tonight wherever you get your podcast. now it's time for the last word. with it and i would like to consider myself somewhat a person that can follow logic but i was listening to that sound bite from donald trump about the shock and the electrocution and i just literally tried to follow and could not make sense. >> you can't follow it because it makes no sense. none of it makes any sense, but that is the point, isn't it? the more you speak in senseless nonsense, the more people come to expect senseless nonsense from you and that then lowers the bar to the ground. >> then everyone just ignores it and moves on and i think that is the scary thing that this guy could one day be president again, making no sense. great to see you. enjoy the rest of your evening off. >> have a good show. >> thank you so t bmuch. today's decision will have deadly consequences. that is what supreme court justice sonia sotomayor said about the ruling by her conservative colleagues rejecting a trumpeter a ban on bump stocks. in the 6-3 decision, the conservative justices have single-handedly overturned one of the few measures to help stem gun violence in this country and there are not that many. donald trump's administrationck actually band bump stocks after gunmen used them to open fire at a country music festival in las vegas in 2017, killing nearly 60 people and injuring 500 more in the single deadliest mass shooting in this country's history. the trumpeter a policy made it illegal to possess bump stocks using the same federal laws that prohibitsi machine guns bu justice clarence thomas played with more scandal after news of more undisclosed luxury trips from his billionaire benefactor. somehow, e trtwisted logic in h interpretation that a firearm equipped with a bump stock which allows a semiautomatic rifle to fire with the speed of a fully automatic weapon does not meet the definition of machine gun under federal law. this is what he wrote. >> we hold that a semiautomatic rifle equipped with a bump stock is not a machine gun because it cannot fire more than one shot by a single function of the trigger. now, i want to take a minute here to remind everyone what the deadliest massacre in american history sounded like. that is what a semiautomatic rifle made more deadly as a weapon by bump stocks sounds like. you don't have to be a weapons expert to figure that out, but clarence thomas and other extremist on the court don't think that qualifies as a machine gun. justice sonia sotomayor issued a blistering dissent the string with incredulity writing in part but, today, the court puts bump stocks back in civilian hands. to do so, it cast aside congress's definition of machine gun.he when i see a bird that walks like a duck, swims like a duck and quacks like a duck, i call that bird a duck. a bump stock-equipped semiautomatic rifle fires automatically more than one shot without manual reloading by a single function of the trigger. because i, like congress, call that a machine gun, i dissent. donald trump's campaign issued a statement reminding voters that he supports the second amendment and is endorsed by the nra. that doesn't sound like a guy who is very upset with how the supreme court ruled today. instead, the biden-harris campaign blamed trumps justices in a statement that makes clear they no longer see the conservative majority on the supreme court as anything other than an arm of donald trump's republican party and its maga agenda. weapons of war have no place on the streets of america, but trumps justices have decided the gun lobby is more important than the safety of our kids and ur communities. donald trump, through his words, his actions, and his supreme court nominees, makes it clear every day that he doesn't care if the american people live or die at the hands of weapons of war on our treets.do trump only cares about the safety, security and freedom of one person, donald trump. it is telling who called on congress to band bump stocks after the court's ruling today. president biden, vice president harrison democratic leaders did. do you know who did not? donald trump, and neither did the republican sycophants who rallied around him during his return, his first return to capitol hill since he incited an insurrection on january 6. trumps justices are also helping donald trump avoid accountabilityo re for january delaying their decision on his claim that he has absolute immunity from prosecution for his efforts to steal the 2020 presidential election. my first guesstimate, democratic congressman jamie raskin recently reminded voters that supreme court is also on the ballot,ai by posting this. justice alito turned the flag upside down. donald trump turned the bible upside down. maggie turned the capital upside down. the roberts court turned the constitution uptight -- upside down. let's set america right side up in november. joining me now is democratic congressman jamie raskin of macon. he is a constitutional law professor who served on the january 6 committee and his elite impeachment manager in the second impeachment trial of donald trump. it's great to see you, as always. your assessment of the truck ar justices opinion this morning? >> well, it was outrageous, of course. it was not just justice sotomayor who said that this bird clock like a duck and walks like a duck. it was the bureau of alcohol, tobacco and firearms, and so it was the governing agency which said that wotik a semiautomatic weapon equipped with a bump stock operates exactly like a machine gun and should be treated that way, and of course, it was in the wake of that las vegas massacre where 58 people were destroyed, and more than 500 wounded.d e fundamentally altering the lives of hundreds of people, and snuffing out the lives of 58 of them. trump, at that point, pretended at least to support that action as a substitute for universal violent criminal background check in for a complete ban on military style assault weapons, and now they get -- the justices he brags about implanted on the court to overturn roe versus wade also strike this regulation down, and they're not going to o do anything about it, so the flag of america they fly upside down. the flag of the nra, they fly right side up and they fly at very high, way above the rule of law, way above the constitution and the public safety of the people. >> one of the important things in today's ruling is the terminology here, and in her dissent, justice sotomayor noted and points out that every member of the majority has previously emphasized that the best way to respect congressional intent is to adhere to the ordinary understanding of the terms congress uses, and today, the majority forgets that principal and actually substitutes his own view of what constitutes a machine gun for congress. she cites each justice, and it seems like the supreme court here is trying to get off on a technicality of what the definition of a machine gun and when congress made absolutely clear what it is.f doesn't seem like these justices are making arbitrary decisions based on whether they like the law or not? >> well, the majority was splitting hairs in the interest of the nra and the hair that they split was to say that l, whereas a machine gun operates with one flip of the trigger, when you equip the semiautomatic with a bump stock, you have to maintain some backward pressure on the trigger. of course, the ats and the justices dissenting and any common sense interpretation that gun is u operating functionally, just like a machine gun, and destroys life with the efficacy and rapidity of a machine gun, as you pointed out in the beginning, and that is why we have the rule against machine guns. my right wing maga colleagues don't agree with that. they don't think there should be a rule against machine guns or tanks or any weapons. they think all of those are n'h arms under the second amendment, and their argument is that the second amendment gives you the right to overthrow the government despite the fact thatto there a half a dozen different provisions in the constitution specifically for closing and opposing insurrection, including section 3 of the 14th amendment, which says that if you've ever sworn an oath to support the constitution and you violated by engaging in insurrection or rebellion, you should never be allowed to hold federal or state office again. but, that's just one of many. you can look at article one, section 8 which says congress has the responsibility to call forth the militias of the states in order to assist press insurrections and yet the whole argument you hear from matt gaetz and jim jordan and chip roy and marjorie taylor greene all of them is that the second amendment is about giving the people the right to engage in a violent insurrection or rebellion against our own government.ma >> of course, the other big news this week is the news we actually did not hear. no immunity decision today, the supreme court once again delaying trump being held accountable for january 6. it seems like we're not going to find out that decisionth, perha maybe in the next couple of weeks but certainly we did not find it out this week. aren't voters entitled to a trial before this election? >> well, we are not constitutionally entitled to a trial before the election, but the trial itself should have gone on unimpeded without the supreme court's intervention on the most ludicrous proposition that trump has advanced, which is that a former president of the united states is immune to scale criminal prosecution because is a former president, and that is specifically debunked by the text of the constitution itself, which says that if you are impeached and convicted, even in that case you can still be criminally prosecuted, but everybody has assumed in advance the idea that of course you can be prosecuted. when i took the house impeachment over to the senate in the second impeachment of donald trump, even trump's lawyers were saying look, you don't need to impeach him. you don't need to convict him. you don't need to try and convict him because he can be properly prosecuted like any other citizen can be. that was the whole essence of their argument in the second impeachment trial. now they want to take all that back and say no, of course you can'tcee eyo, prosecute a forme president, even if he engages in assassination. trump's lawyer was saying in the d.c.'s circuit yeah, he's amusing -- immune even from prosecution in assassination unless you can first impeach and convict him which gives them enough incentive just to kill off enough members of the opposition party. >> outlandish and i have to say, i think your post is perhaps the perfect distillation of what has been happening in this country, everything been turned upside down, and their chance of correcting it and turning it right side up as this november. thank you so much for joining us this evening.id joining me now, former democratic member of the house of representatives,ic debbie powell of florida running to replace rick scott in the u.s. senate. great to see you again. talk to me about why the senate is so important when it comes to the courts and we are seeing were played out today with the supreme court? >> we are seeing the results of those trump appointees and really rejecting s the court's opinion of the public. we know the majority of americans support, sense laws. this is actually an executive order that was passed under former president trump if yous remember and that is why executive orders really don't stand and that's why it is important to make sure at this point that congress acts and protects the safety of our children, protects public safety for our communities m li congressman raskin just mentioned. they are siding with the gun lobby and not doing what they need to do to protect their children's lives. that is very important, obviously, to be in the senate and make sure we keep the majority of the senate here in november,sk and the senate majority is going to run through florida.s we know we need to pick up a seat. rick scott is the most vulnerable republican we have. pulling a showing we are statistically tied at this point, but this man is someone who lies to floridians, is trying to lie his record away and he is actually right now, as we are talking about senate appointments for the judiciary, what he is doing is blocking some very significant appointments right now f in retaliation because he doesn't agree with the conviction of the former president. he is the poster child of extremism and one of the most radical members we have right now in the senate. >> it seems also like his gas lighting us. he put out an ad today vowing to protect ivf one day after he voted against protecting it. it feels like a little bit of gas lighting because any other case of believe what they do, not what they say. is there any doubt that he would just follow along with whatever trump wanted, including confirming any and all of trump's judicial nominees and not be an independent thinker? how do you cover that so when people in america see it they're not laughing at it and just dismissing it like an old man has gone senile, but the man who wants to have the codes to the nuclear weapons? >> one thing is we have to start adding headlines that reflect reality. instead of saying things like trump talks about not taxing tips in las vegas, i think the lead, the real headline for that day's former commander-in- chief goes on mystifying rants about dying from sharks and electrocution. what happens, i think, often in the media, is that we all go through trumps speeches and it's like a big bag of refrigerator magnets, you know, that little game of words, you know, and we kind of pick out the ones that make sense and then stick them back up so they actually make sense in some way. this is the problem with covering trump in excerpts rather than just turning on the camera, showing people and letting him rip. even with that whole shark digression, a lot of the printed excerpts from it, including mine because you know, you just run out of space, only had little bits from it, and i think you need to put it out there in a full paragraph and say look, just read this and tell me if this is a person who ought to have controlled nuclear weapons. this is a person who probably should not have control, you know, of car keys. we just don't do that. i mean, i think it is that normalcy bias. well, this is the republican nominee. he obviously can't be that unhinged so we have to find the one negative policy he might have accidentally tripped over while he was talking to cover that somehow i think that is a disservice to the public. >> what you think trump gets away with this? she lost the election and still gets a pass with behavior that is literally unthinkable for everyone else. >> and to follow up on tom, it is not just what he says, but he gets caught in these cul-de- sacs of speaking. he has aphasia, he can't find a word or he makes up a word or he just says sounds to cover for his brain freeze. he is clearly unwell, and i think he gets away with it for a few reasons. one is what tom just said, that the mainstream media has this normalcy bias and has this compulsion to present him as a normal candidate, just another choice. joe biden has certain deficits. trump has certain deficits. it's just a normal election, you say. the other way he gets away with it, of course, is that he has a whole call -- cults party behind him that covers for him, that says that he sounds sane. when he went behind closed doors and made the comment that milwaukee is a horrible city, mike johnson, the speaker of the house, was asked about it and he said oh, i was sitting next to him. i didn't hear anything. that's a lie. of course he heard it. so, he has an entire party that marches behind him and synchronization of dave griek -- they have created this right- wing media bubble that dreams of false narratives and false pictures we just had this week we just have the new york post and other media outlets trying to portray the president as wandering around the g-7 when in fact, he was going out to cheer on some parachute jumpers, and so i think all these things combined to give us the sense that he was just another guy. he was very amusing. look at all these people who come out to cheer him, so i think it's very dangerous and he is clearly disturbed. he has a broken brain. he cannot complete a thought and it's not only that he says bizarre things, but he's incoherent. >> yet, to jennifer's point, tom, it is astonishing that republicans who had a clear out from trump on january 20th, 2021, they did not need to bring him back into the party, somehow resurrected him and no more than mitch mcconnell and we saw that this week. why? >> because that is the easy way, because trump has a built- in number of votes and a base and an infrastructure, and rather than actually be responsible and patriotic members of a party who are going to win an election based on policies and positions in making arguments, they said you know, this guy has colt and it works for us and you know, that is just easier, and why bother doing all this other heavy lifting when we can just walk out and talk about space lasers and venezuelan voting machines and all these crazy things and just vacuum the pockets of credulous people who will always respond to these appeals. you would think that after trump has lost so many times and cost them so much, over time, that they might not want to go this road, this kind of lazy, irresponsible and distinctly un-american road, but it's easy and also, you always have to remember how afraid republican elected officials are of their own voters. they're terrified of them. they're terrified that if they cross trump and push him out of the way that offramp was not as easy as it looks. they could've pushed him out of the way but there would've been some blowback and they are cowards. they didn't want to risk it, so they took the easy road. >> tom nichols, jennifer rubin, always a pleasure. coming up, alex jones has been ordered to pay $1.5 billion for lying about the children murdered at sandy hook elementary school. today, the cell's got some justice as a judge ordered his assets to be liquidated and sold. that is next. sold. that is next. you. for the acute treatment of migraine with or without aura and the preventive treatment of episodic migraine in adults. don't take if allergic to nurtec odt. allergic reactions can occur, even days after using. most common side effects were nausea, indigestion, and stomach pain. it's time we all shine. talk to a healthcare provider about nurtec odt from pfizer. ♪♪ chevy trucks' advanced camera technology lets you see over, under, through, down, and any other direction you may need. ♪♪ up to eight available cameras and fourteen views. ♪♪ so you can focus on the view that really matters. don't miss a thing. chevy's got you. chevrolet. together let's drive. missing out on the things you love because of asthma? ultimately ruled that the case would be dismissed because it had been in bankruptcy court for two years. they could not achieve a settlement agreement. no one could get together and come up with anything that was palatable to all the families and jones, and so basically, that is the purpose for a bankruptcy case, so they could not arrange a settlement, there had to be something decided. would january quote, republican state representative richard holdsworth, a candidate for colorado's fourth congressional district, disclosed friday that he financed an abortion from one of his two girlfriends that he impregnated. i respected her rights and give her money to help her through her important critical time so she could live her best life, he said. i respected her rights. what about the rights of women who are not impregnated by him? he was asked about that in a truly excellent 47 minute interview this week by kyle clark of denver's nbc affiliate k usa and in answering clark's questions, he showed his mastery of three different trunk traits. deflection, projection, and of course, hypocrisy. >> if abortion was the best choice for your girlfriend, why try to deny that choice to other women? >> so, let me give you some context about that situation because i am a pro-life catholic and i believe everyone should choose life. if you listen to my presentation on the house floor -- did you listen to it? what was the major theme and what did i repeat probably 20 times? let me help you. >> in fairness, your logic was a bit scattered in that speech. what i'm asking you about is the fact that you said you respected your girlfriend's right to an abortion then gave her money -- >> i want to jump into the excellent interrogation by that journalist, kyle clark, and what he is doing here to reiterate what holtorf just said. quote, you did exactly what i did. you deflected. that is a bold choice to flat out admit you are not answering the question. remember, deflection, projection and hypocrisy. >> why is abortion good for your girlfriend, bad for other women? that's my question. simple question. >> okay, so you deflected and you did a good job of it, by the way. so, the major theme of that presentation, if you listen to it i want you to listen to it again, choose life. 20 times. i said choose life. now, there are times when that choice can't be made, or it's complicated, particularly for the woman, okay, and i understand that. >> quote, there are times when that choice can't be made or it's complicated. particularly for the woman, and i understand that. this is a trump republican who has voted against abortion rights before, and he will do it again if you can. you may think we just watch the political conversion in real time but no. keep watching as richard holtorf seems to argue for reproductive rights but concludes there's nothing wrong with him legislating those rights away from women. >> i'm a pro-life person. i think you should try to choose life every time but there are exceptions and there are times when you need abortion. abortion is a medical procedure. >> is one of the exceptions when richard holtorf is the father? >> no, it's not about me. don't personalize it, make it about me. >> you told the story on the house floor. >> that doesn't matter. that's not that important. what is more important is the policy. >> i mean, it was her life and her story. and you shared it. >> that's it and it's her life and it's her life and it was her choice. not my choice. it wasn't my choice. it was her choice. >> and as we've established, you've sought to legislate that choice away from other women that that's the thing i was asking you to grapple with. >> deflection, projection, hypocrisy. it's not just donald trump or the republicans on capitol hill. trump republicans are on school boards. there in statehouses. they want to be the future of their party and i mentioned that richard holtorf is a candidate for united states congress. he is running in a district for one of his primary opponents is congresswoman lauren boberg, thanks to redistricting, is running in a new district. it is a highly conservative rural district in this republican primary is scheduled later for this month on june 25th, has been dubbed the wild west primary bite colorado media. holtorf is going to have to out trump lauren boberg if he wants to win but he seems to have the right skills, and he has that giant trump campaign sign that we can't forget about. that is why democrats have a plan to stop trump republicans like richard holtorf. joining us now to talk about it is heather williams, president of the democratic legislative campaign committee. we focused on that single state level republican to explain how trumpism is trying to find root at the local level. perhaps it already has to some extent perhaps that is where many of the maga republicans in congress got their start and can have a severe impact on many of the most pressing issues in our country. >> absolutely. i think you are absolutely right in the hypocrisy that we are seeing with republicans at the state level all across the country. the supreme court has made clear that the issues we care most about our right are being decided in the state senate is the supercritical republicans are playing an active role in it but i have to say that all hope is not lost. our work here at the lcc is to represent the party responsible for this in our work is to make sure we have strong candidates running across the country in really important communities talking about what they will do when they get to their statehouse, expanding rights, protecting communities and i think that is really critical as we move through this election into november. >> in addition to funding candidates who are already on the ballot, how are you using resources to recruit would-be candidates into this fraught political environment? are you having a hard time recruiting candidates? >> that such a great question. we are seeing enthusiasm to run for office across the country. in these key battleground states that are also key state legislative battlegrounds, we are seeing candidates run in every corner of the states. this is incredible because these candidates who come out of their communities who are teachers and coaches and deeply rooted in these communities are showing up to run for office. they are knocking on voters' doors and having very real conversations about what the democratic party values are, about how they will lead in their statehouse and about how they will protect people's fundamental rights that we hold near and dear, and it is critically important that these races are funded, that they have the resources necessary to tell their stories, and that people are getting involved, so if folks want to go find out where they can head to dlcc.org. >> is certainly good news. we're going to continue this conversation. we are out of time but it is something we are going to keep tracking as we get closer to election day. appreciate you joining us this evening. tonight's last word is up next. don't go anywhere. d is up next don't go anywhere.
