(Note by columnist Howard Riley: The excellent background stories by Dr. Eliza Darling, about a manhunt in the wilds of Long Lake/Blue Mountain, were prompted by a column published here on April 17 taken from a March 4, 1932, copy of the Malone Evening Telegram. There are many times when I lift a story from some old newspaper, but seldom do I find out “the rest of the story.” Thanks to a phone call from Nancy Bernstein, we got the rest of the story when she connected me with Dr. Darling. From the response I have received, this tale has resonated far and wide — it is superb writing with fascinating details.)
