What caused me to run for governor i kind of french myself to help us celebrate and remember the 20th anniversary of the Political Campaign that shocked the world former governor Jesse Ventura was joined by several key figures in his campaign and administration campaign. Chairman dean barkley Bill Hillsman the Campaign Advertising guru and political strategist. Running mate and 37 year schoolteacher made. And finally the Communications Director for the ministration john dean barkley will really was the one that got me and in my neighborhood up there all of a sudden i started to see nice barkley signs for congress or senate i Forget CongressBarkley Barkley and all and i kind of thought who is this barkley what is this Independence Party at the time. And so on i got involved there and i met them and i realized that the majority of the Independence Party a great many of them were disgruntled democrats and republicans who feel the systems failing and they want something new and so and i felt that way also and so i supported dean when he ran. To make the long story shorter. Dinas for minnesota they have the annandale 4th of july parade and he asked me to walk in it so were walking through annandale down the crowds going crazy but theyre going crazy for me you know youre not a team and ill never forget leaning over to me and whispering there didnt have to whisper it was pretty loud he said see the wrong guys running that was the genesis thats when my wife went on the line you know it was my hometown and it was a little embarrassing. But he completely really did. And i just wonder this would translate into political popularity and thats where the idea how my hand and thats where the thought started we had a great big Budget Surplus because the economy in the ninetys was super strong and because of the taxation rate in minnesota they took in bill. And i was doing talk radio and i was outraged. Thats the people who. Made a statement on the radio one. Sense the feeling out there that people were looking for something. The center. Its always the left and the right. To pick. It quote the lesser of the 2 evils i guess when you get a candidate that occupies the center the left and right them can make inroads and i knew and plus i knew that that we needed to get. Voters who did normally vote so i figured theres about 24. 00 or 25 percent that are already voted for an independent with ralph as is ok with them what we have to do and youre right we had to expand the electorate so we can get to 25 but how do we get to 35 to 37th and i figured well the young voter doesnt vote for it out for me we can motivate that walk of voters to take a chance and show up we have a shot we did the 1st part of the campaign on that replay disease during well what you do is you do exactly you go to bed at which is whether you did you go to the people still unit event like this on an od you describe it to flood luxury to your video will fly but if you think of a Governor Campaign you can oh you can understand or picture what the other side of the dialler not altering their perilous at the time good thing which is one of the campaign was the mermaid caroline a little a dollar a day before and we were as i and drop dead all 3 the line of the Campaign Manager was a poll to have you know theres a bolt out if you are ok and i know hed run cold he cant make this stuff up knowing that it was a complete. It was as grass d root as you could possible yes as you said 34 people down doing things that was yeah i remember dean taking me to a debate i think was the twentys public telephone rang and we were sitting in a cafeteria or something watching this debate and that was when. I just decided after work for jesse because he was so different from middle. Those days you mean youre right. And you means that you were actually part of the strategy you were there doing the numbers yeah we really did we had really good voter targeting gross as well and the other thing people forget about this campaign it was really the 1st effective use of the internet yes in a Political Campaign. We didnt have a feeling as the feelers ations people emailing other people but there are some pretty big indicators people forget the context of the entire race we were at the state fair the democrats for some reason that still eludes me invited everybody to their debate this so jesse would show up other 3rd party can see it show up and every time id watch these debates go on. Everybody would be nodding when jesse spoke so its not hard to figure out if youre at a democratic primary or that and theres 5 candidates in the democratic primary and this guy is the 2nd choice of almost everybody there you start to go through this is a very different dynamic than weve ever seen before if hes the 2nd choice of all the democrats thats pretty good at so awfully good starting place when i initially ram there were multiple opponents because i was in the debates very early on before the primaries even came around but when it got down after the primaries it got down to the big 2 or if you include me 3. Hubert h. Humphrey the democrat Hubert Humphrey son the former Vice President s son and he was the current attorney general. Maire norm coleman the mayor of st paul who they always saw i found it very interesting. That humphrey was always referred to by. Political title of attorney general Humphrey Coleman was always referred to as mayor norm coleman and even vole coleman had no more mayor than i did i was always former pro rational or Jesse Ventura show i was the only candidate that had his private sector job put in front of his name where the public and i have been a mayor so should shouldnt be former mayor Jesse Ventura because were talking politics here but thats the bias that i faced but in hindsight that was probably good but if they did name the other 2 was private sector jobs i dont want to landslide because then it would have been former lawyer skip pomfrey and former lawyer norm coleman or some of the substance of those debates was really surprising to people and other things that happened in the debates had never happened i mean they would ask. A question and skipped as the family disease of luxury is so he starts talking immediately and you can see him trying to formulate an actual answer as hes talking so uses up his entire 2 minutes they give the same question to norm call it he starts right away hes trying to make his points he gets cut off because hes going to go over they ask jesse a question he says yes. And they say nobody knew what to do they say would you like to elaborate on it and and he says us mean question i gave you an answer. Joe nobody knew it to be nobody and i dont think you know history of politics or ever not use their entire 2 minutes to Say Something i want to piggyback them of that now because i dont need 1000000 said yes im. Never forget the moderator did have a sense of humor because i looked around when moses stunned because i said. Well i answered the question did night on the moderator of the new web yes i mean if you do please show it that double song getting you into the crowd good and all it required was a yes or no right in another debate it was a friday night and the 2 other candidates are all dressed up. Jesse shows up the same is football coaching outfit you know anything like a sweatshirt in and innocence yeah i was almost lax yeah right there and then just banks people relate to somebody like that you know it wasnt all show and then finally there was the 3rd debate where you told that amazing story about the gay wrestler whose companion couldnt get in to see and then he was dying of aids i mean i heard it sprung up all over the state when you said that there was one of the most affecting things that were seeing with all it how can you have a sign telling you who you love and who you dont get to sit by your bedside its your diary or your mother in an emergency and because again youre not allowed in there whos written say movie you know and so and i think that. The fact that i didnt you should know children. You know people knew that that the answers they were getting were true and from the heart the truth was what if you were looking at. Jesse ventura and the campaign from the outside as i was thats what started to resonate with me it was it was the truth and you would also often use examples of truth telling no jury i gave you 2 things and took advice from me its i said number one is tell the truth just dont want to think never to see if you dont know the answer minute yeah its fine itll make you look a real person you dont have it all there and just personal your performers. And you beaching only one from what. Beginning in September Terry shares the limited push up to the mid twentys and we had to spell one penny on advertising and that mob i think we did a couple reading what was it and thats where we got into position actually when i looked it up just a day or 2 ago on and jesse was at 15 percent october 15th and he finished 37 percent so a 2 a literally a 20 point jump in 3 weeks to. Assist in the middle isnt that. Your government and our government and all the other major governments of the world know whats going to happen and when its going to. But they havent told you and they havent told me they havent announced. Imagine something as big as the earth. Is going to cause tidal waves earthquakes volcanoes erupt and its going to chill. So very for a while right. My great grandfathers court. Nobody would care about the law or prison so youd have wallace this should have. A terrible life between now and the. Well. Captured the moment. Being a condemnation of capitalism was. The ghost of christmas future was neil liberalism visiting the president trying to warn people what happens when you financial lies the Global Economy and you do 3 or 400 years today christmas being a holiday of. Its significance as a spiritual soul. And here we are you know weve all been very very naughty and weve all been. And were all sitting in our thinking about what we did this is a moment of self reflection for the Global Community to sit. And think about what you. Early on. You know we did we we did look at you know some of the results were progression the monks the groups. The chances of me. I needed to be softened by. A lot of people i actually was polishing my Kitchen Cabinets that i get this call and they said my name is and i am on the committee for justified tourer as a candidate for governor and i said. They said. We would like. To. I said no public teacher im not a politician. I knew that he wanted somebody who had a background in education because of his lack of experience with education to do that in the schools and such i thought well you nor i do not have i think i had about 30 years under my belt there ready of being a teacher and i knew the schools from the children point the parents point from the administrators and there were a lot of things that i thought need fixing so as i met with my family and they said well youre near retirement you are always talking about how to improve education and maybe this is your opportunity so i thought about that so the next day i got a call from jesse asking me if i would be interested in being his. Running mate as lieutenant and i said yes i will do so i was from that point i was so excited because i could talk about education you were crucial to the success of the stick to i mean theres no way i dont think the jesse lives without you on the ticket because. You gave it a certain sense of gravity to us you know and education is so important to voters and to this day i dont know if people would remember your name but they know theyre just going to arraign with the teacher or send emails side Conference Room and were discussing in the senate we should do a victory tour road to victory tour now is the 1st time we came off ploy half you know what 2nd until our and i go all over the state of minnesota in 48 hours or 3 days i think the last point in our. Meeting so. Now were going to shop there are slow thats occurring to the film and so was i and he says well we should use the. Minette yeah and do some live shots on the front fan of build some momentum sawing oh i said then i says ok stop doing Everything Else and lets break this im after that was another thing that nobody had ever done before i mean people have done bus tours and stuff like that before but the whole rationale behind it was this is the next navy Seal Campaign is committed. Will be campaigning when theyre sleeping 10 miles of people are going on the road to pay and theres like 3 cars behind us with with balloons with all those following the ocean and then as laid leave others would replace them so were going gaming people everywhere who go to rob will stay with us wasnt exactly a well oiled machine so we would be running sometimes 23 hours behind and we were going all night so youd show up 3 hours late at 2 oclock in the morning to someplace home or yeah and there was still a tremendous number of people there a nuisance sunday night these people got to work monday morning these are farmers friends or people theyd waited there for 2 hours for us to arrive when we come out and it was unbelievable i mean people hanging at midnight in willmar minnesota paying off the building and of course the other 2 immediately imitate it so this skipped town for goes out and gets a bus and he cant get anybody on the bus or to show up so they end up paying people to be on his bus or a crowd yes lol and norm coleman has a bus that looks like something out of the music man i mean the whole thing they must spend way more money than we spent in the entire campaign on this bus because the bus would roll and theyd roll out the stuff that be like a stage and all the sound stuff and on the get up to the song and dance everything gets rolled up back in the bus off to the next stop weve got to. And i have never seen people work as hard on a campaign as your people did and they were almost all volunteers all staff and everybody was almost dead at the end of that bus trip but they saw it through and it was an amazing success in fact i oddball bread. We hired b. L. Yes because hes an agent thats the job but everybody else on my campaign the only person that got paid was dug from the line and thats because he had to leave his job full time and take over you know the campaign for the party so we paid doug the equivalent of what he made. This is truly a Peoples Campaign i dont think weve seen anything like it before or since the democrats other parties talk about their get out the vote program all are volunteers all this organization they have this is a situation where the people in minnesota organize themselves. We were driving there to canterbury that night early evening there was a strange. Circle around the mood in the sky that night the truly was because i remember my son and my wife and i all looked at it and my son was in the back seat and he goes dad something strange is going to happen that he said to me on the way. In and so we went out there with that expectation but when i truly realized. It i always believed i could win but believing in actuality are 2 Different Things but what got me that night was when word came in that the lines to register were longer than the lines to vote. That to me was the key you know we have same day registration in minnesota and i thought thats the key these people are not coming up to vote for the status quo old theyre not waiting. In law either to vote for skip or more money theyre waiting in line because its their 1st time and ill just state this i cant tell you all since then. How many young people have come up to me there and it just makes me feel so good to tell me always you know you were the 1st person i ever folded for and that to me is the reward. More than anything of ever being the governor was the fact that we had that type of impact on the people they told us were untouchable w c c o or me up that morning in their little political reporter asked crosses yeah the university of minnesota of the valley lives around the block for young people registering to vote on a watch and day thats the 1st time i said may god may have done that because that was the missing piece that i didnt know the whole time or are they going to show off ive never seen before or since the initial returns came in with you had 37 percent can you never move ive never seen anything like this yes all night it was 37 percent and coleman was trailing and he made a little bit of a movie at one point and i thought well thats the end of it now call him in the millions but it never happened he will never get that it was interesting because when the 1st very returns came in the very 1st it was right in the order Humphrey Coleman money the 2nd returns came in Humphrey Ventura Coleman i moved up to 2nd and then i think it was at what 5 percent to 7 percent was when i took the lead was that about because they had a 3 percent to 5 and a stab at that they came in with a missionary and i went from why i asked to 2nd to 1st that was the real amazing thing is that it was skip and roger molds that put me in the debates thinking i was going to take republican conservative votes because of fiscal conservative. It was the opposite. 46 percent. Where he was all the time i was. Always within the margin of. Never went up never went down ill never forget the fact that we were in the back and i had already gone out once to the crowd and they were. In and i said no im not going out and. Not just to go out there. Ill never forget bill was right here to my right side. On the t. V. Set the bar. Jesse venturas being declared the winner i dont remember which is from c. B. S. Or a. B. C. I dont know who made the 1st call but then all of a sudden the other 2 came right along and. There was only 60 percent of the. And they were declaring me the winner. Everyone wanted me to. There was only 60 percent of the vote. I said you want me to walk out there and declare myself the i should. Be the biggest laughingstock in the history i said im not there yet and ill never forget bill sitting there call me quiet man. He looks at me. He said. Sure i said yes bill i did he said trust me. I said. I said bill theres 40 percent of the phone left how can you say they havent been wrong in 15 years because youve got to. Do here to. He. Insists years. Ago. And i remember all of those huddling in the closet there to try to figure out what to do next and terry whos the unsung hero of this campaign. Was crying ashley because she did not want to be 1st lady despite the fact that she turned into like the best 1st lady in Minnesota History it was just chaos at that point and i remember the other memory was when i finally did walk out all those volunteer cops were nowhere in sight all of a sudden there was like 12 smoke. Around me and. Everyone out of the way. It was like almost you got taken over you know you got taken over your life was no longer yours anymore. It was a case in this election were where. We. Were. Just as i said if you if you saw behind the scenes when i made the statement the night we won we shocked the world if you would have been behind the scenes you would have truly understood what that what that statement said before we shot the world because in all you know we we had great people. We had no money. To speak of i mean the dems and repub what 12000000. 350008 year you know but it proved to me. That. When cash did. The world heavyweight title. Quote we shock. And thats how i felt that night i felt like. I shot that nobody gave us a chance but we did it. For. Theyre just taking all the alternative all. The taking and as i say the stage shows the. Cold real choices binary choice and only choices if you. Are liberal and most binary thing is not a chunk of the states to school to provide a new all picture of by the cold ted and start negotiations with.
