Kabir Bedi’s daughter Pooja Bedi has lived life on her own terms. And now, even as her daughter makes a space for herself in Bollywood, and son studies to become a businessman, she has maintained her unique identity and voice. On Mother’s Day today, the actress speaks about her children, the advice she has for them, nepotism, and her journey as a single mother. Excerpts:
When your daughter Alaya F wanted to enter into films, how did you advise her?
My entire motive, as a parent, has always been to empower my children, guide them, yet never control them. I've always told them that they will always have us; we will provide them with a roof over their head, food to eat, clothes to wear, and the best education, because it is our obligation. But if they want luxuries like cars and other fancy stuff, they have to go out there and earn it for themselves. The path they choose to do so is their choice. There's no pressure whatsoever; they can change their job five times if they so want. I'm here to empower them, follow their journey and dreams. I tell them that they are fortunate to be in a position where they don’t have to work for their daily needs. So, they can go out, follow their passions, and make it into something that is a wonderful income source. My daughter initially chose business, then decided to do film direction, after which she got into acting--but whatever path she has chosen, she has always given her 100%. It is something that my mother taught me, and I passed on to them: If you give your 100% to your passion and conviction, it has to be a success. Most importantly, because of that, you will be so damn proud of yourself. I've seen that girl wake up at five in the morning, put on her shoes, and attend every single class--acting, dancing, acrobatics, gymnastics, Pilates--name a class and she has done it. She has prepared herself well, just to be able to say that it doesn't matter if her film does well or not, at least she knows she gave it her 100% So, I think that, to me, is very crucial.
