Cricket. Blackwell and Charlie Taylor b.b.c. Somerset. Hello and welcome to the cricket show it's Charlie Taylor with you through until 7 o'clock I'm joined by former Somerset captain and England player in Blackwell believe in Charlie Good evening everyone and tonight on the show we'll hear from the players opened up about his addiction to cocaine that's a powerful interview coming up later there's also the reaction to a heavy defeat for western style in their 1st game in this year's Women Super League and we'll hear from Jim Allonby He's been speaking to us about leaving the club after the season but 1st let's look back at the county jump ship much which finished yesterday Somerset took full bonus points in the match which ended in a draw Steve Davis Tom Abel and Don best impressed with the bat with best then taken his 5th championship 5 after yesterday's match director of cricket may not spoke to b.b.c. Somerset's commentator Anthony Gibson stalemate in the end but you can take quite a lot out of this game Yaz most. Obviously about him to get 400. In the 1st and something. I'm into the whole year so now that was nice obviously and then you know on a fairly dose I'll work it. Out for Bowen points and. Salary. 343 was I thought was a great effort given what he's been through the return to form for Tom able particularly heartening Yeah I think he found his form back in the 2 used to be honest and very good innings and obviously he's then brought up form into this game and you know coming in on the hattrick and applying himself as he did was great is probably more like the mobile of old in that you know it was a very calm at the crease and just picked pick the Bibles to pick off I thought he looked really good so yeah great to see him play in ngs like that with 5 to go talking about players of old Steve Davis as well. I didn't you know I don't know I'm not more like the player of old I meant I wasn't being a just very true. Yeah and I played a lovely not in the you know and again I suppose you know in both both those cases you know in a way when you come to a new county you you know want to try and impress and sometimes probably just try a little bit too hard and in Tom's case you know with the captaincy maybe just trying to bit too hard to impress with his batting but we all know the quality of both players and great to see them perform in this game and don't pass in the championship so far he's got an absolutely sensational record we should rename the owners board I think the best board is every time he plays at the moment he's on and he's in a great run of form I'd just like the way he goes about his stuff you know. During the 2nd evening of the match he sat and. Was talking to Gareth batty about spin bowling and chatted for at least an hour I'm normally the last to leave but I left those 2 to. That for me just barely. And to see that song wants to learn wants to pick up and not everything everyone will say will ring true to him but he picks up little snippets things can add to his game and it's got that drive and that focus to not just kind of learn from himself but to try and use the experience of other players around him and you know great that guy with Patti would pass on some information to him as well and I know they thought enjoyed each other's company on the 2nd go back to t 20 again this weekend doubleheader and Dean Elgar are returning Yeah we've just got to get him out of test mode into t 20 road and if you did witness his practice today we've got quite a lot of work to do. So we're going to we've got to you know got a good practice tomorrow lined up and obviously then you can have a hit prior to the match and indoor school but you know that transformation of mindset of being tighten your game for the last you know 5 weeks 6 weeks around the Test matches and you know very watchful in defense you know is going to flip that totally. All out aggression you know that's the way we look to play in this t 20 campaign and Dean showed through the one day games out he is very very effective player in the white ball game and it's just a case of him just getting that mines which as I say into the ultra positive mode and I'm sure he'll do that at the head of this weekend's games that's Somerset's director of cricket match may not speaking to our commentator Stephen lan Somerset remains 2nd from bottom in the table just 20 points behind Middlesex with 5 games to go now that is definitely a space which can be caught up in how do you see the rest of the season going yeah it is difficult to call because service a near last year where Somerset were struggling and sort of bottom off the table then all of sudden they they went 5 games on the trot and you know nearly won it and it's difficult but I don't see things going quite as well as it did last year. Obviously they've got to take each games that comes they're all massive games are all Cup finals if they can win 3 they've got a pretty good go at it and they're relying on Middlesex probably 2 other really but sort went to the season we'll hear from in a moment he's speaking about the fact his contract has made him a new deal to talk about the team feeling unsettled would you say just from looking at it from the outside that you can see the signs of that on the pitch I think he can and I think you can see signs of frustration I think certainly with the way Championship cricket gone this year whether big did up too much and I thought Somerset really should be one in the late this year and it's difficult to put your finger on it and whether Tom's influence as captain is sort of maybe of come too soon for him and his form state massively it's good to see him back in the runs but yeah it's just been a difficult season and you know we've got a few personnel change that I think is a few people even so the must be a little bit of unrest but where it goes you know where we're not the powers that be well it's an interesting result Middlesex last Middlesex are terrible run just looking that they can't seem to get a good batting display together which could come very much to Somerset's help considering the last game of the season Taunton sunset against Middlesex we thought it might be the final to see who wins the lake it could be the one which decides relegation it's tantalizing to think what I mean sank you very much in we'll be back with you very shortly You're listening to b.b.c. Somerset's cricket show coming up next we're hearing from Jim Allen who's been speaking to us about not having his contract renewed at Somerset coming up in just a moment. You listen to the critique show with me in Blackwall and Charlie Taylor last week b.b.c. Somerset brought the news that while Captain Jim Allen beat will be leaving the club at the end of the year yet the club is yet to confirm the news but in an exclusive interview Jim told me Somerset has made it clear to him halfway through the t 20 season that his contract will not be renewed at the end of the year this time is always difficult I think orcas tends to be a month that there's a huge amount of change. And I've. Got which obviously isn't great news personally that but I'm not going to be sort of part of the plans going forward or are going to assume that I'm not sort of going to be at a club past the season. Yes so it wasn't obviously great news to get. But it's you know you've got to respect the club's wishes and the decision and. I think it was you know explained to me it was it was just a basic club's priorities lie with 4 day cricket. Clubs one day captain and have done well and that it sort of considered that for a career as an I guess been my strength and the club's going to really look to prioritise that going forward so. That the things they might do feel is a bit unfair saying he's not as a as a 1st class player. It's not something that I would necessarily agree with out certainly agree that my performance is Somerset went to strong as they were it Morgan in Leicestershire. I think for various reasons and I think that I am of the opinion last year actually quite a good 1st class season in a minute you know to refute Lee exciting and successful season 4 for some us as a whole especially in chairmanship and 50 over cricket I feel like a contributed quite a lot yeah it's probably not something I grew even told in the middle of the t 20 season I mean does that affect the way that you can lead a club knowing that you're you know going to be even be the next season. I had sent a not a perfect situation it sounds it's just as well I'm quite stubborn I guess yes I look I'm going to I'm going to be doing everything I can to try and win this comp for various reasons I take my job very seriously and I'm. And I'm the captain I was given the option to not lead the team anymore if it's something I didn't feel I could do. That decision took me 30 seconds to decide that. I'm the best got to do it in my opinion I think it's going going well he said that the clubs now prioritizing Red Bull cricket from from next season seeing that as its main concern does that mean they'll be other players who are more white ball players who he may see depart the club in the coming months I think if you look at the stuff and the recruiting of overseas players it's certainly quite quite biased towards towards what I cricket saw I don't think it's something new going into next season I think it's just. Maybe a strong emphasis potentially as for other players. I would have to imagine that that is the case. Everyone I guess around can speak for themselves as to the city they're in but it would be a shame from my point of view to say some of those guys go because I think we're seeing at the moment in t 20 cricket like we've seen in 50 over cricket for 2 years we have some very very skilful and talented wattle cricketers at the club who don't always play for a cricket abis perform as a sometimes guys who are any playing when they create because it means I can actually focus on their skill so I think it would be a shame to lose that and to lose some of the momentum we've built up but as I say it's a decision that's any out of my hand so I hope there's some measures in place to make sure we continue the momentum we've we've built over the last couple is that. From a from a player retention or or not point of view I guess it would stand to reason that that everyone soon it will be. Will be in a position where they might you know there might be a good. Tyrant performing like I feel I am and it's out of their control whether they get stone or some of that's why Paul Captain Jim Allen be there we have asked to speak to the club about this no one was available to do that they did however put a statement on the club website which I'll read a bit from now it's said Somerset County Cricket Club will not comment on player contract discussions that is a confidential matter between the individual and the club for absolute clarity no formal or definitive decisions have been taken with the regard to the future composition of the playing squad of 2018 that is premature with a major part of the current season still in progress and a great deal to play for Secondly the club's cricketing priorities are very clear to play high quality competitive cricket in all formats and to assemble a squad to achieve that consistently each season the club is committed to its policy of retaining and developing homegrown talent while supplementing the core of our squad with players of world class caliber from the domestic and international markets in what do you make of what Jim was talking there and the timing of this. Like he said it it's not ideal. But I think when guys are up on their contracts I think it's only fair to give them a suitable amount of time and notice that you know their lives are going to be turned upside down as it were and they're going to need fun new home in a new job and definitely new clubs so it's difficult I think players have been there know exactly what what it is. August is always a tricky time with contract negotiations because you you sort of worried about that especially if you performances not been there so I can see the club's understanding of it and whether rightly or wrongly or timing wise isn't great but obviously it's certainly something that the players need to be aware of in case you need to funnel accounts in rock and a hard place for some of that isn't it do you do you not tell them until you know the moment that they have an out of contract or do you give them that breathing space time to perhaps find another contract like you say it's hard in the middle of a season like that we talked a bit about it earlier Jim says there's the club is unsettled. Perhaps because of this championship poll form that they've had at the start here perhaps because of these contracts coming now how does someone set focus on the games and try and move on from what's happening off the pitch it is difficult think but you can hope that the players are professional like Jim said yeah there's certain worries and issues among But if you've got to find another county you've got to do your damnedest to put the runs and work it's on the board in order to you know it's your shop window if you like and yes it's fine if there's people with you know 15 year careers or 10 year careers beyond and people know what they can do but for the young lads that sort of game released or guys without much 1st team experience it's much for them than you know the bigger player that probably monetary wise it's the right decision for the club and I came into some of course keep you up to date with what happens at the club as far as this is concerned here on the cricket show up next we'll be hearing from Reef He's the former Somerset coach he's been speaking to the b.b.c. About his cocaine addiction you're listening to the cricket show on b.b.c. Science and that's coming up after this. Roxy Music You're listening to the cricket show on b.b.c. Somerset's with me Charlie Taylor and Ian Black Well coming up we'll put Weston super Mare cricket club under the floodlights finding out what makes them tick and hear about their upcoming match against Somerset and we'll also hear from Heather night after a I think fair to say disastrous start for them to the Women's Super League season for West and still we're about to hear from Dermot Reeves the former Somerset coach who signed me to the club back in 2000 we went on a common take for he went on to compensate for b.b.c. Channel Channel 4 actually was after resigning after admitting he took cocaine before going on air in 2004 since then his marriage had broken down and found himself in financial difficulties earlier this year he sold his limited edition Whiston on your own from 996 when he was named Cricketer of the year you know it's been a big fall from grace for don't read he's been speaking to the B.B.C.'s Annie Mitchell And just as a warning there are references to drug abuse in this interview you know I made a stupid mistake one day I was. Thinking that if I if I took a lot of cocaine it wouldn't. Be something that would you know ruin my life or you know get out of control but I fortunately you know did. My world spiral through a place you know quite a dark place where you know I lost my job and I lost my marriage and and. So and this is when you're working with Channel 4 wasn't it in the commentary box Yeah yeah so if anyone's listening out there you know don't make that that error of thinking all this just be something that isn't that isn't such a big deal you know just taking a drug and unfortunately I've got a personality I guess that that. You know I couldn't stop so. In fact at that time I remember you that effectively holding your hand up and sort of confessing a space and saying yes I did do that I have been taking cocaine What do you recall of that time and if you like taking that decision to sort of come they come clean to say yes this is what I've been doing I've got I've got some difficulties. At the time I thought it was a good thing because I thought that now it's at the Open and now I'm going to doing is music to get clean and you know. He'll be a good step for my life and it needs to be done so you know I tried to view it in that way but you know I used to sit next to Richie Benaud it was a job you know commentating on England matches and you know I have there was a wonderful you know job to have. You know I just remember one day someone playing a cover drive at Old Trafford you know and I'm calm and said I'm going all wonderful cover drive up at the mike down and I remember putting my I thinking. You know so someone else could do this job it's not that important you are not saving the world I should be out in Africa helping Bono and the charities and you know that they might that might sound like a wonderful job to do but basically the cocaine it's like it hijacks you soul. And it steals your reality so you know I went from being in a you know in a wonderful position financially secure with a fantastic job. So losing my grounding on you know on the world or on life so it was. Yeah it's people who've experienced it I guess but you know the drug ends up ruling your life you know he becomes sadly becomes your best friend you know and he's he's it's like it just takes over what what you what you're thinking about all or what your values are your ideas all. And you know you waste a lot of money and you lose a lot of friends and you know good good it's good now that I've you know still got a really good relationship with my children you know I'm in such them every day and I go to see them when I can and Sidney. You know sadly making that missing that mistake of. Trying to Ok that you know at that time my life was was the worst you know the worst thing I ever did. Those Channel 4 days were back sort of around about 2005 and I was working with you at the time I bring you your coffee in the commentary box is a rock band don't you know and yeah then you were one of the sharpest most vibrant commentators then as well you know after that that period how long did cocaine stay in your life for and are he completely clean of it now yes I'm clean of being clean for over 4 years now. But it's still you know I wouldn't want to be put in. In its in its company I would want to put myself in a situation where where I was around because you still. You still I guess have you know you know you've got that addictive personality and . You know it still comes up it's hard to you know in my head I still have to deal with it you know you walk into or you know you walk into a bathroom for example and. Or you see a color white and you get a trigger of Ok you can you know you go to a certain suburb where you know you may have had a party once upon a time or you know and your brain remembers it and you've got to deal with it. And you know stay clean by. You know meditating not medicating. Don't remove the former Somerset coach speaking to the B.B.C.'s Alan Mitchell. If he signs you from to Somerset when he was coach So what was he like as a coach excellent Yeah. Forward thinkin it always put the emphasis back on the player. It always make you think you'd be sat on the balcony and players daydream to do crosswords to do all sorts and then he'd just nudge and say $100.00 Suffield and he was. Right and then he'd throw a left hand and he goes that he got run out or something like that we said was you 4 ball you know something he was always trying to get you thinking about cricket trying to be better than you know just just been sat there and you know for me I really enjoyed his coaching style and he did a lot of good things at the club were you aware of any drug abuse at that time when he was Somerset No none whatsoever I mean for me I was you know early twenty's and you know just just living life down in Somerset and you know new club and yeah you thought it was a bag centric perhaps but you know that was just his character and you know mines and Aizen you know whether it is spiritual not even talks about wanting to save the world and you know do things like that but you don't know how serious he sort of is you know a change room is full of different people with different ideas and you know until people actually got and do things you know show what they're capable of and so were you surprised because it was quite public wasn't his is fall from grace when he was commentating for Channel 4 and me to taking cocaine before going on the air with them you must've been aware of it at the time and seeing this person you knew going through what was a pretty horrible time yeah I think everyone was shocked to be perfectly honest certainly drug related in cricket we obviously all get drug tested and you know it's not the done thing and he found out very very quickly if that's going on and so I think back then as well you know a lot of things um come out you know stress related illnesses and you know people have in psychology like problems of the mind and you know. It's just a different world back then so anyone brave enough to come out and sort of a bit like what trusted in 6 something along those lines and it's a big big step to take but I think now there's a lot of things in place with a p.c.i.-e. And you know the c b there are organizations out there to help you know encourage you to if you have problems that there's help out there and if you are someone who thinks you need help on that do get in touch with us on numbers 034-530-3156 extension 6 we can point you in the right direction 27 minutes to 7 o'clock now let's get the latest news headlines.
