Joe Cutbirth (BJ, University of Texas at Austin, '99) is assistant professor at the Moody College of Communication, where his work involves leadership and communication in news organizations. This year he piloted a course based on research by a working group at Moody College that is developing an open source curriculum for effective ethical leadership inside news organzations. Cutbirth is a former editor-in-chief of the Texas Observer and political writer for the Fort Worth Start-Telegram. He’s also worked as a statewide communication director in two Texas governor's races and one presidential campaign. Cutbirth has held faculty appointments at the Columbia School of Journalism, the University of British Columbia, and the University of Virginia. He earned his doctorate at Columbia University, his master's at Georgetown University, and most importantly his undergraduate degree from the University of Texas.
