Southern senators in the sixties who defended states rights. This vote, im ashamed to say, is further evidence that Voter Suppression has become part of the official platform of the republican party. In an unusual move, Vice President harris presided over the senate during tonights vote afterward chief vowed democrats will continue pushing for federal Voting Rights legislation. When were talking about the right to vote, it is not a republican concern or a democratic concern it isnt an american concern. This is about the american peoples right to vote. Unfettered. It is about their access to the right to vote in a meaningful way, because nobody is debating i dont believe, whether all americans have the right to vote. The bottom line is that the president and i are very clear to support as one, to support the john lewis Voting Rights act and the fight is not over. Since january of this year, just since january at least 14 states have a net did 22 new laws that restrict access to voting. And right now, there are these 61 bills with restrictive provisions. Moving through 18 other state legislatures. The Senate Republicans maintain as was evident in tonights vote that there is no reason for the federal government to step in here. There is no effort in any state in america this suppress votes based upon suppression of minority participation. What this is really about is an effort to the federal government to take over the way we conducts elections in this country. It is a solution in search of a problem. Regardless of what may be happening in some state, theres no rationale or federal intervention. The democrats only real hope of passing any kind of elections overhauled now seems to hang on a long shot bid to eliminate the filibuster. Tonight, the president issued a statement that read in part, quote, unfortunately a democratic stand to protect our democracy met a solid republican wall of opposition. It was the suppression of a bill to and Voter Suppression another attack on Voting Rights that is sadly not unprecedented. Biden added hell have more to say next week about election reform. While there was no sign of bipartisan, ship of course in tonights vote thats the problem. The Biden Administration is still hoping for more luck with their infrastructure bill. White house started a meeting with senators from both sides of the aisle who are working on their own version of a bill. Tomorrow, schumer and pelosi sit down with Administration Officials to talk about it further. Also tomorrow, biden lays out his plan to try to stop a nationwide wave of violent crimes. Today, the Justice Department said it is creating a new strike for us to target Gun Trafficking in five cities. Also today, the white house acknowledged it wont meet the president s original goal of getting 70 of us vaccinated by independence day. Tonight, doctor fauci said the focus is still on reaching as many people as possible. Were almost at the 70 vaccination with one dose of adults. We reached the 4th of july. If we dont get it by then, were gonna get it within a week or so but we dont want to stop there. Thats an aspirational goal. The goal line is crushing the virus with as many vaccinations as he possibly can. There is also a Major Political story developing tonight. A local race with national implications. Big suspense tonight in the big apple today with primary day in new york city. The citys first ever ranked choice election. Apparently because there was something too easy about voting for only that one candidate. If history is an indicator, the democrat who wins tonights primary will go on to be mayor and the heavily democratic city. Polls closed a few hours ago. Weve got Steve Kornacki standing by the big board to explain why there could be a delay in announcing a winner which is not helping the suspense in new york and already tonight, one big name has conceded. Then theres a matter of one former new york city president in other new york news with national implications. There is this. And d. C. News confirming the manhattan da is indeed investigating trumps former bodyguard matthew calamari, who is now an executive at the trump organization. Nbc news confirming calamari and his son have indeed hired outside counsel to represent them. With that, lets bring in our lead off kissed on this tuesday night Jonathan Lynn your White House Reporter for the associated press. Since the ox nate, former federal prosecutor in the Civil Rights Division of the Justice Department and sam stein, a veteran journalist who is now white house editor over at politico. Sam, indeed id like to begin with you. And i would like to play this for you. Well discuss on the other side this is republican senator mike lee of utah tonight. With this bill was written and held by the devil himself. This bill wouldnt make it easier to vote. It would make it easier to vote illegally. This is the corrupt politicians acts. If theres any chance this becomes law, it would be devastating for the country. This would be bad for everyone other than Democratic Political incumbents. So sam, how is bipartisanship going and if that was meant for outrage for the Democratic Party i think the senator has to work on his communication skills. First and foremost, i dont think the devil wrote the bill. I think thats hyperbole. That was written by a number of democratic lawmakers. It was amended, by joe manchin to include at least one very republican oriented idea which was in version of voter identification. Mentions provision would say youd have to bring Something Like the utility bill in order to vote. So i think its fair to say the democrats did try to move a little bit in the republican direction in order to win the votes but really it was never a chance that they would. I dont want to call it a Messaging Exercise that sort of diminishes it, this was an Exercise Showing where the cards were essentially. This was democrats saying look, we have in our caucus and we want to move this bill. But we noticed with going on in the states, state house around the country. Lets see what republicans have to say in response and what the republican said in response was not just what mike had to say in fox news tonight but a Resoundingly Note to considering this debate. Big question now brian is Where Do We Go From Here . What other cards does biden have to play . What other maneuvers do they have . Our reporters talk to us about this. They can see that theres not much they can do. Theyre looking for different avenues, whether its consulting with and House Democrats or meeting Corporate America to essentially what they did in georgia which is apply pressure to unlock makers in the states to not go down this path. Neither of those options are particularly fruitful so where this is kind of stuck. Jonathan, just how see the ball pick it up and run with. Where do we go from here . Well brian, i keep it as a personal policy not to agree with sam stein burn often but he is largely right about all of this. The administration does feel like their hands are relatively tied. We should expect more Public Pressure from the white house. They signaled to us earlier today soon after the spills defeated in the senate that would be hearing more from the president on this and his statement back that up that we should expect him to have a bunch of comments and perhaps in events and put together on this next week. We did hear from the Vice President sort of speaking powerfully about the need to protect the right to vote. Even her remarks earlier today after she presided in the senate, but they are short of with their only move here indeed would be to embark in some four of the Filibuster Reform but there arent too Many Democrats were willing to do that or at least not enough. Joe manchin of course is the leading Washington Post and up at the other day saying its not something she supported. And we also know that theres some other democrats who privately agree with him theyre happy to let them be the public face of this opposition and so short of that, this is going to be potentially a real disappointment for democrats and for biden himself who has said repeatedly this is a Lifelong Mission to suspend access to the franchise that he would do anything it would require to defend this to expand the Voting Rights and this is against democracy and its larger picture to prove that democracy is still working against autocracies globally. Its a harder sell if you cant say that democracies are protected right to vote at home. So this legislative agenda that is full right now, but this is something that though a huge priority for democrats may not be something they can actually enact anytime soon without some sort of leaping change. Cynthia my friend over to, you i dont say it often but we need a lawyer. What is your level of fear for our country and free and Fair Election if we dont have a federal remedy . Something new where Voter Suppression is concerned. Well im pretty scared about it and i live in florida where just about anything goes these days with our governor. So i am hoping very much that will figure out a way to get some of these bills passed and a particularly anything having to do with protection protecting this minority because it looks like the republicans are doing almost anything to make it impossible to people to vote if they dont have just the right idea or if they move or if they do anything, so i am hoping that we can come to some agreement with manchin and sinema and it seems very unlikely to me. Okay sampson, and you are the recipient of tonights video daily double. I got another one for you. This is senator amy klobuchar, democrat of minnesota tonight. We will discuss on the other side. Whats next . Were going to georgia. When the people of georgia saw what was happening back in early january when they saw the big lie being perpetrated on them, when they saw their elections being undermined by the republican party, they turned out and they voted. They didnt just vote in one democratic senator date voted into so we are not ending this fight. And one of the ways we do that is getting out of this capitol dome and heading out to the state. Some, im just the guy asking questions here but why take a victory lap of excitement over a field trip to georgia already represented in the senate by two democrats . Its an uncontested yes, yes vote to any Voter Measures in the senate. Why not, and im just putting this out here, go to a state with one or more republican senators . Its a good question. I mean, the logic here is that senator warnock is out again this coming cycle and he was critical obviously for democrats but you know georgia is the sphere for Voting Rights legislature right now and there is something to brian where the intense focus on these Suppression Laws actually has a sort of Boomerang Effect and that it inspires democrats to defy the legislation so i dont like shes wrong here but the real elections that the democrats need to worry about are not the federal elections. What were seeing now is the residual impacts of democrats just getting bludgeoned and losing state house after state house to the point where they can have the impact on these Voting Rights laws and states. Not only that, but there gonna be redistricting which the Democratic Party tends to be way too focused for their own good on the national highprofile elections and they forget that the Lower ChamberSteak House Elections are the ones who determine how these laws progress. So if theyre going to georgia, they should look at house seats, distaste house seats and the senate too. He has, its been a real colossal drop all over the past couple of cycles. So jonathan in the mirror, again im just a guy asking questions. A whole bunch of democrats out there are angry. To the aforementioned national democrats, they would like to see a level of anger from them. Check schumer gets angry in the course of a 3000 words statement and the well of the senate. Do you and the beat you cover, when are democrats going to see their president get angry over the kind of thing that happened today more than eight released statement on paper . Brian, you hit on something there that white house secretary representative jen psaki was asked about today and that was before the for the people act went down but it was Writing On The Wall and basically she was questioned. Why hasnt the president done more here . And if this is indeed as you put it a lifelong passion why hasnt he used it a little bit more . And she repotted that saying you know, he puts on statements and the question was pointed again where was he today . Why wasnt this more of a priority as this became his base its fate and the senate and, she didnt really have a good answer for that. And i think that the white house now is trying to suggest that course will be corrected. But look, this is a white house and president a particular who has, or knows how to count votes. And he has decades of years in the senate, and there just doesnt seem to be a path for this. The compromise with senator manchin, he doesnt have much as stressed in the recent days, would you put out last, week it was immediately shut down by republicans, theres no bipartisan buyin on this. Republicans have suggested that this would basically end democracy as we know it, which of course, is a gross overstatement, but that is how theyre selling it to themselves, to their caucus, but also to their voters, theyre not gonna give it an inch, it seems, even our compromise bill, so, yes this would seem that it is righteous anger from the democrats, that is a little bit from the Vice President today. We havent yet heard from the president. And maybe that will change. But that does necessarily mean that legislation is gonna change. And i think the fact that a white house that has been so careful and see quickly gets legislation, the Voting Rights really wasnt at the top of their list, it was covertly first It Restructure now, now its hanging in the balance, were gonna hear more from that on crime, and guns tomorrow. Certainly, still theres other things to tackle as well. Right now, there doesnt seem to be a lot of hope, and will be interesting to see if this president could salmon that fury to baby bird of people are gonna gays. But i wouldnt bet on it. Cynthia, you get the last word tonight. And while it is true that trump and trumpism has infused our entire conversation as we start off the broadcast tonight. Doesnt it always come down to calamari . Lets go local to new york and in manhattan, da investigation. What does it say to you as a veteran former fed that mr. Calamari, formerly hired russell, now in the executive ranks, is under such scrutiny, enough scrutiny that some apparently are lowering up . Well, hes the new focus of the investigation. I will say that he does not strike me as the central portion of the investigation. If he were, it would be a sign that the investigation was in trouble. I mean, i have the unfortunate experience of watching someone on the importance today, and so mr. Calamari. Lets say that hes probably that branch of the organization is the central focus of the investigation. And if they cant flip him, they are going to have to indict him. If they want to get some information, they will have to call his bluff. And apparently now, he is saying, i am not going to flip. And theyre going to have to do something. Reportedly, they will do something this summer and will see if they really do. The other person to really watch as the woman from deutsche bank. The person who handled many of the trump finances. That is somebody to watch, and i do not think that calamari is the central focus for the deal and all of this situation. We are much obliged to our good three on this tuesday night, to sam stein, Jonathan Lynn here, and Cynthia Ochsner down in florida where apparently hold reruns of The Apprentice run henry run 24 7. Or thanks, gangly appreciate you starting us off tonight. Coming up for us, when is a race for mayor for National News . The answer, when there are more people in the city than there are people in 38 different states. Steve kornacki standing by for us at the big board to explain the returns tonight in the new york city mayor race. Coming up, democrats won a battle with joe manchin, right before they lost the war. For now, at least. We will talk strategy with two veteran political watchers, and later, a mask free fourth of july for much of our country, but a race against time to get enough americans vaccinated by fall. And i am not going to be the next mayor of new york city based upon the numbers that are coming in tonight. John yang dropping out of the race for mayor in new york, Election Night in the biggest city in our country. We are going to check in on the mayors race, and before we go to Steve Kornacki at the big board. Just two points to make, first, today is election the city so blue that the winner almost all automatically goes on to be mayor. About the job itself, the mayor of new york city has more constituents than 76 of our u. S. Senators. Put another way, the population of the city is higher than 38 of our 50 states. As youre about to hear, that was the easy part. New york does nothing simply, tonights election, no different. Lets go to steve at the big board. Steve a good look. Over, brian. Lets take it from what we know. These are the votes that have been counted tonight. Says First Jewelry here because this is a way ring voting is working thats the first time theyre doing an intercity, thats the way, works in the primary here, you can check in on your first choice, youre shot, your third choice, your fourth, all the way through to five. What the city said it would release tonight is the first choice all of the inperson votes, meaning folks who went and voted today, and folks who voted early. So, this is most, probably just all of the votes, the first choice preference there. So, there still a chunk of mail in balance that are going to be not open for another week. Seoul, when you factor those in, these numbers and cannot, and perhaps will change a bit, but i want to emphasize that some things are becoming clear here. You saw andrew yang conceding defeat tonight. Yang and everybody south of them, theyre not first. Choice clearly, automatically, theyre not going to win this. The or clear by the Voter Preference if you voted for yang, who we are second shrines was on that matter is going to vote. But yang wont win, string or wont win. The winner will be one of these three candidates. Eric adams, maya wylie, catherine garcia. And the league right now that adams has over both wiley and garcia is potentially significant as rank Choice Voting has been done. It is not that widespread right now but it has been around a number of places for a while and perhaps if you look at every ranked choice election that has taken place in this country and in the history of ranked Choice Voting, and the biggest margin, is somebody whos gonna finish in the first choice round outside of first place the biggest gap has been overcome to win one of these things as been 9. 3 points. From the first choice. Wiley right now, if you played out to the Decimal Point is 9. 2 points behind eric adams. Now, again, there are mailin ballots that will be counted. Maybe this thing will get tighter when those are counted. Theres a few votes to put in tonight, but i think it is clear that eric adams is going to lead on the first choice. First choice voice are all tabulated, and then in about a week or two, going through multiple rounds of voting, the history of ranchers voting its been the candidate who finishes first, in the first choice. Theyre candid to win, not automatically, but when your league is as big as adams is. Its very high probability of winning, the question is, mail votes, remaining votes, can wily or garcia make this thing a bit closer, perhaps . And when they do those retaliations, through the complicated rank choice system, could they somehow takeover it would take a lot from them to pull it. Out not impossible, but it would take a lot. Brian. My friend, thank you for joining us, and correcting me. A friend of mine for many years correspondent for many years at our network, john yang. I am used to seeing his name. I have made that mistake with andrew yang, now former candidate, many times. We are flattered and lucky to have you on the broadcast, and more importantly at the big board tonight. Because it is a lot, and it is confusing. Steve kornacki, thank you so much. With me now, two more friends of this broadcast, Veteran Washington journalist and Associate Editor and columnist for real clear politics. And Michael Steele, former chairman of the Republican National committee, former lieutenant of the great state of maryland, also happens to be the host of Michael Steele podcast. Michael, id like to begin with you. To speak on behalf of all the viewers like me, who found that last segment just too hard mathematically. Was it too simple to vote for one candidate . And was there a check off on the form, of a four out of the check in, the fish is okay . That is essentially it, yeah. [laughs] there are people who like fish and chicken. And i think it is good and appropriate that our Voting System seemingly, is trying to accommodate that, now. To give People Better options in Bidder Choices for people who disengage and step back from politics, because, they support someone who everyone else that conventional wisdom says, there are not part of the traditional lot of candidates. Well, with rank choice and other forms of ballot that are taking shape in various states, right now, they are opening up that possibility. And what it means, particularly, on the heels of what happened in the senate today with the Voting Rights measure. Its, its its getting voters the incentive to participate. And, you know, to say, look, ok. Your first choice might not be everybody else is first choice, but it could be their second choice. And that is the point that steve was just drafting up for us from maya and catherine. Okay, yeah, youre sitting at this percentage right now, but theres still a lot more votes to come in, and voters have the option to maybe perhaps pick you as their second choice. Which changes the dynamic of the voting process, and thats a good thing for them. A. B. , first of all im stunned by michaels magnanimity on this topic, but i will move on. And im not saying, but just saying, if you had to write a column tonight on deadline, the column could be, could it not . While there is a discussion in washington and out in the states on restricting of the vote, in new york, where they have been open for days and they have a robust mailin effort and open late at night for hours on the actual primary day, they have such a luxury of elections that they have filled and i hope man you with your choice of candidate. I am a big fan and that. I dont think its a complicated the people want to go. And pick the chicken, or the fish, and rank the other menu choices below. It is only five. And then leave it to the computers to do the tabulation. Im the biggest fan of the final five voting which gets rid of the primary, partisan primary, and gives you an open primary that picks out choices in those people, those five campaigns for the general election. They campaigned nicely because they know that they dont want to many people to be the second choice there. Dole, they campaigned on a platform. And results for voters. So, their campaign against each other. And if i was writing a column tonight, id also be tempted, ryan, to focus on the fact that if maya wylie does not prevail, and aocs endorsement does not get over the edge, and why see is not enough of a stronghold that a thought it was, and thats a big warning to progressives. So, i think its gonna be an interesting part of the divide as we see progressives get louder with the Biden Administration wanting to come in. And have it all trying to pull together before the midterms where theyre gonna take a beating. Yeah, indeed if further the winner tonight, doesnt prevail, it is a former republican, former Police Officer in new york city, who ran on a tough on crime platform in the middle of a post pandemic crime weave that no one can deny but im getting ahead of myself, well have our friends in his day with us throughout the break. Were gonna talk about the democrats, were gonna talk about what happened in the senate today, when we come back. Back this is not dead. This is not dead. Today, were ringing the bell on the fight, and were gonna come back to round two, around. Three the fight for Voting Rights, this is the starting run. Now the finish line. So, if you want to hear how its not dead, you are not alone tonight back with us, our a. B. Starter and Michael Steele, a. B. , if you come on one night a week, i hope youll be there on the other for so you get your residual checks for all five nights, i have been quoting you for so long, you called what happened to 80 a mile away, the democrats have no game over 50. So, what do you do . And do you trash the bill, put it in the trash, rewrite, start over and present the full senate with something fresh . I do think that joe biden is well aware of these negotiations with joe manchin. Hes had talked to schumer most every day. Meeting at least once a week in a small leadership huddle, and none of this is a secret. So, there are two tracks theyre taken. Hes either gonna come up with a new bill, or negotiate with republicans, which he did in on this quick compromise fully. And that is something that he could get to republicans on, or he will back down on the Filibuster Reform, not the elimination of the legislative filibuster. So those are other two paths that Majority Leaders and the president are aware that they have to follow. We will find out which one joe manchins gonna take them down with. He might want to watch republicans on the record first, but i think that those are the two options that they got left. Michael steele, he was our mutual friend, cornwall us on the topic of the filibuster on our broadcast today. The idea that there is political peril and doing away with it i think is faulty, the other thing that i hear more on, and i hear hold off, is that there is political peril in place. I think theres real political peril in all of this failure to deliver in two years. So, i think that theyre choosing between bad and worse and i think that today, the worst is leaving the filibuster in place. Michael steele . How is she wrong . And do you agree . I mean, i think. You know. To abcs point, thats more and more the reality that the democrats are confronting right now. Is how did they get over this austin hurdle known as the republican minority in the senate . Senate republicans are very clear their intent to do that. And thats to view the democrats snugly. There is no ascent regarding joe manchin, no matter what he, says no matter whats put in front of, them theres no incentive for republicans to get joe biden and his administration away on anything. This sooner democrats realize and that truth, the sooner they will be able to come up with a strategy to overcome it. Right now, there is a spinning wheels. And i think that that is really the business basis of the whole point. Michael, ive got about 20 seconds left, what about a democratic tour to at least blue dots in red states . Go right at them. Media mark, its tv, newspapers, tv ads, and appeal to people in red states, represented by red senators. Five months too late, but okay. Do it. Thats. Thats you sound a lot like my friend a. B. Stoddard. [laughs] a. B. Is right the political juggernaut instincts, work it yeah. Thank you both, what a day. We just witnessed, but we want to have you both. On a beast authored, Michael Steele, my guest tonight with our guest. Our new warning from doctor fauci on this Delta Variant. As virus rates increase in some areas of our country sadly. Its not the gifts. Its really the smiles that count. Smile, crest has you covered. The vaccines we have to the 1 toothpaste brand in america. Protect well against the Delta Variant. So, if ever there was a reason to get vaccinated, it is right now. Because we are seeing this Delta Variant double every two weeks. Were up to 20. 6 of the isolates now, the delta variance. Cdcs Shifts Numbers show the Vaccination Rates lagging in several states. Today, the first lady was in one of those states, in mississippi. Where she tried to comfort a Nurse Patient Kid who did not like a needles. She covered his eyes while he got his vaccination at jackson state university. In missouri, where the overall population is received even the first shot. New covid cases are the highest recorded in any state. We will come back dr. Red leonard, the founding director of the National Center for Disaster Preparedness in columbia, who advises us on public health. Hes also columnist with the daily beast. After the pandemic, doc, we have been through with doctor fauci using the phrase about anything that is, you know, doubling every two weeks. It really focuses the mind, and i assume that you concur with his assessment of this Delta Variant. The potential danger it poses to us even though we think that were through it. Yeah. This is why we have been proceeding with cautious optimism. Yes we made a lot of progress as you well know but i think that we will have to be careful not to over promise that were done with this because were not and in the wings is waiting this Delta Variant and there will be more variants later. I dont want to be doctor doom here, but i do feel like its important to not get ahead of ourselves. When we keep pushing people to get vaccinated like doctor fauci is said, numerous times the vaccine it will help prevent even the delta variance. But for those people which are many many people throughout the southeast in particular, there is a problem. Because people are not getting vaccinated at the rate that they should be. And they are in danger, brian. There is no to ways about it. We are going to fall short of that July 4th Benchmark of 70 of the souls in our country having been vaccinated. Does the sledding get really tough after july 4th . ,. . The problem is the patchwork that, picture of it in the united states. Were doing great in new york, in many other places in the middle of the country. But in the Southern Parts of the country, in missouri, in alabama, mississippi, arkansas, we have very low rates of accident. To where we were and i just hesitate, theyre actually resistant. The antivaxxers who are not going to budge. And you are potentially going to have a problem in those areas with the Vaccination Rates are so low, in the vaccination is going really quite slowly. And i think they were all kind of concern about that. What should the messaging be since by training and trade you are a pediatrician first and foremost. What should the messaging be too young people, some of the holdouts in our country . So, there is this sense of, you know, immortality among a lot of people. And i think, probably in i experienced a little bit of that at those ages as well. The problem is that theres been nothing like this before for the 20 year olds, and 30 year olds. And they really have to pay attention, because a lot of people are getting sick. Even children are getting sick. And i think that theres been of a lightness by the approach of young people getting vaccinated i think we need them to step up as an example to other americans. But we need 20 year olds and 30 year olds to say, i need the vaccine, and need it now. And i think if we can get a break loose there, we can make some big progress. But it is going to take some messaging. By the way, by people who are keepers of those who are a resident or resistance to that. Its not gonna be the older sect that is going to be that influential i think theyve been looking to do that, peers who can speak the language and folks who are still resistance arrests resistance of getting a vaccine. I can indeed confirm fleeting feelings of immortality so i blew my knee in high school. Football dr. Irwin redlener, a friend of this broadcast has been our guest about our pandemic so far. Coming up, staying on topic, how do you welcome the world to the Olympic Games when the virus is still rampant in your country . Well, we are all about to find out. Indeed from the comfort of our homes. Ur homes. No, hes not in his room. Dad, why didnt you answer your phone . Your mother loved this park. She did. Wondering what actually goes into your multivitamin . At new chapter, its innovation, organic ingredients, and fermentation. Fermentation . Yes. Formulated to help you body really truly absorb the natural goodness. Tomorrow marks exactly one new chapter. Wellness, well done. Month until the Opening Ceremony of the Summer Olympics in tokyo. And even though the city reported another 430 new covid cases today alone, even though a tiny fraction of its citizens have been vaccinated, fans will be allowed to attend though, in limited numbers. Because due to that pandemic, state after state, jurisdiction after jurisdiction and i should note that this is both democratic and republican. There were some fights over this but across the board, more or less on the hole in the
