donald trump, carrying a criminal connection. he launches attacks and calls on the supreme court to cancel his guilty verdict. a jury is seated for the federal trial of hunter biden. opening statements are hours away. bankrolling election deniers. the companies backing lawmakers that pushed the big lie as the 11th hour gets underway on this monday night. good evening, live from 30 bok center, we are 155 days from the election. americans have had a few days to face reality that one of the major candidates is now a convicted criminal. 50% of all americans think the verdict was correct compared to 27% that think it was wrong. that is according to a new poll. 49% think he should now and his campaign. when you look at independence, percent of people that believe the verdict was correct goes up to 52% donald trump continues leading the republican party in a revolt against the conviction while attacking the entire justice system. he is openly asking the supreme court to intervene by unknowingly guilty verdict before he is sentenced. he is already wanting about what could happen if he gets jail time. >> i don't know that the public would stand. i think it would be tough for the public to take. at a certain point there is a breaking point. >> allies in running mate are getting in line. tom cotton, jd vance and elise to phonic or even using his exact language thing president biden has weapon knifed the doj and calling the trial rigged yet while the gop said the president has the just the system under his thumb, let's not forget what happened. his only living son, hunter biden, is now on trial. a jury was seated today in the gun case. he has pleaded not guilty. as former u.s. attorney joyce fenton contributed pointed out, this fact should be the end of the argument that president biden just -- weapon knifed the system. the prosecutor was appointed by donald trump and president biden allowed to stay in place, specifically to determine whether the case should be indicted. with that, let's get smarter with the help of our lead panel. hugo, you spent almost all five weeks in the courtroom. we are what four days since the verdict, it is no surprise that donald trump and his allies have had a lot to say. what has stood out the most? >> the fact they like to say how much money they got from the conviction. >> that can't possibly surprise you. if you can't think that was preordained to line up those donors to manufacture a positive headline, if you don't think that's the case, i have a bridge to sell you brother. >> the second part, the obviously like to cite the numbers that work for them and they don't like to cite the numbers that don't. the polls that came out in the wake of the conviction have all been bad and they know it. they just pretend like it doesn't exist. i thought they would be pushed back and they're not even trying to touch it. there is a headline make a hold on which is 90% of republicans still pull -- support donald trump and they didn't even touch it. that is indicative of how fearful they are that the country is against him. >> 90% of republicans are not enough to win the election. is there any case the supreme court grants from his wish and steps in? >> there is not a universe where this happens. not at all. this is a unserious request. it is not the way government works at any level. the notion that the supreme court would take an interest in and then somehow nullify a verdict that was created in a state trial is unheard of. this is going nowhere fast. >> can you walk us through how it works. he is going to appeal. >> he is going to appeal at the state level. is going to try to find an issue whether it's the instructions by the judge or the gag order, something if not all things and create an appeal and try to do that before the court of appeals so he can stave off whatever sentence the judge imposes in july. >> is it safe to say, this is another loyalty test for everyone in the party, especially those that want to be considered for the he -- the vice president position. >> they are lining up to echo the language of donald trump which is saying falsely and wrongly that this was a conspiracy theory carried out by president biden and it's a rigged system. it is really interesting to see republicans talk about the rule of law and their respect for the system and for america while attacking this verdict. they are attacking the judge and thing it's his instructions are the reason it have learned. what is clear, the republican party wants to have a future. it seems as though it behooves you to get behind tromp and to continue. it is also interesting to see the president come out and say or give more and more aggressive. donald trump somebody that had snap after the election and just can't let it go. it is also the reason that he is talking conspiracy theories, including saying that vitamin democrats are trying to assassinate him when they were doing the classified documents case. in some ways it is interesting to see this. it is not surprising but interesting to see. use have president biden starting to get forceful. >> it is interesting but distressing. when you think of the life or think about the level of anger and the threats. we know one week ago, -- 's mother was swatted. how much worse is the environment going to get between now and november? you heard tromp, i don't think the people will stand for it. >> it is a real problem. the practice of how his supporters respond, not even talking about january 6, we are talking about the last 6 to 12 months of what happens when tromp even make statements about judges and jurors. all it takes is one person, one supporter, to act out in political violence and then we have a road to a very dangerous and problematic situation. he knows this. his advisors know this. they still encourage it because it makes them feel better that he can rant on social media. they know as well full well, all it takes is one person to act on that death threat. >> it shows he has ultimate loyalty from at least some americans and he can say i didn't give them direct instructions. >> his argument, i can say what i want if someone acts on it is not my fault. he knows and he is known since january 6 because we have the discussion around that. if he does something and encourages people, they will go to the capital. >> they will and today they are sitting in jail. peter baker points out if trump wins, he will have survived two impeachments, four indictments, civil judgments for sexual abuse and fraud plus a felony conviction. how can anyone believe that there would be any meaningful guardrails on donald trump this time? >> that is a valuable question. the notion of there being no guardrails is exactly why we have to get engaged right now with respect to the ones that exist within the system. who are we sending to congress? who is going to enforce the notion of checks and balances with respect to what he tries to do. we know the supreme court is not going to do it. they are essentially in his back pocket. the concern about project 2025 and all of the things we have already heard about what trump and his agenda is, going into a second term, should be an alarm to all of us. at this point, it doesn't seem that absent the legislature doing something that there will be any guardrails and it is a real concern. the judiciary has told us and shown us that they will not be the ones to hold him and check. >> while most republican senate candidates were loudly defensive of tromp, we saw their counterparts, democratic candidates more muted. they think they will be crossover voters to win. what you think of the approach? >> it is an interesting approach. it underscores the times we are living in. as you look at the poll to see that most independents believe the verdict was correct. it also tells you there are candidates that are looking at the people in that republicans that are disgruntled and say we should be able to convince them to come to our side. that means not talking about this verdict and not challenging the echo that we hear. it also tells you we are living in a time where you think of this as a jury verdict in a way that is operating in the american system that you would imagine candidates would say yes, i respect about verdict. there is the worry that speaking out against the verdict and in a way that makes people uncomfortable, that it will possibly cost people their race. it tells us it is the times we live in. really quickly you asked could it get worse? when you think about michael cohen's family and -- family being swatted, there is the idea that these jurors are out there in nervous. thinking that stormy daniels was intimidated and i want to underscore when we think about how candidates are talking about this in both parties, there are also 12 people that put their lives on the line when you think about the political violence who were brave enough to be part of the trial. i think about them when we think about where it is going. >> new topic, hunter biden's gun charges trial began today in delaware. it is about to roll tomorrow. what you expect? >> the prosecution is basing the case on circumstantial evidence. you don't have actual evidence of proving that he had actual cocaine. they haven't sent anything to a lab. what the case is based on is saying two things, you lied about the fact that you are either addicted to or using illegal drugs when you purchased the firearm. you are in possession around the time you are addicted to or using controlled substances. a lot of the cases are based on circumstantial evidence. i don't expect the political service. people showing up saying it is biden -controlled. it is not. you have a trump appointed prosecutor. it is going to be an interesting case for the government and it should be noted, even as it is a trouble point, it is not the type of case that the feds typically prosecute, absent a violent act. you usually don't see these types of cases prosecuted if someone has not done something violent. if there has been any political prosecution compared to manhattan, it is this one. >> this sounds incredibly naove. given what charles laid out, it is a trump appointed prosecutor. president biden allowed this to happen. shouldn't this put in and to the argument that trump and allies are pushing the president biden has his thumb on the justice system. if it was, he would not allow his only living son to be sitting for the trial. shouldn't this in theory and the argument? it is trump's tagline that he is shutting down the border and now president biden is actually doing at. >> the day he feels the political obligation, right now it is a lot of pressure. voters are more likely to support trump, despite his child separation policy and the fact that he scuttled the border deal this year that was coordinated by the democrats alongside james langford of oklahoma. biden feels the need to do something. even objective analyst look at this and say, the system is a bit out of control. it is worth mentioning border encounters are down. particularly the asylum-seekers , those numbers are at a high level. it is biden's effort to address the vulnerability and correctly be able to say, i am trying to solve these problems and donald trump is only looking out for himself. that message works across a number of issues. >> do you think these efforts are going to change the narrative, because the border has been the vulnerability? >> it is probably too late to really change the narrative. it is important because to my last point, it can ladder up into a number of issues where this can be a point where biden says you might not like every policy decision but it can be a message to right or left voters. i'm here trying to solve problems. i'm willing to work with people to the left to try and get things done. that is what i am trying to do. this other guy, only worried about himself was happy to scuttle the bipartisan issues. that is a message that is a more likely outcome. >> nikki haley has officially endorsed donald trump. immigration policies like this fun part of president biden, could he win at least some of the voters? >> he could but it boils down to framing and we know democrats aren't always great at that. joe biden needs to articulate two-week leaning republicans and independents and even we cleaning democrats that they are actually doing something. we know he doesn't understand the typography map and wants to build walls through rivers. this also helps them with the latino voters. they are very concerned and vocal about immigration. that might help him with latinos and texas and arizona. >> let's talk about numbers. let's wait, as you are both talking about buying them and who will stick with biden, i am thinking about lara trump. republicans need him. you just were calling trump a narcissistic psychopath is focused only on self-interest. on what planet does that make sense for lara trump and trump himself and allies to go after larry hogan. they need him to win? >> on a planet where the stranglehold over the party and the belief that if he gets back into the white house he can do what he wants. he is not interested in doing what joe biden is doing. project 2025 is mostly about executive orders that have varying degrees of authoritarian impulses. i don't think he is worried about the senate vote count, he is worried about dominating the party and demonstrating strength. if there is any dissent it has to be stamped out. that is where you see larry hogan defending the rule of law. that all he did is say we respect the rule. you see him getting attacked. no insurrectionist and no extremist or conspiracists was ever criticized by the rnc during the mcdaniel years. >> shouldn't controlling the senate and winning the senate be top artie? >> we start with those members of congress who voted in 2021, not to certify the election, even though that was based on baseless allegations of fraud for which there was no evidence. then we add members of congress who got there later but ran on the lie that donald trump in fact won the election. we start with that and we also look at votes taken since then and actions that are clearly up or down actions that were either to deny steps to get accountability or support immunity. we look at the companies that have given the most money to congress who have done the most to undermine democracy. not only are we finding that, almost 1800 companies have given more than $145 million, we are also seeing here are the companies that are going far to undermine democracy. then there are other companies that are a different story and have lived up to pledges and have prioritized democracy. it is important for the people to understand. >> democracy makes the country and the economy work. i am not sure i understand why any companies would restart political donations to lawmakers who promoted the lie and voted against certifying the election. what is the incentive? >> it comes down to politics as usual where companies believe it is going to be in their interest to support members of congress on both sides and support members in positions of power or who might end up in positions of power and potentially donald trump himself along with those members. they think those are people that are gonna make decisions about them. a lot of companies have decided that it is easier for them to pretend this effort to overturn the election never happened. they are going to behave as though it never happened. the risk to democracy is real. it is continuing today and not only is it time for the people if we lose a functioning democracy, it is also bad for business if you don't have stability or any company can be retaliated against because a powerful leader doesn't like the thing they did. in the long term it -- it should be an interest to promote democracy. we are trying to remind them of that. >> a lot of the companies say this the price of doing business. not everyone resumes donations. there are a lot of companies that said no, we are out. big companies like nike and ebay. they are still kicking at. it hasn't hurt them. >> that is really powerful. when you have companies like nike, lyft, salesforce and ebay. they are not suffering. there showing you can have these principles and not be supporting members of congress who undermined democracy and continue to do it. you don't have to support these ones that are threatening the democratic way of life. you can still succeed as a company and short-term while securing longer-term interest for business and all americans. >> it is disappointing and disturbing but not terribly surprising. you want to stay on the right side of at least one half of congress. >> there are republicans that don't support it. >> they are playing the odds. they are going to hand out money where they can. we have seen this in the last several days. they are playing the hand they want to be dealt which is lower taxes and less regulation. they want to play on the side in favor. that is why they resumed their donations, irrespective of the larger considerations around a functional democracy that is good not just for individuals but a stable environment. >> it is pay to play. it is deregulation and lower taxes. they have a lot of stakeholders. employees and customers. they have investors. that suppose" that republicans buy sneakers too. the idea of alienating part of your customer base is not that appetizing. when i think about it, if i am one of the stakeholders, i want to look at that management and say do you believe in free and fair elections? do you believe in the peaceful transfer of power? >> with all those ins and outs aside, free and fair elections and peaceful transfer of power. the basic tenets that we need for this to work. >> is massive disbelief that anything will go wrong if president trump were reelected. it would be some variation on the theme that we saw that will not bring to an end democracy as we know it. a lot of people are playing that game and i truly doubt that anything is at risk going forward. >> after january 6, the ceo of the largest bank in the world, the insurrection of disgrace. there has probably been a frosty relationship. we were talking about it, and a flippant sort of way, he probably did some good things too. i just don't know how you can square that circle knowing what happened on january 6 and with the big lies. and though mentioning how many pete will came into congress in that midterm election who continue to push this. these people need to be called out. as investors and customers and employees, they need to be held to accountability. we are taking a quick break. we need both companies to advertise. thank you. these two are sticking around. when we return it is discount time. more stores, slashing prices. the question, will it change the way consumers are viewing the strength of the economy. th. >> inflation got out of control. now we will start to normalize the prices. what is the impact? >> we have seen this trade down. matter where you are, i just saw a stat that the average walmart consumer has a $100,000 household income. that has gone up dramatically. you are even seeing middle- class folks trade down to walmart. at the end of the day, the situation, there have been lots of polls. there is a harris poll that was done by the guardian saying more than half of americans feel like we are in a recession and the stock market is down. why is that? we still have unemployment at a 50 year low. it comes down to inflation and the fact that gasoline national averages $3.55. it goes back to their perception. they look across the board at the supermarket and gas and it adds up a lot more. >> the fact that these businesses were able to drop prices like that, what does that tell you about why they raised them? >> they were able to maintain margins they didn't have for a long time. grotius and other businesses in that sector generally run on very thin profit. ikea, walmart, costco and walgreens anomic donelson burger king and chipotle, they are all cutting prices. we are getting back to a normalized rate. the biggest problem, it is the overall level of prices. the increase from pre-2019 that has people upset. the average increase overall is 19% groceries 25% and housing 40%. it is not going to come back down unless we have a recession. people don't understand the choice that was made. in the pandemic, we were either going to have a very long deep recession or depression or we would run the risk of over stimulating the economy and suffer inflation. we took the latter course which is much as people are upset, the alternative would have been far worse. >> there is new reporting of data that 72% of the people surveyed said finances are doing well. lamere asked about the economy, only 22% view the economy in a positive light. what can change that? >> if it bleeds it reads. you think about the negativity from the media, they know you get a lot more clicks from map them positive news. also a lot more partisan than it has ever been. at the end of the day you have a loss of trust. we have seen that dramatically picked up. that has a lot to do with the way americans feel about the macro. wage inflation has offset a bit of the goods inflation.. is where the disconnect lies. >> i have been to multiple airports. you can barely walk through. going to restaurants and conventions and all around the country and people are spending money as if it were a normal and strong economy. >> those same people are complaining about how expensive the hotel was, their rental car in the food. if you are president biden sitting on an economy where people are making and spending money but they don't like the price of things and that is negatively impacting the sentiment, what do you do? >> you acknowledge it prices are higher and you at knowledge that we made a choice not to go into depression and you point out, the unemployment rate has been below 4% for 27 months. something that hasn't happened since lyndon johnson. i don't know how much stronger of a case can be made for the economy being in reasonably good shape, given what we have gone through. >> i want to go back to what we were touching. not just corporations but what you mentioned earlier. wall street's biggest names, some of them are now backing trump. i want to go through some of the reasons. in the last cup of weeks you have -- potentially backing trump, depending on who he picks as of the he. the are using reasons i don't understand. piercing inflation. donald trump has not presented one single policy that would lower inflation. he is doing the opposite. they are mentioning immigration. to day, president biden said he will close the border. we know that republicans just blocked the last thing he wanted to do and facing anti- semitism. i don't know if you remember charlottesville but i do. it was donald trump that said they were good people on both sides. what is the real reason?
