Joe bidens victory. That talks would fail. I stand ready to talk to anybody, ourfriends and partners in the eu, whenever they want. And the sweet sounds of harmony in congress, at the moment i have to tell not a headline i read every day. You, in all candour, the treatys not there yet. Or ever. For many uk businesses, with just three weeks to go before the new arrangements, the uncertainty is overwhelming. Its really hard, because all the time theres that feeling, like, are we doing the right thing, is there something more we should be doing than what we are doing, are we missing out on something, hello, im Laura Trevelyan are we going to be ready . In new york, Christian Fraser is in london. Well be asking how the prime a top Us Government advisory ministers blunt Assessment Panel is meeting now, is going down in brussels. Deciding whether to grant emergency also tonight. Authorisation for the first coronavirus vaccine. Its made by pfizer and biontech. The vaccine is sorely needed here, with new daily records being set for infection, hospitalisations and deaths. A critical moment once the fda has the committees approval it will sign off on the emergency use authorisation. And by the weekend the centers for Disease Control and prevention will meet to decide who should receive those early doses. The First Americans could be vaccinated by monday. Heres the fda commissioner stephen hahn love career Scientists Say the vaccine is safe and effective i have com plete vaccine is safe and effective i have complete confidence that i think the American People should as well. Were joined now by dr lawrence corey, a virologist at Fred HutchinsonCancer Research center and co leader of the vaccine testing program. Lovely to have you with us on the programme. Im sure youve been looking through the data as well. Im hoping since we have been it that this vaccine, pfizer, you have not seen anything alarming. A lot of collaboratory data say that it is highly effective, some data in fact, many data saying that they have seen some saying that its even better than the package it is one case vaccine in 14 of placebo. I believe you have evidence that this vaccine andi you have evidence that this vaccine and i think what we have seen in the press report and this is a highly effective vaccine and should be used. To doses, we should remind people. What protection that does that first dose get. Everyone got the second dose and it was three weeks later. The fact that you see some protection for two weeks of 2000 people got the vaccine, got the second dose, that is precious little data that i think you have to go with two doses. Only 6196 of americans say they will take the vaccine, do we not need more to take it to be effective . Of course, especially if its of benefit, we found out that it prevents symptomatic disease and prevent hospitalisation in preventing evan to go to the intensive care unit. A symptomatically, could you acquire is to be infectious, that is a different kind of study. So more is needed. The issue here is that it is a personal benefit. You cannot assume that if you did it, there some herd immunity thats going to happen, that is not going to happen and we have lots of coverage, 80 or 85 of people vaccinated. And we have lots of coverage, 80 or 8596 of people vaccinated. Meanwhile, more than 3100 people died here in the us yesterday and so, how effective is the vaccine going to be we have just if given effective is the vaccine going to be we havejust if given million initially . We are all going to have to cope with vaccine scarcity and we wa nt to to cope with vaccine scarcity and we want to effectively use every dose thatis want to effectively use every dose that is there and is rapidly to the people that need it. The programme in the United States is always been directed at having multiple vaccines because we knew vaccine scarcity was going to be a global problem. Its the reasons why we work with Large Companies and Large Manufacturing capabilities. In our country and only enough for hundred Million People and the high risk is 2 Million People. We need other vaccines to be licensed and we need to use them effectively and we will need to vaccinated essentially everybody and my country, your country. And they are operating with officials to look at the Distribution Plan and joe biden says he has not seen any details yet and from the people theyve spoken to, do you think the plan is sufficient as it stands and is probably funded . Probably not entirely funded well enough but the weight is being done, we have so many different plans because their 50 different states and thereve been a lack of communication and i do have confidence in the Health Department and its occurring very rapidly and seems to be not as transparent or as opaque, we need the media to help us explain things to people and we need to have a transparent way that defines what is equitable and balancing the elderly with those that have essential occupations to make sure that people of colour have access to the vaccine and that we ta ke access to the vaccine and that we take it out as equitably as he possibly can. Thank you so much for joining us. On wednesday more than three thousand one hundred people here in the us died from covid 19 a grim new record, bringing the overall death toll to more than two hundred and ninety thousand. Joining us now is fiana tulip, who lost her mother to the virus over the summer. Were so sorry for your loss were so grateful to you forjoining us today. Can you tell us what goes through your mind when you hear that 3100 died just yesterday . through your mind when you hear that 3100 died just yesterday . I am heartbroken. Ijust do not know what to say. As the numbers keep rising and rising, keep thinking about how my mom is one of those people, one of the 280,000 plus people who have died and it hurts. It hurts because i worried that my mom is going to be forgotten because more people are dying and it breaks my heart that so many families are dealing with the nightmare that i am dealing with. Before we get to the politics, tell us before we get to the politics, tell us about your mom. She was beautiful inside and out. She had the smile of gold and she was so loving. She was a respiratory therapist and in her role, people just adored a respiratory therapist and in her role, peoplejust adored her and they wanted her to be there respiratory therapist because she would sit with them and listen to them. And beyond that, she had colic so them. And beyond that, she had colic so tell me that she was like a mom to me and family who just talks to her every day. I am not sure how she was there to do all the stuff she did because she was a present in my life, even though we are thousands of miles away. But, she found the time because she loved and she had a heart of gold. Did she catch it at work . It is likely that she caught it at work. She did not go anywhere else other than work and home. She walked her dogs but that was it. She had delivered and she knows that there were other people at work and caught the virus, other colleagues and she knows that there were other people at work caught the virus, other colleagues in the patients. When you see people still not taking the restriction seriously comes not Wearing Masks what is message to them . It is so hard. It is frustrating because i have been on this crusade to bring light to our stories, the ones who have lost a loved one and educate people about the virus and at this point, i want people to know that it is not me versus you , people to know that it is not me versus you, it is us versus the virus in order to combat the screen, we have to unite and come together. I also want people to remember that at the end of the day, it is our Health Care Workers who are tired and exhausted and risking their lives to save us and so, you may think oh, all my life and travel for the holidays, youre not risking your life, you will probably be ok, but the person next to you or the respiratory therapist who was an amazing mom are an amazing grandmother may not make it out alive. Ordinarily, the commander in chief would be consoling the families helping the nation to heal and giving people some hope, does he frustrate you that they hardly even mentioned that the president s press briefings. It absolutely frustrates me. We have not received any kind of acknowledgement or notice and you have no idea how good it felt when joe biden stood up behind the podium and he started his speech with acknowledging us and acknowledging the families who are hurting and have lost a loved one. It meant everything to us and that we, the ones who are grieving, the ones were suffering have to be out there every day shouting, screaming, reminding people of our loved ones and reminding people to take Safety Measures when all we want to do is be sad increase is so hard and it is maddening. We should be crying with herfamily but maddening. We should be crying with her family but instead, we are out there trying to prevent other people from living this. Thank you for joining us in remembering your mother. Thank you for having me. The darkest hour is always before dawn. But the mood around the brexit negotiations feels very tense right now, with just a few days left to the new deadline on sunday. The eu has published its contingency plans in the event of a no post brexit trade agreement. A series of short term mini deals to cover the movement of planes, lorries and fishing boats. With 22 days to the end of the transition there is very little time left. And there is already a problem at the british ports, with christmas backlogs caused by the pandemic. And there are jitters on the markets. Sterling is just below its highest level of the year reflecting confidence that a deal will be done but it slumped a little today after the Prime Minister warned no deal was now a distinct possibility. And so, we agree very strongly that we are and so, we agree very strongly that we a re really and so, we agree very strongly that we are really not there yet at all and what i said to our negotiators is, weve got to keep going and who will go the extra mile and we will andi will go the extra mile and we will and i will go to brussels, i will go to paris, or wherever to try to get this home and get a deal but theres a lwa ys this home and get a deal but theres always a possibility, the prospect of coming out on australian terms, which i believe are very good terms and asi which i believe are very good terms and as i say, can prosper mightily and as i say, can prosper mightily and that future which is just around the corner. Lets get the view from both political capitals now. George parker is the Political Editor of the financial times, in london and Tony Connelly is rtes europe editor, in brussels. Let me start with you. All leaders say there are periods of intense loneliness when it comes to the very biggest decisions and i dare say there are some lower moments for the Prime Minister at the moment. But he think the calculation is that is making in his head . think the calculation is that is making in his head . I think is genuinely depressed about the state of the trade negotiations of the eu, but rather a desperate dinner. He came back thinking there had been no movement on the european side it all and conversely, the european said there seem to be no movement from borisjohnson, there seem to be no movement from Boris Johnson, sums of there seem to be no movement from borisjohnson, sums of completely wasted mission as far as we can tell. They came back and very depressed frame of mind and no deal outcome is quite likely. However, if the aim up with all these things, is darkest before the dawn and if your borisjohnson darkest before the dawn and if your Boris Johnson and you darkest before the dawn and if your borisjohnson and you are trying to extra ct borisjohnson and you are trying to extract concessions from the other side in the last moment of negotiations, you want to hang tough and frankly they do not have many strong cards to play in this negotiation when the strongest they haveis negotiation when the strongest they have is us a look, verbally shut ourselves and one foot, economically with brexit, and we are prepared to shoot ourselves in the other foot and youre going to suffer as well. I and youre going to suffer as well. , not exactly a subtle negotiating position but you have to to acknowledge the fact that he strained to extract concessions from the eu by saying hes prepared to walk away from the table without a deal. The British Government has a very strong principle wanting the ability to manoeuvre and make policies easy without having to follow the eu as it moves in perpetuity, is there a way that the eu Single Market can be protected while uk government deviates . Eu Single Market can be protected while uk government deviates7m there is a way, they have not found it yet in the way you presented, it really goes to the heart of five this is so difficult. Theres been lots of fairly complicated avenues and alleyways around the question of alignment and non regression and how you relate to each other standards and what room for manoeuvre you might have but ultimately this is a clash of philosophies, the uk under borisjohnson is insisting on very pure notions of sovereignty in its existing in a very pure notion of integrity in the Single Market its very ha rd integrity in the Single Market its very hard to reconcile in the eu a single, if you want to have fairly high level access to a Single Market thenit high level access to a Single Market then it can be no strings attached. There have to be certain standards of the follow and its that they have to sign up legally to the whole eu rule book, but we have a strict rule of following the same standards as we go forward so that neither side can get an unfair advantage and finessing that has been so incredibly difficult and it may well be that some of the nuances of this may be lost on the brexiteers who borisjohnson may be lost on the brexiteers who Boris Johnson depends on for his political future and we are in that very difficult space. Its not the classic negotiation and percentage share in the percentage there and people can live with the outcome, this is over fundamental ideas that at the moment seemed to be quite incompatible. George, the brexiteers say no deal is better than a bad deal. Do we know what it will look like now that they have published this contingency paper . The contingency paper is over what can be difficult situation in the no deal scenario. All tribute in the eu which is currently conducted tariff free will slowly be hit by tariffs and if youre a sheep farmer in wales, your products will be hit by a 40 tariff it is working a car factory, your cars will be hit by a 10 tariff and to have all this immediate economic effect, the government has not produced its own Economic Forecast for no deal scenario for a number of years now and for the obvious reason, we have reviewed a weakness of the British Government negotiation position economically, but we know from the governments of the the office and budget responsibility that no deal would wipe several percents of the gdp andi would wipe several percents of the gdp and i will be about £4 billion and have 300,000 extra people being unemployed next year and that is about the same as the size of the city of newcastle. So, when people see borisjohnson who appears to be smirking slightly about no deal with the australian deal, you have to wonder about how that will be seen by people face the possibility of their industries, theirjobs being under threat. And tony, what is happening in europe is european leaders meet . European leaders are on the second night of a two day summit and a lot of other things to think about, they have been discussing relations with turkey, they want to have a reset with the United States following the donald trump election defeat and looking towards joe trump election defeat and looking towardsjoe biden trump election defeat and looking towards joe biden presidency trump election defeat and looking towardsjoe biden presidency and theyve been talking about the pandemic, they have been talking about this very difficult row with poland and hungary over for the call the rule of law and conditionality with getting covid 19 recovery funded money and ending in agreement on that brexit to some degree is a bit of a sideshow tonight and briefing leaders and dinner on Boris Johnson last night and have a lot of things to worry about when it comes to brexit, theyre all a big gloomy that there is simply no new initiatives on the table and no new ideas that the two negotiators connection to work with between now and sunday. Thank you so much for joining us for that analysis of the very latest on brexit. For those watching on bbc world news well be right back. Tens of thousands of secondary schoolchildren in the south east of england will be tested for coronavirus after a sharp rise in cases in parts of london, kent and essex. The Health Secretary explained the decision at a briefing in downing street. The testing results and survey shows the by far the fastest rises among secondary School Age Children 11 to 18 years old in one the rate among adults in london is probably flat, but we know from experience that a sharp rise in cases in younger people can lead to a rise in more vulnerable age groups later. We have seen vulnerable age groups later. We have seen that happen before. So, we need to do everything we can to stop the spread among School Age Children in london right now. We must not wait until the review which takes place on the 16th of december. We need to ta ke on the 16th of december. We need to take targeted action immediately. The Health Secretary for england matt hancock. In the mind of President Trump, the election aint over. And this is the big one, he says. Mr trumps referring to the latest legal challenge to the election republican attorneys general in 17 states have signed up to a far fetched lawsuit filed by the Texas Attorney general, asking the Supreme Court to delay certification of president ial electors in four battleground states that mr trump lost. 12 of those ags joined the president at the white house today. It is hard to find a legal expert who will tell you this case has any merit whatsoever. It has been dubbed the hail mary of legal challenges. But the very fact 17 attorneys general would sign up to such a lawsuit, built purely on conjecture, tells you so much about the current state of affairs. The more serious question, is what damage all this is doing to us democracy. Lets bring in, ari berman, Senior Reporter at motherjones and author of the book give us the ballot the modern struggle for Voting Rights in america. Lovely to have you with us. Putting it up on the screen, one of the opening lines the petition that he has filed it to the Supreme Court and he says. Setting aside the fa ct and he says. Setting aside the fact that he is stoking this division, if you would, but he is talking about in terms of history. What happened in 1860 . You may remember that we fought a civil war in 1860 and remember that we fought a civil war in1860 and so, remember that we fought a civil war in 1860 and so, with the president is doing is very dangerous, both practically and rhetorically. He seems to be willing to stoke another civil war on his way out the door and millions and millions of americans who voted for him now believe things that are patently untrue and they believe the election was stolen and wrecked even though there is no evidence that it was in so there is no evidence that it was in so many of the Republican Party have either actively gone along with this 01 either actively gone along with this or have said nothing and that its really the disturbing thing that one entire party has been completely complicit with the president is trying to do here and that damage is going to last long after he leaves office. The senator in texas, says he doesnt understand the legal case is and there are others who have been equally derisory of what he is said. We have not heard from Mitch Mcconnell of the House Minority leader and the bizarre thing for me about this is that republicans have argued for many years about the independence of states and their elections. They dont want federal decided elections, and they say they could dictate the Election Results and for states. That is what makes a selection so bizarre. States are not supposed to object to election procedures and other states. Texas is supposed to be before the Supreme Court when it is defending its own laws. So, you can imagine the reaction of texas of california was to file suit and say we want to throw out the elections in texas because of widespread voter suppression. The right would go crazy in this country. So, there is no basis in fact for this lawsuit, it deviates for all the positions of state rights and individual liberties that this was to stand for, it is really not a legal cases is more of a pr case, its more of a political statement by the Republican Party by President Trump about where they stand and trying to lay a marker down that the election was stolen and we need to do something about it. That is really the troubling part of it because thatis the troubling part of it because that is the thing that is very hard to contain. Now, you have tens of millions of americans that believe the election was stolen and they are resorting to extreme means beyond the courts, they are protesting outside of Election Officials homes, they are issuing death threats, it is getting very scary here and it is not something that you can quote easily once it is over. You think youre going to see early voting in melon voting in 2024. Male and. It is now its very odd that they are so up in arms because yes, donald trump one the us senate, but also the house of representatives. They held control of everything near swing state, those will be good for the house republicans, maybe this actually say that mel voting was not, early voting was not that bad instead, they seemed determined to restrict early voting and we are already here with ted to make hearing states talking about this. Well be think is going to happen is after all of these lies about the rigged election, republicans are going to double down on voter suppression, and making it easier to vote actually helped their party in many states. Thank you so much for joining us. It has been quite the yearin joining us. It has been quite the year in washington. 0ur politics filled with discordant tones. But it is christmas and thankfully there is at least at least one, who is playing a more melodius tune on capitol hill. He is the is gop senator lamar alexander, playing his chistmas recital in the rotunda of the Russel Senate building. But this will be one of the last times he plays, as the tennessee senator is retiring this year. Hello there. Sunshine was in pretty short supply during today. Most of us got stuck with a lot of cloud. This was how it looked earlier on in abersoch in west wales, a fairly typical scene, i have to say. There was a little bit of brightness. That was the north east of scotland before the end of the day. But on the satellite picture, you can see extensive cloud and plenty more where that came from. And actually, this developing stripe of cloud here has been bringing some rain into western areas, and that rain will continue to push its way eastwards through the evening and overnight. Some of that rain will be pretty heavy. Behind it, still a lot of cloud, some clear spells, but also some heavy showers. These could even contain the odd rumble of thunder across parts of wales and south west england. Not a cold night, certainly not for the time of year, with lows of between 4 9 degrees. So, tomorrow morning, well start off with this band of rain across eastern areas. Across eastern england, the rain should tend to move away, but i think itll stay across the eastern side of scotland. Some quite persistent wet weather here with the risk of some disruption. Further west, again, a lot of cloud, but some brighter spells, some sunshine here and there, equally the chance of some heavy showers. Temperatures between 7 11 degrees. Now, as we head into the start of the weekend, this is when we might get to see a proper slice of sunshine. High pressure just trying to build its way in, a very temporary ridge of High Pressure, but it will bring with it a zone of brighter weather. So after a cloudy and damp start, we should see sunshine working in from the west. I think there will still be some showers around at times. Those temperatures still in the range between 8 11 degrees. But into the second half of the weekend, well, things are going to cloud over once again because low pressure will be approaching from the west. This frontal system will bring some pretty heavy bursts of rain. Its going to be quite windy, but that windll be coming up from the south, so thats a mild wind direction, a wedge of mild air working its way across many parts of the country. But with a lot of cloud, with some outbreaks of rain, some of that rain will be heavy, maybe cold enough for some snow mixing in over the very highest hills of scotland. Those are the average wind speeds we can expect. Gusts will be stronger than that, particularly in exposed spots, but with those winds coming from the south, it will be mild. Temperatures as high as 13 degrees. Youre watching bbc news with me Laura Trevelyan in new york, Christian Fraser is in london. Our top stories Kim Kardashian and others join the calls for clemency for Brandon Bernard. Hes due to be excuted on thursday, the first of five before the end of Donald Trumps presidency. Facebook faces its biggest legal action in years as regulators and prosecutors from across the us join forces to accuse the social media giant of crushing competition. Also in the programme the pandemic devastated holiday travel, but that hasnt stopped airbnb reporting a wildly successful first day listing, valuing the company at over 100 billion dollars. Well hear from the firms ceo. Plus , holiday movies are booming business more than 80 new ones are out this christmas but why do we fall for the formula every time . Kim kardashian west has become a force in us criminaljustice reform. She has successfully lobbied President Trump, spent time on the phone with governors and legislators and paid legal bills for people trying to get out of prison. And now, shes involved in an Eleventh Hour plea to stop a federal execution. A terrible case has been brought to my attention and i need your help. Without it, on december 12th Brandon Bernard is going to be executed for a crime he participated in as a teenager. Mr bernard is due to become the ninth person to be executed by the federal government in the last five months. And the Trump Administration wants to schedule four other exections before joe bidens inauguration. Heres leboo diseko. For the last 20 years, Brandon Bernard has been on death row. On wednesday his lawyers were u nsuccessful wednesday his lawyers were unsuccessful in a last ditch appeal to stop his execution. It means tonight he could become the first of five federal prisoners to be executed during the president ial transition. If i could ever go back in time and i would definitely change a bunch of different scenarios. Donald trump will have overseen the deaths of 13 federal inmates when he leaves office at the end of january. More inmates when he leaves office at the end ofjanuary. More than any president in over a century. The federal Death Penalty was reinstated in 1998 the executions were rare. Just three had taken place since then and none since 2003. Injuly they Trump Administration resumed they Trump Administration resumed the practice after a 17 year hiatus. Brandon bernards the practice after a 17 year hiatus. Brandon berna rds case the practice after a 17 year hiatus. Brandon bernards case has attracted the support of celebrities like Kim Kardashian west. The reality star and Prison Reform activist has called on her followers to treat donald trump to save mr bernard. Tomorrow another federal execution is scheduled at the same penitentiary in indiana. These executions come just weeks before joe biden takes office. And he has said that he will seek to and the Death Penalty. The incumbent president would usually defer to his successor and that the president elect set the course but Donald Trumpby the attorney general says he is just following the law. He said he owes it to be victims and theirfamilies to he said he owes it to be victims and their families to Carry Forward the sentence. Were joined now by former federal prosecutor mariam krinski she is now the executive director of fair and just prosecution. Thank you forjoining us. Why is the Trump Administration made federal executions a parity . They are really just following the law as the attorney general claims . just following the law as the attorney general claims . I think any attorney general claims . I think any attorney general claims . I think any attorney general and any president has complete discretion to decide whether they want to offer clemency, whether they want to offer clemency, whether they want to offer clemency, whether they want to abide by the growing standard in our nation to move away from this law and deeply troubling process of people being put to death. Whether the want to join the west rest of western democracy where the us stands alone in being willing to put people to death or if theyre going to abide bya death or if theyre going to abide by a process that we know how deeply racist and racially disproportionate impacts, has constitutional concerns, and makes mistakes. We know that over 170 people over the past year have been determined to be innocent while waiting on death row for that execution date to come about. So i think whether or not this president decides to honour the pleas of the many in the community, individuals with great renown and nearly 100 criminaljustice leaders who are asking to show mercy and show that we are better than this or whether he wants the waning days of his administration to be defined by face and moving forward with this unconstitutional in the eyes of many process of death is a Division Decision on he will be able to make. Arent most states moving away from the Death Penalty even as the federal government embraces it . They are, and that is the growing trend. Its the growing trend in the world, there are only 20 nations that still invoke a Death Penalty. It is growing trend among members of our community. More and more individuals are making clear that for a variety of Different Reasons they no longer embrace this notion that who we are should be defined by allowing a government and country to execute fellow members of our community. And thatis fellow members of our community. And that is not to say that people should not be held accountable and its not to say that they should be returned to the community. If they still pose a danger, but to accept the view that an individual who committed a crime at the age of 18, today, in the midst of a pandemic, in the midst of a moment in our nation when they are called by millions on the street for dealing with systemic racism in the wave of an administration at a time when trust in government at an all time low, say that we should move forward i think is quite a bit more about this president than it does about the individuals who committed this very serious offence. I am looking at some breaking news here relating to this story. Brandon bernard who is on death row, there is a line here that Alan Dershowitz, the lawyer, has joined here that Alan Dershowitz, the lawyer, hasjoined bernards defence team. This is according to the law firm and apparently they had just filed an emergency stay of execution with the Supreme Court. Is that a new motion with the Supreme Court or is adding partially signing onto it and what does it matter that someone of his profile is now on the case . think the more prominent places chiming in, the better, setting the Alan Dershowitz is a highly regarded and well known advocate. I think we have to remember that even though those who have seen this case close up those who have seen this case close up and were part of believing at that moment when the sentence was handed down that it was the right one, has since thats about it. Five of the nine remaining jurors will made clear they no longer believe thatis made clear they no longer believe that is the right orjust result. One of the prosecutors in that case has made clear that she no longer believes this is an appropriate result and many voices, law enforcement, current and former prosecutors, former us attorneys, high up in the department ofjustice have chimed in and made clear that by moving forward with Something Like this especially in this moment that we sit here right now, we are eroding trust in our community and within our community no longer has faith in the integrity of our justice system, all of us are at risk. We are not a Safer Community when we cannot have faith in our system of law and in our system of justice. So i think the growing chorus of voices speaking out and pleading with both the president and the courts to step in here is insignificant. Thank you forjoining us. In a Political Climate as polarised as the one here in washington theres not much republicans and democrats can agree on. But both parties say its time to look closer at big tech. Federal regulators and prosecutors from 45 red and blue states have joined forces to sue facebook accusing the social media giant of illegally buying up rivals and stifling free market competition. Its an unprecedented legal challenge to the company which also owns instagram and whatsapp. Lets speak to lauren hirsch, dealbook reporter with the new york times. The interesting thing here is that the regulators and the competition watchdogs signed off on the acquisition of whatsapp and instagram and now are walking it back most of it is illegal to do that . It is legal and its very unprecedented and very rare and certainly that facebook is going to drill into. The reason why we are in this situation is when they signed off on those deals under then president obama, the world was very different. No one really understood the value of technology and the value of data and so people saw these deals im a kind of said photo apps. These deals im a kind of said photo apps, sure, go ahead. Theirworld has many teams and people have questions whether or not the current laws work with Technology Companies that we have and there has been a lot of anger towards and basically said you are allowed these companies to get big and become too big and the aspca is trying, they would not face it like this but some might say eventually right is wrong. They are not saying all we are sorry, thats a little bit what the message is. We now better understand the application of those deals and be wa nt application of those deals and be want facebook to unwind them. dont use facebook a lot but i do know that instagram is an integral pa rt know that instagram is an integral part of it these days. How easy would it be to separate the two companies . Not easy. A facebook it will make it less easy. Part of the defence will be i cannot believe youre asking me to unwind this deal but its typically not asks because its an onerous thing to do because its an onerous thing to do because it integrates people and integrate technology and facebook is going to argue that its really hard to unwind that self its very important from a business point of view they generate a significant amount of advertising revenue. Its important for my eyeball point of view they have about a billion users and facebook is going to make it as integral as they came from an operational point of view to have its argument that it is so hard to unwind as the ftc wants them to do. 11 years ago i got to interview Mark Zuckerberg, then not nearly as rich and famous as now and here is what he told me about how he will protect peoples privacy. So who is going to on the Facebook Content . The person who put that there are you . The person who is putting the content on facebook owns the information and thats why this is an important thing and why facebook is a special service that people feel ownership over. This is their information and be on it. They own it. Over. This is their information and be on it. They own it. Is that why Public Officials are so fed up with Mark Zuckerberg because they feel he has been misleading about what facebook really do with peoples data and let that they do indeed send it in some way . There is growing anger towards facebook from both sides of the island both sides have their reasons, democrats are excellent upset over that 2016 election was handled and republicans get frustrated around issues of censorship though they tend to focus on twitter with that. It is on facebook. So there is anger rising and rising and rising in dc towards facebook and privacy is not directly a trust issue, you can make the argument that it is because of companies have less power than they do not have the ability to demand your data, they give up something by way of privacy protections. So this is not technically a privacy case but the anger around data and Data Protection and privacy has driven, i make even say the vitriol against facebook that contributed very likely to where we are today with a huge suit from the stc ftc and more than 40 states. Thank you for joining us. The restrictions in place to deal with the pandemic have of course devastated the travel and hospitality industry. So it might be surprising that the home sharing platform airbnb has chosen this period to float the company on the stock market. But it has. And not only that, investors have been rushing to buy shares in the company. Michelle fleury has been talking to the companys ceo and joins us now. It isa it is a good point. Their workforce has been decimated by this pandemic. Yet here they are enticing investors and telling them that they are going to be hugely profitable. Well baby when they recover . They think they will be sent to me that with the message from the ceo. When this pandemic started, you are right, people thought that the travel industry was going to be in huge trouble. A company that came to a company that came to define not only by sharing economy but that travel business because it lets homeowners rent out a room by their apartment 01 rent out a room by their apartment or house. And so when we saw travel hospitality like so much of our lives there was an assumption that air bmb was ineligible as you mentioned. They had to cut cost very quickly, 25 of their workforce in fa ct quickly, 25 of their workforce in fact they got rid of and they had to raise my money and go into my back. And yet, what was surprising according to the ceo is how quickly air b b has been able to recover. According to the ceo is how quickly air b8b has been able to recover. felt like i was a captain of a ship and we got hit by a torpedo. As we put our ipo on hold and we were not anticipating going public but then something happened. People thought the child people who were stuck in their homes started getting in theircars and in their homes started getting in their cars and they wanted to go to small towns and communities and find a home and stay in and demand basically meant that our business started rebounding and at that point we thought this might be a good time to go public because we were already prepared to go before and we really just wanted to be able to allow my people to become shareholders. They share price is not off to a rocketing start. It is double especially in trading. What we have seen especially in trading. What we have seen is the company has been able to resca n seen is the company has been able to rescan a half billion dollars. They are rescan a half billion dollars. They a re clearly rescan a half billion dollars. They are clearly along with investors betting that the future is bright and that advancing vaccines are on the horizon we will safely begin to be able to travel again. Wall street might be feeling good but out there in the real economy, Many Americans are suffering from job losses am i from coronavirus restriction on the Service Sector economy, how are those talks going in washington to try and help americans out as the holidays loom . We seem to be going one step forward, two steps back. We get word that progress is being made and then we learned that things are still stalling. This Sticking Point has not really changed. On the democratic side view of god Chuck Schumer basically saying you have to have for the state and local governments, the republicans continued to say that is a nonsta rter continued to say that is a nonstarter and so you have got this impasse and be backed up to all of this if it will show a rice picture and the monthly job this if it will show a rice picture and the monthlyjob is to do things are deteriorating and yet that millions of americans are struggling. We are looking at a jobless level, comparable to the west of the Great Recession in 2008 and unemployment benefits, infection addiction moratoriums are set to expire at the end of the year. So the situation is getting worse and increasingly dire for people during the holiday and in the meantime the talks go on and on. Thank you for that analysis. Stay with us, still to come. Stay with us on bbc news, still to come and over 80 festive films are set to be released this Christmas Season what makes a good one . Well discuss. Greater Manchester Police has been accused of letting down vulnerable victims by failing to record more than eighty thousand crimes in a year thats one in five of the total reported. The Police Inspectorate said it was also deeply troubled that some cases were being closed without a proper investigation. Greater Manchester Police says its addressing the concerns. Our Home Affairs Correspondent tom symonds, has more a lot of these cases relate to Domestic Bank violence and stalking and harassment and these are cases that can be unclear whether an allegation has been made an allegation can be withdrawn by the beginning the case. What the inspector says is the police in Greater Manchester have not been doing a good at tracking that, recording when crime allegations are being withdrawn and when they stop investigating as a result. But there isa investigating as a result. But there is a problem and the inspector who has led this said its almost as though greater Manchester Police is flying blind. If you do not know what your crime hotspots are, weighted are turning out and if you dont know where most of your repeat offenders are because you have got such an incomplete view of crime in your area then you are not going to be able to take preventative action. Its like trying to fly a plane with most of the instruments covered up. Its not going to work. I am sure the public of manchester will understand that if there is not a com plete understand that if there is not a complete picture of crime in their area and they are not be are perfect being served by their police force. Greater Manchester Police said they started to address this in a long term plan. Building a centralised unit to handle the reporting of crime. There is a new computer system. That work started early this year but as it started to pandemic started. Greater Manchester Police say that has made it harder to recruit and train staff. You are watching bbc news. Todays the first night of hannukah and christmas is right around the corner too. The holidays are well and truly here so its time to watch a classic movie with a box of chocolates and a festive drinky to. Whether its a wonderful life, meet me in st louis, elf of love actually a classic christmas film can be watched and rewatched year after year. Thats what its all about. But this year more than ever before youre going to be able to discover a new favourite because there are 82 new holiday films being released this year. And 40 of those are being released on the Us Television channel hallmark. If you think thats too many . Think again. The channels countdown to Christmas Season, which started on october the 24th yes i kid you not has been a ratings success its the number1 Cable Network in the country every christmas, with millions tuning in for the good cheer. Paul campbell has starred in many hallmark festive films including holiday hearts and this year hes the lead in christmas by starlight well talk to him in a moment but first heres a clip. Starlight, starbright. Iwould not work for you for 1 million. Can these to get christmas right . You said casual. I meant nice casual nuts bingo night at the region. Christmas by starlight on Hallmark Channel. Feel good already. Paul joins us now from vancouver. I am feeling much better. You are the king of christmas. I think they are pushing to change the name of the network to Hallmark Channel. That is my fifth Christmas Movie for that network in many years. What makes a good Christmas Movie . It depends on who you are asking but for the Hallmark Channel i think what theyre aiming for with every pound and they do have a formula for making films is they want these iconic christmas images, they want the snow and the trees and the life and the music i may try to include as much of that and every movie as possible. Of course everybody like a happy ending so. When you are sitting down as the scriptwriter you have to think i need somewhere where they are setting Christmas Trees, i need a hotel thats looking pretty christmasy, they have but to be in central park, is that how it works . Is there a list . I dont know if there is a checklist but yes, there are certain things. Production design is beyond the writer is controlled Production Design are what they can go all you are in a trash room of a building that still Christmas Trees in there. It does not matter where you are they looking to lights and tinsel and you can be in a cave and say thats a Christmas Tree . We call it vomiting christmas. He will vomit christmas all over the movie. Every chance they got. It seems like we are literally vomiting Christmas Movies this year with 82 of them. Can you ever have to many Christmas Movies . Iam going ever have to many Christmas Movies . I am going to be killed for using that phrase. Vomiting christmas. I may never work again. Can you have too many . I think america would say no, you cannot. This is probably the fourth year that hallmark has done 40. Ithink fourth year that hallmark has done 40. I think the other networks combined perhaps one other big rival that shall not be named, i think they might have done five or ten last year. This year they probably did 20. And netflix is trying to get into the game. Everybody is trying to make these movies because theres an appetite. Theres a reason that every single and new christmas premiere is number one in table in the us as people want to watch them. Do actors and actresses, did they wa nt to do actors and actresses, did they want to be in a Christmas Movie . Is it like musicians who want to have a christmas number one . Is it the time to be in the cinema . I think so. I think particularly this year with whats been happening in the us and in politics there is so much tension and making people are realising its s0 and making people are realising its so much more fun to tell light hearted and enjoyable feel good stories and it is to tell stories with violence and murder. It seems the whiter these Networks Open territories that are more people line up to get in these movies. There is no end in sight and the bigger the appetite it does not matter if it feels like we have seen the starry 100 times, people love that story and they want to rewatch it over and over. Thank you so much. Love actually, best or worst Christmas Movie in the world . Pretty good. It is on the list this year. There is as leather brought us multiple shades of grey. A lot of cloud across many parts of the uk. Some beautiful pictures from weather watchers. This one from the north of scotla nd watchers. This one from the north of scotland and here in the southwest of england just a little bit of blue sky shelling between the clouds. That cloud has been extensive as you can see from our image and there is plenty more whether. A lot of cloud waiting in the atlantic heading in oui waiting in the atlantic heading in our direction. No pressure in charge friday. One frontal system drifting its way east. That will bring outbreaks of rain to start the day across it in parts of england at least in scotland. Much of the Rainbow Peter out and it will be persistent across east in scotland and could cause one or two problems. A lot of cloud and some glimmers of brightness and sunny spell. Some hefty showers as well. Temperature is where we would expect them to be at this time of year. Seven through 11 degrees. Friday night a lot of cloud with rain and turning heavier and western areas. Temperature is holding underneath that blanket of cloud but some clear skies coming into the west. Because we have got a little range of High Pressure that is going to try to build its way in from the start of the weekend. It will only be a temporary feature but it promises to bring some bright leather for most of us. A cloudy start but going on eastward and be some changes in marriage with one or two showers and temperature is around eight to 11 degrees. Saturday into sunday things will cloud over once again as the low pressure approaches and defined to assist in bringing outbreaks of rain. Brisk wind as well and coming up from the south race mild air moving across the country. Coming up from the south with mild air. Cloud and rain and some snow with the very highest ground in scotland. It will be wimpy. Those are the average wind speeds. Gusts will be stronger than that in exposed areas. It will be mild down towards the southwest. 12 01 mild down towards the southwest. 12 or 13 degrees further north and east. Highs of eight or nine. Frontal system responsible for that weather will clear by the time you get to monday. The big area of low pressure will be in charge. That will feed plenty of showers in our direction. Some will be happy. Really focusing across western coast we are exposed to the wind with shelter further east. It might be drier and mild on monday. Ten through 13 degrees. A similar day on tuesday as well and maybe stay to try to pin details of where the wet weather will be. It will be dry and potentially bright spells in between the rain. Temperatures are down at the rain. Temperatures are down at the stage eight through 11 degrees. The jet stream or beheading across the atlantic in our direction but its not moving in a straight line. Instead it has got wiggles on it and where we get these dips in the jet stream. That is where we could spin up stream. That is where we could spin up some small but potentially deep areas of low pressure. They are likely to be small leather feature is that it is hard to pinpoint exactly where the wet weather will be. They will be dry gaps in between but by the end of the week it could be the big low with general wet and windy weather. There will be read at times with bright spells but i think still plenty of shades of grey. 00 58 43,171 4294966103 13 29,430 goodbye for now
