Money the good funeral guide has sent a letter to all hospices up and down the country edging them to avoid a scheme which helps them launch their own funeral service it something said Margaret's hospice announced it was doing last month saying it felt like a natural step to take and would cater for families struggling to afford a funeral but from the whole editor of the good funeral guide thinks the link between hospices and funeral directors is working just fine as it is to come in and carry on that care that apparently now there is a care gap according to. The head of memorial which is the partner in hospice funerals he's identified something which we don't believe to exist we don't believe there's a cake at between the service at the hospice Crites and the service that 3 families get from funeral directors and sit Margaret's hospice says it believes it's disingenuous of the good funeral guide suggest is the got the best interests of hospice is the heart when it appears to be more concerned with protecting commercial interests of those who fear increased competition in the funeral markets some sense m.p. In little Granger is threatening to withdraw his support for the government in protest over proposed Council merger he's abstained in several crucial votes on Monday on the withdrawal bill he strongly opposed to plans to merge with some set and Taunton Dene councils which last week got provisional approval from the government our reporter pool ball drop says it's a bold move it's very extraordinary you know to define your party to defy your whips is always regarded as a very serious step to do it in a vote such as this just take us take us back to Monday this is the e.u. Withdrawal bill which is currently making its way through parliament that in itself is contentious there are lots of amendments that have been tagged onto it and the votes were taking place on Monday night the government so concerned whether about or even forbid ministers from being away there was one minister who's due to be away in Africa is an important event she was told You can't go you've got to be there until after midnight to take. These votes so they were all back that they voted the government got through just about the Won't that money vote center in Little Granger had told what he was going to be he wasn't a vote and duly he carried out his threat and the largest and most expensive warship ever built for the Royal Navy will officially join the service today the queen will commission the new Anna craft carrier h.m.s. That is still love watching around this time of year 50 I don't mind of a pain and then I don't know if you repeat is good and want to watch something good again if the summer is all for one exactly absolutely lousy show because it will repeat a show from a couple of weeks ago tomorrow saying I was happening on the road so the moment I'm 5833 looking good however because there's always a however which is a fantasy about the junction 225 just off about a 38 Bristol Road we do have a lane closed for gas mains work causing a few cubes in the area just be aware of that one anything else give me a corny 3453 or 3 being 60 next week we're reliving the entire Great Wellington walk for a week in there why not do you imagine if your only game come on will or was steady on now plant content and fresh P.V.C.'s salmon. Get in touch today comment on whatever you like don't forget you will be meeting a 72 year old Maurice and Ron a Burnham's all sorts of Forest Gump to tell you that's in the next 30 minutes but if you want to comment on whatever you like it so you 345-303-1566 text the word Somerset and then your message to each one trouble 3 now that the money department hospital in Taunton is responsible for the treatment of everything from cataracts to pluck but b.b.c. Somerset has learned that it has some of the longest waiting times in the entire hospital and that one woman suffered irreversible side loss because she had to wait 9 months before getting a checkup appointment after a double cataract operation now the hospital says it doesn't want to come out to talk to me about the case but in a statement it has said it's very sorry a patient suffered some loss of vision while waiting for a follow up appointment and that it has taken steps to help make sure this will not happen again Well joining me in the studio somebody who can talk about what else is going on. In the county in terms of people looking for support with site last check in with you see Chief Executive of the charity Somerset site good morning to you good morning thank you very much for coming in I know that obviously we don't have the fine details of this particular case is difficult to comment on but you know as as a as a case as a whole that is worrying isn't it of course it's always worrying when people lose sight and what we find is that sight loss can affect people all sorts of times and and it is always very distressing not only for them but also for their friends and family our experience of Musgrave is that they have a fantastic team out there and that they are doing a very very good job and sometimes as obviously quite difficult circumstances we work very closely with them and you know I have great admiration for their chief is this if you do speak to the hospital directly Don't you know we do we we work very closely with them there is a site loss advisor now in the clinic up in mass Grove and they are supported by Somerset site volunteers and the idea of the Site Advisor is that when people are waiting in the clinic they have somebody to talk to to tell them about the practical things that are available for people in the community the thing is about obviously they do all the all the clinical side but there needs to be and there is and it sort of interweaving between what happens on the clinical side and what is available in the community the people that do use your service I mean what did they tell you about their experiences at the hospital Well a lot of them have said that actually what has been achieved up at the hospital has been pretty short of a miracle and so I mean I have nothing but admiration for what they achieved up there and it's a very very busy clinic and they managed to do off a lot of good is fantastic what they're doing we spoke about waiting times earlier on in the program and that they ophthalmology Ward has some of the longest waiting times in the entire hospital from your experience of the number of people coming. T. Needing support would you say that issues with sites more and more people are experiencing the now unfortunately more and more people experience sight loss as part of the aging process we all understand the demographics of Somerset and as a result of that there are more and more people who do need support in the community and they find that support with people like Somerset site we can offer all sorts of gadgets and gizmos that people can use which help them remain independent in their own home and we also offer emotional support because at the time of diagnosis it is almost like a bereavement and it takes quite a long time to work through the emotions and to get through the stage of accepting what has happened and then actually going on to adapt and achieve all the sorts of things that you can achieve even though you're suffering from signs I suppose some people may only become aware of some set aside once they have had a diagnosis or once they have gone through treatment to many people come to you when they are still waiting to be seen by the hospital Oh yes a lot of people come to us during their treatment and also before their treatment because they're aware that you know things aren't quite as good as they could be and we have a mobile advisory service that goes around the whole of Somerset and that goes to 40 different destinations and enables people who are local to get the gadgets and gizmos and the support and information that they need and we also have a resource center in Taunton which has wonderful different technology and all sorts of computer assisted things and nowadays with with site loss there is so much more technology than there ever was in the past and that enables people to remain independent and also to maintain their. Lifestyle at home how can people get in touch with some south side we would love people to get in touch with us and that the number to call is 01823. 33818 and the other thing that we have is amazing volunteer visiting service this is support for people who with site loss in their own home and we have 180 matches across the whole of Somerset this is something that is amazing for people who have sight loss because it enables them to get out and about and also to be able to have somebody to read their correspondence and to help them with little activities at home that they find very difficult people also go out and have they go out for trips and we have many people who say that the volunteers that help with this are like their weekly ray of sunshine we are actually looking for more volunteers so if anybody is listening to this and would like to. Ring us and offer their services a volunteer either for the volunteer visiting service or to help us in other ways we'd be very interested in hearing from you thanks for coming in today really appreciate it thanks very much that's Jackie stop with the who is the chief executive of the Somerset light charity joining us live on breakfast It's exactly 30 minutes past 8 o'clock Good morning to you. Got an update on your headline news there on his b.b.c. Somerset has learnt a woman suffered irreversible loss of sight in one eye after her appointments Musgrave Park Hospital was delayed by 9 months but spire University's coming under fire this morning after accounts showed that its departing vice chancellor received 808000 pounds last year in pay and benefits and the largest and most expensive war ship ever built for the Royal Navy will officially join the service today when it's commissioned by the queen more from me at half past 8 thank you very much Vicki let's just talk more then on the situation in our say America but you kind of looking elsewhere as well now as the u.n. Secretary Council is expected to meet tomorrow to discuss president trumps decision to recognize Jerusalem as the capital of Israel the sessions being called by Britain France and 6 other member countries critical of Mr Trump's announcement until now there's been an international agreement to keep embassies in Tel Aviv because of the disputed status of Jerusalem between Israelis and Palestinians our Arab leaders have warned it could provoke violence in the Muslim world so how significant could this move be Rosemary Hollis is the professor of international relations at City University and an expert on the Middle East joins me now good morning to you. Good morning so why is President Trump doing this in the 1st place I think the main reason has to be that all his predecessors had promised to do it at some point appropriate point but not carried through and as he made his announcement yesterday he boasted effectively that unlike all his predecessors he was carrying through on his election promises so it was principally directed at a domestic audience and included in the domestic audience is the vice president Mike Pence who is amongst those who take a Christian fundamentalist view on Jerusalem and have very much wanted this move to be made just remind people briefly if you can why do recent Misaka disputed place. Well it's the heartland of the 3 great monotheistic religions if people imagine a picture of Jerusalem they probably imagine the beautiful blue mosque with the golden dome that should tell you it's holy to Muslims as well as to Jews and Christians it is also of course the place where Christ spent most of his life or much of his life and of course was crucified and so there are Christian holy sites all over Jerusalem there are this the main Muslim holy site the 3rd holiest Muslim site and there is the Western whoa which is a sole remaining wall of the temple which is holy to Jews and the Israeli government since capturing the eastern half of the city which includes the old city with the holy sites since capturing that in 1967 has an extent that eastern part that they captured and that is not recognized under international law when Trump stands on this is not entirely clear from his statement he doesn't talk about east and west Jerusalem and he does say that he's still open to that to be negotiations over the status of the city but effectively he's privileged the Israeli side over the Palestinian who he didn't mention and talk to do you think that other countries then were funny so you start moving their embassies so do you think America will be alone in this. Well that's what's at stake here and why the Security Council has to get involved is this is flouting international law after the $967.00 capture of East Jerusalem the u.n. Security Council passed Resolution 242 which said this occupied land had to be retired and to those for whom it was captured it was actually who was in control of the eastern half of the city and that therefore until undergo c.-h. It solution to the future of the city has been reached the position of the Security Council is that it's illegal for Israel to be there to populate East Jerusalem as well as the rest of the West Bank and therefore the embassies should not recognize Israel's claim that it's Jerusalem all of it belongs to them Ok thank you very much for your time this morning that is Rosemary Hollis there who is a professor of international relations at City University reacting to President Trump's decision to move the American embassy to Jerusalem you can read up plenty more on the b.b.c. News website we're almost at 7 a day date seeing it when you get it wrong that's going in the blue things for the Christmas party tomorrow you just know it Daniel thank you for. The messages they're coming through. Honestly this makes Andy Bennett cry says the one Christmas so he does it just bugs me my is going on. Says beautiful voice as he shoots it is. Just been asking you about the t.v. You know we want you around this time of year in the paper and we don't want to see repaid spine. Good morning play around in a team we like to watch a Christmassy feel good film counting down to the festive period of the week before . Christmas usually Harvie the want to bout the big friendly man rabbit It's a Wonderful Life and for my dad whiskey going to all my favorites the holiday I love the holiday. And Love Actually it's always good to see new things t.v. That's good quality not all those seventy's repeat some are now on so they're not p.c. And really dated are nice Let's get some new stuff on so it's a year that you told the new mom I love a good Christmas have a great day Irene thank you very much I rain let me know that if you normally watch around this time of year anything good that you seen of late of yet to see Paddington to I'm hearing very very good things about it to the point where lots of people said that they cried at that too. So some emotional is needy see some sense Simon Parkin Now did you know with your other half that they were indeed mourning Rosemary card games I met him Daisy gave each other one of offer to take people did he share those dates with you just out of interest really because. Like you know when something in hockey got together and we are it would be naive to think that what I love is the sort that every time you see a book subject she in a b. C. And c. Think it is you know you can judge they're going to look a bit old wrinkled man on the Sony leading the touch not what we think of a sign and came back this morning from 9 on b.b.c. Somerset 824 they say that everything you ever wanted to know about yourself you can learn in 26.2 miles Well I don't know what this lady's learn about herself but she certainly had time to think about it I think most of us would be pretty pleased at ourselves one way if we were to run just one marathon in our life well for soon Nichols from Burnham Oh my word she is incredible I think she's completed 13 marathons this year she's done close to 30 in the last 2 years I think and has been running them ever since she started around 9 years ago but we're. She's been given now as this very special medal because she's tackled taken on and completed 6 of the world's biggest actually might be 7 of the world's toughest marathons as they say I want to meet a one at Burnham yesterday to meet up with so lovely lady. The main point here Sue is 72 years of age she's extraordinary she's absolutely extraordinary So it's amazing sit down with her and learn a bit more every time I do London I've done 6 times so far. Cancer research have raised probably about 15000 what do you think your husband would make rule of this I guess he'd be very proud of it probably would never believe that I could do it did you believe that you could do it when I started out wasn't not ambitious I just wanted to do the the one race and race you know what I could at the time but I kind of enjoyed it and things progressed so now you know I just keep going as long as my health holds up then. How are you feeling in yourself you know age 72 let's be honest you know body isn't what it used to be but clearly it's not that bad but it's not that but you get a few niggles and aches and pains probably more now than when I 1st started but you work through it have a sports massage and go again if you've adventurous and got a little bit of ambition you know a set of a goal and you work towards it so when you have got marathon looming when you do have that big race coming up what is the the regime and in terms of training and nutrition I usually follow a 16 week training plan where you question free she distance this as far as diet and that kind of thing goes up I eat well lots of protein all the usual stuff and jellyfish but yet training you just follow a plan and get through it. When you reach everybody talks about the wall don't they that mental rule wall that you reach what makes you break through to be quite honest I've never actually hit a wall. Actually human. Yes I think the will is obviously something in your mind isn't it mainly I always set out once you start you put one foot in Percy other until you get to the end my philosophy so I never really hit a wall I just just keep going until I see the finish line talk to us about this incredible medal which you have now been given Yes when you've done 6 major world marathons then you can apply for this special 6th on medal so you know you send in all you details of your races new times and they verify the more than and then they send you a nice large metal it is beautiful you got it on the wall in your conservatory What did it feel like to get that through the post exciting Yes really get it was to scrape. So your son's your son's move that they had it made for me last Christmas supernovae. Love what we saw which just today when. I 1st set of metal and then I got that one because I was 1st lead category. That Boston. Has made has to be there and I got the bass. If we were. Close enough. As a London man. Our guest host here and that led. To believe and then this incredible. Book World Marathon majors you know many of these get given not a lot yeah. Yeah yeah the heritage is a great relatively small running club it got about 50 members at the moment but we're all very friendly. Socially on the Tuesday night and then he just makes the training as and when that speech kind of thing but yes it's just good little running crepes you best of luck feel story marathons next year any sign of calling it a day I just keep going until something told me to stop water lady soon Nichols thank you very much for 72 years of A's age she has just run I Bachao she has run so many Morrisons of the years I've been alive extraordinary stuff a big hello to the Burnham Harriers as well thanks very much to sue for talking to me best of luck with her 3 marathons next year including some of the toughest in the world getting ready to run along with right with China as she's just she's doing it all as she's raising money for charity as well Claire Carter brought 1st good morning t.v. Has learned a woman suffered irreversible loss of sites in one eye after her appointment at Musgrave Park Hospital was delayed by 9 months the Taunton hospital says it worked hard to reduce waiting times an ophthalmologist and has investigated this case including taking steps so it won't happen again this fresh controversy over the pay of senior academics after the merged the birth by university paid its departing vice chancellor Professor Christina slate just over $800000.00 pounds last year in pay and benefits the University and College Union says such high figures make senior staff seem greedy and out of touch experts are meeting at the Royal Bath Anwesha ground today to try and find ways to reduce the amount of antibiotics is a given to animals the conference will talk about concerns that more and more bugs are becoming resistant to certain treatments something they say could lead to a global crisis and the queen is the guest of honor at the commissioning of the Royal Navy's new aircraft carrier today which is the largest and most expensive warship ever built for the Navy h.m.s. Queen Elizabeth will officially join the service at a ceremony in Portsmouth and look at the weather pretty damp and so be to start off with this morning but it is feeling mild at least that band of heavy blustery rain clearing away during this morning that means the south and looking a bit brighter but it's going to be much colder with it a chance some sleet showers by the sea evening at the higher ground such as x. The festive stain you see . In the next half hour as well we are talking a hospice is starting up the funeral companies or business is still plans. For patients to sign up for is it right or wrong we continue this debate in a few moments time will speak to someone parking see what he's gone away after 9 o'clock for you. And more of your messages as well coming through on hospital waiting times for the ophthalmology Department thanks for your experiences and. You see some I do appreciate those you can always e-mail into at Summerset at b.b.c. Doc dot u.k. So than it has been a month since Margaret hospice signed up to a new scheme to deliver funeral services but already the move is being criticized by experts who say it could cause massive damage to their reputation with a good funeral guide who's written to all of the country's 191 hospices urging them not to sign up the same venture the guides editor is Fran hall she was on the program earlier on this morning I think initially when we 1st heard this about this for considering planning to open field in Taunton we were a bit surprised because there are already a number of you know directors in the town that we just thought that maybe they stuck identified a need and they came to fulfill but then we became aware that there was going to be a nationwide low. Take hold and that was a very glitzy presentation where all the system would know hundreds and hundreds of dead. Some hospices all around the country where there were given a very persuasive sell the idea of becoming a part of a franchise operation and we felt that this was some things that perhaps hard pressed fundraisers of hospices everywhere would think was a really good idea and we decided we wanted to put food some council tenants which we believe to be very valid the reputation of the hospice is very much at risk so that's become part of the franchise operation which is making money for a very slick corporate crime to Tory a company in the background we felt was perhaps not in keeping with the hospice movement so we just wanted to write to the trustees around the country and give them our point of view how it Hodgson is the chief executive of memoria which is working with the moderates to deliver the funeral service Howard joins me now thanks very much for being on the program Good Morning goes through then how you feel about this letter that's going out. Well I mean they have every right to write the letter I think in fact the situation is that we wouldn't be we were invited originally by some markets to join them and to apply some funeral expertise into their plans because they were concerned if you remember in. 2016 the parliamentary select committee reported that in fact for 25 years running the cost of dying and being higher than the cost of living the cost of funerals had risen by 112 percent in the last 13 years by 71 percent in the last 10 years where over that time breaded gone up by 15 percent and wages by only 20 percent so the smugglers are concerned about one rounding the circle to make sure that they've been looking for years after the dying and their families and then the those families are coming back as bereaved The one thing that was missing was the funeral and they were concerned about the cost of dying and people going into debt and they wanted introduce more choice more affordability and more transparency and on hospices I think you know need to raise about 75 to 85 percent of their funds in the cases and Margus that's $12000000.00 pounds a year and they can do this by actually introducing this valuable services it is a commercial service and because they need to raise the money but they're also the clothes shops their furniture shops their. Charity shops except for the sale of Christmas cards all of these things raise money that is needed so when they took a survey 82 percent of the public thought it was a very good idea. That they should be entering the market they came to us to supply that expertise in the market because we have over 90 years experience and we when we were invited to go and talk to the Department of. Works and Pensions about the price of philos we started our own company called low cost. Which is advertised on television 2 introduced fixed plans. Both at the time of the funeral prearranged plan to give more choice more affordability and more transparency is not the same as markets and therefore we found it easy to join together with this letter is actually quite critical about a couple of things including the potential damage to the hospice's reputation in fact because this partnership a white label operation maximizing the use of the hospices brand name and accusing you of being calculated in cynical those are the words you. Well I don't respond to I mean look I'm quite surprised that anyone could say that especially the good funeral guy does actually all 7 cram a Tory were finalists this year we were the crematorium of the year and in fact I for 2 years running of being in fact nominated and been run is up a runner up for a lifetime achievement award and low cost funerals going runner up in $2.00 awards as well so in fact before this happened they thought we were very ethical very good and at the top of our game and profession so I find it a good funeral guide is supposed to be there actually helping the public and they seem to have actually been in the situation of being very concerned on behalf of funeral directors if this service when you can kind of understand because to use it you can and like is here's another funeral directors have come back and said and they are supposed to give funeral guide earlier on in the show and they said that actually the response that happened this letter from other hospices is that they wouldn't go along with this they don't agree with it well if they don't they're right isn't it will have to wait and see whether they do. Something like this let me just say one thing to you you know in a free market economy if I'm introducing services that are more affordable. More transparent and in fact giving people more choice and that actually is a success then that has got to be to the good of the public that's not a bad thing so how much profit is your company going to make out of this partnership then but I absolutely have no idea but remember because in fact it hasn't started yet but let me tell you this it is a joint venture and very much in fact a lot of that money will be going back to support the hospices. And to the fact that we've had over 70 expressions so far of interest from from hospices who actually wants to think this is a good ethical idea and the only criticism with this from funeral directors and because obviously they have a vested interest they don't want more competition in the market and by the way if there was a bit more competition in the market then perhaps in fact these prices wouldn't have been going up by a 112 percent in 13 years how it thank you very much for your time Howard Haas and the chief executive of memoria joining us live on breakfast any thoughts on what you just heard 345303 things 66.
