Thanks for joining us and giving us a glimpse of what it is like on the ground. That is our show for this evening. Breaking News Coverage of hurricane helenes expected landfall in Florida Tonight continues right now on the last word with lawrence odonnell. At evening. We are going to get to Under Wiseman another news but we are going to begin with the hurricane. As you just heard, there are 600,000 people already without power. We are going to go straight to nbc News Meteorologist Bill karins at this hour. He has the latest on what the track of the storm is. Bill, what do you see coming . We are into the impact zone. We are now watching that northern Eye Move onshore and it is almost the equivalent of a tornado that is 40 miles right now moving into florida, and it will knock down just about everything in its path. You can see where the storm is. You can see clearly where The Eye is. It has intensified all afternoon and all evening long. It is a solid category four, almost the higher end of category four. Hurricane hunters are in it. They say it is still intensifying right up until landfall and you can see this is the coast here for the really destructive winds are another starting to close in on some of the populated areas. This Blue Box is what we call an extreme wind warning. There are only issued when we have hurricanes with powerful eyes making landfall. This is the equivalent of a Tornado Warning so theyre telling everyone from tallahassee including perry here up to madison, get to your storm shelters, interior rooms, closets, bathrooms. Use blankets, pillows. Try to get as many walls between yourself and the storm because that is how it will feel coming through. This will be a devastating Wind Event over the next couple of hours. On top of everything, the Storm Surge is really Coming Up now. We have historic flooding and even tampa itself, this is the highest we have ever seen a Storm Surge in tampa. Theres going to be a lot of distraction when we wake up in the morning. We will be checking for any new developments in the hour on hurricane coverage. Today, ukraines President Zelenskyy had two meetings at the white house. The first with the president and then a second with the Vice President. In the first meeting, President Biden said this. I see two key pieces. First, right now we have to strengthen Ukraines Position on the battlefield and that is why today i am proud to announce a new 2. 4 billion package of security assistance. Ive also directed the pentagon to allocate all the remaining security Systems Funding that has been appropriated to ukraine by The End of january 20th, and this will strengthen Ukraines Position in future negotiations. Second, we look ahead to help ukraine succeed in the long term. As you know better than anyone, we sat at the Washington Summit that we have to support ukraine on this path to membership to eu and nato and continue to make reforms to counter corruption and strengthen democracy, which you are working mightily on right now. We have to ensure ukraine has sufficient capabilities to defend against future russian aggression, so im proud of the steps we have taken in our partnership on these fronts. Let me be clear. President zelenskyy has also been meeting with some republicans in washington who remain supportive of ukraine. It is crucial for us to be fully understandable and to work in full coordination with the united states, and this morning i talked also to the congressman, both chambers, both parties and i am thankful for their bipartisan support. We believe this war can be won in peace can be close with the united states. Madame Vice President , this is our seventh meeting and not last. We have to keep pressure on russia to stop the war and to make truly lasting and just peace. It is a Top Priority for us and for other freedom loving nations to achieve not fleeting but real peace for us. We need to give sanctions against russia and we need to do that process to immobilize russian assets to protect ukraine. Of course we must work hard to ring all russian War Criminals to justice. Volodymyr zelenskyy is scheduled to meet with Donald Trump tomorrow. Today, Donald Trump said this. I believe i will be able to make a deal between president putin, and President Zelenskyy quite quickly. What does that look like . I dont want to tell you what that looks like. Okay, two things. Second, of course, what it looks like was exactly what the Vice President just described as Donald Trumps position, which is a proposal for surrender. Everything Donald Trump is said about ukraine indicates that he believes the solution is for ukraine to simply surrender to vladimir putin. Our next guest, jen psaki, just interviewed the current second gentleman, Doug Emhoff. You have been front and center in the fight against antisemitism, and you know, i imagine, and your faith has long been important to you. You have talked about it quite publicly and if the Vice President is elected you would be the first jewishamerican to be a first partner, first gentleman, whatever you may call yourself. How does the history of that way on you in the moment . Well, i took and i take being the first jewish white House Principle ever, i take it very seriously. I take the responsibility i am accountable for it and if you recall even before October 7th, really at kamalas urging, we really leaned in on the fight against antisemitism on behalf of the Bidenharris Administration and put forward the first ever national strategy to counter anti semitism, which was released in may of 2023, so we had that out there and when the horrific day of October 7th happened, the administration was ready to take action. It is something i have been working on, speaking about, meeting with released hostages, hostage families. It is intense and a lot of times i dont want to do it. It is too raw. It is too emotional for me, and she is the one who keeps pushing me out there because of the responsibility i have in this role and because she cares about these issues. She is out there fighting these issues just like i am, so when we win and i am the first first gentleman, the first jewish first gentleman, i am going to continue to speak out very loudly and also, what really bothered me a week or so ago is when trump got up there at an event purporting an event purporting to fight anti semitism, and he said vile anti semitic things, long trips that are just terrible and you know, we have to speak out every single time when something like that happens, so im going to continue not to be afraid, not to be intimidated, not to live in fear but to live openly and proudly as a jewish person. When you hear him say things like that, and he said that if he does not win, it will be essentially the fault of jewish americans. One of the oldest tropes. I know you put a statement out on x at the time. Do you worry that he is putting a target on the Backs Of Jewish americans . He is. Take him at his word. He lies about a lot of things but you got to take him at his word on things like this, so yes, this is a disgusting trope, you know, the socalled dual loyalties. Its an outrage and it is not just jewish people who should be outraged. I spoke recently at the groundbreaking for the more memorial at The Tree Of Life in pittsburgh and there i said essentially that antisemitism and hate, it is a Poison Running through the veins of our democracy, so all of us, whether you are jewish or not, need to fight back on this because this hate affects all of us. We all need to come together as a community, coalition, to come together and fight this together. Do you think he is anti semitic when he says things like that . Do you look at him and see the repetition of this type of words and language as anti semitic . Of course it is, and i have said that publicly, definitely. I want to ask you also about Mark Robinson because we are sitting here in North Carolina. You spoke about him just at this event. He also reportedly recommended Hitlers Mein Kampf is a good read. He called himself a black nazi. He is still the nominee for the gubernatorial race here. Josh stein is obviously a great candidate. What do you make of that as you look at the state of the Republican Party . It is pure cowardice. It is shameful. It should not be this way. We need a strong Republican Party. We need people like Liz Cheney and Adam Can Thinker who of Come Out and endorsed Kamala Harris were just you may not agree on every single idea on policy which you agree on who we are as americans. You agree on a constitution and who leaders should be so when you have someone who has made comments like Mark Robinson, he is clearly unfit, unhinged, and should not be running in the fact that Donald Trump was right here in Wilmington Right where i am sitting where he could not disavow Mark Robinson. Hes trying to ignore him but he did not disavow what Mark Robinson said, his candidacy, and it is just shameful. It is just shameful. Donald trump is a guy who said this guy is a star. He said he is Martin Luther King jr. On steroids, has not disavowed any of that so Donald Trump is supporting Mark Robinson. Those are the types of candidates that he is supporting and we can have it. It shows you another of the many examples why Donald Trump is unfit for any job, let alone president of the united states. So, that is what Donald Trump looks like when he is lying and walking away from a reporter. I dont know the situation. Of course he knows the situation. He knows it involves mein kampf, a book Donald Trump himself is reported to be an admirer of. What you make of where this is in North Carolina for Mark Robinson and Donald Trump . Well, as Doug Emhoff just said in the interview, it is cowardice and i think as you just said, of course Donald Trump knows what Mark Robinson has said online, what he is said publicly. We all know what his views are and instead of speaking to that its not only him, by the way. It is also so many leaders in the Republican Party who claim to be people who speak out against antisemitism, who claim to be people who are defenders of equality in the country, and when they are asked, they are silent on this. That is complacency. That is worse than complacency. It is cowardice, but it tells you quite a bit and what i think is behind all of that, in my view, is that Donald Trump handpick this guy. Supports him, has supported him. They are afraid. There is cowardice of trump, too. Theyre afraid of standing up and calling out what is very clearly and antisemitic candidate, and a candidate who is making outrageous statements about Martin Luther King, about being a black. That should be easy to condemn and for some reason it seems hard and we know why, because they are scared of Donald Trump. I am fascinated of what ive seen in your interview with Doug Emhoff. Im going to eagerly watch the rest of it on sunday when you presented, because i have never heard him speak this way. I have had personal chats with him when we find ourselves at the same Coffee Joint in l. A. , which happens from time to time. And, i have at different times been passing through rooms and halls where he is, and then it is just a kind of hello, very brief thing. I have never asked him in those settings, those social settings, anything serious about government or his life in Government Or Anything about it, but here he is talking to you in a way that i have not heard. What did you learn about him in this conversation . One of the things that struck me and you have talked about this, too, is that before Doug Emhoff fell in love with this fierce bad Attorney General who loves to cook, he was a successful entertainment lawyer. He was somebody whos jewish faith was important to him. He is somebody who had his own life before her and i think what i learned about him is how deeply he feels. Obviously he can talk about the economy. He was successful in the business community. Thats a nights nice thing to hear him talk about what he thinks authentically and emotionally about his jewish faith. He speaks about it in a way that i think a lot of people feel across the country who are members of the Jewish Community where you can believe both that what is happening, and that netanyahu is a terrible leader. You can believe that. You can also feel an enormous pain for the suffering of people in gaza and how outrageous that is and you can also feel anguish at the rise in antisemitism and what is being felt by so many jewish americans right now. He got emotional a little bit in that interview. I wanted to share it with you because i know youve talked about this, too, but a lot of people dont feel heard by that and he can speak to people from his own experience and that is one of the pieces of it that really stuck with me but also i will say he is a proud wife guy, meaning somebody who loves to be a strong backer of his incredible wife, and he is proud of that and does not shy away from that and he gave up a lot as a successful person in the private sector to do that, but that was my big take away and that part of the interview really stuck with me because it felt very raw in the moment. I want to go to the last point you made about what he give up because of what his wife achieved and i really wish this would become in washington and elsewhere, the imhoff rule. It should just be the rule of life, that if your spouse publicly seeks power and is elected to power or is appointed to power with say, the Supreme Court or elected to congress, and you support that, the best way to support that is to make sure that you remove any hints of Conflict Of Interest from your occupation, which he did. He was in a giant Law Firm that has offices around the world. He was not doing anything in that firm that had anything to do with government, but some other partners, possibly in the London Office or elsewhere might find themselves doing something like that and he never wanted his name and Law Firm to ever be in any story that could have anything to do with government, so he quit. His highpowered, highpaying partnership. Became a Law Professor in washington, d. C. That is the imhoff model of ethics that is absolutely supreme. It is the highest level of ethics you could ask for in a situation like this. I completely agree and he did it because he believes in his wife, and he is proud to support her and he does not want there to be any conflicts of interest. Hes not out there on the Campaign Trail because he is trying to have a seat in power where he can use his connections in that way. He is out there on the Campaign Trail because he believes that his wife who he supports is the best person to be sitting in that job and does not want to create any conflicts, and that should be how it is. I will say, the other thing we talked about during the interview you know, he is currently teaching at georgetown Law School and wants to continue doing that, something dr. Biden did, has to at the first lady. Thats interesting, too, but that is not a conflict. That is having a role in influencing the next generation of lawyers, something he has enjoyed so there are models to do that side of his spouse been the first lady. I only wish some of the Supreme Court spouses would live by the in half rule and take themselves out of conflict. They should. I was going to say, lawrence, maybe it could be. You know better than most people how the senate works. Maybe it could be an actual ethics rules that have teeth in them. Imagine that. The imhoff rule. He is also a criminal Co Defendant with Donald Trump in georgia for their attempt to overturn the election there in the state of georgia, and another new York City mayor news, at 12 00 noon tomorrow, Eric Adams, the 110th mayor of New York, will become the first mayor of New York to be arraigned on criminal charges. The mayor is expected to plead not guilty at that proceeding in federal Court Tomorrow within Walking Distance of the Mayors Office in City Hall in lower manhattan. In the 57 Page Indictment that was made public today, Mayor Adams is accused of accepting Luxury Travel on Turkish Airlines which is owned by the Turkish Government beginning in 2015 when he was brooklyn Borough President and continuing through his years as mayor. The indictment alleges that the gift of free and upgraded Airline Flights as well as Hotel Accommodations became a bribe in 2021 when Eric Adams used his influence during his successful campaign for mayor to convince the Fire Department to certify the Fire Safety of a new building in manhattan built by the Turkish Government is the headquarters of the turkish consulate in the turkish delegation to the United Nations. The indictment also alleges that Eric Adams knowingly accepted foreign contributions to his campaign from turkey. Those contributions significantly raise the total the Adams Campaign could obtain in campaign matching funds from the city of New York. The indictment says Eric Adams defrauded the matching Funds Program of more than 10 Million of taxpayers money. In announcing the charges today, u. S. Attorney Damien Williams said this. The conduct alleging the indictment, the foreign money, the corporate money, the bribery, the years of concealment as a Grave Breach of the publics trust. Public office is a privilege. We allege that Mayor Adams abused that privilege and broke the law, laws that are designed to ensure that officials like him serve the people, not the highest bidder, not a foreign bidder, and certainly not a foreign power. These are bright red lines, and we allege that the mayor crossed them again and again for years. That is the only reason we are here today. New York Congresswoman Alexandria Ocasiocortez has called for Eric Adams resignation and she did that even before he was indicted. The two most politically important constituents the mayor serves as residents of new York City are Chuck Schumer and hakeem jeffries. Shortly after the indictment was described today, Leader Jeffries issued this Written Statement. The indictment of us sitting there is a serious and sobering moment for new York City. Like every other New Yorker and american, Eric Adams is entitled to the presumption of innocence. That principle is central to the administration of justice in the united states of america. The jury of the mayors peers will now evaluate charges in the indictment and ultimately render a determination. In the meantime, i pray for wellbeing of our great city. Senator schumer issued a statement saying no one is above the law, including the mayor of new York City. The charges are serious and that legal process should now play out speedily and fairly. The New York times has historically had strong influence on members of the congressional Delegation And Tonight a New York times Editorial Board published an editorial entitled, Eric Adams should resign. He has insisted he will not resign and has done nothing wrong. The governor of New York is legally empowered to remove the mayor of new York City and today, governor Kathy Hochul said this. I think it is rather obvious to state that i have not had a chance to read this myself. I am an attorney. Im going to want to read this and absorb the material embedded within it. This is a very serious matter. As the governor of the state of New York i have a unique responsibility here to make sure i do right by also all people in this great state. I represent 8. 3 million New Yorkers. When they elected me to be there governor i became governor of this entire state including the residents of new York City and i want them to know this. I will be deliberative and thoughtful and come to the right resolution on what to do in this moment. That was in the early afternoon before the governor had a chance to read the indictment. Tonight, the Governors Office has released a new Written Statement from the office saying i have carefully reviewed the indictment released by the united States Department of justice. This indictment is the latest in a disturbing pattern of events that has contributed to a sense of unease among many New Yorkers. My focus is on protecting the people of New York and ensuring stability in the city. While i review my options and obligations as the governor of New York, i expect the mayor to take the next few days to review the situation and find an appropriate path forward to ensure the people of new York City are being well served by their leaders. We must give new Yorkers Confidence that there is steady, responsible leadership at every level of government. Joining our discussion now is Andrew Weissman, former fbi general Counsel And Ms nbc legal analyst. Having read the indictment today, i think i now know why it was released this week with leaders from around the world at the United Nations this week. Very much including the delegation from turkey. It seems to me that one of the messages of this indictment was aimed at the United Nations to say to every country there, if you are ever thinking of getting involved in things like this and trying to use influence in the methods described here, we will stop it. I had the exact same view and i think it is useful to think about the charges here. Remember, they are just charges. Mayor adams will have the opportunity to go to trial and have the case proved Beyond A Reasonable Doubt but the message for here is that it really in many ways is directed to politicians but also to foreign countries, saying hands off. It is useful to think of this in conjunction with the department of justice having brought a series of steps through the national Security Division aimed at what russia is doing in a much more sophisticated way than they did in 2016. They now have a whole series of indictments attacking that same phenomenon of saying, we have our eyes on you and we are willing to go public with it. We are willing to call it out and not do what happened in 2016. We are actually on to you and here are the details we know you are up to. Proving bribery has become more difficult with the current united states Supreme Court. What do you make of the way this indictment is written, given how really lenient about bribery the united states Supreme Court has become. The Supreme Court has basically said as long as you bribe afterward it seems fine. Thats not a bribe. Its just a gratuity. So, it is harder but not impossible. You do have to show the quid pro quo. I gave you the money and because of that money you took that action. You did not take that action independently or for other reasons, so it is a trickier charge. I thought what was smart here is that there are five charges. That was the last of the charges. The other four are much more straightforward, which is do not take foreign money in an american campaign and as long as you can show that it was knowing and intentional, it is hard to see how Eric Adams has a defense to that. The one other thing is Damien Williams in a Press Conference Today said something that was unusual to my ears. He said there will be more activity here. There will be more charges. It is unclear whether that will be more charges against Eric Adams, or people who are cooperating who will plead guilty but you usually do not hear something that definitive. Usually it is just like the investigation is ongoing. It is absolutely clear there are more shoes to drop. Jack smith, 180 Page Filing that we dont get to read or eventually get to read . We should eventually get to read it. We did the exact same thing and the more investigation when you would first file with the court under seal The Hole brief. You would give the proposed redactions so the court can review them. The defense has an opportunity to be heard and then the judge rules. Donald trump will be this is the last Standing Argument he has for this. Hes going to be arguing it should never see the light of day because he doesnt want anyone to deal with facts so there will be a lot of private skirmishing we will not see about whether it gets released but knowing that it is Judge Chutkin i think she will rule quickly and we will see a huge chunk of it.
