Orlando police officers are being hailed as heroes after helping rescue people trapped inside a submerged car.In the body camera video, one officer asks a young boy his name. He responds that it’s Gabriel.“Gabriel, I need you to come to me. The fire department is going to get your brother and dad, OK?” the officer can be heard saying.“Please just help them,” Gabriel says back.The car landed upside down in a retention pond at Lee Vista Boulevard and Vista East Parkway shortly before 7:30 p.m. on Dec. 10 with a father and his two young sons inside.Gabriel tells Officer Mackenzie Greene that his four-year-old brother is still in the car, as well as his father. A good Samaritan kept the 4-year-old's head above water, while Orlando Police Department officers and Orlando Fire Dive Team performed rescue efforts."Mr. Diaz he called 911, he also went into the water and held the child's head above water before we got there,” officer Tyler Smith said."Your heart definitely sinks to the bottom of your stomach whenever you see that, especially when a car flips upside down," Cpl. Manarnford Johnson said.Greene said she was able to reach through the car and grab the toddler’s arm, doing their best to keep him above water."Eventually we cut him out with, like a seatbelt cutter to get him out of his car's seat and seat belt,” Smith said.“I don't think it hit me until all three people were out and we took a deep breath,” Greene said. “We got them all out.”Everyone went to the hospital in good condition. The officers hope to get a chance to meet the family soon. As far as heroes, Johnson says:“I don't necessarily think about it being heroic. I think about it as being a good person and I would hope someone would do the same for me if I was stuck in the water.”
