On this hour of ayman, more and more republicans want trump to lose the election to get their party back, but is it that simple? and a quest for accountability after an american activist was shot to death in the occupied west bank. Why her family is rejecting a proposal from the biden administration. And we have a doozy for the worst of the week matchup. It is holocaust revisionism versus hypocrisy and my panel is here to help me get through it. Let's do it. We begin this hour with a tale of two gop factions fighting over the future of their party. In one corner it is republicans who publicly want trump gone. In the other corner, republicans too cowardly to admit it. Let's start with former republican vice president dick cheney who made shockwaves this week when he announced he would vote for vice president kamala harris over donald trump. Cheney justified his support saying in our nations history there has never been an individual who is a greater threat to our republic than donald trump. He can never be trusted with power again. Cheney of course joins the ranks of notable republicans who vowed to support harris like his daughter liz cheney and former congressman adam kinzinger. You think headlines like these would rattle trump, but let's be real. Republicans who dare speak out against trump have already been ostracized from the party. That is why moderate republicans are privately hoping that trump loses and loses big. According to politico, some of the republicans wishing for a trump loss include longstanding gop figures throughout the nation who bleed red and would not dare to say this publicly, but who are more than willing to move on from the trump era. A conservative lawmaker told politico there is a lot of anxiety about what trump does to the ability to win and what he may do to the party in terms of policy, longterm. So jonathan martin who spoke with republicans floats another option making the rounds. Speed up the expresident's departure with a trump win so he could only serve one more term and be done for certain in 2028. Now there are a few problems with this hopeful, if not delusional way of thinking. First of he loses there is nothing to suggest that he does not run again in 2028 with the support of his massive maga base. Secondly this is the crux of it. Even if he wins and term limits determine he step aside for years from now, you can simply move on from the version of the party that he transformed in his image. Something that has taken years to do. Turning the page on the arrow requires more than trump failing to get an electoral vote majority. If you turn the page on trump the man, but turning the page on the energy trump leveraged is tricky. With me now my panel for the hour, jayson stanley, professor at yale university and author of the book, erasing history, how fascist to rewrite the past to control the future. And also michelle gold merges with us. She is an msnbc political analyst. You have written extensively about fascism and how it does not go away easily. Some have argued we are on the cusp of fascism in america with the potential reelection of donald trump and one of the problems with the logic we are outlining. Assuming he wins, is based on the fact you would think after four years he leaves. When he has given every indication that this is going to be the last election for president in this country if he wins. That's right and so this whole for certain gone by 2028 is absurd. When i am in ukraine, ukrainians tell me it is not just putin, it is the russian people. I feel something similar here. It is not just trump, it is the republican party. The republican party has an authoritarianism problem. There are politicians in the republican party who have now seen that you can transform america into an autocracy and they may be the ones to do it. That is why they attack loading. They say america is not a democracy. Part of the problem is when people think of dictators they think of north korea or iraq, but there are hybrid dictatorships that have emerged that we have learned from. Places like turkey, hungary, and that can be more of what american dictatorship or american authoritarianism under trump looks like. Certainly and the gop loves viktor orban and hungary. They bite him to events and celebrate him. Let's step back. The gop is so far afield they have lost dick cheney. He goes this is too much for me. I did a lot of bad stuff, but this guy i can't do this. Fabricating weapons of mass destruction and invading countries illegally, that i will do. But this guy is a bridge too far. That should wake up everyone. We know the reality. It does not matter if trump goes or wins or loses. He will leave the party. 90% of republicans are supporting donald trump. These guys are outliers. The gop should rename itself. We have other major parties. The know nothing party had elected officials. They are gone. Trump should change it to the trump party, trademark the name and have to pay him royalties every time we say it. He loves that and he is probably working on it as we speak. 's party means nothing. It is his whim that day. Abortion, i am for it, i am against it. It doesn't matter. We have never had a party like this in the modern era. It is an autocratic and fascist party. How can republicans move away from trump, when dean was saying that trumpism is so infused in the party, with their culture, that it is impossible to separate the two? there is no republican party beyond trump. So i am not quite as convinced that if donald trump loses in 2024 he is going to be the candidate in 2028. I do think there is a moment at which a desperation to win sets in. Whether it is a majority of the party, i don't think we can say, but i do think the party would be transformed by a loss against the candidate that they regard as really weak and eminently beatable. My guess is that it is not as if they are going to moderate. I think that among activists in the republican party it is around abortion. Trump is showing that the religious right, although religious fundamentalists are very much behind him, the erstwhile leaders of the religious right to are very unhappy with his shifting language on abortion, they are threatening to withhold their vote or saying there will be a problem with energy and turnout. I don't necessarily think that is true and i think he is revealing that they don't have the kind of hold on the voters that maybe they thought they did. That said, if trump loses i think they will have an incentive to spin it as, he did not motivate the base and from now on we need candidates who double down on the party commitment to banning abortion. I think michelle is making a very smart, nuanced argument about the republican party. My only issue with that is i think there is probably a lot of cowards in the republican party who are not willing to stand up to trump now. The policy will not be the reason they suddenly find strength. You lost a few times, now i will rustle this party out of your control. Right. Fear is governing the republican party. Fear is the tonic of authoritarianism. It is a party based on patronage, on loyalty, on punishment. That is the situation we have now. So it is going to take some kind of change in the culture of the republican party to stand up to this phenomenon. Rather than the other alternative that some other person comes and rolls and eventually end replaces trump with the same culture of fear and intimidation. Donald trump jr. ? right. When you think about that, though, joking aside from moment, the role that he has assumed within the party, if you will. The decision making. He was a huge advocate for j. D. Vance to get the vice presidential nod. Trump's daughterinlaw is now heading the rnc. The nepotism, again the co opting of the republican party. You see this in middle eastern dictatorships where the heir apparent emerges and takes over. It is now happening in america slowly. Given that trump has been president, anything is possible. So we have a system, we have a party that is entirely designed around one person. And of course the situation with that kind of authoritarian structure is what happens when that person goes? it is not like a democracy where you have a solution to that. So presumably some other person will emerge to play that role and if that does not work there will be some kind of anarchy. That is why you have democracy to avoid that problem. Potentially of trump loses you are arguing that he would be cast aside. Some republicans would say you are not winning, you have been losing several times, but would that mean that the next iteration, whether it be j. D. Vance or ron desantis or certainly don junior, or maybe a hardcore trumpist would emerge as the heir apparent? i think of we have to guess if donald trump loses i think, i think that it will be another species of authoritarian. Probably one in his christian nationalism who is more hard line on abortion. That is one place where there is tension in the party. Donald trump has such a charismatic cold on the voters. He can get away with deviations from the ideology of the most stalwart activists and i think that will be the scapegoat if he loses. There is this school of thought that has argued the election of a history making candidate, barack obama, the first black president gave us trumpism. Certainly revealed it and gave him the momentum to get to the white house. If vice president kamala harris wins the presidency and becomes again a history making president as the first woman, that would also unleash a very dark chapter in america. We see him calling her a dei higher now. This gop is not about policy and everyone on the panel knows it. This is about taking it back to a time before the voting rights act where white power controlled and it was unchallenged. This is not one policy versus another. It is do you want to go back to the time of white power unchallenged or be a multiracial democracy going forward? that is the option. The policy on child care they are not meaningful for most of us. They live in the real world. This election decides the future. Are we going truly backwards to trump, for the right, or are we going forward to a country that is multiracial democracy? please stick around. We have more to get to. Ukraine is the enemy of this country. Ukraine is our enemy, being funded by the democrats. I will stress again, one of the greatest enemies of our nation right now is ukraine. That was tim poole, a conservative influencer who has someone. 3 million subscribers on youtube and what you heard right there sounds a lot like russian propaganda and it turns out according to u. S. Prosecutors he was duped into being a kremlin mouthpiece. A bombshell indictment alleged that a media company linked to conservative influencers including pool was funded by state media employees to turn out englishlanguage videos. The indictment accuses russia today workers of laundering nearly $10 million to directly fund an unnamed tennesseebased online content creation company. Under the direction of those russian operatives, that company identified as tenant media took the money and commissioned people like pool to make videos like the one we showed you. Paying up to $100,000 per video. According to the indictment, creators were paid to make videos with subject matter that was consistent with amplifying u. S. Domestic divisions and aimed at weakening opposition to russian objectives like the war in ukraine. Joining me now to discuss this is author of messing with the enemy, surviving in a world of akers, terrace, russians and fake news. Great to see you again. We should note the influencers say they were unaware of the motivations of the company that was paying them, but the supposedly covert operation if you will to get influencers to pedal russian propaganda was thinly veiled. What does it say that russia was so brazen that they did not need this covert operation? they were like let's pay these influencers as much as we can to tell them to say what we want them to say? that's exactly right. Eight years ago they could pose as americans on social media. Today they can't do that and we have seen that with my team in several ways. They know they need to get into the u. S. Audience base. Now how do they do it? rt has been sanctioned and blocked in many western countries. They use cash and try to hire people that look like and talk like the target audience and that video was classic. The lines they were reading was exactly what you would hear if you were listening to vladimir putin talk on any given day and what is important about this as well is really three parts. It showed that russia today, which everyone thought had been sanctioned and pushed offline after the russians invaded ukraine, is still up to a lot of activity and a lot of covert activity, which goes to the second part. We talked about an fsb officer, the group that vladimir putin work for, setting up a cyber activist group that posed as if it was doing cyber attacks, but really was trying to scare audiences. And then a third part known as doppelganger which mimics news outlets. Whatever it might be around the world, they take fake stories and put real logos on it and shoot it across social media. A sweeping set of indictments and remarkable to seal for the government is come in the last decade. It is remarkable when you think of how the matrix is changing. What has not changed is this clear intent by russia to meddle in our affairs. That is i think indisputable at this point for anyone following the story closely. After the indictment came down putin could not help himself. We will talk about it afterwards, but watch this. If we can name a favorite candidate. It used to be joe biden, but now he is not participating in the election campaign and he commanded all his allies to support harris, so that is what we are going to do. He also went on to make it sound like donald trump was really tough on russia and his preference obviously as he said was he wanted vice president harris to win the election. Because donald trump was too harsh on vladimir putin. Your response to this endorsement and what it says? he attributes of spies is denial. It is all about pushing in one direction when you are actually going another. Anytime you here vladimir putin sang another country is doing something, usually means he is up to it. Anytime he says he is interested in one thing, he is usually interested in another. We saw that with the invasion of ukraine. What is remarkable is the intent is constant in 2016, 2020, 2024, there is one constant tent that was ukraine. 2016 was about ukraine and changing the agenda at the rnc through active measures. The force of politics rather than the politics of force. Why you saw this effort to hire influencers was video. If there is any shift over the last decade, no one reads tweets or looks at facebook posts now and gets duped in the same way and most people are consuming information in a video format on all social media platforms. What you do if you are a russian troll farm? you have to hire somebody to do it or you make preposterous videos, which they are also doing. They've come up with crazy schemes from another group we watch and they are not landing in the same way. Hats off to the u. S. Government for what they did this round and let's hope they keep it up through election day. We have 45 seconds left. Other attempts to sway the election not just from russia. We know that iran is as well. How are their capabilities different than russia and can the u. S. Government, you know, be suitably prepared for the iranian threat? a big change in this cycle is a busy lee likely cycle is equally likely to be russia or iran. If there is an interference effort in the election on voting day. The reason is they are smaller, but they are much more aggressive and they use what we would say cyber attacks and influence activity on social media, part and parcel. The way we have seen the russians do, but not over a cycle the way we see the russians on social media. We should be very careful if we see one of these schemes pop up. A 5050 chance it is iran or russia and it could be either one and they are pursuing similar objectives in some cases and different policies and candidates and others. Overlapping interests and we have not even mentioned china who certainly has strong technical capabilities. Clint watts, thank you, it is great to get your insights. According to the group she was volunteering with, the israeli army intentionally shot and killed her. Sources say she was shot in the head by israeli forces who opened fire. The biden administration said it was disturbed and contacted the israeli government to investigate. This is a pattern we have seen over the past 11 months. Israel is accused of atrocities, the u. S. In a statement they said given the circumstances, and israeli investigation is not adequate and called on the biden administration to order an independent probe. The u. N. Aysenur eygi was actively involved in propalestinian campus protests at her school, the university of washington, and was described by her family as a passionate civil rights activist and a staunch advocate of justice. And activist and close friend of aysenur eygi has an intimate knowledge of her activists he advocacy. She joins us now. This must be a difficult time for you and friends and family of aysenur, but tell us what kind of person she was and more importantly how you learned about her death. How to describe aysenur? that is always such a really good question. There are so many, i think, beautiful ways to describe her. Kindest people. One of the best organizers i have ever met. The family statement said it best. She wore her heart on her sleeves. She is a loving person. She always thought to ask how you were doing. Wanted to take care of others. And i don't know, there is just no better way to describe her than how her family has beautifully and eloquently stated in their statement. Maybe in too many words. Go ahead. I was going to ask, do you know how much information her family is receiving from the u. S. Government at this moment and whether or not they are receiving adequate information? so i can't speak for the family, but i do know they are in contact with the consulate in jerusalem. Let's talk about her activism, aysenur's activism. You said she wore her heart on her sleeve. Her presence and spirit was felt as an organizer on the campus at the university of washington where you were students together. Was she an experienced activist? did she know the risks of traveling to the occupied west bank and if she did, what motivated hurst motivated her to still go there? she had a long history of activism. My experience with her was she was really considerate in how she organized and was able to call people in and help them grow and be better organizers themselves. That was really important. When it comes to risk, i think the better point is that there is only risk in the west bank because of the israeli military. She was standing firm in a very long tradition of peaceful foreign observers volunteering in the west bank. Protesting against illegal israeli settlements and the israeli military and so that is where the risk lies. It lies with israel. It lies with the violence that they pursue in the west bank and in gaza. You told the new york times that aysenur would've wanted to emphasize that her death was only one of many stemming from the israelipalestinian conflict. You said that at your university encampment she, quote, was always reminding us that this was the palestinian story. What do you think she would have wanted the world and the u. S. To know about what and why she was there on the ground? yeah, i think it is important that she was there to be a propalestine activist. And yes, she stood firm in her beliefs, but i, today, want to talk about who she was as a person and who we lost. We lost an american who was a staunch human rights activist. An american who wanted the best for our communities, marginalized here and abroad, who stood in solidarity with many different groups and organized in many different ways to ensure that all marginalized people could be liberated and that is what i want to talk about, the person she was. The beautiful human and who we lost. Unfortunately she can't tell us, at this time, what she would have wanted them to know. I know what the family and i want. The family and i want the u. S. To lead an investigation. We can't put faith into just having the u. S. Call on israel to investigate themselves. I think the family said it best in their statement when they called on president biden and vice president harris and secretary of state blinken to order an independent investigation into this unlawful killing and to ensure that full accountability is found for the guilty parties and that is what we are looking for right now. First to tucker who hosted a guest on his show to educate us about the holocaust. His conclusion was that the chief villain of world war ii was uk prime minister winston churchill for being primarily responsible for that war becoming what it did. Primarily responsible. I think he is forgetting someone. According to tucker's favorite historian, millions of people ended up dead in concentration camps, downplaying the systemic and ruthless manner in which nazi germany slaughtered 6 million. Up next mark robinson. Prior to this week robinson was probably best known for his homophobic views, holocaust denials and open calls for political violence. Now another chapter of his biography has been revealed. According to a local pornography storeowner, mark robinson was a loyal customer, extremely loyal, coming in as often as five nights a week to watch in a private booth in the 1990s and early 2000's. The campaign denied the report, but this is a man who says he was saved by the evangelical church, committing his life to jesus in the 1980s, before he reportedly frequented the shops. A man who has weaponized the word pornography to describe everything from music to network television to children's books. My panel is back with me and before we get to everyone's pick, there is a lot we have to unpack. Jason, what did you make of tucker platforming somebody like darrell cooper and pushing the boundaries of the conversation around holocaust denial and the kind of, i don't know, the retelling of you will of world war ii and doing it under this fake umbrella that this is freedom of speech and we should be able to challenge these ideas and debate them. Seven of my great uncles were murdered and migrate grandmother as well. Both of my parents are refugees from nazi germany and poland, so this is a bit personal to me, but it was absolutely inevitable that this was going to happen. We have the ideological structure that is central to the gop right now. We've got great replacement theory. That the dominant group is being replaced. The globalists are the agents. Those globalists for hitler were the jews. The gop doesn't mention the jewish people explicitly, but it is inevitable that the implicit becomes explicit. So you had this antisemitic framing. Of course they will then say, look, who else had this ideology? then they will try to whitewash that. So i've got to ask about the reaction to this, because of course tucker carlson was surprisingly blasted by some conservatives on social media. J. D. Vance as i suggested said we should be able to have a challenging debate. J. D. Vance will be joining him for a live event later this month in pennsylvania. That is tucker carlson, not darrell cooper. Who knows, he might make an appearance, but right now it is tucker carlson. Of tucker carlson had a bigger platform like fox news he would be mainstreaming this the same way he mainstreamed the great replacement theory. On my show i called him tucker clansman for years because he really is a white supremacist. He is out and sharing it. J. D. Vance doesn't have a problem with it because j. D. Vance understands the only way the gop can win is bring in neo nazis, white supremacist, all the people on the outskirts of society that donald trump brought back in. Literally fabricating tweets years ago saying i was involved in terrorism because i wrote an article talking about how donald trump refused to denounce white supremacy and i sued them for defamation. I won $4 million. I am flush with nazi money. No, they have no money. Why are you doing this show if you have $4 million? i don't have money. The point is we will not be silenced by these bigots who are to this day still bringing it to the mainstream and that is what is going on. Michelle, i want to get your thoughts. Tucker carlson is someone sitting in the box at the rnc. This is not a fringe voice on the outskirts of republican or conservative media outlets. His voice matters. It is safe to say that he consults with, talks to the upper echelon of the republican party and here he is peddling this kind of nazi revisionism. I want to say two things. Although he no longer has a show on fox, he still has an enormous platform. One of the most popular podcasts in the united states. As you said, j. D. Vance will be a guest on this tour and i believe a week after that, donald trump junior is going to be a guest, so he is someone very plugged in to the highest levels of the republican party and i think it is important to understand that when he tries to whitewash or minimize the holocaust or the moral depravity of ism, it is not just about rewriting the past, it is about changing what is thinkable in the present and they both talk a lot during this interview about i think it is true. It structures american society. You know it is one of the things one of the shared assumptions, or until recently was one of the shared assumptions undergirding most liberal democracies and the reason they want to erode that shared assumption is so that kind of fascism no longer becomes unthinkable. If you can no longer say that is the ultimate example of evil, then donald trump's planned building network of detention camps for undocumented immigrants becomes more thinkable. Let me ask you real quickly, michelle. Mark robinson, the issue is the hypocrisy. Supposedly an evangelical christian who is running a childcare center with his wife around the same time he was allegedly visiting these video stores. What do you make of that hypocrisy from him? so to be honest i don't care about mark robinson's porn consumption. I do think that his history of antisemitism and holocaust minimization is really important and goes to show the utter bad faith of the republican party that has the audacity to present that because democrats are concerned with the death toll in gaza, that that makes them anti semites, when they have running for governor of north carolina somebody who has said things that are unabashedly anti semitic.
