Hudson Valley officials and emergency responders are urging the public to wear lifejackets after at least four people drowned in the Delaware River in as many days, according to a statement released Wednesday by the Sullivan County spokesperson.
The latest drowning has deeply shaken Highland Supervisor Jeff Haas, one of the Yulan firefighters who performed resuscitation on a 28-year-old drowning victim Tuesday evening at a campground near Barryville, according to Dan Hust, director of communications for Sullivan County.
“This river doesn’t play games,” Haas said. “The recent deaths have been of young, able-bodied people who drowned because they weren't wearing PFDs (personal flotation devices). This young guy was 40 yards from shore in no more than 10 feet of water. His brother told me that he was right behind him, and then suddenly he was gone.”
