Tonight, knowing that robert card its no longer a threat to anyone. I know there are some people many people who share that sentiment, but i also know that his death may not bring solace to many. But now is a time to heal. And with this search concluded, i know that Law Enforcement continues to fully investigate all the facts, so we can bring what closure we can to the victims and their families. All 18 victims in wednesdays attack have now been identified. I want to begin with nbcs kathy park, who is at the Press Conference in lewiston tonight. Kathy, thank you for being there. When else you hear from officials . And how are you . This had to be an extraordinary few days. Yeah, and an extraordinary 12 hours, to be quite frank with you, stephanie. So, at 10 00 this morning we got an update as to how Law Enforcement was going to move forward with their investigation. They talked about the law Police Presence in the lisbon area, the boat launch in that area, that is where the suspect abandoned vehicle was located, and thats why they decided to ramp up the activity there, and then at 5 00 this evening, just a couple of hours ago, they lifted the shelter in place order. And so shortly after that, we assume the investigation was still ongoing. Robert card was nowhere to be found and then in the 9 00 hour we got an update saying that there was going to be this Press Conference, and then shortly after that we found that robert card has been confirmed dead with an apparent self inflicted gunshot wound. Officials have not shared many more details beyond that, stephanie. Tomorrow at ten a. M. They hope to offer more details as to how the body was found, but as you mentioned, this community has been gripped with fear and a lot of anxiety with a man hunt underway, entering a third day, but Law Enforcement, as well as the governor, you heard her just a few moments ago saying this community can breathe a sigh of relief at this point. And there is some closure for the Family Members of the 18 victims. And of course more than a dozen people also were injured and are in recovery from their injuries this evening. This community was on pause for the last two days, because you are so many questions as to where this individual was hiding, potentially. A lot of questions as to where he may have fled to. Was he dead . Was he alive . But once again, in the past hour we found out that the proper, that robert card, the suspect in this Horrific Mass Shooting here in maine has been found dead. Stephanie . Cathy, thank you so. I want to bring in nbc correspondent george solis who is in lisbon main. Frank figliuzzi, it is here, a former fbi Assistant Director for counter intelligence, and michael sheppard, a reporter for the bangor the daily news, where hes reported on gun laws for the last two years. George, youre in the town where robert cards body was found. Tonight . Good evening, stephanie, well first of foremost this word has been spreading quickly throughout this community you. Her there during the Press Conference, Officials Saying that the bodies recovered around 7 45, but were didnt really break until much later this evening, and that is because they want to notify the Family Members of the victims first and they also, interestingly, said they wanted to notify the family of robert card, who they noted was being, frankly, cooperative during the investigation. Were some questions early on about that aspect of it, as more information came to light about robert cards Mental Health issues during this investigation. This particular area that i have been in was the center and focal point of the investigation earlier today. There were helicopters, both the androscoggin river, boats in the water, dive team because authorities were leaving no stone unturned, trying to see if they get any trace of robert card. We now know he was found not far from where i am standing right now, we are recycling facility, where Officials Say he may have worked there for a while, a vet self inflicted gunshot wound. Of course we waited for more details from the authorities. A ten a. M. Press Conference Tomorrow with more information about the details of how he was found, whether all the clues leading up to that moment, but i can tell you, being in town here over the last couple days, speak with some of those Family Members, just this evening i spoke with the relative of a Peyton Brewer ross. His brother bring this chapter to a close. Maine can begin the Healing Process in earnest now. And this is, again, some of the sentiment i have been hearing from some Family Members who have been on pause, the whole community on pause, frankly, waiting for any sign of robert card, whether dead or alive. Vigils have been on hold. The Port Memorials are on hold. We will maybe see more happening here in the next coming days as this community can now breathe that sigh of relief. Stephanie . Frank, what is your reaction to how cards body was found . Are you surprised . Im not surprised. Weve been talking since this happened about the likelihood that he may have killed himself and thats because for decades long enforcement has been studying Spree Killers and that is what we are dealing with, a spree killer, not a serial killer. Spree killers only stop by wanted to. Means they die at the hands of Law Enforcement or by their own hands. Thats what appears to have happened. Michael, you wrote about how unprecedented this size of this man hunt is in your state. The Community Must be breathing a sigh of relief. But i want to ask you about what george was talking about. Tonight, Lewiston Maine is relieved. But tomorrow, what happens tomorrow morning . The whole state must still be in shock. Yeah, this is maine. We are known for being a safe state. We have relatively relaxed gun law,s but a strong hunting culture. And this is a place that is just different from a lot of other states. So i think we have a lot of questions about how this suspect obtain this gun. Of course we have all heard about his mental state, that he did two weeks of Mental Health treatment, there is a lot of questions about whether police here wherever in touch with him, what they knew. Were going to learn a lot more. I think we really have heard a lot but more is going to trickle in about the stories of heroism, the Human Tragedies that unfolded at these places. So this is, the area is certainly relieved, that goes without saying, but theres a lot of healing, a lot more stories, a lot more heartbreak, i think. And its going to be, we are going to be, were still gonna be working double time to help this very human story. Frank, this ar15 style rifle killed 18 people, injured more, and his shut down a city of almost 40,000 people for the last two days. What does that say about how crazy this weapon is . It has become the Weapon Of Choice for mass killers. This particular weapon fired around that is known for its lethality. It passes through bodies. It is not unlikely that many of the people who were killed or injured in this incident were killed by a bullet that passed through someone else. Four minutes of the 911 call. So you have to ask yourself, how could it be that all of these people were dead and injured with that kind of Swift Response time . Its a killing the machine. Its the lethality of this weapon in the round that he was using out of that weapon. Michael, i want to go back to what you touched on, then. This man was hospitalized for Mental Health issues over the summer. His own family had expressed concerns about his mental state. Yet until he fired that weapon to nights ago, he didnt do anything illegal. We dont think. He was able to own an Assault Style rifle, free and clear. Thats what we think. He was treated in another state. Theres been some speculation as to why maines socalled yellow flag law, which is little different but red flag law and not quite as severe, didnt kick in. I think that what we really need to find out is, what contacted maine police have with him, if at all. And i think is going to the robe a debate in the Maine Legislature which is controlled by democrats about not only can control but also about how that law could maybe be strengthened and so Something Like this doesnt happen again. It probably would require stronger record shea sharing between the state the federal government. But there is going to be a lot to unfold here in maine. We have these debates here a lot in maine. Theres bipartisan opposition to adopting gun control issues all the time of uncovering gun politics. It has always been a tough conversation here. Like i said, maine is different in a lot of places in america, but the shooting showed us we are certainly not immune to the national played played of gun violence. Frank, one of the biggest Unanswered Questions to you right now . I desperately want to know what fell through the cracks here. You will be back on the job tonight . I feel like you do . I want answers. And i want to fix what went wrong here. Because clearly something went wrong. When you have Family Members contacting the police and saying hes talking, hearing voices that are telling him to kill people. And just think about that. Think about what it takes a Family Member to call the police on their own brother, son, cousin, and say this person is a risk . It takes a lot. You need to Pay Attention to that, and so the military actually is put him in a facility where he was at this west point doing some work in the state of new york. And so weve got to fix it. This socalled yellow flag law in maine, where it requires a Mental Health professional to sign off before the police can temporarily taken weapon. Im not a fan of. That why . Because it puts someone else between a threat and action. They are inserting a Mental Health professional into this win in other states, with red flag laws, the police or the Family Members can petition the court to take those weapons quickly. We need to fix this. George, how important is it tomorrow for the community to get to mourn together . Right, just thinking the last 48 hours, all of these people sheltered in place, isolated from one another when they need to be together. People need a hug. Yeah, it reminds me of another conversation i had with a resident here, kaitlan who was carrying a gun of her own. She was carrying out there in her waistband, it was the first thing we noticed when we spoke to her. And i asked her what is the decision that prompted this . Is this something you normally do . And she said, no, i normally would never get my gun on me, but im scared. I am scared for the life of my child. So i am here just outside of my apartment, should robert card show up, i want to make sure that i can protect my loved one. That is sort of the vibe that was out here during this intense man hunt. This community has wanted to grieve, they have wanted to put vigils together. They have wanted to mourn collectively. Everyone here, as weve been saying, is one degree of separation from knowing someone or having someone that they lost at the Bowling Alley, at the bar. It is going to be very interesting to see tomorrow morning as this community wakes up some of this news just hitting some peoples phones in the Public Safety alerts have gone out, social media, how they will respond. We expect, of course, some of the vigils to take place, some of those memorials to start taking place, Family Members of loved ones who live out of state to start coming into town to begin that grieving process, stephanie. Again, all 18 of those victims now identified today by officials as well. The youngest was 14 years old. So, obviously, a lot of grieving, a lot of understanding, this Community Will it is going to take time. A 14yearold and his dad just went out on a wednesday night to go bowling together. I almost dont want to ask you, frank, but is it safe to assume gun sales are up in maine tonight . Local reporters are saying that Gun Shop Owners in maine are saying that record sales are occurring. People are coming in, buying all the guns of, theyre flying off the shelves. This is the i get it, i get it. If i lived in rural maine, and a spree killer was on the loose and i was sheltering in place at home, i get it. Indeed, so we have to ask ourselves then, if we dont fix this problem, are we all going to walk around strapped . Are we all going to have Assault Style rifles at the bully nelly and as a local bar . Is that how we want to live . Michael, what are you healing from people in the community tonight . Weve heard a lot of those stories when our reporters are out on the scenes, theyre running into people who are armed themselves. Its the start of a Hunting Season. In this area. And officials were making calls today about how they were going to handle. That where theyre gonna cancel it statewide . Where theyre going to do this in four towns . These are Big Decisions in maine if Hunting Season were allowed to go forward tomorrow, it wouldve been utter confusion in a lot of these places. Wardens, the game wardens here wouldve had to really scramble at times to maybe figure out what was going on. So this these are these wouldnt be problems in other parts of the country, but these are the unique things about maine that we have to consider when youre discussing this incident. And look, but i think we just lost his shot. Frank, what happens next an investigation . This is now time to dig into who knew what when. And were all focused on motivation, but i caution people, when you are dealing with a serious Mental Illness, dont expect to get a logical answer. We cant apply logic to lunacy. What made perfect sense to the sky will not make any sense to us. Some garage that hes held he was suffering too. Absolutely, and the family, his family is suffering as well. The answers and im looking for, of course, when the police heard from the family, what did they do . When the u. S. Military found that they had someone with a Mental Illness and caused him, commanded him to involuntarily go for treatment, what did they do with that information . Where did it go . Weve looked at this before. It was several years ago, a shooting at a Baptist Church in texas that you might recall. That was in air force guy who had been in the brig in the air force for crimes that should have caused, require the air force to put him in the Background System so he couldnt buy a weapon. They didnt do it. They wrote a Big Fat Check to all the victims families. So we need those families dont want to a. Check, they want their Family Members. But isnt it complicated, because medical records or or private . But Mental Health professionals have a duty. If they think someone is about to violently act, out they need to do it. And if a family approached the police, as youve said, the police have an obligation to do something. So what is it that didnt cause that to happen . Thats what we need to know. Perhaps lawmakers have an obligation to do something, to protect people in robert cards situation, and of course, to protect the general public. Absolutely. 18 of whom unnecessarily lost their lives this week. George solis, frank figliuzzi, michael shepard, thank you all for being here tonight. An Idf Spokesperson says israel is, quote, increasing the Ground Operation in gaza and overnight, we have seen a major increase in bombings. Nbc news has been reporting from the area for more than two weeks, and tonight has been the most sustained bombing that has been heard today. Earlier today, we heard this from Prime MinisterBenjamin Netanyahus senior advisor. We are beefing up the pressure on hamas. We are hitting them hard, will be hitting them harder. And the goal is, as ive said to you in a previous broadcast, it is to destroy the Hamas Military Machine and to dismantle its control over gaza. We are beefing up the pressure, and theyll be feeling that more and more. Hamas will pay for its crimes against humanity. Hamas will pay for slaughtering our people. And tonight, we are starting payback. Lets get right to nbcs ellison barber, who is at the israel gaza border. Alison, its early early, Early Morning hours there. Tell us about what you experienced last night. Yeah, stephanie, until about 4 am local time, its just after six dam right now, but until about 4 am local, time we heard what i would describe as the heaviest and most sustained bombardment into Northern Gaza that we have heard in the nearly three weeks we have been reporting along this section of the gaza border. In the last two hours now, and again, at six a. M. , or just after six i am here now, theres been a bit of a lull. We have heard consistently military jets helicopters and drones circling overhead. We are still hearing artillery, but compared to what it was into the overnight hours, up until four a. M. , it is much more sporadic and comparatively minimal. Let me try to walk you through a rough timeline of what happened in the overnight hours. It was 8 15 when Idf Spokesperson for Israels Defense Forces said that they were expanding their operations into gaza, saying that they will carry out acts from the air saying the Israeli Air Force was targeting tunnels as well as other infrastructure. What they described as Terrorist Infrastructure in Northern Gaza. They also said that their Ground Forces were also expanding their operations into gaza. At about 8 30 pm local time, thats when we got a report from the primary Telecommunications ProviderInside Of Gaza, saying that all communications had stopped. There was a full stop of everything that they were working on in that area. We heard from the Palestinian Red Crescent that they had lost all communication with their teams on the ground, and that they were concerned that the primary method for people to call for an ambulance, the number there, 101, that that had been disrupted as well. Then, at about 11 13 pm local time, there was a post from hamass Military Wing saying that they were engaging with Israeli Forces in at least two cities inside of Northern Gaza, saying that they were violent clashes taking place in those two areas. Now, its been roughly ten hours since we really last had solid consistent communication from people Inside Of Gaza. We have not been able to get in touch with our nbc news teams in gaza for hours. Earlier, before midnight, they got a message to some of our colleagues in london, and they were describing this bombardment as the most significant one they had seen since the beginning of this war, saying every single block is impacted and they said that people, palestinians, civilians Inside Of Gaza were taking the dead and injured, trying to get them help on trolleys, and in tuktoyaktuks. We are hoping you hear some of that booms behind me now. We are hoping we are going to get more information, 70, as a stun sun starts to come up here in the next 45 minutes or so. But i cannot put into words i want to let you listen to this for a minute. This is kind of what it was like nonstop throughout the night. This is it is starting to pick up in the direction. Gaza is just behind us and its very so its difficult to see. But often, when we start hearing that Artillery Bombardment like that we will see the skyline start to light up and its difficult to see right now because of the weather here. But we are starting to hear that start again. Again, i would say the heaviest and most significant bombardment we heard lasted until about 4 am local time, the last two hours has been a little quieter. But you hear that. It sounds like Rolling Thunder and then we are starting to hear some of the Military Helicopters overhead as well. But the total blackout of information coming from Inside Of Gaza has been something we have not seen since this war began. That blocks which is a cybersecurity Monitoring Group when, they were tracking this, they said this was the most significant Internet Disruption they have seen Inside Of Gaza since this war began. Were talking no land lines, no cell service, and no internet. The question, and what we are going to have to see in the morning is, what does that mean for civilians, who are possibly calling for help and trying to get information as this bombardment moved in. Israel has said theyre goal with this war is one too bring home the 200 plus hostages that are still Inside Of Gaza, and reunite them with their families, and also to completely eradicate hamas from Inside Of Gaza so they never have the ability to carry out a Terror Attack like the one that took place in israel on october 7th. Stephanie . It must be in absolute hell Inside Of Gaza city right now. Alison ellison barbara, please stay safe and joining me now peter baker, chief White House Correspondent for the new york times, martin Mark Fletcher is here, former nbc correspondent and bureau chief in tel aviv. Two of his Family Members were held hostage by hamas, but thankfully, they were released a week ago today. Jeremy bash joins us, former Chief Of Staff at the cia and the pentagon. And retired four star u. S. Army general Barry Mccaffrey, a decorated combat veteran of vietnam and a former battlefield commander in the persian gulf. General, what sticks out to you in this escalation were seen from israel . Well, logically, the idea idea is now preparing the battlefield, running special Operations Forces inside gaza city, theyre coming in from the sea with the Navy Commando units. The Running Tank Mac forces in, trying to accomplish a bunch of things. One is pushback hamas from the border region so they dont end up with a couple of thousand fighters suddenly attacking israel again. Theyre trying to locate information on hostages, but mostly, theyre trying to degrade or kill hamas political and military leadership prior to what we would expect would be a significant 60,000 Troop Physical Occupation of gaza city. And theyre also trying to move some of the civilians out of the way. Fortunately, at one point, 1. 4 million apparently have moved out of central area, and are now in more safe conditions then theyll be when the ground force goes in. General, do you really think leadership is still there in gaza . We know some of the most prominent people in hamas werent there at all from the getgo. No question. I think mossad are probably after them wherever they are in the world also. This is a 30,000 Person Fighting Force of terrorists, theyre underground. So the idf using both air, and ground assets, 155 artillery presently, is trying to knock out not just the highlevel leadership, but the actual commanders of fighting units. Theyve got a lot of intel overhead, remotely piloted vehicles, air assets. Im sure the u. S. Is also giving them intelligence on whats going on from our extensive satellite system. Theyre trying to set hamas up for lower resistance when they go in underground. On the ground. Idf is very clever, they have a lot of units that specialize in various kinds of operations to include tunnels. Now, when we fought in tunnels in vietnam, i had 19 year old soldiers with a flashlight and a 45 caliber pistol going in there. The idf is much better prepared to deal with this. But at the end of the day, its a tragedy unfolding, its a nightmare for the civilian population. The idf may take thousands of casualties fighting in an urban environment. And the operation may well take weeks to consummate. Jeremy, whats on your mind tonight . Yeah, i think the idf is in this for the long haul to general mccaffreys point. There in no great rush to storm into gaza. Its been three weeks, and if you remember after 9 11, it took us about a month to set our force to set our force so we could go and decapitate alqaeda. The idfs approach here is theyre going to engage in Counterterrorism Operations that are going to be intelligence driven. The way the media is portraying this is that theyre going to turn gaza into rubble. There are probably about 250,000 structures in gaza, and i bet the idf has a target list of about 5000. So thats about 2 . 2 of the structures in gaza are going to be hit with precision munitions. And thats going to be really to drive hamas out of their spider hole, safehouses, out of the places where they conduct and plane operations, to describe their plan and control. To disrupt their communications, their weapon caches, to get after the rocket factories, and really try to degrade hamass war making capability. And then, and i think only then, will the idf go in and try to hold territory in gaza. Because they dont want to be there for the long term. They ultimately want to turn this over to a responsible arid arab led palestinian, potentially, organization with potentially International Presence there to ultimately govern cause a. Gaza. The idf does not want to be there for the long term. Martin, what do you make of this escalation . What do people in israel think about this . Escalation, the question of is this the Ground Invasion that we were all expecting, or wondering if it was going to happen . Not necessarily, by a long way. We just heard israeli spokesperson saying that were Beginning Payback. Its dramatic language he was very dramatic. Yeah, Beginning Payback time. Actually, israel been bombing gaza right now from the air. I think that had the already begun. But the issue of whether troops were actually on the ground get involved in a house to house urban fighting in gaza city, i dont think where there. I dont think were there yet. Certainly, the israelis are preparing the ground for that. But whether theyve actually taken the decision to do that, we dont yet know. Theres a lot of pressure coming from the United States government, coming from many sources saying dont do it, because you dont know whats going to happen after. The cost in lives, israeli lives and civilian lives, is going to be dramatic and theres so many of these, of these hamas fighters. And i dont call them terrorists at this point. Terrorists is what they did in israel. But theyre fighting now at home for what they believe. And it may not be what israel believes in, but theres a real Battle Of Ideologies as well as military soldiers on the ground coming up. So, Will Israel Go In . Theres so much to lose, and the israeli people are very divided on this question. There is a lot of support for going in, theres a lot of support for not going, because the cost is going to be so great. Dont forget, for every soldier that goes in, theres a family behind him one grain, wondering is this the right thing to do . And a family worried about their Family Members being held hostage. Hostage Family Members of course, because theyre going to get caught in the middle. And when the real fighting, heavy fighting starts, presumably, at that, Point Negotiations for the hostages release will be on pause at best. So theres this question of in israel, a, can we actually achieve this goal . And b, do we trust the government, which is very divided at the moment. Were hearing all the time about the discussion within the government about what to do, conflicts between the government and the israeli army about what to do, and this is all being felt by the people, who are confused. They want to take out hamas. They know they need to destroy hamas, because if they dont do it now, itll happen again if years time. But at the same time, the cost is going to be so great, the outcome so uncertain, and the trust in the government, i think maybe for the first time in israels history, theyre in a real war situation. It has been dramatically reduced. People dont trust netanyahu. And the people around him to do the best for israel in the situation. I believe thats pretty unique. Peter, whats the white house reaction to all of this . Well, of course, the white house has been standing strongly with israel in public while quietly suggesting caution. They asked that the Ground Offensive be delayed long enough to see what can be done with the hostages to make sure the Air Defense Capability was removed through the region. Theres a lot of nervous right now at the white house of course not just because whats happened in gaza, but whats happening throughout the region. We see iranian proxies in different parts of the region seemingly acting up. Theyve not launched a full scale second front writing like that, but american warplanes have no been gauged in action. They launched who airstrikes against munitions, iranian Munitions Facilities in syria in response to what they say are provocations by these proxies. And i think that the concern mainly in the Situation Room right now, at least one of the main questions in the Situation Room right now, where germany jeremy spent a lot of time, this is not going to stop just at the gates of gaza, its going to spread across the region and drag in American Forces potentially. Gentlemen, stick around, were going to take a quick break. But when we come back, were going to get into what this heavy bombardment could mean for all of those hostages still stuck in gaza. When the 11th hour continues. Hour continues home. Good thing gertrude found delsym. Now whats going around is 12hour cough relief. And the giggles. We are still following the Breaking News on the escalation in the israelhamas war. It comes as israel says hamas is Still Holding over 200 people hostage in gaza after the Terrorist Attack on october 7th. Peter baker, Martin Fletcher, jeremy bash, and general Barry Mccaffrey are still with us. General, how are the Hostage Negotiations obviously complicated by these continued airstrikes . Well, look, at the end of the day, hamas is holding not just a couple hundred hostages, theyre holding infants, children,s 30 of them, elderly people, people who are badly injured, women who have been sexually assaulted. Theyre doing it for a deliberate purpose. Its a payoff. Theyre desperate for a ceasefire. Humanitarian pause, three days of open movement around the city, thats what theyre after. I think the israelis have determined, and by the way, id be on surprised if we didnt see hamas release a chunk of their hostages, 30 or 40, in the coming week. But at the end of the day, the israelis have concluded invasion, dominate the surface, and then use Route Intelligence and searches and special ops, theyll get back more of them. But the hostage situation, obviously, is a matter of huge concern to the israelis. There at terrible peril. There wont be a good, great outcome to the story. Martin, help us understand what these families are going through. I cant imagine the terror theyre feeling. The fact that only four have been released in three weeks doesnt suggest its going to be a large really soon, even though were talking about that. Were hearing about negotiations. Look, desperation, fear, anger, anger with the hostage takers, anger also with the rather poor Israeli Government response to their needs, which they were complaining about in the first couple weeks. The communication . Yes, because they didnt get in contact with the families for about a week for many of them. They did know what to do or say. Theyre demonstrating, and conducting a rather Successful Pr Campaign in israel in around the world, especially in the United States, of course. Calling for help. Youve seen these kidnapped all over the place, posters of kidnapped and the faces, and the idea they kidnapped the babies. Why would you kidnapped babies . Its incomprehensible. So if you are a parent, and your child has been kidnapped in gaza, how can you put that into words . Its bittersweet for you as your wifes cousins were released last friday. How are they doing . I dont know. And this is part of the issue. Because they wont talk, they havent yet talked to the wider family. Theyre in the house somewhere in israel. They havent gone back to the United States yet, surprisingly to me, anyway. Even though they live in the United States . There are americans live in the United States, absolutely. But having gone back. Yeah and that suggests that a, they dont want to be part of any kind of Media Craziness in america if they come back. But also, maybe theyre just trying hard to process what they went through. You know, part of the reason so many israelis are hesitating about whether to support a Ground Invasion, and the latest polls show 49 of israelis want the Ground Invasion to be delayed. And partly, its because they know that when that begins, the full out war, its going to the end of the chances of getting their Family Members home anytime soon. Jeremy, these hostages are from all over the world. How could this impact israels relationship with those countries . Well stephanie, i think hamas things they are winning the pr war. And i know thats a controversial statement, but let me tell you why. If you look at what the u. N. Did this week, they passed an incredibly lopsided resolution that didnt mention the war and on hamas, that didnt mention the attacks on israel from october 7th, that called for a ceasefire, nobody usain would tell the United States after 9 11 to have a ceasefire with visavis alqaeda. As we know from proportions, this would be the equivalent 52,500 americans being killed in a Terrorist Attack. We had 3000, we went to war against alqaeda. So the hamas leadership, the political leadership, believe that theyre winning the pr war. So whats the incentive for them to release hostages . They believe that theyre able to, you know, use human shields, show people suffering, and they are suffering because theyre you being use this human shields, and the International Media is not focusing on that. Some of the coverage of the israeli victims of the october 7th attack has sort of faded, and the stories moved on. So i dont think theres a big incentive for hamas to release hostages at this point. It hasnt faded here, jeremy, and well cover them every day. Peter baker, i am sorry, i dont have any more time. I will see you next week. Jeremy bash, general Barry Mccaffrey, thank you. Widespread sirens and explosions were heard throughout the night. Back with me tonight, celebrated author and president ial historian michael beschloss. His latest book, president s of war. Martin fletcher also back with us. Michael, you have written extensively about war. What is your reaction to all the coverage, everything that we have seen over the last two weeks . Well, one thing, and im so glad to see our friend Martin Fletcher back on nbc, even before martin was at nbc in 1973, 50 years ago this what week, richard nixon, the president , and head marie kissinger, secretary of state was, as martin well knows, and as you know, stephanie, they were trying to preserve the existence of israel, which is a commitment that no goes back 75 years to 1948. But at the same time, what were they worried about . They were worried about that israelis might strike back at their arab neighbors too hard, and that this war might spread. And it might even turn into a direct conflict between major powers, especially the soviet union and the United States. So what weve been seeing joe biden doing is essentially the same thing that american president s have done at the time at Mid East Wars in 1967 and 73 and even 1956, which is help make sure israel survives, but at the same time, convince the israelis that these sensitive enough to their plight that lets not make this any more difficult than it needs to be. Martin, how do you think the History Books will look back on this moment . Thats an interesting what a great question. And i would just like to admit, thank you michael, let me just say michael mentioned 50 years ago the 1973 war, and we have to see this whole thing in a context. Whatever happens in this conflict, theres always something that happened before. And actually, 50 years ago, when israel, when general sharon turned the tide in the war and crossed the suez canal to invade egypt, i was the world pool camera man traveling demonstrating in this over the last year. And change this is dumb. And Young Leaders coming in. The governments failed, the army failed, intelligence failed, and there has been a reckoning after the war. Its going to be a new system, a set of leadership. I think President Biden got it right that the two state solution, which is basically dead in the water, as a peace process, will have to be revived, one after the other. That can only happen with the complete destruction of hamas. And how you completely destroy hamas, above my pay grade. Michael, what do you think of President Bidens actions at this moment . I think we are benefiting from the fact that we have got a president who has been doing this in one way or another for 50 years, and has muscle memory. When the russians invaded ukraine, no one had to give him an index card saying what had happened. His immediate Index Instinct was to say, hey, this could easily spiral into world war iii. Number two, or be, thank god for nato. Lets use it. See, lets build a coalition to make sure that the ukrainian survive. Because, if they do not, this could spread all around the world. Experienced counsel the presidency. Its not very popular to say. Michael beschloss, thank you so much. Martin fletcher, thank you as well. Martin, last time you and i were here, we had good news, good news for your wifes family, the next day. Lets hope that you are meeting here tonight in something positive tomorrow.
