British scientific achievement. And distributed. It is a game changerfor britain and distributed. It is a game changer for britain and the world. And see you later, alligator, the pooch snatched from the shore and saved by his plucky owner. Im Christian Fraser in london. Joe biden will not be deterred by present drummers increasingly desperate attempts to for the transition of power. Today he unveiled some of his top names in cabinet. Deterred by President Trumps increasingly desperate. He is approaching this, said one, like an experienced mechanic intent on repairing a machine. The name we will all come to know is the new secretary of state who served previously in the Obama Administration, so he is a known quantity in washington and further afield. The other big announcement is his previous boss and former president ial candidatejohn is his previous boss and former president ial candidate john kerry will be installed as the new climate staff. It tells where the Climate Crisis fits in with joe staff. It tells where the Climate Crisis fits in withjoe bidens priorities. I am tony from the state department. Us is resenting a new diplomatic base to the world. Someone with a lighter touch, ready to refrain americas relationship with the international community. The un sensible united nations, where countries from all over the world come together. It is a great pleasure to welcome you all here today. Is a safe pair of hands as a top diplomat. He has advised biden for 20 years. He is so close to the president elect, he has been described as an alter ego, a virtual mind meld. This veteran Foreign Policy hand would be returning to familiarground. He policy hand would be returning to familiar ground. He began his career at the white house during the Clinton Administration and was a key figure on barack 0bamas National Security and diplomatic team. The United States has conducted an operation that killed 0sama bin laden. He was at the table for all of the important meetings. After four turbulent years of Donald TrumpsAmerica First,. Walk can united do to help put the world back on its axis . For the Vice President , it comes down to three things. Leadership, cooperation, democracy. Which, i think, leadership, cooperation, democracy. Which, ithink, also leadership, cooperation, democracy. Which, i think, also sums up the profound differences between President Trump and Vice President biden. Is priority will be to re establish the us as a trusted ally. To rejoin International Agreements such as the Paris Climate Accord and the world health organization. He will be reunited with overseas and members of the obama Biden Administration. Jake sullivan as National Security adviser, he helped open the back channel with iran that led to the nuclear agreement. And the former secretary of state john nuclear agreement. And the former secretary of Statejohn Kerry nuclear agreement. And the former secretary of state john kerry as special envoy for climate. He brings stature and vast experience to the new role, but may not excite young climate activists that voted for biden. There is also the un ambassador, a long serving career diplomat that was sidelined by the Trump Administration. With this team on International Leaders know they are getting. Stability and familiarity. But both america and the world have changed in the last four years and has a lot of catching up four years and has a lot of catching up to do. How will this impact relations between the uk and usa . Gardner is the former us and battered to the eu. Good to have you with us. Someone said if you want to knowjoe biden, you have to get to knowjoe biden, you have to get to know the two tonys. You can retailers he is the why he you can probably tell us why he is the best choice. I worked for him in the Clinton White house and the Obama Administration. He is a safe pair of hands in difficult moments, including when we had to responses respond to the russian invasion of crimea in ukraine and nobody has a bad word to say about him. Not only is he professional, he has the people skills, which is desperately needed right now to rebuild a state thatis needed right now to rebuild a state that is demoralised. There is an orthodoxy to the democrats multi Foreign Policy, of which he is a foreign apart. Of the world is a very different place to the one it was when he left the white house. How will he adapt . That is right. I do not think this will be a obama 3. 0 administration. Trump will not pull away quietly. We have seen that. Trump has not been defeated. Plus, the pressure of time is on everyones shoulders right now. I think this administration will have to think on ruthlessly what can be done ruthlessly, pragmatically, relatively in some cases, and co ntroversially. Relatively in some cases, and controversially. For example, on trade, to cite one example, we will not return to the old days of extremely ambitious trade agreements. We must focus on what is meaningful and what can be done. And also what shows the advantage of working with allies, multinational institutions. Unilaterally, and surely advantage of this to the people. Do think us allies could be weary knowing that, 2024, it could be America First all over again . There are no guarantees. It is possible, which is why we will have to seize the day. This is serious. Even european allies will have to ask themselves the question, not of what gifts they can get to america, that does not happen, but what they can do to ensure that the most next the next four years of success. If you have to go far, you have to go together. Trump for the way to go was fast and long and on china, for example, he said we do not need your oi example, he said we do not need your or our allies. We will have to think together. We have to prove the case together. We have to prove the case to our respective peoples, because populism is not an invention of the United States. We have to prove the case that working together is the best solution. Do you worry that the current political row here about whether the us election was stolen will undermine the ability of the Biden Administration to promote democracy abroad . We will have to go about this with great humility. You are right, human rights good governance, anti corru ption are right, human rights good governance, Anti Corruption or going to be at the heart of this administration for good reason. But we must do it in a different way, because in the last four years we have not exactly been a great model for the world and most democracies. The victory of President Biden is also baggies for demagogy and populism around the world. As principles of democracy that were at risk during the Trump Administration will be very much at the forefront of this new administration. But we must do it with humility. When you talk about humility, and the challenges of pushing a multilateral agenda, i want to play you a clip that tony blinken gave when asked about brexit. This is not the dog caught the car. This is the car going into reverse over the dog. It isa going into reverse over the dog. It is a total mess. There are some who tip you as perhaps as a future ambassador here in london and you are in tuscany at the moment, but live in london. I will not ask you to confirm that. Whoever is the next ambassador, the message on brexit will have to be more nuanced than that, willis not . First of all, that was a silly newspaper article that has no basis in fact. Brexit is water under the bridge. I was involved during the last weeks and months of the Obama Administration look looking at the consequences of brexit. That does not matter. It is happening, it was a decision by a democratic government, and ally, and that deserves respect. Nobody wants to. What is different is the emphasis. The Incoming Administration will see the triangular relationship between the eu, United States and uk. All three must work well. We want to see the uk thrive, but what is different is we see the eu, even short of an effective member, it will be a vital partner with the knighted states. That is what is different. With the United States. We did not talk aboutjohn kerry, which is a really interesting appointment, isnt it . He will be sitting in the National Security agency as the president s on boy on climate change. As a sign of how on voice. Envoy. This car manufacturer has abandoned its legal effort. The winds are shifting so legal effort. The winds are shifting so quickly. He doesnt need to be confirmed. Is that because it is a new position . It is not one that needs to go through the senate. He would be a little bit controversial because of his role in negotiating the iran nuclear deal. He gets in via the back door. Useful experience. Frankensteins monster, thatis experience. Frankensteins monster, that is how a judge in pennsylvania described the trumpadministrations claim and called it without merit and any evidence at all. The 36 lawsuits present trump and the republicans cross over states over states, only 24 24 have already been denied, dismissed or settled out of court. Why is the gsa chief still prevaricating 20 days on from the election quiz chief still prevaricating 20 days on from the election quinoe biden says there is no excuse. The law says there is no excuse. The law says that the General Service administration has a person who recognises who the winner is and then they have to have access to all then they have to have access to all the data and information the government possesses to be prepared. It does not require there to be an absolute winner. It says the apparent winner. Dave barron was the former head of the gsa under present bill clinton andy in charge at the time of the disputed election in 2000, when few votes separated al gore and george bush. Thank you for being with us. Could emily murphy herself authorised the transition without the permission of President Trump . Sure. She should not need the omission. When i was in that situation into thousand, i did not get a single bit of pressure from the chief of staff or president. They both knew me and knew that my role was to make the ascertainment or not of the apparent winner and they were not supposed to interfere and they did not. I do not know if she is receiving pressure from the white house. I do not know why she has not made the decision yet. Have you been in touch with emily murphy yourself . Can you offer any advice . We talked around the election because she was beginning to imagine that she might face what i faced in 2000. She wanted to know what had happened and i share that with her. Ireminded herthe happened and i share that with her. I reminded herthe most important thing was that it was a old man telling a young person and the best thing would be to do the right thing. I have since sent her a couple of e mails and she responded once. There has not been a lot of communication and she has not given me any signals of what she is going to do, but i think it is time, well past times. I think she knows that and knows it from me. Dave, you said you had spoken about the situation in the year 2000, but they are very different circumstances. Absolutely. There was one state, 537 votes, both al gore and george bush agreed that was the issue of whoever had won the state of florida winning the election. So when it was not decided until the Supreme Court decided on december13, ithink until the Supreme Court decided on december 13, i think it was, then al gore immediately conceded. And Something Else pretty interesting, i think, the ap, which i consider the Gold Standard of those who call elections, had not called the elections, had not called the election until then, and they did. Ap now, and all kinds of all of the media outlets, im pretty sure, have called it forjoe biden. They did it a week and a few days ago. It is time. Seems extraordinary to me and many others in this country that one senior Civil Servant could hold up the whole job. Do you think of the back of this there needs to be some reform of the system . back of this there needs to be some reform of the system . I do not know. Lets make sure we understand what happens. The gsa has a terrific role in the government providing services to other government agencies. Products, to paper, two tools, they help agencies do their own procurement, provide Building Space and we sit to them. But every four years, they have a role to play in the transmission. Transition. So far they have been preparing. They also have money that congress has appropriated, so somebody has to decide when to give that money and to whom. The law was pretty simple. It said, the transition act of 1963, the administrator would ascertain the administrator would ascertain the apparent winner, give that money and space. I think there is no guidance in that more, it has been amended a couple of times, but i dont think there is any need for any more than just that dont think there is any need for any more thanjust that more. Just the administrator needs to ascertain. So it is time for her to do that. Thank you for coming on the programme. They are in the competitive midwest. Yes, although he has not said joe biden has won, he says it seems likely and he is calling on the president to authorise that transition. We will see. For those watching on bbc world news well be right back. The government has confirmed that england will return to a three tiered system of regional measures when the current lockdown ends on the 2nd of december. Our deputy Political Editor vicki young reports. There is real optimism in the government, of course, about the vaccination, the roll of mass testing. But they are trying to be cautious as well. They do not want people to get carried away. A lot of that press conference seemed like an appeal to people to please be sensible, and even if they do manage to lift these restrictions over the Christmas Period for a few days, the message there is, just do not go too far. Actually, it will really depend on the next few weeks and the run up to christmas and then also, after that, all the way through to easter. If people follow the rules, that will allow some loosening over christmas. But they are clearly concerned that by allowing people a little bit of room, they take too much and it sets back all of the work. The vaccines that protect us from chicken pox took more than 15 years to develop. There is plenty we have to learn about the new covid vaccines, but the fact theyve been created inside 10 months is truly remarkable. And not one vaccine, but three and it looks as though one vaccine could even be in use before christmas. Today the Oxford University astrazeneca trial reported their data so heres how it compares to the other two. Interim data suggests that on average it is 70 effective but the researchers say that it was closer to 90 effective when the initial dose was adjusted. That brings it broadly in line with the vaccines developed by pfizer and moderna. In each case we require 2 doses four weeks apart. Of course it is notjust how effective they are we also have to consider how they are stored and how they are distributed. The crucial thing regarding the astrazeneca vaccine is that it can be kept at a regular fridge temperature. Modernas vaccine needs to stay at 20 celcius and pfizers at 70 much more challenging. And the cost of freezing the vaccines is of course an issue in poorer less developed countries. That brings us to cost. The astrazeneca vaccine will cost around 4 per dose pfizers 20 dollars, modernas 35 dollars. A dose. Werejoined by dr anna blakney a Research Fellow in the department of Infectious Diseases at Imperial College london where shes working on another Coronavirus Vaccine. Similarto similar to that we have seen today. Yes, we are working on one that is more similar to the pfizer and moderna vaccines. Whenever we are making a vaccine, we are trying to train the immune system to recognise a certain protein from a virus. In this case the spike protein from the coronavirus. Rna is one way of getting the protein in the virus. We ta ke getting the protein in the virus. We take the code from the protein, put it in the cells and then rely on the cells to create the protein are encouraged you this vaccine use . Yes, really great news. We are really wary about whether it is going to work and what efficacy we will see. What is really encouraging we have vaccines that have good looking data coming out from the phase three clinical trials. Not many scientists are on tick tock, but lets take a look at your video that you have created about your work. Vaccines 95, what a way to make a living. You going to make that platform you have on tick tock to try and persuade people who might be concerned to take these vaccines . Yes, i try not to torture people by singing, but the point of our team and the things we have been doing is to scientists working on covid 19 vaccines with the general public. The goal here is to answer questions that people may have about safety or, are these vaccines being rushed . We can show them what we actually do in the lab and how we test vaccines and be there to answer their questions. I think its a great way to connect with the public. Questions. I think its a great way to connect with the publiclj questions. I think its a great way to connect with the public. I love dolly parton i look at the polling at the moment and americans, the number of those who have said they will get a vaccine has gone up, but 4296 will get a vaccine has gone up, but 42 of American Adults say they would not. I dont think it is a bad thing for people to be critical. This is what scientists are taught to do too. You are critical until you see the data and then make conclusions based on that data. Part of the problem is the general public may not have the same access to that data or the ability to interpret it. It is really important for scientists to be there and be available to answer their questions andl available to answer their questions and i think this reallyjust tends to promote trust in the whole process for everyone. We need to get that 70 , so lets hope so. Im sure the military in america will get it to the states, and they will distribute it probably within 24 hours of it being accepted by the fda, but then comes to the roll out and thejurisdiction, fda, but then comes to the roll out and the jurisdiction, really, fda, but then comes to the roll out and thejurisdiction, really, is down to counties, local authorities. Is the astrazeneca vaccine a bit of a game changer in that way because it is so easy to handle . Yes, absolutely club pros and cons to each of these vaccines as you mentioned earlier on about the dose and cost and storage of each one. If you can store it in a refrigerator or you can store it in a refrigerator ora you can store it in a refrigerator or a normal freezer, it makes it more accessible. But all of the companies are really working on the logistics of distributing these. So if you have to have dry eyes and how long you can store it for, i think they will make it work so that you can distribute them in a relatively streamlined manner. Dry ice. Thank you for coming on the programme and the look of your research. If you didnt already know, christian has a new puppy at home. I think maybe the children have been overtaken in your affections . But is he ready to risk life and limb to protect her . And just how far would he go . Would cristian dive into a pond to pull his puppy out of the mouth of an alligator . This guy in florida went in knee deep to rescue gunner who was almost a gonner until he managed to prise the alligators mouth open. And now gunner is no longer a gonner he is in good Health Thanks to crocodile dundee there he looks. You would do that for your puppy mine would not anywhere near the water would not get anywhere near the water. He is a couch potato no chance it would be cholesterol that kills my dog. Not an alligator. I guarantee it. Can i show you a picture . I think we have a picture. Lets see. Look. You see . And allergen an alligator will not get that looksjust like the andrex puppy. White stumpy legs, which is why i think she likes to sit on the sofa. She does not go near alligators. Almost making me feel like i want another puppy, but iam feel like i want another puppy, but i am loyal to my three year old labrador. Nothing will get in the way of loving alfie. Yes. The children have been supplanted, let me tell you. Hello. It may have been a fine but rather chilly end to the day in some eastern parts, but actually through the night its going to turn milder rather than get colder. And over the next 24 36 hours, milder conditions will dominate. Rain at times, particularly in the west, but later in the wek as things turn drier, more extensive frost and fog will return. At the moment, though, well, weve got some south to south westerly winds all to the south of this weather front, which is buckling, a little wave developing towards the south west, and that means rather than the weather front shifting its way southwards and eastwards, the rainjust runs along it northwards and eastwards. And so, its the same areas affected by the rain throughout the night, parts of northern ireland, south west scotland especially. Something a little bit clearer tonight in the far north of scotland, where temperatures will drop back into single figures. But as the breeze picks up across england and wales, plenty of cloud, the odd splash of drizzle in the west. Itll actually turn milder through the night, with most in double figures to start tuesday morning. And heres a big chart for tuesday, very with little change to how we are at the moment. That weather front still there waving across the north west of the uk, so northern ireland, south and west scotland, still more rain to come. Occasional rain to the west of wales, maybe north west england, too. Far north of scotland will be that little bit brighter than today and a little bit cooler, but elsewhere, with the winds coming in from a southerly direction and a breezier day for england and wales, it will be a warmer day. Temperatures could hit around 13 14 degrees, especially if we see more in the way of sunshine develop towards east anglia and the south east later. But as we finish tuesday and go into tuesday night, that weather front will start to push its way southwards and eastwards. Another wave, another buckle develops downwind of us, and that will delay its departure from the south and east. So milder air will hold on here for a bit longer, but notice our temporary blast of northerly winds will bring colder air in place, and then that will just sit for the rest of the week. Wednesdays almost transition day, really. That weather fronts still with us across the south and east of england. Rain and drizzle at times, maybe the odd heavier burst. From the north and west midlands, wales northwards, a lot more sunshine around than how we started the week. There will be a bit of a northerly breeze bringing that colder air in places. Temperatures down to single figures and one or two showers. And then with colder air pushing to all through the night and into thursday morning, a more widespread frost around. And frosty nights youll have to get used to as we see the week out. Most places will be dry by day, but could become quite murky. And where the fog lingers, temperatures only around 3 4 degrees, but as you can see, most will be sitting in single figure temperatures. Youre watching bbc news. With me Laura Trevelyan in washington, Christian Fraser is in london. Our top stories. Its nearly three weeks since the president ial election and still donald trump refuses to concede. Today several key letters have been written to the president and government officials, urging them to take part in the transition process. A series of key financial packages helping people hit by the coronavirus are due to expire at the end of the year. Talks to extend them have been deadlocked. Well ask former labor secretary robert reich what can be done. Also in the programme. An american child forced to appear in an is propaganda video after he was taken to syria speaks to the bbc about his ordeal and what life is like, now hes back home. Its like being in tight close or tight shoes and tight socks all day and thenjust tight shoes and tight socks all day and then just taking it off, the sweet relief. And the turkeys arrive for the annual thanksgiving pardon. Two years ago President Trump scolded a turkey for refusing to concede and demanding recounts sound familiar . More than 160 top ceos have signed a letter urging the Trump Administration to relent and recognise the result of the election. Every day that an orderly president ial transition process is delayed, says the letter our democracy grows weaker in the eyes of our own citizens and the nations stature on the global stage is diminished. Withholding resources and Vital Information from an Incoming Administration puts the public and Economic Health and security of america at risk. Its notjust the Business Community waving the red flag. Today, 100 gop National Security experts called on Congressional Republicans to demand President Trump concedes so the transition to the Biden Administration can begin. The chorus of republicans willing to speak out is still small but its certainly growing. I have fully supported the president pursuing every plausible strategy, recount and litigating irregularities but at some point you exhaust those possibilities. I think the president has reached that point in pennsylvania. Michigan wasnt even close. The voters spoke and here again in michigan, its 154,000 votes. You have to let them stand. We used to go supervise elections around the world and we were the most respected country with respect to elections and now we are beginning to look like a banana republic. The counsel for the legal team has been an embarrassment. I voted for him twice but elections have consequences and we cannot continue to act as if something happened here that didnt happen. Remember, he was in the prepping for the First Television debate. Lets bring in former Trump Campaign adviser, bryan lanza. Lovely to see you. It is creaking, this legal strategy now, who will speak to the president and find a way to withdraw with some respect . Thank you for having me. All of us have a responsibility to do so, including Rudy Giuliani. New president has exhausted all of his options available to him to contest this election. He went too far by having the Senate Leaders come to the white house and do the electorate that way. We lost the election, i hate losing, i really hate losing, but we are where we are and its time to turn the page, and the presidency is the author and and i think its about certification. Very little can be done after to d efy very little can be done after to defy the elections. And another race is coming up and coming up quickly, which are the two of run races. We we re which are the two of run races. We were talking to a journalist on our programme who said the problem for the candidates down there as they are not able to deploy their best strategy because the best strategy is to say, hey, come about with ours, we are the firewall to stop joe biden. They are not saying that, they are saying donald trump should still be in the white house, which is not a plausible argument. Its a bit of a mixed message for sure. Their strongest argument is we are the backstop. President trump put us in these positions. At the end of the day, the voters of georgia, i find it hard to believe they will elect democrat. This january when they didnt have an officejoe biden as the ticket and now they dont have a ticket. Things will go back to normal in january, have a ticket. Things will go back to normal injanuary, republicans will win the seat, now figured out how to appeal to a working class voter but at the end of the day, that talks will get carried on without us. That torch will be carried on. What happens now . Does he go to tamara lago at christmas and just never concede . He go to tamara lago at christmas and just never concede . |j he go to tamara lago at christmas and just never concede . I dont see him conceding. We signed you something to the effect. I dont see him conceding but i do see him saying that the rules were changed in the middle of the game for him or the middle of the match in the uk, and the argument he will make to say thatjoe biden is a legitimate president and the rules were changed in the middle of the match and that was incredibly unfair. Is there a risk that if he doesnt recognise reality, it damages his chances for 2024 . I dont think so. Look at Stacey Abrams and georgia. She lost the race two years ago and she hasnt conceded. Everyone in the liberal media is calling her a frontrunner for 2022. I think there isa frontrunner for 2022. I think there is a pattern there. She has never conceded. To this day, she has not considered the election so you have an example there of a losing candidate not conceding but still gaining some steam or momentum next time around which everyone says she is, which means we are in a unique time so is, which means we are in a unique time so i dont think conceding or not damages ones brand because we have not seen it happen with Stacey Abrams. I know youve been a trump supporter but do you worry about what effect this is having on american democracy and how it is seen american democracy and how it is seen around the world . For a part of this weekend, we were supposed to believe according to the president s legal team that hugo chavez had somehow paid off brian kent, the governor in georgia, working in cahoots with the cia to rig the vote it. It doesnt get more keystone cops than that. They have to come up with more evidence and then on the right, they are saying why . Its getting ludicrous. It is out there in the mainstream and that is why they will not go anywhere. That is the challenge. He is looking to Rudy Giuliani to try to find a path for each day that passes, that gets more and more in todays a very significant day. Be the path closes today so i think anything the world can see we are resista nt. Anything the world can see we are resistant. We still honour the individual vote and transition. But if youre looking at america and see someone as strong a if youre looking at america and see someone as strong a personality as trump, that is what the world should see. When all the results are cast and counted, michigan have certified there are speculation this morning that maybe the republicans would hold out but it was three to certify and one abstention. They needed a majority of three, didnt they . But that one republican did still refused to certify. They didnt vote not to certify so its an interesting one. Pennsylvania next to certify, we are waiting on that one. Meanwhile it could be a miserable Holiday Season here for Many Americans who have many of the relief packages. Unless they can renew them. It could be a miserable Holiday Season for millions of americans. Many of the key relief packages keeping people afloat are due to expire at the end of the year unless democrats and republicans can thrash out a deal to renew them. The talks have been deadlocked for months with the democrats looking for a whopping 2 billion dollar in extra funding the republicans are negotating closer to 500m. They are a long way apart. And here are the key packages that are due to expire if they cant come to a deal. Expanded Unemployment Benefits will go it has been helping 13. 5 million americans. Also going on december 31st the pause in student loan repayments and on new years day the moratorium on evictions expires. 32 of americans are behind on their mortgage or rent payments. Lets talk to robert reich former us labor secretary and author of the system who rigged it, how we fix it when you look at all these things that are due to end at the year end, we are does this take us to the point of the inauguration . This could be a very messy economy that joe biden and her. Not only a messy economy and messy politics but of regular human suffering, which really transcends everything else. We are on the precipice as these programmes and and as it researchers. More and more people are in danger of losing their homes, losing the ability to simply to continue to live on that and have food on their table. This should not be the case. We should never get to this point, but because the republicans and democrats category, the republicans have resisted since may with any type of coronavirus Disaster Relief package, here we are, and we are facing a terrible, terrible christmas for millions and millions. Really joe biden has a record of reaching across the aisle and getting the job record of reaching across the aisle and getting thejob done but i want you to have a listen to this, this is kate bedingfield, who was the Campaign Manager talking to fox news on sunday about a potential meeting between joe on sunday about a potential meeting betweenjoe biden on sunday about a potential meeting between joe biden and on sunday about a potential meeting betweenjoe biden and Mitch Mcconnell. And it is the Senate Majority leader who is refusing to come through the table. Would biden meet with mcconnell right now . Yes, absolutely. Absolutely, yes. Yes. It is important that the senator comes to the table and we are very hopeful, we are very hopeful that we will be able to see progress soon on this bill, because people all around the country desperately needed. Why would mcconnell come now to the table . Goal you will not. Ifjoe biden thinks he will be able to hold out and all of ranking Mitch Mcconnell, then he is fooling himself. Mitch mcconnell does not wa nt to himself. Mitch mcconnell does not want to compromise one bit. His power and money coming into really republican coffers depend on absolute the no compromise on Mitch Mcconnell remember is the same Senate Leader who he beginning of barack obama cosmic administration said his one major goal was for the barack Obama Administration to be a one term administration. One of the most fiercely partisan leaders of politics, Senate Leaders we have ever had in this country. Meanwhile, to your point, the us treasury secretary has pulled the plug on emergency lending programmes. How much more difficult does this make life . And including, its being reported that janet yellen will be incoming treasury secretary. Reported that janet yellen will be incoming treasury secretarym makes it very difficult because it means the fed, the central bank, has less wiggle room. That treasury backing gave the fed the ability to doa backing gave the fed the ability to do a lot of buying of corporate debt, buying of state and local debt, buying of state and local debt, basically acting like its own backstop. Without that and without the treasury or that programme, their hands are tied. This is not a very good thing for the Biden Administration, but what you see is across the board, the Trump Administration trying to make life as difficult for the administration, burning all the bridges as they leave. We have an emergency, coronavirus emergency. This is not time to play politics. On the side forjoe biden, if we get a Coronavirus Vaccine by the spring or summer that most people take, do you think the economy can bounce right back because of the pent up demand . Certainly will not in the top 10 make it certainly will. The bottom 90 are in quite bad shape, not saving or if anything, going deeper and deeper into debt. It is a tale of two economies and two parts of the united they, too americans in terms of the kind of condition going into the spring and into the summer. Lets hope the vaccines can be easily administered and lets hope we get beyond this as fast as possible. One question, im almost out of time but i want to ask, there are senior democrat pushing out against biden, he says get a deal done, even if it is a skinny deal. Do you see it as a split in the party from where youre sitting . Its a tactical question with some people saying tojoe biden, right now, we are in an emergency, try to get as much as you can bejoe biden has no power right now, he is president elect, he will not be president elect, he will not be president untiljanuary 20 in the real question is whether nancy pelosi, the head of the Democratic Party in the house, whether she right now takes whatever she can from Mitch Mcconnell who is offering 500 million, not nearly enough but something and a lot of people are saying to nancy pelosi, take what you can get right now and establish a foundation forjoe biden when it comes around on january a foundation forjoe biden when it comes around onjanuary 20. President trump will pardon one of these turkeys tomorrow for the thanksgiving holiday. A few years ago, it was talk of a turkey refusing to concede that has left an familiar taste in the mouths of many. The publisher of the oxford dictionary has revealed its word of the year. In fact, its revealed 16 because of the many new situations and experiences during 2020. Amal rajan reports. We need people to start working from home where they possibly can. And announcing an effective lockdown. But are furloughed and kept on payroll. Supplies of face masks for key Health Workers could be put at risk. Adults who are living alone will be able to mix in their support bubbles. Language evolves, but this year its grown and changed faster than ever. Thats why, for the first time, oxford languages are publishing words of the year plural rather than a single word of the year. The main driver of change is the pandemic, of course. Words like furlough, staycation, and coronavirus are all among the words of the year. Usage of the words remote and remotely are both up by more than 300 since march. And covid is a new word for 2020. The other big reason is that this is the too much information age. I know nothing about qanon. With social media spouting words every second of every day, particular words spread and gain currency faster than ever. Though intriguingly, usage of the word brexit is down by 80 . I think the words really that have had the most impact have to probably be for everybody the covid type words, as we are calling them, so either things to do with the pandemic itself, and the disease or treatment, or also the ways that we have had to adapt to life, and fascinating for me, certainly, is that these words have gone almost from we probably didnt think wed ever use these words before, and suddenly, almost every conversation we are having is peppered with these words. It is notjust the pandemic, weve had acute social and racial protests and racial injustice, weve had a pivotal election, weve had raining bush fires and wild fires, we have had a savage economic recession. You know, youve got all of those on the table, and i thinkjust using one would generally do an injustice to the year that weve just had. Never before in Human History has so much language been around us, but 2020 always had the feeling of a landmark year, and the words weve used have provided evidence aplenty. Amol rajan, bbc news. Its like thinking of someone that basically has your life in their grasp. Say one wrong thing, and they could easilyjust kill you. In december 2017, i travelled to syria and spoke to matthews mother, whod escaped with her children and was being held in a kurdish detention camp. She claimed she had been tricked into going to syria by her husband, moussa. I didnt know what was happening. I assumed that i was being lied to. I see my husband crossed through friends, and he just goes. He knows he knows im going to follow him. What am i going to do . Her husband, who had become an Islamic State group sniper, was killed. Matthew and his mother were flown back to the us injuly 2018. When you first came back to america, what did it feel like . Its like being in tight clothes or tight socks and shoes all day, and then just taking it off, thats what it felt like. Like sweet relief. Matthews mother, Samantha Sally, was arrested and charged with providing Material Support for terrorism, which she denied. A year later, in november 2019, she took a plea deal and admitted financing terrorism and supporting her husband to join the terror group. I spoke to her injail. Do you accept that the choices you made put your children through some of the worst experiences you could imagine for a child to have for years . I accept that i was unable to make the decisions to protect them better. Earlier this month, she was sentenced to six and a half years. For her son matthew, the ordeal is now behind her.
