The World Health Organization will consider whether to declare an International Public Health Emergency and the uk is expected to begin monitoring flights arriving from china as part of a series of precautionary measures. The Health Authorities in china say nine people have died after catching the virus and the vice minister of the virus and the vice minister of the Health Commission there is a 440 other cases have been confirmed. Our Health Correspondent Tulip Mazumdar has this report. A city on high alert. Wuhan, where this mysterious virus first emerged, is bracing itself. Several hospitals in the city are already dealing with hundreds of cases. This virus, which can cause severe lung problems, appears to be spread through close contact with infected people. There are particular concerns ahead of the Lunar New Year as millions get ready to travel for the holidays. China says the situation is under control but many more cases are expected. The outbreak has already hit several areas of china, including the capital, beijing, and shanghai. A handful of cases have also been identified in other countries in the region. Two in thailand, one injapan and one in south korea. Now the us has also confirmed a case a traveller from china who became sick in seattle. The World Health Organization has only declared a global Health Emergency five times before, including for ebola and swine flu. Today Health Experts will meet to decide whether this outbreak poses a serious enough International Threat to call one again. They will be looking at what measures might be necessary in order to better deal with the outbreak. So, they will assess the outbreak based on three conditions is it unusual . Is it spreading internationally . And does it risk causing interruption of travel and trade . Screening is already underway at airports around the world. Its unclear how this outbreak is going to unfold, but Health Authorities are trying to be as prepared as possible. Tulip mazumdar, bbc news. We can get the latest from beijing now. In terms of what doctors are saying about the confirmed cases, how are they treating those people . Is there a treatment and is it obviously effecting people more so when they have Underlying Health conditions, they are perhaps already ill or frail . People are being asked to order what they think is most important, for example the first question, what do you believe is the most important factor for children growing up in the uk to live a happy adult life . Then you have a series of choices, which statement is closer to your opinion and how much you agree and disagree with the statement. Thought provoking questions, but really this is about tackling issues early on so they dont become bigger as children become young adults. Thats right. We know the first thousand days in particular, from conception to your second birthday, thatis conception to your second birthday, that is a crucial time in terms of your brain development, building a brain is like building a house and it happens from the bottom up. Tech may be driving the culture of always on but this entrepreneur thinks it could also be the solution. So, as my mood is going down, my work stress is going up. This app allows you to build up a picture of your mental well being so you can work out what triggers periods of high stress. I decided to take my recovery on like a job and i started tracking everything i was doing. And that is how arkeo came about. So, we are actually here to change the way people think about what it means to be fit, to include tracking their mental fitness. Doctor Nerina Ramlakhan is a sleep expert with 20 years experience. People have become more wedded to their devices, really hard to switch off, to put them down. And what i am seeing is more sleep problems, more exhaustion, more burn out, because people simply cannot switch off. Nerina encourages her clients to ban the phone at bed time and take regular screen breaks and she says bosses need to lead the way. If you want your staff to come to work and bring the best of themselves to work, that means energised, inspired, there is a competitive advantage in that, isnt there . Amber agrees. She is now running her own business and is taking control of her work life balance. I ignored my body for a really long time and now i understand my health a lot better. I understand that i am not a robot. Some employers are waking up to the advantages of investing in Mental Health but the bigger battle could be our own inability to switch off. Zoe kleinman, bbc news. Well, lets discuss all of this with faye mcguinness. Shes the head of Workplace Wellbeing programmes at the Mental Health charity mind. When i was reading about the report, the thing that jumped when i was reading about the report, the thing thatjumped out was that delight because collated Companies Lose an average of nine days of work per employee every year deloitte. But only two of those days were due to absence, the other seven days the employees were at work but not really being productive. What this report tells us is that for employers, Mental Health of their employers, Mental Health of their employers is a business priority. And forward thinking employers know that if you invest in staff well being, you see not only increased motivation and loyalty and happiness but also increased productivity and that is important for businesses. We will come back to that in a second but that is essentially what presenteeism is, the feeling that one needs to be seen to be there even if someone is not feeling particularly well. Whether it is through physical ill health or mental ill health. That is an issue that individuals have to feel comfortable with addressing with their bosses as well . Absolutely. What we have seen is an increase in presenteeism and a decrease in people being absent so the feeling employees need to be in work when they are feeling unwell and they are not being as productive as they can be. But therefore people are not feeling confident in ringing up are not feeling confident in ringing up and saying, look, i cant come in today . Absolutely, we see cultures in workplaces where employees dont feel confident enough to be honest about the Mental Health and get the support they need to put it we need employers to create cultures and environments where employees know it is safe to talk about their Mental Health and also take the time off when they needed. How much has that culture happened and what other best practices you have seen amongst employers . There are some positive news stories. In october last year, a group of leading businesses worked with some business Industry Leaders and also like mind to lodge a set of standards that employers can sign up to and we have seen over 150 organisations sign up to it. We need organisations sign up to it. We need organisations to think about how you create cultures to improve Mental Health at work, out you support people with their Mental Health but also creating an environment where you can promote well being for everybody in the workplace. Presumably that best practice in not being replicated everywhere . We know there is a long way to go and there are some businesses that need to adopt the Mental Health at work commitment so from this report we would encourage employers to do that. What we need to see is more support for Small Businesses who might have less resource or budget to be able to implement some of the things they need to to improve employee well being but also there was a role to play notjust for employers but government. We know that things like the statutory sick payments, which are outdated in terms of what they provide, and many employees told us that being off sick impacts on their financial well being. It forces them to come into work much quicker than they would want to. And briefly, do you feel this has to be a top down initiative . If people as individuals, employees, are feeling less tha n individuals, employees, are feeling less than confident but stepping forward and saying they need time off because of Mental Health issues, something is going on in my life, that impetus has got to come from the top down . Absolutely. It has to bea the top down . Absolutely. It has to be a boardroom issue and part of an organisations strategy. It cannot be an add on, it has to be part of the day to day business and what we are seeing with some employers is when they are implement permitting this as part of their strategy, we are seeing some Great Results in how employees are feeling about their Mental Health. We know the existence from last year that there is a type of malware called the pegasus malware produced in israel and it may be Something Like this which may have been used in this case if indeed it is true. This is a rapidly evolving situation with some very limited information, but this virus is appearing to behave in a sweet spot where the incubation period between exposure and showing symptoms is about five days, which allows people to travel quite widely and then theres another four days where people get mildly ill before getting seriously when they present, and thats a period to allow them to spread and consequently, the virus is able to spread and transmit broadly. That makes it extremely difficult for anyone involved in a Screening Programme at airports around the world to actually find someone who is presenting with the virus . Those who are presenting other ones who are easy to spot, but the problem is the great majority will have no symptoms and cannot be screened on entry.
