastova. Great Britains Adam Yates is still four seconds behind leader Julien Alaphilippe after stage 3 of the tour de france, which was won by caleb ewan in a sprint finish. The australian, nicknamed the pocket rocket, surging past irelands sam bennett to take it. Defending champion egan bernal has moved up to sixth place overall. Wasps beat bath in a thrilling win to leapfrog them into the final play off place in rugby unions premiership. They fought back from 13 0 down, dan robson producing a superb dummy that wrong footed baths defence and sent jacob umaga through to score the try of the game. It finished 27 23, and wasps are now two points clear of bath in fourth with five games to go. Really enjoying this story this morning. The draw for the the Europa League qualifying round threw up one stand out tie shamrock rovers will face the italian giants ac milan. The 7 time european champions with their superstars, including the likes of Zlatan Ibrahimovic, will travel to dublin for the single legged tie later this month. There were three teams they could have been drawn against, and they got the toughest. I think the other teams give you a chance to go through, a real chance. I think we would have founded a chance against either of them. It is what it is. It is ac milan, a massive blow. They have one competitions, we know it is a fantastic opportunity for ourselves and one were looking forward to. Fans, of course, will still be absent from the tie, but lets speak now to shamrock rovers season ticketholder sean condron who is in dublin this morning to get the supporters reaction to the draw. I want to say congratulations, but it has got to be a very tough time for your team what was your reaction when you saw that come out of the hat . Yeah, it is a bittersweet feeling to be honest. Without a shadow of a doubt, ac milan are the biggest in the draw. Seven time european champions, absolute superstars littered over the side. Of course you cant help but think you wish you were there and given the current climate we are m, and given the current climate we are in, the prize money on offer to clu bs, in, the prize money on offer to clubs, we are a small club in comparison, and it is a better judgement about a quarter of 1 Million Euros for every round you get through. For a team like ac milan isa get through. For a team like ac milan is a drop in the water, but for us, it is huge money. You cant help but think maybe they would have kept the glamour until next year and given us a winnable game. That is how it has gone and that is how we will go at it. No fans, no bumper payday for the club. Is the club in trouble . Is it struggling through this pandemic, not having fans in the stands . I wouldnt so struggling. I would say we are struggling. I would say we are struggling by any means. At this european money in the leg, the pride money is only 110,000 euros, in europe it is a quarter of a million, there is a massive difference for any club and it is a massive boast. But i wouldnt say we are struggling. It is devastating just from a fan perspective. Any other year this would have been a sold out home leg, it would have been a massive support, and being the iconic venue it is, it is devastating. Nevertheless, how will it feel to see the likes of latin abramovich intentionally playing on your pitch . Look, it is amazing all the same. These superstars dont come around very often, and we will give it a go i guess. I would like to be an optimist. Hope maybe can pull something off. This area season doesnt start until the sunday after, the qualifying games serie a. It means us getting through pulling off a miracle, we can take it i am hoping you can enjoy it as the other fans can. Best of luck facing ac milan in the second round. I have to mention, theirfirst round match, they won 12 11 ontology. That tea m match, they won 12 11 ontology. That team really putting their fans through it at the moment. That is a proper score as more pupils prepare to go back to school, lets get the latest medical advice from one of our gps. Joining us today is drjamie parker. Good morning. We as taking to the School Minister later. What is your ta ke School Minister later. What is your take on the mass return to school we are going to see across england and wales . Scotla nd are going to see across england and wales . Scotland and Northern Ireland already starting. I am very excited for the student going back to school but from a coronavirus point of view, personally, my daughter has serious as much. I am not worried about it from a coronavirus point of view, i think children should be excited and not worried and i am sure schools have been doing a lot of work to ensure children going back be safe as well. Do you think that conflicting advice because im sure there are parents worried about sending children to school and concerned about what might happen . They may have a child with asthma like you, what sort of thing are you talking to your patients about when they address these sort of issues at they address these sort of issues at the moment . The evidence for children shows that, even if they get coronavirus, which they do not as much as adults, certainly did not get it get seriously unwell from it. I think ensuring that things like asthma are well managed, as you would normally, is obviously key. What i am not clear about is whats gonna happen with those coughs and colds. Not clear about what is going to happen, are we going to be called on the time as parents if your child has a cold. I think that is a challenge. As a parent and a father of three children yourself, do you feel the last few months have been ha rd feel the last few months have been hard for kids across the uk and we can broaden this out to the world but in the uk, do you think it is essential mentally for lots of children to get back to school . |j think children to get back to school . think it is key. They have spent too much time around adults, certainly my children, and they have used that social contact with other children. Also the safeguarding elements is key. School and teachers who often see children regularly, can often pick up on children who are being abused. There is significant proportion of abuse at home which has not been picked up because children have not been around other adults. The big issue of Domestic Violence as well. I wonder if that is going to be something, a real highlight in coming weeks and months, do you think . highlight in coming weeks and months, do you think . I think it would be a real struggle schools and teachers who were trying to pick that up because you will have stu d e nts that up because you will have students they have not seen for four months. At picking up different behaviour is it because something is going on at home or because they are nervous about going back to school. What about the fact that we are entering flu jab season. How big a challenge is that going to be from a gps point of view . It is clear that you take that up if you are able to. The influencer is a potentially serious disease as well. Influenza. Because of the logistics and ensuring people are safe to come down to the surgery, it will take at least double the time to get those flu jab is done so big logistical challenge with that. flu jab is done so big logistical challenge with that. I am picturing a car park with flu jab handed out in theircar. Is a car park with flu jab handed out in their car. Is that the scenario you are thinking of . It has been discussed. The lovely thing about the drive through system, but in britain you have the weather and potentially a thousand people coming down to a car park and the queues that could create. Big logistical dilemmas. Maybe a bigger number of smaller flu dilemmas. Maybe a bigger number of smallerflu clinics. Last year we could get 500 people done in the space of a few hours. That is not going to happen this year. space of a few hours. That is not going to happen this year. I am sure thatis going to happen this year. I am sure that is something we will return to enter the coming weeks. Can i also ask you what discussions are you having both as a gp and a father, about face coverings in schools . How do your children feel about that . have Primary School children so they will not be wearing face masks but i think it is key to remember why people are being advised to wear the masks, to stop you spreading it to other people, not you getting it from other people. That is in situations where the two metres cannot be kept. The distance is two metres. The reason you are Wearing Masks is to help stop you spreading coronavirus whether people not you catching it from other people so hand washing is clear before and after you touch your mask. Remember what youre wearing it is key and remember hand washing. Very good advice as ever. I hope your three Primary School children enjoy their return to school. Thank you. Teachers in england are finally preparing to welcome their students back to the classroom many for the First Time Since march. Our education correspondent Elaine Dunkley is at a school in birmingham to see how theyre planning to keep everybody safe. What is the plan . Good morning and welcome to the jewellery water academy. It is pretty quiet. Just teachers back at the moment. A lot of preparation welcome children back back from all year groups. 580 pupils will be walking through these doors. Everyone has to have their temperature checked and lots of things that are different about schools. We have had lots of reassurance from teachers to make sure they are happy with it. Joining me is the head teacher, greg williams. Thank you for having us here. We will be speaking to you about the changes but first of all i have been speaking with parents. The last time they want through the school gates was six months ago. We have been following families throughout lockdown in liverpool. I wa nt to throughout lockdown in liverpool. I want to go back. As they face the challenges of missing best friend. She has been getting a bit upset sometimes. And she has been getting a bit upset sometimes. And classes. Iwant someone who is professional teaching me, by the way. Aleshia, alexis and leighton are about to start secondary school. I am nervous but i am also excited to step in. We went from the biggest in the school to the literalist. Going to secondary school has i was been a big milestone and with staggered starts and bubbles, things will be very different. It will be the teachers that move about, not the children. It is going to be a little bit like Primary School. On the day i go, i will be very nervous. It is a bit strange knowing we might have to wear a face mask to school but it will be safer. How do you feel about catching up on work . will be safer. How do you feel about catching up on work . I am kind of scared about catching up because i have forgotten a lot of things from primary and have forgotten a lot of things from primary and i will need to catch up on ita primary and i will need to catch up on it a lot. 3ut everyone else will be in the same position, wont they . They may have missed time in class but these families have learned a lot about each other. What if you enjoy doing most as a family . We have spent a lot of time together, loads of board games and it has been nice to be able to spend time with them, whereas before i was working all the time and they were at school. We have had a lot of time to like bond and it has been really nice to notjust like get up and get out of the house to school. It has been nice to kind ofjust roll with it. They will be catching up with schoolwork and friends. This new term has felt like a long time coming. It will be good for them to get back to school, get back to normal or the new normal as everyone says. I am nervous, i am excited, i am worrying but i am happy and i am glad that you are able to go back and get back into some kind of routine. For these families, like so many others, the return to school feels like the return to some level of normality. It is going to be a new and unfamiliar route for most students going back to school. Are you looking forward to having the children back . Absolutely. Absolutely thrilled to have them back on thursday. The place is not being the same without them. I think ican speak being the same without them. I think i can speak for all the head teachers in schools, the hustle and bustle has not been the same. How much preparation have you had to do . An incredible amount. Hand sanitisers being built, wash stations, so that we create a safe environment but it is more than that. Creating a timetable which emphasises bubbles, you group and class bubbles, is quite something. We have managed to put that together so students will be contained in bubbles and will be in a single classroom for the majority of the time and even in breaks and lunches, they will be in separate areas and it will be staggered throughout the day. A survey out from 3000 teachers and saying children around three months behind. A lot of catching up to do. There is a huge amount of catching up and it will be a big challenge but, we have set the foundations up, we have a significant on line platform, we call that call connect and students can call that call connect and students ca n a ccess call that call connect and students can access a live lessons all the time. We are putting in extra lessons after school on saturdays and in holidays and there will be many things to do to close that gap. We have a very energetic star. Joining us now are some parents. Energetic stuff. How are you feeling about the children coming back . energetic stuff. How are you feeling about the children coming back . I am feeling ok. I think the school have made more than adequate provisions andi made more than adequate provisions and i think it is time for the kids to come back now. They have been off five or six months and the schools ofa time five or six months and the schools of a time to prepare and i think mr williams has done a greatjob here andi williams has done a greatjob here and i feel williams has done a greatjob here and ifeel confident williams has done a greatjob here and i feel confident my daughter will be safe coming back to school. It is going to be back to school. A lot of students are not back yet. But teachers will need these few days to make sure everything is prepared, ready to welcome back all year groups. It is great to see those teenagers as well. You can get a sense of a new term beginning but loads of insect days as well. Some back already and we will be speaking to the schools minister, nick gibb, about rumours about exams, a levels and Gavin Williamson is also on the fright pages. Lets catch up with the weather. Some fabulous weather watchers pictures. A beautiful start to the day. A bit of cloud around you can see the sun coming through. But it is a chilly start. Hovering around freezing for some of us. Temperature holding up where we have more cloud. After a bright and sunny start for many parts of the uk, the cloud will build and spread out. Some bright spells around but also a weather front coming in from the west ringing some patchy rain across Northern Ireland and scotland, weakening as it bumps into that High Pressure and it will also be quite breezy in the north west. First thing, cloud across the west midlands, the west country, the south western quarter of scotland. More cloud developing through the course of the afternoon and spreading out. Anotherfront making progress is what is but weakening. Eastwards. The rest of england and wales, quite a bit of cloud around but nonetheless will have bright spells here and there. 14 18 isa bright spells here and there. 14 18 is a kind of temperature you can expect today. Overnight, some cloud around, also some clear skies system come again from the west and that will, by the end of the night, introduce more rain and the wind will also strengthen. It would be a milder night than the one just gone. Tomorrow, rain coming in from the west, moving east steadily. Some heavy bursts possible. Dusty went especially in the exposure in the west. Pretty breezy inland as well. The rate does not get into the far north east of scotland or the fat south eastern quadrant of england until later in the day. During the course of thursday, we say goodbye to that front and another one sinking south, a cold front and as it thinks, it will be taking cloud and patchy rain with it. Behind it, clear skies, sunshine and showers. Temperature was, putting 22 so getting a bit warmer but brisk winds around on thursday. 14 22. Some sunshine and showers for many of us. Headlines are next. Good morning. Welcome to breakfast with dan walker and Louise Minchin. Our headlines today footballer Marcus Rashfords new goal the Manchester United striker tells breakfast why hes heading up a task force to make sure children dont go hungry. I feel like at times people think that they are being looked down on if they ask somebody for help, and i think in this generation that we are in, that is one thing that should change. As many schools prepare to reopen this week, theres a warning that some children are now months behind in their learning. The diet that can defeat type 2 diabetes the nhs is to hand out shakes and soups. Good morning. What a fightback from Cameron Norrie at the us open. He was two sets down, but came through to beat the ninth seed in new york. Good morning to you. Its tuesday september 1. The footballer Marcus Rashford has formed a task force to tackle child food poverty in the uk. Hesjoining forces with Major Charities and supermarkets to call for more government funding. It comes just three months after his campaign led the government to change its mind over stopping Free School Meals during the Summer Holidays during lockdown. Hes been speaking exclusively to sally. Go on, get it. 0h for the footballer marcus rushford, this is a deeply personal project. I am a single parent. Itjust helped him so much with getting food for himself. Thank you. Its no problem. I thinkjust to see the smiles on their faces and to see how much it has helped them made me happy to see that actually with my own eyes. Its a stigma. You look at it as, well, who goes to these places, foodbank . They look down on it, but with you speaking about it and you have been through it, it has given a family confidence. 0k, he has gone through it. It is only a situation, we can pass it and ask for help. Marcus spent the summer thinking about what he wants to do next. We pretty much knew straightaway that we had found a short term solution, but that wasnt going to work in the long run so we had to think about how is the best way to do it so that these families can eat long term and not have any issues. Hello, everyone. Can everybody hear me . Some of the biggest brands on the country are on this call. Most have now signed up to rashfords task force. They are supporting these proposals from the National Food strategy. Expanding Free School Meals to every child from a household on universal credit or similar benefits. Providing holiday food and activities for all children on Free School Meals. Increasing healthy start food vouchers from £3. 10 to £4. 25 per week. Henry dimbleby is leading the review and spoke at the start of the call. It is important because the alternative to a school lunch is packed lunch, and only 1 of packed lunches have the nutritional value of a school meal, and if you look at packed lunches as children get less affluent, those packed lunches have increasingly low nutritional balance. So this is a fantastic way to get children eating well at school. Were not specialists in the area. They actually are. So i am learning so much more, they are giving me figures that have sent me a bit. Like, wow now, the footballer has written to the Prime Minister, thanking him for the u turn over Free School Meals in the Summer Holidays back in june. Millions of children in england and wales are preparing to go back to school this week. For many, that will be for the first time in six months. There is a warning that many have fallen behind with their learning. Lets speak to our Political Correspondent chris mason whos in westminster. It is not just it is notjust children returning for the first time. Mps will be back, and presumably, what is going on for the top of the agenda . M back, and presumably, what is going on for the top of the agenda . It is a really big moment. The government trying to get far more people back in classrooms that actually happened stop this time, there are they are considerably more confident. There are teachers on board, the vast majority of schools will reopen in full with all pupils being welcomed back, and it seems like confidence amongst parents is relatively high as well. As things stand, the government confident that schools can get back ok, and things will be relatively normal or at least a lot more normal than they have been for the last six months, evenif have been for the last six months, even if children have been getting used to these bubbles in england classrooms where classes all year groups are all hemmed in together and can interact pretty much as normal, but dont do any interaction with other year groups in the hope of keeping the virus transmission levels as low as possible. I think throughout the autumn whatever happens as far as the virus is concerned the absolute priority for the government in england will be keeping schools open. It is of course not the only challenge the government will face. It isnt. The new term for mps as well today, lot of grumbles, privately and publicly for conservative mps to feel the government has kept changing its mind on all sorts of different topics, not least the issue of school meals, what they were talking about a couple of meals minutes ago. There is evidence suggesting people are relatively relaxed about u turns amongst ordinary voters because if governments are listening, people think that is a good thing. But mps dont like it because i get invited visiting things like this and defend a policy in15 things like this and defend a policy in 15 minutes later it all changes. Massive challenges to come in the autumn, the furlough scheme changing and disappearing at the end of next month, and one final thought, a brexit deal to try and negotiate as well. The government trying to get a deal with the eu before christmas. Economically, socially, medically, the challenge politically absolutely profound. I know you will be watching closely for us. Thank you very much. We will be speaking to nick gibbs, schools minister about some of those things at 7 30am. President trump has defended the teenage gunman whos been charged with killing two people and injuring another during protests in the United States at the weekend. The president said the 17 year old appeared to have been acting in self defence when he opened fire on those protesting about the shooting by police of the black man, jacob blake. He was trying to get away from them i guess, it looks like, and he fell, and then they very violently attacked him, and it was something that were looking at right now and its under investigation, but i guess he was in very big trouble. He would have been. He probably would have been killed. But its under investigation. The head of British Airways Parent Company has warned of chaos and hardship for travellers if portugal is put back on the uks quarantine list. A new airbridge was created only ten days ago, prompting a surge in bookings for flights and holidays. Portugal recorded over 20 cases per 100,000 people in the past week, the level where restrictions were previously reintroduced on travel from other countries. A man who set off to swim the English Channel unaccompanied has been rescued after an 8 hour search. A helicopter and lifeboats were launched and the man was eventually found just 500 metres off the coast of dover. The swimmer was said to be cold and tired, but otherwise well. So, it is 7 09. Just a few months after he convinced the government to change its mind over stopping Free School Meals during the Summer Holidays, Marcus Rashford has a new goal. The footballer has brought together some of the uks biggest businesses, supermarkets and charities all in an aim to try and tackle child food poverty. One person who knows how desperate the situation can be is teacher zane powles. During lockdown, he walked more than 550 miles, delivering thousands of packed lunches to vulnerable students. Hejoins us now. Morning to you. We have spoken to you over the last few months. Let us go back to that decision, why you thought it was really necessary that you should be handing out food to some of your students. Yes, it was really important. My concern was how they will get this meal at home and how i will check on the children as well because some of them are in different circumstances. How were they doing . The first week the kids we re they doing . The first week the kids were really happy about not going to school, but as the weeks progressed, their Mental Health got worse, they we re their Mental Health got worse, they were missing school and their friends and alongside that, they we re friends and alongside that, they were stuck in the house all the time with their parents, me talking to the parents, ringing them food, the kids loved it. It helped keep eve ryo ne kids loved it. It helped keep everyone sane. It is notjust Mental Health. Presumably some of these families really needed the extra help and the food on the table. Yeah, without a doubt. The kids were waiting at the windows, so it shows how much they really wanted it. They havent got much money so they werent prepared for this pandemic, they were prepared financially. I was talking to one parent and she normally saves money quite a few weeks before the holiday so she can feed her children during the holidays. When this turned up, it was literally a lifesaver. We know you are part of Marcus Rashford polymer campaign actually, took part ina polymer campaign actually, took part in a magazine call, didnt you . Marcus rashford ausmat campaign. You took part Marcus Rashfords campaign. You took part in a zoom call. How important is it that this is taken on as a campaign . It is massive. He has come from that background himself. It is massive. These children need support and a lot of the parents in difficult circumstances not because of their own fault, but a few made a bad choice in life may be prioritised incorrectly and not as well as i should, never the kids fault. We should, never the kids fault. We should do whatever we can to make sure they are better people, feeding them. We should definitely feed them. We should definitely feed the children when they are struggling. One of Marcus Rashfords things he wants to do is an expansion of Free School Meals. It isa expansion of Free School Meals. It is a pressure he is trying to put on the government. How much difference toa the government. How much difference to a childs learning doesnt make that they not turning up hungry . M is massive. How can we expect children to learn and get their brain in gear if they have not been fed . Some of the families, i can thing a couple, might not have even had tea they before. They come to school hungry, they missed breakfast club, the parents are not as organised as they should be and we expect them to learn that they havent had food. It is impossible. Of course we need to support them and feed them, give them Free School Meals and hopefully after school meals and hopefully after school meals as well if that is possible. It is really good to chat to you as ever, and are you missing all that walking . Yeah, i havejust been on a bike ride so that kept me busy, cycling around the castles and that kept me busy for 16 days. Nothing stops you, does it . thank you very much indeed, as ever. In regards to what Marcus Rashford is trying to do, the government says it is taking substantial action to make sure no child goes hungry through the pandemic and will carefully consider the task forces recommendations. Julie says, i am a single mum to three boys now aged 28, 22 and 13, i have struggled all my working life, i worked out for 30 years, my kids got everything they need but i spent many nights crying. People do not look down on use. Down on you. She says marcus made a big difference to every child in need. He says, well done. She says well done. Passengers on a tui flight that landed into wales from zante last week say that cabin crew failed to challenge those on board that werent wearing face coverings. 16 passengers have now tested positive for coronavirus and all 193 people on board have been told to self isolate. Yesterday we spoke to passenger stephanie whitfield. As soon as we boarded, we realise that many of the passengers hadnt really been educated about the wearing of face masks. Many of them we re wearing of face masks. Many of them were wearing them around their chins and underneath the noses. They were taking them off to talk to fellow passengers and walking down the aisles with their mask off to speak to others. I was sat next to a gentleman who had the mask around his chin for the duration of the flight his chin for the duration of the flight and the cabin crew didnt raise it with him. Lets speak to simon calder, travel editor of the independent, who is outside tuis headquarters at luton airport, and were also joined by Helen Connolly who use to work as cabin crew for monarch airlines. Good morning to both of you. On the issue we just heard, the passengers we spoke to yesterday. I should say that a tui spokesman said the health and safety of passengers is a priority and they were concerned about the claims. What are the guidelines on tui flights . Under the air navigation order 2016, what the captain says goes and if he or she or the company says you have to face marks at all times except when eating and drinking, that is what you do. The cabin crew will tell you that and if you fail to obey their lawful instructions, there are all sorts of remedies. You could be met on arrival by the police, they could even be a diversion. While they are conducting an investigation here in luton that trying to find out why nobody complained at the time. It seems only to have come out from your interview yesterday morning that they were clearly Serious Problems on that flight a week ago today. Doctor, you are a former cabin crew. Why my not have been asking people to keep their face coverings on israel one of the difficulties . Coverings on . What are the difficulties . It was a minority of people that did not wear a mask, the majority did, as usual. It is difficult for cabin crew. When you are 47,000 feet up and youre trying to keep everyone calm, the only thing you can do is to politely someone to put that mask back on. Beyond that, you cannot start or have some sort of confrontation because passenger safety is paramount. It is difficult. I did feel for the cabin crew. Apparently it was an evening flight, from a party island, so that could have been all sorts of things going on. If been all sorts of things going on. If there could have been. It is difficult when you are flying and trying to keep everybody appease. You talk about safety and one of the issuesis you talk about safety and one of the issues is that face coverings is a safety issue. You are right, it is and asa safety issue. You are right, it is and as a gentleman said before, the captain makes the announcement about masks. Apparently the cabin crew made the announcement four times. I do not know what else they could do. Some of the stories coming out, chatting away to passages without any masks, doesnt sound too good but it is a difficult one. I was on a coach trip on the weekend, three hours, i think this flight was 3. 5 hours, i think this flight was 3. 5 hours, and it is a long time to wear a mask and some peoples masks slip down around their noses. There are all sorts of different stories coming up but what do you do as a cabin crew . You control the cabin constantly. I dont know. It is a difficult one and everyone is going through difficult times and rules are changing every week so we just have to go along with it but i do feel sorry for the cabin crew. Have to go along with it but i do feel sorry for the cabin crewm have to go along with it but i do feel sorry for the cabin crew. It is a week since this happened and we spoke to the person on the flight and she said they took the decision to self isolate themselves but they are still trying to trace everybody on board. Should they still be concerned about that . on board. Should they still be concerned about that . I am very, very concerned and for 24 hours i have been trying to find out from Public Health wales exactly when they realised there was a serious issue with this flight and i have not yet got an answer to that. A spokesperson from Public Health wales said some people will not be contacted until today, a week after the flight and they have been Walking Around with other people for all that time. Whatever your coming back from, you have to fill out a form saying which flight you were on and therefore, theoretically, been and therefore, theoretically, been an easy matter once the problem was identified, to get hold of that information and immediately start calling and e mailing people so i am trying to find out why that did not happen. Meanwhile, people supporting the idea of testing on arrival. If you tested the passengers when you came in, you would immediately identify there was a problem you could start dealing with it. Portugal might possibly be next on the list of countries that may have to quarantine. What do you know . The uk ambassador to lisbon has been treating and the streets, you can imagine, have been signed off by foreign secretary Dominic Raabe and they say travellers should consider travelling because of the fast moving situation and only travel if you are content to quarantine if required. Strong concerns that, in the next round of putting countries on the no go list portugal maybe on the quarantine list but no confirmation yet. Type 2 diabetes costs the nhs billions of pounds every year and could put you at greater risk from covid 19. To help combat the disease, the Health Service is rolling out a new soup and shake diet, after trials showed almost half of cases go into remission within a year. Joining us now is professor jonathan valabhji, nhs englands clinical director for diabetes, and john burnett, whose type 2 diabetes went into remission after he lost weight and changed his diet. Good morning to both of you. We should say that you did not go on this date but you didnt change your diet. How did it work for you . started dating five years ago. It was a shock when i was diagnosed. When the doctor tells you have diabetes, it is a shock. The first thing was get a bit of education, find out what it is all about through the Health Service and the scheme they have for newly diagnosed patients and straightaway checking my diet, making sure i was eating healthily, looking at my weight. I started running and exercising and did what i could to bring the sugar levels down in my blood and within six months it had produced an awful lot and i was a medication for about of year and now i have not taken any ta blets for of year and now i have not taken any tablets for four years. How many people will get access to this. It is shakes and what would they be given . This is an exciting week for us to lodge this programme. Around 5000 people in the first couple of years will have the opportunity to access this programme. It is based on good evidence from well conducted clinical trials. It has turned some assumptions about type ii diabetes on its head. We have always looked at it asa on its head. We have always looked at it as a progressive problem that gets worse as the years and decades gets worse as the years and decades get by but these trials show that, if you have people on the low calorie diet, just over 800 calories a day, using total diet replacement so soups and shakes, as you have outlined in your introduction, almost i can put the type ii diabetes into remission. It is life changing for many if you speak to people. The average weight loss is over1. 5 people. The average weight loss is over 1. 5 stones and people feel great. They come off their medication so this is a real opportunity for the nhs. Presumably if it works, we know that diabetes type ii has an impact on the nhs financially . It does indeed and it is said that at least £10 billion a year or at least 10 of the entire budget is spent caring for people with diabetes but also type ii diabetes is a massive impact on individuals and their lives. One of the most common causes of blindness, kidney failure, amputation, increases the risk of heart attacks and strokes. I think the gains for individuals are huge but the gains for the nhs and the taxpayer are real as well. One trial showed that the cost of this intervention realises cost savings for the nhs. After six years, it pays for itself and then some. Quite a change. To come back to your personal experience, what would you say to somebody who is watching who is thinking about this and has some issues from that type ii diabetes, ina similar issues from that type ii diabetes, in a similar position to wear you we re in a similar position to wear you were a few years ago. What would your advice is . It is about taking control of your life. The scheme is fantastic. Gets people thinking about their lifestyle, the food they are eating, thinking about getting fit. Get up and do it. It is empowering to take control back of your life. I have a little granddaughter to chase around and it is fantastic to have the extra energy. Grasp it with both hands. You said 5000 people get axis. How do they get it . Through referral through their gp. When you start this intervention, it is possible to come off medication quite quickly which needs a degree of medical supervision so it has to be through yourgp supervision so it has to be through your gp that you get referred in. This is a really timely programme i think. I was on the programme a few months ago outlining the people with diabetes are also at a high risk with coronavirus so obviously, if we can support people to reduce those risks it is an added that if it over and above what we know are real risks to peoples quality of life with regards to type 2 diabetes and complications in the long term. We have an additional reason really to support people. We know that people of high weight are at risk with coronavirus, and people with high sugar and diabetes, and this programme can put type ii diabetes into remission and reduce weight. It takes some of the risk factors of what is the stash has occupied our thinking in the last few months. Thank you both for your time. You are watching bbc breakfast, still to come alan davies will be here to tell us about how he used humour to help him overcome grief and trauma. Well be discussing that shortly and bringing you the latest news. Most importantly it is time for a bit of carol in our life. You have had amazing pictures this morning. Yes they have been beautiful. Look at this gorgeous picture of cornwall. There is some missed around. Most of it will lift quite readily and today, after a sunny start, rather like yesterday, we will see the cloud bubble up through the day and spread out but, nonetheless, there will still be some sunshine coming through rather like yesterday but we also have a weather front end of the west and that would produce some rain. Already it is crossing parts of western scotland and also Northern Ireland. As it bumps into the area of High Pressure it will tend to wea ken of High Pressure it will tend to weaken and the rain will fizzle out eventually. This morning some areas of cloud around a lot of clear sky stop a chilly start. Temperatures picking up. Milder than yesterday. Patchy rain across scotland, clearing Northern Ireland sofa you it will brighten up nicely with some sunshine in the afternoon. Temperatures ranging from 14 into the north to 20 in the south. This evening and overnight, areas of cloud around. Some clear skies as well. A few showers knocking around in the west. By the end of the night, the arrival of our next atla ntic night, the arrival of our next atlantic system coming our way. It is not going to be a cold night in fa ct is not going to be a cold night in fact much milder than the one just god. Low pressure dominating our weather tomorrow. The one just gone. If you notice the isobars, they are squeezed which means it will be windier, particularly with exposure in the west with gusts of 4045 exposure in the west with gusts of 40 45 Miles Per Hour. The greens and gal is telling you we can expect heavier bursts but it will not get into the south eastern quadrant of the uk and the far north. The greens and yellows. Another weather front coming in. Still brisk winds. We say goodbye to this front and hello to this one. Behind it, sunshine and showers. Sustained wind and gusts more than that, particularly with exposure across the north west. Temperatures 15 in the north west. Temperatures 15 in the north west. Temperatures 15 in the north to 22 in the south east. That will not last because by the time we get to friday, our weather front will come back up and bring more rain across southern areas. To the north of that, sunshine and showers. Breeze in the north west and slipping down to 19 degrees. Good morning. This is breakfast with Louise Minchin and dan walker. It is a big week for pupils in england and wales as they prepare to return to the classroom. For many, its the First Time Since march. So what preparations are in place to welcome students back safely. We have been live to a school in birmingham this morning. Were joined now from westminster by the schools minister, nick gibb. Good morning. Good to have you on the programme. We know many schools in england and wales are going back, and scotland has been there for a few weeks, Northern Ireland, we were alive as they were preparing to go back. I am sore you have seen those surveys talking about the parents, 17 we think who are considering not sending their children back to school because of their concerns over coronavirus. What is your message particularly to those pa rents message particularly to those parents this morning . Schools are very safe, schools have been, over the summer, putting in preparations to make sure schools are clean, hand sanitisers, children are kept in bubbles so they are not mixing unnecessarily with other pupils. One way systems in school corridors, staggered later time and lunchtimes. Schools have gone to enormous effo rts schools have gone to enormous efforts to make sure the schools are safe for young people. The chief medical officer s have said the risk of contracting the virus in schools is very low and the risk of not attending school, the damage to children polymer Mental Health and long term damage to their education are children polymer Mental Health and long term damage to the education far outweighs. Parents and children back to school, help them to catch up on lost education that they will inevitably have suffered during the down. And schools are doing everything they can to make sure their pupils and the and schools are safe. Do you accept a better response ability for that concern . Of the parent of three children and myself children very keen to go back to school, there are pa rents keen to go back to school, there are parents preparing for this return, there has been concerned about the situation of exams on the way that has handled, face coverings and how that was handled, the guidance to teachers who came out quite late on friday although i wonder whether you accept that if you have done things may be slightly differently, there wouldnt be as many parents concerned about sending their children back. The guidance relating to the opening of school this week came out on july to the opening of school this week came out onjuly the second two months ago, that is the guidance that has been used in schools to prepare schools in a safe way for the return of children. We have addressed the issue of exam problems, we encounter that last thursday. But it all plays into the issue of trust and trusting you to make the right decisions for their children. These decisions are not easy during the pandemic crisis stop we ta ke easy during the pandemic crisis stop we take decisions based on scientific advice that if the World Health Organization for example in face coverings, if the advice changes, then of course we change the advice we are giving to schools, saying to schools that they have the discretion to require pupils and staff aware face masks in corridors and communal part of the school if they are unable to maintain social distancing. In areas of local lockdown, then we will require pupils and we are saying that you actually have face masks in those communal areas. We were speaking to agp communal areas. We were speaking to a gp this morning, and his particular area of concern with what happens if his children or a child in general get a cough or a cold . What is the procedure than in terms of how the school deals with that and how you want the parents to deal with that . A child is showing the symptoms of coronavirus, then they would be asked to return home, to go home and then the family asked to have a test. If that test proves positive, then the school will take advice from the local Health Protection teams, that will tracing all the children and adults that that child will have come across, and those people that will be asked to self isolate. Then if it is. The advice from the team, a mobile testing unit may go to school as well to test. That could potentially. I know you talk about being a simple process, but as we approach winter and flu season, loads of kids have those costs and sniffles and things, that could potentially be a huge thing to take ca re of potentially be a huge thing to take care of coughs. Potentially be a huge thing to take care of coughs. Yes, i accept that, but we are taking this issue extremely seriously. That is why the others protocols in place and what happens if a child or an adult does show symptoms of the coronavirus. We have a very effective test and tracing system now which means we have granular information at a very localised level about where we see any rise in the rates of infection of coronavirus, and when we see those rises, as you have seen, we ta ke those rises, as you have seen, we take action very swiftly in those local areas to impose new restrictions, but that doesnt mean that outside those areas parents can be very confident about sending their children to school, and indeed, even in those local areas of local restrictions, the schools are open and it is safe to send children back to school because of the measures that schools are taking with hygiene and cleanliness to keep those schools covid secure. with hygiene and cleanliness to keep those schools covid secure. I want to ask you about a survey, we know there has been a huge impact on School Closures on children learning right across the uk. A new survey says some children, for three months behind in their learning, and it could be worse affected children from poorer backgrounds. How do you as schools minister, as a government address that gap and sort that out . That has been a concern we have had for a long time and that is why we announced several weeks ago £1 billion catch up fund to enable schools to use that funding to ensure that every pupil is able to catch up, and within that, £350 million specifically for 1 to 1 and small Group Tuition for children from the most disadvantaged backgrounds, and if you recall back in midjune, backgrounds, and if you recall back in mid june, we actually also invited back part time those year ten and 12 pupils who have got exams coming up next year to make sure that they were able to keep on top of their studies, ready for exams next year. I am glad you mention exams because i wanted to talk to you about that. I noticed the government said yesterday it was too soon to discuss potentially putting back a levels and gcse exams next year. Reports say the education secretary Gavin Williamson is considering that where are we on that issue of exams next year being put back a little bit later injune and potentially intojuly . Put back a little bit later injune and potentially into july . In mid june, the secretary of state wrote to the regulator about this very issue about looking into whether we should or can delay the exams by a period in the summer. Give young people more time to be taught, more teaching time. The regulator also consulted on changes to the assessment process next year. Again to free up teaching time, to enable those young people to catch up. As i said, we brought back years ten and 12 part time from mid june until the summer break to enable them to have some extra tuition to ensure that they were able to keep on top of their studies and then we want to be in short they are catching up on those studies in this current Academic Year starting today. Ok, but when i was lucky to get a decision on that . I am sure you know this is potentially a huge impact on so many areas of the education industry. Yes, and we will make a decision is we can. You have to also ta ke decision is we can. You have to also take into account the other nations in the uk that use the gcse available, but we will be making a decision with the regulator and the exa m decision with the regulator and the exam boards very soon. Can i ask you, with the plan b, because we are speaking to the shadow education secretary kate green yesterday, she was saying her concern might be the issue of changing the result date as well. If you were to push exams that, would you try and keep the result date the same so there is not as much of an impact on University Document the next stage of the present going to university particularly for a level students for example . These are the logistical issues being departments are looking at because putting back the result has its own limitations in terms of university admissions. So these are all mattering, and then you have ever. To make sure the marking can be take place properly, ta ke marking can be take place properly, take into account the end dates of other nations that usejesus lets gcse, we have been looking at this issue since mid june and we will come to a decision shortly so that schools know what the position will be. We have also changed the assessment process as well to make sure we can free up as much teaching time as possible so those young people can catch up. That is why it is so important that young people now return to school over the course of this week, as term dates start to enable them to resume their education, it is important for the long term prospects that they are backin long term prospects that they are back in school, schools are open, ready for those young people, putting in place all the measures i have been talking about to keep people safe, but it is important for both educational prospects and the Mental Health of young people that they are back in school over the course of this week. We have been speaking this morning to Marcus Rashford, i know you are aware of the campaign he has had. He is now stepping that up to combat child food poverty. How will you be responding to that campaign . M food poverty. How will you be responding to that campaign . It is good that footballers like Marcus Rashford and Jordan Henderson and players together campaign taking social action, proactively taking measures to help, and we share the objective of Marcus Rashford to alleviate the kind of poverty that he talks about in his latest letter, we share those objectives. We have all the schemes protecting jobs, the furlough scheme, £35 billion spend to help keep people s income is not muchjust to help keep people s income is not much just specifically on what he was saying, for example, the task force he has helped to set up, they called for an expansion of holiday food and activities in support all children, reaching an additional 1. 1 million children. As a specifically. Some of the other measures, is that something you will look at . Are you intending to meet with Marcus Rashford on this issue . I would be delighted to meet him, and were looking at all the suggestions he has put forward in his letter to make they do deliver on our shared objective which is alleviating the property he talks about. The other interesting thing in his letter, and the very compelling thing about his own personal experience of growing up and how it was becoming a successful footballer who helped him and his family escape from that situation, and what i would say is that for most people, the only way out of poverty is through the education system, which is why we are so committed as a government to making sure that all young people have the standard of education in their local school that children from more advantaged families take for granted, better reading and maths, more young people from disadvantaged backgrounds to take both subjects, english, maths, foreign languages, that families from wealthier parts of the country again take for granted, our objective is to make sure every young person in this country, regardless of where they live, regardless of their background, has that high quality of education, and that is the way out of the planner poverty that Marcus Rashford in his letter is absolutely right to draw the nation public attention to. We look forward to following that up if and when you do meet with Marcus Rashford nations attention. A new term for lots of students going back to school in england and wales, the term has started elsewhere as well. A new term for mps as well. I want to draw your attention to some of the things mps have been saying from your own party. The deputy chair of the 1922 committee has talked about it being increasingly difficult for tory mps to defend the government in a climate of uncertainty. There comes a point in time where policymakers have to get a grip on policy, decide what it is, be firm with it, be certain, give reassurance and say, this is how we are going to act. How do you respond to those mps within your own party at the moment who feel that this government is being driven by events and what other people are saying rather by controlling those events and giving a clear guidance and a clear policy on some of those most important issues at the moment . We are dealing with a huge crisis at a global pandemic, coronavirus, and the measures the government is taking, things like the Job Retention scheme rejecting millions of people jobs. The bounceback loan scheme, £35 billion to help protect businesses up and down the country. These are unprecedented measures to deal with the economic consequences of this crisis. On the medical issues, of course policies will change when the medical science and the scientific advice changes. If the scientific advice changes. If the World Health Organisation comes up the World Health Organisation comes up with a new view based on the evidence of course we have to change the advice that we give to schools and to other parts of society. Very quickly, but to go back to that World Health Organization advice, that came out friday last week we spoke to you monday and i put that world Health Advice to you and use of the policy about face coverings in school wouldnt change and that change the net day. Yes, of course, thatis change the net day. Yes, of course, that is because we have two take that is because we have two take that advice, we had to take the advice of our own scientific advisors, our own chief medical officer about how that advice tra nslates officer about how that advice translates into the circumstances of this country, given the rates of infection in this country, and once we had that advice, then of course within changed policy and we have changed the advice to give the schools and now the advice is clear that schools do have a discretion to require pupils and staff to wear face masks in the communal areas of a school, if they are unable to maintain social distancing in those parts of the school, and for areas in local restrictions, then they should actually ask pupils and teachers to wear face masks in those communal areas. The advice is now very clear. It is of course based on the scientific advice that we receive as ministers from the chief medical officer, from public of england. Appreciate your time. Thank you very much. What a day it was for Britains Cameron Norrie, as the us open got under way in new york. He said it was his attitude that got him through, against the ninth seed, diego schwartzman. It didnt look good for norrie when he went two sets down, but he fought back to take the match to a decider. That wasnt going to plan either he had to save two match points but he eventually completed the biggest win of his career, i could have easily snapped at missing that many returns, especially against a guy with not a huge serve, so i think my attitude won it for me today and my legs got me through it. I am obviously happy with how i played and to get the win, but sometimes you have got to win ugly i think. Kyle edmund also had to come from behind to beat Alexander Bublik in four sets, but its going to be much tougher in the next round. He plays the world number one Novak Djokovic. Womens top seed Karolina Pliskova and naomi osaka are through, but the american teenager coco gauff has been knocked out in round 1 of a grand slam for the first time in her short career. She lost to anastasija sevastova. The push for places in rugby unions premiership play offs took another turn last night with wasps coming out on top in a thrilling match against bath and moving above them into the all important top four. Wasps were 13 0 down before dan robson produced a superb dummy to send jacob umaga through to score the try that turned the game. They won 27 23, and theyre now two points clear of bath, with five games to go. That is all the sport for now. Thank you, see you later on. From today, the government is cutting the amount it pays workers who are being kept on the furlough scheme by their bosses. Ninas looking into this one for us today. Nina . Good morning. Thats right. This is a significant moment for the millions ofjobs which the government had effectively been keeping alive. You will remember at the beginning of the pandemic the chancellor offered to pay 80 of the wages ofjobs were affected by the crisis. TheJob Retention scheme orfurloughing as it became known was designed to keep the economy alive. Some 9. 6 millionjobs have been supported by this costing the government 35. 4 billion pounds so far. The economy is slowly reopening, and some jobs are restarting, but not all. In fact around 12 percent of uk employees are thought to still be on furlough. But from today, the government will only pay 70 of the wages then next month it goes down to 60 and in november it will be gone altogether. The government says therell be a £1000 per employee bonus for companies that keep their workers on until the end ofjanuary. But have repeatedly said the furlough scheme cant go on forever. Lets speak tojosh hardie, Deputy Director general of the confederation of british industry. Good morning. In the past you have described the chancellor is deft in the way he has reacted to the crisis. This week is a big week. We have schools going back and it helps people going back to work but we also have the tapering of the furlough scheme. It has supported millions ofjobs on ice. But if you think about hospitality, leisure, Creative Industries where sometimes up Creative Industries where sometimes up to 50 of employees are still on furlough. He needs to show the same deafness going forward, the chancellor. Think about whether it is about extending furlough or other grants, National Insurance, business rates. We will be dealing with a huge level of unemployment in the future. What exactly would you like to see . What would a perfect scheme look like . There are ways of reducing the cost businesses are facing and for many it would be critical. 80 reduction, National Insurance, grants or even loans can be extended. But lets keep everything on the table. I understand and so do businesses that furlough cannot last forever but there are alterations to the schemes to make sure businesses are supported and in training going forward. You back the governments told to bring people back into the office. Towns are looking like ghost towns as a result of people not working in offices. Is that the right thing to do . Is it too late to put the genie back in the bottle . We have learnt a huge amount from working from home. Things will change a little this week with children going back to school. I have three and i am quite looking forward to it. This is not about putting the genie back in the bottle. There are many, many people who really want to go back to work. Their home life may not support working from home. Workplaces are great. The challenges is not to force people out but, for those who do want to go back, helped secure workplaces, testing, transport, to make them feel comfortable. We can find that balance and adapt going forward. You like that hybrid system going forward. I want to ask about taxation. An increase in cooperation and income tax is a possible way forward. Shouldnt people who have been fortunate pay more to aid the recovery . Around the world, countries are going to be thinking, how do we deal with the debt and cost of this crisis. One thing we know is that will be easy to do with a growing and thriving economy. With so much uncertainty i had, we have the pandemic but also the brexit deal. At the moment, it feels like investing in growth, getting the economy back on its feet is the most important thing. However the government decide the debt should be handled is to do it in the best possible way. Many thanks and enjoy the sound of silence with the kids backin the sound of silence with the kids back in school. A big week notjust because of the tapering of furlough but also people trying to get back into the office. An towns relying on that stream of business. We had a new year and it started in september. A dog has had a lucky escape after chasing seagulls into the sea off rhyl in north wales. The dog had to be rescued by lifeboat crew after ending up half a mile away from the shore. Lets take a look. Straight ahead. Come here. Youre not supposed to be this far out. Come here. What are you doing . Come here. You got her. Come on. Hello i now have the dog on board. Do you know where the owners are . Come on, mate. Just hold onto her. Yes, i have not her. She is all right. Lets speak to andy milne, a volunteer lifeboat crew member with the rnli in rhyl. Good morning. Well done, first of all. You get a call and you hear there is a dog that needs rescuing . Thats right. I was relaxing on a Bank Holiday Monday morning with the family and home and all of a sudden, being a volunteer, we are not always out of the station, but we got the call, came down to the station and we we re call, came down to the station and we were told there was a dog about half a mile out to see with the possibility that the owner wanted to go in after it. We launched to locate the dog and recover it back to her owner. The owner probably did exactly the right thing in alerting you are not following the dog out to see because, as anyone who owns a dog, once they find something they are dog, once they find something they a re interested dog, once they find something they are interested in, they do not give up. Exactly. This dog was after some seagull out to see and the sea got was happy flying away with a dog chasing it. They did the exact thing ringing 999 and not entering the water. If you or your dog get into difficulty that is who you ring. Especially across fast flowing water or cliffs. Do not enter the water as your dog goes in because sometimes the outcome is not as good as it was yesterday. That is a serious point. Half a mile, that dog is really quite some swimmer. half a mile, that dog is really quite some swimmer. I think she was going for a marathon swim. Yes, she was quite a way off but in good spirits and very well behaved. Was she pleased to see you, do you think, when you found her . She was a bit dubious at first with the bright orange boat coming towards but she was quite happy and was trying to put up all on the boat and tried to come up herself. Paw. You still dont know her name . I dont think the owner mentioned the name when we reignited her so it is the dog with no name. The owner been very grateful . He was, he was very pleased and probably quite a little bit emotional. Great work. Really appreciate your work. Thank you very much indeed. Saving the pooch in apparel iam much indeed. Saving the pooch in apparel i am fascinated by what the dog is called. These are new. Good morning to both of you. It is the first of september so the first day of the meteorological autumn and on the first of september the met Office Release storm names and they run until the end of august 2021. You may ask, how are they name . Invite members of the public to suggest names for future stops and in conjunction with the dutch broadcasting service, they come up with all of this to reflect the diversity in the Different Countries and lets hope we do not see any of them. Today we are looking at a mainly cloudy day. A chilly start for most of us. Through the day the cloud will build and spread out rather like you did yesterday. Northern ireland and the north west of scotla nd Northern Ireland and the north west of scotland especially, courtesy of this weather front moving west to east, bumping into the area of High Pressure and weakening all the time. Some missed around this morning. Most will lift readily. There is a cloud which should break for a time. In areas where we do not have a cloud, the cloud will build and spread out. A cloudy afternoon but still some sunshine. This weather front, as it bangs into the High Pressure, it will weaken and the rain turning lighter and patchy. Brightening up the cross ireland for the course of the afternoon. Through this evening and overnight, we hang onto a this evening and overnight, we hang ontoafair this evening and overnight, we hang onto a fair bit of cloud. Some clear skies and also showers with rain in parts of the west. By the end of the night, we will already be seeing signs of the next system from the atlantic. Temperatures not particularly low, in fact not as low as last night. Tomorrow, this is a front bringing in the rain at the end of the night, moving west to east, it will be windy on another front coming our way later. We start off with some sunshine. Again areas off with some sunshine. Again areas of cloud that would be usurped by this band of rain come this way. Greens and yellows signifying heavier bursts. Winds gusting 40 45 must an hour into the north west. The rain not getting to the far north east of scotland until after dark. Temperatures picking at 20 degrees tomorrow. Into thursday, we say goodbye to this front and the second one, a cold front, 16. Another windy day. There goes the first front, here is the second one, sinking down towards the south, taking cloud and patchy rain with it stop behind that, a mixture of sunshine. These white circles indicate sustained wind speed so gus will be higher than that, particularly across the north west. Gusts. Temperatures have gone up but they will not stay up. They will come back down. On friday, whether front taking rain north. Behind it a mixture of sunshine and showers. Breezy end of the north with highs of 19. I will have more later. Good morning, welcome to breakfast with dan walker and Louise Minchin. Our headlines today. Footballer Marcus Rashfords new goal. The Manchester United striker tells breakfast why hes heading up a task force to make sure children dont go hungry. I feel like at times people feel like theyre being looked down on if they ask somebody for help. And i think in this generation that we are in, thats one thing that should change. As many schools prepare to re open this week, theres a warning some children are now months behind in their learning. The diet that can defeat type two diabetes. The nhs is to hand out shakes and soups. Cameron norrie battles back. He was two sets down but came through to beat the ninth seed at the us open in new york. And the comedian alan davies will be here to tell us about how he used humour to help him overcome grief and trauma. Its tuesday 1st september. Our top story. The footballer Marcus Rashford has formed a taskforce to tackle child food poverty in the uk. Hes joining forces with Major Charities and supermarkets to call for more government funding. It comes just three months after his campaign led the government to change its mind over stopping Free School Meals during the Summer Holidays during lockdown. Hes been speaking exclusively to sally. When we last spoke, did you already know at that point that this wasnt the end . Yeah, i think we pretty much knew straightaway that, you know, wed found a short term solution, but that wasnt going to work in the long run. So we had to think about, you know, how is the best way to do it so that these families can eat long term and not have any issues. And then we wanted to do it in the best way that we could, so we wanted to introduce the correct people into our group and see if using them can can hopefully push it even more. And sally will have more of that exclusive interview with Marcus Rashford in a few minutes. Millions of children in england and wales are preparing to go back to school this week. For many it will be for the first time in six months. But theres a warning that many have fallen behind with their learning. Lets speak to our Political Correspondent chris mason whos in westminster. The schools minister was sat in that chair about half an hour ago, talking about the reopening of schools, which is top of the agenda for all those mps who have a new term to start this week. Yes, good morning. As ever the decision here on breakfast live every morning. This morning it was the schools minister nick gibb. There is a reasonable degree of confidence in government about schools reopening in england, happening also in wales this week as well, that is the responsibility of the welsh government. The westminster government are responsible for englands schools, there was one of those about turns in the summer when not as many pupils went back as ministers hoped for. This time they think head teachers and parents are on side, there has been time over the summer to put in all the necessary measures as far as social distancing is concerned. And those bubbles which will mean that pupils stay within their year group or within their class and can interact as normal within that bubble but keep away from other pupils, the rest of the time. Ministers pretty confident on that front. But plenty more in their intro to come as the autumn term starts for mps as well today as well as for schoolchildren. In terms of the challenges ahead for the government, speaking to nick gibb particularly, about the fact that quite a few tory mps are saying they want more direction and more clarity, they are fed up of those government u turns. There is a bit of disquiet from tory mps at the moment . Yes, more three point terms than the worlds most popular driving instructor in the last few months, with u turns as sally has been reporting on school meals, and ona been reporting on school meals, and on a level results, and plenty more. When you look at opinion polls, plenty of people beyond this westminster postcode are all for u turns if they think the government has you has turned in the right direction. But if you are an mp who is set out to defend an idea on shows like this and 45 minutes later it is scrapped, you would not be happy with what the government is doing. We are keeping an eye on in the moment about whether there is another tweak coming as fair as exams are concerned next year. This could be the first day of the new Academic Yearfor plenty could be the first day of the new Academic Year for plenty in england and wales but we are already looking towards the end of the year to gcses and a levels, and the prospect that those delays could be delayed to give pupils a bit more time to catch up. How soon can we get a decision . This is nick gibb about half an arrow go in this chair. We have been looking at this issue since mid june and we will come to a decision shortly so that schools will know what the position will be. We have changed the assessment process as well to make sure we can free up as much teaching time as possible so the young people can catch up. Its so important that young people now return to school. Loads more as well in the governments in trade this autumn. The furlough scheme, employers having to pay more as of today and the whole scheme will wrap up today and the whole scheme will wrap up at the end of october. What then happens to unemployment . There is a budget coming up with headline after headline talking about the potential for tax rises to plug the massive financial hole caused by the coronavirus. One final thought, brexit. Last year, i could not get through a single sentence without our old friend brexit. It will come back as an issue because the government is trying to get a brexit deal before the year is out. And its now september, there is a long left. So economically, socially, politically, there is not long left. Massively profound issues for the government and the rest of us to deal with. I have missed the government and the rest of us to dealwith. I have missed the hours of brexit chat, said no one, ever President Trump has defended the teenage gunman whos been charged with killing two people and injuring another during protests in the United States at the weekend. The president said the 17 year old appeared to have been acting in self defence, when he opened fire on those protesting about the shooting by police of the black man, jacob blake. He was trying to get away from them, i guess, it looks like. And he fell and then they vary violently attacked him. And it was something that we are looking at right now, and it is under investigation, but i guess he was in very big trouble. He probably would have been killed. But its under investigation. People with diabetes will be eligible for free meals in a new diet plan being launched by nhs england. Trials showed that half of those who followed the regime saw their type two diabetes go into remission after a year. Patients will also get advice from clinicians and be encouraged to increase their exercise levels. Type two diabetes has a massive impact on individuals and their lives. Its one of the commonest causes of blindness, kidney failure, amputations, increased risk of heart attack and strokes. So if we can support people to stay healthy, to put their type two diabetes into remission, i think the gains for individuals are huge. But the gains for the nhs and the taxpayer are very real as well. Employers who make use of the coronavirus furlough scheme will have to contribute to the cost from today. The government has paid 80 of a workers wages since march. Thats now going down to 70 . But Business Groups are warning employers may struggle to cover the costs. Our Business Correspondent katy austin reports. The Music Festivals this business normally provide sound systems for havent happened this year, so 170 staff have been furloughed. But the looming end of the Job Retention scheme has meant tough decisions. The fact that our costs would be ramping up in relation to the furlough scheme as of september the 1st, that was when we decided we needed to go through our initial round of redundancies. So we entered a consultation period injuly, we spoke to everybody in the company. We wanted to make sure that we were preparing ourselves for the worst. More than 9. 5 million jobs have been furloughed under the government scheme. From today, the state will pay 70 of affected employees wager, of affected employees wages, while the employer must pay 10 plus National Insurance and pension contributions. In october, the final month, it will be 60 from government and 20 paid by firms. One Business Group said that would be a struggle for some industries in particular. 19 of small employers say they are likely to reduce headcount in the next three months, and that is connected to the fact that people are now thinking about the future. Are these jobs there for people to come to return to . So we expect there will inevitably be an increase in unemployment, looking at sectors like wholesale and retail, manufacturing and construction and arts and entertainment. A £1000 bonus is being offered where firms keep on staff who had been furloughed until the end of january, but the british chambers of commerce warns financial pressures on businesses meant unemployment was likely to surge unless the cost of employing people was cut. A treasury spokesperson said supporting so many peoples incomes cant be sustained indefinitely, but that the government would continue to support and create jobs. Katy austin, bbc news. Good morning, you are watching practice from the bbc, it is 8am and we have an exclusive today. Marcus rashford is a man on a mission, to end child food poverty in the uk. The england footballer has set up a special task force to address the issue. Hes been speaking exclusively to sally all about it. Sally, youve sat down with marcus a number of times over the past few months and this is a big moment for him . It is, it is interesting because after his Free School Meals during the summer campaign, it went a little bit quiet and you might have thought, he has done what he set out to do. And thats it. Actually, that is not the case, he went away and started to really study the situation at the moment and work out what children in this country might need. As we said, i have been speaking to him about his latest project, the latest step in his campaign. Marcus rashford, what a summer you have had. A mothers pride. Manchester united and england star Marcus Rashford on the Family Support that changed government policy on Free School Meals. Shes rang me about ten times today. No, shes just very happy. And, you know, if someone, when she was going through it, if somebody would have spoke out and then maybe the situation would have been different. Youre ready to go again, arent you . Yeah, i think for my mentality, to do more, i think i have to put that to the back of my head now and focus on what i want to do next. And im just trying to get everything in place to give myself the best opportunity to be able to help these children. And then we wanted to do it in the best way that we could, so we wanted to introduce the correct people into our group and see if using them can hopefully push it even more. And now youve actually been to meet some of the families who have benefited from the change that you campaigned for over the summer. What was that like . Yeah, that was an unbelievable experience for me. Oh, youre going to get it . 0h you trying to hurt me . I thinkjust to see the smiles on their faces and to see how much it has helped them made me happy, to just see that actually with my own eyes rather than just people texting and messaging and stuff like that. One of the parents was getting emotional sometimes when we were speaking to each other. From a single parent, itjust helped him so much with getting food for himself. Thank you. Its not a problem, not a problem. Theyll stay with me anyway, because theyre so similar to my childhood. How long have yous been there then . Half an hour . Do yous play here all the time and stuff . Yeah. Yeah . A little safe zone, i used to call it my safe zone when i was a kid. Cos, you know, you dont want to be on the streets all the time. Youve spoken publicly before about stigma. How important is it that you are able to change attitudes about taking help when you need it . Yeah, i think it has massive importance, because, um, i feel like at times people think that theyre being looked down on if they ask somebody for help. And i think in this generation that were in, thats one thing that should change and you should feel free if you want to go and ask for help for anything. Its like if, like a kid when youre in school, if you need help doing maths or english, its natural for you tojust ask for help from the teacher. But because its something in a different light, its looked down upon. So, you know, for me, ijust say hold your head up high and if you need help, go and get help. Its a stigma, because they look at it as, oh, well, who goes to a food bank, who goes to these places . They look down on it. But when you speak about it and say youve been through it, thats giving enough families confidence to say, ok, hes been through it. And, its a only a situation and i can pass it and i can ask for that help. You said when we first spoke that this original campaign was a sticking plaster. This was just the start. Whats happening now, and what do you hope to achieve with the people youve got together . I think now were just introducing a few more people that we think can sort of push the points that we want across the public as well as us, or even better than us. So its aboutjust showing them that i believe that we can actually get things changed. Hello, everyone. Can everybody hear me . I just wanted to obviously thank everyone forjoining the call. And, you know, i really appreciate the help that yous have given. Youve got this task force behind you now. How important is it that people like the chief executives of british supermarkets get involved now . Yeah, its massive importance because, you know, those guys, were not specialists in the area, they actually are. So im learning so much more whilst im on the call, theyre giving me facts ive not heard before, like figures that have sent me a bit like, wow, this is their line of work. So theyve been a huge plus for us to have them in our little team. Im very ambitious as a person myself. So its important that we speak about team that weve brought in to help us. I just see ambition in all of them. And, you know, theyre all going to work as hard as they can. Because of the job that you have, pretty much every day for the next however many months is planned, decided, you know where youre going to be. How are you going to find the time to do all of this . I think illjust try and work in and around the games and the training sessions. Its probablyjust going to be more difficult for me to be face to face with people when were having these conversations. But, you know, welljust have to facetime and call because its so important to stay in the loop of things and just being with them for each step is whats important. So thats what im going to try and do. Well, thejourney starts now. Are you excited about that . Are you ready for it . I think its definitely exciting because its going to help families pretty much straightaway. So, yeah, im definitely excited for them. And, you know, hopefully we can do it for them. Well be watching every step of the way. Thank you. So there you have it, that is Marcus Rashford, talking at length about the next steps that he wants to take. You might remember last time Marcus Rashford launched a campaign, he had to wait a few days for a government response, he has not had to wait so long this time. Speaking on breakfast a short time ago, the schools minister nick gibb said the government will be looking closely at the specific requests marcus has made. Id be delighted to meet Marcus Rashford and we are looking at all the policy suggestions that he has put forward in his letter to make sure they do deliver on a shared objective, which is alleviating the kind of poverty he talks about. Were joined now by the head of the National Food strategy, david dimbleby. Strategy, henry dimbleby. And richard walker, the managing director of iceland, one of the supermarkets thats part of the Marcus Rashford taskforce. Good morning, gentlemen. Henry, ifi can come to you, why is a National Food strategy needed and important . The purpose of the National Food strategy was to create a food system that not only provides food for all of us, but does so without making us sick and while restoring the environment. Im delighted that marcus has put his efforts and name behind three of the recommendations. Its increasingly clear that long after this virus has passed, we will be able to feel its presence not only in the grief of thousands of families who have lost loved ones, asa families who have lost loved ones, as a couch in our economy, but also in the bodies and the prospects of our most vulnerable children. These three measures that marcus is putting his weight behind are an attempt to make sure that the government does everything it can to improve the prospects of the most vulnerable in society to ensure that they at a minimum get back to getting nutritious food. How important is it that children are fed properly, but just important is it that children are fed properly, butjust in the middle of the day but in breakfast clubs and after school clubs, and how important is it what they are given . It extraordinarily important. The effects of hunger at its most extreme on young bodies is serious and long lasting, it alters the bodys structure forever, malnutrition in pregnancy is linked to further problems. It causes struggles and mental illness, it is an acute and long term political issue. I believe the government understands the problem that these levers that are proven and have value for money, with belt tightening across the board, it will bea tightening across the board, it will be a strong signal from government that they are not going to go back to austerity and they will support the most vulnerable, nutrition is the most vulnerable, nutrition is the very basis of equality. You cannot level up if you do not get nutrition into the most vulnerable children. Richard walker from iceland, tell me why it was important for you to be involved in the Rashford Task force and what a supermarket brings. The first thing to say is that the leadership that marcus has shown is absolutely phenomenal. And as a retailer, we and many others are delighted to support this. For us, this is a really important issue because we mapped our 1000 stores over the governments areas of deprivation and Child Poverty and they match exactly. This is an issue that we ca re exactly. This is an issue that we care deeply about because we are speaking to our customers every day and we see the issues on the ground. Before covid, there were over 4 million kids in poverty in the uk. Since covid, 730,000 people have lost theirjobs, and when the furlough scheme ends, that will be even more. So many families and children are being touched by this andl children are being touched by this and i dont think theres anything more important than trying to give kids the best start in life. And with seemingly dickensian levels of poverty in this country and millions of children going hungry, we want to do everything we can to support marcus in his quest to try and raise theseissues marcus in his quest to try and raise these issues with the government and affect positive change. Richard, you are one of several supermarkets, pretty much every supermarket has signed up for the task. What can you offer in practical terms . People will be watching thinking, big supermarkets make a lot of money, what can you bring . Firstly, we can join together as a sector, which we have seen through covid, the way the sector worked with the government and dealt with unprecedented panic buying, for example. We can Work Together to advocate and push and promote government to adopt an extension to these healthy starter vouchers, and an increase in the value of them. But also as a sector, i think we can do more and Work Together to try and promote Healthy Eating across any demographic of society. That is particularly true for our customers, the 5 million customers we serve up and down the uk. Listening to that, we are talking about big supermarkets getting involved and also the government getting involved. Where is the funding going to come from . think there is clearly going to be that we are coming up to the comparative spending review, the government will be deciding on its priorities over the next five years. Its clear that one of those priorities has to be to support the nutrition of our most vulnerable children. This is clearly something that has excellent value for money and is very well targeted. And i am glad that the supermarket, one thing they can do which they indicated they can do which they indicated they are willing to do is to put their money where their mouth is. In terms of the healthy start vouchers, which enable the parents of Young Children and pregnant women to buy fruit, vegetables and milk, the supermarkets have indicated they are willing to top that up. I think this is something that government and Society Needs to fall behind. is something that government and Society Needs to fall behind. I have heard you talk in detail previously about the way we feed our children in schools. Do you think there needs to bea in schools. Do you think there needs to be a shift in the way we think about the way we think about people who work in schools . We think about people ate dinner ladies and things like that, do we need to raise the status of the person who provides our children with food . Absolutely, so the school food, for those who have not been into a school for a while, it is much better than it was ten, 15 years ago, thanks in part to the work of jamie ten, 15 years ago, thanks in part to the work ofjamie oliver, but more thanks to her teachers and cooks around the country. School cooks are still the only employees who come in and leave the school through the back door. The dining hall needs to be central to the whole school, you need a one School Approach where the dining hall is where you eat together and learn together, and the whole status of food, there are a lot of schools doing Amazing Things but we can do much more. The state of the school cook who feed our children, is as important as any teacher and that needs to be recognised. Thank you both very much indeed for talking to us this morning. There you have it. The latest step in Marcus Rashford Plasma Campaign to alleviate Child Poverty and feed children in school time and now also out of school time, he is talking about breakfast school clubs, after school clubs and school clubs, after school clubs and School Holidays when some children dont have the support they would normally have during term time. Its really clear that his passion about this really shines through and resonate with people. Its really interesting, because i think for lots of footballers, it can be quite difficult to speak out about an issue and at the very start of this, we spoke to Marcus Rashford and said, some people will criticise you for this, and he thought about it for this, and he thought about it for maybe a second and went, i dont care. Hes certainly not spouting off. We spoke to the schools minister nick gibb who says he will meet with Marcus Rashford. He wants to follow this through and make a difference. And the difference this time is this is a very collaborative approach. Marcus rashford has approached the government and said, this is what i want to see happen, can we talk about it . As you said, early indications are that the government will talk to him. imagine you will be talking to him again soon. Perhaps and welcome back to the studio for one day only thank you, i love it you are watching bbc breakfast, still to come. Well be live in birmingham to see how teachers in england are preparing to welcome their students back safely. We will bring you the latest news and sport, the time is 8 27am. I was looking to your next picture, carol, that is a beauty isnt it just good isnt itjust good morning, what a gorgeous highland cow and a gorgeous skyline. There is some messed around but that will go quite quickly because the sun is well and truly up there is some mist around. We are starting on a sunny note with clear skies so occult that for some. Only 6 degrees in some places. A cold start for some. In the north west highlands, it is 15 degrees because we have a weather front steadily coming in from the west bringing some rain. For most of us, a sunny start but through the day, the cloud will build and it will spread out. There will still be sunshine and bright spells through the afternoon nonetheless. This is the weather front coming in from the west, crossing Northern Ireland and scotland, bumping into the High Pressure and continuing to weaken. The rain will turn lighter and more patchy before fizzling out. After the sunny start, the cloud will build and become widespread. There will still be bright and sunny skies. This is where we expect the weather front to be by 4pm, weakening all the time. North east scotla nd weakening all the time. North east scotland seeing something brighter. The weather front will have cleared Northern Ireland but for the rest of england and wales, a fair bit of cloud around at times with some brighter skies in between. The temperature range, 14 in the north to 19 or 20 at temperature range, 14 in the north to 19 or20 ata temperature range, 14 in the north to 19 or 20 at a push towards the south. Temperaturesjust to 19 or 20 at a push towards the south. Temperatures just a to 19 or 20 at a push towards the south. Temperaturesjust a little bit higher than yesterday. This evening and overnight, clear skies and clouds and still some rain across western areas. By the end of the night, the next system coming in from the west which will also bring some rain. It will not be a cold night, not as cold as the one just gone. Tomorrow, the rain goes from west to east, you can see the bright colours indicating heavy bursts. A windy day tomorrow, especially with exposure in the north west where we could have gusts up to 45 miles an hour. The rain not getting into the far north east of scotland or the far north east of scotland or the far south east of scotland england until after dark. On thursday, we say goodbye to the weather front but we have another one following through sinking south, a cold front which will introduce cloud and patchy rain across southern areas. Behind that, north of that, a mixture of bright spells, sunshine and showers. There will be a brisk winter during thursday anywhere, but the strongest winds will be across the north west. 14 in lerwick to 22 or 23 in the south east. Whatever you are doing, have a great day. Hello, this is breakfast with Louise Minchin and dan walker. Teachers in england and wales are finally preparing to welcome their students back to the classroom. Many for the First Time Since march. Our education correspondent Elaine Dunkley is at a school in birmingham to see how they are planning to keep everybody safe. What a lovely corridor, and in brea kfast what a lovely corridor, and in breakfast colours. Reporter yes, and look at the Jewellery Quarter Academy in birmingham. Here, we look after one another, it says. There are no students here today but there are no students here today but there are teachers preparing to get all the year groups back, they have training days and there is a lot of preparation that needs to happen before children can go back to schools. This is the drama plot, we had teachers waiting for us, we have the head teacher, mr williams, we have the drama teacher, aimee bowen and the head of science, akil dowe. We will chat to them soon, but first i have been talking to families about how they are feeling. The last time they walked through the school gates was six months ago. We have been following families throughout lockdown in liverpool. I want to go back. As they face the challenges of missing best friends. She has been getting a bit upset sometimes. And classes. I actually want someone who is actually professional to, like, teach me by the way, hes not. Alicia, alexis and leighton are all about to start secondary school. I am nervous but i am also excited to step in. We went from, like, the biggest in the school and now were going to, like, the littlest. Going to secondary school has always been a big milestone and, with bubbles, facemaks and staggered starts, things will be very different. The children will be staying in the classrooms and it will be the teachers that move about. So with normal secondary schools they move from class to class, so it is kind of going to be a little bit still like Primary School. On the day i go, i will be very nervous knowing that im just going to go to high school. It is a bit strange knowing that we might have to wear a face mask to school but it will be safer. How do you feel about catching up on work and things like that . Have you got any concerns about that . I am kind of scared about catching up on it because i have forgotten a lot of things from primary ad i need to catch up on it a lot. But everyone else will be in the same position, wont they . Yeah. They may have missed time in class but these families have learned a lot about each other. What have you enjoyed doing most as a family . We have spent a lot of time together, havent we . Weve done played loads of board games and it has been nice to be able to spend time with them, whereas before i was working all the time and they were in school. We have had a lot of time to, like, bond and it has been really nice to notjust like get up and get out of the house to school. It has been nice, like, to kind ofjust roll with it. They will be catching up with schoolwork and friends. This new term has felt like a long time coming. It will be good for them to get back to school, get back to normal or the new normal, as everyone is saying. How do you feel about me going back to school . I am nervous, i am excited, i am worrying but i am happy and i am glad that you are able to go back and get back into some kind of routine. For these families, like so many others, the return to school feels like the return to some level of normality. That is how families and children are feeling, let her teachers are feeling. That morning, mr williams, how are you feeling about the new term . Really excited, absolutely thrilled. We had some last minute work to do with staff in preparation for thursday but we will invite all the students back and we are looking forward to seeing them, it has not been the same, the building has not had the life that we need, it is a very important day. More than 500 stu d e nts very important day. More than 500 students will come to the door, they need to have their temperature checked before coming in, what other measures to you having place . Staggered start to the day, students are writing at different entrances. When they come through the door, if they had been Wearing Masks they will put them into plastic bags and use a hand sanitiser stations all the washing stations to make sure they are absolutely clean to proceed into their designated area. Throughout the day, they will be in a class bubble and any recreation times are in a year group bubble, thatis times are in a year group bubble, that is staggered so they never cross path with other year groups and having their own designated areas. Lots of work has gone on to make that happen, it will be successful. What have been the ha rd est successful. What have been the hardest parts successful. What have been the ha rd est parts of successful. What have been the hardest parts of this for you . Schools were effectively closed in march, only open to children of key workers and families needing extra support, what has been the hardest pa rt support, what has been the hardest part as a teacher . Probably the most challenging aspect is nothing stu d e nts challenging aspect is nothing students face to face. It is more difficult to pick up nuances and any challenges unless you have them in front of you and you can have a protracted conversation, so that has been most difficult. We have planned ahead regardless, we have had Virtual Learning on going the whole time and a number of enrichment activities including drama across the tyne, so we like to think stu d e nts the tyne, so we like to think students have not missed out at all. My students have not missed out at all. My staff have been phenomenal in delivering all sorts of resources to the student so they do not miss out, so those gaps and deficits are as minimalas so those gaps and deficits are as minimal as they can be. There has been a survey of 3000 head teachers and they feel students are about three months behind in their learning, there is a lot of catching up learning, there is a lot of catching up to do, how are you feeling . Optimistic. Of course it is a challenge but we will be doing lots of things as a school, one of the things is extra classes at the end of the school day, on saturdays and on holiday time. The Virtual Learning will carry on regardless and there are lots of other resources we have bought in order to secure the student peer features. We have the drama teacher, aimee bowen. Drama will feel very different, stu d e nts drama will feel very different, students will have to socially distance. What will you do for them to get the best lessons they can . Practical will still happen, minimal groups, pairs or three practical will still happen, minimal groups, pairs orthree instead practical will still happen, minimal groups, pairs or three instead of six or seven any group. As they are in the costumes they have the desks, it is looking up the skills they need to learn to carry on ntp stage for unsightly differentiating. We have monologues and radio plays, they are learning those key skills but not as involved together. And the strict rules, keeping apart, only working with certain groups. All peoples will be placed in groups and stay in them, even though they are in classroom bubbles they will be in smaller groups working and nobody will be swapping. It will be slightly different. Mr dowe, head of science, usually students move around, how difficult will that be when children need to be in science labs . Science is a very practical subject, we have lots of different experiments as part of the gcse course. We have measures for that, we have bought software which will allow students to do those practical, almost like simulations, ta ke practical, almost like simulations, take the results the same way and re cord take the results the same way and record them like any normal experiment. The lads will be sanitised in between, for example for year 11 when they are doing their gcse required practicals, the labs will be sanitised between lessons to make sure students are coming into the safest environment. You feel you can meet the full curriculum. Is with exams next year . I think curriculum. Is with exams next year . Ithink so, curriculum. Is with exams next year . I think so, we have curriculum. Is with exams next year . Ithink so, we have had curriculum. Is with exams next year . I think so, we have had a very successful call connects programme which many students have bought into, we have recorded online master classes, revision tools allowing students to best prepare for exams, to go through exam technique and re call to go through exam technique and recall and revise those techniques and those bits of subject matter they learn to enyeama nine and ten, we will continue to use up strategically, whether after school, on saturdays and so on so that students have the best opportunity for success in september. Thank you so much. Lots going on, teaches busy preparing, sorting out the logistics and because planned for the students, it will feel very new for most students and very unfamiliar, but with all the year groups coming back it will feel a bit more like life before lockdown. Studio elaine, 20 very much. Sally has been talking about her exclusive interview with Marcus Rashford elaine, thank you very much. Kat is entirelys usual seat in the sports bureau. Reporter ilike entirelys usual seat in the sports bureau. Reporter i like the fact that i work in a bureau now, it is very important sounding tennis fans will have tuesday up late to catch the best of the action. It was a real treat, the us open yesterday. Tennis fans will have to stay up late. What a day it was for Britains Cameron Norrie, as the us open got under way in new york. He came from two sets down to beat the ninth seed, diego schwartzman, saving two match points in the decider thats undoubtedly the biggest win of his career. Kyle edmund also had to come from behind, to beat Alexander Bublik in four sets. But its going to be much tougher in the next round he plays the world number one Novak Djokovic. And later on, andy murray begins his first grand slam since last yea rs australian open, and the hip operation that saved his career. Hes still struggling to get used to playing without a crowd. He plays Yoshihito Nishioka laura. Usually this place is filled with energy and atmosphere before the tournament starts, now it is tennis players and their teams Walking Around with masks on. It is very different and a bit sad. Like i said, i dont know, the fans give life to the tournament, they give life to the tournament, they give life to the tournament, they give life to your matches and your practices. 3est life to your matches and your practices. Best of luck to andy murray, who has been playing brilliantly on his metal hip. Great Britains Adam Yates is still four seconds behind leader Julien Alaphilippe after stage three of the tour de france, which was won by caleb ewan in a sprint finish. The australian, nicknamed the pocket rocket, surging past irelands sam bennett to take it. Defending champion egan bernal has moved up to sixth place overall. Fans of shamrock rovers are looking forward to a huge tie in the Europa League. Theyve been drawn against ac milan, the seven time european champions, in the second round of qualifying. So the likes of Zlatan Ibrahimovic could be going to dublin for the single legged tie later this month, which makes it all the more frustrating for supporters that they wont be able to go to the game. It isa it is a bittersweet feeling, to be honest. Without a shadow of the judge, ac milan of the biggest individual, the seven time european champions, absolute superstars in the side. But you cant help but think you wish you were there. Atrium jewel for a smaller club, if the fund could have been that it would have been a bumper pay day, but they will not have the dream draw at the san siro for the second leg, it is a one legged tie, so anything can happen in one night. I could not see the highlights wheel at the start andi the highlights wheel at the start and i think it is probably the longest i have ever had, i am concerned about what you were watching because if i am undecided not have many highlights. There was a lot of trophy listing, it was the good stuff the glamorous side of thejob, the good stuff the glamorous side of the job, the easy side. In the book, you talk about the glamorous side, but it is called the hurt, you talk about the painful side. The impact of the sport on peoples bodies is quite something . I get this. Because of the title, the hurt, and the media snippet, they also because on thejuicy and media snippet, they also because on the juicy and almost the negative connotations of the game. Rugby has given me so much as well, good friends, good memories, a rear, things i would never have experienced playing any other sport, soiam so experienced playing any other sport, so i am so grateful, i and a massive advocate of rugby, i love the game, but there is a by product of the game, the injuries. My experience in the professional game, lots of disciplinary issues, so the ups and talent, the turbulent sight of that. There is quite a lot of mental attrition in the game, we look at the physical side but the mental side is fairly hefty. That is just a bit of the boot, there is plenty of good stuff as well. You dont want to talk about the bits that hurt, andi to talk about the bits that hurt, and i will move on, but there is a point where you are going to a wedding and you have to have the swelling on your knee drained, most of us do not have to do that think the game is quite macho, culturally, and that type of thing happens quite a lot, especially in the professional game. I cannot speakfor the professional game. I cannot speak for grassroots but it is a ha rd speak for grassroots but it is a hard game played by hard people. There are plenty of other things that happens, what i have tried to do with the boot is give. We have just lost you. Pick it up again. You just lost you. Pick it up again. You just froze, carry on. I have tried to give people an insight through my eyes into the stuff you dont see, tried to be as honest as i can about the not so shiny stuff that we see ona the not so shiny stuff that we see on a saturday. You are very honest about things like. Shall be called an Dylan Hartleys controversies . You are smiling, but since 2007 you we re you are smiling, but since 2007 you were banned for a total of 60 weeks. You look back on some of those that think you shouldnt have done that, or you have talked about them being pa rt or you have talked about them being part and parcel of the game, was it pa rt part and parcel of the game, was it part of your character and the way you played the game that you could not change, if you like . you played the game that you could not change, if you like . I cant change and, if im honest, it gave me plenty to write about. One of my friends who are still playing, he said, who do you throw under the bus with your book . He said, to make it interesting you will have to say some controversial things. I said, no one, i basically threw myself under the bus eight or nine times during my career so i have plenty to talk about without talking about other people. I am quite philosophical about it, all roads lead to where i am now, if anything it taught me about resilience, goal setting, comebacks, these kinds of things. There is always a narrative that i was a player that attracted the wrong headlines, but i kind of enjoyed the fact that it was a lwa ys kind of enjoyed the fact that it was always stacked against me and i still managed to come back and play the amount of games i did for england and the club. Lets talk about the highs. Hopefully i get this right, 85 win rate as captain, six nations titles, series win in australia, which was the best . They we re australia, which was the best . They were all great, winning trophies and listing trophies is great, but it is actually the unseen stuff which the book probably covers that leads to those moments. They are all sweet, but when you work and you graft, you get that satisfaction from putting yourself through that pain, the mental attrition i talked about, she finally left something. It is a small moment but it makes the hard work and the mental stress and us all worthwhile. The best moment was probably sustaining a career in by probably sustaining a career in rugby with all the knock backs and personal setbacks, the injuries that ihad, it personal setbacks, the injuries that i had, it was sustaining a rare net that i am most proud of. i had, it was sustaining a rare net that i am most proud of. I must ask about your relationship with eddie jones, the man who asked you to be england captain. I will not ask you to repeat the famous quote about making it clear you were coming towards retirement, but in terms of working with him, somebody he was able to get the best out of you and others, what did you learn from eddiejones . Others, what did you learn from eddie jones . Everybody just wants to know about eddie straightaway, i love you have asked me six questions about the book and me first he gave me some harsh words that we cannot say on breakfast television, or at any time, really when you are a competitor, a sportsman, trying to come back from injury, you always have hope, and deep down i kind of knew that it was not happening for me, he was the third person that told me bluntly i dont have any hope, as i heard that it made me process it, deal with age, talk to my wifejo, process it, deal with age, talk to my wife jo, talk to process it, deal with age, talk to my wifejo, talk to my club coach and start the retirement process. He did not end my career, my knee ended my career, he was just the prettily direct person that told me the news i probably did not want to hear. As a coach, that is exactly what you wa nt a coach, that is exactly what you want in that environment. It has been fascinating to talk to you. Can i ask you one final question . Here is the adhering designer in your house, i am achieved by the blackwall, the black door, black skating. It is dark green. We have to Young Children and i have had to escape to what looks like a dungeon, actually i had to move things off the mantelpiece to the advice from your end, they did not want to clutter the room. But my wife is in charge. A lovely dark green, please do not tell her i said it was black it is very calming, try it. Thank you, Dylan Hartley. Dellas autobiography is called the hurt, it isa autobiography is called the hurt, it is a very interesting read, notjust for those into rugby and sport. From solving crimes as Jonathan Creek to driving the hosts of q slightly mad, alan davies has been part of some of the most popular shows on tv. Hes now written a memoir, looking back on his childhood and how its shaped him. Before we speak to alan, lets see him in action on 01. Injuly 2018 a in july 2018 a twitter user called sam johnson said, going through some old photos, a welcome surprise. Laughter it is, in fact, alan davies. Would you stand up next to it . Well, i think she is gorgeous laughter wow that is one of my favourite moments from 01, lets say good morning to alan davies, whojoins us from home. It is moments like that which make it a delight to work in television sometimes . Yes, it is a delight to be part of 01. That photo was sent to me by someone on social media but they didnt tell me they had it and they were going to put it on screen, they do not tell me anything. But it is extraordinary, it really looks like me uncanny. I a lwa ys it really looks like me uncanny. I always presume with these things that you might know. They hide it from me, they keep it all from me. It is better that way, really. It is better for it is better that way, really. It is betterfor me to it is better that way, really. It is better for me to react off that cuff than to try to think of some terrible joke than to try to think of some terriblejoke and than to try to think of some terrible joke and get it wrong. The devoted floundering has worked for me over the years. It brings us nicely into your book, it is well thought through, it has gone to your childhood, some of the things you have been through, what sort of process was it for you, somebody used to stand up comedy, to write something so open and honest about things you have been through . This is quite the opposite of the wilted and floundering, although that has project the process of memoir writing, i had gone back into my childhood and dealt with some of the more difficult times i had been unable to approach in stand up comedy and certainly not on 01. When you are writing a memoir, certainly without much distance, it is like you are in a dark room with a lot of objects you cannot see, changes find something to latch onto, a memory or event, then work your way into the next one and build up a picture that is truthful, emotionally. It is quite a long process, i did a writing course to help me do it, i really wa nted writing course to help me do it, i really wanted to tell the story, and here it is, it has taken me three yea rs here it is, it has taken me three years so i put in the others. Anybody who reads it, your honesty is something to behold, you talk about painful things in your life, you also talk about your mum and youre you also talk about your mum and you re really you also talk about your mum and youre really fond memories of her. I lost my mum when i was six and subsequently there were quite difficult times ahead, which i tried to address in the present day, that is the structure of the book. Some of it is quite alarming and shocking. I try to keep detached and approach it with some humour, but the memories of my mum, ijust had to write a list because they are so few, really, and some are very clear. The one i come back to so often is just talking to a builder next to our house, i was about 304, isaid, next to our house, i was about 304, i said, what is your name and he said Engelbert Humperdinck. I was about three or four. My men really laughed, i asked about three or four. My men really laughed, iasked him his name about three or four. My men really laughed, i asked him his name again and he said Engelbert Humperdinck again. Little snatches that tell me about her and me, and the friendship i lost at the age of six. My children are four, nine and ten and having them help me write the book, seeing them pass to the ages where i went through some more difficult times made me reappraise who i was asa times made me reappraise who i was as a boy and make me want to tell that boy some story which i had slightly brushed under the carpet. You think your use of humour, and professionally now as well, started early in life as a coping mechanism . I think early in life as a coping mechanism . Ithink so, early in life as a coping mechanism . I think so, i think humour is a great deflector and we all use it at different times if things are feeling uncomfortable, i think my humour began with my mum and it sustains me to more difficult times with my father and my family more generally. The book takes me up to beginning to be a stand up comedian andjumps to beginning to be a stand up comedian and jumps to now, i write a debate about remembering entertaining my mother by lying on the floor and waving my legs in the conifers 40 when i was a 22 year old stand up comedian and about four of my routines involve me on the floor. It was only when i wrote the book that i realised it was obvious i was trying to replicate a deep seated feeling that gave me so much pleasure. None of my other contemporaries, eddie izzard orjack dee, were lying on the floor, it was only me. You are getting back to some live gigs, but socially distanced. Are you excited, relieved, how do you feel . Very believe that comedy is slightly coming back but very alarmed for the future of the industry and theatre, a difficult time for many of my friends. I had a in Greenwich Park at the end of september, the audience are not undercover so i am hoping for good weather. I know comedians are getting back to it, i did afor comedians are getting back to it, i did a for the first time in a on saturday night and the audience were on picnic tables in the rain, but they were amazingly up for it. Hopefully comedy can return and i will not lose too many people from the profession we will not lose too many. Thank you so much for your time. Alans book is called just ignore him. Which i dont think we should do. Dont. It is a difficult read but a good one. That is all from us today, we will be back tomorrow at six. Goodbye. Hi, good morning, this is victoria derbyshire. Welcome to bbc news with the latest headlines. Back to school for pupils in england and wales, but a warning that some children are months behind in their learning.
