• Despite recent proposals to build affordable housing units at former schools in Middletown and Portsmouth, those towns still fall woefully short of meeting the state's 10% affordable housing requirement. 
Even if the 40-unit proposal at the former Berkeley-Peckham School site in Middletown is realized, the town still would only be at 5.97%. In Portsmouth, a proposal to build housing units — as well as senior center — at the former Anne Hutchinson and Coggeshall schools would be nothing more than a drop in the bucket because the town stands currently at 2.8%.
