because we know it allowed young people to stay on the parents insurance. what do you think? because i know you have a particular view how polling is capturing or not capturing how young voters feel >> john, we're not -- we're not moving forward. you know, i was thankful enough to be with my father for thanksgiving, and, you know, i look at him. he integrated his public high school in miami in the 1960s. my mother never went to integrated schools. i see the work that they did in education and in their jobs over the years, moving this country forward, they and their friends. we see it rolling back. so we have to make the connection between senator tuberville's rhetoric and donald trump's rhetoric with what we saw with three students in vermont, what we're seeing with the senator voting against the covid hate crimes bill that was put forward because we saw anti-asian hate during the time of high covid. we're seeing rising anti-semitism in cities across the country, and anti-muslim hate. this rhetoric fuels the fire with, you know, seemingly, you know, voters who aren't really paying attention, but they are paying attention. you know, people like senator tuberville are giving them permission to really tap into the most base level feelings of humanity. i know that, you know, hillary clinton tried to, you know, have a campaign of, you know, it's about love. joe biden, you know, is a decent man, by and large. lots of people compare him to jimmy carter, where he really cares about his family and the country. but there's something else that we need. we need more surrogates on the democratic party to really help people understand how the republicans are really just tapping into some of our worst instincts and making it okay for people to follow suit. sadly, we've seen the violent repercussions of that in cities and states across the country. >> we certainly have. it feels combustible, particularly post january 6th. there may be political violence heading into the election, as well. disturbing time. we appreciate this important conversation. from public scholar fellow at the city college of new york, christina greer. great to see you. up next, as lawmakers aim to pass legislation before christmas, one key component in a potential border deal is unlikely to be included. we'll tell you what's being left off the table. coming up on "morning joe," new details surrounding what several hostages faced in captivity, as the israel-hamas truce enters its fifth day. ahead, the great aunt and cousin of 4-year-old american-israeli hostage abigail idan will join us on the heels of her release. plus, why a group of conservative lawyers is now warning that the possibility of a second donald trump presidential term could pose a constitutional crisis. and actor kevin bacon will be a guest live here in studio. you won't want to miss that. "morning joe" just a few moments away. what small communities can achieve. trying to give a better life to people that don't have the means to do it. si mi papá estuviera vivo, sé que él tuviera orgulloso también de vivir de esta viviendo una vida como la que estamos viviendo ahora. es electricidad aquí es salud. welcome back. young immigrants protected by daca may be left out of the border deal that lawmakers are trying to strike before the end of the year. nbc news has learned that pathways to citizenship for immigrants protected by the program are not likely to be included in the border deal currently being negotiated by lawmakers. republicans are using the immigration deal as a bargaining chip, demanding tougher border security measures and more rigorous asylum laws in exchange for additional ukraine aid that the biden administration has been pushing for. congress, though, on a very tight schedule, with lawmakers hoping to pass legislation before the christmas holidays that would also include additional aid to israel and the indo-pacific region, as well as potentially border security and ukraine. joining us now, congressional reporter for the "new republic," graceseagers, who is going to help us figure this out. let's start with the immigration piece of it. give us an update right now as to what you're hearing about the border deal and how likely it is to occur. >> right. it's not like the issue of immigration has ever been easy for members of congress, but republicans have the cards here. democrats need nine or ten of them to sign onto any aid package that includes aid for ukraine, israel, the indo-pacific. this border package, element of the package, is part of that deal. but it means that republicans have more of the cards here, and they're choosing to play them. so, as you mentioned, daca, dreamers, legalizing their status is not exactly something that's super popular with republicans, particularly since they hold the house. what i'm hearing is that if there is any republican assent to this deal, it is going to involve reform of asylum protections and also the -- a further discussion of humanitarian parole and allowing migrants into the u.s. on humanitarian purposes. it's definitely not going to be something that democrats are very happy with. even though we have a few democrats negotiating this package, it seems like it's probably going to end up skewing more on the republican side than anything else. >> grace, let's talk about another thorny piece of this, which is the ukraine aid. now, new house speaker mike johnson yesterday did suggest that he was supportive of the cause, but it's still not quite clear what he means or what he's promising. fill us in as to the latest. >> yeah, it's almost as if congress is sort of mashing together their most difficult issues in the hope that passing one of them could mean passing all of them. the problem here for supporters of aid to ukraine is that they're just not sure, as you said, of speaker johnson's commitment. he's previously voted against aid to ukraine. they're hoping now that he is speaker, he'll understand the importance of this. supporters say this is particularly important to form a bulwark against russian president vladimir putin. but the problem is, there is really receding support among republican voters, among many republican lawmakers, especially in the house. also, we're seeing some skepticism from republicans in the senate, as well. now, there is expected to be a briefing of the situation in ukraine for senators soon, but it's unclear whether this will actually move any votes or further support from ukraine from those who are pretty dug in. >> yeah, and certainly, as you mentioned, these issues are all so complicated, and they're running out of time. we heard from senator schumer earlier in the show saying urgency, the lawmakers should be prepared to potentially spend the holidays there. we know how loathe they are to do that. maybe that'll be the deadline they need. grace, good to see you, as always. thank you for your reporting this morning. we appreciate it. of course, congress will also deal with the fate of george santos in the coming days. thanks for getting up "way too early" on this tuesday morning. "morning joe" starts right now. how many americans are still being held hostage, and do you have proof of life? >> we think the number is -- well, it's less than ten, probably in the neighborhood of, you know, eight to nine. we don't have firm, solid information on each and every one of them. >> national security council
