I'm not going to pull in alex jones. I stand by everything i said. They are treasonous, they are traitors. They should get the death penalty. She is a 9/11 truther, a race baiting conspiracy theorist and the newest member of the trump brain trust. In my opinion i like that. Tonight, the republican nominee and his alarming association. Be back i have concerns about her rhetoric and her hateful tone. Then, kamala harris calls for round two. I believe we owe it to the voters to have another debate. As another endorses the democrat. I think kamala harris is the better choice. Plus the battle ground director on where this race stands 54 days out and democrats give the self proclaimed leader on fertilization a chance to prove it. They know that and everyone else knows it. I have been a leader on fertilization. When all in starts right now. Good evening from new york, i am chris haynes. The country just marked the 23rd anniversary of the 9/11 attacks on america that killed 3000 people. Donald trump attended a remembrance ceremony in lower manhattan and as his guest the expresident brought a conspiracy theorist who says 9/11 was an inside job. Her name is laura loomer and she joined trump and running mate j. D. Vance as they took photos with firefighters. You cannot make this up. You would not want to. It is heinous and also, sadly, unsurprising. For almost a decade now donald trump has used his political platform to channel the worst, most vile and disgusting rhetoric, ideas and people and mainstream them into american culture. From reposting trolls in his 2016 campaign to defending some of the neonazis as very fine people in charlottesville when he was president to whipping up violent gangs and militias like the proud boys and oath keepers. He has courted holocaust deniers and endorsed conspiracy theorists of all stripes. In fact just today, get this, npr reported that a nazi sympathizer who spent three years in prison for storming the capital on january 6 was an honored guest at two different events at trump's bedminster golf resort and, yes, that is the photograph of the alleged nazi sympathizer, if you want to take that in. At one of those events, a fundraiser for the january 6 criminals, trump addressed the crowd by video, saying all of the people there, including the man on your screen, all of the people there, you are amazing patriots, have a great time at bedminster. Trump has also forged a bond with far right billionaire elon musk, saying if elected he will put musk in charge of a government efficiency commission and this week when popstar taylor swift endorsed trump's opponent musk responded by posting the creepiest aunt to her on the social media platform he owns. Trump clings to the absolute worst and most dangerous people and if he becomes president again it will be even worse. Laura loomer is exhibit a. The two seem to be rather inseparable lately, spending a lot of time together. That is her coming off his private plane. In addition to being his 9/11 guest, she accompanied trump to tuesday's debate in philadelphia. She has been seen with him in his bedminster club and her name has been on trump's lips for much of this year. A friend of all of ours and this woman is amazing. Laura loomer, where is she? where is she? she is amazing. A fantastic woman. A true patriot. Laura loomer. Thank you. Thank you, laura. It is good to have you. You are very special and you are a very opinionated lady, i have to tell you that and in my opinion i like that. I appreciate all of your support and everybody appreciates it. Yes, thank you. Thank you so much for inviting me to sit with you today. My pleasure, you are the best. It is a cute video like they genuinely seem to like each other. Now many republicans are expressing concern to reporters about loomer's closeness to trump, which you can see for yourself. Everyone who works for him think she is a liability. Others told reporters that loomer contributed to some of the most outrageous conspiracy theories trump is using as campaign fodder. Even in the pantheon of trump sycophants, loomer is a chilling figure. A history of racist and islamophobia comments. She gained notoriety for chaining herself to the door of a twitter office in new york to protest the website banning her after she spread false conspiracy theories about multiple mass shootings. For that band, she also tweeted hateful tweets about immigrants including a story about thousands of migrants dying crossing the mediterranean to safety. She boasted good, clapping emoji, here is to 2000 more. After elon musk bought twitter laura loomer was, surprise surprise, reinstated on the platform. That is where she called 911 and inside job last year, arguing donald rumsfeld helped stage it to take over the national security bureaucracy. Twitter is also where loomer called kamala harris a drug using prostitute. Around that time as donald trump was praising her at rallies, what a patriot, loomer also called for the death of trump's perceived political enemies. I truly believe that the people who engaged in the coup against donald trump and have caused, you know, civil unrest and chaos in our country for the last seven years through crossfire hurricane and also through what i believe are illegal witchhunts against the president of the united states right now. Unconstitutional witchhunts against donald trump. They are treasonous, they are traitors. They should get the death penalty when they are jailed in the next administration. In advance of the debate last weekend, loomer also tweeted that if kamala harris wins, the white house will smell like curry. The kind of thing you hear from maybe a second grader on the playground. A jab at her indian heritage that is so racist that it got called out by a fellow republican who said this is appalling and racist. It does not represent who we are as republicans. This does not represent president trump. That republican was marjorie taylor greene. Yes, the jewish space lasers lady. Her rhetoric and her tone does not match the base. Does not match maga. Does not match most republicans i know and i am completely denouncing it. Here is what j. D. Vance thinks about that as well. Marjorie taylor greene denounced it. In truth, loomer is deploying the same tactics that others in the maga movement including the guy at the top of the ticket have used and use every day. It's not any different. The bigotry, the deflection, the calls to protect free speech. You heard it again this week as republicans continue to spread incredibly violent dangerous lies, falsely accusing haitian migrants in springfield, ohio, of stealing and eating house pets. All week officials said it is a lie, it did not happen. Guess what happened today? yes, the springfield city hall and other municipal facilities were shut down after receiving a bomb threat. Haitian families in that community are keeping kids home from school and staying home out of fear for racist violence. One woman who said her car had its windows broken told a reporter i have to move because this area is no longer good for me. I can't even leave my house to go to walmart, i am anxious and scared. That is the real toll from the racist lie pushed by j. D. Vance and donald trump and it is a lie trump is still repeating in the past few hours. The migrants are walking off with the town's geese. They are taking the geese. You know where the geese are? in the park and even walking off with their pets. My dog has been taken. This could only happen. These people are the worst. It can only happen in your mind, right? again, it is a disgusting lie. I think most people in the here this old man ranting about it know that it is. It is based on a false rumor from a facebook page that spread like wildfire late last month. After a speaker at the springfield city commission meeting warned that, quote, crime and savagery will only increase with every haitian that you bring in and that man, that man turned out to be the leader of a neonazi group calling itself blood pride. He was immediately kicked out of the meeting for his racist rant, but guess what? now they're talking points are the talking points of donald trump and the presidential campaign and the entire republican party. The blood pride guy ranting about the haitians at the local committee meeting is now the voice of the entire republican party. Republicans understand that the lies that are perpetuated about immigrants leads to violence against immigrants and you know how i know? because i heard it from a very close confidant to trump named laura loomer. Every day we see another story about illegal aliens going to the ritz carlton. Illegal aliens getting free flights. Getting free clothes and free cell phones and someone's going to snap. Someone's going to snap. It's going to happen and you know what? i'm not going to care what happens. You know why? because there is only so much people can take. She wants someone to hurt them. It all reminds me of what president joe biden has repeatedly said about his decision to run against trump in 2020. Biden said he wanted to run because of trump's defense of the neonazis in charlottesville. The very fine people in trump's words. Biden said correctly that he was in a battle for the soul of the nation. Biden may be out of the running, but that battle does continue. Donald trump has always been in organizing and rallying force for the absolute worst people and tendencies in the country. The people that march with torches. The people that show up at local city council meetings to spew racist bile. Folks that carry a confederate flag into the capital. People that throw away vital slanders against immigrants. This is not guilt by association. He is flying on her plane. He is using her rhetoric. He is choosing to empower people like laura loomer. Those are the sorts of people who will enjoy greater power in a second term, i promise you, and of all the reasons to prevent him from winning another term, that might be the most important. Congressman dan goldman is a democrat of new york. He served as lead counsel in donald trump's first impeachment and he joins me now. What do you think about the republican nominee bringing a 9/11 truth or again, she posted this last year. This is not, you know, 20 years ago in a dorm room. A 9/11 truth or to come to the 9/11 memorial observances in new york. It is remarkable, chris. I was there yesterday morning. A couple seats down from donald trump and j. D. Vance and it is an incredibly solemn experience, if you have not ever been there before. You had the former president, the current president, the vice president, all there, watching and memorializing the victims who died that day and they died from a terrorist attack from al qaeda at the time and laura loomer has also espoused fan groups for isis, another terrorist group. I think it goes to show you a couple things. First of all, donald trump has no respect for this country. He does not care about this country. He does not know what a patriot is and he only cares about himself. He is notorious for having talked about, as 9/11 was happening, that if the world trade center falls down one of his buildings will now be the tallest in new york city. That is how his mind has always worked. But your point, i think, about who will be near him and empowered in a second trump administration is vital and it is why so many of the former trump administration officials who have worked with him, who know him best, who know him privately, who were responsible for our military and national security and promoting global democracy around the world. They all want kamala harris to be president. They are supporting kamala harris and that should tell you everything you need to know. You represent a district that is a multicultural and multiracial district in the city of new york. I know because you are my congressman and you have a lot of immigrants that you represent. You know, immigrants that have in some communities and some parts of chinatown, who have been the subject of slander. The subject of antiimmigrant violence. Called dog eaters, honestly, through the years. Have faced this kind of libel. What do you say to them? what do you say to constituents and others when you see the most powerful and prominent republican and up and down the line repeating this kind of thing? well it is pretty simple. Vote democrat. But in addition to that, just think about how many people, how many groups of people, how many ethnicities have been disparaged by donald trump in the last eight years. He banned muslims, simply because they are muslim. He ridiculed the chinese american population when covid happened and caused a more than 300% increase in antiasian hate in my district, because of his rhetoric. Now he is attacking the haitian community, who has endured, that country has suffered from horrific, horrific incidents over the last several years and deserve none of this. It is a blatant lie, but what he does is he preys on the underserved. He preys on those who don't necessarily know our system the best. Don't speak english as well in some cases as the asian american community in my district and he will try to use them to stoke fear, division and hate among all americans. Solely so that he can win and try to stay out of jail. It is cynical politics beyond anything that we have ever seen. Let me ask you a question closer to home. A republican colleague of yours in the new york delegation. He is posting today, along these lines. You know, there it is. The picture supposedly of a haitian carrying a goose. What do you say to that? this is not just trump. You know, he is in the new york delegation. He is a colleague of yours. He is a colleague who advertises himself to be a moderate republican and what this kind of rhetoric exposes is that trump has completely taken over the republican party. We've seen it in the house this last congress. We saw it recently this week when trump said we should have a government shutdown if the democrats don't agree to a preposterous bill that the republicans want to put forward and what you are seeing are the true colors. They can pay lip service to being moderate as much as they like to, but they fall in line behind donald trump every single time and in this case they are using his lies, his slander, his bigotry, his racism, to try to win an election and josh riley, a fabulous democratic candidate in new york 19, is ready to serve the american people, not donald trump. And that is why it is so important that everyone gets out to vote in november. Congressman dan goldman of new york, thank you very much. Planning mass deportations, which say what you want about the bush administration, that is the opposite of the policy they put forth. He is planning to give europe to russia. He's offering nothing on policy and kamala harris has run a campaign over the past six weeks to do months that has root has moved to the middle and on national security issues she sounded like someone in the bipartisan consensus of the country about supporting allies and military. The only complaints i've heard about foreign policy have been from the left and her comments about israel. To me it is like, why is it only dick cheney and alberto gonzalez? it is also striking, the other thing that unites them, you know, sort of the throwback thursday aspect of this is that alberto gonzalez does not have a future in republican politics. He will do his thing. Karl rove is not going to be working in another white house. But you know, liz cheney basically to her great credit destroyed her future in republican politics in the maga era with her choices. The further you get away from future ambition when talking about dick cheney or dan quayle, the former vice president, the more honest people are like he is terrible and we are not going to vote for him. Yes and i don't want to be too hopeful or pollyannaish, but i wonder if we are seeing the semblance of a post from future that republicans are seeing after the second debate. If the first debate showed democrats that joe biden is not up to the job, the second debate showed the entire country, but especially republicans who otherwise have been willing to bend for trump, that this man, the emperor has no clothes, no plans, no ideas. He lies. The facts are crazy. It is almost as if, and this is reinforced by the fact he is surrounded by laura loomer and marjorie taylor greene is coming out against him and that association. He is almost losing this party that he built and has treated as a toy or an accessory for the last eight years to himself and now it is almost like they could see whether he loses the election or he is in prison or he flees the country because he wants to avoid that, they are almost seeing a potential future without him. It is interesting that you raise that because i do think if he loses this election day swell, i don't know. The thought i would be sitting in this desk covering the 2028 election with octogenarian donald trump as the candidate for the republican party makes me want to put my head through this glass desk. Don't even put that but i think, i wonder how much the calibration of whether he will win or not to vex these calibrations. Because what you saw a few months ago around the rnc and after biden's bad debate performance, it was a lot of coasting to victory and what cabinet position? a lot of sucking up to him. I think selfinterested people make decisions based a bit on how much they think the person is going to win. And as much as we think it is about great principal and it certainly is for liz cheney and adam kinzinger, but some of these other retired folks, it is about the hassle, honestly. Alberto gonzalez now is going to get emails from some of his friends who still want to work for trump or might really like trump and will be mad at him. I spoke to one of the 200 people on the list that you mentioned in the intro, the more prominent ones, and she said that she got a call from a former bush cabinet secretary, upgrading her for putting her name on the list. So it is kind of like if you thought trump was going to win anyway, why deal with the hassle? now you can see the momentum moving in harris's direction, like okay, i can handle a couple of nasty grams from the club if i can do the right thing and we think it will end up that way as well. Your point about the debate, you know, harris says she wants another debate. Trump equivocated today and came out with a typically all caps, deranged statement about how he is not going to do another debate. Some of the polling we have has harris up by five points. Others show different things. This will shake out over the the next week or two, but what you think about trump closing the door today on another debate after having kept it open for a while and kamala harris definitely being down? he is taking his ball and going home. He wants the great jesse waters, a renowned journalist, to be the host of the next debate that he wants to participate in. That would be a joke. Trump is taking his ball and going home because he knows he lost. He will not be embarrassed by a black woman again on national television and honestly the more trump puts himself out there, the more he loses. His polling goes down the more rallies he holds, the more speeches and press conferences he holds. The more debates he does, he does poorly. North carolina is a place identified early, first by the biden campaign and now the harris campaign as a real possibility to flip from red in 2020 to blue this november. Right now the polling there is absolutely neck and neck. The new york times shows harris up one point, effectively tied. In fact the new york times polling averages show a lot of tied races. All evenly matched. Harris holds a one point lead in michigan and three point lead in wisconsin. If past is prologue, many races should come down to narrow margins and victory could come down to just a few thousand extra votes. Joining me now is the man in charge of finding those votes, battleground states director for the harriswalz campaign. Dan, great to have you on. My first question is we always want to think that you have special data you get to see, so you can see the future and we can't and generally that is not the case, but i will ask if you have seen anything in data or anything in the world in those battleground states in reaction to the debate and the aftermath of the debate? it is a great question and there is no magic wall, unfortunately. We do look very carefully at the data we get from our own campaign and research, but the stuff i think is most interesting and instructive to me is the qualitative and quantitative data from our reports in the field. We have a big operation. More than 2000 staff, 300 offices across the battleground state of north carolina. 26 offices and we talk to voters at the doors. Tens of thousands on a given day. Millions of contacts every night across the battlegrounds and they tell us something qualitatively and quantitatively and a couple of things we know. They really care about project 2025, it comes up a ton. They care about reproductive freedom and rights, it comes up a ton and we here last night and today and at the rally anecdotally that what the vice president did last night in laying bare donald trump's ownership of the issue of destroying rights through roe v. Wade and her impassioned answer on what that means to women and families in this country, resonated and shook folks directly. We see that at the rallies and the result of that is today with tens of thousands of folks in charlotte and greensboro. 5000 new volunteer signups coming out of those events gives us more ammunition to talk to voters across the country. This is from nbc news reporting on the state of north carolina, that for months the biden team insisted north carolina was within reach. I've heard them say that, but biden struggled to overtake trump because of his struggle to motivate younger voters. Another harris campaign says it is seeing a rush of volunteers in the state especially young adults since harris became the nominee. More than 20,000 new volunteers have signed up. Officials said more than 2000 north carolinians signed up to volunteer. Almost a quarter of them students at campus watch parties. It does seem like the bullishness on north carolina is bearing out in the data, like it is clearly in the same category as the other swing states, right? i think it is, chris, and we thought it could be and should be the entire time. It was a 1. 3% margin for donald trump in 2020. That is 74,000 votes. The demographics are a little better since that race and when i was running the state in 2016 it was 3. 5%. So we cut that one cycle to the next and i think we have a chance to cut it here. The other part that is interesting is mark robinson and the extreme campaign. You mentioned laura loomer and trump hanging out with her at 9/11, which is pretty unbelievable, but mark robinson is another one. He literally thinks the world was better off before women could vote and he says that a lot. I think pairing that sentiment, which is clearly born of donald trump's politics in that state is something that works with voters and when you talk to voters you hear it all the time. It cuts through and the effort on the ground to make it real and connect those dots is what i think and when a close election. I have been a leader on ivf, which is fertilization. The ivf, i have been a leader. In fact when they got a very negative decision on ivf from the alabama courts, i saw the people of alabama and the legislature two days later voted it in. I've been a leader on it. They know that and everybody else knows it. I have been a leader on fertilization, ivf. A leader on fertilization. Donald trump has no idea what it stands for, but is trying to erase the history of how his actions put in vitro fertilization at risk in this country. Remember alabama's highest court ruled that frozen embryos or children, leading multiple clinics in the state to pause suddenly offering ivf for fear of breaking the law and the alabama court was only able to make that ruling, emboldened by the supreme court justices that trump appointed that overturned roe v. Wade. The state court cited the opinion. State lawmakers passed a world to undo the ruling because ivf is a widely used treatment, popular across the political spectrum, but now trump is trying to pretend he is some sort of savior, even though the dobbs decision opened the floodgates. He is promising to make ivf treatment free. That would take an act of congress, so democrats are wisely calling trump's bluff. Senate majority leader chuck schumer will force republicans to vote for a second time on a bill that protects access to ivf, a bill they blocked last time. I am joined by the lead sponsor of that bill, senator tammy duckworth, the first senator to give birth while serving in office. Both children were born with the help of ivf and she joins me now. Senator, you have been a crusader on this issue for a long time. Obviously very personal to you. I could call you a leader in fertilization if i had to. Don't tell my husband. It is a weird phrase, i think we can all agree. It is wild to watch this desperate attempt to pander that is at odds with what the republican party is actually doing. You have tried to pass multiple bills on ivf. What do the bills do and what has happened before? i tried a couple different bills. This one that we will vote on next week will do some simple things. It guarantees the right to access reproductive technology. If you want to see, it basically sets up a statutory right across the entire country, no matter where you live, that you have the right to access reproductive technology including ivf and if you are a doctor and want to provide it according to accepted medical standards, you can provide it. It doesn't mean you have to. If a catholic hospital does not want to provide it they don't have to, but if you want to provide it you have the statutory right and it allows insurance companies to cover ivf. There are two additional provisions. One is i think, i think we may have lost the senator. The internet gremlins. Oh dear. I am still here. We got you. So it is access ivf, but also covers the portion that allows military men and women to access ivf and also mandates the biggest employerprovided insurance plan in the world, the one for federal employees, it mandates it to cover ivf. It's a very simple. If they support ivf, vote for the bill. That sounds like a great bill. I would vote for it in the senate. Last time around you got to republican votes. Is that right? yes. Yes. Senators markowski and collins. Do you think you will get more than that this time? do you think donald trump will be out whipping for this? while he says he is a leader on fertilization. That he will bring us ivf. All he has to do is tell my republican colleagues, his republican minions in the senate to vote for it. He stopped the border bill by telling them, on the eve of the agreement to not vote for it and tank their own border bill. All you have to do is tell republicans to vote for this and they will vote for it and families can start the family's they want to start. Start. That is a great point. When that border bill came out of negotiations and it was announced, and it was probably anywhere between a dozen to about 20 republican senators that were going to vote for that, geeking out and killed it in 24 hours. Once he killed it, mitch mcconnell turned against it, john cornyn turned against it, they basically pulled their own bill. So, this is a challenge. You are right, if he is serious about this, with republicans to vote yes, they will listen to you, he should do it. He should do it! frankly, all the stuff he is saying now, he is like the bank robber, right? he has robbed the bank, he has stolen our reproductive rights, and now he wants to give get a reward because he knows who the thief is, it is him! [ laughter ] and i would like to say something also about this and i would like to hear your thoughts on this, something a little bit maddening, there is gaslighting going on and republicans are like, what are you talking about? we are not against idf, we love ivf! but, the people who set their sights on row don't like ivf, they want personhood amendment. There are four republican states that have personhood statutes, 17 others have debated similar legislation in recent years, all of which would arguably imperil ivf. This is from the political story today, hundreds of thousands of embryos, each one of them as fully human as you or me, this is their belief, are created and destroyed. This is the president of the action league. So, there are real people who hate ivf who want to see it made illegal who are in the republican party coalition and have a lot of influence. Texas right for life says if you want to do ivf, you have to implant i wanted to hear her, the rest of what the folks at texas right for life are saying, but i loved talking to senator tammy duckworth when the internet gremlins were not attacking. In springfield, they are eating the dogs, the people that came in, they are eating the cats, they are eating they are eating the pets of the people that lived there, and this is what is happening in our country, and it is a shame. I just want to clarify here, you bring up springfield, ohio, and abc news did reach out to the city manager there, he told us there have been no credible reports of specific claims of pets being harmed, injured, or abused by individuals within the immigrant community point well, i have seen people on television, the people on televisions said, my dog was taken and used for food. Maybe he said that, maybe that is a good thing to say for a city manager. But, the people on the television say the dog was eaten by the people that went there. Again, the springfield city manager says there is no evidence of that. We will find out. That moment in the debate got a lot attention. Not only does donald trump sound like a deranged maniac and what he is saying is a racist lie, an invented story, and one that he keeps repeating wherever he goes. The migrants are walking off with the towns geese, they are taking the keys. You know where the keys are, in the parks? and even walking off with their pets. My dog has been taken! this could only happen these people are the worst. Again, it is a horrible, racist, disgusting, even dangerous lie. Eventually, i fear, it is going to get people hurt. But, that lie, that lie he is repeating, the lie he said in the debate is intentionally sticking and resident. And when that is the case, we have this question of whether we should cover it or debunk it, because by doing so, you are directing more attention to the thing he wants attention on, which has been, truly, the paradox of the entire trump era. It is something we wrestle with every day. And i would even say that feeling, that feeling of having our attention compelled by something we don't want to put it on is the defining experience of our entire lives in this era, in the 21st century. Whether it is trump renting, or the little casino style attention machines we carry in our pockets that peanuts with notifications day and night, it is also what i have spent the last three years thinking about and researching. And in fact, i wrote a book about it. The book is called the sirens' call: how attention became the world's most dangerous resource. It is about how attention became the most dangerous resource of our time and how the constant extraction of attention from us is driving us all a bit insane. Producing a widespread experience of deep spread alienation, warping the shape of both democratic debate and public life, like immigrant lies, and the most intimate parts of our inner lives. I mean, attention, what we pay attention to, is the substance of life, and we live in an era in which the world's most powerful forces and corporations are trying to take it from us, in every last instant. The book is going to be released in january of next year, but it is now available
