Charts in 1988 and this was the jewel 2nd big hit in the United States after Chains of Love in the u.k. It was their 5th time in the top 10 Any ideas who it is and what the song might be still got some more clues to come. To Spandau Ballet 9. She's going. To Lose. Last. One of. Those on. The. Go. Wow. Wow. Did you know that. This song is a speech of James. Quite well of in the end didn't they from the album true back in 1983 go to number 2 in the house as well great we've got some. Way. To take that as well plus on the show today Jane from his pop in to talk about the tourists. Step up at you. It is you know we always go away don't we to these far flung places we go to Morocco in movies are all there tourist attractions but how often do we visit the tourist attractions right here on our doorstep we're going to be talking about a great residence weekend which is happening today right here in the West Country Plus also talking to the Rotary Club of chippin Sabri as well they've got their family walk and treasure hunt on today and so the whole lot so much happens with over the last week as well of course coming up this Thursday life from Wells Cathedral me and Steve again to be there along with Mark Allen from the Antiques Road Show the wells time choir and hopefully you with an item that's got a little story connected to it is going to be fun Minya both on the team as well as Cathedral this Thursday from 12 through till 2 a do who can come and say hello if you've often wondered what it looks like and come on if he really is safe he's just that what you do in a. Steve come on in what are you doing here this time of the morning. Well I thought I had to tell listeners yet to show what I was just maybe she wasn't I'm just here in this to 3 you don't know about no I want everyone to know about the show on Thursday also do not so this time on a Sunday morning well people important broadcaster I mean the basic My career is on the line and if the show's no good and as you know I've done bad ones in the past terrible ones it's going to be curtains but this is a great idea for a show modest yet it's on the cathedral green in front of that beautiful West Front absolutely fabulous I don't want anybody climbing up that west front I want to point out please I know it's tempting you know graffiti in either none of that place you want to nice peaceful event and what we want is listeners to bring along personal objects that mean something to them to have a story connected to them could be anything could be a worthless pebble you picked up on holiday something your grandparents gave you a little love token something you found under a floorboard any little object that's got a story connected to it only to bring that love token you gave me you have a lot time ago to tell that story oh no I'm toast Yeah but it's not the Antiques Roadshow but instead of bringing valuable objects we want people to bring objects it just have a story or a bit a meaning connected to them could even be tucked in the young and so in that case if we step on it by mistake it doesn't matter we want to drop in and hit base going to be a lovely event I understand the weather is going to be sensational because all this year Mark Allen finances roaches for the well staying quiet he's going to bring his belt and Martin of course will be my security if anyone starts a ruckus you'll break it out what are you and people often wonder what we look like if they've never seen as what they're going to be disappointed on one layer but it's going to be a lovely event this Thursday the whole show me and Martin live from the cathedral green wells come along and bring it bits and bobs only small so we don't want to drop zone and 12 to kill it next right here on this show my tour of Wells Cathedral Oh that's after this. It's what Steve is he's a troublemaker. This The fabulous all the moves that you know we linked up with the back in 2012 as you just heard from the incredible what Steve I was doing a cd I was doing it I don't know but he's very excited when he can sleep because this Thursday as he mentioned we all come in to work a teacher Well I'm very lucky because of all the other little toll I want to get a little inside scoop on a wet 2 Wells Cathedral I'm at the fabulous car a long form birth welcome to us cathedral water beautiful place is what it is absolutely stunning Yes very happy working here steeped in history it is indeed yes fine example of Gothic architecture and the whole place is just full of amazing treasures What is it like to work here than it is a radio here is very busy very very popular the tourists and got some lovely people working here is I'm from this a magical kingdoms that you will come to f e j in just the least of glorious amazing little treasures whether a piece of an old dollar or a piece of stained glass or a coffin you never noticed before and I bet you can work it for 50 years and still not see everything and be surprised by something every day I can imagine so yes and every time I have a meeting with one of the head verges here there seems to be a new tool that he can I know just gazing into the most amazing corridors and spiral staircase. Says that I work in the Harry Potter's world I can imagine they were very excited because this state we came in live from was Cathedral the Steve Jobs in show 12 through til 2 we want people to come along with a special to them militarily worthless but priceless to the us that's got to love the idea and we're very happy to have you here and we'll be joined by Mark as well for months he's Rocher fantastic and also Lee Well stunning quieter he is always a style he's quo Oh well known charismatic celebrity in the world there is no he's indeed yes I think he has his own chick fil a fan club as well and we go through a big door also on the other side of this door so in Harry's the entrance to the federal. You are greeted by a lot of the ladies who show you into the main cloisters taking you into the neighing let's call it more news that we got glass sliding doors you don't expect from a cathedral No this part of that is referred to as the new and cloister because it was only built a few years ago to quote the more than most of the old girl everything seems to work well together it does contrast beautifully Yes and it just as last of a little bit of extra convenience for visitors as well let's go inside and this is nice and just as we go inside lots of information posters on the wall next to you actually try to let office just know a bit about the history and then also inside we have lots of free daily guided and fixed a special interest as well so our guys just know so much about this place they're amazing they just bring the whole place and I mean this is not just a place of worship as it is in fact it's a tourist destination it is indeed yes we do welcome to hundreds of thousands of visitors here every year and they look to see the swarms Warner Yes yes they are quite a lot of time here and then pop next door to Bishop's Palace as well to say hello to one of these lovely welcome ladies Hello there Martin how you or your career have you got to talk facts you can tell me about well. That's the risk that to me not just the architect of something that's as well as the architect or should I watch this very peaceful when you get inside sometimes I was a bit noisy there a lot or some there are more for tourists who occasionally have a tear in the Orca British very nose but any occasion I love even at the cathedral for yourself over since 1995 Of course my husband was one of the last intake when the average college to be a German theological carnage so he was back and there are different times he came back or pretty close to be where you prefer and you enjoy it I do or I was a stranger to the place when I became But I'm not a stranger and him or not he will thank you for making me feel so welcome that you for your welcome we're going to make our way down here it's worse than a free absolutely yes I will just go through and I'll take you through pilgrims fortunate these homes the West cloister and then through the main factor in a very very friendly and everyone they are all team are absolutely amazing and yes the latest the front desk make you feel very very welcome. To the cathedral and then as you walk into the patron again you see the beautiful poem churchyard of how sometimes reflect a momentary peace of quiet and then you enter the name which is one of the highlights of most cathedrals but in wells I think it takes a special might be a bit biased but it is something most of Harry Potter isn't that when you walk through it is completely and through and you see these small mediæval wooden door with by the sides the Rockies are taping them up when you walk inside the most amazing instance spiral staircases take you up into towers I'm also up into the trifle room level you can see right so. It's a very magical place well what. Afterwards So welcome back to the martyrdom show on the b.b.c. Across the west we're very excited because this Thursday the Steve Jobs show 12 to 2 is coming alive from waltz Cathedral I'm going to be with him as well so it's more common Fransisco chose the well stay choir and hopefully you're going to join us as well for a fabulous afternoon with Caroline inside the cathedral I was standing just outside the library we are indeed yes it's my favorite parts in the cathedral you know side and you have to love the atmosphere you stay in the spiral staircase taking you up there but also inside is a change a library one of any form a new country and it has a fascinating question of books in it very very precious. As well that will the same virus mess really so yes that you have his signature and annotation we can put upon selected you know you couldn't. Or it would be a very very high one if you. Bring up this. What we want you to do is bring items along with monetary worthless but say you they mean something they've got a wonderful story connected to them and they're absolutely parser so well with. This coming Thursday we go through a huge door and we go to war in the staircase a space away up. And. Inside the library no could be sawed in front of us and so as a last case. But I'm sure that one of our historicity also you all about it and yes it's one of the many treasures to know artifacts that are displayed all over the cathedral from the altar cloth. Yet apparently library this down in the range which of books we've got Michael here is well behind the big desk in the library. Very well indeed but this is really something which I didn't expect it's quieter than usual happening we've had people all over the world here today well for at least from Europe. France and Germany in particular can you tell me an interesting fact Michael Well I was just saying we had a clay floor here apparently beginning of the 20th century which is shown in a photograph the actual beautiful floorboards only went down about the 2000 to celebrate the millennium but there's one I think overlooked gem in this cathedral and you'll find it if you go into the the nave to the north west corner hanging there from the ceiling of the chapel which is actually screened off the tower is a hanging object would suggest everyone goes to see that and ask what is it it's a very very interesting link with their I mention pre-Reformation past which was actually on display in this library the beginning of the 20th century as shown in that photograph a mention of a clay floor beneath it I think serves a bit more attention and certainly a bit of explanation because it really is a hidden treasure would have people come along on Thursday that won't save interest militants who are. We're talking about our way here as that's priceless I would say irreplaceable quite unique I'm told there's only one other like it in the whole country that survived the terrible destruction of the 16th century and according to my reading thanks the books we've got here we can depend do. In this wonderful reference library it's an api So I would encourage all to find out more about it so in front of us we've got the book of the month yes every month our head librarian Kevin space he choose the book and we show it to the public and share it with the world this month. Purchased his Pilgrim it's your perch a soup it was indeed yes and i'm if you can read Latin it always helps in hand with some of these books I've been 100 Jorn and 100 and painstakingly over hours and hours and months and months and years and years yes they would it and it would have taken people have complete loves of labor and then we've got the books in front of us here and loads and loads of artifacts around us as well and lots of people fascinated by what we're looking at yet it's one of our most popular tours is looking at the chain library so this is the modern part here and you can peek through into the most beautiful change the library and there are lots of different from over the years and years I mean you've got the regional cathedral which was built back in the 1500s I think yeah with the whole site actually dates back to Saxon times so there was original Saxon church here in the saxophone to that she still downstairs as well and you can see the ruins from the Saxon church in the came Riccarton and then secure in the 12th and 15th century as the rest the cathedral was built incredible it's fascinating I tell me this is they thank you very much for hosting us was a pleasure looking forward to having you here it's going to be fun Steve Jobs myself Mark Allen Funt to this road show that. And you as well our sisters day from 123 talk to. C.b.c. Some of. You based on. I do hope you can be able to join Nino and of here bring that little special objects along as well which means something to you not only expensive one not a big one just a little trinket or something which has got a story connected to him by his or more clues for you from our final song. The so. Got to number 4 in the charts in 1988 this was the 2nd big hit in the United States after Chains of Love and in the u.k. It was a 5th time in the top 10 the song is a plea for reconsideration from a lover who's been hurt and it shows the lead singer's ability to pull is hard in the lyrics and the ideas war final song is. On the b.b.c. Across the West Country for your Sunday morning. Shockey night. And they kept it up next talking about residents. Right here in the West Country. Forum good for good shall be for quite sometime not so good hot water Great Train is as well the Lotus welcome Jane farm into this year good morning good morning Martin it's a busy day for you to the Usenet Yeah we've got a special event as part of something quite new called the Breslin bath residence weekend so people that live in Bristol and Bath with b.a. B.s. Postcards and can take advantage of lots of free a free ticket office a cultural venue across both cities it's really exciting encourage you to be a tourist where you live exactly what a great concept why not there's so much today in both cities all the time and maybe so easy to live in amongst it and not maybe get on the open top bus or Katie the zoo and yes a to explore these culture of Annie's we've decided to pull together all of these families there it is galleries museums to offer free access to various things for just the residence over this weekend which is a brilliant idea original catch a flight to Amsterdam with a florist for the weekend so much going on right where we live on your doorstep and to go anywhere Exactly and it's all the I mean it's constant so the whole the whole idea is to make sure that people know I was amazing opportunities all local to them and that a suitable for different age groups all the family and maybe something you've never dabbled with before so maybe don't normally go to the theatre we don't normally get see exhibitions but ye think that maybe it's too it's not for you or maybe it's too expensive or you priorities or I don't Are you busy with work or maybe there is a way to see or. Around it and get involved and go along to something and so hopefully lots of people will go to not lots of new places for them and and it will kind of set the tone for the future and that people will go along more so the book and the grass will put a spoke. With a lot of. The a tourist where you live exactly where it's being at Spike Island so we have a big gallery space and then lots of arty studios all around the building and we're doing free historical buildings was because interestingly our building used to be a tea packing from tree and lots of buildings around the area around the harbor and Spike Island where our building is used to be a big old kind of storage place is all factories for tobacco Auti packing so we're doing these tours to show people even you know around the building you can see the artist studios and then you can see a trap door where they would have dropped the tea down so into the space below I. An artist is busy in there making somewhere say it's really exciting to see the transformation and how this space is being used so differently the troubles to work . Where they could have unlocked them completely but there's no need for them in the main times of trains is. A fascinating building I mean it's a it's a business it is yeah it's amazing to look around and you wouldn't normally get the chance say last week we had our 18 studios weekend which is a real big event and then this weekend it's a kind of gentler version of that but every interesting Toran focusing on the history so if you're interested in Bristol local history and and all of the kind of production that used to happen and then it's a really good a good one start with and all the buildings are doing their venues are doing tours as well say yeah you know you can relate to go on about yourself or you were you'd be in Spike Island today yeah I'm in Spike Island today but I'm going to China a couple of places there around the harbor because I have a stone's throw say I'm sure they've got something going on. Bristol museums is worth looking at what they are offering the on afine and and wonderful yard just around the corner that's 5 minutes from where we are they and the working boat yacht turns today and you can just jump on a boat and good between each of them as well yeah exactly get a ferry across get the view and all those things that you know you wouldn't think and a few maybe and when maybe people come to visit you in Bristol or bath you would take them to you and they would really really enjoy it and why not treat yourself to that experience regularly ever scream. And you can argue my friends once a month to get a lock on the 1st Sunday of every month we get to be a tourist today but instead we get on the train and we've got about 4 we'll go around Bristol we'll find somewhere in Somerset it's got something going on yeah you know if there's because there's a fence all over the place and we'll just be that horse for the day I'm renting self and all that stuff and we also see what we've got right here on our bills truly let's all follow your example. Today if you're going to do it do it exactly lovely we'll have a great day enjoying playing these little things to do and get involved with us by Karl and as more tools and it's a fascinating place if you've never been before it's never been about I'm going to do it today thanks my previous state on clueless I am a man I'm a community center with the hand of the player while we are in lovely I have a great on b.b.c. Radio Bristol and b.b.c. Somerset most accounts here with us this morning let's just say Have you done a lot of production some of. Fudge factory closures has your local fudge factory closed down Martin it will be a travesty if it did I single handedly keep it open Yeah. Just to keep the auction going but they are closing down Martin terrible if your local factory is closed down we love to hear from you if it's there if it's not close yet maybe can rally support. You need dealings with Spawn or you main sport is frog spawn and spawn Yes you can get alien spawn you can well they feature in film sometimes remembers a little 5 year old all used to go to the par with my little net net on the end of a little piece of wood and dip it in there and you'd be looking for the little top poles the little fish take him from up here you'd often get the folks born in as well yes they're common in ponds particularly this time of year because they are literally spoke to me you know. How would you feel Martin if you visited the remote Easter Island with those famous giant heads and one of the heads looked just like well probably might do but in my head yeah this bit of variety is you know to always knows the bit of it and. That's the. Small plays on your lips awful when you have a little glint in your eye when I give you that certain smile I think it would be unsettling. And like people with 30 think that for me it's all about the all these things. Called lovely eyes because I want to see Guardians of the galaxy and we are in deep Tista yet a fabulous film and understands what's going on but one of the catches is an alien called mantis who's a rather touchy if but they've computed Lee manipulated or are used to make them a much bigger than normal Oh they're gorgeous little the water her fingernails long filthy. Fulling all things you have a form of anything Mawson a bit of a lot of work it's no use of course you do in life in 7 different places is what we came by to they play none of them so fully coughed things one of you for and often the. Fell off the wall didn't they Yeah and I mean people criticized him at the time but it was a hell of a moment we had to make up among them in the full of the walk in a few times as I have. To fight for the off things I was not clever doesn't exist anymore it's called Misty's and a friend of mine had drunk about 8 pints and he fell off a stone wall so he's a danger isn't it when it is just a few it was a 3 legged stool and may well have been yeah. But the store reports of a woman in Florida was arrested after she attacked her boyfriend because he refused to stop playing the design the fight now that's just listen to this on the phone. With conspiring with a quizzical. That there this stuff is definitely is on the phone so have you ever attacked anyone for playing the xylophone books you know in Florida because there are too many alligators there are and you never know when one might just jump out but you know it's a very dangerous area I would advise all listeners to steer clear of that part of the world the Florida I mean the golf courses you. Well mad with. Being credible Steve Yup see they're. Back to more from 12 o'clock. And did I mention we're going to be live it was Cathedral on Thursday at 12 as I think I did hope you can join us at it's going to be very similar crews for you for my final solution I would be told You got to number 4 in the u.k. Charts in 1988 and this was the duals 2nd big hit in the States after Chains of Love in the u.k. It was their 5th time in the top 10 and this song is known for a very high note that the singer hits towards the end which is why the other member of the duo chose him from a long queue of applicants after placed an ad in Melody Maker looking for a vocalist interesting play was named and at one point the jury were so concerned that this would sound too much like a wreath a function song of the same name that they yeah they changed the end little bit but not too much and it is a good song really looking forward to playing it for you I got a little respect for this song it's clear that Steve. Old achieved that some take that my next guest so lovely Judy how you see them perform a lot of how Fiat's I went to see that with Robbie Williams a few years ago it might alter and it was amazing a while now did you go through the door told to the door to get a few. Each other a particular about Robbie Williams I have to say but you know I love angels by Robbie and the hassles of a millennium of course here they're all wonderful Yeah where did you see him let me say we saw them at college oh yeah I've seen Robbie a few places as well when they in the one we're giving our Mrs she had are having a bit of a rash so happy doesn't mess a star reviews you know. Their own without soul I live in a musical as well now you all were. Today celebrating the rotary foundation that's right yeah yeah I belong to a group called Right Reg 3 international that's been running 110 yes. But back in 1917 we started our own charity the right here foundation so we're trying to do a few things to celebrate the the anniversary it's a lovely thing to do and you do it in shipping so pretty yeah we are going to be doing something on shipping so in shipping so pretty today we're having a family will with a treasure hunt at the end for the children to take part and do a lot of the treasure hunt. Chris is well on the fold in a treasured today's clueless back from 9 o'clock all the way through till 12 I'm looking forward to it it's good to be excited but this is not your own personal clueless you can play along oh yeah well a lot of us fairly clueless so we hope children get better at the adults that's why we thought they ought to do at all times Ok cough. Come along to chipping so be rugby club you can register that between $145.10 to say and we think the walk is a 3 mile what we think of Tate round about an hour most and there are some lovely places attributes up which have a little pub lunch oh yeah. Yeah yeah a lot of us are planning to have lunch afterwards that's why we've planned it that time of day and enjoy that fabulous will host treat as well absolutely takes you back doesn't it is nice to see you all the molten buildings around it's lovely to still see places like timeless' no chip and samples and tell me a little bit about the rotary Foundation and how you got involved how I got it right Ok we're actually trying to. Do is. Organizations own charity people belongs are involved with all kinds of community events and charitable events raise money for good causes we actually have our own charity say. The idea of that is to trying to. Good in the world sure and I over the 100 years that it's been running this be somewhere in the region of 3700000000 parents given to good causes around the wells home and abroad. I mean absolutely they had an amazing amount this. This writer wrote rush remembers recalling Wright's Ariens pretty much all round the world as 1200000 of them. They all get together in local clubs. And try and do that bit to sort of improve people's lives in their own backyards and all around the world but you have a little bit of. Yeah that's right you know you're asking people to give up time from that busy naive. And so you can't expect them to have to do certain things they don't want to we asked people to do things that matter so that and so we try to do things in a way that we can we can all didn't enjoy and very often voice in votes going for a little drink off to. Have a deep brief meeting then you. And me to the Yeah Yeah exactly that's what it's all about. Yeah and we're always looking for for other people to come along and joined him with us and. Get involved because a space larger than a social club you go out you have for and you do nice things but you also make a difference and pay Yeah yeah yeah yeah yeah so they do that as business networking opportunities involved we try to draw people from all different businesses for no different parts of society so that we can share ideas share our skills and. Yet things have changed a bit in rectory I think people don't know what it is but a lot people do know. Rotary tend to get a bit of an old stuffy organization and we're doing our best to move with the times and change the image a little that we've got to know it's not just a chip in We Are you covering the research you know that's right yeah. There's never a collapse involved with the walk this morning little group of club said yeah it's down and in Keynsham. King's words and the idea really was that we wanted to celebrate the anniversary get members together enjoy each other's company and involve their family and friends and to involve the local community so we're very happy for anyone to come along and join in with us Violet some more details today rugby club and she puts up with. You could be taken. I not terribly sure to be honest it is a 3 mile walk is going out along the way all right. It's fairly flat top wark. Yeah we thought we'd like to do some pieces if somebody wanted to bring along a little one of the pushchair they can do that nice My my little grandson 2 year old grandsons Cummings. Always. Specifically Di just my grandson in mind that was a thought most family feel absolutely yes so we want people to bring the kids bring little just come along and enjoy that we have some glorious weather Oh certainly hope so wonderful with thanks for joining me this morning and best of luck with everything you do with the rotary Yeah thank you very much b.b.c. Radio Bristol. This is serious Mark Steve yaps Why is there a colorful stickers on fruit Yes nor vegetables I don't understand why they should get them on apples and pears and bananas because I'm potatoes why broccoli and I've never seen a Stick around broccoli is some sort of prejudice I think is wrong isn't it I don't like it at all mass is the result. Well you guys. Of course has been part of the old people's homes for days from b.b.c. Radio Bristol and b.b.c. Some say.
