COLOMBO, March 12 (Xinhua) -- Sri Lanka on Friday detected the first case of the South African variant of the COVID-19 after an individual who returned from Tanzania tested positive for the virus, local media reported here Friday.
Director of the Department of Immunology and Molecular Medicine of Sri Jayewardenepura University, Dr. Chandima Jeewandara told local journalists that the individual had been in a quarantine center upon his arrival.
Sri Lanka has to date detected 86,989 positive COVID-19 patients out of which 83,561 patients had recovered and been discharged from hospitals. Enditem
