Prepares to present her case to a grand jury. Joyce vance and, Greg Bluestein are here to break down the latest developments. And fair game. Nearly all of the gops 2024 candidates flock to the Iowa State Fair. But can any of them catch donald trump, who is dominating the polls and still defiant, despite his mounting legal troubles . All of this and much more coming up right now. Cote i and a good Sunday Morning to you all. I am katie phang. The devastating wildfires in maui are now officially the deadliest in modern u. S. History. As of this morning, officials confirmed the death toll has risen to 93. And the number is still expected to climb, with hundreds still missing. The active lahaina fire, and a second fire in kaanapali, have burned down many of the islands historic landmarks, in westmount, 2200 structures have been destroyed or damaged. Most of them residential. Why governor josh greenest of the losses have reached an estimated Six Billion Dollars so far. And as Search And Rescue efforts continue, National Guardsmen half a arrived, and hotel rooms are being secured for displaced families. Nbc news correspondent Steve Patterson joins us now live from an Evacuation Center in maui. Steve, i know its early over there. I am grateful for you to join us. Tell us, what is the latest on the ground with a Search And Rescue efforts . Yeah, unfortunately, katie, i think this is really becoming a fast Search Rescue and recovery effort. Though officials are saying that the recovery is still desperate, they are locked in it. They are doing everything they can to shift through that wreckage, which is just so immense. And, suffice to say, still 1000 people maybe unaccounted for. We dont have an official list, but it may be even higher than that. Fear to be missing, feared to be dead, with resources pouring in all over the country. Fema just sent over 150 personnel, including 150 rescue teams. That is on top of dozens in agencies all walked again in this eighth effort, locked in this relief effort, and locked in this Search And Rescue. But i did mention recovery. Cadaver dogs are now searching through this record. The stunning thing is just how stunning they have started with and how far they have to go. Of estimated that theyve maybe done maybe 3 of that entire wreckage. So just a match in, with the death count where it is, by the time that number may be. It is tragic and horrific to think about. On top of other questions and response here, there is not gonna be a states attorney general investigation into how exactly Emergency Responders and officials were doing at the time these fires broke out. There is some questions about where certain officials were. There are questions about the siren system. The most sophisticated siren system, according to a lot of people here, in the entire world. 400 sirens set up along the entire island chain, and nobody heard them because they did not go off. State officials admit that. So the question is why, and when those tests killers one out, and tv alert went out, and radio alert went out, why wasnt accounted for four people without power . I think that is part of the investigation, but for now, this crew is doing the best they can to find and located many people. That still might be missing. Katie . Yeah, Steve Patterson. Thanks again for getting us started and for sharing what you are doing what you are seeing over there. We appreciate you. Later on The Sunday Show with Jonathan Capehart, Hawaii Governor josh green will join him to talk about how they are responding to what is now the deadliest wildfire in modern history. That is gonna come up on 9 am eastern on The Sunday Show with Jonathan Capehart right here on msnbc. Right now were gonna turn to Donald Trumps moment of reckoning in georgia. The already thrice indicted former president could be days away from his fourth indictment. As early as tomorrow, Fulton County d. A. , fani willis, is expected to present to a grand jury her case regarding trumps efforts and georgias 2020 election results. So far, former georgia lieutenant governor, george duncan, and george, deede had been called to testify before the grand jury on tuesday. D to we are learning more abot the scope of the investigation, according to an exclusive report in the guardian. Fani williams has enough evidence to charge multiple trump allies who are allegedly involved in breaching Voting Machines in the state. And while trump awaits that possible fourth indictment, security is tightening around the Fulton County courthouse in atlanta with metal barriers and bomb sniffing dogs. Joining us now, is joyce vance, msnbc legal analyst. Former u. S. Attorney in alabama, professor of Law University of Alabama School of emma, and the cohost of the hashtag sistersinlaw podcast. We have Greg Bluestein, msnbc political correspondent, political reporter at the atlanta constitution, and the author of the book flipped. Thanks to both of you for getting us started. Joyce, i would like to start with you. You just released an excellent substack piece on georges we go statue. There is been a lot of discussion about that. Bring us through, very quickly, joyce, the top ideas of georgias rico statue and how you in that Gym It Fitting in based upon the facts you know publicly. So georges rico statute, which is a little bit broader than the federal statue, but they operate the same way, permits prosecutors to go after everyone involved in a criminal enterprise. The origin was mafia. We are people at the top didnt touch the merchandise. Infamously, people involved in trafficking knew or thought that if they didnt touch the drugs, they couldnt be charged. And but enter, oh told everyone involved in the illegal enterprising accountable. And the use of that law has expanded. Fani willis was personally involved in a georgia prosecution that looked at Education Officials who were involved in a score rigging scandal. So there is this enhanced use of it for organizations. That is precisely how willis appears to be viewing the people who are around efforts in georgia to cheat in the election in 2020 and steal the election after trump lost. Greg, im glad that joyce brought up that prior prosecution by d. A. Fani willis. That was a 2020 prosecution of 12 atlanta educators, as joyce explained, had to do with a rigging scandal. But there was a lot of criticism over williss use of georgias rico statute to be able to prosecute educators. In this particular instance, greg, they havent applied rico to an election law framework. And so there is a concern the three might be similar criticism if that particular statute is used by fani willis to go after trump and his allies . Yeah, there will be pushed back on her no matter what she does. But look. She is an expert in using this rico statute. She is even joked that, look, you should just use rico statute for folks eating spaghetti dinners in a crowded ballroom. This is a rico statute that can be used against street gangs and has been successfully used against public administrators in the cheating scandal. And if all signs to this going on in the next couple days, it could be used against the former president and allies in terms of their efforts to overturn or undermine the election in 2020 in georgia. Joyce, i had a professor from george on yesterday, Anthony Michael crisis and, and i asked him june vision one large indictment with trump and several codefendants, or several slow small indictments that i should go after trump and other codefendants . How complicated is judicial process become if we are looking at one indictment, big, huge, broad strong indictment with donald trump any bunch of codefendants . It is legally complicated to have that one big indictment, but it is also complicated in practical ways. How do you get all of the defendants and their lawyers into the courtroom . Is one of the issues that always comes up in multiple defendant cases. So there are possibilities here. I think we dont know for certain, there are indications that willis is headed into one big indictment. You could also envision her breaking this down into perhaps an internal georgia indictment involving the fake electors scheme, and an external one involving the pressure. But we know that the complications start very early on. In a big case, we saw that trumps indictment involving maralago where there were delays as codefendants struggled to find local council. And the delays just magnify from that point on and outward. These stasis cases take a long time to try, the Longest Casey never went to trial in the history of the state of georgia was a r. I. C. O. Case, lots of complexity baked into the cake with these charges. Greg, you could forgive your reporting as well, as you said at the beginning of this segment, that at least two witnesses have confirmed what they have been subpoenaed to appear in front of the grand jury and give testimony on tuesday. But that doesnt necessarily mean that fani willis wont begin presenting her case with the use of witnesses as early as tomorrow, is that right . Thats exactly right. We expected to begin presenting the case for the use of grand jury witnesses and other investigative testimony, beginning monday. And that means we have an announcement as soon as on the record, theyll be speaking to the grand jurors Behind Closed Doors on tuesday. We have not heard from the other grand jury witness has yet, on the record at least. But we do expect the testimony to begin tomorrow. Joyce and craig are gonna be sticking around for all of us. So for those of you out there, just go anywhere. Because weve got much more of the Katie Phang Show right after a quick break. K. Joyce vance and Greg Bluestein sticking with me for more on what is at stake for former president Donald Trumps legal future in georgia. Joyce, i wanna go back to you again. Lets talk about the fact that trump continues to appeal a decision made by drug judge mcburney in terms of removing fani willis from that case, from that prosecution, as well as the release of that Special Grand Jury report. Turning about the outcome of that appeal, would that necessarily impact the prosecution of donald trump and others if the grand jury does return a true bill on tuesday against him and the other codefendants . First, off katie, i think that effort by trumps all but a dead letter. Its been rejected by georgia judges up to this point. There is no merit to the suggestion. This is just the typical trump bluster. Everyone is against him. Its a witch hunt. Its not going anywhere. But even if it did, its impact would be very limited. He has really two arguments. One is that fani willis cant participate in the prosecution. And in the extraordinarily unlikely case that that request were to be granted, she would simply be replaced with another prosecutor. The other part of trumps argument, although completely meritless, is incredibly more complicated, it involves suppressing the work of the investigative grand jury to its entirely unprecedented. It is just impossible to contemplate a world where it would be granted. But even then, that does nothing to undercut the existence of the evidence itself, the facts itself, it would force prosecutors to jump through some hoops in a world where that motion was granted. Greg, weve seen a Marquee Lineup of witnesses that were either subpoenaed or voluntarily appeared or fought Like Cats And Dogs against a system to do so. If they run the gamut from Lindsey Graham to brad raffensperger, et cetera. And even mark meadows. Based upon you reporting and from what you know, being the boots on the ground in atlanta. Who do actually anticipate being recognizable codefendants of donald trump in the event the bills returned . It is still very, very much up in the air. In the do expect what we know about 20 target letters, about 20 letters have been sent to potential has been sent to this potential investigation, including members of the fake elector core, including the former gop, including Rudy Giuliani, john eastman, other architects of the legal scheme to overturn that here in georgia. And including other allies of the former president. So weve heard all sorts of numbers out there, including many indictments could be in the criminal indictment, we are expecting several of the top allies to receive, to release the scrutiny under the legal microscope as early as this tuesday. Joyce, we brought up the name Rudy Giuliani, as greg. Did how complicated to this things get, lets noodle this for a hot second. Rudy giuliani is identified as a Coconspirator Unindicted in the federal case its been brought by special counsel jack smith for the 2020 Election Interference that donald trump did. That case is currently pending. What happens if Rudy Giuliani actually ends up being a codefendant in the Fulton County case with donald trump . Its a complicated situation, but there was nothing that prevents willis from Indicting Giuliani or anyone else. And to gregs point about shifting numbers here, this is the time for and games. And there are people in georgia who, this weekend, or having to decide. Through want to be a witness, or do i want to be a defendant. So willis herself may not know precisely how many people and who shes indicting, until the Weekends Bargaining is done. She may pick up another few cooperators along the way. That has always been a big question with Rudy Giuliani. It is tough to put him on the Witness Stand that, at this point, hes done so much to undercut his own credibility, that it would be difficult to ask a jury to believe him. But if his testimony, if he were to cooperate, would be backed up by others, and by documentation, then he could be a powerful witness in some ways. There is though, no indication that he has gone on board with fani willis or anyone else. And he could well be a defendant when he sees this indictment unsealed. Joyce, vance Greg Bluestein, thanks for getting us started. Greg, ill see you in atlanta in a few hours, basically. Thanks, guys. For getting us started. He still continues to say that the election was stolen, even repeating that lie this week in the iowa. Take a very quick listen to this exchange with nbc news correspondent vaughn hillyard. President , trump did you intend to overturn the 2020 election . You know the answer to that. I mean, erin, hes been indicted now. Hes been indicted by the federal government for his role in 2020 Election Interference. Are going to wait to stop the debate stage to see any of his opponents versus these Milquetoast Wipes that were coming during some Media Interviews . I mean, look, katie. Lets try to manage his expectations here. There are still 449 days. Lets just remind folks that there is still a lot of time left. Youre right, this election is not gonna be like any other election weve seen, can donald trump play this into the on precedent politics . We do have a president ial fan base who is a defendant in multiple criminal trials bouncing from the Campaign Trail to the courtroom. We dont know if hes gonna take the debate stage in an Interview Scenario for his potential Vice President ial picks. And his space very much seems to be written particularly because of his legal challenges. Lucy, youve dealt with president ial campaigns before. The first gop debate is just around the corner. If trump participates, and thats a big if, defended trump could face off against his former Vice President mike pence, who was a witness in the January 6th Case against him. What would you actually advise, on the come your, client, at the time him in this unprecedented scenario . If mike pence for my client i wouldve been fired as his consult along time ago because we agree on nothing about mike pences strategy. On january 7th, 2021, mike pence had a couple of options. One was to recede from the public view, another was to double down on it being serious and asking people to take seriously what has just transpired, and instead of doing that he kind of waffled and now he sort of anti trump, kind of not, but you know. Joe biden is bad. So dont expect mike pence to find new courage. The problem on the debate stage, and there are a few problems, one of them is that its going to be moderated by fox anchors. So i dont think that the kind of question that we want to see happen where the kind of moments we like to see happen between those candidates. Its going up on that stage. The other problem is, none of these candidates, with the exception of Chris Christie is running against trump. They are all running against each other. So they are actually mostly spending their time trying to show that they are more loyal than the other. And pandering to him. So it will be a more interesting debate if he is on in some ways, but in other ways, if hes on, its just going to be the kind of odd spectacle of people running for second place. I dont think they take me up on the offer, but i would be happy to moderate that gop debate if they would take me. Aaron, youve got the chance to sit down with Education Secretary last week. The administration has been very vocal in confronting the gop for its were on woke, including ron desantis, who is way far back in second place and polling right now. And the war on woke detrimental impact specifically in states like florida, how critical is that education going before the 2024 election on both sides of the aisle . Yeah, well, katie. Thank you for mentioning that interview. Secretary cardona in the new newsletter and on the 19th website, we had a robust conversation, and a temperature in cardona is one that we havent necessarily seen a ton of in the last three years. I think, increasingly, as the gop continues to bring the history, and have a Supreme Court cessation of Affirmative Action on student loan debt, it has really gone increasingly and often with voters who are going to be impacted by these decisions, and by this rhetoric, by this policy. I think that that accompaniment that we are going to see even more now as we head into 2024, because education is on the ballot. Which voters, which parents, which writes we are talking about that are feeling threatened. And i think that is a huge difference. They are feeling under attack in this moment, so really, hearing from the highest profile, leader on education in this country is something that certainly a lot of the progressive groups on education have said that they are wanting to see, and that it is something that theyre willing to choose more and more. Lucy, approximately 75 , that is a very big number, of the individuals who previously contributed 50,000 or more to trump super pacs have not donated it to super pac so far to super pacs supporting any individual candidate. In fact, one prior super packed trump donor has given to four of trumps rivals. We all know, money makes the world go around. What does this say about trumps true liability here . I think it says anything about liability. For one, thing wait until trump is the nominee. Youre going to see all of those republican megadonors who wish for something, theyre all gonna come home to trump once hes the nominee. Its a phenomenon to see every cycle, its a phenomenon that we see with big players in the republican space. Folks like the coconut work, others who prefer someone else to get through the primary, maybe theyd like to get away or like to see tim scott, but when they see donald trump is the nominee, they will back, and perhaps with our nose plucked. Trump is going gangbusters with a small dollar donors, and sometimes that brings a questionable reputation about what the impact of small dollar donations is. I know everyone thinks it is wonderful. In fact, in trumps case, is not so wonderful. It is a cold activation machine, so after each indictment, he is continue to raise tons of money. He will continue to. So i think its as much about is viability at all, remember also, republican primary, that reflects a very, very small number of voters. Not only do very few americans even participate in president ial primaries, you would be lucky to tap out at like 10 of voters of americans any president ial primary. So he is working right now to curry favor with people like republican primary voters in iowa who will go to the polls by showing up on a Cold Winter Night in iowa, to caucus night in some Middle School gym, where you sit for hours listening to Rabbit Champagne talk about why this would support their candidates. We are not currying favor with your average american right now. I think he is very viable, and thats because he is viable in these dynamics. The maybe he needs to bust out the karaoke that we saw him doing. Around a time, ladies. I wanted to do the stuff. But i couldnt. I will have you guys back so we can have you guys break that down to maybe give not the golden buzzer. Lucy caldwell, erin haines, thanks for joining me today. And still to come after the break. A new investigation involving more than a dozen international Law Enforcement organizations has successfully identified hundreds of victims of Sexual Exploitation and what is being called one of the most successful operations of its kind. According to nbc news reporting, quote, in the threeweek surge known as operation renewed hope, which begin july 17th, investigators comb their sexually graphic Internet Material involving children, much of it on the dark web, and some of it decades old, made probable identifications of 311 child victims and confirmed the rescue of several victims from active abuse. Investigators credit facial recognition and Artificial Intelligence technology for opening fresh leads into these cases. Joining me now is rob damico, former member of the Fbi Hostage Rescue Team and the founder of sierra one consulting. Rob, this is fantastic news and this operation was unique due to all of these International Agencies coming together in order to gather leads. But what goes into an operation of this grand scale . When you are looking at ops that are this big and trying to coordinate all the different Law Enforcements, so you start arresting people and it will get out across the dark web, they will start the highs, they will start to really cover their tracks. Because they dont coordinating that to happen at the same time across the law is really difficult. Lets talk about how facial recognition on Artificial Intelligence technology was used in this particular instance. Can you kind of explain to our viewers how that was deployed and weather not promising that more cold cases can be opened and solved . Youre starting to see technology that actually has been used. Cross Intelligence Committee in the Spine Community to now to criminal cases. Because you dont keep, it because you dont have these other countries have. It but as it gets more comment, then it comes over to the criminal side of what you can start using as gun shop in court. So as facial that data sets out there of the amount of information that can search and then spot. So you can have one face that you recognize, and then i can be looking at all these other vehicles and saying where else did you see it. And then you can start tagging things like location. They talk about the article about hearing burns out and what kind of birds that and where is it located . And then you can send that lead to the country that may have that bird. Those things were used before, but it is very covert on the side, and now you are starting to see it on the criminal side. Last week as well, rob, a separate operation named operation across the country. The fbi found dozens of Sex Trafficking Victims and more than 100 suspects in a twoweeklong sweep. How prevalent is child Sexual Exploitation in Human Trafficking in our United States . It actually is. Operation crosscountry started i think in 2008. Its been running a long time. Theres been over almost 7000 victims recovered from those operations. They do a yearly. It is just a snapshot of what is going on because its going everywhere. You hear about it a big events, we actually started seeing across an entire country. And whats really dangerous, some of the victims dont even identify as victims. They see themselves better than what they came from, and they get a stockholm syndrome, and they get manipulated into thinking that they have a better life. So it is a very tough one, but it is very important. An operation Like Operation renewed hope, authorities are locating now adults. Adults who were abused as children. How important has it been for the provision of resources, and things like counseling to those victims in situations like this . Its huge. I remember when i first joined the fbi, we had maybe four or five people in our victims unit. Victims is now an entire division, because what we have is a responsibility to provide counseling to help with federal crimes. So it goes back into, if you cant help the victim, again, they fall back into it. I know one agents recovered a woman, a girl, six times from the same type of things. But you have to get them in counseling. You have to really start understanding what you need, you have to do the interviewing and stuff. That goes across all federal agencies. So helping them after is really big. It takes a lot of resources. You know, rob, earlier this week Australian Police were announcing 19 men arrested on charges of sharing Child Abuse Material online, and 13 children rescued from further harm. But they worked in a joint operation with the fbi. How critical is International Cooperation in the pursuit of offenders as well as helping we cover and save victims . The International Side is huge. And all of these agencies that have these resources Work Together hand and hand, we first are getting into international Law Enforcement i think with Organized Crime but everyone hides between borders so they know that if theyre doing things that happen on a server in the u. S. In australia they know the rules just as well as we do and they try to play by them so i mean phone calls these Police Officers go to conferences all the time together they know each other by name and they can just pick up a phone and say hey i think this once in your area, and heres intel that im getting and then they can start putting down early it is unbelievable what they can do because we have to be better than them. Guys, lets not scare her off before shes even started. The new hit movie, shortcomings, does not shy away from complexity. The comedy takes on issues like representation, modern dating, and struggles with racial identity, all while delivering class. And laughs. I really have the chance to talk with actor and director randall park, who i would like to know, did receive permission to talk about his critically acclaimed directorial debut amid the sagaftra strike. And joining me now, the director and producer of the new film, shortcomings, randall park. Randall, its an honor to have you join my show. You are no stranger to being in front of the camera. But this is your directorial debut. What made you actually want to get behind the camera to make this particular movie . Well this was a originally a Graphic Novel that came out back in 2007. I remember when i first read the Graphic Novel, i was just blown away at how real it felt. How complex the characters were and how much it kind of reflected my own life at the time, and the lives of myself and my friends. So it just felt like a special authenticity in that way, and ever since i read, it ive always wanted to make something of it. And its incredible that 15 years later i directed the Feature Version of shortcomings. So we are not going to give away any spoilers because we obviously want everyone to go and watch the movie, but i think a couple of adjectives to describe this movie would be, messy and complicated. So look. You and i both are Asian Americans. Messy and complicated, definitely not the Model Minority that asians are stereotypically branded as being. So why was it important for you, not only being in the movie, directing the movie, why was so important for you to avoid cliches and stereotypes and saying, you know, what were just gonna let all hang out there . Well, you know. I hear the words messy and complicated and i equate that with being human. And that is the thing i love about these characters. They are so human and flawed, but trying their best. And i think that, you know, i can see myself in each of these characters, and i can recognize my own flaws and my own shortcomings, and i dont know. I think it is really important for us to just kind of present ourselves as we are. And it is good to have perfect portrayals as well, and heroes, and Beautiful People on screen. But i also think it is important to kind of expand on that and show people in our own complicated glory for. You talk about heroes. We also know you from the d. C. Comic and marvel universe. But you are a part of, id say, a wave and a pretty new one of Asian American representation in hollywood. Im going to loop into that group with you the actors that have been in movies like everything, everywhere all at once, and even crazy rich asians and joyride. These are all the movies that are definitely taking center stage in terms of api representation. But look, do you think movies like crazy, rich asians, actually had to walk so that movies like shortcomings and even joyride could run . Thats a great question, and i think there is a direct lineage. I see the connection. I dont think there would be either of those movies without the success of crazy, rich asians. And, you know, i could take it back even further to movies like the joy luck club, and saving face, and better luck tomorrow, and chan is missing. There is a long history of Asian American film making, and i just feel like we are just a part of that lineage. As i was preparing to spend this time with you, randall, i actually read that youve gone into or discovered meditation as a way to be able to kind of center yourself and kind of get a handle on the insanity, i think, that ends up being your life with the acting and the directing. Can you talk about why you think that is important for you, and why you think making sure that your Mental Health and making sure that you are the best you is the way that you end up creating some of the most amazing product that youve done . I wasnt expecting this question, this is a good one. And it is very important to me. Its just, that you know. For me, its not just my career, but just Life In General can get overwhelming at times, and it is always good for me to just bring it back to a small place and to center myself, and to focus on my breath, and to me, it is the most simple and clear way to exist, and when things get super hectic, i just need that clarity, and even meditating, i dont even do it that long every day. But if im in a bind, i will just take five minutes out of the day to do it, and just bring everything down for a second, really allows me to kind of reand to face these every day challenges with more clarity. Before i have to let you go, i just wanted to come full circle who to shortcomings. What do you want the viewers were gonna watch that movie time and time again, what do you want them to take away from watching your directorial debut . I want them to be entertained, and to laugh and to also feel very moved and ideally, i would like them to look within a little bit, and ultimately this is a movie about a character who is facing whether or not he should change and grow and become a slightly better person. And i would love if this movie inspired people to consider the same thing for themselves. And then if they love the movie, i would love for them to tell their friends and have their friends see the movie, and hopefully we get as many people to see it as possible. And my thanks to randall park. He is amazing. His new movie, shortcomings, is in theaters now. So go and watch it. And my thanks to all of, you as always, for joining me this morning.
