Hill is abc Senior National political reporter, sahel kapoor. So, lets talk, sahil. In light of representative gates saying that he is going to move to oust Kevin Mccarthy, what are you hearing about members on capitol hill, talking about, with respect to yesterday and how we move Going Forward . Well, charles. This is something matt gains has been threatening force quite some time. Now he never wanted Kevin Mccarthy to become speaker in the first place. He never voted for him. He just backed off and said he would vote present along with several others in order to pave the way out of room to move. But the price of Doing Business, you know, Kevin Mccarthy decided to change the rules that any one member of the house could call a motion to vacate. He decided that was the cost of Doing Business with his republican hardliners. Is allowing him to be on a short leash. This is what we saw yesterday, speaker mccarthys declaration of independence from matt gaetz. He is been threatened by gaetz repeatedly, and, very explicitly, the motion to vacate if he were to find the government in democratic vote. And thats exactly what happened yesterday after recognizing that he had other options to try to put a much more continuing resolution on the day earlier, it was voted down by his own hardliners. And he says that is what pushed him to make this move. Now mccarthy spoke just moments ago on cbs, face the nation, and responded to matt gaetz. He said, yes. I will survive. Referring to the motion to vacate. He believes that matt gaetz will not be successful and ousting him. He also said this is personal with matt, dialed up his rhetoric against Congressman Gaetz and he is more interest in securing tv interview than he is securing the border, but hes willing to threaten his own district with a shutdown. This is mccarthy dialing it up. And, basically, telling gaetz to bring it on. Given what happened yesterday, what is the narrative from the members we are talking to in terms of how we feel about what went down, is there a sense of accomplishment that they avoided a Government Shutdown . Or is it a sense of sort of annoyance about being in a place where they could have figured this out earlier had mccarthy just brought the clean cr to the floor weeks ago . Its more relief than anything else. Its exactly what you just described, charles. They believe that they should not have been in this place to begin with, but democrats only demand was that it be a clean Government Funding Bill if they have not reached a deal. Remember, democrats control the senate in the white house. They wont and cant simply be dictated by one group of hardliners in the house, they made that clear all along. And the key moment that paved the way for all of this was speaker mccarthys a stunning turnaround yesterday. Yesterday morning, after exiting, a Republican Congress meeting where he announced he would do something, he suggested he would never do which is glad democrats to fund the government. That was a turnaround that paved the way for rapid succession of events democrats were kind of blindsided by it. They deftly have a 71page bill and continue resolution they were supposed to vote on a minutes and they wanted to read, it scour, it make sure there was nothing sneaky in there. And they ultimately looked at it and decided that it was fine. It, was ultimately, a clean continuing resolution in the minority leader used his magic minute, that is a congressional speaker to speak for 52 minutes on the floor while democrats decided what to do. And on the other side of the capitol, behind me in the senate, there was another key moment where the minority leader, mitch mcconnell, withdrew support for his own Senate Bipartisan sea or up to kind of boost his bill. The only difference to the house and senate version, the only meaningful when i should say is the absence of ukraine aid in the house. That was mccarthys pound of flesh here. And democrats decided that they were not going to shut down the government over the issue of ukraine aid, as unhappy as they were about it so thats where things stand. And the other thing i will note here, charles, is that he just freeze, the minority leader, was asked about a potential motion to vacate yesterday. How democrats would vote. And he said that theyve not discussed it yet, and he declined to say. Now, this is important, because the simple math on the republican side is that mccarthy can lose no more than four of his members before his speakership is over, unless democrats step in and help him. Now the democrats have said they would, it would be extremely unusual for democrats to rescue a republican speaker of the house, no matter how narrow the majority is in the chamber. But that will be a question going out, to lower the threshold making it easier for him to stand the threshold. But will they do what they widely expect them to do, what any normal party would do in the House Of Representatives, which is to vote for their own leader, hakeem jeffries, to be speaker in such a situation. That was nbcs sahil cooper. And the Washington Post im sorry, we call it wasnt with us today, thats all, right well be back soon. We are gonna move forward, and joining me now is democratic representative Jasmine Crockett of texas. You may have seen her this week, but if you are unfamiliar, she represents part of dallas and she is a member of the House Oversight committee. Thank you so, much congressman crockett, for joining us. Im going to get straight to the point with you, because i have the question that a lot of people want to know from Democratic Congress members. Matt gaetz. Hes saying that he is going to bring the motion to oust the speaker. He brings that motion to the floor, it comes up for a vote, or youre voting yes or are you voting no . Listen, first of all, im going to take my cues from my leader. But let me tell you something about matt gaetz. And let me tell you something about speaker mccarthy. For once, in life, we actually agree. Matt gaetz just likes to talk. He likes yall to cover him. I mean, every time he threatens them, the media says, oh, lets see if hes really going to do it. And he gets more and more attention. He likes the attention. My deal is this. If you are going to do, it do it. But he loses all of his leverage. At the end of the day, there was no one else that has the votes. So, if he can find somebody, great. But it is not gonna be somebody further to the right. And probably, its not gonna be anybody for the to the left of them either. At the end of the day, for me, and my vote, right now, i am looking at the other speaker of the house, and that is jeffries. I appreciate. That you are a freshman congresswoman, and you are in there. This is sort of the second time this year, after the Debt Ceiling Debacle that you have seen democrats come to speaker mccarthys aide to avoid a crisis. Given that we have not seen, will you havent seen, as a member, a bunch of other speakers in terms of how they are operating, or how they are moving things, what do you think about how he is governing and house leadership, not just of his party, but of the whole house. He is not governing. And honestly, we have not really come to his aid. We have come to the aid of the American People. We put the people of our politics every single day. And so, when it came down to the shutdown, we absolutely were not going to allow the American People to feel pain, simply because you had this maga regime that is trying to exert some sort, im not even sure theyre trying to exert, to be perfectly honest. Anything other than tearing us apart as a country. So, we werent going to allow that to happen. At the same, time we were just going to take whatever they threw at us, and we made it clear what the standards needed to look like. We needed a clean sea are. And for those that dont understand, the only reason we are in this debacle in the first place is because mccarthy and the maga republicans cannot govern at all. We were supposed to be done with our homework. We have been in session for the last nine months, and they have been on able to pass their budget. They have been talking over and over and over about how we need to cut spending, yet they did not put anything up. Then there was the debt ceiling deal. And do you know who remade on it . Mccarthy. So when they say they dont trust him, that is democrats and republicans alike. No one can trust the speaker of the house. Yesterday, i spoke with your colleague, barbara, liana was talking about the notion of fairytales and happy endings. Talking about the and at thet necessarily, think along the number of different americans and members of congress, that a deal was going to get done. And we were going to get the happy ending. I dont know that we are at the happy ending yet, but weve got about 45 days until this issue comes up again. How confident argue that the deal will get done, at that point, and, what happens to the progress of that deal, should matt gaetz make good on his promise and open up another sort of election of a new speaker. How could that impact things . I have zero confidence in this republican party, that is my answer to that. Yes, we love to see other day, but unfortunately, i need people to understand that we are on an absolute rollercoaster. We have been on a rollercoaster since the session started. Everyone saw the drama that unfolded as i was attempted to be sworn in. 15 votes. Listen, we will go round and round and round. And i honestly dont know who would want to step up and deal with this republican compilation of members at this point and time. Even if someone wanted to be speaker before, i think that they would think twice after seeing all of the headache that has been caused. And honestly, we need a rule change. Mccarthy backed himself into this by saying that only took one person to come to the well and be able to make the motion. He knew then that he was in trouble, but he was willing to give up any and everything just to have this title. The one thing that the democrats will not stand for is him giving up the American People and their chance at prosperity and their chance at Real Recovery as we are still reeling from the inflationary effect that most people are feeling. Congressman crockett, dont go anywhere, you have gotten a lot of attention from Maga Faithful and everyone else after your viral moments this week that had nothing to do with the actual shutdown. I want to talk to after a quick break about your speech and what you are talking about in your comments during the Impeachment Inquiry into President Biden this week. Stay right here on velshi, you are watching msnbc, i am Charles Coleman junior, we will be right back. Be right back. Liberty mutual customized my Car Insurance and i saved hundreds. With the money i saved, i started a dog walking business. Oh. [dog barks] no its just a bunny only pay for what you need. Liberty. Liberty. Liberty. Liberty. Try killing bugs the worryfree way. Not the other way. Zevo traps use light to attract and trap flying insects with no odor and no mess. They work continuously, so you dont have to. Zevo. Peoplefriendly. Bugdeadly. This is Spring Semester at fairfieldsuisun unified. As i prepared, i said, what they switched to google tools for education because theres never been a reported Ransomware Attack on a chromebook. Now theyre focused on learning knowing that their data is secure. is the crime . When youre talking about impeachment, youre talking about high crimes or misdemeanors. I cant seem to find the crime. Honestly, known has testified of what crime they believe the president of the United States has committed. When we Start Talking about things that look like evidence, they want to act like theyre blind, they dont know this is, these are National Secrets, looks like bleep to me. This looks like more evidence of our National Secrets, say, on the stage at maralago. That was a blistering and masterful takedown that has now become, as im sure you can imagine, a viral sensation by Democratic Congresswoman, Jasmine Crockett. This occurred during the House RepublicanImpeachment Inquiry into President Bidens son, hunter biden, his foreign Business Dealings where crockett called out republicans for showing up with no direct evidence to support their allegations against the president , while also ignoring the mountain of evidence in charges against former president donald trump. Congresswoman crockett joins me now. I have to start with the notion of, there is a couple of things, maam, maam, madam congresswoman, you are a fresh member who walked up to those people, their Impeachment Cory, and you did all of that. Number one, kudos to you for representing your constituents as best you can in doing that, not necessarily for the likes therefore going viral, but because its what you were convicted to do, i would imagine. What are you hearing from your constituents in the wake of, here in texas, a red state, here in a blue district, what are you hearing from your constituents generally about, not that moment, but the notion of republicans Impeachment Cory into the president . I dont think my constituency is paying that much attention to the impeachment in and of itself. This was more like the republicans were trying to, you know, make sure they can attribute their followers. I can tell you my constituents are well aware of my advocacy now. They have been off the chain excited. Theyve been, not necessarily about the word itself, ive had a number of preachers that have reached out and said something to me. We have been excited about my passion. Its the passion they bring to this committee every single day, its a passion they bring to this job in general. You know, im not here to play games. The reality is that we have people that are struggling, suffering in this country, and then we have people that want to pander and pretend that theyre the ones that are gonna look out for the economic wellbeing of this country, what the same time, doing something thats completely opposite of what it is theyre saying. So, yeah, i was frustrated, honestly, i think the majority of the americans that have reached out and have been excited about this moment, more so excited because they felt the same type of frustration as they watched our country fall part. They were happy to see that someones actually sitting in a position of power, displaying that same level of passion. Before you when elected official, you are a civil rights attorney and a public defender. I like to take my glasses off when i talk to lawyers. We can keep it straight, the eye to eye. You did something that was very interesting in the remarks. You juxtapose this conversation, this inquiry around hunter biden, joe biden, the president , and what may or may not be there in terms of evidence against hard evidence that weve seen from the doj and donald trump, and his prosecutions around maralago and the documents case. Why did you choose to do it that way . What was the significance for putting those two things and contrast together at the Impeachment Hearing . The entire time ive been sitting on oversight, weve continually pointed out hypocrisy. This wasnt me calling them hypocrites without calling them hypocrites, right . Instead of saying, yall are hypocrites, i decided to show what this hypocrisy looks like. There is all this evidence against the president , yet, they had, they really mention the president s name in this inquiry. They didnt bring any witnesses, the witnesses they did bring didnt think the evidence they had heard or the lack thereof leading up to this hearing, they dont think they even had enough. Your own witnesses, why are we wasting our time as the clock is counting down, this is what Kevin Mccarthy shouldve been reaching across the aisle, we shouldnt embedded waiting till the last hour as people are struggling. If you say you care about Border Security and National Security, you say a lot of things, thats what i need the American People understand. The republicans talk the best game, i mean, theyre like, theyre definitely the masters of the quran. They talk a, they talk a, and at the end of the day, they never ever deliver. Thats the exact same thing in this. The fact they continually ignore the 91 indictments that are against the former president , they continue to say there is nothing to see here, we can all see with our eyes, if for some reason we believe the National Security and National Secrets are a problematic theme, and he somehow is and possession of those items, its a bigger issue then the president having a drug addicted son who maybe had fishy dealings of some sort. Honestly, he is not even been charged for any of his Business Dealings at this point either. The leaps they will jump through in the hopes they jump through just to try to impeach our president , its laughable and unfortunately for them, an impeachment is not a laughable situation. If they decide they want to continue to go down this road, i need them to understand that will be ready and well be Clapping Back. Well be Clapping Back indeed, well be watching. That was texas congresswoman, Jasmine Crockett. Thank you for getting up in spending sunday with us on velshi. There was one group of farright republicans who went out of their way to try and enforce the shutdown of the government. They were taking their direction from House SpeakerKevin Mccarthy. Im Charles Coleman jr. , sitting in for ali this morning. Its no secret which faction of the house one of the Government Shutdown. The maga wing of republicans had the support of the De Facto Leader, donald trump. Trump stepped in and called on his loyalists in the house to let the Government Shutdown, in part to try and freeze the criminal proceedings against him. On september 21st, trump posted to truth social, saying in part, quote, this is also the last chance to defund these political prosecutions against me and other patriots, and quote. Heres time for a quick factchecked. Criminal federal proceedings are exempt from shutdowns. Even with that knowledge, it didnt stop him from trying. In the end, how speaker Kevin Mccarthy passed a Stopgap Funding Measure with the help of democrats and avoided a shut down for now. For that, he just might face an untimely end to a speakership. Republican congressman, matt gaetz, now says he intends to file a motion to vacate mccarthy from the speakership this week. Mccarthy spoke out just this morning from cbs news. Lets take a listen. He says hes coming for you, can you survive . Yes, all survive, this is personal with matt. Matt voted against the most conservative ability to protect our border, secure our border. He is more interested in securing Tv Interviews than doing something. He wanted to push us into a shut down, even threatening his own district with all the military people there who would not be paid, only because he wants to take this motion. So, bring it on, lets get it over with, lets start governing. Bring it on, thats really tough talk. Lets unpack this all with jennifer reuben, an Opinion Writer at the Washington Post, an msnbc political analyst, and the host of the podcast, jen rubins green room. Jen, so glad to have you with us. Gaetz is trying to now outsmart the is the speaker. Mccarthy says its not gonna happen, bring it on. I want your prediction here. If youre thinking that gaetz may be successful, who is the replacement as the speaker . Well, thats exactly the rub because republicans have never figured out who is gonna take his spot, who can get a majority. Gaetz can take this vote, they can go through 15 or 20 more rounds of voting. Who actually commands a majority of the house, thats the unanimity needed on the republican side, minus a couple defections, in order to have a new speaker. Ive gotta say, there is one person whos responsible for the state of affairs, thats Kevin Mccarthy. He has brought this on. He was the one for weeks and weeks and weeks threatening to shut down the government. He couldve made the steel a month ago or two months ago, relying on democratic votes. He is so weak, hes so spineless, he continually tries to keep these people at bay. All it does is encourage them to do more. Now, hes in a position where he will have gained nothing, hell have achieved nothing. And he may lose his speakership. Gets the worst of all possible, its appropriate, hes the worst of all speakers. At this point, i dont have a prediction about which way its gonna go. Frankly, it doesnt make any difference because any person in that position is gonna be tied up in knots. Anyone in that position is gonna beholden to donald trump. This is what you get from republicans. If americans are sick of us, if americans think this is worse than a joke, its dangerous and responsible, come 2024, or they should vote these people out overwhelmingly. Perhaps some more Reasonable Republicans will rise to take place. Okay, jennifer, i have a pop quiz for you. This is sunday, were gonna have a little fun here. Were not doing the times crossword, but we are gonna have a little bit of a quiz. Minus at this stage, gaetz moves to outsmart car there. That conversation builds, now, we have another huge round of trying to elect a new speaker. We have 45 days until congress has to figure out a way to continue to keep the government open. All of this happens, whos the biggest loser . This is a multiple choice, a multiple choice quiz. All right, who is the biggest loser here . Is it Kevin Mccarthy . Is that matt gaetz . Is that congress as a whole . Is that the American Public . Or is it all of the above . Its not congress as a whole. You have many functioning parts of congress. The democrats and the House Of Representatives has done a remarkably good job in terms of unity, sticking to their half of the deal, which was part of the debt ceiling negotiations, theyre functioning fine. The senate democrats, they could be more aggressive, could actually be investigating people like jared kushner. Theyre functioning fine. Yes, the American People it is when this happens but thankfully because of responsible democrats, the government remains open. In fact, theyre gonna come back this week and likely fill in the hole and continue ukraine spending. Apparently was the one thing that republicans could not bear to do this time since theres so beholden to vladimir putin. I think the loser overall was the entire Maga Movement, Kevin Mccarthy, all of the followers, or whether its donald trump. Still has pending against him. His great plan to shut down the government was ridiculous from the start because, as your point, out criminal prosecutions go ahead. Hes still where he was. And come monday, his trial starts in the civil trial in new york. It will result perhaps and him losing the ability to do business and a great number of those iconic buildings he loves to talk about so much in new york. He is really in trouble. If there is a i hope its the Maga Movement and the American People are rising up to what these people bring, which is chaos, dysfunction, recklessness, chaos. Jennifer reuben, thank you, as always, for your insight. Lovely conversation. You passed the pop quiz. Congratulations. Thank you. In the meantime, an expensive new survey of Black Americans as revealing widespread dissatisfaction with how they themselves are portrayed it is media. The study, it was just released by the pew research center, shows one of the 5000 black adults polled, 63 of them, thats not just half, thats nearly two thirds, they say the news they see or hear about black people is more negative than other racial or ethnic groups. Furthermore, the Study Reveals that 80 of black folks say that they see racist or racially insensitive depictions of their race in the news either often or sometimes. Notably, despite current levels of highly political polarization, what study found democrats and republicans are critical of how black people are covered in the media. To that point, 59 of black democrats and 55 of black republicans both agree that the news they see it their demographic is negative and only cover certain segments of the black community. Thats clearly a problem, it needs to be solved. One possible solution, according to those polls, is educating all journalists about issues impacting black people and our history. Lets unpack this. Im super excited about this conversation, quite frankly. Im joined by White House Bureau chief and correspondent for the she is also an msnbc contributor. With us is also renee graham, Opinion Columnist and Associate Editor for the boston globe. Thank you both for being here. April, i was talking about the fact that 63 of Black Americans say black News Coverage is more negative than other groups and 80 report sometimes seeing coverage that they deem as racist. Youre someone whos been in media, so many different perspectives, platforms, and outlets, you understand this industry inside and out. How do you react to that statistic . Charles, first of all, it cuts with a double edged sword for me. Ive heard these unscientific opinions, the scientific opinion from key research over the years. It takes this Mainstream Organization for people to really listen and understand. Yes, indian, as a journalist, i would give you some anecdotes, as a journalist who happens to be black, many times i asked questions, theyll brush them aside. When i ask questions about black america, still has the highest numbers of negatives in almost every category, im considered a racebaiter. There is so many different complexities as we deal with recording on black america. The issue of black america was and still is brush to the side. When you want the truth, you know, its like, oh, whatever. This pew study is amazing. Im glad it happened. But its sad that it took Mainstream Organization to put an Exclamation Point on something that black people have been sounding the bell on for centuries. April, i want to stay with you for a second, its one thing to talk about the publics perception of the news and what theyre saying but i want to go within the industry. As a journalist, as a journalist who happens to be black, there has been advocacy across different newsrooms and on different platforms, Media Outlets for more diverse news rooms that actually understand how to tell stories about community. What has been the resistance, despite the advocacy from groups like and others have tried to diversify newsrooms. Can you talk about the need for that and the importance and how we get to an outcome like were talking here with the study . The importance of having people look like me in the newsrooms helps give texture to a story and the history that the study was talking about, a lot of people dont understand, you know, the issue of lynching. We heard about the issue of george floyd, they did understand what lynching was, and the history of lynching until, oh, wait a minute, we get this and it till antilynching act. In my home, as a black person, i was hearing these stories, these oral traditions of the horrors, even the successes that are in our communities. When we come into a newsroom, we understand a lot of times what our mainstream cohorts did not hear about, you know, did not even here, for instance, black wall street. Weve been hearing, as black people, about black wall street for a long time. In the last couple of years, oh my god, this really happened. We, as black people, we have to learn mainstream news. We have to, to do the story, even five times, ten times better than their counterparts. Yet, when it comes to our news, they send it to us. They dont take the time, mainstream newsrooms dont take the time to learn the history. Its rich, its real, and its still a community, highest a reserve negatives on almost every category. Those facts rene, i want to shift to the political lens for a second. Typically republicans and democrats do not agree in terms of matters of race and how things are depicted. Yet, the study says that a majority of people and either party are in agreement about how we are depicted in the news. What does that tell you about the results and about the notion of this being a nonpartisan, a political issue that were dealing with . Well, charles, i think it tells us how egregious the coverage has been. If there is no political divide in terms of how republicans or democrats say the coverage. I think what hit me when i first saw the result, the fact were talking about almost 60 years since the current which looked at this. We talked about how Much Negative coverage there was in black communities. Almost 30 years later, im a young reporter, and every time we get sent to the black community, its for murder, its for gang violence. As i talk to communities, they would always say, where have you been . How come you never hear . How come you only come when there is a murder . They were right. Here we are now, 30 years after that with the same problems. It says something about the way that the industry is not changing. I think the industry looks at these issues, i think they try to open up some of these issues in 2020 after the murder of george floyd. Newspapers, like the kansas city star, and The Philadelphian did these indepth examinations of what they were doing and how their coverage impacted what communities. I dont know that that has yet translated into a real difference in what newsrooms look like, who are making these decisions, and who ends up, especially, sources, who is sourced and these stories . You know, its sunday. Every time im Guest Hosting on a sunday, someone decides to get on a panel and start preaching. I want both of you to stay with me. Were gonna continue this conversation just after the short commercial break. Commercial break in just a few clicks. And well come to you with a replacement you can trust. Man looks great. Back with me, april ryan, White House Bureau chief and correspondent for and renee graham, Associate Editor and Opinion Columnist for the boston globe. In april, you had something you wanted to expand upon reminisce last answer. Yeah, yeah, rene was a minute ago, shedding light on dark spaces on the current condition. Lets talk about that, dig into a little bit. In 1960, lbj commissioned a panel to deal with the issues in the black community, we have these powderkeg moments in the communities, right . In 1968, and involved policing. Heres the thing, towards the end of the report, section 15, way at the back, it talked about having black reporters in the white house, in the state house, and every high space to give information to defuse the current tensions at that time. Not in the numbers we should be, but we are there. Still, we have all of this misinformation. Were trying to get news, like lake after american, all of these papers are trying to do it when blacks and media turner working their way, and when black media are trying to give the positive, as well as negatives, and the facts to give understanding. So, there was something by a president to help get us there. President nixon, came it was axed. April, when you talk about that current report, youre talking about doing your homework. Thats something that is a civil rights attorney ive been using as a model to understand where we are and where weve been for decades. I think its important that we are continuing to draw from that. So, shout out to rene for bringing it up. Shout out to you for continuing it. Forever nelson formally, or this is something that you should check out because the remains relevant. Speaking of relevance, rene, were looking at a very very costly election thats coming up. A lot on the line. Do you think, politically, that either or both parties has a duty with respect to its messaging to sort of tether themselves to media to make sure that the narrative around what is going on in black america is not only authentic but also on point . Where do you think its a matter of benefit versus, you know, detriment . I think its the responsibility of the media to define what is going on. Thats not really the job of the republican or democratic party. The job of the media is to decipher whats going on, to parse out what is truth from nonsense. You have to really do that. We dont want to replay, and rightly seeing bits of that, by the way, with what we saw in 2016 when the media, in many ways, refused to call a thing nothing, they would not call a racist candidate like donald trump raised his candidate. I think thats the job of the media. Thats the job we serve to the public. So, when we fail in that job, were not really doing journalism, what were doing is spreading propaganda. April ryan and renee graham. Thank you both so much for such a strong panel and such an important conversation. Thats gonna do it for me this weekend. Im Charles Coleman junior.
