Forward. You see, Donald Trump is stuck in the past. But its like i say to my husband, doug, when he leaves his phone at the chilis. We are not going back you know, Trump And Vance are weird. All right . They want the government to control what you do in your bedroom, what books you read. You know, in minnesota, we have a saying, mind your Damn Business we also have another saying in minnesota, my nuts froze to the park bench. They say that me blaming the democrats for inciting violence is the pot calling the kettle black. Frankly, i didnt know the kettle was black until very recently. I thought the kettle was indian. Then it decided to turn black. I miss Joe Biden oh, joe. We miss Joe Biden, folks. What we wouldnt give to have him stand next to me and be old. We had this in the bag, but then they did a switcharoo and swapped Out Biden with kamavala. Hello, it is me, Jd Vance. How much do you love Donald Trump . He told me, youre like a son to me. I dont like you, and im stuck with you. Im sure you heard what the liberal media has been saying about me. Im a creep. Im a weirdo. What the hell am i doing here . Im getting this crowd hot woo. A lot of people forget im president. Including me. Folks, we still have work to do, no joke. I am being serious right now, come on. Guess what . By the way, the fact of the matter is, the rich dont pay their pair share. They have to pay their fair share. We have to build back the better, build back the better, the best, cant believe its not butter thank you, Joe Biden. Thank you so much. I just want to say, thank you, Joe Biden for putting country first and handing over the reins. I didnt want to Saturday Night live with an extended cold open to kick off its 50th season. Maya rudolph reprising her portrayal of Vice President Heart race. So good. Jim gaffigan taking on governor tim walz. So good, right . Oh, my gosh. They all really were. Donald trump and Jd Vance. A cameo by Dana Carvey as president Joe Biden. So good. It was fun. Good Morning And Welcome to Morning Joe. It is monday, september 30th. With us, we have the host of Way Too Early, white House Bureau Chief at politico, Jonathan Lemire. U. S. Special correspondent for Bbc News, Katty Kay is with us. And Nbc News national Affairs Analyst and a partner and chief political columnist at puck, John Heilemann. In a moment, well get to major developments out of The Middle East following israels killing of the leader of hezbollah. Richard haass and admiral James Stavridis are standing by with their analysis. First, five weeks to go until the November Election. Former president Donald Trump spent the Weekend Campaigning in several key Battleground States and used extreme and dark rhetoric to attack his opponent, Vice PresidentKamala Harris. Really is doubling down, if possible. I think its a meltdown. I dont think you call it a double down. I mean, ill let you say we can play the clips. Again, even republicans are attacking him. As Jonathan Lemire said, you know, quietly, theyre getting really worried right now. He reiterated his pledge to go after people who cheat in the election. He said one violent day of policing will end crime in america. And continued to push misinformation about haitian immigrants in springfield, ohio, in addition to some very odd tangents, i guess more of the weave. Take a look. Kamala is mentally impaired. If a republican did what she did [ applause ] if a republican did what she did, that republican would be impeached and removed from office. Rightfully so. For high crimes and misdemeanors. Joe biden became mentally impaired. Kamala was born that way. She was born that way. And if you think about it, only a Mentally Disabled person could have allowed this to happen to our country. Anybody would know this. Theres something wrong with kamala, and i just dont know what it is. But there is definitely something missing. You know what . Everybody knows it. Shes a stupid person. Stupid person. I dont care. [ applause ] i dont care. If they didnt cheat, i wouldnt even be here today. You know why . I wouldnt have to campaign. Im here only because they cheat. They cheat in this state, especially in philadelphia. I mentioned a couple other areas. For the most part, philadelphia is out of control. Detroit is out of control. Atlanta is out of control. Places are out of control. Out of control. Because if there was no cheating, if god came down from a high and said, i am going to be your Vote Tabulator for this election, i would leave this podium right now because i wouldnt have to speech. We wouldnt have any problem. We have to have a landslide because they cheat so damn much. If we win and when we win, were going to prosecute people that cheat on this election. And if we can, well go back to the last one, too. If were allowed. But were going to prosecute people so at least they know thats going to happen. You know, these are smart people. Theyre not so stupid. But they have to be taught. Now, if you had one really violent day, like a guy like mike kelly, put him in charge, congressman kelly, put him in charge one day. Mike, would you say, right here, hes a great congressman. Would you say, mike, that if you were in charge, youd say, please, dont touch them, dont touch them . Let them rob your store. All these stores go out of business, right . They dont pay rent. City doesnt have money. Its a chain of events. Its so bad. One rough hour, and i mean real rough, the word will get out, and it will end immediately. End immediately. You know . Itll end immediately. The majority of the school cannot speak english in ohio, springfield. They cant speak english. Theyre taking over the schools. Theres nobody that can speak english. And the mayor is looking for interpreters. Isnt that wonderful . How can this happen . Remember, theres a hat thats made that sells like crazy. Oh, theres a fly. Oh, i wonder where the fly came from. [ laughter ] see, two years ago, i wouldnt have had a fly up here. Changing rapidly. We cant take it any longer. Two years ago, i would not have had a fly up here, but things are changing rapidly. I mean, this is republicans obviously are concerned about this. For good reason. Theyre talking about how hes doubling down. Of course, they usually whisper. They usually whisper these things. I wrote some of these notes down. Shes mentally impaired, he says, to the crowds applause. Nice crowd. Shes Mentally Disabled, he says, to crowds applause. Nice crowd. Shes a, quote, stupid person. This actually, John Heilemann, this actually has republicans doing something republicans never do. New york times shows republicans are actually being critical of Donald Trump. Yeah. Republicans Fault Trump over insults to his rival. Front of the national section of the New York times. This is Larry Hogan, who is Running for senate. Thats insulting not only to the Vice President but to people that actually do have mental disabilities. Ive said for years that trumps divisive rhetoric is something that we can do without. Lindsey graham also critical of Donald Trumps statements this weekend. Representative tom emmer, a Minnesota Republican who is helping Jd Vance for the upcoming debate, tried to distance himself. He said, i think we should stick to the issues. Yet, here he goes. John, the question answers itself, i guess. If she were so, quote, stupid, if she were, quote, so mentally impaired, quote, Mentally Disabled, why did she destroy him in a debate for 90 minutes, destroy him, and so much so, he refuses to debate her even on Fox News. Thats number one. If she had this mental condition from birth, why did he give her thousands of dollars in 2014 for her political campaign when she was Running for the united States Senate . Joe, i appreciate that you are interrogating this in this rational way, which is deserves to be interrogated on the rational level in some ways. Of course, because we should hold him to account. But i think part of the dark he announced these speeches would be dark, right . He literally started a couple of them this weekend, lemire, where he said, this is going to be a dark speech. Then he proceeds to uncork the series of these speeches, put them all together. It requires no particularly sophisticated or subtle decoding to see what kind of the common through line is of all these speeches. Theyre extraordinarily racist, and their racist top to bottom. You picked out, joe, a thing i think fits into that rubric. He says, you know, Joe Biden was mentally turned mentally impaired, but Kamala Harris was mentally impaired from birth. You know, she also was, you know she had the racial makeup since birth. Thats the difference between Joe Biden and Kamala Harris. One of them happens to be white. One of them happens to be black. If you go through his comments about where the corruption is, every single place he names where terrible things are happening, things are being stolen, where is the crime the worst . Where is the election being stolen . Where are terrible things happening . Just by happenstance, they happen to be places like philadelphia and milwaukee and cleveland. Every one of them a major urban center of america thats marked, especially in his bases mind, as being overRun by people of color. Of course, the haitian Immigrant Thing has always been racist, but blatantly, outrageously racist. He continues to hold on to that, despite all the debunking of it and so on. I raise this all just to say, some of us on this show, you, others, mika, people at this table, worried or foresaw that when Kamala Harris became the nominee, we were going to have we were likely to have, given Donald Trumps we would have a racist election, more so than before. Donald trumps speeches is a way of talking about whats going to happen, which is, its going to be a brutal, racebased assault on her, her supporters, that part of the democratic party, the coalition of the democratic party. It has been building over these last few weeks as he has floundered. His base, most grotesque comments are coming to the surface. Its ramping up. Itll be a big part of his Closing Argument in this campaign. Lets go through a little more of this. He also suggested that some of the migrants would break into your house and, quote, slit your throats, suggesting, without evidence, that migrants are responsible for more crime. There is factchecking here. He suggested the 13,000 migrants who have Come In, accused of crimes, are all blamed on the biden administration, when, of course, stats show that many of them came in while he was in office. Also, many of them are still in prison. Its not like theyre Running around committing more crimes. Speaking of crimes, he did suggest that there should be an hour of violence, which sounds like the plot of the movie the purge, which is deeply dangerous. Again, we know how his words have inspired violence before, including on but not limited to, January 6th. Certainly his followers are hearing what hes saying. You see it on the screen here. Monsters, vile animals, saying migrants want to rape, pillage, and kill. Deeply offensive rhetoric there. Of course, as john and joe just mentioned, signaling out minoritymajority cities, suggesting his opponent is mentally impaired. Once again, katty, calling for his political opponents to be jailed. Suggesting anyone who opposed him in 2016, 2020, 2024, who might be trying to, quote, rig the election, should be prosecuted. This is an extraordinarily dangerous Closing Argument and vision for america. Yeah. The interesting thing, i guess, against all of this is that the polls are as tight as they are. Gene robinson in his column this morning is asking that question. Why is it so tight . I think while Kamala Harris has the momentum and she is a little bit ahead in most of the polls, if you took an aggregate of them, its really a Neck And Neck race. If you believe the polling, and we dont know if it is reflective of all the people who might end up voting for trump as they did in 2016 but arent telling pollsters that. One area Kamala Harris seems to have caught up with trump is on the economy. Trumps advisors wanted him to focus on the economy, just talk about the economy. That, they say, as the way for him to get ahead. He hasnt done that. The area he is talking about comfortably is immigration, race, and migrants. If you look at the polling, that is where he still holds the strongest lead. His Lead Hasnt eroded on the border and on immigration at all. If you look at particularly polling around hispanic voters and latino voters, they seem to have flipped on the issue of immigration. You wonder whether Donald Trump is actually driving that polling that shows hes still strong on immigration by keeping talking about this, whether hes tapping into something that is new in the electorate, where, clearly, there is a much more conservative approach in the electorate towards immigration and hes tapping into that. I dont know if its even that calculated. It is his Comfort Zone, and thats what hes talking about. You look across the polling, and that is still where he has his strongest hand. I dont see any reason to think hes not going to carry on, beating this drum for the next few weeks. John heilemann, a couple things. First of all, immigration has been an issue since 2016. Time and time again, its been the dog that hasnt barked. Maybe in specific house races, but nationally, it just hasnt. If you look at polling, and if youve looked at polling, his specific positions on immigration, theyre far more extreme than most importants. Americans. It is a lot of noise, racism, and hatred. Not so sure it is going to translate into a victory. As you know, if you ask the Harris Campaign how theyre feeling about the election right now, theyll go, you know, theres sort of a quiet confidence. But theyre like, you know, were tied. Were going to have to work hard if we want to win. You talk to the trump campaign, theres this, like, arrogance, where theyll tell you, oh, weve got it. We have so many pathways to 270. Were fine. The fact is, they might want to get that message to their boss. Because we all know Donald Trump. Donald trump doesnt talk that way when he thinks hes ahead. Donald trump, the more he sees harris catching up in the polls, going ahead in the polls, the more he sees data that shows the Trend Lines are breaking in his direction, the more hostile he gets, the more racist he gets, the more xenophobic he gets, its there. That is his tell. Yes, it is. I mean, entirely his tell. I would add, i mean, i dont think Donald Trump has any deep sense of what some of the more interesting, underlying demographic shifts going on in the polling are, but it is the case that what we are seeing right now, if you look at all the polling, and theres a ton of it out there now, but underneath the surface level consensus, which is that the race is incredibly close and we could be headed for maybe the most one of the tightest elections in the modern or any American History, at the electoral College Level at least, is this interesting trend toward racial depolarization in what were seeing in terms of support of the two candidates. Which is to say, Kamala Harris is performing better right now with white voters than Joe Biden the final results of Joe Bidens election in 2020, than Joe Biden did with white voters. Shes doing a little worse than Joe Biden did with nonwhite voters, African American Voters and latino voters. Unexpected turn of events, obviously. Part of that is that trump has been performing better with latino voters and young African American men. One of the reasons, joe, to your point about the confidence, the quiet confidence of people in the Harris Campaign is that because she is overperforming relative to biden with white voters, that is the reason she has been steadily cementing this small but persistent lead in states that, a month ago, people thought she might be weaker in. Which is to say, the Blue Wall states, where in pennsylvania, her polling is solidified. Her polling in michigan and wisconsin, again, call but persistent leads in the Blue Wall states. You win those three, plus nebraska, too, and youre done. 270, a narrow victory. That was always Joe Bidens easiest path. It now looks like the safest path for her. That goes to this pattern of racial depolarization. I dont think trump understands any of the things i just said, but i think he is worried about the fact, i think he knows the headline of that. Which is the Blue Wall is solidifying for her. That was how he won in 2016. That was because of white voters. I think part of this racebased Fear Rhetoric is that, on some instinctive level informed by the top lines of polling, he thinks white people arent scared enough in these places in the upper midwest. You talk about haitians taking over springfield. In a lot of the speeches he gave over the weekend, they were in those states where he is trying to scare the crap out of white voters to try to get them back. He cant believe Kamala Harris is doing as well with them as she is. Again, saying theyre going to come to your kitchen, to your house, and slit your throat. Thats where hes gone. Can you imagine . First of all, its hard to project this on to any other country because of the unique place and the unique role that the united states plays in global affairs. But could you imagine us following a campaign in the uk, in france, in any major industrialized country, where somebody who is tied is Running around talking about the eating of dogs and cats . Talking about people coming to your houses and slitting your throats. Talking about a day of celebrating a day of violence. Talking about being a dictator for a day. I mean, we could go down the list. I think because everybody here is so close to it, i think, at times, people dont realize how crazy. And dangerous. And dangerous this has become. And, yes, what our democratic allies, our nato allies have to be thinking when they say, wait a second, hes tied after hes calling somebody, like, mentally impaired and stupid and talking about the eating of dogs and cats and talking about, hey, we really need a day of violence in america . And, hey, im going to be dictator for a day in america . Its crazy. Talk about destroying the brand. Were going to continue to discuss the stakes and the state of the race. But now to israel, which has killed the longtime leader of hezbollah. Israeli officials announced the death of nasrallah early saturday morning. Overnight, the idf flattened three Apartment Buildings in southern beirut. Officials claim the central headquarters of the militant group was underground. The idf says several other senior hezbollah commanders were also killed in the massive attack. Hezbollah later confirmed Nasrallahs Death in a statement, and iran vowed revenge, putting israel on high alert for any possible retaliation. Current and former u. S. Officials tell Nbc News, the biden administration was blindsided by the israeli attack. Saying the president was infuriated with the timing of it all. Still, the president called the strike a measure of justice, saying under Nasrallahs Leadership, hezbollah was responsible for killing hundreds of americans. Lets bring in President Emeritus of the council on foreign relations, Richard Haass. He is author of the weekly Newsletter Home and away, available on substack. And former Supreme Allied Commander of nato, retired four Star Navy AdmiralJames Stavridis. He is chief international analyst for Nbc News. Admiral, lets talk about the logistics of this first of all. I mean, you look at everything thats happened to hezbollah over the past several weeks. It is very obvious that they did not have the loyalty of the lebanon people. I mean, the sources that had to give all of these hezbollah leaders up, that is remarkable in and of itself. But, secondly, you look at the situation. It looks, in the short term, like a massive, overwhelming israeli victory in the battle, but lets talk about the broader war. Is this going to go back to beirut in the 1980s . What does this mean to an organization like hezbollah . I watched the speech last night of the Acting Leader of hezbollah, naim qasem. He was effectively the Vice President. Picture an evening where Vice PresidentKamala Harris is broadcasting from an undisclosed location, mourning the death of president Joe Biden, secretary defense, head of the cia, the head of the state department. Its a shocking moment for hezbollah. By the way, when President Biden says blood on his hands, barely gets at what nasrallah did to America Decade after decade. Including, if i may be personal, my first classmate from annapolis who was killed in action. It was a Marine Captain who died at the beirut barracks bombing. So this is a good moment that nasrallah has been taken off the chess board. Joe, to the broader question here, i think the israelis, and i would caution them, need to be careful of a bit of over confidence here. Hezbollah may feel to them like a paper tiger. You know, theyve been dug into lebanon, to your point, for decades. Theyve held that country like a hostage. The israelis need to be careful that they dont overreach here, but its been an incredibly successful couple of weeks. And final thought here, your question is the right one, will this Go Wider . I define wider as iran gets into the fight in a certainly, theres going to be more combat up to and close to the latani river, 18 miles from the border. But its iran getting involved. I think the Mullahs In Tehran will fight to the last lebanese. Theyll fight to the last hamas. Theyll fight to the last houthi. I dont see iran going big here. I think its probably 80 chance we dont see a wider war, but look for the israelis to grind it out, probably move north on the ground, and lets hope they dont push for more than that. You know, richard, in Social Media, theres a Running-gag'>Running Gag, im old enough to remember, and then somebody brings up something that happened, like, four weeks ago. In this case, im old enough to remember, you are, too, something that happened over how ye 40 years ago. A very strong, a very powerful idf went into lebanon with overwhelming force. They achieved what they wanted to achieve quickly. They got to the suburbs of beirut. Then all Hell Broke Loose, and they were stuck in the quagmire to end all quagmires. Im curious, to the Admirals Point, about the israelis needing to be cautious as they move forward. Let me just ask you, what evidence do you have that this Wont End up looking like the early 1980s if israel moves in with a Ground War into lebanon . Joe, there is a chance the israelis will add a Ground Force to what theyre doing in lebanon, but i do not think youll see anything like an occupation. I can see Ground Forces going in but also coming out. What theyre doing here, its quite interesting, joe. What i think were seeing is the systematic targeting by israel of iranian instruments of power. You know, after things wound down to some extent In Gaza, it has freed the israelis up to go after hezbollah in the north. Were also seeing them go after the houthis in yemen. I think the israelis have decided they can somewhat safely do that, because as the admiral said, iran is not particularly anxious to have a direct war with israel. But it does give iran a real dilemma. They either have to go in and help their proxies, or theyre exposed and they know it. I dont think they will in a big way. Actually, theres a lot of voices in israel that are itching to go after iran. Theres a little bit of, if you remember al haig, when he was secretary of the state, wanted to go after cuba, to go to the source. Theres a whole school of thought in israel, enough with fighting these proxies. Lets go after iran. Im sure iran is going to give them the chance. I guess for the foreseeable future, youll see israel go into lebanon but not on occupation, not repeat the mistakes of 40 years ago, and try to weaken these instruments of iranian power. That will, again, make iran a little bit more careful, the israeli thinking goes, because its been hezbollah more than Anything Else that has held Israel At Bay. So much of israel was vulnerable to the rockets of hezbollah. The past year or so, i Cant Stop but wonder if theyre being passive in the face of one attack after another against their interest. If theyre not being passive because theyre afraid of a fullblown war that will allow israel to go in and destroy their nuclear program. Whether theyre deciding they will sacrifice hamahamas, hezbo, these terror groups they funded for decades because they dont want to rock the boat. They dont want to take their eye off the ball, which right now is all about building their nuclear program and going nuclear before israel or the united states comes in and destroys their program. Yeah. One of the things that iranian leadership feels has kept them safe from being attacked by israel over the last few years is the fact that they have this nuclear program. But as richard just said, there are people within israel who are itching to take on iran, would like to do so. They have to balance those two factors at the moment. Thats why theyre playing it cautiously. As you say, theyve been passive, surprisingly passive perhaps, signaling the missile attacks they were launching, telling the israelis what was coming, in a way perhaps we couldnt have anticipated. Admiral, the extraordinary events of the last week, where does that leave gaza . Does netanyahu, having done what hes done in lebanon against hezbollah, now have a certain amount of Wiggle Room with some of the right on his coalition to perhaps i mean, this is the optimistic scenario to perhaps now focus on a Ceasefire DealIn Gaza . Or is that being too pollyannaish about the situation . Id call it being cautiously optimistic. I agree. I think at some point, to Richard Haass point, the israelis dont want to occupy gaza, just like they dont want to occupy southern lebanon. Theyve seen how that turned out. Up north. They dont want to occupy gaza and incur the Reconstruction Cost, which is going to be massive. There is room, particularly as the israeli parliament comes back into session here in about two weeks, there might be some room to start talking about a kind of arab peacekeeping force. Were still a ways away from that, katty, but i think thats the right space to watch over the next few weeks. Jonathan lemire, if you could dig into the Administrations Response to the events of the past 48 hours and where it goes from here. Certainly, we heard from a number of american officials saying no tears will be shed for the leader of hezbollah, Nasrallahs Death. He has american blood on his hands. But there is real concern about what could happen next. Whether this does escalate further. We should note some reporting out of the Wall Street Journal within the last hour or so, that israeli Special Forces have started carrying out targeted raids into southern lebanon, gathering intel into what they think would be a possible Ground Incursion that could come as soon as this week. Maybe not an allout war, but some ground assault, richard, appears to be on the horizon. I want to take you where mika led this. This idea of american response. Last week, we had Secretary Of State blinken on the show. He was talking about how they thought they had been close to a deal, a Ceasefire Deal, between israel and hezbollah. That, of course, was not the case. I reported out on friday and over the weekend, Real American Anger again at netanyahu, telling them one thing and then going back and doing something entirely the opposite. Perhaps after speaking to the farright members of his cabinet. We have seen this since october 7th. President biden and the americans have given israel guidance. Theyve offered israel advice. Time and again, israel has ignored them. What power does the united states still have over Benjamin Netanyahu right now . Jonathan, the administration had a much stronger case against what the israelis were doing In Gaza. The difference is, hamas In Gaza, you may hate it for all sorts of reasons, but it is a national liberation force. It can pretend to represent palestinian nationalism. Going after them, the Israelis Cant Win that struggle. The administration has a case for arguing for a ceasefire there. Hezbollah, hezbollah is not a national liberation force, doesnt represent lebanon. Hezbollah is simply an instrument, a tool of iranian power in The Middle East. No government, not just this israeli government, no government in israel or anywhere else could live with what hezbollah was doing. Shelling israel regularly. Making it impossible for 60,000, 70,000 people to live in their homes. Actually, while the administration is right to push at times for a ceasefire In Gaza, one thing they could have done and should have done more, perhaps, to bring it about, in the north, i question it. There is zero chance the israelis are going to listen, so the administration has to ask themselves, do we want to look fecklessly asking for a ceasefire . Overwhelmingly, israelis support what Bibi Netanyahu is doing in lebanon. His Favorability Ratings are going through the roof. Why . What he is doing is widely popular. I think the administration should cool it on the Ceasefire Talk in the north. I think israel has some legitimacy in what it is doing there. The united states should never advocate for paths that are questionable on the merits and simply not going to come about. Makes us look weak. Admiral, could you give us the specifics so people understand . When we talk about hezbollah, were not talking about hamas. Talk about the number of rockets that they have, hezbollah, that they have, how many they fire at israel on a daily basis. Why is israel, as richard said, israelis would be, like, hell yeah, go after hezbollah. Even a lot of those who said we need a Peace Deal and to rebuild gaza, get the hostages home, why these two were so different for israelis. Yeah, lets start with the Missile Capability of hezbollah. Again, as richard says absolutely correctly, they are merely a creature of tehran. They built an arsenal of somewhere between 130,000 and 140,000 surfacetosurface missiles that can range the entire country of israel. They could massively overwhelm iron dome, for example. Theyre distributed throughout lebanon. Many are longer range. You know, we talk about down In Gaza, the Tunnel Complex was really the center of gravity. Up north, its that Missile Force is the center of gravity. I agree with richard, the israelis ought to continue to pound away and eliminate that threat. Id invite listeners to think how we in the united states would feel if in tijuana, mexico, there was thousands and thousands of rockets and A Hundred a day were landing on our soccer fields, killing our children, which happened in israel about a month ago. So there is every reason to continue up north. Id encourage the israelis to focus on that Missile Force. Special forces, cyber can help here. Go to the sea and Come In from the seaboard side. Theres a lot the israelis can do without occupying lebanon. Four star retired Navy AdmiralJames Stavridis, thank you. The restless wave, a novel of the united states navy, Goes On Sale next tuesday, october 8th. Well be talking about that. Richard haass, thank you, as well, very much for your insight this morning. What usually happens in hurricanes is they pick up a lot of steam over the water. They hit the land, then they quickly dissipate. Youll have some tornadoes here, some tornadoes there, a lot of rain. Not a whole lot of flooding. But the pain that people are experiencing right now all across the south, especially in western carolina, is so heartbreaking. North carolina is so heartbreaking, also south carolina. Asheville, North Carolina, my god. South carolina bad, as well. Asheville completely wiped off the map. Tennessee. Listen, if you want to help those people who are suffering so terribly right now, you can do that by giving to the american red cross, world central kitchen, gofundme, the salvation army, save the children, the united way, americares. Please help the people in the carolinas right now. Really devastating. Of course, all along the florida coast, all along the florida West Coast, cedar key, a lot of places just completely hammered. Some places decimated. Were getting a clearer look at the damage from tropical Storm Helene after the storm barreled through at least six states, leaving behind major devastation. Turning neighborhoods into rivers. This morning, at least 89 people are dead across florida, georgia, south carolina, virginia, and tennessee. In western North Carolina alone, at least 30 people were killed in one county due to catastrophic flooding. In some affected areas, power is being restored, but more than 2 Million customers remain without electricity in several states. Right now, Search And Rescue operations are still ongoing, as many people remain unaccounted for, leaving families desperate to find their loved ones. Later this week, President Biden will travel to areas impacted by helene to survey the damage as Response Efforts continue. At a rally yesterday, Vice PresidentKamala Harris took a moment to discuss the impact of the storm and to thank the first responders. And i know that everyone here sends their thoughts and prayers for the folks who have been so devastated by that hurricane and the ensuing events in florida, in georgia, the carolinas, and other impacted states. And we know that so many have been impacted. Some have died. But i want to thank everyone for doing everything you can to think about them, send them your thoughts, send them your prayers. I want to thank the first responders who have done so much. [ applause ] and we will stand with these communities for as long as it takes to make sure that they are able to recover and rebuild. Donald trump, meanwhile, will head to valdosta, georgia, to survey the damage there from tropical Storm Helene. Over the weekend, he criticized the biden Administrations Response to the storm. That all comes as he down played the threat posed by Climate Change during a rally in pennsylvania yesterday. I havent heard. Mike, i havent heard. They dont ever talk about the environment anymore. You know why . Mike is saying, dont talk about it now. No, its one of the great scams of all time. You know why they dont talk about it . Because people arent buying it anymore. You know, thats just a lie. Its yet another lie. Not only, Jonathan Lemire, are people buying the fact that, you know, 19 of the 20 hottest years on record have been the last 19 or so years, but talk to republicans who RunInsurance Companies, that look at the numbers of how much storms are costing Insurance Companies, are costing the government. Its devastating. In so many places, People Cant even get Property Insurance anymore because Insurance Companies have been so overwhelmed by the Radical Change in climate over the past 20 years. You know who else believes in Climate Change . An overwhelming majority of farmers. According to polls, theyve seen the devastation and how their livelihoods have been damaged by the change, the Radical Change in climate over the past 20, 30 years. Yeah, Climate Change is real. Polling suggests more republicans are believing it, as well. We should also note, as trump there claims and no one thinks about it, that it was Donald Trump who supported efforts to Shut Down the federal government just last week. If the government Shut Down, think of what the federal response would be to this storm now, for people slowing down that much further the people who desperately need help. We should note, President Biden is going to speak on the storm later today. White house says he will visit once its safe for him to do so and he doesnt draw away resources that are badly needed elsewhere right now. Vice president harris cutting a West CoastCampaign Trip short. Shes also back in washington. Her team, joe and mika, says she will visit when the time is right. There you go. Coming up, were going to bring you the highlights from Yesterdays Nfl games. Plus, the stunning performance from alabamas 17yearold, 17, Wide Receiver who led the team to victory against georgia. Paul finebaum, Mike Lupica, and Pablo Torre join us with key takeaways next on Morning Joe. Were back in two minutes. The moment i met him i knew he was my soulmate. Soulmates. Soulmate [giggles] why do you need me . [laughs sarcastically] but then we switched to tmobile 5g home internet. And now his attention is spent elsewhere. But im thinking of her the whole time. Thats so much worse. Why is that thing in bed with you . This is where it gets the best signal from the Cell Tower ive tried everywhere else in the house theres always a new excuse. Well if we got xfinity you wouldnt have to mess around with the connection. Therapys tough, huh . Mmm. Its like a lot about me. [laughs] a Home Router should never be a home wrecker. Oo this is a good book title. From 58, it is good panthers rush, lots of time. Theres Jamarr Chase with the catch. Breaking tackles, chas down the sidelines. Panthers chasing chase. They wont catch him. 49ers back out of it. Given time, its picked off by Warner Warner climbs the ladder to get it, and now he sprints down the sideline. Inside the ten. Throw it again. Over the middle, and it is caught Touchdown Jayden daniels scanning, throwing, end zone, touchdown washington. Another knockout punch. Theres no timeouts left because of that last Run. A play fake. Shroud on the move. Touchdown darnold, brought by jones to the end zone, and caught jefferson, that is a touchdown. Wow. Those were some of the biggest moments from Yesterdays Action around the national football league. Lets bring in bestselling Author And VeteranSports AuthorMike Lupica. And Msnbc Contributor and host on meadowlark media, Pablo Torre. Jayden daniels, welcome to the nfl. For those who fell asleep yesterday, hes had the greatest start to a Fourgame Career in the nfl at quarterback by Completion Percentage that weve ever seen. What does this mean . Hes been more accurate than everybody, including Peyton Manning in 08, Tom Brady in 07. Those guys won the mvp that year. Look, i want to pump the brakes a tad because im throwing big names at you, joe, but jayden daniels, and the way that people in your area are feeling around the dmv. There is this weird Exorcism Vibe of, is this for real . Is the new regime, is this new kid actually as good as were seeing . These Offensive Drives look easy, easy for this kid from lsu, joe. Yeah. Im looking at some of the other scores, and i have to say, Joe Burrow gets a win. Also, Mike Lupica, what has happened to the Philadelphia Eagles . I mean, they started 111 last year. Completely collapsed. That collapse continues even now. The defense just absolutely horrible. Yeah, every time you think theyve turned it around, they havent turned it around. Jalen hurts makes big turnovers now, which he wasnt doing when they were on their way to the super bowl. Saquon barkley was supposed to restore order to their offense. He had a pretty decent game yesterday, but at one point, i think the Commonwealth Of Pennsylvania was down about 9,000 to nothing yesterday, before the steelers and eagles came back. Joe, i want to say this, with respect to my friend pablo, i do think youre able to process complicated names and concepts in sports. Very kind of you. That is very kind of you. Lets talk about, pablo, lets talk about the jets. Yeah. The longsuffering jets. Well get to that name, yeah. One of my favorite memes was a very bad version of my heart will go on, showing all of these miserable things happening to a person around the house. Its the life of a jets fan. Lined up to beat the hapless broncos, you knew what was going to happen, didnt you, pablo . Yeah. Look, Aaron Rodgers, who was seen on the sideline with a towel over his face. Whatever the opposite of The Shroud Of Turin was in terms of ho holiness, that was playing out at this building. This was an Offense Led by Aaron Rodgers that couldnt score a touchdown. Post game, its the perfect thing. Covering New York sports forever, its the backbiting, the Sub Tweeting of the head coach, robert saleh. Is it the offensive line, the cadence, Aaron Rodgers problem . This is a day that rodgers they they say, this is when Donald Trump became president. This is when rodgers became jets quarterback. A Classic Formula of misery and incompetence. Exactly. Joe . And, of course, there was bickering going on on the sideline last week. Again, its really a shame. By the way, a Hat Tip to ceedee lamb, and im dead serious, after a bad week a Couple Week ago. Press conference, took it, was, i thought, a man about it. Said, hey, i screwed up. The loss is on me. I didnt act the way i wanted to act. Im going to do better in the future. Words you will never hear Aaron Rodgers, Mike Lupica, under any circumstances. I was think, why cant the jets find a quarterback like sam darnold, joe and pablo . If they only had that. 40. Remarkable, haunted by ghosts. Finally, well get to the game of the week with Alabama Georgia, which Mike Lupica correctly said may have been one of the greatest regular season games of all time. But im curious, pablo. Ravens and the bills, it raises A Thousand questions about, you know, what kind of team are the ravens . They have looked great the past Couple Weeks. Josh allen once again going to be left at the altar this year . Look, i think the cautionary aspect here is that styles make fights. Its true in boxing, true in the nfl. The bills, their secondary, their Line Backers and safeties, in particular, are just a weakness. When you have that weakness, what youre seeing here, Lamar JacksonRunning for a zillion yards. Derrick henry, who is, you know, a Ford F150 with ferrari engine, had the longest untouched touchdown Run. 87 yards, in Ravens History in this game. Its a bad matchup. In a league, and this is the larger theme, in a league where everybody can seemingly be horrible on any given sunday. There is great immediate i dont Care Mediocrity here. The number of 22 teams is something. Lets turn now to the College Game on saturday many people are calling one of the greatest College Games in quite some time. Lets bring in Espn Commentator Paul finebaum. Paul, you and i have been following alabama a very long time. I wonder how you can win one of the biggest, one of the most epic College Football games of all time, and go away as an Alabama Fan Feeling like you may have lost. I mean, so many questions raised in the second half of that game. So many stars made in the first half of that game. They are number one, but i kind of guess as a coach, its a dream scenario. A win is a win is a win. But you get to show two quarters of miserable play by your team to inspire them for future games. Just for those of you who did not see it, and i cant imagine how Anyone Wouldnt have watched, alabama had a 28point Lead over georgia, which won two out of the last three national championships. But, joe, to your point, i dont think Kalen Deboer, the new alabama coach, will be overly concerned. One of my heros in journalism, Mike Lupica, peering over me, what im about to say, but would it be blasphemous to say that it looks like Kalen Deboer is coaching better than Nick Saban did a year ago . No, you cant say that. I wanted to try that out. Im getting scored here from the peanut gallery. Come on. He has been flawless since the day he got there, joe. Im not kidding. You know that. To pull this win off with saban sitting in the cheap seats, so to speak, against kirby smart, who Just Cannot beat alabama. I mean, this is the best coach in College Football right now. His record is abysmal to alabama. What is it, 17 against alabama, something like that . I think its 16 now. 16. Theyre all big games. These arent chub games either. No, no, theyre all massive games. Theyre all some of the greatest games that i have seen. I go back to the s. E. C. Championship game five, six, seven years ago. Just barely won. But theyre all great games. I have to say, mike, yes, the first half alabama team, Mike Lupica, the first half, i havent seen a team click like that. I do think Jalen Milroe probably put himself up comfortably in the first three or four picks of the Nfl Draft next year if he continues to play well. That said, the second half, you know, alabama was back on its heels. All the things that worked in the first half, the blitzing, stopped. All of the offensive, you know, attacks stopped. They got conservative, and they almost lost the game. Yeah, joe and i were talking about it after the game, paul. I couldnt believe that alabama kept going up and snapping the ball with, like, 20 seconds still left on the play clock. No clock management. The greatness of this game to me is you can only come pair it to Championship Games of the past. This was Vince Young against sc. This was alabama clemson. Jalen milroe had more total yards than Vince Young had that night against sc when they stopped sc. Wow. To come back after he loses the lead and throw the ball down The Field to win the game, i said to joe after the game, if wed seen that milroe against michigan, alabama would be defending national champs now. No doubt about it. Listen, mika wants more sports. You guys stay right there. Yeah. Were going to keep talking. I want pablos take on the Alabama Game. But right now, lets bring in Roger Bennett with what he says is real football. Nbc Sports Soccer Analyst and founder of men in blazers, media networks Roger Bennett. Quite a weekend for epl football, as well. The Premier League is back, joe. Roll tide, mika. I know you love charles bukowski. The danger of Wild Horses over the hills, but football doesnt stop. Joe, should we start in london . Chelsea. We should. A team under Dodgers Owner Todd burley, appear to be turning chaos into order. Like a visit to the Container Store in the most delirious way. They face the seagulls of brighton. 42 thumping. In a game where history was made by 22yearold cole palmer. He became the first Human Being ever to score four goals in onehalf of Premier League football. Went full lockout inside 20 minutes. The face of a medieval cowherd, the Football Brain of a nobel Prize Winner for physics. Unbelievable. Its like watching eminem in 8 mile losing himself in the music. To the top of the table. Arsenal Playing ChicagoWhite House equivalent leicester city. Shocked to concede a twogoal lead to this finish by justin james. Best j. J. Whoa oh, my god, mika, if that doesnt make you feel alive. The game went to the death. Little Belgium Trossard said, hold me closer, tiny dancer, and prodded off the defender in the 94th minute. Arsenal won 42. May the hope not be false hope. The raider says it will. The top of the table, your liverpool, joe, Boston Red sox owned liverpool, in their first year under new management. Babyheaded, dutch, slott, there he is. Like major League Baseball treated the oakland as fans. Beautiful, beautiful, mikas favorite player, Mo Salah from the spot to extract a 21 win. My god, he is so handsome. Theyve won five of six. Top of the table. The season is closer than the New York times Siena College poll, isnt it, too close to call, joe. You have bama at number one. Liverpool top of the Premier League. Roll tide. How you feeling, joe . Nervous. Always nervous. I dont even understand whats happening. Ill learn liverpools Managers Name maybe mid season. Roger bennett, as always, thank you. Very good to see chelsea back up there again. Looks like theyre turning things around. May the Chicago White sox rise again, joe. And may they rise again, roger. Courage for wearing that jersey. Okay, bye. Pablo, what was your takeaway in the Alabama Georgia game . You did not enjoy this nearly as much as i thought you would. For the 280 being squandered. No. Mika, What Mika Teased is the story to me. There is a 17yearold Kid at Wide Receiver named ryan williams. Oh amazing like nothing i have seen before at that age, at that position. Ever. Bad ninja movie, like crashing into Each Other . What are we doing . He spins. He spins. He dances. He spins. Ive never seen the spin before. You know i can dance. You know i can dance. I mean, have you ever, i mean, paul finebaum, 17yearold Kid. That, of course, made the story fascinating from the start. But, mika, again, a very casual observer of sports, or sport as roger might say, walks into the Family Room and immediately points and its like the first time i saw zidane play, i yelled, who is that . She did the same thing after seeing our 17yearold Superstar Turn pirouettes. Just extraordinary. Amazing. Look at that. What is better . Literally there is an even better one coming up. Makes georgia players Run into themselves. Paul, what a find. Joe, if there is a better Run coming up, id like to see it. Thats one of the greatest plays i have ever seen. Ever. Everybody in unison, lets all say, hes only 17. Thats the new dRunk game in america. Weve heard it a few times on Saturday Night. But he is. When saban retired, joe, he decided to renege on his commitment. He started looking around. He nearly went to auburn and georgia. Kalen deboer, to his credit, was able to bring him back. It is one of the greatest performances ever. I know, joe, youre a typical alabama fan, you expect to win every game 280. But be thankful for this win. This was pretty precious. It puts alabama back at number one, which is a usual spot for alabama. Incredibly good shape as we navigate this new 12team playoff. Yeah, im grateful for the win. I also, when i was Running campaigns and was ahead by 30 points, id be freaking out. I mean, you never relax until its over. Its early in the season. But again, if i were a coach, you know, you want to teach winning. These guys won the biggest game on the calendar. Made a lot of mistakes. If im a coach, i like that. I like having that to hold over their head. Replay the film over and over again. Why did you do this . How are we going to stop this from happening next time . But, yeah, deboer, it really is crazy, paul, then ill let you go, really is crazy, just the way he holds himself on the sideline. Pretty much a Zen Master until you tackle his Wide Receiver on an out route. I know. Listen, we knew he was good. He played in the national Championship Game last year and lost to michigan. But, you know, winning at washington is different than winning at alabama in this setting. This was the biggest game of the year. It may not end up being the biggest game of the year, but with everything on the line, i have never seen that before. Now, he inherited a very good football team. Still, to withstand that pressure, this game was a lot more about the other guy, kirby smart, who we all, we leading the parade, proclaimed as the new saban. Now, hes 01 against the guy who took sabans place. No doubt about it. Espn commentator paul finebaum, thank you very much for being on this morning. Thanks so much, paul. Im going to give you a call. I know there are a lot of people that listen to you that are big fans of Morning Joe. Oh. Lets Talk Baseball now. Mike lupica a lot of sports. Its a lot of sports. I didnt plan for it. Im glad the red sox and red sox ended up. 500, third place. But the team, youve got to be looking at it right now. Detroit, rock city, baby. Detroit tigers on fire since july. Hitch has done an unbelievable job with an incredibly young team. I looked it up, joe. The average age of the team he threw out there last week was 25 years old. Looks like they have one of the best pitchers in the world. They have to play the astros in the first round, and the astros are really good. Might be set up to go back to the League Championship Series again. But the Wild Card here literally and figuratively are the detroit tigers, who have who were eight games under. 500. I think still in august. Theyve made this kind of Run to make the playoffs. Stunning. Its a Fun Story in a great baseball city. Yeah, the tigers Run eclipsed what the royals did, who lost 100 games last year and in the playoffs this year. Never happened before either. Pablo, The Field is not quite set. We have an unusual doubleheader today. Oh, boy. Go mets. Braves and mets playing two in atlanta. Mika is rooting for the mets. Yeah. If they split, both teams go to the playoffs. But if one sweeps the other, the winner of those two games goes, as do the arizona diamondbacks, who are sitting at home watching nervously here. Theres certainly been a lot of chatter and jokes about a gentlemens agreement. Have a split, both go. But i think we know, New York mets fans are fearing the absolute worst. Yeah, theyre incapable of having confidence, as a medical condition. Yeah, theyre not going to engineer a political compromise, which would be fascinating to see. I do like the mets in this, though. I do like the look, to me, the Mlb Playoffs is, as much as anything, a Roulette Wheel at this point, right . As you mentioned, the Wild Card, the short series, the fact that the best team in the regular season tends to not be the World Series champion. If that was the case, of course, john, you know who would win this whole thing. The New York yankees. Mets. No, that was not the answer we were looking for. Eh. Boo. Happens to be the team with Aaron Judge Batting second in front of juan soto. [ boos ] who is counting . Were used to this. This treatment, were used to this. May they lose yet another divisional series. Boo. John heilemann, there is a reason why jets and mets rhyme. If you are a mets fan, right now, your head is under the bed. You are scared to death. Im hoing for a split, but i will tell you, most mets fans are expecting the absolute worst. Yeah. Pablo over here is like, oh, congenitally incapable. No, we are students of history. We have lived. Oh. Mets fans historian, sorry. Mets have good reason, having watched this team collapse, melt down, fall apart. Its amazing they made it through all of september, lemire, and held it together. They had a strong september. Normally, september is the Meltdown Month for the mets. The Fact Theyve held it together, are on the brink of making the playoffs. I do not understand, maybe lupica will explain this to me. Mike, why is it the mets and the braves dont have a little conversation before this doubleheader and say, guys, we are going to compete like hell in game one, and someone is going to win that game. Whoever wins that game will then do what gentlemen would do, say, hey, well do a walkoff, forfeit game two, and well all take the afternoon off. Everyone will get to rest. People play on tuesday. We have screw the diamondbacks. Who cares . Why wouldnt you do that anyway . Mike, think youll see that anyway. If youre the manager of, lets say, the braves, and you win big in the first game, are you going to throw any pitchers youll want to put in the next day . No. I put Pablo Torre on the mound for game two. Warm it up, righty. Rest my arms, mike. Youve all been around politics too long this is sports. The final score actually matters. You cant say they stole it from you, won the game, its over. Lets let the day unfold. It is an unusual situation. If youre a mets fan, yes, you do fear the worst. Go mets. The guy pitched brilliantly and basically kept them alive. Look, if youre a mets fan, what you say is, youre going to lose game one, and the braves will throw Pablo Torre, and youll still lose game two. Thats what would happen, except i would be awesome, for the record. Okay, okay. Mike lupica, Pablo Torre, thank you, both. Go mets. Well see you all soon. Vice president Kamala Harris visited the southern border of arizona on friday after getting a tour and briefings from border officials. Harris gave a Speech Calling for tougher Border Security measures. The Vice President also called out former President Trumps inaction on Border Security. Take a listen. In the four years that Donald Trump was president , he did nothing to fix our broken immigration system. He did not solve the shortage of immigration judges. He did not solve the shortage of border agents. He did not create lawful pathways into our nation. He separated families. He ripped toddlers out of their mothers arms, put children in cages, and tried to end protections for dreamers. He made the challenges at the border worse. And he is still, and he is still fanning the flames of fear and division. And let me be clear, that is not the work of a leader. That is not the work of a leader. And that is, in fact, i think we all believe, an abdication of leadership. You know, recently, Border Crossings lower under Joe Biden and Kamala Harris than they were when Donald Trump left office. You would never hear that on the right. Never. Not on the trump right. The trump right, my lord, the trump campaign, different networks, they literally change those numbers and lie about them with wild abandon. Right. Former President Trump what you also will not hear, sorry to interrupt, but the people, so they remember, Donald Trump killed the toughest Border Security bill in American History. And he bragged about it, then he said to republicans, blame me for killing the toughest Border Security bill in history. A bill that was written by oklahoma consecutive james lankford. He says he didnt use his influence to have senate republicans vote down the bipartisan Border Security bill earlier this year, a lie. Another lie. Weve got video, by the way. Take a listen to those remarks from saturday, followed by what trump has actually said. She says, im the one that talked them out. I wish i had that ability, that i was the one that said, dont vote for it. But i do have a certain say, but i would have never voted for that bill. I noticed a lot of the senators, a lot of the senators are trying to say, respectfully, theyre blaming it on me. I said, thats okay. Please blame it on me, please. Because they were getting ready to pass a very bad bill. Ill tell ya what, a bad bill is id rather have no bill than a bad bill. I think theyre making a terrible mistake if they vote for the bill. Terrible bill for our country. Well, he said it was a terrible bill because it would actually hurt him politically. He did not want to give Joe Biden then and Kamala Harris credit for signing a bipartisan, republicandrafted bill. It would have been the toughest Border Bill ever. It was actually supported by Border Security, by border agents. They asked that the bill pass. It says a lot about republican in office in the house and the senate who take his orders instead of what they claim theyre fighting for. It raises questions up and down the line in terms of trumps hold. Yeah. Joining the conversation, we have the president of the national Action Network and host of msnbcs politics nation, reverend Al Sharpton. And author of how the right lost its mind, charlie sykes. Jonathan lemire, Katty Kay, and John Heilemann are still with us. Jonathan lemire, its interesting, she spoke about that during her speech in arizona, but do the people who are, you know, understanding and following trumps lies on the right ever hearing what really happened . Do they ever get that information . I feel like Kamala Harris surrogates need to show up in places where maybe theyre not so welcome, but they need to have their voices heard. Yeah, this is an interesting dilemma for the Harris Campaign. How do you penetrate that rightwing ecosystem . Exactly. How do you penetrate that bubble . As weve been detailing all morning how do you penetrate the lies . Lets say it, how do you penetrate the lies when you actually have Donald Trump now lying about his lies. Saying, i didnt tell them not to support the bill. Of course, he was there all along. You were reporting on it. We were talking about it in real time. We were. Donald trump was killing the toughest Border Security bill ever. Yeah. He bragged about it. He posted on beyond the clips we played earlier, he posted on truth social repeatedly, urging republicans to oppose the bill. He knew itd wound him come november. Yes, trump is lie after lie after lie. Weve cataloged them and how dangerous so many of them were this weekend. Were also hitting another point about the harriswalz campaign. Our Friend Mark Leibovich wrote about it in the atlantic. There is a growing anxiety among democrats, Harris And Walz arent there enough, arent doing enough. Trump is lying. Also, he took the summer off from campaigning, mind now, but now he is everywhere, reverend Al Sharpton. Look, hes not taking tough questions. Hes sitting for friendly interview, is lying, is spreading dangerous falsehoods, but he is omnipresent, as he has been in the past. Walz has been off the grid because he is preparing for tomorrow nights debate. Thats understandable. But as leibovich noted, there is growing anxiety among democrats that the Harris Campaign is treating them with kid gloves. Theyre not doing enough in terms of interviews and events. They need to be everywhere right now. They have five minutes. What are you hearing . What advice would you give . Im hearing that they are strategically laying out these last 4 1 2, 5 weeks, and their surrogates to really spread this out. I hope that is true. Because you must not get down, if its a boxing match, to the last few rounds, and then slow up because thats where you can be in danger of getting knocked out or counted out in terms of the scorecard. Donald trump is going to try, out of desperation, because he is looking at these poll numbers, he is looking at the fact that hes not filling up these rallies like he used to, he is going to be all over the place because he is desperate. But desperation could lead to defeat if there is a relaxation on the side of the democrats. And heres a softball for them. This is a blatant lie that he is telling about what he did or did not do in terms of the Senate Bill that could have dealt with the border. But a lie doesnt matter if everyone doesnt know he lied and understand the severity of that lie. Charlie, weve had a weekend of kind of lots of polls. When you look at them and when you look at where we are in the race at the moment, it seems to be tied. One area of vulnerability for the Vice President is immigration, as we have been talking about. It is also men, generally, men without college degrees, hispanic men, black men, potentially, as well. What do you think the Vice President needs to do at this stage of the campaign . Is it getting out more is it doing a podcast about sports, targeted specifically at men . What would your strategic advice be to her at the moment . Im not sure she needs my strategic advice. I would urge the democrats just to keep pointing at what Donald Trump is doing, what he is saying. You know, Donald Trump is everywhere. Thats absolutely true. But what is he saying . What are the american people seeing if theyre paying attention to Donald Trump . This was an incredibly dark weekend. You had, Donald Trump and Jonathan Lemire highlighted this. Over the weekend, the incredible language he is using at the day of violence. His increasing attacks on migrants. Were past a dog whistle. There is a theory, that the more the race is focused on Donald Trump and his unhinged extremism, the better off it is for Kamala Harris and the democrats. Donald trump has made a calculation. That his base likes the dark fear. They like carnage. He is calculating that he can make americans afraid of migrants. Thats what he thinks about the american people. You know, well find out, relatively shortly, whether he is right about this. Right now, Donald Trump, i think, is melting down in front of our eyes. And the kind of rhetoric he is using does not strike me as aimed at swing voters, if there are swing voters. It does not strike me as reaching out to moderate republicans who might have doubts about him. He has done into a very, very dark place, and hes probably going to spend that, you know, for the next five weeks. I want to remind people, in 2016, he moderated in the final weeks of the campaign his message. He actually was not the focus of attention. When the focus of attention is on Donald Trump, this kind of Donald Trump, he doesnt tend to do very well. Of course, the final week to ten days, he moderated because he wanted to keep the attention on the James Comey letter, which swung the election for him. So he just sat back and moderated. In this case, mika, youll remember, about a month ago, we said, his numbers are staying the same. He has a very hard ceiling, and we said and other people had said, that Donald Trump could not win this election. He needed to make, and it was his goal to make Kamala Harris lose the election. He was going to have to destroy her, and this is what he thinks destroying her looks like. But calling somebody stupid that destroyed you in a debate, its probably not the way to do it. Especially when you Cant Answer the most basic questions about policy. He cant. Heres a case in point. During a Q A Session in michigan on friday, Donald Trump was asked by a voter about outsourcing and the future of the american auto industry. Here now is the expresident s answer about a totally different thing. Nuclear weapons again . With many jobs being outsourced as we speak, what action will you take to ensure that our jobs stay in america so we can continue to build the best cars in the world here in michigan . Pretty much as weve been saying, and what i want to do is i want to be able to look, your business years ago, this area, i was honored as the man of the year, maybe 20 years ago. Oh, and the fake news heard about it and said, it never happened. It never happened. I didnt know who it was. It was a group that honored me as man of the year. See the fake news back there . But they said [ Crowd Booing ] they said, oh, and looked and, you know, said it never happened. I said, i swear to you, it happened. I was man of the year. I came and made a speech. They said, why to you allow them to take your Car Business away . Why do you allow it to happen . Theyre taking your business away. I didnt know too much about it. All i know is they were taking your Car Industry away from you. They said it never happened. Lo and behold, somebody said, i remember the event. Then we found out and we had everything. We got the awards. We had everything. It did happen. Oh, my god. That was a question about outsourcing. A question about outsourcing, charlie sykes. Then he says, yeah, pretty much as ive been saying. Then im trying to take notes. Man of the year. Fake news. Oh, it never happened. I made a speech. It never happened. It didnt happen. I didnt hear anything about outsourcing in there, did you . No. Mika, remember, when he was talking about he was asked about Child Tax credits. He had nothing to say. Talked about tariffs. He was asked about the economy last week, charlie. This is even more. He talked about nuclear weapons. He Cant Answer any questionings on policy, and that is the madness of columnists. We talked about it last week. Wringing their hands going, kamala needs to go deeper on quantitative easing. The double standards are blatant here. Ask him about the Health Care. Hes working on a concept of a plan. This is gibbering nonsense. To step back a bit, im old enough to remember when Joe Bidens fitness for office, being too old, his cognitive decline was a major issue. What are we seeing from Donald Trump on a daily basis . If that was a major issue in 2024, when did it stop being a major issue when Donald Trump continues to do this . Also, youre right about his complete lack of Specificity Or Knowledge or interest in policy. Its on display all the time. Yet, we do have the media trying to figure out, how do we cover this race . Part of the problem is, this is not a normal race. This is not a normal race that pits a normal democrat against a normal republican, and theyre going to debate. Liberal versus conservative policies. We are dealing with Donald Trump, and there is nothing i can tell you about Donald Trump that we have not said A Hundred times. But trying to pretend that this is a normal candidate who is, you know, talking about immigration, or that he is talking about Health Care, hes talking about outsourcing, he has no interest in those things. We know what he is doing. You mentioned before that Donald Trump lies, then he lies about his lies. I think the Big Question is whether or not his supporters have gotten to the point where they just dont care anymore. Im not sure thats the case with the majority of americans, but he not only lies, but i think that you have and this is a dangerous moment. What happens when the american people understand that theyre being lied to, and they dont care theyre being lied to . Donald trump is making the calculation that he doesnt have to talk about policy. He doesnt have to be coherent. That he doesnt have to be decent. All he has to do is throw out his various versions of reality, and, somehow, thats going to be enough. Again, this election is going to tell us a lot more about the american people than it is about Donald Trump. All right. Charlie sykes, thank you very much for coming on this morning. What have i ever done to deserve even one of the pleasures ive known tell me, lord what did i ever do legendary actor, Singer SongwriterKris Kristofferson, performing his Hit SongWhy Me in 2016 at an allstar concert event, celebrating the life and career. Kris kristofferson passed away peacefully at his home in maui. Countless artists, including the grateful dead, michael buble, and gladys knight, Al Green have recorded his songs. Starred in big movies. A star is born alongside Barbra Streisand. Kris kristofferson was 88 years old. Lets bring in sirius xm. Why me lord, help me make it through the night, all those. I love how he started. He was an army. He was a hilo pilot. He was sweeping floors at Columbia Studios because he wanted to get his Big Break. But his Big Break came when he landed his helicopter on Johnny Cashs lawn. Finally, Johnny Cash starts paying attention to him, and he records Sunday Morning coming down, and thats the Big Break. Wow. Launches this american icon, right . That Helicopter Story is among his most famous, classic. In fact, Johnny Cash was known for kind of upping it a bit. He landed on my Front Lawn with a beer in his hand, and he came jumping out. Kris said, i dont think he was really home when i landed on his lawn. It really did happen, though. Wow. Incredible. This happens a lot. Theres also a Toby Keith Story backstage, he confronted toby keith. Were not sure whether that happened or not, but Kris Kristofferson, just bigger than life. Those sort of stories seem to follow him around. But talk about his gift as a songwriter. The guy was a rhodes scholar. He added a level of lyricism to Country Music that was just beginning. He represented you have the greats in Country Music, but he also respected bob dylan. Johnny cash, also hugely influenced by dylan. It was that sentiment that he brought to Country Music, writing deeper stories about Love And Loss and pain. The guy was simple in his lyricism and eloquent. Really something. Talk about his Acting Career again. He didnt have actual formal training, but he became a massive star. He did. His Movie Career is interesting because, i mean, he certainly made a big hit with Barbra Streisand in a star was born. She was developing this script, and she thought he was the perfect one. But, i mean, he was also in the most legendary flop in hollywood history. With that in mind, that gave a big dent to his career. He got a serious dent from my heavens gate, this was a huge loss. Though for years, he defended that after. Now, people look and give that a little grace. Billy and kid, also a perfect role for him. But the Movie Kind of tanked. I mean, lets be honest. But he was he made an impression. He was this rough heman with a heart. Talk about, if you could, on the passing of Kris Kristofferson at the age of 88, what is his legacy, do you think, mark . You know, if you look at what he did with the highway men, you look at what he did with his wife, rita coolidge, and other hits mainly for other people. Me and bobby mcgee, so many people covered that. Numbers of people covered all of his songs. What he brought to Country Music continues today. You know, the people we are seeing today, jason isabel, zach bryan, they dont happen without this goodman, thank you so much for coming on the show to help remember Kris Kristofferson. Thank you. Thank you. Take care. Coming up, our next guest is examining the culture of Human Thinking and its impact on politics. I read where she was not black, that she put out. Ill say that. Then i read that she was black. Thats okay. Either one was okay with me. Thats up to her. Thats up to her. Vice president harris, your thought on this . I think its i mean, honestly, its a tragedy that we have someone who wants to be president , who has consistently, over the course of his career, attempted to use race to divide the american people. You know, i do believe that the vast majority of us know that we have so much more in common than what separates us. We dont want this kind of approach that is just constantly trying to divide us. That was Donald Trump and Kamala Harris at the president ial debate earlier this month. That exchange highlights one of the biggest differences in the two candidates campaigns. One candidate trying to divide voters, while the other making an effort to unite. Americas political divisions is a topic discussed in tribal, how the cultural instincts that divide us with help bring us together. The books author, michael morris, joins us now. Hes a professor of Leadership And Psychology at columbia university. Great to have you on the show. This book and this concept is fascinating because we have seen some real negative impact of tribalism in the past few years in this country. Talk about why it can be bad, but, also, you argue, it can be good. What does it tap into . Tribalism is the only human nature that we have, so it has some unfortunate consequences at times. But its the best thing that we can harness in order to motivate people in order to mobilize people. I think we have seen a lot of divisive tribalism in the way of a populous politics in this country and other countries around the world. But we need inclusive populism. Populism didnt always mean reactionary politics. Some of our greatest president s have been populists. Theres a dark tone nowadays, saying that we have never been more divided. Perhaps we can never get back to the way the country used to be. But in 1860, when Abraham Lincoln was elected, he had less than 40 of the vote. Seven states immediately seceded before the revolution. Then four more. Thats a rift. Thats a really vision in the country. In his inaugural, he said, you know, the mystic chords of memory shall yet swell, the who chorus of the union. He had faith that somehow, memory, our collective history was going to be the key to bringing the country back together again. Michael, lets talk about this a little further. Now, in the present day, because as your book lies out, and congrats on it, some good things about tribalism. Right now, it does seem as though we played that clip there from Donald Trump, it is being used as a political divider. Why do we think the trends have gone that way . What role do things like Social Media play, perhaps, where it is easy to to be with your tribe, red and blue, opposed to someone who disagrees with you . Its a Powder Keg for tribalism. It lowers the price of virtue signaling, of moral outrage, and increases the payoff of the consequences. You dont have to go to a rally, get in somebodys face, and risk getting shoved. You have to make a snarky remark in your bedroom, and itll be seen by way more people than ever before. It really has made a difference. Michael, is it not true that you can use, and im looking at your book, its very fascinating to me, because you can use tribalism really when you can have tribes identify with Each Other with common interests. In the civil rights movement, blacks and jews. When you see lgbtq movements and movements around womens rights. When people identify, well, my tribe was mistreated, your tribe was mistreated, it could be a unifying factor, couldnt it . Definitely. You know, we think about our greatest leaders in the civil rights movement. Reverend martin luther king. His famous i have a Dream Speech was more than trying to convince people through logical arguments. What he did was hit people with cultural symbols that matter to them. You know, he talked about all men are created equal in the declaration of independence. He talked about sweet land of liberty. He talked about the american dream. So he was reaching into the average americans heart, reaching into the ideals they already held dear, and trying to use that to leverage their activism, rather than trying to lecture them or change their mind about something. It was not education but evocation. Tribal, how the instincts can draw us together. Professor michael morris, thank you so much for being on the show this morning. Honor to be here. We appreciate it. Take care. Thank you. Coming up, Donald Trump recently said if he is reelected, women voters wont be thinking about abortion because they will be protected. With abortion, Health CareFront And Center in this years election, a new book is focusing on the struggle for abortion rights that communities of color have historically faced. Liberating abortion, claiming our history, sharing our stories, and building the reproductive future we deserve, chronicles what the authors call the long, racist History And Battle for reproductive rights. The book also shines a light on the present Day Struggle women are now facing to access abortion Health Care following the supreme court overturning roe v. Wade. Joining us now, the coauthor of the book, renee bracey sherman. She is a Reproduction Justice Activist and Founder And Executive director of we testify, an organization dedicated to the representation of people who have had abortions and help share their stories. Thank you for coming on the show. I know for this book you interviewed over 50 people of color who have had abortions including activists, actresses, television writers, politicians and two black members of jane, which we will get to in a moment. What did you set out to accomplish and what did you discover . Well, one of the things that i found when i had my abortion is that i looked at the conversation that was happening on television, in the news, in politics, and it didnt include people who looked like me despite the fact that the majority of people who have abortions are people of color. So we wanted to be able to write ourselves back into history. We wanted to be able to say, wait a second, abortion has been around since the beginning of the time, right . It has been in egyptian papyruses, in ancient chinese textbooks, but where are our stories, where are we in these conversations . All of us deserve to see ourselves in history and also be able to see where are we going with what is next to liberate abortion. And in these stories, real truelife stories of the confrontation with the need for this medical procedure, can you talk about making the case in this book for abortion being an essential part of Health Care . Well, we know that abortion is extremely stigmatized, right . Right. Despite the fact that every single one of your audience members listening today, theyve all they love someone who has had an abortion and yet we still treat people who have abortions as if were somehow separate from needing Health Care or separate from our communities. So we felt like if we have a deep conversation about where that stigma comes from, this fear of Sex And Pregnancy and misinformation, all of those things, we could not only liberate abortion and make sure that people who have abortions and need abortions are treated with respect, but also that we could show up better with Love And Support for everyone who is pregnant and trying to build a family, that they get the care that they need and that they get to have all the resources and the rights to make whatever decision is best for them. Thats through a framework called reproductive justice that was coined by black women 30 years ago, and it is the ability to decide if, when and how to grow our families and to make sure that we are able to raise our families free from statesanctioned violence and coercion. We want to be able to build communities that respect all of us and all of our families. Renee, given that stigma and the fact that one in four yet one in four american women have had an abortion, you talk about your own personal story in the book, which is a brave thing to do. What made you decide to do that . Well, when i had my abortion, i knew that a cousin my Cousin Norah had had an abortion but i didnt really know anyone else in my family who had an abortion. I felt like with that statistic there has to be more of us, and i started talking about it with other people who told me they had had abortions. It was such a huge weight that was lifted off of my shoulders. My coauthor, regina mahone, and i started sharing our stories together. We thought what would it look like if we had a conversation, an honest conversation about abortion where we could talk about our stories, talk about what it was like and build a community. Thats what we do at my organization, we testify. We work with people, particularly folks of color, who have had abortions to get rid of the stigma and be able to say, it is okay, youre not alone, and lets talk about how we make Abortion Access better for all of us in this country. Renee, one of the things that comes to mind to me in seeing and reading your book is that many people in the black community and communities of color, women, see it also as a civil Rights Issue and have challenged the civil rights activists like myself, that even if you disagree personally how do you impede upon my right to make my choice . Even black churches and others have been challenged with that, that you can make your choice but you cant infringe on my choice without infringing on my civil rights. Talk about that. I mean it is absolutely a civil Rights Issue. One of the things that i found when we were doing this research that was so beautiful is the way that the history of Abortion Access, particularly during the time that it was criminalized, was entwined with the civil rights movement. A doctor who is famously known as bringing the emmett till case and his murder to the larger conversation, he was a civil rights activist, but what a lot of people dont know is that he was an Abortion Provider his entire life. He was openly an Abortion Provider, particularly after roe legalized abortion because he knew that it was critical to black Peoples Ability to create their own families and own their own bodies and our own liberation. The new book is entitled liberating abortion claiming our history, sharing our stories and building the reproductive future we deserve. It Goes On Sale tomorrow. Renee bracey sherman, thank you for everything you do and congratulations on the book. Thank you so much. Take care. All right. Still ahead, the latest developments out of The Middle East as israel continues to target hezbollah in lebanon and braces for potential retaliation following the death of the terrorist groups leader. Plus, Donald Trump using even more dark and extreme rhetoric to describe Vice PresidentKamala Harris. Well play more of his remarks and what top republicans are now saying. Morning joe will be right back. Lets say youre deep in a show or a game or the game. On a train, at home, at work. Okay, maybe not at work. Point is at xfinity. Were constantly engineering new ways to get the entertainment you love to you faster and easier than ever. Thats what i do. Is that Love Island . I am so happy to be campaigning in whatever Swing State im in, which i will just refer to as Wisconsinpennsylvaniava Georgia because im going to protect your vageorgia. This election is about moving forward. You see, Donald Trump is stuck in the past. It is like i say to my husband doug when he leaves his phone at the chilis, we are not going back you know, Trump And Vance are weird, all right. They want the government to control what you do in your bedroom and what books you read. You know, in minnesota we have a saying, mind your business. We also have another saying in minnesota, my froze to the park bench. They say that me blaming the democrats for inciting violence is the pot calling the kettle black, but frankly i didnt know the kettle was black until very recently. I thought the kettle was indian, and then it decided to turn black. I miss Joe Biden. Oh, joe. We miss Joe Biden, folks. What we wouldnt give to have him stand next to me and be old. We had this in the bag but then they did a switcheroo and then they swapped Out Biden with kamala. Hello, hello. It is i, j. D. Vance. Just this after noon Donald Trump told me, j. D. , youre like a son to me because i dont like you and im stuck with you. Im sure you have all heard what the liberal media have been saying about me, im a creep, im a weirdo, what am i doing here . I will tell you what im doing here, getting this crowd hot. Whewhoo. A lot of people forget im president , including me. Folks, we still got work to do, no joke. Serious, come on. Guess what and by the way, the fact of the matter is the rich dont pay their fair share. They got to pay their fair share. We got to build back better. The build back better, the better e the better, cant believe its not thank you so much. I just want to say thank you Joe Biden. Thank you for putting country first and handing over the reins. I didnt want to. Saturday night live with an extended cold open to kick off its 50th season. Mya rudolph so good. Revising her portrayal of Kamala Harris. Jim gaffigan, so good. And a cameo by Dana Carvey as president Joe Biden. How good. It was fun. The whole thing was fun. We have a lot to get to. Good Morning And Welcome to Morning Joe. It is monday, september 30th. With us we have the host of Way Too Early white House Bureau Chief at politico Jonathan Lemire. U. S. Special correspondent for Bbc NewsKatty Kay is with us. Nbc news national Affairs Analyst and partner at puck, John Heilemann. We will get to major developments out of The Middle East following israels killing of the leader of hbs. First, with just about five weeks to go until the November Election five weeks formerpresident Donald Trump spent the Weekend Campaigning in several key Battleground States and used extreme and dark rhetoric to attack his opponent, Vice PresidentKamala Harris. Okay. He really is doubled down, impossible. I think it is a meltdown. I dont even think you call it double down. I mean when you well, i will let you play yeah. We can play the clips but, again, even republicans are attacking him and, as Jonathan Lemire said, quietly theyre getting really worried right now. He reiterated his pledge to go after people who cheat in the election. He said one violent day of policing will end crime in america and continued to push misinformation about haitian immigrants in springfield, ohio, in addition to some very odd i guess more of the weave. Take a look. Kamala is mentally impaired. If a republican did what she did if a republican did what she did, that republican would be impeached and removed from office, and rightfully so, for high crimes and misdemeanors. Joe biden became impaired. Kamala was born that way. She was born that way. And if you think about it, only a Mentally Disabled person could have allowed this to happen to our country. Anybody would know this. Theres something wrong with kamala and i just dont know what it is, but there is definitely missing. You know what . Everybody knows it. She is a stupid person, stupid person. I dont care. I dont care. If they didnt cheat i wouldnt even be here today. You know why . I wouldnt have to campaign. Im here only because they cheat and they cheat in this state, especially in philadelphia, and i mentioned a couple of other areas. But for the most part, but philadelphia is out of control, detroit is out of control, atlanta is out of control. Places are out of control, out of control. Because if there was no cheating, if god came down from on high and said, i am going to be your Vote Tabulator for this election, i would leave this podium right now because i wouldnt have to speak. We wouldnt have any problems. We have to have a landslide because they cheat so much. If we win and when we win, were going to prosecute people that cheat on this election. And if we can, we will go back to the last one, too, if were allowed. But were going to prosecute people, so at least they know thats going to happen. You know, these are smart, smart people. Theyre not so stupid, but they have to be taught. Now, if you had one really violent day, like a guy like mike kelly, put him in charge, congressman kelly, put him in charge for one day. Mike, would you say youre right here. Hes a great congressman. Would you say, mike, that if you were in charge you would say, oh, please, dont touch them, dont touch them, let them rob your store. All of these stores go out of business, right . They dont pay rent. It is a chain of events. It is so bad. One rough hour, and i mean real rough, the word will get out and it will end immediately, end immediately. You know, it will end immediately. The majority of the school cannot speak english. In ohio, springfield, they cant speak english. Theyre taking over the schools. Theres nobody that can speak english and the mayor is looking for interpreters. Isnt that wonderful . How can this happen . Remember, theres a hat thats made that sells like crazy oh, theres a fly. Oh, i wonder where the fly came from. Two years ago i wouldnt have had a fly up here. Youre changing rapidly, but we cant take it any longer. Two years ago i would not have had a fly up here, but things are changing rapidly. I mean this is republicans obviously are concerned about this, for good reason. Theyre talking about how hes doubling down and, of course, they usually whisper. They usually whisper these things. I wrote some of these notes down. She is mentally impaired, he says to the crowds applause. Nice crowd. She is Mentally Disabled, he says, to the crowds applause. Nice crowd. She is a, quote, stupid person, and this actually John Heilemann, this has actually got republicans doing something republicans never do. The New York times shows republicans are actually being critical of Donald Trump. Yeah. And Republicans Fault Trump over insults to his rival, from the national section of the New York times. This is Larry Hogan who is Running for senate. I think thats insulting not only to the Vice President but to people that actually do have mental disabilities. Ive said for years that trumps divisive rhetoric is something that we can do without. Lindsey graham also critical of Donald Trumps statements this weekend. Representative tom emmer, Minnesota Republican who is helping j. D. Vance for the upcoming debate, tried to distance himself. He said, i think we should stick to the issues, and yet here he goes and, john, the question answers itself i guess. If she were so, quote, stupid, if she were so, quote, mentally impaired, if she were, quote, Mentally Disabled why did she destroy him in a debate for 90 minutes, humiliate him so badly he refuses to debate her on Fox News . Thats question number one. And if she has had this mental condition from birth, then why did he give her thousands of dollars in 2014 for her political campaign when she was Running for the united States Senate . Joe, i appreciate that you that you are interrogating in this rational way, which is interrogating in this rational way on some level, because, of course, we should hold him to account. Right. But there is, i think, part of the dark he announced these speeches are going to be dark. He literally started a couple of them this weekend, i think, lemere, where he said, this is going to be a dark speech and then he proceeds to uncork the series of these speeches. You put them all together, and it requires no particularly sophisticated or subtle de coding to see what the common through line of all of the speeches is, which is theyre extraordinarily racist and racist top to bottom. You just picked out a thing, joe, i think fits into the rubric. He says, you know, Joe Biden turned mentally impaired, but Kamala Harris was mentally impaired from birth. Well, you know, she also was, you know, she had the racial makeup that she had since birth. And if you go through you know, Thats Kind of the difference between Joe Biden and Kamala Harris. One of them happens to be white and one happens to be black. And if you go through his comments about where the corruption is, every single place he nays where terrible things are happening, where things are being stolen, where is the crime the worst, where is the election being stolen, where are terrible things happening, just by happenstance they has been to be places like philadelphia, milwaukee and cleveland, every one of them a major urban center of america marked, especially in his racist mind, as overRun by people of color. Of course, the haitian thing has always been racist, but lately blatantly racist and he continues to hold on to it despite the De Bunking and all of it. I raise this just to say some of us on this show, you, others, mika, people at this table worried or foresaw that when Kamala Harris became the nominee that we were going to have we were likely to have, given Donald Trumps predilections, we were likely to have one of the most outrageously naked racist campaigns in the country. We have seen some of it so far, but i feel heading into the next five weeks the darkness that Donald Trump talks about in these speeches is a way of talking about what is about to happen, which is about to be a brutal racebased assault on her, her supporters, that part of the democratic party, the important coalition of the democratic party. It has been building over the last few weeks as he has floundered and his basest, most grotesque impulses are coming to the fore as he sees the race slipping away. It will be a part of his campaign. Lets go through more of this. He suggested some of the migrants would break into your house and, quote, slit your throats, suggesting without evidence that migrant are responsible for more crime. He has suggested the 13,000 migrants that came in accused of crime are blamed on the biden administration when stats show many came in when he was president and many are in prison. He did suggest there should be an hour of violence, which sound like the plot of the movie the purge which is deeply dangerous. Again, we know how his words have inspired violence before including but not limited to January 6th. Certainly his followers are hearing what he is saying. You see it on the screen here. Monsters, vile animals, saying migrants want to rape, pillage and kill. Deeply offensive and dangerous rhetoric there. Of course, as john and joe just mentioned, singling out Minority Majority cities and suggesting his opponent was mentally impaired. Also, lets not lose sight of this, once again calling for his political opponents to be jailed, suggesting anyone who opposed him in 2016, 2020, 2024, who might be trying to, quote, rig the election should be prosecuted. This is an extraordinary dangerous Closing Argument and vision for america. Yeah. So the interesting thing i guess guest all of this is that the polls are as tight as they are. Gene robinson in his column this morning is ask that question, why is it so tight. I think whilest Kamala Harris has the momentum and she is a little bit ahead in most of the polls if you took an aggregate of them, it is a Neckinneck Race if you believe the polling and we dont know if the polling is reflective of all of those people that might end up voting for trump as they did in 2016 but arent telling pollsters that. The one area that Kamala Harris seems to have caught up with Donald Trump is on the economy. Trumps advisers wanted him to focus on the economy, just talk about the economy, just talk about the economy, just talk about the economy and they saw that as a way to get ahead and he hasnt done that. The area he is comfortable talking about is immigration, race and migrants. Actually, if you look at some of the polling that is still where he holds the strongest lead. His Lead Hasnt eroded on the border and on immigration at all. If you look at particularly polling around hispanic voters and latino voters they seem to have flipped on the issue of immigration, and you wonder whether Donald Trump actually is driving that polling that shows he is still strong on immigration by keeping talking about this, whether he is tapping into something that is new in the electorate where clearly theres a more conservative approach in the electorate towards immigration and he is tapping into it. I dont know if it is even that calculated. It is his Comfort Zone and thats what he is talking about. Kind of you look across the polling, that is still where he has his strongest hand. Com if kamala is reelected your town and every town just like it all across wisconsin and all across your country, the heartland, the coast, it doesnt matter, will be transformed into a third world hell hole. You know, John Heilemann, a couple of things. First of all, immigration has been an issue since 2016 and it has just time and time again it has been the dog that hasnt barked. Maybe in specific house races, but nationally it just hasnt. If you look at polling and if you have looked at polling, at his specific positions on immigration theyre far more extreme than most americans. So this is a lot of noise. It is a lot of racism. It is a lot of hatred. Im not so sure it is going to translate into a victory, but, as you know, if you ask the biden the Harris Campaign, if you ask the Harris Campaign how theyre feeling about the election right now, they go, you know, theres sort of a quiet confidence but theyre like, you know, were tied. We are going to have to work hard if we want to win. If you talk to the trump campaign, theres this theres this like arrogance where theyll tell you, well, we got it. We got so many different pathways to 270, were fine. The fact is they might want to get that message to their boss because we all know Donald Trump. Donald trump doesnt talk that way when he thinks he is ahead. Donald trump, the more he sees harris catching up in the polls, going ahead in the polls, again, the more he sees data that shows all of the Trend Lines are breaking in his direction, the more hostile he gets, the more racist he gets, the more xenophobic he gets. It is there. That is his tell. Yes, it is. I mean entirely his tell, and i would add i mean i dont think Donald Trump has any deep sense of what some of the more interesting underlying demographic shifts going on in the polling are. But it is the indicates that what we are seeing right now, if you look at all of the polling, and theres just a ton of it out there now. But underneath the surface level consensus, which is that the race is incredibly close and we could be headed for maybe one of the tightest elections in the modern or any American History at the electoral College Level at least, is this really interesting trend towards racial depolarization in terms of what were seeing in support of the two candidates, which is to say that Kamala Harris is performing better right now with white voters than Joe Bidens the final results of Joe Bidens election of 2020, than Joe Biden did with white voters and she is doing a little bit worse than Joe Biden did with nonwhite voters, with american voters and latino voters, which is sort of an unexpected turn of events. Part of that has to do with the Fact Trump is performing better with latino voters and in particular young African American men. One of your comments about the quiet confidence of people in the Harris Campaign is because she is overperforming relative to biden with white voters, thats the reason why she has been steadily cementing the small, persistent but small lead in states that up until a month ago people thought she might be weaker in, which is to say the blue states where in pennsylvania her polling has solidified. Her polling in michigan and wisconsin, again, small but persistent leads in those blue states. You win those plus nebraska and you are done. 270 is a narrow victory, and it was always Joe Bidens easiest path and now looks like the solidest path for her. It goes to the pattern of polarization. I dont think trump understands any of the things i just said, but i think he is worried about the fact, he knows the headline of that which is that the Blue Wall is solidifying for her. Thats how he won in 2016 and it was because of white voters. I think part of this racebased Fear Rhetoric is that on some instinctive level informed by the top lines of polling is he think that white people arent scared enough in these places in the upper midwest. So you talk about haitians taking over springfield, and in a lot of the speeches he gave over the weekend they were in the states where he is trying to scare the crap out of white voters to try to get them back because he cant believe Kamala Harris is doing as well with them as she is coming up, how the leader of hezbollah chose his own fate. Israeli officials announced hassan nasrallah early saturday morning, in the middle of the night the idf flattened three Apartment Buildings in southern beirut. Officials claim the central headquarters of the militant group was underground. The idf says several other senior hezbollah commanders were also killed in the massive attack. Hezbollah later confirmed Nasrallahs Death and iran vowed revenge, putting israel on high alert for any possible retaliation. Current and former u. S. Officials tell Nbc News the biden administration was blind sided by the israeli attack, saying the president was infuriated with the timing of it all. Still, the president called the strike a measure of justice, saying that under Nasrallahs Leadership hezbollah was responsible for killing hundreds of americans. Richard haass, author of the weekly Newsletter Home and away, available on sub stack. And former Supreme Allied Commander, retired naval admiral James Stavridis, analyst for msNbc News. Lets talk about the logistics first of all. You look it a everything that has happened to hezbollah over the past several weeks, it is very obvious that they did not have the loyalty of the lebanon people. I mean the sources that had to give all of these hezbollah leaders up is that is remarkable in and of itself. But, secondly, you look at the situation and it looks in the short term like a massive overwhelming israeli victory in the battle, but lets talk about the broader war. Is this going to devolve into what we saw in lebanon in the 1980s . Lets start where you did, which is what does this moment mean to an organization like hezbollah. I watched the speech last night of the Acting Leader of hezbollah, and he was effectively the Vice President. So picture an evening where Vice PresidentKamala Harris is broadcasting from an undisclosed location, mourning the death of president Joe Biden, secretary of defense, head of the cia, the head of the state department. It is a shocking moment for hezbollah. And, by the way, when President Biden says blood on his hands, that barely gets at what nasrallah did to America Decade after decade including, if i may mention, my first classmate from annapolis was a Marine Captain who died in the beirut barracks bombing. So this is a good note that nasrallah has been taken off the chess board. Joe, to the broader question here, i think the israelis and i would caution them need to be careful of a bit of confidence here. Hezbollah may feel to them like a paper tiger. You know, theyve been dug into lebanon, to your point, for decades. Theyve held that country like a hostage. The israelis need to be careful that they dont overreach here, but it has been an incredibly successful couple of weeks. Final thought here, your question is the right one, will this Go Wider. Hey, i define wider as iran gets into the fight in a big way. Certainly theres going to be more combat up to and probably close to the river which is 18 miles north of the southern border, but a wider regional war is iran getting involved. I think the mood in iran, hey, they will fight until the last lebanese, they will fight until the last hamas, they will foot until the last houthi. I think we wont see a wider war but look for the israelis to grind it out, probably move more on the ground. Lets hope they dont push towards more than that. We will take a quick pause in this conversation. When we come back, Richard Haass ways in on over what has happened in the last few days in The Middle East. And apple joins us with a Brandnew Installment of our broadcast when Morning Joe comes right back. man these men of means with their silver spoons. What will become of them when they discover robinhood gold allows others to earn their very liberal rates on idle cash. They would descend into chaos. Dont wait call now, and talk to a real person. You know, richard, in Social Media theres a Running-gag'>Running Gag about im old enough to remember, and then somebody will bring up something that happened like four weeks ago. In this case im old enough to remember something that happened over 40 years ago, and that is after a very strong, a very powerful idf went into lebanon with overwhelming force. They achieved what they wanted to achieve quickly. They got to the suburbs of beirut, and then all Hell Broke Loose and they were stuck in the quagmire to end all quagmires. Im curious to the Admirals Point about israelis needing to be cautious as they move forward. Let me just ask you. What evidence do you have that this Wont End up looking like the early 1980s if israel moves in with a Ground War into lebanon . Well, joe, i think theres a chance the israelis will add a dimension of Ground Forces to what theyre doing in lebanon, but i do not think you are going to see anything like an occupation. I think i could see Ground Forces going in, but also coming out. What theyre doing here, it is quite interesting, joe. What i think we are seeing is the systematic targeting by israel of iranian instruments of power. You know, after things wound down to some extent In Gaza it has freed the israelis up to go after hezbollah in the north and were always seeing them going after the houthis in yemen. I think the israelis have decided they can somewhat safely do that because, as the admiral said, iran is not particularly anxious to have a direct war with israel but it does give iran a real dilemma. They either have to go in and help their proxies or theyre exposed and they dont. I dont think they will in a big way, because actually theres a lot of voices in israel that are itching to go after iran. Theres a little bit if you remember Al Hague when he was Secretary Of State wanted at times to go after cuba, to go to the source. Theres a whole school of thought in israel, enough of fighting the proxies, lets go after iran. Im not sure iran is going to give them the chance, so i would guess for the foreseeable future you are going to see israel going into lebanon, but not an occupation, not repeat the mistakes of 40 years ago, and try to weaken these instruments of iranian power. That will, again, make iran a little bit more careful, the israeli thinking goes, because it has been hezbollah more than Anything Else that has held Israel At Bay because so much of israel is vulnerable to the rockets of hezbollah. You know, katty, i cannot help but look at just how passive iran has been over the past year or so and, you know, not stop and wonder if theyre being passive in the face of one attack after another against their interests. If theyre not being passive because theyre afraid of a fullblown war that will allow israel to go in and destroy their nuclear program, whether theyre deciding they will sacrifice hamas, they will sacrifice hezbollah, they will sacrifice these terrorist groups they funded for decades because they dont want to rock the boat, they dont want to take their eye off the ball which right now is all about building their nuclear program and going nuclear before israel or the united states comes in and destroys their program. Yeah. One of the things that the iranian leadership feels has kept them safe from being attacked by israel is the fact they have this nuclear program, but as richard just said there are people within israel who are itching to take on iran, would like to do so, and they have to balance those two factors at the moment. So thats why theyre playing it cautiously. Thats why, as you say, theyve been passive, surprisingly passive perhaps, you know, signaling is kinds of missile attacks they were launching, telling the israelis what was coming in a way we might not perhaps have anticipated. Admiral, where do you think this all of this happened, the extraordinary events of the last week, where does that leave gaza . Does that now does netanyahu, having done what he has done in lebanon against hezbollah, now have a certain amount of Wiggle Room with some of the right on his coalition to perhaps and this is the optimistic scenario, to perhaps focus on some kind of Ceasefire DealIn Gaza or is that being too polly annish about the situation . I call it being cautiously optimistic and i agree. I think at some point, to Richard Haasss point, israelis dont want to occupy gaza. Up north they dont want to occupy gaza and probably dont want to incur the Reconstruction Cost which will be quite expensive. As the knesset comes into session in the next two weeks, there might be some room to talk about kind of an arab peace keeping force. We are still a ways away from that, katty, but i think it is the right space to watch over the next few weeks. Coming up, one of our next guests is an Oscar Nominee who has a new Project Streaming on peacock. Don cheadle is teaming up with samuel l. I carried my weapon on to federal grounds that we own, american citizens own. Paying taxes gives you know right. I have every constitutional right to carry a weapon and to take over congress. Just because the law as written does not mean it is the right law. We went in there, they scurried away like rats and hid. Thats how you do it that was a scene from the new Offbroadway Play Fatherland which opened last week. It is based on the trial of guy wesley reffik, the first american convicted for the attacks on January 6th. Prosecutors say refik looked the match for the mob at the capitol. The play is from Case Management and it focuses on the defendant and his son who reported him to the fbi and later testified against him in court. Joining us now is guy refiks son, jackson refik, us now is j well as the director of fatherland. Jackson, we will start with you. Lets talk a little bit, if you dont mind, about the real Life Incident here, after January 6th, what compelled you to turn in your father . Well, the tip actually came in from before January 6th, my dad was way more radicalized as time went on following trump and isolating himself more and more and it was terrifying. What were some signs you saw . He was watching media that was terrifying, isolated himself to online groups that were far right, radical, and he was growing more and more violent, not just to the family but to the people around him. And it scared me. And then when you saw January 6th, how soon after did you realize your father was involved and that you had to act further . It was while they were pointing guns at the doors of the house. You saw him there . He was texting my mom and facetiming her, and it was delusional. And did you have any hesitation about going further . I mean, he is your father, but as you say, you saw him there with guns and prosecutors said he lit the match for January 6th. Of course. It was the hardest decision ive ever made and it continues to haunt me to this day, but i dont regret it and i still feel for him and my family. So, steven, lets turn to you now. Talk to us, please, if you will, as to how you came across this idea, this project, how it came to be. Well, im the artistic director of the Fountain Theatre in Los Angeles and we have a long history of creating and developing new work that is political or dramatizes urgent issues of the time, and in november i was hunting for a work of theatre that would somehow add our voice to the national election that were involved in. So, i was reading all kinds of scripts, hunting for plays, wasnt finding what i was looking for. And then i remembered the story of this young man who turned his own father in to the fbi because of his Dads Role in the attack on the u. S. Capitol. So i googled it, and when i discovered that the entire court transcripts were available online for public access, because it was a federal case, and then when i clicked on the transcript and i read the testimony, jacksons testimony and the crossexamination between the two attorneys interrogating this young man in federal court who had just turned his father in to the fbi, i was riveted by it. And then i realized, i have now found my play. Lets Take A Look at one of the more dramatic moments from the play, a fight between the Father And Son. Everybody who was there on the 6th should be locked up for the rest of their lives, everyone. Are you recording this . What . Are you recording this . No. I am not recording. You better not be. Dont betray me. Dont ruin this family. Do not put this family in jeopardy. I am not the one that is putting our family in jeopardy. If you cross the line here, i will do my duty, i will have no other choice. Choose a side, choose a side or die. I put you in this world, i can take you out of it. Dont turn your back on me. Im not turning my back youre turning your back on me as a traitor. Is that whats happening here . If you turn me in, you are a traitor. And traitors get shot. Stephen, just extraordinary drama there. A family story, but as you started to elude to, so much bigger. One that the nation is still processing day in and day out, where there are still January 6th cases being brought to trial every week, and of course its at the forefront of another election. Absolutely. And, to me, what makes this Theatre Work really stand out is that it is verbatim. Its verbatim theatre. This is not a play that i wrote. Every word of this play comes from court transcripts, public statements and case evidence. So every word is the truth coming from the people who spoke it. And it really does dramatize a large political story that this nation is still grappling with, but at the heart of it, fatherland is a Father And Son story. Its a story of a young man who somehow must summon the Moral Courage to stand up and speak out against his own father. To me, it has the echo of greek tragedy, its shakespearean in a way, and yet deeply american. Moral courage is right. And, jackson, of course, your father was convicted. Hes currently serving a seven plus year sentence. What is it like for you to see moments from your life, the most difficult moments of your life being played out on stage like that . So, i initially saw it about a week ago, and i they wanted me to read the scripts and i said, no. I wanted to be utterly surprised, not only because i was nervous about the expectations of such a sensitive topic that has affected thousands of people, people in this room that have been affected by radicalized people in these isolated, dangerous environments. So, walking into that theatre, i was utterly terrified. But walking out, i had finally cried, because through this entire experience it was nearly impossible for me to cry, just because its one thing after another, trying to be a better man. But walking into the theatre and it being verbatim, which i didnt know it was until i left that theatre, it broke me. It was one of the only times i could actually cry about it, because youre just retrospectively looking at stuff and its almost like Brain Fog to a degree when you look back on it, just because it was so insane. You certainly displayed extraordinary bravery. Fatherland is playing november 23rd. Thank you both very much for being here. Thank you. Up next here on Morning Joe, well bring you an update on the major devastation left behind by Hurricane Helene, which turned entire neighborhoods into rivers. Plus, thousands of dockworkers across the country are set to go on strike in the united states. Cnbcs Andrew Ross Sorkin will join us with a look at the direct impact this could have on the national economy. Keep it right here on Morning Joe. And welcome to the fourth hour of Morning Joe. Its 6 00 a. M. On the West Coast, 9 00 in the east. Jonathan lemire and reverend Al Sharpton are back with us, and we begin this hour with the very latest on the aftermath of Hurricane Helene, which made landfall late thursday as the strongest hurricane on record to slam into floridas big bend region, before working its way through the southeast. The storm has claimed at least 89 lives, with many more unaccounted for. Nbc News CorrespondentGeorge Solis, reports from asheville, North Carolina. Reporter this morning the devastating effects of Hurricane Helene reaching far and wide as residents come face to face with destruction and the tragic reality. I dont know if we can rebuild or be able to come back from this. Reporter after the storm swept into the southeast last week, floodwaters taking down bridges and submerging entire towns, like chimney rock, North Carolina, now destroyed. As cleanup begins, communities still under water. From above the city, heartbreaking views, some areas still unreachable by water slow to recede. Ive never seen anything like this. Reporter at a standstill, waiting for hours to fill up at the pump. In North Carolina, many roads are impassable, making rescues even more difficult, and the true scope of the Damage And Loss is still unknown. What Mother Nature can do and the damage is just incredible. My god. Nbcs George Solis with that report. Well stay on that. To politics and the president ial election, that is now five weeks away. Former president Donald Trump and Vice PresidentKamala Harris both hit Battleground States over the weekend. Senior Washington CorrespondentHallie Jackson has the latest. Reporter a Swing StateSplit Screen as Election Day closes in. Former President Trump in the rust belt, Vice President harris, the sun belt, rallying voters in nevada where she called out the former president for saying he wont do another debate. As you say here in las vegas, im all in, im all in even if my opponent is ready to fold. Reporter Vice President harris slamming mr. Trump for his role in killing that bipartisan immigration bill earlier this year, and what she called fanning flames of division and fear. Look, we need a president Who Cares more about solving problems than playing political games and demeaning people. Reporter the Vice President fresh off her visit to the southern border in arizona, earning an endorsement from the states republican former senator, jeff flake. She wants to have a tougher policy than the biden administration has employed, and i think thats certainly needed. Reporter but former President Trump blasting the Vice President on immigration. She should be impeached and prosecuted for her actions. Reporter while escalating personal attacks by insulting her. Kamala is mentally impaired. Only a Mentally Disabled person could have allowed this to happen to our country. Reporter some republicans pushing back. Hes questioning her mental competence and i think thats insulting, not only to the Vice President , but to people that do have mental disabilities. Reporter but mr. Trump doubling down sunday. Crooked Joe Biden became mentally impaired. Sad. But lying Kamala Harris, honestly, i believe she was born that way. Reporter and in the same speech, speaking about crime. See, we have to let the police do their job, and if they have to be extraordinarily rough reporter and after last year, suggesting police should shoot shoplifting. They have to be taught. If you had one really violent day, one rough hour, and i mean real rough, the word will get out and it will end immediately. Thats nbcs Hallie Jackson with that report. Jonathan lemire, doubling down, tripling down, a day of unbelievable violence, calling for that, and then, again, im struck, Donald Trump says that Kamala Harris has been Mentally Disabled since she was born. Well, why did you look so bad in the debate against somebody that you say is Mentally Disabled, and even beyond that, even if you dont believe the republicans who said he lost that debate, even if you dont believe members of his own team who quietly are saying he lost that debate, as to the question if she was Mentally Disabled at birth, why did Donald Trump give her thousands of dollars in her campaign in 2014 to Run for senate as a democrat . If she were Mentally Disabled, why wouldnt Donald Trump want to debate her again, which he is refusing to do . And as you well know, the Vice President took out an ad during the georgia Alabama Game to taunt him for not doing that and flew a plane over the stadium that had a banner that suggested he do so. What we saw over the weekend is just another low in terms of Donald Trumps rhetoric, and a dangerous one. About the call for violence, but also these racebased attacks. Reverend Al Sharpton, we started the show some hours ago talking about how one of trumps reflexes, one of his crutches is he goes to his most basic instincts. Weve heard from republicans who are anxious about the state of this campaign right now, which at best is a tie for Donald Trump. For him, its back to where it all began, which is racism, right . Thats where his 20152016 campaign kicked off with slurs against mexicans, birtherism, and now as we head into the Run'>Stretch Run of this election, he is focused on nothing but race, and its ugly and seems like its getting worse. He doesnt know any of the strategy, because he did start his political campaigns on birtherism, he has a long negative racial history here in New York, and hes like an entertainer that just has no new material. Hes gotten where he cant hardly go on stage without fumbling. I mean, to listen to his speeches and the incoherence of what hes saying, he can only go back to what he knows, which is race. Because the rest, he just completely embarrasses himself. The danger, though, is that a lot of people are playing into it and listening to it, and i always say to democrats, we can laugh and joke about how hes losing it, hes still very much tied in the polls in key places. He should not be underestimated. And it tells us a lot about the work that we have to do in this country, when a man can stand up and talk about lets have one violent day, and he doesnt lose any points on the polls, we have a long way to go and were the ones that are going to have to bring our country to that place. All right, lets move to foreign policy. Israel continues to hit targets in lebanon, days after the killing of the leader of hezbollah. Nbc news chief foreign correspondent Richard Engel has the latest from beruit. Reporter israel is widening its war in lebanon and far beyond it, carrying out its deepest attack overnight in Lebanons Capital in nearly 20 years. The strike happened in the middle of the night, and for the first time it is not in the southern suburb of beruit, the Hezbollah Stronghold in this city, but right in the heart of the commercial district, and that has many people in this city very nervous that now no area is off limits. Israel is hunting hezbollah across beruit and targeting all of irans malitias in The Middle East. Yesterday, israel carried out a major strike in yemen, the Port City now in flames is under the control of a malitia called the houthis, backed by iran and who have been targeting ships in the red sea. But lebanon remains the main focus of israels expanding war. Israel said it wants to destroy hezbollah, the Crown Jewel in Irans Axis of resistance. New images show the massive crater made by the u. S. Made 2,000 Pound Bunker bombs they used to kill Hezbollahs Leader last week and now israel is hitting hezbollah while its down and in disarray, trying to eliminate every senior and midlevel commander it can find. Biden was asked if an allout war can be avoided, but many lebanese have no faith the u. S. Can or wants to stop this. This morning, we visited an office complex, now full of families who have just fled south beruit. She thinks if israel does invade, it will only make hezbollah stronger, because Guerilla War is the groups specialty. Many here remain local to hezbollah, hearing Nasrallahs Name as they wait for his replacement to be announced. Lets bring in White House reporter for the Washington Post, and Columnist And Associate editor for the Washington Post david so israeli strikes in yemen, in lebanon, going after irans terrorist proxies across The Middle East. It is almost as if israel is daring iran to push back. And right now, does it not look like iran is refusing to take the bait . So, joe, israel is going all the way against every enemy, taking the fight to levels that weve been fearing for many months. Obviously, israel believes that iran is worried enough about the consequences of getting involved directly that its going to mostly stay on the sidelines. Well have to see. Projections about The Middle East are notoriously wrong, but thats the way it looks now. The destruction in lebanon following the destruction In Gaza is painful to watch. My strongest feeling is that this is a moment for the united states to help lebanon regain its sovereignty, with the state within a state thats hezbollah now really crumbling. Its a moment for the united states to provide radically more support for the lebanese armed forces, to take back their sovereignty so they go to the border of israel, they enforce discipline, they make sure hezbollah doesnt come back. I feel this strongly because ive been watching lebanon for 45 years, and this is a moment, as bleak as it seems, when there actually could be that positive outcome if the administration will get serious about it. David, can you give us some insight on how israel how israel intel services and the idf, who fared so horrifically on october the 7th, were humiliated in front of the world, Benjamin Netanyahu funding hamas for years, telling qatar to step up. Waiting, 12, 13 hours to rescue israelis that were beaten, savaged, raped by hamas. What has happened since october the 7th, how is the idf regaining footing in such a way to pull off what can only be called just an extraordinary attack against the leadership of hezbollah . Joe, i think in part, its the shame and bitter selfcriticism that the israeli military, all the relationship went through in the aftermath of october 7th. I talked to them in those weeks afterwards and they were crushed and shattered. They knew how their actions, their inaction had betrayed israel, and theyve been struggling to find, ever since then, a level of operating precision that can deliver knockout punches to their adversaries. But it begins with the recognition of how poorly they performed in the leadup to october 7th. How did they do so badly then, when theyre obviously in an operational sense brilliant now. Thats a puzzle that historians will write about. I want to read that book. But i do know for many israeli intelligence officers, and indeed i suspect the prime minister, these have been moments of vindication, justification. We know we failed, this time were succeeding. Lets dig into your reporting, your people is entitled in part u. S. Braces for potential iranian retaliation and what are the possibilities on that front . When i spoke with senior officials over the weekend, the different scenarios they were preparing for, and they cautioned that it was hard to predict exactly what would unfold over the next couple of days, but they said they were preparing for potential iranian attacks through their proxies on u. S. Troops, which weve seen in the region, which weve seen at various points over the last year. They were preparing for direct iranian missiles into israel the way we saw on april 13th. The official i spoke with said, before april 13th, they would have been extremely worried about that type of scenario, but that after the april attack, when the u. S. And its allies and israel were able to strike down the iranian drones and missiles, that they feel reasonably prepared for that type of scenario. And then the other one is just generally a direct attack from hezbollah against israel and attacks from proxies in the region. So they anticipate that something is coming, theyre trying to brace for the range of possibilities. But, again, theyre not sure. And i think the other important note is that the u. S. Has been or at least has not known about what israel was doing over the last two weeks against hezbollah. They didnt know ahead of time about the pager and handheld radio attack, they didnt know they were going to launch a strike to take out nasrallah. I think theyre unsure of whats coming next and they are still cautioning israel against a fullscale Ground Invasion of lebanon. All right. The Washington Post, thank you very much for your insight. Union workers at east Coast Shipping ports are scheduled to go on strike at midnight. The two sides have so far failed to reach an agreement over wages and the current Labor Deal expires today. A Worker Stoppage of this size threatens to halt Container Traffic from maine to texas, and cost the u. S. Economy as much as 5 Billion each day. Yikes lets bring in the coanchor of cnbcs squawk box, Andrew Ross Sorkin. Andrew, is it going to happen . Look, it looks like its going that direction. And youre seeing, across the ports on the east coast, boats rushing to get into the port and get that emptied. Because as you said, its 5 Billion a day. Its not just the Dollar Amount that matters. For every day that the ports are shuttered, its going to take a week to get that material that would have been there in that one day out. So youre going to start to create real Supply Chain issues across the country that are going to take some time to undo themselves once the strike is over, and even then we talked about the money, the 5 Billion figure. It becomes, quote, unquote, inflationary, and thats the worry at the moment. Where things stand with the employees, i dont think we know just yet. But a lot of employees around the country, given the Inflation Weve seen over the past couple of years, have asked and gotten, u. P. S. Workers and others have gotten big raises. And clearly the port is pushing back. Well see where that debate lands, probably when i talk to you tomorrow. Yeah, tell me about mark cuban Offering Advice to Elon Musk on the support of Donald Trump. Oh, my goodness. What a debate going on on Twitter Or X overnight or over the weekend between the two of them. They have taken this to a new level and, in fact, you have mark cuban factchecking now Elon Musk on some of his claims by using Elon Musks own ai agent, effectively asking the ai whether Elon Musk is being accurate or inaccurate, and the ai saying, this is not all accurate, let me explain whats wrong with this. Right. But its really about the argument that mark cuban is making is about loyalty and whether people who have supported former President Trump in the past thinking that they are going to gain some kind of loyalty from him and be able to cash in their chips in some way, whether theyre able to ultimately do that. And he made the argument to Elon Musk that he wont. Well see, of course. Theres a long line of those who have been able to. Finally, lets talk about the Ai Bill in california. I talked to liberals, i talked to moderates, i talked to conservatives, everybody understands that ai that the government needs to get involved in managing the wild, wild west of ai, technology that could be every bit as devastating as nuclear energy. A cynic would look at a lino vetoing a bill and think they were bought off or intimidated by silicon valley. What happened . Why did Gavin Newsom Veto that bill . I think look, i think hes concerned about what it would mean for california and what it would mean for all of the Technology Industry thats based there. I think there was some real questions about the bill itself. I dont think this is over in the state of california, nor do i think its going to be over in many states throughout the country and whether well ultimately get a federal law. Oftentimes a State Law that goes into effect, therefore forces the hand, if you will, of a federal law. But you guys, the author of nexus, you had him a couple of weeks ago and hes effectively called for what parts of this bill called for, liability, effectively liability for those making these ai features. And depending on whats spit out of them, that those companies would have liability for whats on it. This is somewhat akin to a little bit of the Debate Weve been having around Social Media and whether Social Media companies should be liable for the things that are spit out, in this case by other humans in it. I think, as i said, this is sort of the beginning of a long debate. It is far, far from over. Cnbcs Andrew Ross Sorkin, thank you, as always. We appreciate it. Take care. Andrew is going to be ringing the bell today. Thats going to be fun. Tell us about that, andrew. Im going down there right now. You know, theres no gavel. I think you press a button. Its the 25th anniversary of nasdaq moving to times square. Oh, my gosh. We just Rung the bell for you. Thank you. Bye, andrew. Have fun with that. Former President Trump says he will negotiate a deal between Russia And Ukraine that is, quote, good for both sides. He made the comment before going into a meeting with ukrainian president volodymyr zelenskyy, their first in five years. So we have a very good relationship and i also have a very good relationship, as you know, with President Putin, and i think if we win, i think were going to get it resolved very quickly. I really think were going to get it resolved. I hope we have more good relations. Oh, i see. But, you know, it takes two to tango. The president wants it to end and he wants it to end as quickly as possible. He wants a fair transaction to take place. And i think i mean, right now im campaigning, so right now i dont have much to do with it. It should stop and the president wants it to stop, and im sure President Putin wants it to stop, and thats a good combination. That was trump after their meeting in an interview with Fox News. Trump also posted on Social Media claiming the war would end quickly if hes reelected to the White House, but he offered no specifics as to how he would accomplish that. Well, he said that ukraine is not even a real country, basically, and said so many have died that it suggests that it needs to be ended on russias terms. To claim that his onetime national security adviser, h. R. Mcmaster, is very skeptical about. I dont really buy it in terms of, hey, in 24 hours. I think its a real myth, its a misunderstanding of war, to assume that you can get a favorable political outcome without a favorable military outcome. Thats never really happened in war. And so i think the right course of action is, if you want to accelerate progress toward settlement, is to convince putin that hes losing the war. I think thats the only way you get a favorable settlement. How do you do that . You demonstrate our resolve to continue to support the ukrainians as they defend themselves against this continued onslaught by the russians. Thats how you get to maybe favorable conditions for negotiation. All right, lets bring in Staff Writer at the atlantic, cohost of the podcast entitled autocracy in america, authoritarian tactics already at work in the united states, and where to look for them. David is still with us as well. Lets start with you, and, of course, autocracy, talks about how, you know, when we talk about free trade, we talk about free Trade Crossing borders and enriching the world. Autocracy talks about Autocracy And Crossing borders, and actually reinforcing dictators, autocrats from venezuela to belarus. Talk about your series and what youre trying to help americans better understand. So, one of the arguments of autocracy in america and, by the way, its related to what you were just talking about with trump, putin and zelenskyy, is that americas relationships with the outside World And Americas alliances also influence american democracy and american habits and american behavior. You can look back over time, the fact that weve had democratic allies in the past has been influential in our own democracy. There are older examples of our british abolitionism which had an influence on american abolitionist. During the cold war, when we put democracy at the center of our foreign policy, it had an effect domestically. Were there to be a shift, were the united states to be linked instead with the world where the war in ukraine to end was some kind of american russian alliance designed to crush Ukraine Or Crush europe, which is one of the things that trump might mean when he talks about ending the war in one day, that would have an influence on us, too. The practices of russia, which are already here, would expand the influence of anonymous companies and offshore bank accounts, all that stuff which is typical of the autocratic world which we helped cocreate. That would have an influence. Certainly trump using, unconsciously or not, using this as a model for his own style of government. Lets zero in on this matter in ukraine. You could see president zelenskyy there just loathing to be next to Donald Trump but realizing he has no choice. Trump has a chance of being president and hes got to do everything he can to keep the pipeline open. Talk to us about how the rest of the world is watching a moment like that and might be preparing for Postnovember Reality in which we Cant Count on the united states, because the u. S. , if trump wins, might be siding with these autocrats. First lets be clear about one thing. This war could end tomorrow. All putin has to do is leave. He started the war, hes still pushing the war forward. I think h. R. Mcmaster is right about convincing him that hell lose or that he cant win, thats really the only way we get to negotiations. Its not about pressuring zelenskyy, its about persuading putin to stop fighting and thats still in our power. But, yes, youre right, the rest of the world is listening to that, theyre looking at it, theyre beginning to make adjustments. To some degree, the rise of the far right in europe is partly inspired by trump. We just had an austrian election that went to a party founded by former ss officers. Theres a sense that the use of violent rhetoric like we now have, which is quite common in the united states, is somehow okay, the demonization of immigrants or minorities, that this is somehow okay. The united states is a leader in not just its military power, but as a moral example. When people hear trump and they say trump, they imitate him. And you can see it in the autocratic world and democratic world alike. David, i want you and ann to discuss the topic of your latest column dont underestimate the risks of escalation over ukraine and you talk about the real concerns about vladimir putin changing his nuclear doctrine, changing his nuclear policy, and perhaps Saber Rattling or perhaps drawing a red line that hes not going to allow the united states to cross. What are your thoughts . So, joe, during this last week of intense debate about whether or not the u. S. Should extend the range of atacms in ukraine, i talked to intelligence analysts about what their advice to President Biden is as he considers what to do, and theyre pretty clear that they think the risk of escalation, and by that they mean horizontal escalation, probably not straight up to nuclear, is significant. There are a lot of things that the russians could do. Theyre already waging extraordinary campaign of sabotage inside nato countries, but there are additional ways they could strike at america, american interests. Theyve threatened directly to begin cutting underwater communications cables, theyre already giving their most sensitive technology, submarine technology, one of the Crown Jewels, to china in a way the people in the united states didnt think would happen. They could similarly give north korea the ability to strike the united states. The risks of escalation are real. I think ann and i both feel that the american strategy of just opening that ukraine can win a prolonged war of attrition has some problems. Ukraine is exhausted and there have to be some ways for ukraine to increase the pressure on russia. After these conversations, i was more skeptical the best way to do this is sending these missile strikes deep into russia when there are other ways you could use the missiles that might have strong effects. Im curious what ann thinks. David writes in his column, russia has been signaling ever more loudly that Longrange Missile strikes are a red line. Ukraine is striking deep into russia with swarms of drones and rockets. Putin is revising his nuclear doctrine to treat attacks by nonnuclear states, like ukraine, backed by nuclear states, like the united states, as a, quote, joint attack on the russian federation. How much should we be concerned with this new red line thats been drawn . So, i cannot stress this enough, putin has been doing this since the beginning of the war. Any time he thinks that ukraine might have a chance at winning, any time ukraine is pushing ahead this happened in the autumn of 2022, it happened before the war began he starts, once again, talking about escalation, he starts talking about nuclear weapons, he starts stepping up the rhetoric. This is designed so that we selfdeter, its designed to prevent us from helping ukraine to win. Are you suggesting theres never a red line that hes going to draw that he may actually respond to . Because this is an existential gamble. I mean, if we get this wrong and theres a nuclear war, we can talk about it the next day, hopefully. Look what the ukrainians have done. They have occupied a part of russia. Theres a ukrainian occupation of russian territory. Theyve not responded. The ukrainians pushed the black Sea Fleet out of the port using sea drones, actually, which they invented. That was supposed to be a red line. They hit crimea, theyve been hitting russian troops, they hit russian ammunition dumps deep inside russia, theyre hitting targets all the time using drones. And these are not setting off any kind of escalation. I mean, theres a longer conversation to have about how putin really could use nuclear weapons and what that would mean. Its not clear that theres a way he could do it that would help him win the war, and thats a separate conversation. But remember that the russians see this differently from us. We look at it rationally, we do this and they do that. Theyre looking all the time at just how they can intimidate us, how they can win the war rhetorically, how they can convince us ukraine is losing, convince us its too expensive. Theyre playing an enormous game of information war, and just too often we concede to it. David, final thoughts . So, i have the greatest respect for ann and i wish i could just dismiss what putin is saying and doing as a bluff. What i try to do in this article is to describe as carefully as i could what the analysts say is already happening. Through this year he has, in fact, been escalating the tactics hes using, theyre getting to a level that theyre really concerned, u. S. Officials, british officials, there are sabotage operations all over europe now. Its not just talk. I think its crucial that we find ways to help ukraine. I just would ask ann to think whether this particular way that putin keeps underlining is the best way to do it. I think weve got to help ukraine, this is a crucial time, a russian victory would be bad for everybody for a long time. I couldnt agree more. Its just a point of Clarity And Skepticism about this particular escalation moment. The Washington Post david ignatius, thank you very much for being on this morning, and Staff Writer at the atlantic, ann applebaum, thank you as well. The Podcast Autocracy in america is available now. We have to continue having that conversation. Absolutely. My goodness, that was a look at a limited series on peacock entitled Fight Night the million Dollar Heist. It follows Gordon Chicken Man williams, played by kevin hart, accused of robbing powerful mobsters at an after party from mohammed alis comeback fight. The show features an incredible starstudded ensemble, including our next guest, awardwinning actor, Don Cheadle. You know, don, the rev and i are old enough to remember the ali fight, but the historical backdrop, actually, its pretty incredible, because i was born in atlanta. Atlanta in 1970 was on the cusp of becoming what was then called the new south, post segregation, new south. And thats the backdrop of this movie. Talk about that. Yeah, i think, also, what we would call it is chocolate city, you know. Atlanta was becoming one of the first places that black people with Entrepreneurship And Entry into the businesses was able to turn the city into something that was more reflective of what they were at the time and what their aspirations were. And Thats Kind of what the show has Running in the margins. Everybody in this show, up to and including my character, is trying to in some Ways Hustle and grind and figure out how to make a name for themselves and to find their place in this Thu Society thats opening up for them. And, don, picking up on that, it was also the return of mohammed ali to the ring, so this had to the universal appeal. I was a teenager then, in the breadbasket in New York, and ali was coming back and Leroy Johnson in atlanta was the one that got him the license. Talk about how this event and the plot around it, everybody that was somebody wanted to be there, and it was an opportune time for someone that wanted to do something a little dubious to weigh in. Because this was, like, the event of the century as far as people were concerned because this was alis return to the ring in black mecca. Yeah, thats right. I mean, you think about it now, i still go to fights now. If you attend fights now and you look at who is there, its a whos who of celebrities and everybody is there, like you said. Its a huge event. And this was no different. So, people from all over were coming to this fight, and specifically, you know, black gangsters from the east coast, the West Coast, the south, were congregating to see this fight. And, so, chicken man, this guy who really existed, gordon, pulled together a party to throw in celebration of this fight, and some local smalltime crooks got the bright idea that they should rob all these highlevel gangsters and that would go very well for them and that the score would be something they would get away with. It didnt exactly go that way. Don, you just said those in attendance were a whos who. Same can be said about the cast. Also, kevin hart, samuel l. Jackson, Terrence Howard and others. What was that like, being with a Superstar Cast . How fun was it to put on this show . Well, i love that you framed it by saying a Superstar Cast and then said, also, kevin hart, because thats exactly [ laughter ] no, it was great. This was a call that came to me. Ive been trying to figure out something to do with kevin for a long time, and will packer, who produced this with kevin. This was something that he just said, this is the one, man, this is the one. And once we sort of got into it, and i was the last person cast, so by the time i came on, taraji was in, terrence was in, Sam Jackson was in, kevin obviously was in. So, we really knew that it was, you know, ours to mess up. We had a great story that our writers put together and we just really thought we were going to have an opportunity to do something really big, really prestige, really premium and tell a story that very few people know about. And the fact that will could put together this kind of cast and tell this kind of story that very few people knew about, talk about how in the 70s when the black films started, you would see fred williams and jim brown. Ive never seen Superstars Exploitation Film started, youd see fred williams or jim brown. Ive never seen superstars of this level come together. Well, i think it is a testament to will. And the testament to the kinds of production thats hes put together. And the kind of support that he puts around the people that he brings. We have great keys in every department, as you can see, costume, hair, makeup, the music. Amazing cinemaography. And the way that they took care of everybody, as great producers do. There may be producers that you dont know about. There to do your thing. They created, you know, an environment for us where we could all come together and really just focus on trying tell the story, as accurate, the best we could. What a story. And as don says, its an allstar cast. Yeah, wow. And kevin hart. There you go. Hes right. A limited series. Fight night the million Dollar Heist is streaming on peacock with new ep codes premiering mainly on thursdays. Costar, don cheatle, thank you so much for coming on the show. Take care. Yeah. What is it, 600 no, 435. Plus 100 in the senate, right . Yes, i said house and senate. That was green Party President ial candidate Jill Stein earlier this month on the Breakfast Club Radio show in New York. Unable to answer correctly how many members are in the house of representatives. Shes only 150 off. My god. Lets bring in editoratlarge at newsweek. Tom rodgers, the latest piece, Jill Stein blew it for Hillary Clinton. Will they do the same for harris . Lets start there, will she . Well, all the focus went off thirdparty candidates when r. F. K. Jr. Dropped out but theres real peril for Kamala Harris in terms what remains. Jill stein was responsible for Hillary Clinton not making it to the White House. Her margins, say, in michigan was 50,000 votes. And trump only won by 10,000 votes there. And the whole Trump Math is that, we know, trump has a ceiling. Whether its 47 , 48 . So, he needs to have Somebody Siphon off votes from the democratic candidate in order to win by plurality. And Jill Stein being on the ballot in all of the Swing States, but nevada, is really in a position, when we know that yeah. That the states are coming down to 1 , 2 margin. Hey, tom, just to talk about how it changed history, if not the century, from al gore taking vote. And Jill Stein taking points from Hillary Clinton in 2016, democrats would have won the Electoral College well, they won the popular vote, seven of the last eight. But minus those two, like it thirdparty spoiler candidates, no republican would have been elected president since 1992. Absolutely right. And its not only the stein threat, but Cornell West is on the ballot in wisconsin, michigan, North Carolina and georgia. And so theres a double threat there. Theres also a libertarian candidate on all of the Swing State ballots. Unclear who a libertarian candidate pulls from. Gary johnson the libertarian candidate in 2016 actually polled more than Jill Stein did. But we do know that biden in 2020, was able to actually increase his margin while trumps margin stayed the same as 2016. Meaning biden increased margin over trump probably came off the back of not having stein on the ballot in 2020. And getting that share of thirdparty votes. Tom, help me understand and our viewers understand, that what is the point of the thirdparty candidates . What are they trying to represent . Why are they there . You know i ran in 2004, and i decided to Run in the primaries. I didnt think i was going to be president because it was right after 9 11. But i wanted to be in the debates. I wanted to bring out issues that i felt would not be discussed. What is their point of Running . Theyre not in the debates because theyre not Running in the primaries. I mean, what is the point other than they end up messing up somebody that may be closer to their politics than the other . I think you asked the muddy question, i dont think there is a point other than to be the spoiler. They make the argument they represent viewpoints that need to be on the ballot to give voters a choice, even though they have no Chance Whatsoever of winning or no chance of even getting any Electoral College votes. But its very clear in the case of Jill Stein, in 2016, the russian, through their Social Media efforts, were very much promoting her. Its very clear that both Stein And West have benefited when it comes to Signature Collection to get on the ballot in Swing States that republicanconnected trump lawyers have been involved in their efforts. And republican money, looks like its at the heart of getting west on the ballot. So these are spoiler efforts. And anybody who thinks about voting third party, whether theyre voting because they dont think harris is progressive enough. They dont like her position on gaza, they think because of fracking shes not green enough, altherr doing is electing Donald Trump president. Anybody who knows a neighbor, a friend, who says i dont like either candidate, i think im going to vote third party. Let them know theyre electing Donald Trump if they do that. The piece is online now for newsweek. Editoratlarge tom rogers, thank you very much for coming on the show this morning. We appreciate it. And that does it for us this morning.
