Santa said to get the latest on the roads is like night good morning just one issue to report on the road this morning it's in Taunton it's Bridgewater road both directions between Roman road and the a 38 Bridgewater road in the tone way that one is closed in this heavy traffic around that area it's following an earlier accident where a vehicle struck a telegraph pole the utility company have closed the road whilst repairs are undertaken no further issues on the m 5 all the way through 3 or looking clear there but of course on the m 5 to please bear in mind about those road works between junctions 22 Burnham on sea and 23 Bridgewater north of us in both directions one lane is closed and there is a speed restriction there are 50 mph so that could cause you some delays this morning if you're travelling up that stretch of motorway other areas and Yeovil Westminster streets that's westbound between Princes Street and Clarence street that one is closed and it's due to a water. Charlie Taylor here with you through until midday today on a slightly shortened show thank you to Chris he's in Bridgewater who enjoyed Hark the herald angels we played a reggae version he says that was great I don't usually like carols that have been messed with. Thank you very much Chris not. To have to have a good comment as I'm sure some people didn't like it but you know I think it's nice nice just warm warmed me up after what has been a week of extremely cold weather I was cycling home one day coming but it was one and I think and icicles formed on my gloves by the time and I'm the only reason I notice that it happened was because I and I went to wash my face because it's time to get some of the news for a cold weather off my face and when you cycling your breath content. On your beard so horrible problem anyway I said wiping it off and I felt the sore hard things are now cause I look down there are the calls on my knuckles from where I've been cycling through freezing fog and it seems have warmed up a little bit doesn't it today which is which is quite nice but yeah that one just a warmer celebrate that throughout December all my shows keep listening if you want to hear Hark the herald angels or heart the reggae angels than just keep listening to my shows are played throughout December alternative if you hated it try not trying to avoid me you know tune to some other station it is 28 minutes past 10 it's Charlie Taylor we through until 12 o'clock today we're going to talk cider now it's a quintessential part of Somerset life but it's not all big companies and farmers making the stuff apparent in Cornell Minster the National Trust has been making its own side out of the apples grown on the estate this is harvest is pretty much finished so I went to the stately home to meet the woman in charge of the production line My name is Rachel Brewer and my I'm a gardener and also the. Well it's not a bad surname actually fear is it's like if you've gone into brewing of cider we just we Jake it was my destiny. So we're standing in the side a shed Barrington court which is always a side a shed is used for a few things I can see here no I don't listen to this this is just one of the old out buildings I don't think this one's actually was the side a shed but in a is it is now well it's a freezing cold the car was registering 0 degrees centigrade when I arrived here so it is absolutely freezing in here but in front of us are these huge vats of cider how many of you got here and how many liters is that. There's nearly 3000 liters in here in 200 liter Demi Johns Well it's incredible stuff to see this is a side of found it's like walking into. Heaven I imagine have rather like a kid in a toy shop. You grow all of your apples here at Barrington cotton is that something you've been doing for a while. Yet there is the option to be marked on the as far back as are on the Toilet Map so historic we've always had orchards here at Barrington itself we've got nearly 10 acres of traditional Somerset orchards comprising of just over 100 different varieties many of them local and heritage in origin now you've been collecting these for a while and you because the harvest season actually goes on quite late I think later than a lot of people realise it goes through November though yes it does yeah we've still got some native varieties out there but obviously the weather did get quite school early so we we pushed on through and tried to get as many of the apples in before the wind and rain hit so what sort of cider is going is it one variety here or are there different bits in different dimensions and it primarily it's a big old blend so it could be any of the 100 different varieties in there although we have got one tank which is just the iconic Kingston black which is a local cider apple to this region and makes a really really nice single right or cider so what feedback you had about your site is from years past there is one which goes down well in the National Trust shop Oh it does yes it sells very very well we were one lots of awards over the years several years ago our medium sized came 1st in the medium category in the bar from what show. We won 2 awards at the bottom west again last year one for our apple juice and one for the Kingston black and we have won several National Trust Fund farm produce awards as well well so it comes with a good reputation What's your background then reassigned to make when you join the National Trust or is that something that they've persuaded you to start doing money here no I'd change Korea about 12 years ago I used to work. In helicopter operations then I changed and came to the National Trust on the 3 Korea ships scheme which is like a modern day apprenticeship really so I learnt all my gardening skills on site here Barrington and also at night scary manner and then when toff. Residential educational blocks to learn all the associated qualifications but the side of making fall under that old principally know in the final year of my career ship which is where I was in 2006. The local cider farmer who used to buy all of our 10 acres worth of cider apples office no longer needed them that year because he's recently planted orchards had come into fruition so we had a lot of apples on our hands and we were also looking to do something to commemorate our sente New Year which was 2007 so we put the 2 together and as a one off we thought it be a bit of a laugh to make a few liters of cider to celebrate the centenary we no longer had a side to press on site so we put a call out to the volunteer network and somebody came up with a 200 year old sarge practice and the rest they say is history we made our 1st batch that year and called it $100.00 b.c. Well there's a great story to have no experience from it at all and just decided to do it so we're looking lot on the Internet and lots of books and asking for some local knowledge as well lot of thought and luckily for us the local businessman who lent us the cider press also gave us some good point is where to start and also a few side of farms as well gave it gave us some good ideas on where to start because it's not that easy I've got a friend who if he's listening will hate me for mentioning this but he tried to make his own it takes the right hand cream and takes about a year. Or so it's difficult to make his nose or to get the flavor is right and the balance right many different things so for you know if you think you've got it to a fine art do you relying on local knowledge anymore no not not not so much now I mean because we're not 10th year this year and we have got a good supply of apples here so we've got a good variety as our fingertips really and over the years we have learnt really what sort of apples go with which so it's not so much up these days and you if you have side of fun personally I mean some you don't actually step. You know it's my drink of choice. And is this one presumably going to tell me is your favorite of all the scientists of course. So when does this stuff because this was all harvested this year so in the last few months when will this start heating shelves not till sort of next year we made our 1st or last. Last week and normally we say it takes about 13 weeks to naturally ferment we don't add anything to little so normally about 13 weeks depending on the temperature so obviously it's gone quite cold now so that might slow it up and you can hear a few of the locks popping as as we speak so that's a good sign that it is actually still fermenting the one thing we don't want to happen is for actually to stop because once actually stops it's quite hard to get going again naturally you know that the stuff doesn't. Seem so these carry on going so easy there bulging out is that there is just the shape of the result all the air trapped inside it as much as that and that's just the shape it was going so as these are these are set to blow out if you turn and so you've got all of these here in the outbuilding and it's I think it's great to have it all on site and to do it so this side of press where does that live is that here as well but it's actually on site yes it's over one of our old farm buildings it's a lovely old Normandie press that has come from France big basket press did you ever think when you were in helicopter operations that you'd be pressing your own side of made on site the National Trust now. It's lucky quite the career change but I'm sure you're tell me no it was a good move where yet but best thing I ever did Rachael Brown. Barrington court otherwise known as the side maker you can find their side of sale at the site of Barrington call obviously at the moment it's last year's crop rather than this year's which is still in the side of making process we're talking about career changes there we heard Rachel talking about moving from helicopter operations to side to making later on in program we're talking about moving from playing professional cricket to playing rugby I want to know about your big career. Changes let us know when you've made a big change in your career 345-303-1566 is the number to give us a cause I was 345-303-1566 you can. Start your message with the word Somerset's. Somerset Park Street Taunton t. a $14.00 d. L. You can have up to 4 tickets per application and it's all done on a 1st come 1st serve basis 26 minutes to 12 hour let's talk hedgehogs because it's been really really cold over the past few nights and that is making it difficult for some of the counties hedgehogs most of them are getting ready to hibernate but some of the smaller ones haven't been able to put on another fat to make it through the winter prickles hedgehog rescue has taken in around 170 juvenile hedgehogs and it says The phone has been ringing off the hook with people who want to bring more hedgehogs to them round Pearce has been telling me more about it we've gone into a cold spell and what we're finding is the head jokes having assessing the 2nd litter later on in a long term you had some really nice weather in Alton which state nice sunny attempts have been quite mild so they carried on producing. Basically then what happens is none weans them commanding those cans off to do our own thing goes up to hibernate once temperatures drop for the little ones are left to forage for themselves once the temperature drops as well seafood natural food seems to is quite rare and scarce in the gardens so as well as the temperatures plummeting they also then get an issue of not having enough food to support them sounds so there's some very good parenting to me to have the baby with them and then take a lot if not leave but I guess they're looking after themselves now aren't they making something come back another here and do the same again I guess so yes so we end up with all the babies here so what we've got here referring to now is babies but they're actually some juveniles so that the ones at the back she probably. Were born a couple of weeks or perhaps a month or so ago they've been coping for a little while but now they need the extra support now the temperatures have dropped so how many have you got here because there are blue and pink boxes that boys and girls boys and blues the next For go like that was the plan but generally when they come in they get to create this fray and clean. We have 170 in the moment so we really awful. Be trying to separate normally in a separate cage we have some at the moment unfortunately West tipping is coming together the same sex the same sex and the same weight and the same medical needs they can actually go in together but where possible they do their own separate crates Now last night. We had some people say it's minus 8 in parts or some such as a really cold night. Fairly holiday out of thought looking at the meter they suffer with temperatures like that they do mean hypothermia is a big big killer for them obviously a lot of them that come in they will actually come in and be requiring to go on a heat pad all hoaxed come in under 200 grams automatically when he had any way we can assess their temperature by popping them overall and checking the temperature of their skin under that on the tummy which we always do. So yet the temperatures would freak if the temperature goes that they will be tracked and think it's ready for hibernation even if they haven't got enough that reserve so. Presumably diet hibernate they will get they way they won't make it they need to be at least 600 grams to survive hibernation to happen a fat Reserve to support themselves if they haven't got that they'll just perish and not wake up so we had a nice sunny day along Alton didn't remember the whole of October was pretty nice so we had that lengthy time there and now if it's cold snap I suppose it's the perfect recipe for you getting filled up with a 170 hedgehogs Yeah so we've certainly the phone has been ringing off the hook basically we were expecting it to slow down by night because it has got to say cold but each day list still getting probably 3 or 4 or 5 calls of people needing to bring hatchets into us so the little ones are still trying to cope but there is still that food but I think with the temperatures as they are that's going to slow down that will force them to go into hibernation and possibly there won't be many more admissions coming in each day a hive of activity and these are all volunteers were at work all. Row here by volunteers so we have a really really good team as I mentioned earlier go to morning team that works to lunch time one or 2 o'clock here doing the clean actually assessment and then another band of volunteers coming in the afternoon to actually do the feeding say and that's another couple hours worked and that the children family loves you you mustn't thousands of copies of the paper being used as you are doing so lots of shredding goes on so you are betting to line it shred to shredded paper just to make beds for them as well yes we're very lucky we get quite a few donations late clay say which will help when your charity round appears there from Precor hedgehog rescue in Chad where I was earlier this week to meet them and have a look at some of those hedgehogs as a video online as well head to our Facebook page all Twitter page to search b.b.c. Some say you'll find us on both of those well worth keeping an eye out for hedgehogs for those who haven't put on enough fat to survive the winter something that I don't struggle with clearly on the lead up to Christmas and Christmas itself but hedgehogs do so if you do see one prickles is there you can find all the details online should you find one which you think needs looking after they should be starting to hibernate about now now that we've had that cold snap and also thank you to Mark has been in touch Mark is from Barb which is the rescue hovercraft charity at Burnham on c. He says can you add to that the Trinity lights which we were talking about which is the answer to Taylor's teaser early on are raising money for Barb thank you very much Mark s. Will say that now the Trinity lies if you are heading along to Burnham on sci raising money for the hovercraft charity which does a lot of great work while saving lives on the coastline certainly around the time of year in the summer when we see a lot of people coming to Burnham on sea and stories of lots of rescues taking place with Barb and certainly having a big part in that so thanks very much Mark for getting in touch with Saint 21 minutes to 12 now you've got me for the next 21 minutes and then Saturday sport will take over with commentary of Bath against Saracens what else they got on stage we have a look bar to get Saracens that's 3rd place bar in the Premiership again Saracens who are currently top of the league though the European. Champions of the Premiership champions from last year's Well going to be a difficult game for Bath today a win might just sneak much closer to Saracens if they get a big win as well and it would put them within touching distance of top position that starts a quarter past 12 in the championship today will bring you coverage of Bristol City against which That's at 3 o'clock 14th place Bristol City against 15th place it's Which town and mid table battle for that one and in League 2 Yeovil town are in action against Crawley today he was park Yes well who are 13th and can go up into the playoff places with a win 16th that's the 3 o'clock off on that one as well if you're Bristol Rovers fan do not despair we've got live coverage of that game that is tomorrow at 2 o'clock the f.a. Cup Bristol Rovers against Barrow I think it's been moved to the Sunday so that both Bristol teams are playing at home at the same time something that they try to avoid for safety reasons so it's Sunday for you Bristol Rovers against barrow in the f.a. Cup 2nd round at 2 o'clock we'll bring you live coverage of that here on b.b.c. Somerset tomorrow. Latest on the roads coming up 1st of all tops. late night Thanks Charlie Yeah well we do have a couple of issues in and around the county this morning will start off in Taunton Bridgewater road both directions we still have issues there following an earlier accident where a vehicle struck a telegraph pole the utility company have closed the road whilst repairs are undertaken there is between Roman road and the 838 Bridgewater road and the tone way so the road is closed there and there is heavy traffic in the area also near Bishop's Lydiard on the b. 3 to 4 that's near Lethbridge park there is an accident there as well and delays are possible there and it's partially blocked so do bear that one in mind if you're traveling around that area no issues on the m 5 but of course do bear in mind between 2 at junctions $22.00 Burnham on sea and junctions $23.00 Bridgewater north there is a lane closed on both carriageways bringing us to beat restriction to 50 miles per hour so expect delays if you are traveling along those stretches of motorway this morning also in Yeovil Westminster St works westbound between Princes Street and Clarence street the road is closed there and it's closed in the one way system following a burst water main events that could cause some delays for you today in Wellington the town center sees its Christmas lights being switched on today most of the High Street is going to be closed off from 4 o'clock until 730 also Dunster by candlelight it is happening this evening sir could be some heavy traffic around Dunster area between 4 o'clock and 9 o'clock and lastly in Yeovil at Stadium today as. Somerset I can't believe she's doing this but what a way to raise money for her church Lucy taking more reaction if you had from family friends in a very poor and brilliant. Nor could you enjoy Sunday morning with. Justin thank you sir thank you and speaking to you from over think you. Can still. Get. To the quality of the music as the caller says it's the oxygen it's inspiring Sunday morning from 6 on b.b.c. Sunset. Said. free and all right now. We're talking about career changes on the show. And we've heard about a lady who used to work in helicopter operations who now is the side maker Barrington court Well this is slightly different picture cricket the summer sport a gentle pace a gentlemanly spirit and now think of rugby a sport for cold winter nights full of power and contact not much in common you might think well think again Alex Barratt Somerset's former wicket keeper has made the move to scrum half for Taunton Rugby I went to see him at a freezing cold training session this week. Well look at this pitch I reckon I bowl 1st on this one bit of a green top or Charlie it's a rough patch it's not. Oh you know you're right you know I can see the posi the side of the pitch now this is a bit of a new thing for you Alex you're used to standing behind the wickets and playing cricket he was getting involved in rugby team Why is that. I saw it as a challenge and at the end of my time at Somerset I wasn't getting much game time and something of force had to do and I love her be certain you know contacted Nick Mason he's playing for the Titans and then just come along and he said yes I put down and you know being back of center enjoying the base a bit different I'm looking from the outset you know cricket got that reputation of being quite a slow pace I know you're you know you're behind the work in the balls coming out you're an 8090 miles an hour but it's got that slow pace there is rugby is so it's contact sport it's moving across the pitch really quickly How's it does it feel very different Yeah it is very different you know the environment is different. In terms of the coaches and things it's of says it's not sort of a full time full time role here. But it is different but the coaches really get done here fairly and really enjoyed it. And I like this of culture and rugby and you know it gets a bit precious like the uni stuff and things but in terms of playing and then getting involved is fantastic you know I've really enjoyed just get stuck in it's very much just grab someone to eat got to do kind of kind of thing where's something I'm not not quite you see but you know it's all good and it's all developing and and learning new things and and just love rugby so again I'm playing a square for other skills you've been able to take from keeping wicket and and batting to being a rugby pitch or is it just totally completely different Yeah and skill sets is pretty different I thought I did like in the scrum half past 1 last try. Which I think then. Simulator 7 similar to that I found but you know it is completely different and that's sort of why I've enjoyed it so much but it's also I've had 7 years out of it. From school where I've been. You know just it's just a new challenge that I think I needed and also to keep me so positive and as well is of the coming to coming to the end some says is a disappointing and and hard thing to deal with. And turns and give me a chance to have a new focus have that mindset. Again when I sassed training twice a week to 40 which I do. It just it just gives you a different mindset and it's been really good it's 0 degrees Celcius as I left the car this this just isn't cricket Alex this is you know who's going to be out there in the sunshine and here we are it's for you can barely see the other side of the pitch this is it just feels like the the total opposite does that do you see this is something you do you feel you can crack into the 1st teams in a playing the 2nd is a lot yeah definitely I think it's been a bit of a waste of time to be honest if I if I didn't think. I want to play for the 1st team and and that's beneficial for myself but for Taunton I've become as well my time is going to be coming to an end before I go to Cape Town and I'm sure cricket again but it's been really good and I definitely think I can I think get into that enter side which is what I want to do. You know when I come back from Cape Town of public come and train Apollo and play his cricket season becoming a and then we'll see what happens and I was going to ask you your cricket future you mentioned they heading to South Africa you're going to Cape Town to do the Gary Kirsten Academy. 2 months out there just solid training a few matches but I think it's something that my cricket needs and will benefit from it's more specific training rather than just going away and playing club cricket overseas and getting some sun that's going to have a real purpose to. Cricket sessions then a gym session and working with game self so yeah really. And I think it is going out in a few other guys and I said you could see yourself as a cricketer rather than a rugby player and they're not a hybrid in our society. Now you know for the moment yeah I've put cricket on hold and that again that's something that I've never done but I think it's again something I needed to just take complete break from it in our don't think I've ever gone so long without having a cricket ball. In December now and I haven't had one since. September so you know that's again different folk and it's it's it's not like I'm just giving up it's just changing that mindset into. Reality really you're going to have setbacks and you've got to find find ways around that you've got to find a way to love what you do again and I think getting released it does give you that . Doubt but it also gives you that. That discovery of what you want to do in you know one of the 1st Us or so on to deliver 1st class hundreds that won't be for some set now but I hope it will be for someone else but you know the meantime and. You know that's why I'm here I don't want to be seen as as a quick to in a I have an unfair fun playing well to be one of the best I can it's good oh. Well you. Might. Want to head coach of the Titans so you of taking on a new recruit since September Alex Barratt for wicketkeepers How's the maids do you think looking at how its progression is going. You know who's getting ready to remarry want to come along with the training to also invite him along to the club you know you can tell he's a very talented sportsman he also played rugby for a little while but saying that he's very coachable he's picking things up really really quickly you'll see him really good shape very fit. And you know he saw fit in really really well how easy is it to go from a sport with a slower pace like cricket to something which is. Fast and Furious like robbery a much shorter slower pace if you look at a ball coming at you at 90 miles an hour that's not going to keep or your view oh yeah yes or a different field or that's right but he's you know I think it's slightly different from his point of view a skill set is very good is handling is very good his awareness of space is good you know he's a talented sportsman from our point of view you know we've got him involved in training he's looking sharp in training it's just a case of getting to games he's playing for a Warriors at the moment the words are strong side and he's given an opportunity just to sort of get out on the field and start to sort of play the 2nd team is that our 2nd team Yes you know any tight as I have on a Saturday play for the war is a lot stronger than they used to be which is working really well and it's given these guys an opportunity just sort of cut their teeth a little bit and he's got a little bit because he plays 9 he's in the thick of it all the time and I think having not played rugby for a while just takes a little bit of time just a case of back up to speed but from a train point of view looking resharpen you know he's fit in really well he's really nice Larry but I say he's very coachable he's pledged to work with Coach Well he's been part of a professional sports team for for quite a few years in age like to think about it yeah you know of course you can you can tell by his manner you know the way he listens the way he gets things done you know after 10 twice but unlike some of the other ones you know you know he's very receptive turned to feedback you know he's very very talented and you said he's been in that professional environment it's a very easy in great shape physically very fit as well you know that bodes well for him going forward as he got a chance going into the 1st team do you think you know definitely you know he's come back he's of he not been involved with rugby for for a long while with his with his 1000000000.
