those who paid the ultimate sacrifice will be remembered Sara Hamill in a very busy senator in London I do feel that it is one of the most moving parts of Remembrance Sunday seeing the war veterans of all ages of all of all abilities in the through various states of health that they will March they will continue to March to remember and honor their comrades they will be services and small Morial staking place around the country parades in all sorts of places large and small and we'll bring you a list of a few of the main events before 10 o'clock this morning if you'd like to add an event if you're taking part in one you want to pass on some information. Then please do say I 1000. 900. Cindy time to time 11 minutes past. 9 It is Sunday breakfast with gardening feature this morning I'm joined by Kate Savile Good morning Kate and now it is the weather has been great and it hasn't really felt like gardening weather but for some people that's your day in your day out whatever the weather it is always always always there's always something. Fortunately I've been doing a lot of designing Polunin to time. But I have to say they're still lots and lots of jobs that you could be doing in the garden and also just appreciating the beautiful colors that are out there you know this is one of the loveliest things is wherever you go I mean you can be in the middle of a city center you can be out in the countryside but all the leaves and the variety of colors seems to be particularly stunning this year for some reason this you know is a real richness in the colors on the leaves it does seem to be Yeah I was just miring the liquid ambers actually coming up. Next to the big wells building so it's just you know stunning a magnificent display of colors dye and it does seem to be quite strong this year so I wonder if that was the climate maybe this summer and then could more the wet. Autumn so it seems to be quite interesting if you don't have some sway in this case that. When it comes to you know your trees and the leaves obviously you know the leaves are falling from your deciduous trees you've got you've got leaves everywhere and you know while on a crisp clear day it's lovely to kind of go crunching through the leaves when it's so be in there they get all sludgy and not very nice so use it in important garden job to get rid of those leaves or you doing good by leaving them I would say it depends where it is on your lawns in the if you want a lovely pristine or no I would be cleaning up those leaves because yes it can seem to be able to you know you do it one way you can do and then you go back the next weekend and it's completely covered say. It's a really important job but I would say keep those leaves and actually store them to create a leaf mulch and say you know getting rid of anything is not a waste and it's a really nice simple easy job so how do you store them because do you put them into sort of bin bags do you put them into a dust bin are you trying to break them down you are it depends what type of leaf So let's say a deciduous tree. Is probably your best to create the leaf mulch and basically you can gather them up put them in a bin liner but make sure there's holes in those been benign is because otherwise it doesn't it doesn't have the oxygen to create this beautiful rich leaf mold soil so basically you can do that put them in a bin bag with some holes and tie it up and put it out of sight to yeas. Magic to let you know that sounds like quite a commitment to me that's forward planning Yes absolutely but in 2 years' time you'll have the best soil conditioner. And you can just sprinkle that all throughout your beds and mix it in even if you're creating new planting beds it is really the most wonderful soil food ever so if you have some storage space in your garden you know it's nice spacious shed if you get you know this year's leaves a couple years time from now just make sure you label them yes absolutely you know you want to go right to them and that's a really good way of making you some not having to necessarily go and buy something that will enrich your soul exactly you know this is promoting make doom and so let's use things that we've already got in our garden use the same plastic bag as well we can we can do that or you can actually buy leaf mold makers if you want sort of invest in something for the future but I just think it's a really practical way of bringing nutrients in to. Now I just well we're sort of on the theme of tidying things up in and around the garden there are some plants and things that have been beautiful through the summer and the early autumn that have now gone over do you. Ever think back does it depend on the plant I mean for example that you've got hydrangeas Now a lot of the time it's a device that you keep those heads of those hydrangeas in place for as long as possible is that right is absolutely right it's actually when wet is concerned that things you so in an ideal world yes you want to keep those hydrangea heads on because it protects the new buds which is what you're going to have the new flowers next year so the best time to prune hydrangeas is next spring and it almost feels like the right time because at the moment the flower heads almost have a stately presence already you know throughout the winter they will hold their flower heads and almost give you structure. And then you will prune them back next year and it really does feel like they need they need tidying up at that point so I see that's the thing there you know if you're if you're the kind of gardener who wants things need to be precise it can be very difficult to look at those that the heads of those hydrangeas turning brown and so just not looking that great but they have to sit tight they have to sit tight but sort of going back to if it is really really really damp and quite a sludgy warm sort of winter months I would say it's in some cases it will actually do the plant more damage keeping with the wet rotting plant matter. What about the some of the sort of legacy of plants that have been around you know you've got this in Cora one of this is butterflies and you've got the bin are there also sort of they to be cut back or are they to stay in play it is again is actually preference on that point so some people say it is a lovely feature to have throughout the winter months especially if we have cold crisp spring. Frosty mornings is actually keep those Fillmore structure in the garden I would say again if you will if we have a very wet winter they can start to look very very sad in my garden because it is quite small I would prune them back and almost tidy it all up for winter and then I don't have to do anything again until next spring see there's an idea you see when you talk it away and use of popular way for winter time instead now that things like grasses and things like that or do really well through the summer look beautiful and wavy in the summer go brown and a little bit limp by the now do you need to get rid of those so you you know a lot of those tidying up sort of jobs you can wonder to yourself Same with pruning 20 for now if I print the spring do I prune hard do I prune little bit you know there are there are question marks over a lot of the plants out in our garden so absolutely and there's some plants that I would say you have to stick to the rules and you have to prune at the right time especially things like shrubs and when things have flowers and so you know messing up when you get the next session of flowers but things like grasses comes under that category of doesn't look messy do I like it. Is it holding its shape and I would say you can either prune it now or next spring so keep it over winter if the flower heads a really strong and they look very architectural in the garden they can provide a lot of food and nutrients bill things like that and other wildlife so I but I would say if you're in a kind of still be climate I'd probably chop back you know they were all in a pretty soggy. Day not so bad just now so here are the moments that now let's talk about bringing some brightness and some color into our gardens for winter because if we're trying to get rid of some of that sort of sludge mucky brown stuff that we're sweeping away those leaves and we're just trimming back some of those things that have died off what are we replacing them with so there's lots of varieties of plant you can replace them with a beautiful show up I really like this time of year. It's called the skimming and that is an evergreen very small shrub and you can plant them in pots with things like heaven had a and I think they look stunning at this time of year very kind of. I'd say the right kind of color scheme for this time of year we got the Greens red white and beautiful blues so I really think they look gorgeous in pots and also you can plant things like you know util Viola's Neo winter pansies which look great but I would say had There's a really beautiful this time is a funny one when it turns to the sort of the colder months and you see some plants which actually they should be really quite delicate and they do very well in winter I mean sick woman is a really good example of a plant that you know they look so dainty and like you know they do you know one puff of wind and they go but they they have hardly little things they're very hardy little things and you get you get you all to flowering and winter flying sickman and then your springs you they can actually go last year all the way through these cold months a great variety of color as well Absolutely and I love the variegated leaves I think they're absolutely stunning and they again they like living under trees they're under love like kind of p. And the leaf so they can really add a pack of color punch to your God have we reached the point in the year where it's too late to add any more bulbs you can still add bulbs certainly cheer lips at this point daffodils it's slightly getting too late full and but things like Toulouse will be fantastic for next year so I would say if it's if you can bag going out there planting more till it's because I think the more the merrier. I was still being affected in my garden by a plethora of weeds where they just don't go away ever die it seems. Like they seem to grow much better much faster than anything else I plant out of my garden and if you're looking for ways of trying to sort of maintain your garden space and as you say sort of structurally speaking things like 2nd men although the others all the Pansies. Low to the ground and small have you got a any ideas for sort of some plants which might sort of give a little bit more height to your bed and you got absolutely say I think I've said this before but coolness is an absolute champion at this time of year it is a medium shrub and it has these long architectural stems and they come in a variety of colors so at this time of year it loses its leaves and you see these beautiful best stems and they come in sort of yellow and red even down to blacks which can look really striking against the white will say so they really do provide such a good presence in the garden at this time here I do notice though that you can still see some plants that are flowering really quite well slightly later I don't know maybe the temperatures have stayed relatively mild up until this point although the last couple of nights been a bit cold but yeah there's some plants of lasted really quite well maybe had a sort of 2nd showing Yes Absolutely I've got 2 plants actually in my garden they have been flowering all summer and that is one which is geranium Roxanne and that is a classic geranium you know that really rich purply blue color and it's still flying and it will keep going until until I chop it down so it's a really reliable plant if you want something that flowers or summer or winter so I drain the muck sand and also my. My my surfaced my little things still it's still flowering which is amazing and it's it's on its flowering succession so I would say that's a beautiful yes young value for money there exactly and I love that and if I'm noticed I've got a few planted out in my garden and they have been doing relatively well and they still seem to be well enjoyed by the mice age seems to be being chewed by something I'm not sure what at this point in time how can you identify what what. The issues are with with some of these sorts of plants which seem like you know they're being eaten but we're not necessarily sure whether it's a caterpillar of some kind of maybe slugs or scales or be interesting to find so I find that if it is slug damage you have to look in the garden and think that you know they really don't tend to eat things like. Kind of that Willy type plant so I would say if they're that desperate then they'd go for you know at that age but it's really investigating what is happening on whether the plant is being munched if the leaves of being munched it probably is something like a slug or a caterpillar Yes if it has something like the lines taken away all my stripping the color out of the leaf again that might be something like a and you know a might or smaller insect but I really have to say just identifying and seeing if you can find things like eggs it could be butterfly lovey it could just be. You really do have to just ask this so it can be so hard to work out the reasons why something might not necessarily be doing so well when we have our gardening phone with Mary so many of you that are calling us a cooling because you're not quite sure why the plant is looking like it's going to limp or why it's kind of when the leaves have turned a funny color and you know solving your own gardening problems can be quite a difficult job it can be and I think the more you get used to your garden going out there you you really know each individual plant and you can really tell what you can start to understand why things like that might be happening quite often than not I mean the main main sort of important part of the plant is the root structure yeah so it's actually again down to the soil so things. Like her and so did those more Mediterranean type plants will need much more drainage and great into the soil so that could be a massive indicator of why the plant might be suffering and again a plant that is suffering into gc's becomes maybe more than a host for things like bugs and you have to place to to take advantage of the poorly plant now might bounce of finally because a company from the half hour is gone so quickly the software this morning now. Last question really is is what is currently sort of out there they sort of trendy. Treatments for your garden the trendy way to you know have your garden looking at the moment is we looking at structural gardens are we looking at sort of you know gardens that look like they've been sort of rammed stuff randomly growing especially when we're going into winter you know it's a difficult time of year for people who have had gardens which have been fully focused on summer and sort of spring plants you want to have some winter interest so if you are transforming your garden a little for winter what sort of styles are you know see highly sought after I would say it's tricky time of year actually but it's a great time of year to start planning and an important thing to get right is the structure. And I would say that's quite a trend at the moment maybe some clipped shape so you can get a really beautiful Pittsburgh. And at the moment I'd say box is having a bit of a bit of a hard time of it as a box caterpillar in those books like I do about box blight but the box Caterpillar as well yeah yeah unfortunately is just having a really bad time of the year. Lots of plants are being imported so it's bringing over these sort of pests and diseases it's been really hard to fight and that must be quite a big issue at the moment because I mean whether it's people sort of. Importing you know for it magic things I let me bring in the bugs with them but when you're when you know importing plants from around the world all sorts of risk encounters being that might devastating and and you know we've had a rich history of beautiful Topeka. And I would say that it's been quite a challenge to manage it at the moment so good alternatives that's what I'm suggesting is using plants like pits as Boren you have you and these plants are much more hardy and much more resilient to things like the last couple of years that have been quite a focus on native saying is that sort of backlash to exotic plants I think yeah I think all these you know trends with everything there's always a big sway one way in and breaks way we start to realize the damage that maybe we're doing so I am using native plants is very important for our native wildlife so if if and when you can that would be amazing so you're proof k. That we don't have to just sit indoors looking at the Wynn out the window at our gardens we should be actually getting on and doing I can get out is cheaper than the gym. That's a good way of selling it. Right as ever it's lovely to see you really come in again a few weeks time absolutely no suff let's think in a few weeks type one and almost be Christmas card that we've made in my household we've been talking about Christmas for the last 6 months take very excited and I would say lovely to see you again soon thank you Somerset's people Elvis impersonators must see rock and event saying I mean we're at. Someone you loved 10 to 10 on Remembrance Sunday for many of you are preparing to head off to services around the West Country area this week I met the last surviving dumba George Johnny Johnson attending a special service at Cabot Circus we spoke about the importance of remembrance I think that one day is my 4th year for this to 10. By 5 that. People can still be chipping be interested to come and celebrate perhaps at a great start right workers remember. Why the profit of poppy the interest created. And why do you think that is so important I think so important that. All people. Should remember the number of people with given their lives sacrifice their lives for freedom. Life is absolutely do you think this generation has taken that for granted I think the younger generation of veterans are becoming much more respected.
