New Details Emerge On Elections Chief Departure

By WMAY Newsroom Apr 23, 2021 2:24 PM We know a bit more about the circumstances that led to the announced retirement of the head of the State Board of Elections. Steven Sandvoss announced he will be stepping down after he was placed on administrative leave following the revelation that he had been the target of an online extortion attempt. The Chicago Tribune reports that Sandvoss sent members of the elections board a letter indicating that he had exchanged “flirtatious” messages and sent a picture to someone he met online. He said that he was subsequently sent a message threatening to “ruin” him if he didn’t pay $3,000. Sandvoss says he did not make any payments and says the threats eventually stopped.

Capitol Fax.com - Your Illinois News Radar » Kinda anti-climactic

- Just Me 2 - Friday, Apr 23, 21 @ 8:57 am: I’m not sure he really did anything wrong, certainly not termination. Someone contacted him and they started chatting, and when he realized something was amiss he cut the person off and reported it. Might depend a lot on what “a picture” means. “Stupid? Yes. Unredeemable? Doubtful.” But this is exactly the sort of bad judgment that prompts the feds to pull somebody’s security clearance. I suspect that was a factor. – MrJM Isn’t this a similar situation to what Ron Sandack resigned over? ==Sandvoss told board members that “at no time did I indicate (to the person online) that I worked” for the elections board.==
