[tense music] an escalation in the political fight over immigration. yes, we will help facilitate that transport. florida governor ron desantis taking credit for sending airplanes carrying migrants from san antonio, texas, to martha's vineyard. 49 people, millions of dollars, for what? because if i want to make a point by inconveniencing not just the people i'm dumping but inconveniencing the people that i'm going to dump them on, that's a perfect place to do it in. this was extremely deliberate. these people were handpicked. based on what i'm hearing, it sounds to me like these people have all been kidnapped. that they were all victims of a crime. there's a proper way to come into this country-- not sneaking across the fucking border. [overlapping voices] so i get a call at around 4 o'clock, and i was like, what? and she said, we have about 50 venezuelans in the parking lot. and i-- why? what do you mean? two planes wednesday take about 50 undocumented migrants, including children, from san antonio, texas to martha's vineyard. [speaking spanish] and i saw them walking across from the high school to where the bus stop. i was confused. i was confused. because i was like, how did you get here? and who sent you here? so we had mom and dad and kids. they kept saying, we're hungry. haven't eat since breakfast. this was 4 o'clock in the afternoon. they cried. they scared that we're going to separate them like is done before. we seen on the news. and i got one of the mom. and i said, listen. i promise you, we're not going to take your kids away. it was getting late. and then someone said, ok, st. andrew can host them for the night. [muffled conversation] that's a very small island. it's 50 people showing up without anywhere to go. you have to marshal a fair amount of local resources to help with that. so i immediately headed there to help out with the people who had landed. we didn't know the people. we didn't know the situation. and i said to my staff, we're all going to stay awake. people wanted to help. people wanted to give. people wanted to donate. by the time i got there, people already had food. i hopped in and started blowing up air mattresses with a bunch of other volunteers. you know, we had people who need medical attention. we had a guy who got arrested by the cartel in mexico and had all his teeth broken. the scene was, let's figure this out. let's solve this issue. let's get-- let's help these people. many of them had nothing more than the clothes on their back, and there were just all of these news cameras, and all of these people, and all of these police, and it was just very surreal. [speaking spanish] we're legal first responders. that really is our role. and my team was on the ground immediately the day after the flights arrived. the migrants were in crisis. [speaking spanish] i got into the back room, and i immediately said, i need to speak to every individual. and on that first day, i knew what they were told wasn't true. all of the refugees, they were asking, like, when do they start work? like, where am i working tomorrow? they firmly believed they were coming here for housing and a job. they entered the country legally. and it was so hard to look them in the eye and say to them, not tomorrow. not tomorrow. they realized that they had been transported thousands of miles away from the immigration venues where they were supposed to show up. and on the ground in san antonio, they were all granted authorization to come into the country, had scheduled them for hearings and proceedings. they were afraid that they were going to get deported. they were afraid that they were in breach and non-compliance because they had been transported away from the places they were supposed to check in. [speaking spanish] doesn't speak spanish, and-- the way we found out about who was behind this was on fox news later that evening. we are not a sanctuary state, and it's better to be able to go to a sanctuary jurisdiction. and yes, we will help facilitate that transport for you to be able to go to greener pastures. ron desantis, he even sent a camera crew there to greet the migrants when they landed. those are the only people he told in the area that the migrants were coming. it is shameful and inhuman. many of these victims were deprived of medical care despite clear, existing injuries. the minute even a small fraction of what those border towns deal with every day is brought to their front door, they all of a sudden go berserk. after the migrants arrived, they start seeing themselves in the news. [overlapping speech] when you're from venezuela, a country that is run by a regime that will hunt down political enemies, the idea of having your photo in the news is incredibly threatening. --humanitarian crisis in venezuela, where the-- and then to see that it was actually a government official that was taking responsibility for what happened to you? it completely triggered our clients. desantis is rightly fed up with paying for biden's open border. he has a sense of humor, doesn't he? martha's vineyard is loaded with rich liberals. [brisk music] martha's vineyard and nantucket are seen as very wealthy communities, and that's completely true for two months out of the year. but the people who actually live on martha's vineyard year-round, the residents-- it's an incredibly diverse community. it's a community where the median salary is actually below the state average. there's a historic black community on island that has been there for generations. there's the aquinnah tribe that's been there for centuries. and a quarter of the island population is brazilian. here, everywhere you go is lots and lots of brazilian families. so the second language spoken around the island is portuguese. brazilian portuguese. bill gates goes to martha's vineyard. so does oprah, james taylor, spike lee, amy schumer, and many more. and all of them-- every one is a much better person than you are because they support diversity. and now for the first time, they're going to have some diversity. [tense music] well, ron desantis has now made it official, and he has just posted within the last few moments what he had telegraphed, which is he's running for president. so any crime has a motive, right? governor desantis wanted the press. he wanted the coverage. he wanted the news. he wanted the cameras. he wanted the soundbites. he wanted tucker carlson. that evening, i actually emailed the chief of police and had said, based on what i'm hearing, it sounds to me like these people have all been kidnapped. that they were all victims of a crime. [beeping] as sheriff, i am charged with protecting every square inch of the 1,200 square miles of bexar county. our county seat is the city of san antonio. the topic of moving people from point a to point b isn't anything new. but with this one, details started to emerge that it was a government-funded operation run by the florida government. which really got my attention because what business, quite frankly, what business is it of governor desantis or anybody in florida what's going on in my county? so i get a call, and it's a gentleman purporting to be the sheriff of san antonio. i called rachel, cold-called her, and she kind of found it hard to believe that a law enforcement officer from texas would be wanting to help with this situation. [somber music] [speaking spanish] the group that she was working with was grooming these vulnerable individuals to trust them. and they brought all these people to the la quinta near the municipal airport. there is nothing around the motels. and even within the motel, they were placed in the back. they were not allowed to go through the lobby. they were there for the amount of time it took them to get to their magic number, which was 50. and when they got to their magic number, that's when the text was, yahtzee! we've got 50. the text messages had larry keefe, governor desantis's immigration safety czar, communicating with governor desantis's chief of staff saying, you know, i'm on the ground in san antonio. conditions are good. they were just pawns to be used, and for what? i mean, it's clear that the motive was not anything other than advancing a political agenda. [speaking spanish] [indistinct conversation] [coughing] they did not know that it was a government-funded plane they were getting on. they were told it was a wealthy benefactor of some sort. [tense music] mind you, these people were not picked up straight from here to martha's vineyard. they had to stop off in florida first. they only stayed on the tarmac for a few minutes. i believe-- and again, this is speculation-- that was done so that they could then tap into these monies that would allow them to be expelled as undesirables from the state of florida. it's several hundred thousands of dollars that was ultimately spent. i can't imagine that there are taxpayers that are happy about that. the statute says that you have to use it to get them out of this state. how do you justify using the money if they started in texas? most of them are intending to come to florida. they are coming to florida. we are taking them from florida to sanctuary jurisdictions. [speaking spanish] [speaking spanish] there was a much more sophisticated scheme in play to produce these very pretty, very official-looking red notebooks that had all this fake information, all these fake benefits. [speaking spanish] just for the record, this was voluntary. all migrants were put up in hotels, given accommodations. they were fed. they were showered. they were offered haircuts and any other services that they were needed, correct? yeah. not only that, they all signed consent forms to go. and then the vendor that is doing this for florida provided them with a packet that had a map of martha's vineyard. it had the numbers for different services on martha's vineyard. and then it had numbers for the overall agencies in massachusetts that handle things involving immigration and refugees. so it was clearly voluntary, and all the other nonsense you're hearing is just not true. [intense music] [muffled conversation] i'm here on the bus. and we're on our way to make sure that everyone has the applications filed that they need, and that everyone gets the resources that they need to get settled in here. it was only a temporary fix, but we were able to have bank accounts set up for them, which came with spanish tellers to teach them how to use the mobile app on their phone. we had 49 phones in two days. the right wing media immediately spun it that people got kicked off of martha's vineyard because they weren't wanted there. which is, of course-- like, that's what they're going to do. our venezuelan brothers and sisters came to this country for a better life, and unlike so many, they actually found it. they arrived in one of the prettiest and most affluent destinations on the planet, an idyllic island with unlimited resources and many thousands of empty beds, and best of all, a population that claimed to love them. no person is illegal, read the lawn signs. but it was all a lie. 50 brown people was too many for the people of martha's vineyard. they called in the army to have them removed like trash. they were kept in a military barracks. and they wanted to work, so they cleaned the barracks from top to bottom to earn their keep. because they didn't want to be just fed three squares a day for nothing. they wanted to work for us. they cleaned the barracks from top to bottom. [seagulls calling] four of them came back. as soon as they'd met their lawyer, they left the base, and they came back to the island. there's a brother and a sister and cousins, and they're all a family. their names are deici, jhorman, eliud, and daniel.
