Queen Victoria probably didn’t put a great deal of thought into it, when she decided to name a distant colonial outpost “British Columbia.” Last month, a resolution was put forward at the Lower Mainland Local Government Association’s annual general meeting asking that the province come up with something that better reflects the region’s history and cultural diversity.
There’s a certain irony that the motion came from Pemberton, a picturesque mountain town of roughly 2,500 people on unceded Lil’wat Nation territory, itself named after a Hudson’s Bay Company surveyor who never set foot there. In the end, only 40 per cent of fellow municipalities voted to seek a provincial rebranding.
