An education. Hello and welcome to Al Jazeera America, im Morgan Radford in new york. A massive storm is bearing down on indias coast as we speak. Cyclone phailin, fez we are talking just a matter of hours before the storm strikes but is india really ready . Well, morgan, it is a little bit of a mix here. A lot of people in small fishing villages, they seem to be worried about the storm and whats going to happen. But in the outer section of the storm, a lot of people are coming to the beach as almost a picnic atmosphere, its actually a holiday today. People are telling me they are worried about the storm but if we buckle down well be perfectly fine. Weve learned theres about 10 Million People that could be affected by the path of cyclone phailin. More people than in new york state. The huge wall of water that crashed on the coastline so the most the government is doing to prepare people is moving them into shelters. We also understand that people are bussed to government shelters. But can those shelters really withstand such a powerful storm . We are on our way to investigate that but what were hearing from people who are in the shelters themselves are schools and government buildings. And the best that the government is saying is they are on land which is what is going to protect them. But the many trains have been cancelled in the region so peoples only choices are either to go to shelters or buckle down and hope for the best. Thank you fez. The area is no strange tore deadly storm. The most severe was a category 5 storm in 1999. And that cyclone was called e erissa. That is the most expensive and extensive in history. We are going to be taking a look at whats happening. This is cyclone phailin. It has grown unbelievably strong during that time. Just off the coast of india, heading towards the northwest. Its expected to make landfall about 1 complon 3 complon 1 30. Were going to be watching this and show you what happens. One of the biggest problems is going to be the storm surge. In 1999, a very similar cyclone made landfall here with the same intensity and the storm serge was the most devastating part of it. 15,000 people approximately died because of it. The storm surge went inland for nearly 12 miles. Anything near the storm surge is going to be the most susceptible. Where its making landfall is one of the most densely Populated Areas in india. Bangladesh will be out of the path to some extent. By the time we go to sunday we think it will be making landfall. Also across most of the northern plains. Ty foon nari, battered parts of the northeastern coastline, flooded roads uprooted trees and damaged houses. On the 11th day of the Government Shutdown more signs of progress. The white house and Senate Republicans met on friday in an effort to break the deadlock. The stock market reacted positively to the stocks with the Dow Jones Industrial average rising over 100 points. Mike viqueira has more from the white house. We have entered a phase, very few details, perhaps thats a good sign. No one wants to foul up any negotiations which are now evidently at a very sensitive stage. Senate republicans, finally their turn after House Republicans had already met with the president. They put together a proposal to reopen the government this is something the white house is taking very serials. Iserials seriously. After the republicans return to the capital Lindsay Graham the conservative of South Carolina spoke very optimistically about whad happened. I think youll see something come out of the house in the next 24 hours that will open the entire government, will not destroy the government but make it better. Raising the debt ceiling not for a year but for a period of time, i hope the president will accept these gestures and get these issues behind us. Theres a hill to be had in the next 24 hours that will release some of the pain caused by the Affordable Care act. That plan is competing with the house plan, the president through his spokesman today backing off any support of that, just after tuesday the president said he would absolutely be open to an extension as short as six weeks. In the meantime, House Republicans want negotiation on spending and taxes. House and Senate Democrats the president s allies were known to be very reluctant to commit to anything like that as part of a deal to break this impasse. Both parties say they would like to postpone the next round of across the board cuts better known as sequester. Those are due by january 1st. Meantime, president obama met with malala yousefzai, who was shot in the head on her way home from school, just by demanding education. She is considered a front runner for the nobel peace prize.
