The top 10 this week in 1973: Battle of the giants in a classic Christmas chart

This top ten from 47 years ago features two of the most popular Christmas songs of all time.
Slade's 'Merry Xmas Everybody' hit the top of the charts on December 15, 1973 and remained rooted there until mid January. It had about half a million advance orders, going on to sell more than a million.
It was thought that the Slade festive blockbuster might be edged out by Wizzard's equally catchy 'I Wish It Could Be Christmas Everyday', but the latter peaked at number four and stayed in that position for four consecutive weeks.
By December 1973 Slade were one of the leading bands in Britain. Earlier in the year they had two singles - 'Cum On Feel The Noize' and 'Skweeze Me, Pleeze Me' - go straight to number one, a feat not achieved since The Beatles' 'Get Back' in 1969. Against this backdrop, manager Chas Chandler suggested they try their hand at a Christmas song.
