We know a bit more about the circumstances that led to the announced retirement of the head of the State Board of Elections.
Steven Sandvoss announced he will be stepping down after he was placed on administrative leave following the revelation that he had been the target of an online extortion attempt. The Chicago Tribune reports that Sandvoss sent members of the elections board a letter indicating that he had exchanged “flirtatious” messages and sent a picture to someone he met online. He said that he was subsequently sent a message threatening to “ruin” him if he didn’t pay $3,000. Sandvoss says he did not make any payments and says the threats eventually stopped.
