Tonight on The Reidout the actions that have unfolded over the last ten months, the leaks, the commentary, the demonizing, this did not surprise us that we reached this day. These judges are rigged. The whole thing is rigged. Whats happening here is weaponization at a level that nobody has seen before ever. A tale of two new yorkers. Both facing criminal indictments. Both with a similar style. Maybe the Democrat Adams could be a republican president ial nominee some day. Because he certainly meets the maga ethical standards. Also tonight, Vice President Kamala Harris on the world stage today, meeting with the ukrainian president as Donald Trump was selling, you know, watches. Like the Scam Guy on The Street who sells fake guccis. Plus, the politics of hate, with republican Congressman Clay higgins making vile, racist comments about haitians and Mini Soldier Mark Robinson, aka black nazi, reported to have made an extremely disturbing comment about reverend Al Sharpton. Reverend al is here to respond. But we begin tonight with Hurricane Helene barreling its way toward florida at this hour. An extremely dangerous category4 hurricane, its expected to make landfall along floridas big Bend Coast with winds up to 130 miles per hour. Storm surge along that coast could reach up to 20 feet, which the national Weather Service is calling unsurvivable. Helene has already brought punishing Rain And Flooding across florida, and the state capital, tallahassee, is bracing for what officials are calling a nightmare scenario. Nearly all of floridas 67 counties are under a state of emergency. And 19 counties along Floridas Gulf Coast are under some kind of mandatory evacuation order. Helene is an enormous storm, one of the largest to hit the southeast in years. In addition to florida, the governors of georgia, the carolinas, and virginia have all declared emergencies in their states. Tonight, President Biden urged residents to listen to local officials with warnings. Take this seriously. From the bottom of my heart, please, take it seriously. The tendency is to say i can do this, but you cant. 20foot Storm Surge, you cant. Joining me from tallahassee, florida, is nbc News Correspondent Kathy Park. Lets start with whether or not people in tallahassee are heeding the president s warnings. What share of people have evacuated and are there people still left in town . Reporter joy, good evening to you. Well, i can tell you it appears based on some of the conversations we have had earlier this week that people have heeded those warnings and decided to leave the area altogether, and those who decided to stay, they have decided to actually book some of the hotels in the area where the structure is a bit more sturdy. I want to give you an update on where the conditions stand right now. Were starting to feel the outer bands of Hurricane Helene. You can probably see the rain coming down right now. Here in tallahassee, 55 of the city is under tree canopy, so the big concern is what could potentially happen when you have Hurricane Force winds over this area for an extended period of time. Officials are concerned about downed trees pulling down power lines, and of course, prolonged power outages. Earlier today, we had a chance to speak with some residents who decided to leave their homes and seek refuge at Emergency Shelters and the consensus is people are nervous, theyre very anxious about the storm. They have lived here for many years and weathered a lot of powerful storms but nothing of this scale. They are worried about the impact that this potentially Category4 Storm could have on the region. Tallahassee officials have said they have been preparing for days but really, we just dont know what Mother Nature will do ultimately, as this storm makes landfall. So they are leaning on mutual aid. We know that crews have come in literally from all across the country to help with Recovery Efforts come tomorrow. Nbcs Kathy Park, thank you so much, and please do stay safe down there in tallahassee. Lets bring in meteorologist angie lasman. Just give us sort of an understanding and a scale of what category 4 means. It means widespread destruction, unfortunately. Really, the difference is splitting hairs whether you have a strong category 3 or a weak category 4 or potentially a strong category 4 or 5. This is something we have been warning folks about for days and days now. With that latest update, the winds Coming Up to 130 miles per hour moving at a quick Pace Northeast at 23 miles per hour. You can see how massive this thing is. Thats been one of the stories with this system over the past day or so. As it worked its way north into portions of the Gulf Of Mexico. Those heaviest Rain Bands are working into the coastline, parts of tampa dealing with that. You heard Kathy Park explaining the rain thats starting to work into tallahassee. That eye, though, its showing some signs of strengthening. We have seen it get a little tighter. We, of course, are keeping a close eye on exactly where this part of the system goes because that is the most dangerous. Thats where the strongest winds are, where the most robust thunderstorms are. Its right now 35 miles wide and exactly where that lands and where it comes on shore is where the most Wind Damage is. And to the right of that system, where that eye is, thats where of course we see the strongest Storm Surge. Heres the timing. As we get into 10 00, closer to 11 00, maybe midnight, thats when well likely see landfall. Exactly where that will be, of course, the big Bebd Area likely being a category 4, that would make it the strongest hurricane to make landfall in the big Bend Area on record. That says something, of course. We have tallahassee, Perry Right in that region. Whether theyre on the right side, the strong side of the storm, or the weaker side will make a big difference. That system of course will continue working up to the north and take a little time to weaken, dumping plenty of rain across that region. When it comes to the Storm Surge, we have warnings up. Cedar key, two feet, above the regular Sea Level there. This is going to expand. Were going to see these Numbers Sky Rocket through the evening. We have not seen the worst of it when it comes to that. That goes for the wind speeds as well as the rain across parts of the appalachians up to 2 feet in some locations. When we talk about a 20foot Storm Surge, were talking about a wall of Water Hitting parts of the state. Talk about sort of where were talking about, how much damage were talking about, how much water, how much flooding . To put it in perspective, if you think of 20 feet of Storm Surge, thats unsurvivable, not just the first level of your house, thats the second level of your house too. Kind of a Geography And Topography of this region is what is making it a worst case scenario. This is an area that probably is one of the worst spots in the world to see Storm Surge. We have a really shallow continental shelf. That means theres nowhere else for the water to go. On top of that, the high tide time is happening around 11 30. You have those high tides Coming Up, thats the natural cycles of the tide, and then on top of that, this big shove of water up against the coast, essentially water has nowhere to go. This means miles and miles inland is where youll see that Storm Surge. Not the flooding from the rainfall, this is simply water with nowhere to go rushing in. We have seen the waves coming in in places like tampa. We know what kind of damage this does in places like ian and michael that dealt with this, we have seen the devastation before and unfortunately, thats what theyre going to deal with. Were looking at pictures of people outside. I hope this is not somebody recent and theyre not playing around out there. One last quick question. Its sort of an Obvious Question Living In Florida a long time. Theres a lot of denialism about climate change. How does climate change and the warming of the waters, we have heard about really hot water around the Florida Coastline in the last couple years, how does climate change impact the strength of these hurricanes . Simply put, it does impact it. I think its hard to argue with things like this. Climate central, theyre saying 200 to 500 times more likely the Sea Surface temperatures being this much warmer in the Gulf Of Mexico because of humancaused climate change. And warmer water means more fuel, rapid intensification. I think at this point its very hard to argue against it simply put, Fossil Fuels impacting this situation to say the least. Thank you so much. Now, im going to tell you for a moment a story of two new yorkers. One from brooklyn, one from queens. Both of whom are facing criminal indictments. Both are accused of taking cash from foreign governments, both are accused of enriching themselves while in office. One of them is the mayor of new york city, eric adams. The other is Donald Trump. Today, the fbi formally announced five criminal counts against adams including two counts of solicitation of contributions by a foreign nation as well as Wire Fraud and bribery. Mayor adams engaged in a long Running Conspiracy in which he solicited and knowingly accepted illegal Campaign Contributions from foreign donors and corporations. As we allege, mayor adams took these contributions even though he knew they were illegal. Now, its an allegation that trump is facing as well about the possibility that he took a 10 Million illegal Cash Contribution from egypt around his 2016 president ial campaign. Like trump, since adams took office in 2022, his administration has been caught in several federal investigations. And a statement late last night, adams even sounded like trump when he denied the allegations saying it was a result of him standing up for the people of new york. I always knew that if i stood my ground, all of you, that i would be a target. And a target i became. For months, leaks and rumors have been aimed at me in an attempt to undermine my credibility and paint me as guilty. Enough. I will fight these injustices with every ounce of my strength and my spirit. Given all the similarities one might wonder if you could imagine a world where adams decided to make a run for president as a republican, of course. Why not . He would meet all the standards as the current nominee, potential felon, potential bribe taker. In fact, according to the 57page Indictment that very idea pops up as a motivating factor for one of the foreign nationals allegedly making an illegal contribution to the Mayors Pocket who believed that adams might one day be the president of the United States. Adams will be arraigned tomorrow in a federal courtroom in the city he serves. Joining me now is catherine christian, former Manhattan Assistant District Attorney and msnbc legal analyst, and the reverend Al Sharpton, president of the national Action Network and host of politics nation. Thank you for being here. Catherine, i want to go to you first. Something popped into my head as i was thinking through this and literally im talking and thinking at the same time. Could not the Mayor Appeal these allegations on the basis that the Supreme Court has said that a political figure can simply take a gratuity and if he characterized it as a gratuity that was paid for a thing after the briber wanted, theres nothing wrong with it . The Supreme Court said so. Youre talking about the mcdonald case. Im certain that the southern District Attorneys office have made sure that this indictment conforms with that decision, that this alleged gift, gifts, were done in exchange for mayor adams and also the Borough President doing Official Action on the behalf, like getting the Fire Department to approve even though the building didnt pass a fire inspection, to build the turkish consulate. So im pretty certain that the Southern District would not have charged bribery if they did not believe they had proof Beyond A Reasonable Doubt that conformed with the Supreme Court decision. Rev, i have to say, this behavior sounds a lot like the Stuff Trump would do. You know, put some money get some money here, get some money there, a little bribing, a little you know, using money to grease the wheels. Well, we are going to see at trial. I mean, clearly, there are many of us very concerned. Let me say this. I think mayor adams had done a job that many of us felt was effective that he didnt get credit for. Crime was down, city was moving forward. And now hit with this. And what were concerned about is the standard. You know, he should not be judged by anything but the trial. He should not be removed. They didnt remove senator menendez. They let him perform. And what were saying is it must be one set of rules. I do not believe Damon Williams is someone that is the enemy of the interests of people who brought the indictment. I do not feel that eric adams, who i have known for many years, is just a career criminal. And so i think that we need to let that play out. A lot of us talk about meeting this weekend to take a position, but were clearly not calling on him to be removed, by what standard . We have seen other peopledited, they were not removed. And that would send a signal that maybe this is more political than it is dealing with the merits of the case which we have not determined one way or another in our review. We have our lawyers in national Action Network looking at that. Lets talk about it. Heres Donald Trump saying he thinks, hes asked whether he thinks mayor adams should resign. He makes it political. I dont know the mayor well, but hes been fairly generous to me in his statements for a while. I thought you had the worst mayor ever that we had prior to him. I will say this. I watched about a year ago when he talked about how the illegal migrants are hurting our city and the federal government should pay us and we shouldnt have to take them. I said, you know what, hell be indicted within a year, and i was exactly right. Because thats what we have. We have people that use the Justice Department and the fbi at levels that have never been seen before. And catherine, that has already become a rightwing talking point. Maga folks are now claiming hes only being indicted because he criticized the biden harris immigration policy. Heres the challenge i have with that. Here are the people that the Justice Department has gone after just in the last year or so. Senator bob menendez, democrat. Convicted. Hunter biden, president s son, convicted. Representative henry cuellar, democrat, indicted. And mayor eric adams. Theyre going after a lot of democrats for a Justice Department thats trying to weaponize itself against democrats. Thats correct. And u. S. Attorney williams is a man whose reputation is one of integrity and high ethics that hes not political. That he wouldnt just, you know, go after the mayor of new york because the, quote, Biden Doj was upset because the mayor was upset about immigration. So this is, as the Reverend Al said, this is an indictment. It is an accusation. It is not proof Beyond A Reasonable Doubt. These allegations have to be proven in court. And Criminal Defense Attorneys normally will say this indictment is just a piece of paper, which is true. Its a very factually detailed indictment that has very serious charges. Its clear from when you read it that there are clearly several people who probably are cooperating or confidential sources against the mayor. That again doesnt mean that Thats Proof Beyond A Reasonable Doubt, but these are very serious charges. Wire fraud is 20 years if hes convicted. Serious charges. As faces trump. To reverend sharptons point, they should be judged equally and Donald Trump should not skate on Things Mayor adams has to pay for. I want to let you comment on Rudy Giuliani Being Disbarred in d. C. For his role in trying to steal the 2020 election. I think that that is something that we have seen clearly coming with Rudy Giuliani had done, certainly, you could not have him as an officer of the court, with the kinds of things that we have known in terms of evidence. He deserves his day in court. But he deserves a day in court, and i really hope that we dont see Donald Trump and others try and weaponize what has happened to democrats to say therefore that Donald Trump is a victim or a target of someone. Donald trump was convicted of crimes. Hes a felon. If i were facing a court date, i would not want a 34count Felon trying to speak on my behalf. I think that Donald Trump needs to stay out of this and let the courts handle it. And i think we need to see that the city keeps moving as it was moving under erics administration. I will note that if he was to be removed, Jumaane Williams will become the mayor. We can talk about that at another time. A very progressive brother, but well get into that another time. To attend the u. N. General assembly, also met with President Biden, who announced today that we will that he will send more security assistance. Meanwhile, Donald Trump is out there Disparaging Zelenskyy but he later said he would meet him on friday. Every time zelenskyy comes to the United States he walks away with 100 billion. I think hes the greatest salesman on earth. But were stuck in that war unless im president. What deal can we make . What deal can we make . Its demolished. The people are dead. The country is in rubble. This week, trump placed blame on Biden And Harris for the conflict, but not on Vladimir Putin for some reason. And when he wasnt ranting at trump tower, trump was focused on pushing his latest grift. Sounds like even trump is aware that time is running out and hes seeking alternate sources of income by monetizing his gullible cult fan base. Reverend Al Sharpton is with me, and joining me is eugene robinson. I want to start with you because i have to say, when i was watching, and i took some Screen Shots of watching President Zelenskyy with Vice President harris. What struck me about it is, oh, this is what it looks like to be a country with a young leader again, like when we had president obama. Theres something refreshing, and no offense to elderly i love an old person, i really do, but it was nice not to have have an old man with that young man. The look of it was incredible. A nice picture. And it says vigor, it says youth. It says vitality. You know, what that reminded me of was the fact that Vice President harris was the last u. S. Official to talk facetoface with President Zelenskyy before the invasion. A couple days before the invasion. She tried to convince him, its happening. Its happening. You need to get ready for this, and they didnt believe it. But people dont, a lot of people, i guess, didnt understand, maybe they understand now, the extent to which shes been involved in Foreign Policy. She has become really one of the most knowledgeable people in the administration about Foreign Policy because she has been there. Shes met all these World Leaders. Shes participated in these decisions. Rev, it is there is something about having a leader that knows the internet, that is young enough to really understand kind of the technology, the future, nothing against joe biden, who has done a great job in terms of Foreign Policy, but were about to have a young female president of mexico, we have a pretty young canadian pm. Its like this world is sort of changes, the macrons of the world, thats the future. Trump feels very retro. Just to that point, the former u. S. Army commander of forces in afghanistan, stanley mcchrystal, hes now officially endorsed Vice President harris. He said character is the ultimate measure of leadership, for those who seek the highest office in our land. I have cast my vote for character and that vote is for Vice President Kamala Harris. When she sits down with World Leaders like president Volodymyr Zelenskyy of ukraine representing the United States on the global stage, i have No Doubt that shes working on our national interests and not her own. Your thoughts. I think thats a great statement, particularly coming from him, because it shows the capacity of Kamala Harris to not only be president but be commander in chief, and have the respect of those whose lives are on the line, and shes clearly representing the process of trying to aspire to have a real democracy, which most of the world, enlightened world, has been moving toward. And you have an opponent who romances and writes Love Letters to dictators by his own admission. Trump has defended putin. Hes defended other dictators. To have something not only young but someone that understands that the world is moving toward a democratic process, even in places that never had it, and shes in sync with what the world has moved toward. And the United States has represented. That is why people come here, because they look for democracy. Theyre not looking for a fifth Avenue Version of Vladimir Putin. Amen. And Donald Trump was just doing weird stuff today. He posted a letter that its not clear that it can be authenticated as to whether the text is real, and its a letter hes claiming, to stay with you for a moment, because you know this guy. Hes writing this letter saying we all want this peace. Its this Peace Plea hes claiming it is from sincerely voload mere. Hes claiming Volodymyr Zelenskyy wrote him a personal letter like kim jonguns love letter. I mean, everything that he does is geared toward his narcissism, and i frankly am worried about his capacity because here is a guy who puts up letters that No One can really source or confirm. He talks about giant faucets out in the pacific. Hes got a hangup with wind mills. Im concerned. Yes, i have known him a long time, and hes diminishing and even his own way of performing. Hes a performer that has lived way past his prime. And where think the voters are going to say that in november. I mean, its fan fiction, it looks like. He looks like hes posting fan fiction. Hes posting fan fiction, and the other thing about trump thats so dangerous in Foreign Policy is that everything is personalized. You know, i mean, nations are not supposed to have friends. They have interests. They have national interests. They have nationtonation alliances. Its all about whats this person, this person ever say something nasty about me. And this Person Bow to me . Then hes okay. And by the way, can we put this on the screen . What kind of a president ial candidate is selling schtick, Selling Grifty Stuff . This is crazy. Hes got nfts, watches for sale, hes got sneakers for sale. Hes hawking crypto, hawking bitcoin. This is madness, yall. This is not someone running for president. This guy is running to be on the home shopping network. Why is he running for president . This is bizarre. Its bizarre behavior. And he, im telling you, his brain dont work good. Yesterday, apparently triggered by a filing by a haitian organization to bring criminal charges against Trump And Jd vance for spreading false claims about haitian immigrants in springfield, ohio, louisiana Congressman Clay higgins took the racism to the next level of the gutter. Writing in a post on twitter, lol, these haitians are wild. Eating pets, voodoo, nastiest country in the western hemisphere. Cults, Slapstick Gangsters but damned if they dont feel all sophisticated now filing charges against our president and vp. Now, i assume hes referring to Trump And Vance who just as a reminder are not the president and Vice President of the United States. Oh, but it didnt end there. Higgins goes on to say, and i quote, all these thugs better get their Mind Right and their ass out of our country before january 20th, unquote. Well, after receiving backlash from normal people, he deleted that post. House speaker Mike Johnson said his fellow louisiana congressman, quote, prayed about it and he regretted it and he pulled the post down. But it sure didnt seem like he regrets it that much. As higgins then wnt on to tell cnn, i quote again, its all true. I can put up another controversial Post Tomorrow if you want me to. I mean, we do have freedom of speech. Ill say what i want, Unquote Wrk back with me, Reverend Al, eugene robinson. Apparently the hood dont fall far from the road in louisiana. Sometimes it comes down in ones eyes. Heres a quote from same clay higgins. This is about how he voted for David Duke, the klansman, The Grand Wizard of the klan in 1992, to be the governor of louisiana. Quote, Duke Wont get the vote, but Pat Buchanan will. Pat represents much of the same positions that clay higgins, regardless of the fact that davids a Home Boy and all that. The boys a nazi and thats a real problem, said mr. Higgins, who nevertheless voted for mr. Duke. He also endorsed David Duke, i mean, endorsed Donald Trump in 2016. Hes look, he sounds exactly like the white Supremacist Segregationists from when i was a little child in south carolina. I mean, exactly like them. Someone who wouldnt be that blunt about their racism and their White Supremacy. Its just breathtaking. And i dont know whats going on in louisiana, rev, but Steve Scalise once described himself, and hes number three in the house, as David Duke without the baggage. Thats a guy whos very high up in the republican party. Let me let you listen to Senator John Kennedy Lashing Out in a Hate Crime Hearing also in louisiana. Let me ask you one more time. You support hamas, dont you . You support hamas, dont you . Sir. Please. I think its exceptionally disappointing that youre looking at an Arab American witness before you and saying you support hamas. You know whats disappointing to me . You cannot bring yourself to say you dont support anra, you dont support hamas. You should hide your head in a bag. I dont even know where to go. I dont even know who is more racist, clay higgins or that guy, kennedy. John kennedy. I think that what is really telling is none of these people have been denounced by the rnc, the republican national committee. None of them have been denounced by Donald Trump. And all you have to do is reverse it. If you had someone in the democratic party that was saying that about any race of people, whether it be Arab Americans, whether it be someone like higgins, where he just outright comes out with his blatant racism, and it has become normalized by the leaders of the republican party and Donald Trump. Donald trump has taken guys like fuentes, known white supremacist, to dinner at maralago. So i dont know how many times people have to see the example of how they have tried to normalize racism, White Supremacy in this country to understand what we are dealing with here. Theyre saying it out loud. And theyre saying it consistently, and No One is looking at the fact that these are the people that are shaping the laws that all people have to live under. The danger is theyre not just guys on a college tour. These are senators, congressmen, and president ial candidates and a former president. That ought to be frightening to us. The old dixiecrats are the new republican party, unfortunately. They just flipped brand names. I want to really quick, just to say its not just in the deep south. Quick, eugene. You can go to missouri where they just killed an innocent man. They took a gentleman who was who should have been pardoned, marcellus williams. The guy who didnt want to pardon him, the current governor, hes a pardon machine, including pardoning those the white couple that held guns at black Lives Matter protesters. He pardoned them. And something like 80 this man. And of the people he did pardon, 89 of the numbers were white. Different strokes for different colors. Very much so. Rev, i want to let you have a response to Mark Robinson. He made a comment that the cops should have shot you. Apparently republicans dont like it when experts warn you about weather events like tornadoes, severe thunderstorms, flash floods, winter storms, high wind and hurricanes force their ideology down your throats. They also plan on turning the Department Of The Interior into a place where federal land is sold to the highest bidder for all major western industries like oil, mining, and timber. Lets get to what the consequences would be of taking what is left of our federal lands and turning them over to developers. What would be the impact on climate change . First of all, yes, climate changes worse because of human activity. The hurricane right now that you spoke about, hurricanes have been happening in this country for thousands of years. In florida you have the everglades, right . This healthy ecosystem that buffered those kinds of storms and yes when you alter landscapes they are not going to work the way they should. So that is why the invest in America Agenda that the Biden Harris Administration put forth to help us restore landscapes to the way they used to be. The way they are supposed to be. That, above all, will ensure that we are doing the job we need to for healthy ecosystems to fend off the worst of climate change. Additionally i want to say that President Bidens goal of moving our country to a clean Energy Transition is in full force now and that is also going to help, but yes we need public lands to be healthy. Landscape restoration is important to the department of interior and we will keep doing that work. It is so meaningful for you to be the leader of the Department Of The Interior. You, as an indigenous woman, you more than anyone understand the history of this country the way it was meant to be before it was colonized and because you are very passionate about the things indigenous girls, women, children have gone through from the Boarding Schools and people abused and all of the hardships that indigenous folks have had. Do you feel within the administration that voice, that spirit, that is listened to by this administration and what would be the consequences of it disappearing from The Voice of our federal government . So, i am so honored to serve in this position and as President Biden promised, his administration looks like america, right . More women, more people of color. Our Perspectives Matter and they are important. I appreciate you mentioning the boarding school initiative. You know, healing our country is one thing that we feel is important. We are healing our country spiritually. The boarding school initiative, we are helping americans to know and understand this history that belongs to them, also, giving people a voice so they could lift that burden off of their hearts and their minds. We are also ensuring that environmental justice is a real action in this administration. So making sure that we are addressing Legacy Pollution in many underrepresented communities has also been a hallmark of this administration and we are incredibly proud of the work we have been able to do to heal not only our hearts and minds, but also our land and water. Because the reality is that these climate events disproportionately harm people of color who tend to work in the areas that are lowlying, that are flood prone. That live in areas where Oil And Gas are fighting for the land with people who need clean water, so this is an issue as you said, for so many communities, particularly people who are impoverished and people of color, in terms of the climate crisis. Which is why environmental justice has been such an important issue and we are proud to move those issues forward. I have to ask you. I try to get as much out of talking to you as possible because i think your story is inspiring. I dont know how long you want to be in the federal government or how long you want to do federal service, but have you thought Long Term about yourself . I have heard from folks in the state that they might like to have you as the governor. They might like to see you run for senate. Have you thought about your life longterm or are you committed to federal service longterm . I can say we have 116 days left in this biden Administration And Everyone wakes up every single morning with a long priority list. We are going to do as much as we can in the time we have left. I am so proud to serve our Country And Weve got a lot of work to do and a short time to do it and when i got here four years seemed like a long time and now we just have 116 days left.
