Derek Chauvin found guilty, and Petersburg reacts. Here is what you are saying about it.
From 'relieved' to a 'clarion call for justice,' everyone says the verdict is not the end of the road but just another stop in the path to racial equality
The Progress-Index
The Petersburg area exhaled with relief late Tuesday afternoon as a Minneapolis jury convicted former police officer Derek M. Chauvin on two counts of murder and one count of manslaughter in the Memorial Day 2020 death of George Floyd.
Initial reaction from Petersburg area leaders and citizens is that while they applaud the verdicts as correct, that does not mean that racial inequity in justice has suddenly been solved. Del. Lashrecse D. Aird, D-Petersburg, who led several portions of the Democratic-led police-reform package through the General Assembly this year and last, told The Progress-Index that the work is just beginning.
