Santa Rosa Police are taking steps to answer nonviolent mental health calls. The Press Democrat reports that the SRPD has signed a contract with the Oregon-based non-profit White Bird Clinic to help implement a program that would send mental health workers rather than police to help in nonviolent calls. The White Bird Clinic has set up the “Crisis Assistance Helping Out on the Streets” unit, CAHOOTS for short, for answering these calls in Eugene, Oregon dating back to 1989. Santa Rosa Police officials hope to have a pilot program as early as July or August.
