Since 1999, on the first weekend of May, runners fly through the streets of Cincinnati for the Flying Pig Marathon. On Sunday, even in the midst of the pandemic, they continued to pound the pavement around the region, crossing personal finish lines.Tim Amman has run the race for the last few years, including last year when the race first went virtual.“It’s a lot different than any other year, but it's special in the same way, I guess, you can say,” said Amman.Socially distant, the marathon couldn’t draw in the large crowds and had to keep COVID-19 protocols in stride. About 5,000 people will run virtual marathons this weekend, tracking their own miles and setting a personal pace. But for runners — and walkers like Bob Platt — just being on the course is its own victory lap.“It brings the whole running community together with the rest of the community. I love being out on the course,” Platt said.Race coordinator Iris Simpson Bush is cheered on by these runners and walkers crossing the finish line and taking pictures.“Moving through 2021, it’s not going to look exactly as the way the pig looked in the past, but we’re going to put fun in the run, we’re going to celebrate that we are all back together and looking very ecstatically to the future,” Simpson Bush said.
