Hello I'm the warmest welcome to Wednesday program age the 28th of February is the last day of February we're putting everything into this program to make it a very listenable experience for you we certainly don't anticipate any problems. I don't know about you Becky I'm certainly not out of Love Aaj should all of the love to get across in some boxes as well as I've got to meet oxygen to the bad hold storage in fact small slabs where you can buy online estate so much cheaper than getting love from your local grocer yap see you there once there was a spillage on the way into my house I record look after that kind of thing. The great mass of life which makes it worth living a very warm welcome to the program it's the last day of February and we've invited back because no one else was available nobody nobody Martin has left the country just to be disassociated from our health care and other people just refused to do it Yeah Becky has quite a low bar for what should accept and she's a she's come in regardless in this now I thank you so much for coming back here to be here it's lovely to have back your board today on the show today what we've got a real Schmoke a spork of stuff which you can with your ears perusing the press the Mirror reports that children would rather be a pop star than a politician well that makes sense yeah I mean you look at some of the politicians I don't want to point the finger at but you can think of a few that come to mind would you want to be like them well if you're a pop star you get to have great hair if your policy or Titian you tend to look like boys Jones and say Frank for the hair sake alone I would definitely be a pops the writer I mean backstage if you're a top pop singer Rianna she probably gets home mortgage support I mean something like that great big faced Yes seated punk. Granites Yeah you can get that if you were Jeremy called new interview like a Russ question imagine Yes So let's talk about that if you're a child would you rather be a pop star or a politician I don't think even politicians want to be politicians but it's a little bit like Hitchhiker's Guide To The Galaxy those who want to be called shouldn't be too harsh Well we'll talk about that in some detail or maybe we'll ignore it Crisp's I'm a big advocate of Crispin I was in Ross on why a couple of weeks ago we stayed for the weekend in a pub and they had. A bottle of perspective for 9 pounds something me and my wife shared and had a bag of crisps and it was like being in heaven and there was a roaring fire and ice convivial yes fear in their few dogs knocking around brilliant for my daughter was upstairs doing some coloring or something she came down later but it was just an ideal so I think crisps are very important to life and I think saying absolutely what flavor would you go for here to put a figure on one he said was going to be salted also vinegar you know I do like dip him in hummus now now that is sophistication I had a thing for sausage and tomato some years ago I don't know if they're still available but your view on Crystal of course they've changed haven't they Becky since we were children very simple walkers or golden wonder they are manner of gourmet crisps and no fact crisps in tried to crisps What is that a waste of time at the way let's talk about Chris so I think a nice crisp and a nice drink lemonade is a lovely treat it is do flamingos spend too long standing around all day I've never seen a firming go do anything other than Langmuir round some head to dipping in the water yet that's not really a great job you know there's some other birds I mean look at Humalog it's going to chew Valley like they're always busying around you turn up whether you've got bread or not they'll go for you I mean they're trying to earn their keep are they doing yoga however they feel because they're on that one leg with. The leg tucked up maybe they just do yoga all day but just one pose it was suggested in the past they had one leg in the air because they were drying their nail varnish that may be true plus buttons or zips if you had to choose one of the 2. Closures what would you go for buttons get stuck where they have to have their quick I mean what I put on my thought length boots the zip zip and they're on you try and gotten them up it takes flippin a yes and also I find that lacing family says Well that's difficult you did find it difficult thank you and if I insisted upon it yeah let's talk about it buttons versus zips skin can get caught in zit as well isn't how or for fun and I don't to go on too much detail but men occasionally can have a problem with zip which can result in a trip to hospital but why don't they just wear underwear just. I'll tell you some more details when the chains on. Steve absolute show on this wonderful Wednesday the 28th of February and I welcome in the studio my super guest of the day it is Simon Tyler Hello Simon Good morning thank you so much for coming in now some are going to tell us about his book The Keep it simple book he's a motivational speaker a world class business coach an inspirational author but is he any good as a guest Well we'll see showing in my mother what plays of that description no problem until he speaks writes and teaches around the world in fact you were recently in Canada when you know I was about 10 days ago and I read a very short piece just about how Canadians accept snow and I suggested that we don't handle it very well and it's just turned up for us now how we don't really handle the threat of snow and then real snow as it were going to be fair though I mean we get in drizzle what they get in snow they're more familiar with this you know scenario on the Habs totally geared up for it obviously the vehicles are kids out with snow tires and when the cars are drifting around the road they just accept that when we go into flat panic probably were you working when you were there was a had a couple of speaking gigs out there which always makes it feel very important when you go do that yes but largely it was holiday with friends and skiing and skating and doing all the things that Canadians do yeah I've always wanted to go to Canada because it's such a vast country which is often ignored in the media bizarrely because it's massive and it has so much contrast across its range and the language differences with the French and the English speaking it's a marvelous place to visit where would you recommend there well I always go to the capital which is also a which I absolutely love the place because it's it's it is such a big country but 2 hours from everything you possibly want is not about 2 hours to Toronto to Montreal to the mountains it's such an incredible country and they generally are nice people yeah there's $30000000.00 of them said about half the size of the u.k. In terms of population and massive massive organization a massive company run country rather with just so much outdoor activity it is incredible here they've got a bit of a problem in recent months of course people in the United States bro. Eking into Canada through the border and they believe well I say recent truck got elected at least the thought of it. Though is a vast country and there is a lot of space it has been an issue but the tension between the 2 come out is quite close to that subject because my best friend the guy a visit over there is an immigration lawyer one of the number one immigration lawyers in Canada so he has a constant flow of applications from Americans who want to become Canadian citizens and while scanner is always actively looking to to have people to to move to their country because they need resources they need to grow as a country. He has to manage the flow there's lots of people who want to jump the border now so yeah well we'll watch that with interest over the coming years now you're described as a pioneer in the field of personal growth and the power of attitude in attitude is all more talk about that in more detail but want to find out bit about you as a person I'm not sure where you're from originally where were you born I was born in reading in Berkshire not so far away lived on the edge of West London firmest my life and then moved to Wilshere about 15 or 16 years ago 15 years ago where you studied business at Thames Valley University then you did marketing you were various companies including a couple of mention in passing i.c.i. Paints did you get a discount on paints when did your ideas on the staff discount the product was wonderful it's worth it and I see we're b.s.f. For a short time but I always associate them with cassette tapes Yeah I was in again it was a chemical division so I was in the cassette tape and there wasn't a staff shop there so I didn't get discount on tape doesn't always work out you've been coaching since 2001 tell me about the attitude with him in project what was that well that's something I do to American colleagues and we put together a dial in a phone in the early days of before all the technology we now use for dial ins and online downline downloadable where webinars and the like and at 9 o'clock. In that was East Standard Time which was 2 o'clock in the afternoon u.k. We would have a 15 minute call where people would ring in a lesson to us to live in and a vitamin for their attitude so it's just a short punchy suggestion or thought an idea of a way of just boosting your attitude and I'm glad you introduced that subject because later this year my next book is out and it's called the attitude book and it's born from that so there's 50 attitude vitamins if you like in that book but that's later on this year Ok well we'll talk about that again in a moment your in the past I see been managing director m.d. Of the Somerset arms What was the things of the start seems a little bit quirky for you how did that come about you and your research teams have if it's just me well I live in a village in in Wiltshire with medical center in the village pub the sums arms closed and my wife now ex-wife and I thought we could take that on we could open up and we did so for 3 and a half years we relaunched the sums arms and it's now a very buoyant pub and in fact tomorrow night I'm delivering the quiz that also my commitment to the new landlord Well good on you for revitalizing it because I hate it when a pub closes a particular community pub like that it was really tough at the time because I remember trying to research the pub is the hub and there's lots of activities out there but to make a pub if there's any listeners who are going to be involved in pubs or realise this in the villages it's really difficult to make them viable you need a good restaurant you need obviously the drinking aspect but you need to look at everything else can it be a post office sub point can it be. A drop off point different things to try and generate money yeah well life change doesn't look people drink at home these days and tobacco ban in pubs affected sells a good deal I'm sure it has but that's in the past although I presume you still like to drink occasionally in moderation of course these days you're a speaker an author a coach or mentor personal strategist a facilitator you've been hired by many global corporations b.p. Castro the point Lloyds Bank. M.N.'s Morgan Stanley 02 votes fucking else I'm very good on the farm so please they were all pleased with what Simon delivered and I see in 2010 you studied coaching mastery at a monastery in Baltimore a Native American settlement in Arizona and a garden in Boston now that point you're just wavering To me into the area ferry were you know you did enjoy didn't you know I did well for me being perhaps a classic Brit when I went over there was a again another American friend of mine was running this institute and anybody who's listening who's who lives or works in coach land which is where I live we know we have to be open to that end of the spectrum perhaps when I remember turning up to this monastery and particularly to this Native American Indian settlement thinking what am I doing here really I'm British and they're asking me to clap my hands and play a drum I don't do that I sit and listen and make notes so it was a really good challenge for how I suppose I'm unconscious bias and I know that some of the subjects we talk about on the radio recently all the stuff came up for me and it took me several hours to get over myself almost and then all of a sudden. This is actually pretty good I'm learning stuff here yes it was a great experience now your basic philosophy is in order to move forward you must create a space clear away what is confusion and then take action to clarify in simplify your interactions with the world which can be summed up in making it simple which of course is the crux of your book you've done some interesting stuff over the years you write a simple note in your new website regularly every couple of weeks about various different issues that occur to you what topics have you covered on that thing in the past well it strikes me I try to get them out every 2 weeks to try because as a subscriber base but I go out on Twitter and Linked In and the like. And it will be whatever has happened to me maybe the conversations I've had with some my coaching clients or maybe something that's struck me that I've notice I've walked around some of the conferences I speak at and most recently the one that was out last Monday was about the weather I briefly mentioned at the top of our conversation which was how I noticed how the Canadians handle the conditions and how we handle conditions and I absolutely love a metaphor it's probably annoying for everyone knows me that whatever happens to me I turn is a metaphor are it could mean this and I turned that into absolutely just kidding ourselves now if you're not if you all if you go to work expecting to be one way and it's not you're going to have a tough time just as I saw the Canadian if Brits lived in Canada would get used to it you said this yourself yes but it's preparing for an accepting what shows up yes go with the flow Why not relax I see that you were speaking not that long ago with staff and offenders the guys March prison less than a new you want to do is there yeah a colleague of mine is one of the heads of learning for Southwest prisons which is a contract this managed by Western College local to here and I've often offered to talk at the prisons are spoken at a number of the open prisons. To just do my bit to see if I can help shift in attitudes maybe help them to simplify things it's it's it's a real challenge yeah and it certainly is because I mean the the offenders themselves may have committed a crime but the crime had a lead up to it which could stem from something in childhood that was traumatic the way they were brought up I mean a many many reasons which result in them breaking the law and you can't design a pick that immediately Kenya and. It's for it's too easy to say well they're criminals let's leave them there because they've still got something to give them and I meet people I hold myself to try and just appreciate anybody on me for everything they are and possibly even they could be as well which keeps you open to the fact there's more potential and there's a great challenge working with the offenders in these different prisons there's still something they've got to give but it's locked as you say it might be a child it might be a mental health issue it might be some of them making up it's this challenge in there that. We shouldn't just ignore them you're listening to the see the obsoletion my guest at the moment is Simon Tyler the motivational speaker world class business coach not not you know just local world class and inspirational author Let's talk about your books before we get to the new book Let's look at your previous books you wrote The simple way a pragmatic roadmap to simplicity so clearly for some time you've been keen on this simple concept because Simon meant that I was cursed with being called Simple Simon for pretty much all of my childhood and I railed against it and I remember as I went through early work early career I just tried to prove to people I was complicated not really complicated I'm not simple stop calling you Simple Simon and eventually it was when I was being coached myself I got from called the result from . From the u.s. East Coast the u.s. And he said to me Santa Why don't you just accept it. And there was that silence as the penny and many more pennies dropped to them let's say more about that so we talked about it for a while and yes I just accepted that simplicity is my hill it's the way when I meet people I tend to simplify the conversation if I'm not sure I'll help them break it down a bit more let's get what does this really mean one of the wonderful questions is you know what do you want such a great and very very simple question and just to hold what you want as a question of quite often links people from maybe some complexities that they're making up now we should mention that all the books written by Simon are still available that was an early book called The Simple Way Then there was the impact code 50 ways to enhance your presence an impact at work 50 pieces of wisdom for leaders and thinkers and you also wrote the impact book didn't you just tell me just tell me what you mean by impact Well my books if I can just if you're forgive me to go back one step I realize the people I tend to be working with whether it be at conferences or on the coach and I want one bases in business there are sort of people haven't got the time to read a book so what do I think I'm doing writing a book for people around the time to read a book Hence they're all chunks of my simple notes I write every 2 weeks have become the chapters in most of my books they're short they might be one of 2 pages long They're don't have to be read in a straight line so you know it's not page wanna work through the end of the book you can dip in and out and if one particular simple note or impact note doesn't resonate with you ignore it move on there's another one coming that might work and it to go back to a questionnaire the impact book came from I just noticed that lots of the work I was involved in with people they were asking me to help them with their impact impact with their colleagues and with their customers in their organization in their communities how to enhance their impact not just presenting although that's a very big part of it. But it might be how they come across it might be how they dress it might have a stand it might be how they communicate in the written word there's many aspects of having impact and I uncoupled 4 main parts and that's what's in the impact code how do you feel when you're in front of a large audience because I know you do want to ones but you sometimes do conferences where you've got hundreds of people often eminent people Piro earning a lot of money busy people who haven't got that much time you're up onstage and I was sort of audiovisual guides you use when you're in that position but you feel a little bit nervous before you step out every time people find this difficult to believe us I'm you lots but I do do a lot speeches but every time I still feel a flutter of nerves and I want a simple that some years ago talked specifically about this which is we all have an inner judge of mine a judge quite often would say to me you're not good enough you're not good enough they won't like you or whatever it was saying to me and that would make me increasingly nervous or anxious and I feel parts of my body get really hot you know my stunt my chest my throat really are and if you don't become aware of that it can make your voice sound funny it can make you start to shake and quiver on stage and that takes away from your impact so I learnt to to observe that voice in my head if you like or the conversation I was having about not being good enough or whatever my little demon was saying and slowly over a period of time just calm it down and everything was Ok yeah and I took a step I spoke a Bristol event probably 3 or 4 years ago and I decided that this was going to be the event I do not use any visual aids and that was a big step because I realize that when I talk I tend to obviously source from my simple notes from the set keep it simple book with the impact code or the actually book is coming out our source information from there but I do meander I go off on stories I'll go down a tangent like I am now or go off down one particular road won't stop and then a new idea will come to me or some will come in the room or a look at faces that I think they like that I'll carry on there and I found that the slides I was using or the any visual aids they were restricting me to a path. So that was the big step part I took at this networking event in Bristol and of course you can imagine how nervous I was and those little voice in my head was also saying you're going to get lost or whatever else they were saying but I did it and now that's the way I present Yeah and overall if you got that battery of things you can fall back on in your own memory I mean it gives a lovely relaxed flow doesn't it yeah it comes together it was meant when David Cameron was Perth for the Tory leadership against Davis and he went on stage without any notes and everyone was incredibly impressed at the time that you could address a conference without any notes it takes a little bit of. Steel to do that in the 1st place it does and quite often the foundation is immense preparation and planning and a sense of certainty that you know you're going to talk about I have a habit probably in the early hours of the morning of the day of a conference for 5 o'clock I stir in my sleep and I run through the conference in my mind and I don't judge myself I don't curse myself for doing that I just go through that for an hour or so drop back to sleep done it's almost like a pre Pax what I'm going to do few hours early Ok well let's talk about your new book which is called the keep it simple book 50 ways to uncomplicate your life and work this compact book contains practical tips and techniques to inspire and provoke you to review your life change old habits and enhanced sure life by keeping it simple and what's nice about the book is as you say very easy to digest and dip into very simple concept it's full of lovely inspirational quotes and bits and bobs about how you can simplify your life and a ringing endorsement from Leonardo da Vinci in chapter 19 simplicity is the ultimate sophistication I'm so glad he wrote that for me yes for several years but it sums up doesn't it I mean simplicity is simplicity is a form of sophistication refined sophistication isn't it it is and it takes guts Simplicity doesn't just happen because we're human beings the world. We live in now with everything's gone as I sit here in your studio with all this technology rep round us life is pretty complicated if I only Press 4 but then then you simplify that you are the Leonardo da Vinci of this room now each tip is a 50 in the book contains a lesson or exercise Tell me about the way the book is arranged well as it's 50 and you can read them in any particular dippin depart and I know that people who've read the book read a book they'll find half a dozen that they really like and they'll go back to them and refer to them and work with them all the time and when I'm in conference there's there's 4 or 5 that I need always use because they're my favorites 343 for example which apart from my favorite football formation which isn't played enough in the Premier League if you ask me 3 good proper center backs that go drifting up and down the wings anyway it's not about that 343 largely is if there were 10 things that you're involved in in your life where you work they'll be 3 you're brilliant at and 3 you're rubbish at. Realize it outsourced the rubbish ones pay someone stop doing them spend more time doing your top 3 because they're the ones that people say you're brilliant you'll get rewarded for your make faster progress and you have a nice time we should be top 3 we should mention the book isn't just aimed at business people anyone can take control of the lessons in the book as I mentioned there's a lovely quote and I highlighted a few this one here from Mother Teresa yesterday is gone tomorrow has not yet come we only have today let us begin and there's a big movement these days to live in the moment because people long for things they look forward to retirement or something in the future in a very sort of vague way but your life passes by You've got to enjoy right now haven't you you know people lose touch and in particular the business work I do people lose touch with now now is why now I'm talking to you Steve in this room I'm not thinking about the next meeting I'm going to I'm not thinking about this morning's meeting that perhaps did or didn't go very well and people lose touch with now and when they lose touch with now as you say they might be pinning all their hopes on their next holiday and losing the fun of this moment here and I notice it specifically people start not to see things that are going on so the concept of peripheral vision and peripheral vision that it's the stuff we see outside of our normal central focus point now that it's a metaphor a car that but when people are not in the now they're peripheral vision seems to narrow they don't notice their friend walking past a ministry they don't notice the 5 pound note that's lying in the bush at the corner it's real it's real stuff getting in the now takes practice yes I even big corporations you look at something that you think is solid as a rock like Facebook it has to keep an eye out doesn't it because there are always going to be other companies snapping at their heels and Facebook won't be around forever absolutely and in the news today we've got matter land and toys r us yeah. If you keep doing that they were probably in an old pattern and I don't know that much about it really think about it I have toys r us had really gone into online. An early stage they may or may well have been a genuine rival to someone like Amazon and if you got masochistic game us now we're going to analyze their business but those massive facilities they have around the country they potentially could be I don't know what the key be used what you could use it in different ways they could be toy experiences your children good about a great time wandering around these places as opposed to just being a warehouse full of boxes Yeah but the book is stacked tight with wonderful suggestions on how you can simplify your life he also touches on attitude and you mentioned the attitude but which I think you've already written but it's going to be published in the sun in the summer just tell me a bit about that because I do think it's key to your attitude you know it's a bit of a cliche but if you think you can do something well you probably will and if you don't you won't Yeah well that's Ford's The inventor of the or not even to the Creator the Ford Motor cars he once said that if you think you can you can you think you can't you can't you decide yes. And I notice and I got very passionate took me 18 months or so to sift through what I'm going to put into the attitude book and when you do that when you focus on one subject for a long period of time you get very close to it and I start to notice how attitudes show up I see on people's faces I can get a sense for what their attitude is about all sorts of stuff just by meeting people for a few minutes. And I notice as well now those attitudes are under attack from the press from the media from Facebook from all the inundation of how we should be how we might be this is going on it's pinging against our central attitude all the time and I think I think people their attitude slips and drifts before I know it I don't feel very great about things or themself but that sounds like a fascinating book is the attitude but which is going to be published later this year the a book that's just out is called the keep it simple book a couple of final quotes from Jimmy Duran the wonderful entertainer if you want the rainbow you gotta put up with the rain which is a lovely one and an old Chinese proverb In fact I think half the people working in the paddy fields in the other half in China were just writing Proverbs. The man who removes a mountain begins by carrying away small stones but that's again is about clearing things out of your life and that I suppose reflects the movement which is on at the moment the clattering really interesting to talk to today Simon thank you very much I can so much Richard thank you that is Simon Tyler you can find out more at his website which is Simon Tyler dot com all the books we mentioned are still available but the brand new book is called the Keep It Simple Book.
